COMMUNITY / PROPERTY Father Christmas is Coming To Alresford!
Jackie's County Corner Merry Christmas! Thank you for your comments about recycling following November’s County Corner. I’ll return to Recycling in the New Year. 2021 hasn’t been easy, and many of us haven’t been ‘boosted’ yet to protect ourselves from Covid 19 because of our beliefs, or our age or the venue for the vaccination. I urge you to take up the offer of the booster as soon as you can. If you need help to reach the vaccination centre and don’t know how you are going to get there, please let me know. I can signpost you to organisations that can help. Hopefully, though you have enjoyed some good times in 2021. Quizzes were one way we have kept in touch with friends, both in our local Pub and on zoom. A recent Quiz round was COP-In or COPOut? What CoP26 promises would you have made? You can see more questions at www.carbonbrief.org/the-carbonbrief-quiz-2020 It set me thinking about my Carbon Plan towards ‘net-zero by 2030’. Have you got a Personal Carbon Plan? Does it involve using less electricity, generating more energy, driving less, and driving more slowly, walking more, no more plane journeys, substituting the car for a bus ride, insulating your home, eating less? I’d be interested to hear how you are making changes to your lifestyle to tackle Climate Change: you can see more ideas on www. newleafalresford.org or www.winacc.org.uk I’ll be sharing thoughts for PCP’s in a future County Corner. I recently joined in a call on ‘Community Preparedness’, primarily in case of flooding and the results of other terrible weather, with HCC and the Environment Agency. To register for Floodline warnings (though not Stormwater notifications) go to www.gov.uk/check-flooding or call 0345 988 1188. A really good idea is to create a ‘grab bag’: a simple plastic wallet containing copies of all the necessary paperwork to enable you to deal with life if your home is consumed by flooding or any other emergency. By keeping this near your front door, you will better prepared to deal with any scenario which needs you to leave your home in a hurry. It will be reassuring to know that you have the paperwork at hand in a crisis! If you need me urgently over the Christmas period, please call 01962 791054 (with ansaphone). I look forward to talking with you again in the New Year. Jackie Porter, Jackie.porter@hants.gov.uk, text 07973 696 085

Wednesday, December 8th from 6.15pm in Broad Street. 2020 was quite a challenge for the big fella. What with Rudolph self-isolating and social distancing measures he had to ask the Alresford Pigs to devise a cunning plan to get around all the children in town resulting in his ‘Grand Tour Of Alresford’. Thankfully this year we’re back to normal and we’ll be giving him a warm welcome as he arrives in some strange or magical way. Over the years he’s achieved this in increasingly wonderful ways but how will he do it in 2021? It’s the best-kept secret of the year so to find out, make sure you’re there! Once he’s arrived, Santa heads for his grotto to meet ALL the children and give every single one of them a FREE Christmas Present. WOW! Here’s what’s happening. Don’t be late! 6.15pm Lead up to the Arrival of Father Christmas with community carol singing 7.00pm Father Christmas will arrive in the town 7.15pm - 8.30pm Children visit Santa in his grotto where presents will be handed out 6pm - 9pm Late night shopping The Arrival Of Father Christmas is organized by the Alresford Pigs Association and the Alresford Christmas Tree Committee The Alresford Pigs Association is a registered charity (charity no. 1163001). COMMUN ITY / PROPERTY Your local Age UK charity shop team need your support.
• £5 could pay for a cheerful call to someone who is desperately lonely from one of our amazing befrienders or £5 could pay for vital help and information from our advice line, supporting a lonely older person to make the most of later life. •
I am writing to you on behalf of the Age UK shop at Alresford (21A Broad street Alresford SO24 9AR). We find it increasingly difficult to get good quality stock donations to sell in our shop and are hoping we can encourage people to bring in their donation and help support us at Age UK. We are looking for quality unwanted items such as clothing; shoes; bags and bric a brac. We raise at least £20 from each donated bag of stock we receive. This could help us further by gift aiding their donation. If you would be interested in helping promote donating to your local Age UK shop With the money raised for Age UK, we are able to provide the following:
£10 could pay for a volunteer to pop over for a cuppa or take someone who is alone out for a drink or £10 could pay for an older person to get help with simple but essential jobs around the home, from a friendly volunteer.
• £20 could pay for an older person to spend a day at their local Age UK centre and enjoy a hot lunch, activities and the chance to meet new friends or £20 could pay for a month of weekly friendship calls to one of the million desperately lonely people in the UK.
• £50 could pay for 2 older people to enjoy return transport and a healthy meal at a local Age UK lunch club and socialise with others. As you can see from the above, donations help us find practical solutions to help older people enjoy later life. Age UK relies heavily on the support and goodwill of the community and if this is something you feel you could support us with that would be much appreciated.
Yours sincerely, Shop Manager Age UK Alresford.
Deck the halls… A huge thank you for all your custom and support this year. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas! From, Philip & Joanna

COMMUNITY Winchester Councillors Report
residents were in favour of the concept 2 years after the introduction. The Transport Act 2000 contains provisions which give local highway authorities the power to designate certain roads, for which they are responsible as Quiet Lanes, and has given the term ‘Quiet Lane’ legal status. These provisions were an amendment to the Transport Bill and came as a result of lobbying from CPRE, the Children’s Play Council, Transport 2000 and the Local Government Association. So far Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Cheshire, Gloucestershire and Norfolk have picked up on the idea. A recent survey in Alresford has shown widespread support for 20 mph limits on residential roads, but would Quiet Lanes suit villages better?

Margot Power Tel: 01962 734167
Work on the long-awaited car park on the Dean continues but there are challenges; the owners quite understandably wish to maximise the return on ownership, whereas we want to maximise the car spaces available without affecting residents. The addition of another 300+ traffic movements at the Pound Hill /West Street will make the junction more of a problem. The roundabout at Sun Hill is likely to cause a reduction of movement down Jacklyns Lane, which will make it hard to predict what form of traffic controls be successful. Another concern is the lack of local premises for those businesses that would need to move out of Alresford due to lack of alternative premises – until employment space at Sun Lane becomes available. Traffic Speed - Some 20 years ago the causeway between New and Old Alresford was closed to vehicles, due to a deep crack in the roadway. (It turned out to be but a deep crack in the tarmac and not the earthworks giving way). The closing of the road was a revelation, over two weeks people were able to cycle or walk and enjoy the view of the lake along a length of road which is usually a race track, though nominally a 30 limit. What if this experience could be repeated more widely? What if people did not always have to defer to the motor vehicle? Excessive speed on country roads and through the villages and towns are a perpetual menace. Hampshire CC (HCC) have been very reluctant to introduce more 20mph limits or to expand the existing ones. HCC policy on this matter was stated in a reply to the Pennington and Lymington Lanes Society, whose request for Quiet Lanes was turned down, “it is to support traffic management measures where evidence clearly indicates that it will offer direct benefits in terms of road casualty reduction.” So, if nobody dies, nothing happens. The neighbouring county of Dorset is more receptive to this idea. A recent report on this topic by Dorset CC includes - The Department of Transport encourages highway authorities to introduce 20mph limits in urban areas and village streets where “there are or – could be – significant numbers of journeys on foot and where pedal cycle movements are an important consideration, and this outweighs the disadvantage of longer journey times for motorised traffic.” Another possible approach is the introduction of ‘Quiet Roads’, an idea promoted by the CPRE. Quiet Lanes are minor rural roads, typically C or unclassified routes, which have been designated by local highway authorities to pay special attention to the needs of walkers, cyclists, horse riders and other vulnerable road users, and to offer protection from speeding traffic. Some counties, Kent and Norfolk have had pilot projects running for decades. In Kent 86% of

Beware of scams Scams are criminal tricks, designed to deceive people, to gain access to their money, possessions or personal details. Scammers are taking advantage of people’s fear – particularly during Covid – so don’t be caught out! Tips on spotting scams: 1. Being rushed in to making a decision – any good tradesperson / organisation will give you time to think about something and will not expect a decision straight away 2. Too good to be true – if it is an unbelievably good deal, it could be a scam 3. Asking for cash upfront – never give bank details or money up front, genuine companies may ask for a deposit once a contract has been signed, but will not ask for full payment Scams to be aware of: • Tradesperson scams – doorstep cold caller, offering to clean your driveway, patio or paths; make repairs to your home; and/or offering to tidy your garden • Telephone scams – offering refunds you are not expecting or threatening legal action – such as Council Tax and HM Revenue & Customs • Financial scams – telephone call or doorstep cold caller, pretending to be your bank, mortgage company or insurance provider asking for bank details or security passwords • Courier fraud – telephone call or doorstep cold caller, claiming to be the Police or other law enforcement agency, persuading you to withdraw money from your bank • Post / parcel scams – a text message or email, claiming to be from the Royal Mail or a parcel company, asking you to pay for redelivery of a missed / failed delivery • Covid-19 doorstep scam – doorstep cold caller, looking to gain access to your property, claiming to be carrying out Covid testing on behalf of the NHS or your GP You can contact Denise, Alresford’s Community Information Volunteer, on 07969 376023 or enquiries@ageconcernhampshire. org.uk

“What in the world is happening?”
FAMILY FUN
There are many warnings in The Bible about the ‘LAST TIMES’. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself talked about various happenings, being the ‘beginning of sorrows’. We are also told, that this world will not last forever, but we do: we have an eternity to face in one of two places, and whilst one is too wonderful to describe, the other is too awful to contemplate. We need to be right with God, as the Apostle Paul said to the Philippian jailor, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved’’ Acts 16:31. Elsewhere, “whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved’’ (Bible references: Matt 24; 1 Timothy 4; 2 Timothy 3; Hebrews 12:25-27. All available at Bible Gateway)

GARDEN / COMMUNITY Hampshire Hedges We have all been reminded recently of our need to do our bit for the planet. In the recent Cop26 debate it was good to see that planting trees was one of the solutions put forward by scientists to save the world. Many people may think that planting a tree in the garden is not possible, and they may be right. Most trees would quickly dominate their space and would reduce the area for floral or vegetable planting and for children’s play. Typically, many gardens have timber fences that will become, or are, structurally unsound due to rotting from lack of upkeep. What an opportunity to do your bit for the planet! Instead of planting a tree or replacing a rotting fence, why not plant an instant hedge? This will provide just as much or even more green growth to absorb those carbon emissions as a tree. So you can do your bit for the planet. Consider also the benefits a natural hedge provides like: • Nesting opportunities for small birds • Natural corridors for small mammals
Best winter walks in Hampshire There’s no better feeling than coming back into the warm after a cold, crisp winter walk. Whether you’re searching for a preChristmas walk to de-stress in the lead-up to the big day or looking to burn off a few calories between Christmas and New Year, Hampshire is blessed with plenty of walking routes to give you much needed time in nature, exploring the best the season can offer. East Meon The picturesque village of East Meon, once owned by the Bishops of Winchester, is home to many historic buildings including the Old Court House. The Ye Olde George Inn and the Izaak Walton Public House offer delicious local food and real ales, along with a roaring fire to warm you up after a lovely stroll through the beautiful Meon valley. Our walking guide suggests two circular walks, both starting at the imposing Norman church of All Saints with its magnificent spire. One walk of 4 miles should take approximately two hours and the second, a longer walk of 8 miles, which can be completed in around four hours. Queen Elizabeth Country Park Just three miles south of Petersfield, Queen Elizabeth Country Park offers over 2,000 acres of open woodland and downland. Open every day other than Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Queen Elizabeth Country Park is your starting off point for exploring Butser Hill, one of the highest points in the National Park.

• Habitat for caterpillars, ladybirds, bees and butterflies • If maintained correctly a hedge will last a lifetime. At Hampshire hedges, we grow instant hedges in Airpots which enable them to be planted at any time of the year. The airpot system helps the hedge plant to develop a thick fibrous root structure, so that when it is planted no extra support is required and with just the right irrigation routine, in the first couple of years, success is guaranteed. Hampshire Hedges have a range of hedges that provide both deciduous and evergreen options for most situations. These hedges are offered at 1.2 m (4 ft), 1.5 m (5ft) and 1.8 m (6 ft) high. As an environmentally conscious company, we now grow all our hedging in (reduced peat) compost in line with government guidelines. The product we use has produced very good root systems and excellent growth extensions. In addition, prior to delivery, we remove the plastic airpots which are then re-used, reducing plastic waste. The hedge roots are then wrapped in jute for transport which can be left on the roots and planted directly into your prepared trench. New roots will soon grow through the jute membrane which biodegrades over a couple of years. The use of jute was a simple way of moving away from shrink wrap plastic. At Hampshire Hedges we understand the connection between the health of the planet and the impact of non-disposable packaging. Every day we work to advance our business toward Zero waste systems and help our customers be better stewards for the environment.
With 360 degree views, Butser Hill is one of the best places to admire the Dark Night Skies of the South Downs. The on-site Beechwood Kitchen serves up hot drinks and food using locallysourced ingredients. Alice Holt Forest The Forestry England-managed Alice Holt Forest is a must see for lovers of trees and woodland. Come the winter, the trees have completed their transition with the forest floor turning into a patchwork of orange, ochre and gold. With five trails of differing lengths and distances, there’s plenty for families along with those looking for something a little more challenging to while away those wintry days.If looking to head to a pub to warm up after, The Jolly Farmer and The Bluebell are right on the edge of Alice Holt. Both pubs are dog-friendly and serve-up tasty, seasonal food. Hampshire Hangers The 21-mile Hangers Way takes you through a valley of steep, tree-covered hills. Lose yourself in steep valley sides cloaked in hanger woodlands. The Hangers Way is a 21-mile long-distance trail between Alton railway station and Queen Elizabeth Country Park, where it eventually connects with the South Downs Way. The Way is divided into 8 different sections, ideal if you don’t fancy completing it all in one day. However, if you do want to do it all in one day, Petersfield makes for an ideal rest point and has numerous pubs, cafés and delis to allow you to fuel up before continuing the rest of your journey The South Downs National Park - www..southdowns.gov.uk

4 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Greener C
limate change is a pressing issue, and it means we’re paying more attention to our carbon footprint. The UK is currently working towards a target of net-zero emissions by 2050, and we’re all playing our part to reach this goal. In our personal lives, our biggest contributor to greenhouse gases is our homes. Household emissions contribute around 15% of the UK’s total carbon footprint. The good news, however, is that there are many things we can do to lower our homes’ greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we discuss easy and cost-effective ways to make your home greener.
Don’t leave appliances on standby
We’ll start with an oldie but a goodie. Energy Saving Trust found that between 9% and 16% of UK household energy usage is from devices plugged in on standby. It is estimated that this could be costing us around £86 a year. By switching off your appliances when you’re not using them, you’re not only making a positive impact on the environment, but you’re also saving money! This research also found that the older an appliance is, the less energy efficient it is. If you’re on a budget, replacing all your devices such as kettles, TVs, and speakers probably isn’t possible. Simply unplugging them – or, better yet, switching the plug off when they’re not in use – is an easy way to make a difference.
Consider your fuel sources
Make your home green…literally
If you’ve followed these tips, you’ll have dramatically reduced your home’s greenhouse gas emissions. Now, what about putting something good into the environment? If you have a garden, plants and flowers that positively contribute to the ecosystem work best. Flowers that provide pollen to bees, like foxgloves and lavender, are a great additional way to contribute to the environment. Bonus points if you have some holly plant hedging around for small wildlife to make a habitat in. Inside your home, we recommend choosing plants with the best oxygen-boosting benefits. Spider plants are common in the UK, and for good reason. Not only do they produce plenty of clean oxygen, but they can also help remove harmful gases including formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Aloe vera is another great choice, especially for your bedroom because it produces oxygen overnight. As well as clearing the air of benzene and harmful aldehydes, its gel can be used for anything from skincare to wound healing!
We know that some fuel sources are more environmentally friendly than others. What you might not know is that a home emits an average of 2.7 tonnes of CO2 a year solely from heating. That’s a lot of greenhouse gas. New build homes will be required to fit a non-gas boiler from 2023 as part of the gas boiler ban. While there’s currently no ban on gas boilers in existing homes, we may see this implemented in the future on the roadmap to net-zero emissions. Electric boilers are significantly more eco-friendly because they don’t burn fossil fuels in order to create heat. This is hugely beneficial to the environment. What’s more, electric boilers are extremely energy-efficient. Most will have an energy efficiency rating of 99%, which is better than any gas boiler. If your gas boiler is coming to the end of its life, now is the time to consider an environmentally friendly alternative. However, if you’re not in a position to do that right now, ensuring you have it regularly serviced by a Gas Safe boiler engineer will ensure it’s as energy efficient as possible.
The fight against climate change is one we all need to play our part in. Our homes emit a lot of greenhouse gases, but there are ways we can not only reduce these harmful emissions but also introduce cleaner oxygen. An added bonus of making your home greener is that you’ll save on a lot of unnecessary costs too – winwin!
Think about energy efficiency everywhere
to-lowering-uk-carbon-emissions-report-finds/
Your boiler isn’t the only thing in your home that you can make more energy efficient. In the same way that your heat source
16
impacts how energy efficient your home is, so does your home’s insulation. A report from Nottingham Trent University and the IET found that insulating homes in the UK is critical if we’re to meet our target of net-zero emissions. Insulation will not only save you money by trapping heat inside your home, but it will also prevent greenhouse gases from leaking out into the environment. Energy efficiency can also be applied to some of your other key household appliances. If you use your washing machine more efficiently and fill it effectively instead of running multiple small loads, you’ll use significantly less energy and water. Similarly, if your home has a dishwasher, don’t switch it on until it’s full.

COMMUNITY Alresford & District Neighbourhood Watch Association Since the 15th October the spending limit for contactless cards has been increased from £45 to £100. Whilst it will take time to update all the card payment terminals the increase has made bank card theft far more attractive to offenders. It is now easier for a thief to use a lost or stolen card to make larger purchases, especially if the card owner has not noticed that the card is missing. We can limit the risk of contactless fraud by following some simple steps: • • • • •
Do not leave bags or wallets, with bank cards, in your car Do not let anyone take your card out of sight to make a payment and always ask for and check the receipt Check bank statements regularly, if you see any unexpected payments contact your bank immediately If you think your card is lost or stolen, contact your bank straight away to cancel it; many mobile banking apps have the facility to pause or cancel a card immediately Consider purchasing a purse chain with bells that attaches your wallet to your bag or pocket
If you have been a victim of fraud, please report it to Action Fraud using their online tool, or by calling - 0800 123 0240
Safety when buying or selling online
It has become increasingly popular and easy to buy and sell items online and through social media. This can also involve meeting people you don’t know to exchange items and money. It always pays to be vigilant, as you do not know the person you are speaking to or arranging to meet. Some ways you can protect yourself as a buyer or seller online are to: • Use an online payment option such as PayPal which can protect you • Never transfer money directly into a seller’s account without viewing the item in person at a safe place • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is • For additional tips visit ‘Get Safe Online’ www.getsafeonline.org/
Stop Fraud - The Art of Saying No!
'Take Five to Stop Fraud' have recently launched a new campaign titled “The Art of Saying No”. As many of us know saying ‘no’ can feel uncomfortable, but it’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore requests especially if someone is asking for your personal or financial information. Only criminals will try to rush and panic you into giving away damaging information. If you receive or come across a scam, then please email #StopChallengeProtect and forward it to report@phishing.gov.uk and/or send a text to 7726.

The Church in the Wood 2021 review Our last review was of the Covid year as we called 2020. We described what had been done ‘in the wood’ during 19/20. Much volunteer effort was directed at woodwork, painting and restoring the harmonium. Despite everything, we were able to hold five services including one memorial, and all of these were outside. In 2021 there have been ten services, with two still to take place, The Almighty has intervened to give “good enough” weather to remain outside to respect Covid rules which latterly allowed us to venture indoors.
Other News
9th May - Hymns in the Wood with Rev Christopher, was attended by a congregation of 67. Sadly, no brass band thanks to Covid but the harmonium did us well with Pat Mathews at the keyboard and the singing was uplifting! 13th June - Outside with Sarah Gill preaching and lessons read by her father, a retired vicar whose enthusiasm for the old job, nearly eclipsed her! 26th July - Inside with Rev Christopher, with hymns for the first time since 2019! 8th August - Inside with Rev Christopher. The bell rope broke just before the service but it was repaired a couple of days later by Ian Dow a builder from San Francisco who was in the congregation. 15th August - there was a bunch of flowers on the door step with a note remembering Ryell and Alex Duffy from Gary, Gemma and Amelie. 26th September - Harvest Festival with Rev Christopher. Outside with hymns and of course Richard Beaumont on the harmonium. 5th November - a large branch broke off a beech tree blocking the track to the church. This was soon removed at Julie Butler’s request by Marc Carpenter. The trustees have finally made a reluctant decision to remove the top section of the large oak at the back of the churchyard. The church is totally dependent on the generous contributions given during services and they have made this work possible. The tree has been suffering from honey fungus and it is thought to be necessary for the removal to be done from a cherry picker as it is too dangerous to climb. 6th November - Another bunch of memorial flowers on the door step but this time without a note. Also a stone with the message, St Albans Rocks, with a photo, post, re-hide. Is it part of a game of search, a long way from home? AND NEXT on 12th December Carol Service outside, (weather permitting) followed on 17th December by a Carol service for the Alresford Scout troop Hopefully, pictures to follow Wishing you a very Happy Christmas James

PROFESSIONAL Mr Mac - Support for Apple Macs & Windows If you are thinking about buying an Apple product as a Christmas present, consider doing it now. Stocks will be affected by a worldwide shortage of components. Popular products such as the entry level iPad and the latest iPhone 13 might not be available in December. If you are considering a new iMac, you might be interested to know that John Lewis still has some of the classic 2020 intel-based machines available, the Apple iMac 21.5 All-inOne, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 21.5” Full HD, Silver is £1099. This is considerably cheaper than the new iMac series and performs very well indeed. As a bonus John Lewis offers a two year warranty compared to Apple's 12 months. Finding a high-quality microphone for your desktop computer, Apple or Windows, can be frustrating. I have tried quite a few and have finally found a very good one, it is made by a company called RØDE, the RØDE MT mini. An advantage is that the headphone output on the back of the microphone. This means you can clearly hear your own voice as well as that of the caller. The quality is quite exceptional and is available from Amazon for £72.25. This version sits on your desk, you can buy a “mic arm”, avoid the cheap ones and try instead the Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP, low profile swivel boom with hidden cable channels. At £89.99 it is not cheap but, in my opinion worth the extra. Thank you to all my customers, new and old, that have welcomed me into their homes during the last 12 months. It has been such a pleasure spending time with you all and I look forward to meeting new and existing customers in 2022. www.mistermac.co.uk

COMMUNITY / PROFESSIONAL Wcc Cllr Fiona Isaacs Report Halloween Thank You A massive thank you from my husband and me to everyone who came along to support our Halloween walkthrough. The 6th year of doing this and so lovely to see everyone again. Thank you for all the donations which this year will be going to support The Alresford Pigs. (www.alresfordpigs.org)
New House Number signs 4 set back elderly residents were concerned that ambulances and drivers could not find them due to the distance from the road. I have managed to organise a new roadside sign that will be clear from the road/vehicles. Tree Shoots - some local residents were concerned about offshoots from surrounding trees growing up through pavements and lawns. I have arranged for these to be assessed. Planning Permission refund We all know mistakes can happen, but when a resident expressed concern about planning permission for a driveway I was asked to help. As it turned out, this resident never needed to apply to Winchester City Council and was in fact incorrectly informed. I asked for the resident to be refunded once I raised it as an investigation and they confirmed that there had been a mistake and agreed to refund the monies paid. Jacklyn's Lane new bin I was happy to support some residents request for a bin on the left hand side walking from Nursery close to Elm road. The new bin next to the bus stop is dual purpose and has been popular with residents, esp those who didn’t want to cross the road.
Supporting Our Community Lighting up Alresford - It’s that time of the year again. I will be joining The Alresford Chamber of Commerce and The Alresford Pigs volunteers to put the little Christmas trees up in the main streets in Alresford. A massive thank you to all the volunteers and the people who purchased them. This year the town will be fully LED, thanks to a joint project with The Chamber of Commerce and a grant for half the costs from New Alresford Town Council. This will ensure the project continues into the future as the old bulbs are no longer available. The kind support from New Alresford Town Council has enabled the LED project to be completed. Trees go up Saturday 27th November Christmas Donkey walkabout I am thrilled to be supporting this fantastic idea. There is a plan for a Christmas Donkey walkabout on Tuesday 21st December from 1.30pm - 3pm in the Meryon Rd area (Walking plan Mitford / Meryon and Windsor loop ) The Dean Car Park update As many people may know, I have been involved in supporting this since 2017 when I spoke to Winchester City Council Cabinet about the possibility of purchasing land for a car park on the Dean. Unfortunately, recently it was fed back to me from various parties involved that discussions had come to a standstill. I raised this issue at The New Alresford Town Council. I have fed key data into the Winchester City Council (WCC) planning department that I originally presented in 2017, and also have had discussions with the developer and businesses involved. I am pleased to report that discussions are underway again and we are hopeful that we can finally get some positive movement on an issue that the town desperately needs. Working on issues raised I am pleased to report that I have managed to get positive outcomes on a number of issues raised to me by local residents.

CULTURE Ropley’s Legacy, to be published this November, by author Chris Heal In his latest local history, Ropley’s Legacy, to be published this November, author Chris Heal blows the lid off the theft of the commons and common fields along the Four Marks ridge in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Gentry, absentee aristocrats and successive bishops of Winchester and their clergy sought to gain complete control of community lands and to turn poor subsistence labourers into a low-wage, dependent workforce. They did this by calling on friends in parliament to give them absolute legal authority. Historian E. P. Thompson described the enclosure movement across the UK as a ‘plain enough case of class robbery’. Hampshire’s William Cobbett thought the ‘poor were sacrificed and needlessly sacrificed’. Heal delved into the Hampshire and parliamentary archives to find, translate and transcribe the original papers that tell the story of the enclosures of the commons that used to stretch from Soldridge, through Medstead, Chawton, Ropley and Farringdon to Newton Valence. He also calls on an extensive list of contemporary and modern literature. His work was supported by the Hampshire Archives Trust and by Ropley History Network and Archive. Each set of documents is meticulously analysed to disclose the machinations of the landowners. In twenty-five appendices, the laws and awards are reproduced in full. ‘Few people realise,’ said Heal, ‘that the very first parliamentary enclosure act in the UK in 1709 concerned Ropley and Farnham. The lead was taken by the then bishop, Jonathan Trelawney, in a calculated attempt to restore his family finances. The act was bitterly fought through petitions which were ignored.’ Beaten in parliament, villagers joined with local smugglers to wage a personal and violent campaign against the bishop and his deer parks led by the shadowy ‘King John’. Slaughtered venison was paraded through the streets on market days; park keepers were killed. Across the south, the poachers were highly-organised. They were asked by
‘I hope when people read the book they become angry at the blatant and avaricious behaviour of the rich landowners across the county,’ said Heal. ‘Some families living today behind high estate walls will be upset at the disclosures. I am happy with that.’ Ropley’s Legacy can be bought from November through local and internet bookstores. It is published at the same time as the second edition of Heal’s bestseller of last year, The Four Marks Murders, which has been updated with readers’ suggestions. Suspense, intrigue and mystery: Edgar Allen Poe’s Macabre Tales
Franchesca said, “When we were researching ideas for a play, The Macabre Tales stood out to us both, bringing something original yet still giving a unique show with darker themes.
Edgar Allen Poe was a master storyteller whose tales of mystery and horror have captured the imagination of readers across the world. This November, Titchfield Festival Theatre is delighted to present four of Edgar Allen Poe’s classic Macabre Tales that will have you constantly looking over your shoulder as you leave the theatre......
“There is a renewed interest in gothic culture and literature, together with the increasing appeal of Hallowe’en and spooky tales. The settings and time period it relates to seem to hit a chord with the current generation.”
The four plays are all very different and bring unique tales to the stage. William Wilson looks at the difference between good and evil, the Valdemar Case brings a twist and a look at how we strive to live forever. The Imp of the Perverse is a grim tale of our darkest thoughts and how we act upon them and finally, The System is a comedic show with a twist and is a terrific way to end the evening. It truly will be an evening of great entertainment from start to finish. The Macabre Tales are directed jointly by Franchesca Nicholson and Rebecca Weaving.

Jacobite intriguers to form regiments to support an invasion from France that would regain the English throne for the Stuart dynasty. The government responded with the draconian Black Act which brought the number of capital crimes to over two hundred. Troops were brought to the area. As poverty took a grip and harvests failed, food riots across Hampshire saw dozens hanged and transported. Through it all, the lords of the manor drove through more and more village enclosures.
Rebecca added, “The Macabre Tales are filled with intrigue, suspense and thought provoking themes. Everyone enjoys being scared just a little - or a lot - and this will add to the suspense. Humans will always have an interest in the macabre and mysteries; it exposes our own internal battles, fighting the good and evil within us – and reveals how we respond in those situations.” Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Edgar Allen Poe’s Macabre Tales opens at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane on Monday 22nd November until Saturday 27th November 2021. The shows start at 7.30pm. For more information including booking tickets, please go to www.titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com or contact us on: 0333 666 3366.

ROPLEY’S LEGACY THE RIDGE ENCLOSURES, 1709 TO 1850: Chawton, Farringdon, Medstead, Newton Valence and Ropley and the birth of Four Marks The very first private parliamentary enclosure in England was in 1709 in Ropley. Driven by the bishop of Winchester, it was a highly contested land grab seeking to make money by taking control of the common fields. Over 150 years, the government sanctioned theft spread to all the neighbouring ridge villages. Driven by greed and by debts from the ‘South Sea Bubble’, the county’s richest and most powerful men used wage and rent control, repressive game laws and rigged courts to get their way. The response was unexpected and threatened the core of society: venison raids
by armed, black-faced men against church, gentry and the crown, Hampshire smugglers to the fore, food riots and local men paid to form regiments to back the invasion of the Stuart pretenders. The establishment responded with England’s most vicious piece of legislation, the Black Act, stationed troops in Farnham and used forced labour, evictions, transportation and hangings. Ropley’s Legacy is a history of small battles all won by unscrupulous and determined landowners and lost by voiceless labouring families.

I’m Dreaming of an Alright Christmas (and dinner, with wine)
T

he purchase of presents and Quality Street? Done. In October. Christmas had started. Well, bits of it anyway; when you wanted to send a gift parcel to Australia, it paid to post early. Really early. Early enough that it could be attached to migrating humpback whales or whatever reduced the cost to less than dinner for two, with wine. There’d been a fleeting concern it was a little premature to find snowmen wrapping paper in the shops. She needn’t have worried. In the ‘seasonal’ aisle since the Easter eggs clearance sale, probably. Sucking on a toffee penny, she’d dusted off the ironing board and put it up in the kitchen to use as a handy platform for wrapping the presents. One of the dogs, curious about the unfamiliar noises, came sauntering into the room and with one wild-eyed look at the contraption, tucked her tail under her bottom and scarpered. “Yes – it has been a while. I’m a bit afraid of it too.” She called after the startled spaniel, as she reached for a green triangle. #Workingfromhome and not going out much meant not much had needed ironing. Silver linings. There’d been an ohmygod moment when she’d wandered online to order the shellfish platter for Christmas Eve. This was ‘not just a luxury shellfish platter’, you understand. Actually, it transpired that it was a ‘sold out luxury shellfish platter’. In disbelief, she ate an orange cream as she double-checked the date. Not yet November. Further investigation revealed other unavailable delights; various incarnations of turkey, there’d been a run on the lobster - and no partridges (pear tree presumably optional) were left at all. Should she panic and buy a frozen turkey? Distracting visions emerged of herself cramming a bird, the consistency and size of a small boulder, into an already overcrowded chest freezer, then sitting on the lid.. P’raps not just yet. At least, not until they’d made inroads into the largely unlabelled frozen contents with some ‘dinner roulette’. But the mental image of all that cramming and sitting on lids made her nostalgic for packing a suitcase. Particularly for the holiday she’d cancelled back in September. There’d been a number of factors, but worse than the fear that they’d get stuck abroad if they caught ‘it’ whilst away, had been the visit to the
36
vet. This revealed that the chirpily named Pet Passport had been replaced by something a lot less alliterative - and a good deal dearer. It amounted to three dinners out, with wine. Per dog. Christmas obsessing aside, she should do something about her other fixation; dinner, with wine. There’d been less socialising of late and honestly, she was sick of the sight of her saucepans. So she booked a table and whilst the ironing board was up, ate a purple one and a coconut éclair, and ironed a frock. Himself sauntered in and he too looked startled by the presence of the ironing board. When she asked what shirt he wanted to wear out to dinner, with wine, he seemed pleased. At least.. he didn’t look wild-eyed then scarper.. So that was good. Thankfully the tree was sorted. Arranged in tubs around the patio were firs of varying varieties, sizes and states of health. The trees of Christmas Past. Last year’s little chap had not yet outgrown its erstwhile corner of the sitting room. She’d dress it in some vintage decorations from the sixties – accompanied by festive offerings from the sublime Andy Williams and Bing Crosby. Chewing on another green triangle, she pondered that things were probably a lot simpler back when Bing and Andy ruled Yule. It wasn’t such a work up. Expectations were more realistic, less pretentious, modest. And so, with a small (and appropriately named) epiphany, she decided that she’d just go for a pared back, pressure off, less-ismore kind of a Christmas. Less disappointment if stuff didn’t happen. More celebration if it did. No fancy seafood platter, apparently. But there’d be a cake; stir up Sunday had produced a dark and hefty creation residing, suitably inebriated, in a tin. There’d be a Christmas lunch which may or may not include turkey. But there would be pigs in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes and veg – she was pretty sure that all of these were concealed somewhere in the freezer already. Might need to don arctic gear and go on a search and rescue mission to locate them… And pop out to buy some more Quality Street; she couldn’t work out where they’d all gone. Plus, to the relief of all, she’d put the ironing board away. This year, whatever might be missing, whatever might be sold out, Christmas, all of it, whatever all of it entailed, would be alright…

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Traditional Christmas Pudding Why not try something a little different this festive season by making your own Christmas Pudding. There are advantages to making your own, the pudding can be tailored for people with food allergies or those who prefer a less alcoholic version!
Stir together the flour, mixed spice and cinnamon in a very large mixing bowl. Add the cold shredded butter, sugar, lemon and orange zest, bread crumbs, nuts and stir again until all the ingredients are well mixed. Finally add the marinated dried fruits and stir again.
Ingredients
Beat the eggs lightly in a small bowl then stir quickly into the dry ingredients. The mixture should have a soft consistency. Spoon the mixture in to the greased pudding basin, gently pressing the mixture down with the back of a spoon. Cover with a double layer of greaseproof paper or baking parchment, then a layer of aluminium foil and tie securely with string.
• 450g dried mixed fruit • 1 small cooking apple, peeled, cored and finely chopped • Grated zest and juice of 1/2 a large orange and 1/2 a lemon • 4 tbsp brandy, plus a little extra for soaking at the end 2 oz / 55 g self-raising flour, sifted • 1 tsp ground mixed spice • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 4 oz / 110 g shredded cold butter (If you get suet, go for it instead of butter) • 4oz / 110g soft, dark brown sugar • 4 oz / 110 g white fresh bread crumbs • 1 oz / 25 g whole shelled almonds, roughly chopped • 2 large, eggs • Lightly butter a 2 1/2 pint / 1.4 litre pudding basin/17cm • 125 ml Brandy, rum or vodka (to flame the pudding) • 200g of rinsed yellow lentils • 375ml of vegetable stock • 1 teaspoon of ground tumeric
Method
Place the dried fruits, apple, orange and lemon juice into a large mixing bowl. Add the brandy and stir well. Cover the bowl with a lid and leave to marinate for a couple of hours, preferably overnight.
38
Place the pudding in a steamer and steam the pudding for 5 hours. Make sure you check the water level frequently so it never boils dry. Remove the pudding from the steamer, cool completely. Remove the paper, prick the pudding with a skewer and pour in a little extra brandy. Cover with fresh greaseproof paper and retie with string. Store in a cool dry place until Christmas day. On Christmas day reheat the pudding by steaming again for about an hour. To unmould the pudding, take off the parchment paper, put a plate on top and turn it upside down. To Flambé / flame the pudding, heat the brandy/ rum/ vodka in a small pan till it is hot, but turn off the heat before it boils, light the pan of brandy using a gas lighter or matchstick, then pour the flaming brandy over the pudding and enjoy the pudding with Brandy Sauce or Custard. Left over Christmas pudding can be reheated and served.

Spotlight - Emergency badger rescue in Beech...
In October HART were called out to a site in Beech where some construction work was taking place, after a badger had been spotted down an enormous hole in the earthworks. The team, with care, patience and skill, managed to catch the badger and remove it from the hole. Despite the badger being
40
in his more seasoned years, he thankfully presented no major concerns, suggesting his rescue must have taken place not long after he fell. On release, the badger was quickly off the mark and knew exactly where he was going! Stories like these are excellent reminders to all of us undertaking any sort of construction work (even small-scale work in the garden), that it is important to keep wildlife at the forefront of our minds and regularly check for animals, where possible covering any holes that they might fall into when not working on site.

Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

COMMUNITY
New Alresford Town Council Remembrance Day Project
A year ago, we decided to embark on a Remembrance Day project which has reached fruition this week! The good people of Alresford have knitted and crocheted over 4,000 poppies since the beginning of the year and these were displayed at St. John's church, the Memorial Gardens, and other locations in the town.
Huge thanks go to everyone involved including Six West for providing the wool at cost, the
42
Men's Shed for their skill and expertise in constructing the frameworks and R M Trailers for ensuring the displays were firmly anchored down. This has truly been a community effort - well done everyone. Poppies were also attached to lamp posts around the town, which together with all the knitted poppies were a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in two world wars and more than seventy other conflicts. Grants At our town council meeting in October, we were delighted to award two grants. Alresford PIGS was awarded £400.00 towards the Christmas tree in Broad Street which they organise each year. A second award of £1000 was given to Citizen’s Advice for their Outreach Service in Alresford. They have provided information around benefits, particularly Universal Credit, employment concerns and queries around health and community care to Alresford residents. We award grants to local groups and charities serving our community every quarter. If you would like to be considered, please submit your application by Monday 3rd January 2022. Applications will be considered at the next Town Council meeting on 25th January 2022. Please visit our website for more details. We look forward to hearing from you.
Winchester Basics Bank The Basics Bank will be open on Wednesday 22nd December and Wednesday 5th January from 10am to midday in the Lower meeting room, Alresford Recreation Centre. They will also be providing an emergency delivery service on 28th December together with providing food to families with children who normally get free school meals, during the holiday period.
order! Preferred payment method is by BACS adding your surname or company name as your reference, so that we can identify your payment. A copy of the order form will be on our website. Thank you for your continued support. Please contact us if you have any further queries. Calendars We are pleased to sponsor the Itchen Valley calendar once again this year. There is ample space for jotting down dates and activities, as well as containing beautiful pictures of Alresford and the surrounding areas. Copies can be obtained from the Co-op and Hellards Estate Agents in Alresford.
If you would like to donate food items in time for Christmas, then they have asked for you to do so by 14th December. There is a donation point at the Co-op in Alresford. For items that they are most in need of, and details of how they can help, then please visit their website www. winchesterbasicsbank.co.uk Hanging Basket Scheme 2022 By early January, businesses and homeowners in the town centre will receive an order form for the hanging baskets and trough scheme 2022. After the success of 2020, Alresford Rotary is again organizing a local ‘Christmas Song and Music Contest’, this year extending entrants to instrumentalists as well as singers. This will be our Alresford ‘Christmas Got Talent’ contest to find Singers and Musicians that can either put on a great performance or just provide fun and entertainment value. We would love to have entries from individuals, duets, families, children, school classes, choirs and bands. Entry is open to all residents of Alresford and surrounding villages. There will be great prizes to win including fantastic Hampers and Alresford gift vouchers and all proceeds will go to Alresford Rotary charitable causes.
ask for a minimum donation of £5 for each entry. You can make your donation online by going to JustGiving.com and searching for Alresford Rotary. We look forward to receiving your entries no later than 8th January 2022. All proceeds go to local Rotary charities. Sing, play, have fun and help others this Christmas!
How to enter: 1. Record a video on your phone of you singing or playing one Christmas song or tune (modern or traditional). Maximum recommended time of 3 minutes. 2. Send your recording to rotary.alresford. giving@gmail.com with your full name and postcode. This book consists of biographies of three relatives of Gilbert White the naturalist – his father, his brother, and his nephew. All called John, rather confusingly. They were very different, however. The father was originally a barrister in London. Later he settled at The Wakes in Selborne, leading a blameless life “devoted …to family life, country pursuits, music, …charitable interests” and the improvement of his own garden and the

children to come and give rugby a go (we offer free taster sessions) and we have plans in the pipeline for further growing our friendly Minis section. On the social side, a very successful Sponsors’ Lunch was held on 23rd October as we had a double-header, i.e. two home games, on that day. A fine time was had by all with both teams recording emphatic wins. Our upcoming fixtures in December 2021 and early January 2022 are listed below albeit you can always find details on our website (alresfordrfc. co.uk) or in our free handbook that is now available at various businesses within Alresford. ARFC 1st XV
During the autumnal run-in to the return of fully competitive rugby, Alresford’s 1st XV recorded a narrow loss and a heavy defeat before hitting a purple patch of 5 wins in a row, which resulted in 3rd place in the Hampshire Premier League in early November, before slipping a place due to an away loss to Millbrook. Meanwhile, Alresford Vagrants have had mixed fortunes, winning 2 from 8 games thus far, whilst maintaining massive enthusiasm and commitment. The minis support continues to grow with Sunday morning coaching sessions generally exceeding 100 children accompanied by their parents, several of whom help in running the sessions, and even better this season we are now able to again have joint training/fixtures with other clubs and attend some festivals. Our U8s and U9s have attended the Hampshire re-boot festivals - the first time we have been at festivals playing against other clubs in nearly 2 years and the kids have had an amazing time and acquitted themselves brilliantly. Our other age groups are attending their Hampshire re-boot festivals in the run up to Christmas. We have welcomed many new faces this season and would love to welcome more
Hampshire Fare Returns To Winchester’s Christmas Market Hampshire Fare, the county food and drink group, is returning to Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market, taking over a chalet from 5th to 22nd December. Hampshire Fare took over a chalet at Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market for the first time in 2019. The chalet proved a great success as it allowed smaller artisan producers to have a presence at this Christmas Market which has a national profile. It also provided visitors with an opportunity to discover a continually changing selection of local food and drink to purchase as gifts or for festive feasts. This year the Hampshire Fare chalet will continue this format with a rota of 16 producers – each taking over the chalet on different days. This means there is always something new for visitors to discover, including local ales, gins and wines, artisan chocolates, homemade fudge and shortbread, locally roasted coffee, smoked trout and Hampshire charcuterie. Visitors simply need to look for the sign of the Hampshire Hog - the emblem for Hampshire Fare. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, said “We are very excited that the Hampshire Hog is returning to Winchester Cathedral’s

Christmas Market! We are confident that many are dreaming of a local Christmas this year and the Hampshire Fare Chalet is a great opportunity for visitors to buy quality individual gifts and stock up with delicious food and drink that’s perfect for celebrations. “The past 18 months has seen a growing appreciation of local. Here at Hampshire Fare we are aware of a massive increase in interest in sourcing and supporting local. Conscious consumerism is on the rise with people making purchases based on making a positive social, economic and environmental impact, so we expect buying local this Christmas will be more popular than ever.” One of the Hampshire Fare members who took advantage of this marketing opportunity in 2019 and is returning this year is owner and chocolatier Trevor Smith of Beaulieu Chocolate Studio. Trevor Smith commented: “We love the atmospheric location of Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market, and we are looking forward to bringing our own Christmas cheer with our handmade chocolate bars and seasonal favourites such as dipped orange, mints, New Forest Bark and hot chocolate dippers. Roll on December!” The Hampshire Fare team is manning the Chalet on Monday 6th December and Monday 13th December handing out free Local Produce Guides and advising visitors about finding local. The Hampshire Fare Chalet will be available from Sunday 5th to Wednesday 22nd December inclusive, with opening hours from 10.00am-8.00pm Thursday to Saturday and 10.00am-6.30pm Sunday to Wednesday.
