The East Stratton Fete & Dog Show

This quintessential village fete will be held on the village green opposite the Northbrook Arms PH in East Stratton, described as one of the best preserved estate villages in the south of England and set in a conservation area just off the A33 about 5 miles north of Winchester (SO21 3DX). It offers genuine family entertainment for all ages with a wide range of stalls and sideshows, a barbecue and Pimms bar, a children’s entertainer, tractor & trailer rides, a jazz band and a fun dog show as well as a grand draw with numerous exciting prizes. Winchester Cheese & Chilli Festival 2022 - 18th & 19th June

The Cheese and Chilli Festival is the only show in the UK which celebrates both Cheese and Chilli within a festival setting. The Cheese and Chilli Festival is now held at FOUR locations throughout the south of England: Christchurch, Winchester, Swindon and Guildford. We are delighted to announce that the amazing Cheese and Chilli Festival is returning to Winchester for for the 7th time in 2022, once again we will be at the North Walls Recreation Ground (behind the River Park Leisure Centre). It’s quite a sight to see grown adults struggle to eat tiny fruits and hilarious to see the consequences! • Crazy Golf - Another FREE activity, why not test yourself against our very own Cheese & Chilli Crazy Golf Course. New Alresford Town Trust The New Alresford Town Trust organised a bumper Monday Bank Holiday for the visitors and residents of Alresford. Jackie Edwards organised the Brocante Market for its 4th year. There was a great attendance, and in addition there were open days at the Eel house,Museum and Norman Bridge. Jackie said "Alresford welcomed the first of 2 Brocante Markets this year on Sunday,2nd May with a huge turnout making the day a vibrant enjoyable day for the public,enthusiast and traders. Broad St took on a "French feel"with an eclectic mix of items with the public browsed and purchased between brunch, lunch and afternoon tea in the many Alresford cafes ,bars and restaurants. If you missed this market then come to our next Brocante market on Sunday,25th September" Robin Atkins reported that 770 visitors visited the 3 open day sites and donated over £270 plus gift aid of £68 making £338 for the Trust split between the Eel House fund and the Museum. It was a busy day for all volunteers!! Alresford Pigs Association - Local People Helping Local People It’s been a busy month for the Pigs. We’ve helped Ukrainian visitors with funds for Bus Passes, we’ve funded events and items for local schools and people, and we’ve stood in the rain directing traffic for happy Watercress Festival visitors and some (a very few) less happy locals! There’s much more coming and we look forward to Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this month and to be involved in local events, such as the Alresford Show. (Yes, it’s happening!) Please remember if you need help, don’t be afraid to ask, we’ll consider all requests – from financial to physical help – and even provided a friendly ear and chat when needed. Mobility issues still provide many of our requests for help. Councillor Fiona Isaacs On-Street parking

Hampshire County Council has confirmed to The Alresford Chamber of Commerce and myself, that a consultation will take place before decisions are made. The Chamber has been actively engaged in feeding back their survey results from residents and businesses after Winchester City Council (WCC) suggested parking meters in Alresford. Businesses recognise that things may have to change to get parking enforcement in the town as WCC is not investing in this. The lack of enforcement has been frustrating for many residents and businesses. I have always opposed parking meters and it is not an easy situation with car parks managed by WCC and on-street by Hampshire County Council. Enforcement obviously needs to be funded and a balance needs to be carefully managed.

Safety concerns raised by residents

Last year there were official complaints made by residents who could not get out of their homes with wheelchairs due to long grass. This issue was raised again as cuts were missed in March and April in some areas. As a result, I have made sure that this is temporarily addressed until proper action could be taken. I have called for a meeting of lead officers from Winchester City Council to discuss things and show them the issues in Alresford. I have asked our New Alresford Town Council Chair to attend. I will update the outcome in my next report. I am pleased to announce that there has been some cutting taking place in these missed areas. We are currently scheduled for 9 monthly cuts. There are also a few project areas where there will be sightline cuts at the very least. At the moment neither has been done and this is why I have spent over a month trying to resolve things.

Ukrainian Assistance - Update

• I have written many letters to key Directors and others from Stagecoach Buses over the last few months asking about offering 6 month free travel to these residents. Many buses in our more rural areas have empty seats, so to offer them free is not costing Stagecoach any more. I would like to thank Estelle and James Bentham and others in our ward who have worked so hard on this negotation. • I was the only WCC councillor to attend the first Ukrainian 'refugee guest and host meeting' in Winchester. I spent a lot of time ensuring that there were pathways to employment and communication of vacancies within our local groups. Linking in the Alresford Chamber of Commerce, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and other business groups. (eg Winchester BID) We have managed to successfully find employment for most.

Alresford Rotary

The River Arle

As one of about 200 chalk streams worldwide the River Arle is precious, much loved by the local community and home to the native white-clawed crayfish, an endangered species now only found in a few strongholds. Just upstream of the Eel House, the footpath had fallen into disrepair and was becoming difficult to use even with regular repairs. Happily, a more permanent solution has been implemented through Watercress and Winterbourne's, a Landscape Partnership Scheme funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Washed away

The causes for the footpath's decline were numerous and interlinked. High footfall caused the surface to wear down and prevented the growth of vegetation that would normally secure the soil. The plants that did appear up were stunted by the heavy shade cast by nearby trees and the bank side of the path was further scoured by the stream whenever the water level was high. These factors combined to cause gradual but significant bank erosion, especially noticeable on the footpath, which developed narrow sections and large dips that were often filled with rain, making the route increasingly tricky to navigate, and in parts inaccessible for those with low mobility. But there was another, less visible, casualty, the health of the adjacent chalk stream. As the bank and path crumbled, sediment was being released into the water, settling on the gravelly bed, preventing fish from breeding and leaving invertebrates without a home. As the sediment built up the stream grew shallower, making it sluggish, warm, and more likely to overflow. Vegetation dwindled, compounding

the erosion and reducing the available shelter for water voles.

Shoring up

With the Wessex Rivers Trust, the Watercress and Winterbourne's Landscape Partnership Scheme began tackling these issues in October 2021, resurfacing the footpath and widening it to allow pushchairs to pass. Replacement bank supports were added and reinforced by buffers of woody debris. A silt curtain newly purchased to avoid exposing the white-clawed crayfish to any contamination, kept the stream clear during the disturbance. These improvements will be invaluable in securing the bank, but its long-term stability depends on the return of sufficient vegetation. Plant growth will lock the soil in place and shield it from the flowing water, in addition to providing important wildlife habitat, to encourage this, the Wessex Rivers Trust thinned the trees to let in more sunlight and added native plants to bolster the natural regrowth. As vegetation is vulnerable to trampling, particularly whilst becoming established, the bank is now protected by a low fence with an access area where dogs can enjoy a dip. In November, brilliant volunteers returned to 'hinge' trees into the channel: partially cut through, the trees still grow but can be laid down to form 'pinch points' that hasten the flow and help sweep excess sediment away.

Moving forward

This spring signs of success appeared. The bank is growing greener as new plants populate the area, the gravelly bed near the pinch points is largely free from sediment and the footpath once again offers an

enjoyable walking route. The full impact will take time to show and the Watercress and Winterbourne's Landscape Partnership Scheme looks forward to assisting the community with their ongoing care of the stream. The repairs to and the enhancement of the river and its bank are in memory of local residents Mike and Bridget Newitt, whose generous legacy to Alresford Rotary enabled the works carried out to be significantly more extensive than would have been possible otherwise. Mike and Bridget’s generosity, and its legacy, have been commemorated by an information board next to the Eel House. They wished Alresford Rotary to use their

legacy for the benefit of the local community and it has also enabled Alresford Rotary to donate toward the imminent refurbishment of the Stratton Bates playground.

The Advisory Group held its first meeting on 16 May and the results of the Engagement Day and questionnaires are currently being collated and reviewed. Floral Displays for the Town

160 floral displays have been installed in the town centre on many properties and will soon be looking splendid. As this is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year, we felt it was fitting that the displays are red, white, and blue flowers. The theme was continued by Anita Wade who planted the three town entry flower beds. A huge thank-you for her continued enthusiasm.

Litter

NATC employs a very loyal litter picker who covers all the Recreation Grounds, centre of town, main arterial routes and one-off incidents most days of the week. Especially worrying has been continued incidents of broken glass on the football pitches and public footpaths at Arlebury Park and Stratton Bates Recreation Ground. Families of small children and dog walkers use our parks daily. Please help the litter picker to keep your town clean and tidy by using one of the many litter bins or simply take litter home with you. Fly tipping should be reported to Winchester council but if you witness a fly -tip please report this to the Police 101 number.

Vodafone mast to be erected at Arlebury Park Case 22/00483/ TCP A planning application has been approved by Winchester Council under permitted

development, for the installation of a replacement base station consisting of a 20 metre monopole supporting six antenna, two 600mm dishes, three cabinets and ancillary development. It is not known what date the works will commence, however when complete this will improve the signal strength and connectivity in the area.

A new committee ‘Community and Open Spaces’ has been formed by merging the former Community & Tourism and Recreation & Environment committees, the Chair is Cllr Sarah Jane Cavell. Chair of Planning committee is Cllr Ann Bean and Chair of Operations & Resources committee is Cllr Simon Evans.

Very sadly two resident swans, ducks and pigeons have recently been killed on the river path by air rifles. This is an unlawful offence in a public place. If you see any untoward activity of this nature, please report to the police immediately.

Maple Cottage opened after a 2 yr break, in 2021. After a huge success Photo Credit Marienne Majrerus then, we are pleased to be opening again. It is a ½ acre cottage style garden with herbaceous borders, veg plots and a tiny, but very active wildlife pond surrounded by hostas, astilbe, sarracenia and a quirky tree cave for kids. The neighbouring 1 acre contemporary garden at Cherry Tree Barn is just 3 yrs old and is the realisation of the owner’s ideas working with garden designer Fiona Harrison. The area around the thatched barn has been planted with grasses, iris, salvia, euphorbia, phlomis and knautia. Drifts of oxeye daisies and other wildflowers on bunds line the perimeter. Hard landscaping incl terracing, decking, pathways and Japanese influenced Yatsuhashi Bridge through the main border. Small collection of sculptures completes the piece.

In 1971 a group of ladies met to discuss the formation of a Flower Club. Initially, the Club met on a Friday in the Community Centre. This changed to the 4th Wednesday. More recently, we have met in St John's Hall, the Methodist Hall, and are now in St Gregory's Church Hall. Our first birthday party was in Lawrence Oxley's shop (where our secretary worked), and our President was Princess George Galitzine, who regularly attended our Christmas Fayre. We always had a Father Christmas, a bran tub and cake, decoration and gift stalls. We ran Jumble Sales to raise funds for special demonstrators. Other events included Fashion Shows - our secretary provided the clothes, with members as the models! We had monthly competitions judged by the demonstrator. There were cups (beginners, intermediate and advanced) and even one for husbands to win! This was abandoned as entries decreased due to rising costs. Members have supported the Alresford Show every year, gaining many awards. We have taken part in festivals in Winchester, Portsmouth and Salisbury Cathedrals, Westminster, Farnborough and Romsey Abbeys, North Foreland Lodge School, Wilton House, Jermyn’s House, Avington Park and Gilbert White's at Selborne. We were also responsible for festivals on our own - Old Alresford Place, St John's, St Gregory's, Methodist Church, Bishops Sutton, Preston Candover, Ropley, Northington, Ovington, Winchester Guildhall, Theatre Royal and the Literary Festival. We recently held a belated Anniversary Lunch at the Bell Hotel, complete with a cake! A friendly club with an excellent programme of demonstrations and lectures, we are pleased to welcome new members on last Wednesday of each month at St Gregory’s Church Hall – enquiries 01962 735321

Tunworth Cheese twice baked souffle

It's so good to see a growing number of local food producers making names for themselves. Stacey Hedges at The Hampshire Cheese Company makes Winslade and Tunworth, two delicious artisanal cheeses which can now be bought at several branches of the Co-op around Hampshire as well as Waitrose and independent delis and grocery stores. And further afield as far away as Singapore! Her present creamery will soon be replaced with a new and bigger one to meet the growing demand. Try my amazing double baked souffle recipe using Tunworth. It is easier than you might think and can be made a day or two ahead, ready to finish off in a hot oven, brown and bubbling, and it will be a showstopper I promise! My recipe serves 6 starter size.

Ingredients for Souffle

Butter the ramekins and sprinkle the inside with grated parmesan Fill a baking dish with hot water in the oven at 180 degrees. This is known as a Bain Marie which will help even cooking. Melt the butter gently and stir in the cornflour to form a roux. Gradually add the the milk and cream mixture until the sauce thickens slightly. Add the Tunworth to the mixture and stir over a gentle heat. The sauce should be smooth. Set aside to cool slightly. Separate the eggs and beat the egg yolks. Stir the yolks into the mixture. If it looks as though it is separating at this stage, don’t worry keep going! Whisk the egg whites to soft peaks and fold into the mixture. Season to taste. Gently fill the ramekins to the top and bake for twenty minutes until brown and risen. Allow to cool and turn onto a try. The souffles at this stage can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days or frozen.

Method for the first bake

Turn each souffle upside down into an ovenproof dish with the brown top at the bottom. Pour enough double cream to come about half way up the sides. Sprinkle grated parmesan onto the top and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 mins until the sauce bubbles and the souffle is nicely glazed. Serve with a green salad and crusty bread.

Goodbye from Dr. Lowman Where have the last thirty years gone? I rem ember starting work at Alresford Su rgery in 1992, when Ge neral Practice was very different, inc luding writing in patie nt notes using fountain pen, doing nights on-call carryi ng a bag full of equipment and medic ations, and relying on paper maps and torches to find rural addresses. A fond me mory is holding weekly branch surge ries in Preston Cand over Village Hall, using the nearby phon e box to enquire abou t home visits to be done afterwards. Ho spital referrals were sim ple, and I had easy access to Consult ant colleagues, meeti ng them once a week over lunch for an educational sessio n. From antenatal to end-of-life care, and everything in between , we were involved in it all. How things have chan ged. I am now part of a large multidisciplinary team wi th greater specialisat ion, and technology has allowed me to co nsult by text, email, an d video, even working from home when necessary. There is a “template” for everything, electr onic inboxes and me ssaging systems, and various pathway s to enable hospital ref errals. Medicine is more complex and treatment possibilitie s almost endless. Education and meeti ngs are done via “Team s” sitting at my computer, and lunch is noticeable only by its absence! Yet, much has remain ed the same. Concern , anxiety and fear around ill health is a normal human ch aracteristic that can affect us all. Illness continues to pre sent in many different ways, challen ging clinicians daily as we try to make a diagnosis. Some of my patients have been from the same families for three decad es, though in recent yea rs from the third or even fourth generation! Over the years we have shared many stories together, and I have had the privilege of being there through both good and difficu lt times. It is the continuity of the se relationships that has made my role as a GP such an enjoyable one and I am grateful for this. Alongside this, I have had the privilege of working within a team who are kind, compassionate , and committed to providing the best care possible, having to respond to a continually changing NHS. Winchester District Citizens Advice Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District gives advice on what to do if you think you’ve been treated unfairly when applying for a job. I recently applied for a job at a local pub which offered National Minimum Wage. I had an interview and at the end the manager asked how old I was. After telling her I was 25 she told me she would be in touch, but it would be unlikely I’d get the job because they wouldn’t be able to afford to pay me the required wage. She said she’d prefer to hire someone younger. Is this legal? Nobody should be asking you how old you are in a job interview. Being 25, you’re entitled to the National Living Wage. On the Citizens Advice website there are full

details of the wages people are entitled to by law. But these rules shouldn’t mean employers avoid hiring people because of how old they are. That’s known as ‘direct age discrimination’ in the Equality Act 2010. You’re also protected by the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, which says employers can’t not hire you (and they can’t fire you) because your age means you’re entitled to a higher rate. We have a lot of information on our website about what to do if you’re being treated unfairly when applying for a job. If you’ve been discriminated against, there are steps you can take to either get compensation or convince the person to give you a job. Make a note of what happened as soon as you can - noting down exactly what you were asked and any other remarks the interviewer made. This will be useful as evidence later. Next, you should write a letter of complaint to the employer. Keep a copy of this letter for your own records. There’s advice on the Citizens Advice website on what this letter should include and you can also speak to an adviser at your Halloween events in Alresford or from walking with the much loved family dog, Digby. Until about 10.15am the Avenue (from Arlebury Park), Pound Hill, West Street, Broad Street and the Great Weir will be closed and “out in the country” Abbotstone Road and Drove Lane will be closed until about 11.30am to ensure the course is safe.

urprised to find herself flat on her back, she looked sideways. Inches from her face, her terrier was sporting a similarly stunned expression in her fur trimmed, smoky eyes.

The weeny Houdini once even disappeared from the rigorously ‘dog proofed’ garden for a whole day, returning triumphant and unrepentant with a cargo of a thousand ticks. Her mistress picked up her wriggling furry body and kissed her; so relieved she was back, and the dog so pleased to be back, that noone could be cross.

They’d been walking parallel to the river. Marshy, thickly populated with brambles and rotting fallen trees covered in moss. Scrambling over slippery logs and side-stepping thorny trip wires required stamina, agility and close quarter concentration. So when the deer rose out of the ground where it had lain hidden and camouflaged in the brown, decaying detritus, she’d been unprepared. In its flight it struck her full in the chest, leapt gracefully over her dog and fled the scene, leaving her prone. The terrier was in disbelief; the nerve of that funny looking dog with the pointy feet and sticks on its head! Years before, resting literally in the palm of her hand, she’d been the tiniest puppy when she was that best-of-all birthday present. Himself had bought a chicken coop and told her to look in the Land Rover for another gift. Expecting a chicken – well, you would, wouldn’t you – she was surprised to find a little scrap of excited, yapping fur. ‘Chicken’ didn’t quite cut it as a name, so they chose something fittingly cute and chirpy for the tiny creature. And she was extremely cute and terribly chirpy, but she was also a terrier… A Border-cross at that. With a bit of a volatile nature, she was often referred to as the ‘cross Border’. To be fair, her wayward traits presented themselves early on and they should have been prepared from the get go. Her very first walk was going so well. Proud owner, tiny puppy, lots of compliments and charm. Until tiny puppy scented something more interesting in the form of two large dogs on the other side of the park, that is. She homed in on them. My, she was fast – like a blunt and furry missile. Her proud owner, not so much. She scooped up the miscreant whilst panting and wheezing like an asthmatic accordion with the effort of running and yelling at the same time. The two large dogs and owner were, thankfully, amused at the tiny terrier who’d been telling them off and making a dreadful noise, something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And at a surprising volume for one so small.

Yes, she admitted it without a shred of shame - that dog had her wrapped around her little claw. She was putty in her paws. But the terrier would lie on her sick bed all day when her mistress was ill. A personal protection squad of one, snout towards the door she was ready to repel all hostiles. And when her mistress cradled her in her arms and kissed her soft ears, smelling faintly of elderflowers, the small dog would croon and half close her eyes with pleasure.

But the cross Border was also, it has to be said, ‘a bit of a worry’.

One sunny Saturday just before Christmas, the terrier was running through a narrow thicket as they walked alongside on the grassy riverbank. Himself, hearing the drone of an insect, commented that it was very late for wasps. When they reached the end of the wood they called their dog. And called. Eventually she tottered out of the trees, collapsing at their feet. Having presumably encountered the mother lode nest, the small, furry body was crawling with wasps. Himself scooped up her limp and comatose little body. A mercy dash to the nearest vet, adrenaline shots and an oxygen tent – and the terrier was saved! Relieved tears all round. Reluctantly they left the prone and semi-conscious dog with the vets, who said she needed to overnight with them. However, they hadn’t long been home when the ‘phone rang. “Hello?” In the background, she could hear the most awful noise. Hard to describe – something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And so loud. It sounded familiar… And cross. “Hello.” Said the slightly stressed sounding voice at the other end. “Please can you come and collect your dog. We think she’s well enough to go home…” But all things come to an end and eventually she lost her constant companion, her terrier. To use the word ‘lost’ is, of course, a flimsy euphemism - it makes it sound like she wandered off. Which actually was clearly a recurring theme throughout her 16 odd years. But all too soon, the wet-nosed, furry vandal broke her heart and was gone, sauntering off and wagging her tail behind her…

Garden weed control can be challenging, let’s understand why When I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticides to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue. Weeds can be relatively small, like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed, like grasses, broad-leafed, like dandelions or woody, like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide. Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Non-selective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied to existing lawns, but will control only broad-leaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact grasses.

How weed killers work

Everything we use in your garden is safe for everything that uses your garden – bees too! Some weed killers work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth, twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die. Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing

the weed. So why don’t selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.

When to use weed killers

Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.

How to use

Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.

Is one application enough?

If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However, some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present. Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. Open Garden at Tichborne House Sunday 3rd July

Following on from last years 2 successful open days we will support The Hampshire Medical Fund with another open garden on Sunday 3 July from 1-5pm. The entrance fee will go directly to them so please join us for a wander around the garden and in turn help them to supply Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover hospitals with state of the art equipment not available on the NHS. The Tichborne family have lived on this site beside the river Itchen since the 12th century. They have a fascinating history - there’s a Catholic martyr, Chidiock Tichborne; a lost-at-sea heir, Sir Roger Tichborne, and his impersonator, Arthur Orton known as the Tichborne Claimant, whose trial gripped Victorian society. Then there’s the Tichborne Dole, the giving of flour to locals, which still continues on 25 March each year and was instigated by the charitable Lady Mabella Tichborne in the thirteenth century. The bones of the garden may be rooted in this history with a large house containing a private chapel beside a moat, ancient trees and Victorian out buildings but the essence of the garden is progressive and created almost entirely over the last 20 years. An original plan by Michele Hickman for an area around the moat has been tinkered with, extended and adapted over the years. More hedges have been planted and core structural shapes have been integrated to give the perennials and grasses a backdrop and winter interest. Seed is left to settle and the sinuous bed shapes are in direct response to the surrounding rolling hills and curvaceous boundary hedges visible from the house. There is a fully productive walled kitchen garden with cut flower beds, fruit trees and vegetables plus a rickety greenhouse. Outside this walled garden you will find an orchard and berry cage. The garden is very much a work in progress and a private family space but for a few days this year it will be open for people to visit and enjoy (hopefully) and maybe even get inspiration from for their own gardens. The entrance fee from these days will be donated to charities chosen by Catherine Loudon, whose late husband Anthony was the grandson of Sir Anthony Doughty Tichborne, and their 3 children. ‘True Colours’ – An exhibition of recent work by Christopher Cristóbal Newberry. At The Light Room Gallery in Alresford for one week from Tuesday 14th to 20th June. Christopher Cristóbal Newberry is an Anglo-Mexican artist who uses photography as a tool to create incredibly colourful, yet very structured images. He combines a Mexican sense of colour with a modern, European sense of abstraction and order. He takes a scene such as a seascape and turns it into geometric shapes. The wheels of a bicycle may become colourful. The stools at a bar may become a geometric pattern. Colours are bright, lines are straight, shapes are even. His work during the Covid lockdowns focused on residential scenes in house and garden, segmenting images into squares which are coloured and rearranged to form a large pattern. The large works are limited edition, printed on Dibond – a very light rigid material. Smaller open edition prints are available on quality photographic paper. However, his images have most impact when seen live and full size and The Light Room provides a beautiful white space, which highlights the images’ powerful colour. The Light Room is a lovely

He is co-author of a series of books on architecture and social history, including “Look Up! Winchester”. Christopher has exhibited at galleries in London, Southampton, Yorkshire, Winchester and at the National Art Museum in Romania – to name a few. Alresford Bowling Club

We are a friendly bowling club, situated in Sun Lane, close to the centre of Alresford. During the bowling season (roughly late April to September) we play many friendly matches against local clubs, have a number of internal competitions and knock-out tournaments, and regular roll-up sessions. Roll-ups are opportunities to meet, play and socialise with other members, and take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 10.00am to 12.00 noon, and Thursday evenings 6.00pm to 8.00pm (with a social element). Visitors are welcome at roll-ups, and at other times when accompanied by a Member. You can try out bowls of various sizes and can take advantage of 2 trial sessions before you decide if the game of bowls is for you. Walk to school week

I hope your family took part in Walk to School week in May. If a small change to the route could have made your journey easier, please let me know. The Bishop’s Sutton to Alresford path assessment has been made but the costs are astronomic. The A33 paths are overgrown too. Is your route used by many others? If it is well used, the path may be kept clear by feet walking along it, but report any difficulties on your route, and let me know of any ideas for future park & stride locations.

Glass recycling

Post lockdown, many of the public glass bins are reporting as full quicker than expected, even though most households have access to a Winchester Council doorstep collection. The County Council has withdrawn glass recycling at the HWRC’s, adding to this problem. A local pub owner describes public delivering wine bottles to his onsite container as the ‘walk of shame’! I have taken up the matter with city and county to ask them about capacity, but meanwhile, you may like to take this quiz from Heart Matters- it’s a simple look at Hilliers and a selection of plant stalls from nurseries across Hampshire and a variety of garden products, unique gifts and produce. The atmosphere was no less fun despite the downpour and there were plenty of hot drinks and home-made lunches on hand in the relaxed sanctuary of the Winchester Go LD Café Marquee. “The community spirit is important as people with a learning disability can feel very isolated and have fewer chances to take part in leisure or social activities. This week is Mental Health awareness week and at Winchester Go LD we work hard to ensure our members have a voice and have the opportunity to connect with staff and our incredible volunteers, both in group settings and individually with Walk and Talks. “ explains Betty Chadwick, CEO. Openreach cancelled their appearance in March, and are now coming to HCC in June. Five Godolphin teams complete Ten Tors Challenge 2022

In the foggy gloom of Saturday morning, the teams set off on their adventures - 35 miles of self-sufficient travel across the wilds of Dartmoor. As the sun chased the fog away by 8 am the temperatures rose and provided an additional challenge for the girls to consider.

Many congratulations to the Godolphin teams who successfully completed the Ten Tors Challenge 2022 on Dartmoor last month. This year, after two years away, Godolphin secured 5 teams on the start line

Back in the Okehampton campsite and across many Wiltshire and Hampshire homes the teams were tracked and followed as they made their way around their designated routes with nail baiting nervousness (some kitchens were even turned into Command Posts, with parents tracking every team). All teams progressed well through the day and remained on course in line with their route cards, making it to the night time camps in good order. Waking up at 4.30am on Sunday morning the teams were greeted with a thick fog

as they readied themselves for a 6.00am start. The fog remained in place for several hours and provided some tricky navigation conditions initially. Slowly, parents gathered at the finish line and welcomed the first tired team over the line at midday. The remaining teams marched in triumphantly over the next couple of hours with the final team arriving at 4.15pm to a huge cheer from all the parents and girls who had stayed on to see their teammates complete the Challenge. This year the most notable characteristic has been the togetherness and teamwork across the whole squad and there is no doubt that is the strength that got all of these girls to the end of the Challenge.
