Bespoke Kitchen Fitting & Kitchen Makeovers Before

After

Beautiful Made-To-Measure Kitchens This is the second time we have used Happy Kitchens and once again we are over the moon with the results! For our latest project, in a much bigger kitchen than previously, Ben spent time with us sharing ideas for how we could make better use of the space, new design ideas to modernise and make an impact whilst still maintaining the storage space we need with an expanding family. He also had suggestions on how to reduce costs by making layout changes. The finished layout is fantastic, looks amazing and works so much better than the old design. Plus it’s left us with more storage than we know what to do with! Bonus! We won’t hesitate to continue to recommend Happy Kitchens to anyone looking for a new kitchen. Highly recommend!

Anna Cutler

 Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

PROPERTY

The importance of having your Itchen Valley Property Fully Managed

Importantly a landlord can offset management fees against tax, along with any repairs needed during a tenancy.

The recent publication of the Fair Private Rented Sector White Paper highlights the increasing legislation regulating landlords and granting increased rights for tenants causing further complications for private residential landlords.

Marishelle Butler Management

To ensure you are not penalised, commission a professional letting agent who will:

• Make sure all legislation and safety requirements have been complied with. • Manage the tenant and any difficulties arising from the tenancy. • Check and take care of your property using trusted contractors from the Itchen Valley area. • Negotiate renewals and dilapidations at check out. • Expect to achieve a higher level of demand for your property as tenants prefer Fully Managed properties.

The Country House Company has been Fully Managing properties in the Itchen Valley for over 25 years. Our management team is professionally qualified; we have all been living in the area for over 20 years and work with trusted local contractors known to the team. We have a dedicated management phone manned by members of our team 24 hours a day ensuring that your property is in safe hands through out a tenancy. A Spoonful of Sugar © Lucia Foster-Found 2022 www.luciafosterfound.com

“HFSS. What do you think it means?” Himself was frowning. It sounded familiar. “Is it a bank? No, wait, it’s that thing you get before a web address – I don’t know what it stands for.” She wasn’t being much help. “No.. I don’t think it is.” He shook his head. “Isn’t that htpp something? But I don’t know what that stands for either, although I’ve got a feeling that the P might be for protocol?” They were sat in their car outside the Cinema. Having arrived very early to be able to park outside (it was raining), both were consulting their phones to pass the time before the film started. She looked it up. “HFSS stands for High in Fat, Salt and Sugar. Why?” Himself looked resigned. “I thought as much.” She felt for him. Post-surgery he was intent on shedding some weight, but he looked so sad when, valiantly, he tried to make more healthy choices when they went out. To be fair, the recent publishing of calories on menus was quite helpful, in a deeply depressing way. One frightened look at the dessert menu and they’d stopped eating puddings altogether. “I wondered what these red markings were that seem to have suddenly appeared on food packaging.” He said. She was pretty sure the traffic light system had been there a while, but perhaps he’d been in denial, so she explained. “It gives a separate colour for each group; fat, saturates, sugar and salt. Green means low levels; ‘fill your boots’, I suppose. Amber is medium; ‘pause for thought, shall I, shan’t I’? And well, red is…” “Red is ‘step away from the pain au chocolat’.” He sighed. “What are you looking at?” Curious, she leaned across as he tilted the screen of his phone towards her. Oh dear. Yes – so many different types of pastry, all clustered enticingly on one Ocado page. “These are a few of my favourite things’ as the song goes.” He said, in a wistful tone. Hot water crust was well represented, together with puff, short, flaky and choux. It was like Himself’s greatest hits compilation of pies, pasties, turnovers and eclairs – poor darling.. “Look, it’s not entirely a case of cease and desist - it’s more… all things in moderation.” She said consolingly as Himself gave the delicious pictures one more look of longing before sighing and

12

switching off his phone and remarking. “Seems we’ve come a long way since Elizabethans blackened their teeth – it was actually fashionable to look as if you ate too much sugar. How things have changed.” “Let’s hope that doesn’t come back on trend; black teeth and ruffs.” She shuddered. “Like leg warmers and court shoes. Disastrous.” “Hey - I bet there aren’t many children’s films these days advocating spoonfuls of sugar to help the medicine go down.” He commented. “Probably not – although I think the meaning was more metaphorical than monosaccharide.” She reasoned - and hummed it in her head. “Bread and dripping.” He announced. “There’s another thing.” “Yep. Staple Sunday night tea of my childhood.” She agreed, and salivated. Bet that would flash up a red light if you could buy it in the shops. Shame. So delicious. Her stomach rumbled. As they sat there fantasising about food, it occurred to her that they should have eaten before going to the Cinema. “Come on, let’s go in. We can have some flatbread and hummus or something.” Himself looked momentarily excited, then asked. “Is it HFSS?” “Who knows? It won’t come in a packet, so we’ll have no idea.” She said cheerily, whilst privately wondering if flatbread and hummus was the 21 Century’s answer to bread and dripping. “Either way, it will stop us obsessing about food.” Sat in the comfort and semi-darkness of the movie theatre, they finished their snacks. The endless trailers were coming to an end; she’d now seen all the best bits of half a dozen films. Also annoyingly, ‘the medicine go down, the medicine go dowwwwn’, was still chirping away in her head as she got up from the plush sofa they had commandeered. “I’m just going to nip to the loo. Want anything else whilst I’m out there?” She asked. “Coffee please, but no sugar..” “Not even a spoonful?” Himself assumed a beatific expression of almost angelic proportions as he looked up at her. “No thank you. I believe the phrase is ‘I’m sweet enough already’.” And, she considered, as she smiled down at him, he was right.

Scarification. What is it and why does it matter? A lot is said about the importance of lawn scarification as part of a regular lawncare regime. Let’s take a look at why this is so important and how to get it right. What is scarification? In simple terms, it is raking the surface of the lawn, vigorously. If the lawn area is relatively small, this can be carried out with a spring-tine rake. However, it’s worth realising in advance that this can be hard work. If you are attempting it with a rake, take it slowly, one small area at a time. And be prepared for blisters! For larger lawn areas, or lawns that are very mossy or thatched and need more intense work, a rake is simply not going to cut the mustard. In these cases, a powered scarifier is required. We meet many homeowners who have what they refer to as a scarifier. Usually what they have is an electric power-rake. The difference is really in the ability of the machine, and the way they rake the surface of the lawn. An electric power-rake usually has spring tines that spin. A professional scarifier will have either fixed or flexible blades which will cope with more challenging conditions. Why does your lawn need to be scarified?

There are several reasons that a lawn needs this type of work. Firstly, it’s worth saying that even lawns in great condition will benefit from annual scarification.

Lawns can be made up of many different varieties of grass. Some grass types Build up of organic matter causing thatch tend to shed more dead leaves. Some send out runners across the surface of the lawn, which over time can create a mat of organic matter that can create thatch issues. Surface lawn thatch can prevent moisture, nutrients, and air from reaching the roots of your lawn. In addition, thatch can harbour the pathogens that cause red-thread and fusarium patches. These common lawn diseases are unsightly and controlling thatch can reduce that problem. For this reason, annual scarification should make up part of your lawn management plan. If a lawn already has a thatch issue, then intensive scarification, along with work to boost the soil biology will break this down, and in doing so release organic nutrition into the soil.

16

For lawns that have deteriorated to the point where they need renovation work, scarification is an integral part of that process. Many lawns will suffer from issues of moss build up. If not dealt with this moss can begin to take over the lawn, During Scarification smothering out grass that struggles to compete. Moss may be soft to walk on and green in winter, but it soon dries out, leaving a brown lawn over the summer months. In addition, certain grass pests prefer mossy lawns. If left unaddressed, moss can be a serious lawn problem. In these instances, a petrol-powered, professional lawn scarifier is needed to remove the moss. After the moss has been removed it is essential to treat the area to kill any remaining moss or spores. This is also an ideal time to over-seed the lawn. Newer grass varieties are greener, deeper rooted, harder wearing, more drought and disease tolerant and faster to establish. If your existing lawn is looking bare or tired, then seeding after scarification is the way to go. Regular lawn treatments to provide the correct nutrition for your grass, feed soil microbial activity to break down organic matter and prevent the build-up of thatch and treat and kill moss over the winter will help create a lawn you can be proud of. When to scarify a lawn Typically, this type of work should be carried out in the early spring or autumn depending on the weather and soil conditions. Lawns that tend to become mossy over winter are better to scarify in the spring – removing that moss build-up and preparing the lawn to be at its best over the warmer months to follow. But be careful. Larger lawns, where there is no option to irrigate, scarified too late in the spring, as we move into warmer, drier weather, may take longer to recover. Now is the time to be thinking about how you want your lawn to look this year. Maintaining a great lawn can be more complicated than many people appreciate. Local Advice & Assistance 20

Winchester Citizens Advice Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District gives advice on what to do when you’re looking to employ someone to make repairs to your home. I’ve got loads of problems with my house that I’ve been putting off fixing - a faulty boiler, a window that won’t shut properly, broken light fittings. The list goes on! I want to sort it out but I’ve had bad experiences with dodgy builders in the past. How do I find someone I can trust? Making home improvements can be stressful, but there are a few steps you can follow to help it go smoothly. First, find a Trading Standards ‘approved trader’. You can look for one in your area online or use the Government’s approved trader scheme TrustMark. It’s also worth checking if they’re a current member of a trade body. Trade bodies have codes of practice and can help resolve problems if things go wrong. Ask who they’re registered with and then check the trade body’s website. For any gas and electric fixes, only use certified traders - it’s dangerous to use

someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. You can check the Gas Safe Register for a list of traders and use a registered electrician who can certify their own work. It’s always helpful to get references or recommendations where possible. Ask your friends, family or neighbours if they know of anyone they’d recommend. You can also ask the person you hire for examples of work they’ve carried out in the past. Try to avoid contractors who won’t give references - it’s a sign they could be dishonest. When you find someone, ask for a written quote - this is different to an estimate. A quote is legally binding and the tradesperson can’t change it without a good reason - for example, if you ask for extra work to be done. It’s worth comparing quotes from several contractors to make sure you’re getting a fair price. Next, get a written contract. This should cover exactly what you’re paying for and everything you’ve agreed on, including timings, payments, who will pay for materials and any subcontractors if needed. When it comes to payment, it’s best to

huge demand during the pandemic and are continuing to support those older people who need it including those struggling with the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills.

The Age UK charity shop in Alresford is in urgent need of volunteers and is appealing to the local community to join the team and help out. As well as undertaking a varied role with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people, volunteers also help make a real difference to Age UK’s work supporting older people across the UK. The appeal comes as part of Volunteers’ Week 2022, which runs from 1st – 7th June and celebrates the people who contribute their time and talents to help make a difference.

“Volunteering in an Age UK shop is exciting, varied and rewarding,” says Volunteer at the Age UK Alresford shop. “No two days are ever the same – you meet so many people and are always kept busy. The shop team are supportive and has helped me to develop new skills and grow with my role. It’s great knowing that I am gaining experience and making new friends whilst helping Age UK support older people who don’t have anyone else to turn to. I would recommend volunteering in an Age UK shop to anyone!”

Age UK is dependent on the support and dedication of volunteers, who help Charity’s shops raise vital funds for its work and services for older people who have no one else to turn to. These include Age UK’s free, national Advice Line and Telephone Friendship Service, both of which were in

opt to pay in stages rather than upfront. Try to pay by card if you can - this can give you extra safeguards if something goes wrong. Finally, make sure your trader is fully insured. Keep copies of receipts and your written contract. These will be important as evidence if things go wrong. It’s also helpful to take photos of any problems if they arise. If you have a problem with a contractor and you’re not sure what to do, call the national Citizens Advice consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 or if you’d like to talk to a local adviser at Citizens Advice Winchester District, call 0808 278 7861.

You’ll gain valuable skills and experience while volunteering alongside a team of passionate and friendly people, as well as help make a real difference in what Age UK can achieve. COMMUNITY / WELLBEING

Winchester Councillor - Fiona Isaacs Businesses raise urgent concerns An application for parking bay suspension on Broad Street for 6th, 7th and 8th June for filming was received. As soon as this came to my notice I contacted Winchester City Council to establish who had ensured that the local businesses were fully informed. It transpired that this had not taken place and I contacted the businesses individually to establish how they felt and to inform them of the application in full. After a lot of consultation with the parking team and the film location manager, we managed to get a reduction on the loss of parking spaces. This should never have happened without consultation. The town needs the parking to keep businesses going and they suffer terribly when they are blocked off. On-Street parking Hampshire County Council has confirmed that consultation will take place before decisions are made. I met with Cllr Rob Humby, Leader of Hampshire County Council (HCC) who has kept economy in his portfolio. I raised the concerns about on-street parking in Alresford and Cllr Humby has agreed to a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and businesses to listen to concerns. Businesses recognise that things will potentially need to change to get parking enforcement in the town. Winchester City Council (WCC )are currently not investing in this and the lack of enforcement has been frustrating for many residents and businesses. WCC has dropped their service level by 30%, something that should not have dropped by more than 1%. At present they have three traffic enforcement officers for the entire district. I have always opposed parking meters and it will not be an easy situation with Car parks managed by WCC and on-street by Hampshire CC. Enforcement needs to be funded and a balance needs to be carefully managed. Safety concerns raised by residents I called an urgent meeting to discuss the lack of grass cutting in the town again and areas of concern over safety and visibility. A new team is working in our area and they are equally concerned about the lack of visibility, and the safety issues that arise from them, residents have commented that the town looks a mess in some places. I raised concerns about areas that had not been cut all year and had been accidentally missed on the agreed cutting sites. The team grass-cutting team informed me that they were constantly stopped by unhappy residents. I am still receiving calls about this issue and never thought that the reduced cutting project would affect areas like junctions. As a market town, we need to be presentable, and safe and not put people at risk.

Alresford Surgery News Dispensary service Over the summer months (From now until September) it is likely to take longer for prescriptions to be handled by our dispensary due to staffing levels. Therefore please ensure that you place your medication requests in plenty of good time. Please also remember that when attending the surgery, even if just to collect a prescription that you are required to wear a face mask unless you have a medical exemption. Thank you. Be tick aware! Watch out there are ticks about! It's the perfect condition for these mini beasts. Here's a helpful reminder of some simple 'tick tips' if you're out walking. These tiny insects, which can transmit bacteria such as Lyme disease, can be found throughout the year but are most active between spring and autumn. They are typically found in woodland, grassland, moorland or heathland but are also found in urban parks and gardens. When out walking, remember to keep to footpaths, avoiding long grass. ‘Tick tips’ for walkers include: • Wear appropriate clothing (a long-sleeve shirt and trousers tucked into your socks) • Use an insect repellent • Wear light coloured fabrics that may help you spot a tick on your clothes • Inspect your skin for ticks, particularly at the end of the day, including your head, neck and skin folds (armpits, groin and waistband) • Check your children’s head and neck areas, including their scalp (skin on top of their head) • Check that pets do not bring ticks into your home in their fur. • If you do get bitten by a tick, removing it quickly and correctly can help to reduce any potential risk. The only safe way to remove a tick is to use a pair

of fine-tipped tweezers, or an easy-to- use device which can be purchased from pharmacies or vets. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upwards slowly and firmly, as mouthparts left in the skin can cause a local infection. Once removed, apply antiseptic to the bite area and keep an eye on it for several weeks for any changes Contact your GP if you begin to feel unwell or develop a circular red skin rash, often described as a bull’s-eye rash, and remember to tell them that you were bitten by a tick. See NHS Choices for more information on signs, symptoms and treatments for Lyme disease. https:// www.nhs.uk/conditions/lyme-disease/ The Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS) NHS England and NHS Improvement have developed a new service called The Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS). The service is helping to alleviate pressure on GP appointments and emergency departments, in addition to harnessing the skills and medicines knowledge of pharmacists. If you phone us with a minor condition, you may be referred to the local Pharmacy for a face to face consultation with the Pharmacist. Our reception team will listen to your symptoms, assess if you are suitable from a list of criteria and then refer you to a community pharmacy, where you can go

Bites and stings Colds Congestion Ear and eye problems Gastric and Bowel issues including indigestion and constipation • Hayfever • Pain or swelling • Skin problems such as eczema, warts, verruca’s and athletes foot. • Mouth and throat problems Once the Pharmacist has assessed you, they will recommend a suitable treatment. Should the Pharmacist not be able to help you or your ailment needs to be escalated or referred to an alternative service, the pharmacist can then arrange this. Children and Young Persons Social Prescribers (Under 25’s) Social prescribing involves working with our social prescribers to think about what things are most important to you and helping you to connect to community organisations that align with what matters. Usually, people have around 1-6 sessions where they would think about what they would like to become involved in and what steps they need to take to get there. You can self refer to this service or may be referred by one of the practice team. This support might be useful for you if: • You feel ready to get involved in new things but don’t know how/ lack confidence • You are willing to try something new and are quite self-motivated • You don’t want specific mental health input but feel being more active or connected to the community would help your wellbeing. www.alresfordsurgery.co.uk

Alresford Rotary News Maggot racing for Beginners!

Alresford Rotary was pleased to support the Platinum Jubilee Picnic in the Park on 4th June and thanks all who contributed to the organisation and success of the day, particularly town councillors Keith Divall and Marilyn Weston.

Rotary’s principal contribution was to introduce a new game to Arlebury Park – to join Football, Rugby, Tennis – Maggot racing!

of encouragement could be heard across Arlebury Park and beyond! The equipment was very easy to put together. A pint of maggots was purchased from a fishing tackle shop but could have been bought online from willyworms.com and the racetrack was made by partitioning a rectangular piece of hardboard into 5 tracks. For each race, four or five maggots were positioned at one end of each track (no starting blocks were used) and the maggot that reached the other end first was the winner. Whether there is potential for a hurdles race at a future event remains to be seen! Field events are unlikely but the success of Alresford Rotary’s initial foray into maggot racing (which generated about £100 for Rotary charities) does pose the problem that there is already significant clamour for it to be a staple ingredient of future Rotary fundraising events!

Wessex Rotary Shoebox Scheme

last year will be contacted but it is not just a scheme for schools. Everyone and all local organisations are encouraged to take part – please contact us!

Stratton Bates Playground

Work has started on the construction and installation of the new children’s playground at the Stratton Bates recreation ground. As of mid-June, the opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at 2.00pm on Thursday 21st July. Alresford Rotary is pleased to have made a financial contribution to what promises to be a wonderful community facility, thanks principally to a generous legacy from former Grange Road residents Mike and Bridget Newitt.

And Finally…

Simple ideas are very often the ones that work best and that’s how it was that many punters whiled away the afternoon racing maggots. The age range of the punters stretched over 80 years, truly making it an activity to be enjoyed by the whole family and as the maggots wriggled their way towards the finishing line loud shouts

For anyone wishing to make an early start in preparing Christmas shoeboxes of gifts for disadvantaged and displaced children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania the scheme leaflets are now available (wjrp@hotmail.co.uk 738788). Because in recent years it has become increasingly difficult to source boxes of the prescribed size empty boxes will now be provided and will be available shortly. The new Rotary year starts on 1st July bringing to an end Jonathan Read’s two years as President of Alresford Rotary, twice the normal term. Alresford Rotary thanks Jonathan for steering it through a time of Covid “choppy waters” and looks forward to the leadership of the new helmsman, David Marshall! If you would like to make a difference in your local community please let us know. We’d love to hear from you! James Pinniger & Andrew Castillo www.alresford-rotary.org

CHOCOLATE DIPPED STRAWBERRIES

A recipe for making these delicious chocolate dipped strawberries, as a petit four is the perfect way to end a summer lunch or picnic, served with Hipster's hand roasted coffee or a chilled glass of sweet Jurancon, with its fragrant delicate notes of peach and pear!

“One must ask children and birds how cherries and strawberries taste” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

I love making these with friends and children as a fun thing to do. For the wow factor, you’ll need some pretty mini cases available now in the home baking section at good supermarkets. Ingredients • 100 gms Dark chocolate 70% cocoa • 1 punnet of fresh picked English Strawberries with stalks intact Method First, wash the strawberries and allow them to dry on kitchen paper. They must be completely dry for the chocolate to stick to them.

30

Break the chocolate into pieces then melt gently in a thick-sided bowl over a saucepan of water at boiling temperature. ( a Bain Marie ). When the chocolate has completely melted leave to cool slightly.

Beat the chocolate with a large spoon until glossy and smooth and beginning to thicken slightly. Take a firm hold of the stalk of a strawberry and gently dip and coat with chocolate about twothirds of the way up the berry. Without letting the chocolate smudge allow to set. You can use a cake cooling rack or something similar. When set transfer to paper cases chocolate side up. Keep refrigerated. These are best eaten fresh and will last for a day or so. Ring out the bells; 2022 sees Perins School Theatre take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame. A story of inclusion, longing acceptance, love rendered impossible and free will. After three years our students are ecstatic to be returning to the stage for what promises to be our most fantastic production yet. This year we had 438 students audition and have cast over 160 students, the enthusiasm for this production, this story, has ignited our school community.

HAKESPEARE IN

At Perins we understand the importance of nurturing the Arts, as we always have, We believe that now even more so, the Arts in schools make our children more resilient, confident and able to express themselves positively in this modern world. This is why we strive to provide our students with a professional West End experience, we have built a ‘Big top’, hired professional practitioners to teach practical, skill-enhancing workshops, have been able to work with some talented choreographers and even recruited a Community Orchestra. If you have ever seen one of our productions you will know how incredibly talented our students are, witnessed the creative ambition of our Creative Arts department and how a community pulls together to create wonderful memories for our students. ‘This wasn’t a school performance. This was a professional, slick, romantic and gritty show. The last four minutes contained some of the most intense drama I have ever seen.’ Winchester Today on West Side

We have also filmed our new promotional film, which can be seen here, working with Pageant Productions, on location at the stunning Winchester College, we think this is our best film yet! Rachel Hudson & The Selborne Landscape Partnership present

T

From the Margins

he exhibition, From The Margins, is created in response to the work of The Selborne Landscape Partnership, restoring the countryside that was home to Gilbert White and Jane Austen. Initially working in conservation communication, Rachel Hudson is known for her lively, yet authentic approaches to natural history illustration and social engagement. She has earned recognition in the UK and US for her collaborations with leading organisations to champion wildlife at risk, captivate audiences and prompt positive change. Taking inspiration from her interest in Medieval stained glass and illuminated manuscripts, Rachel invites you into the microworlds of the field margins. While drawing on the legacy of Medieval art, this exhibition introduces elements from our own time and place.

Part I

The Selborne Bestiary is a visual metaphor for declining species in isolated habitat fragments and the importance of a joinedup ‘mosaic approach’ in conservation that aims to create an interconnected, functioning landscape for wildlife, alongside agriculture. It is informed by compartment portraits of medieval bestiaries that showcase representative beasts and stress the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Following decades of intensive farming, there is only one species per square, nature at the minimum. Our increasing consumer demands come at the expense of the health of the natural environment. What happens in between the squares and how these species can survive and thrive in the contemporary farmed landscape, is explored in Margins.

Part II

Margins show you what life can look like when field margins are planted, managed and reconnected by farmers and volunteers. Witness the energy and struggles of the changing seasons, where predator and prey find food and shelter, while farmers are busy with their labours of the months, to produce our food. At two metres high, these Margins play with the central convention of Medieval marginalia (tiny doodles at the edges of books). Centre-

38

stage and large-scale, here they arm the beauty and purpose of seemingly untidy and unimportant strips of land.

The Selborne Landscape Partnership

Established in 2014 with the idea that if farmers collaborated at the landscape scale to conserve nature the whole would be more than the sum of the parts – and where better to set about doing this than in a parish which has had its nature immortalised by Gilbert White. It quickly transpired that this collaboration was about much more than farmers as a range of local wildlife organisations got on board and a small army of amateur naturalists enthusiastically gave up their time for surveys to guide action on the ground. Now we are delighted to be part of this new artistic collaboration with Rachel Hudson. Her beautifully evocative illustrations of our field margin species demonstrate how conservation needs art as well as heart to grow public support, giving us an opportunity to share the work we do in a compelling way. Following in the footsteps of the many talented illustrators of numerous editions of The Natural History of Selborne Rachel wonderfully captures and celebrates the beauty and diversity of Selborne’s farmed landscape and its wild inhabitants. William Selborne, Lead Farmer, Selborne Landscape Partnership

much silver - but is a game combining skill and daring, played in the sunshine and shade of a beautiful English summer afternoon.

Yes, the challenge may be great, but with practice and tenacity you too could emulate Sir Francis, or at the very least appreciate why, even with the enemy in sight, he chose to finish the game before grabbing the galleon keys and sailing forth to victory. You can have every expectation that, following a few weeks of practice and training, and enjoyable internal competitions against other club members, you will be able to relish tea and refreshments as a member of a winning team, after an exhilarating game against a skilled but evidently not invincible opponent.

Apart from our practice roll-ups and internal competitions, (see details below), Home and Away matches against local teams are usually played either on a weekend or on a Wednesday afternoon, and we try to arrange that teams are chosen such that all club members can have their chance to play in several matches, thus improving their game and seeing a little more of the world of bowling.

Of course, bowls isn’t all about winning – after all, the sideboard can only carry so

Fresh from his hugely successful Broadway debut, Derren returns home to the UK to launch his first brand new theatre show in six years: Showman. The content of the show remains a closely guarded secret, but if you’ve seen him before, you know you’re in for a powerhouse treat!

School of Rock is the global hit musical based on the iconic movie starring Jack Black. Wannabe rock star Dewey Finn is cast out by his dive-bar bandmates and finds himself in desperate need of cash. Posing as a substitute music teacher at an elite prep school, he exposes his students to the rock gods he idolises, transforming them into a mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pintsized prodigies what it means to truly rock out, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, Miss Mullins, helping her rediscover the wild child within. But, will they all find redemption at the battle of the bands?

COMMUNITY / HOME

Jackie’s County Corner for July I’ve been campaigning for better broadband in my County division for about ten years now. As government services started to transfer online by 2005, getting any functioning broadband at all was the first problem. This picture is of me with Dudley Rees as Gigabeam developed an alternative private service to which many of us still subscribe. The challenge is now for services delivering a much faster speeds direct to every home… Despite the promises, each improvement in internet speed proudly announced by Government only reaches around 95% of our homes; this leaves 1 in 20 homes lagging far behind. If you live in an area with fast speeds, the ‘rolling circle’ on your TV will be a distant memory, but to many of us, this still happens! The Community Fibre Partnership (CFP) scheme was designed to enable communities to sort out their own service direct with providers registered by the Dept of Culture Media and Sport, the DCMS. This is not ideal, because if services are to be truly universal, it should be exactly that- available to everyone. From the start I have argued that we wouldn’t want to live in a home where water just dripped slowly out of the taps, so why would we want to live in an area of poor internet connectivity? In June, at my request, HCC Scrutiny took a second look at the extremely slow roll out of the Government-led CFP scheme. The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK, BDUK refused the invitation to come along. In the face of increasing uncertainty that the last 5% of homes will benefit from the commercial rollout, I have urged the County to extend their budget for these schemes for another year, which could help get these schemes become a reality in our rural communities. More details are on my website: if you have a query, please contact me. Thank you to everyone who hosted, helped and/or attended events to make the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations so special for us all. I didn’t want to pick out just one photo- there were so many events of all shapes and sizes! I’m sure you’ll agree that it was a great weekend, all in honour of Elizabeth II’s reign for 70 years. Please don’t forget: If you are hosting a Ukrainian family, why not go along to the WCC Support Hub at The Guildhall on Tuesday morning from 10 to 12 noon. All guests and hosts welcome, refreshments provided. Hampshire County Council is asking for your views on proposed changes for local and community transport. The consultation closes on the 24th July. Go to www.hants.gov.uk/passengertransport-consultation or phone 0300 555 1388 for a paper copy. I really hope that you can enjoy these precious summer months! But if you need help, details are below. WIT TEN BY EMMA HEARING

ooking on as a helpless outsider to the Ukrainian crisis has made me realise the importance of war reporting more than ever before. I can speak from personal experience, as I was married to a war correspondent for twenty years. It is due to the courage of some of these brave journalists that wars such as those in Ukraine, can be reported back to the rest of the world with a greater degree of accuracy. We lived in Nairobi in the mid-'90s, where Roger was the BBC East Africa Correspondent. During that time he escaped kidnap threats, was shot on a balcony in Rwanda (Hotel de Mille Collines which was the inspiration for “Hotel Rwanda”) and had many other narrow escapes. Miraculously, over two decades he came through all the many conflicts unscathed. He had an innate way of smelling out danger, but backing off when it became too risky. Sadly, not all of our friends made it through, including an American colleague Dan Eldon, who was among one of the journalists mobbed and killed by a crowd in Mogadishu when Roger was in Somalia. We visited Rwanda together soon after the civil war had ended, to cover a story on how far the Rwandan gorillas (as opposed to guerillas) had escaped into the forests and volcanoes of the Virunga mountains. It turned into rather a gruelling trip when we were diverted to cover a story unfolding at a nearby football stadium, where thousands of deceased Rwandans were being reburied into individual graves. I naively followed along, not knowing what to expect. I shall never forget the sights and smells we saw that day. Some of the journalists and aid workers I knew were mistakenly attracted to the adrenalin of war. They certainly were a colourful bunch; this was no more apparent than with Emma McCune. In spite of her Catholic upbringing, she fell in love with a Warlord, Riek Machar, who took her to live with his tribe in South Sudan. She had her own bodyguard who was with her at all times,

44

but tragically died a few years later. There were rumours that a rival faction leader had been responsible (although not the case). Emma’s story is recounted in a book by her mother, “Emma’s War; Love, Betrayal and Death in the Sudan” by Deborah Scroggins. Whether it was to go to Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon or another war, this involved dropping everything, grabbing a flak jacket, helmet, and in those days a huge satellite phone. Sometimes, “the big cheeses” as they were known, would `gazump’ Roger in the process of going to war. Journalists like John Simpson, George Alagiah, Jeremy Bowen and Lyse Doucet, would call to ask if he could cover their presenting shifts on Radio 4. This, I was at least grateful for when our children were little. Alice used to find it quite amusing to hear him broadcast live, and loved to pronounce “Slobodan Milosevic”; no wonder she ended up being a journalist. I would often turn on the World Service in the middle of the night when they were babies, to hear Roger’s dulcet tones talking to me down the radio waves. Improving technology has greatly helped today’s war correspondent. No need now to heave around enormous satellite phones (they had to leave one hurriedly on a runway in Mogadishu once). Flak jackets are getting a lot lighter to wear. In Africa in the ‘90s, a live broadcast wasn’t always possible, so they would hash together what was known as a “codded two-way”. The questions and answers were prerecorded, and Roger was made to wear a fake earpiece to make it look “live”! The images of war have also definitely become more graphic with the advent of new technologies, and the BBC claim today, that they have an obligation to film ‘the desperate reality’ of a conflict. I disagree with journalists going behind enemy lines, but if they decide to do so for the sake of a story, then who are we to judge if they choose to risk their own lives. Journalists like Marie Colvin who was killed, and the BBC’s Frank Gardener who was shot and badly injured in Saudi, are examples of what can happen when it goes wrong. All of the ones that I know say it is a risk worth taking. I know that I can speak for all of us however, when I say that we pray for a swift ending to the current crisis in Ukraine.

New Play Area at Stratton Bates

Exciting news at Stratton Bates Recreation Ground! Work is well underway with the construction of a brand-new play area. The new play area is funded by the town residents via the council with contributions from, Alresford PIGS, Rotary and Alresford Youth Association for which we are grateful. Subject to the contractors being on schedule, the playground will be officially opened by Alresford children on Thursday 21 July, at 2pm in time for the summer school holidays. Keep an eye on the New Alresford Town Council website and Facebook page for updates.

Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

On Saturday 4th June, many Alresford residents joined friends and family to enjoy the sunshine at the Picnic in the park organised by the “Coordinating Alresford” – Town Council, Rotary, The PIGS, New Leaf, Chamber of Commerce and Churches

Together to celebrate the Jubilee. Activities included best dressed wheelbarrow, photo and best crown competitions, music, refreshments, and entertainment were enjoyed by all. Hardy fans stayed to dance the night away watching the concert from Buckingham Palace with Diana Ross and others on the big screen. A big thank you to all those that assisted with the event and helped to make it an enjoyable day out. Also, to all the Alresford knitters and the Sip and Stich group who together knitted the four Union Jack flags that were on display at the event

Antisocial Behaviour Unfortunately, our parks are suffering from antisocial behaviour, many complaints received regarding loud foul

language, broken glass on the grass and in the football stands at Arlebury Park, loud music, litter and drug use, sadly we have lost another tree that was pulled out of the ground. The matter has been reported to the police and the Winchester Rural Team visit regularly. If you witness any antisocial behaviour, please report to the police immediately.

Winchester Councillors Report

Planning Enforcement If there is one aspect of planning that causes raised hackles it must surely be enforcement. The planning law on enforcement is extensive, so this has to be a brief gallop through the complexities. Enforcement happens when either a development has taken place with no permission, or one of the conditions attached to permission has been breached. Breaches of Planning Law can be either ‘operational development’ (some sort of building work) or a change of use of a portion of land. This is not intended to be a list of excuses for the failings of enforcement, but rather to explain the complexities of the enforcement process and the limits within which the WCC team works. There is a great deal of information on the Council Website, including links on reporting a breach of planning.

Margot Power

applications invariable irritate planning committees as much or more so than the general public. There is a feeling that people are ‘getting away with it’ Such applications are perfectly legal and have to be judged in exactly the same manner as any other. In some cases it is necessary for building projects to be amended once the final design and even construction have started, to adapt the example to unknown site conditions. Retrospective applications allow for corrections instead of having to re-start the process. Retrospective applications also allow for inadvertent but quite innocent breaches to be corrected. The last Planning white paper proposed to remove this sort of application, but this was dropped for lack of workable alternatives.

Gypsy and Traveller Sites Another contender for extreme irritation must be Gypsy and Traveller Sites. The lack of sites, both permanent and transit, has to be taken into account in planning decisions. The Local Plan has to provide for a suitable number of pitches, by no means an easy task.

Resources Local Authorities work under tight financial restrictions, a situation that is not going to improve for some years. Last year several new permanent Multiple Agencies members were recruited to the enforcement team, On some problem sites, several agencies may be and they were in a position to work more efficiently involved such as the HCC, the Environment Agency and make inroads into the backlog of cases. Anybody and the Police. This makes sorting the problem very Russell Gordon -Smith who has been involved with a court case knows the considerably more complicated. huge costs, delays and uncertainties involved. Going to court is a last resort, with negotiation a more pragmatic solution. Injunctions Although injunctions are suggested as a panacea for various planning Permitted Development Rights ills, courts require strict standards of proof. These are very much a last Planning permission is not required for some developments and resort. changes of use. The law on ‘use classes’ have been modified. Some uses do not require planning permission. The situation is not easy to negotiate through.

Time Limits There is a time limit for breaches, after which enforcement lapses: Generally, 10 years, but 4 years in the case of single dwellings. An exception to this is deliberate concealment. Enforcement Notice Once an enforcement notice has been served, possible with a stop notice attached, the applicant has various options, to comply with a planning condition or negotiate a change or apply for planning permission. They can of course go to appeal and put the matter before the HM Inspectorate HMI). This is a frequent outcome, for planning refusals as well as breaches. Appeal Process There are currently considerable delays for the HMI to deal with planning cases. Delays of 18 months are not uncommon. Needless to say, full use is made of these delays by some applicants. Retrospective applications Retrospective applications for developments or changes of use submitted after the event are extremely irritating to all. Such

Working within the Law Needless to say, WCC has to work strictly within the law. There is no doubt that some have a more relaxed approach and not a few know how to play the system, string out the process and make it as complex and as slow as possible. Enforcement Priorities Clearly, not all breaches of planning law are equally seriously, hence they are dived into three priorities. Priority 1: a site visit should take place within 1 working day. Typical cases include work on TPO trees, listed buildings and ancient monuments. Etc. Priority 2: a site visit within 10 working days. Typical cases commencing work with discharge on conditions, actions likely to cause planning harm. Priority 3: site visit within 15 working days. Cases might include satellite dishes, outbuildings, walls and fences. See the WCC website for an extended list.

Beautiful New Moth Species for South Downs National Park A rare and beautiful species of moth appears to have colonised the South Downs for the first time. The day-flying Lace Border moth is thought to have flown across the Channel from the continent and found suitable locations for breeding and feeding at sites in the South Downs National Park near Eastbourne.

but the moth has never previously become established. The Lace Border is found on the North Downs in Kent and Surrey and at sites in Norfolk and Gloucestershire, but this recent colonisation represents a new species for Sussex and for the South Downs National Park.

Butterfly expert Bob Eade was the first to spot the white moth in 2020 and has now been able to confirm the moth has survived another winter and is present on the site.

Tim Squire, a Ranger for the Eastern Downs of the National Park, said: “The South Downs has always been a national haven for butterflies and moths and this discovery adds another species to a very long list. The Lace Border moth is a real beauty and it’s amazing to see it in the south of England. Climate change may well be one of the factors here, so it’s also a sober reminder that research and regular wildlife monitoring are absolutely vital to help manage our fragile habitats.”

Bob, who has enjoyed visiting the site for decades, says: “While out taking photographs I spotted a small, white moth land nearby. Straight away I could see it was a moth I had never seen before, but at the time I didn't know what it was. I only managed one quick photograph before it flew and landed in the middle of some very dense scrub. When I got home, I checked the books against the photo, and it was clear it was a Lace Border. The next day I returned and saw three. This year I have seen more than 30 in this same area.” Dr Paul Tinsley-Marshall, Regional Conservation Manager for Butterfly Conservation, said: “Since 1976 only four Lace Border moths had been seen in Sussex, so Bob’s discovery and subsequent counts suggest it has successfully established a colony on the South Downs.” The moth was discovered on Frog Firle Farm, which is owned and managed by The National Trust. National Trust Lead Ranger Dan Fagan says, “The National Trust brought Frog Firle Farm into its care in 1991 and since then we have been working alongside our farm tenant to restore the internationally rare chalk grassland, for which the site is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. So, it’s fantastic to see chalk grassland species like the Lace Border moth colonising the site and we hope that a good population will become established and flourish in the years to come, as we continue our habitat restoration work”. It is thought that climate change might be a factor in this recent colonisation. The moth’s foodplants of Marjoram and Thyme have been common and widespread across the Downs for many years

52

Dr Paul Tinsley-Marshall of Butterfly Conservation added: “We encourage people to look out for this distinctive and beautiful white moth. If this colonisation is a response to climate change, it might have also colonised other sites in the National Park. By gathering more data, we can better assess these impacts and the changing fortunes of our wildlife.” A small colony has also been found at Friston Gallops, managed by Forestry England. Daniel Cooper, Assistant Ecologist at Forestry England, commented on the project at the site: “The project aims to boost the wildflower population through a new sward management scheme, including low-intensity grazing, hay cutting, and wildflower seeding targeted at maintaining high-quality chalk grassland habitat. This management will benefit the recently colonised Lace Border moth which has been found on the site in the last two years thanks to monitoring by volunteers from Seaford Natural History Society and Forestry England.” The successful conservation projects on the Friston Gallops site have also resulted in 36 species of butterfly being recorded there. This positive news follows the publication of the new Red List of British butterflies, a report from Butterfly Conservation published on 26th May 2022 that revealed half of all UK butterflies are endangered or near endangered. The full report can be viewed here.

New Exhibition And Book Reveals Life Behind The Walls Of Winchester Prison Doing Time launches in Hampshire this Summer. Doing Time - a thoughtprovoking exhibition supported by Hampshire Cultural Trust sharing the stories of the people who live and work at Winchester Prison launches this summer, touring libraries and civic venues across the county. The exhibition and an accompanying book tell the story of 175 years of Winchester Prison history, the harsh prison regimes of the past and today’s focus on education, training and reform. Prison life is revealed in a series of interviews with staff including Governor James Bourke who shares the challenges of supporting prisoners with complex social, mental and physical needs. The impact of what often can be life-changing education and training, healthcare and counselling is told in the words of prisoners who have turned their lives around at HMP Winchester. The book and exhibition were written by Winchester Magazine editor Liz Kavanagh who spent over six months visiting the prison before, after and during the pandemic when prisoners were almost permanently locked in cells. The exhibition was curated by Leonie Mountney. Photography by award-winning Winchester photographer Javaid Akhtar features throughout, revealing the stark reality of prison life. Liz Kavanagh comments: “Each year, 2000 men pass through Winchester Prison,

56

on remand, awaiting release and serving sentences. “The book and exhibition provide an overview of the many individuals who make up the prison – from teachers and prison officers to the prisoners themselves. Their stories have been written as they have been told - without agenda. “They reveal the huge challenges that the prison faces operationally as well as the dedication of the people who work there. They also highlight the pitfalls of a criminal justice system where reoffending is far too common. The stories told by prisoners are particularly insightful, revealing how debt, drug addiction and lack of family support can all lead to crime.” Deborah Neubauer, Director of Community and Impact at Hampshire Cultural Trust says: “The exhibition and book have provided real insight into what life is like behind the walls in one of Winchester’s most prominent landmarks. The stories that have been shared are both challenging and inspirational.” Doing Time will be at the following venues: Westbury Manor Museum, Fareham (25/6 to 24/7) - Red House Museum, Christchurch (10/9 to 16/10) - Winchester Law Courts, Winchester (10/9) - The Great Hall, Winchester (17/9) - Willis Museum, Basingstoke (12/11 - 17/12) - Allen Gallery, Alton (21/1/23 - 26/2/23) The book Doing Time is available for £7.99 from P&G Wells. www.pgwells.co.uk Organisations interested in booking the exhibition with an accompanying talk (if required) should contact Leonie Mountney at leoniemountney@btinternet.com For further information and media enquiries please contact Liz Kavanagh liz@winchestermag.com 01962 881422

Can you imagine being lucky enough to spend every day on a 1 km stretch of the River Itchen to study the flora and fauna? George Mann was fortunate enough to do so in 2008 at Martyr Worthy and has just published a limited, 368-page, colour, hardback edition: A Year on the River Itchen at Martyr Worthy ~ A day-by-day account in words and pictures. Birds, plants, insects, fish, snails, animals, landscapes and water temperatures, plus the last remaining artefacts relating to the old water meadows were recorded, sometimes at 5am in the morning or into the fading light, whatever the conditions, for 366 days. Monthly galleries of 450+ photographs illustrate the daily, hour-by-hour notes, expressed in the present tense with the freshness of being ‘in the moment’. It also provided an opportunity to display a gallery of Marilyn Bechely’s wonderful wildlife drawings. Photography hints and tips are included, plus some reflections regarding the study and the lessons learned. Crossreferences show the occurrence, frequency and activity of species throughout the year. The diary was the basis for and is a companion volume to, The River Itchen at Martyr Worthy ~ Wildlife and Riverkeeping Observed published in 2019 and supplements the 1500+ photographs presented in that edition. It provides a more detailed insight into the extent of the study.. More importantly, it helps to think more deeply about the flora and fauna than a single photograph, or passing glimpse, can provide. It is a question of observing as opposed to looking. Find further information at: www. riveritchen.co.uk. Dear All, I wanted to share a few things that might help with wealth management. Wealth Management Keep your costs down. Some wealth managers will have very high charges for investments and not deliver appropriate performance. Since investment growth is not guaranteed and fund performance is variable, it makes sense to keep the charges low as these are the only things that we have any control over. Investment charges should not exceed 1% pa for some of the best funds available. Remember inflation will erode the value of your savings and if you are paying high charges, the problem of inflation is compounded with any charges. Inheritance Tax (IHT) IHT threshold is £325,000 each. An additional main residence threshold of £175,000 each also applies (this benefit is totally lost if your entire estate is worth more than £2m effectively costing a married couple’s estate £100,000). This means a married couple have an IHT allowance of £1m (unless your estate is worth more than £2m). Everything above this is taxed at 40% Simple planning around IHT could make huge financial benefits.

Mr Mac - Support for Apple & Windows Apple’s newly announced OS 16 operating system for iPhones has many new features and will be available in the autumn, usually at the same time as this year’s new iPhone, the 14, is announced. It is compatible with many of the phones able to run the current IOS 15, but it is will not be available for some older devices including the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus, the iPod touch, and the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. FYI, the first iPhone 6 was released in 2014 and the iPhone 7 in 2016. These phones will continue to function normally, they will not benefit from any of the new features available in IOS 16.

It is not just Apple; WhatsApp have just announced that older iPhones, specifically the iPhone 5, will no longer work with their software programme as these models will not be able to update their operating software to IOS 12 or any later version. The iPhone 5 is quite an old phone now having been introduced back in 2012. Handy Tip. Taking a screenshot on an iPad can be fiddly. It is such a useful feature to be able to share the picture with other people. It is automatically saved into your Photos library and here you can send the whole screenshot or edit it and just send the part you want to share. To make it much easier to do go to Settings > Accessibility then tap on Touch > turn on AssitiveTouch > here you will see a section CUSTOM ACTIONS, the first option is SingleTap > in the list you will see Screenshot, touch this and a small rectangle appears that stays on your screen. Now, when you touch this, it takes a screenshot.

Plastic Free July By Plastric Free Foundation

What you can do

even supermarkets have sections with freshly baked goods that are yet to be packaged. By heading along with your own reusable bread bag or containers, you can easily avoid single-use plastic packaging.

Want some tips to find out how you can reduce plastic waste? The good news is, that anyone can get involved. You can start small, or challenge yourself! Get inspired using the menu options below.

Takeaway Coffee Cups

You can easily avoid takeaway coffee cups by bringing along your own reusable alternative. There are many reusable coffee cups available on the market. Keep it in your bag or on your desk at work; wherever you’ll remember to use it. Many people choose socially and environmentally-friendly reusables made of ceramic, glass, plastic or stainless steel. You don’t even need to purchase a special cup. You can bring a mug or jar from home – just be conscious of using items that can heat up or don’t travel well if you’re going far. If you forget your reusable alternative and don’t have time to dine-in, consider going without. It might not be easy, but will probably mean you never forget again!

Pre-packed fruit and vegetables

Buying plasticwrapped or packaged fruits and vegetables can be convenient, but unfortunately, it creates plastic waste. Instead, look out for loose fruit and vegetables in your local grocery store, or head to a farmers' market or organic store where plastic packaging is less often used.

Choose lightweight, reusable produce bags instead of the plastic bags that are usually provided. Be sure to look for ones made from recycled plastic or repurposed netting fabric. It’s also worth asking if you really need a plastic bag. For example, if you’re buying a bunch of bananas, why not just keep them loose in your shopping basket

60

If you forget to bring your own, you can also ask for a paper bag (which you can recycle later on if clean, or compost or shred and feed to the worm farm). or trolley and transport them home in your reusable shopping bag?

Plastic Bottles

Avoiding buying single-use plastic water bottles is as simple as carrying your own reusable alternative with you. Be sure to choose a socially-responsible and environmentally-friendly alternative, such as a reusable bottle made from stainless steel, glass, or safe aluminium. If you do forget to bring your water bottle along with you, don’t panic. You can find a fountain, ask a cafe for a glass of water, or purchase a glass bottle of water and reuse it.

Meat, Fish & Deli

Choose to refuse pre-packaged meat, fish and deli products, particularly those sold on polystyrene trays. It’s worth shopping around for a local butcher, fishmonger or deli-counter that sell unpackaged items. Just remember to bring your own reusable container along when you go shopping.

At the Bakery

Most local bakeries, farmers' markets and

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce what you buy. Before you make a purchase, ask yourself if you truly need it, or if you can repurpose other items that you already have. Shopping for secondhand clothing and products helps contribute to less waste. Avoid products that are wrapped in plastic, and seek more sustainable alternatives.

Reusable Bags

Reusable shopping bags are a fantastic alternative to singleuse plastic bags. It’s a great idea to keep a stash of your reusable bags somewhere where you’ll remember them; like in the boot of your car or by your front door. You can also get into the habit of writing a reminder to yourself at the start of each grocery shopping list. Reusable bags go beyond just grocery shopping – bring them along for all shopping trips! There are even purse/pocket sized reusable bags that you can keep on hand for emergencies. For more information and ideas on how to reduce your plastic waste visit: www.plasticfreejuly.org/

Free Physics Festival for Science teachers

Winchester College’s Physics Department has worked with the Hampshire Physics CPD Partnership this year to deliver a series of informative practical workshops for specialist and non-specialist physics teachers. Each half term, teachers Jeremy Douglas and Jamie Barron have provided hands-on experience to teachers from across the region to develop their confidence in teaching physics at Key Stages 3 and 4. Sessions on electromagnetism, electricity, waves and energy have been delivered by our specialist physics dons with the aim of addressing misconceptions and demonstrating engaging practical activities. After many years of working with Physics Partners, the relationship is going from strength to strength and has also brought together UTC Portsmouth and STEM Academy South to deliver a programme of events. This year, the annual Festival of Physics will be taking place at Winchester College on Saturday 9 July with a diverse programme of workshops, a keynote plenary from Dr David Price from Diamond Light Source, as well as a chance to meet our exhibitors and network with physics teachers and technicians from across the region. The festival is free and open to all teachers and technicians delivering physics in schools. The 20th Hampshire Food Festival Come and join in the fun of the Hampshire Food Festival, returning this summer. Now in its 20th year, the award-winning Hampshire Food Festival is a glorious celebration of the region's food and drink with a programme of events throughout July. This is the biggest Food Festival in the country: encompassing BBQ, markets, pop-ups, shows, tastings, trails and tours across the county from 1st-31st July. Hampshire Fare established the very first Hampshire Food Festival back in 2000 and it quickly achieved a scale not seen elsewhere. When most food festivals were based around a market format and held for one day, Hampshire’s ran for a fortnight and included walks, talks, tours, tastings and cookery demos. By 2008 it had evolved into a month of activities, encouraging locals and visitors to explore Hampshire’s countryside, villages and market towns and discover its abundance of food and drink. “In this year’s festival events programme MasterChef winner and Hampshire, local Jane Devonshire writes: “The message to try local is a message which truly resonates at the moment. Choosing local supports your neighbours, considers the environment and strengthens the local economy. Just as important, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s produce is among the very best on offer across the country and, indeed, the world." This popular Festival continues to feature a wide variety of tasty events. Highlights from this year’s programme include old favourites, among them farm tours and cheese suppers at Lyburn Farm in the New Forest; Fizz Fest, at Black Chalk vineyard in the Test Valley; and the local produce market and chefs’ kitchen at the New Forest Show. Exciting new experiences are

also lined up, among them: a Gin and Beer Fest at the Gin Palace in Andover; Cocktails and Canapés with MasterChef winner Jane Devonshire at Gorilla Spirits in Upton Grey; gin tasting at Kimbridge Barn in the Test Valley; Pothecary Gin pop-up at Montagu Arms in Beaulieu; and Raimes Sparkling Wine Summer Courtyard in Tichborne. There are also BBQ Masterclasses with SoCal in Southampton, baking workshops with South Downs Sourdough in Cheriton, and a Food Fare at Westlands Farm Shop near Wickham. Special dining experiences will be popping up at Hampshire Deli in Wolverton, Balmer Lawn in Brockenhurst, and The Lighthouse in Milford, plus a Coates & Seely special event at The White Horse, Otterbourne, Winchester. Tracy Nash comments: “Hampshire Food Festival celebrates one of the great pleasures in life: food and drinks with a relaxed carnival atmosphere and opportunities to discover new tastes and experiences. The Festival continues to provide what it set out to achieve when it was set up in 2000: a great opportunity for independents to raise their profile and a unique way for everyone to enjoy and appreciate Hampshire’s heritage, culture, and sense of place. We are inviting everyone to join the celebration, and how welcome that will be after the past two years.” Free copies of the Hampshire Food Festival events programme will be available from various farm shops, village stores, pubs, restaurants and hotels, events and markets. The events will also be listed on the Hampshire Fare own events page. A digital version of the Hampshire Food Festival events programme can be read online.
