The group ate their lunch, hunched uncomfortably over on blankets, chasing slippery tomatoes and potatoes around their plates with knives and forks. When they left, it had to be said that rarely had a picnic, in the history of picnics, looked as heavy on the long walk back to the car as it had on the way out.

The last thing I want to be doing is sitting hunched over on a blanket chasing salad around…” Himself murmured.

4

“Um… Can’t we have prawn sandwiches and pork pies, Darling? And crisps. And maybe those nice chocolate puddings from M&S?

Recalling these experiences – with not ‘overly elaborate’, ‘heavy’, ‘bland’, ‘soggy’ or ‘smelly’ uppermost in her mind, she consulted Himself. “I’m thinking colourful, tasty poke bowls of salmon, carrot, avocado, edamame, brown rice and sriracha mayo.” Her daughter, living in stylish Brisbane would, no doubt, approve.

No Picnic

Enviously, she’d watched the family dishing up an elegant feast of prawns, cold chicken, hot new potatoes, salad and chilled white wine, followed by an elaborate roulade - and cheeseboard eaten from more china crockery. Cups of tea appeared, made with water boiled on a primus and poured from a tea pot. Unable to imagine any omissions she asked, hungrily, “forgotten what?” Himself had laid back comfortably on the grass and said “The servants. All that prepping and lugging’s no picnic.”

Well, there was that. With their local town’s M&S sadly the subject of recent closures, she planned a drive-by shop for sandwiches, pies and puddings at a Marks’ service station en-route to the forest. Mentally she gave herself a knowing look and shrewd tap on the nose; can’t leave the picnic behind if you buy it on the way.. A road closure and diversion put paid to that. A change in the weather and some very un-1976 un-scheduled rain put a dampener on things too. Fate had determined there would be no picnic. There was, however, a quick purchase at the village shop on the way Himselfhome.. munched happily on the knobbly chocolate bar. “Delicious. No prep, no lugging, it’s not bland or soggy. Do you know,“ he peered at the attractive purple, red and white wrapper, “I think this might be my favourite Picnic®!”

The sun shone. Relentlessly. No dire portents of storms darkened the weather forecast for days to come. No rain at ConfusionWimbledon.setin.Was this summer? Was this even England? Was this…. and the notion arose in the minds of those over a certain age… 1976? After all, ABBA and the hosepipe ban were back.. No. For one, in 1976, as far as she remembered, there was a general feeling of joy that you could reliably plan something outside. And relief from parents that it wasn’t raining during the holidays. But in 2022 she was determined that they would enjoy the weather despite the grim warnings; they would be careful. Gone were the lazy, hazy, crazy days of her youth when she’d lie in the sun under, presumably, a fully functioning ozone layer, wearing nothing but baby oil. The very thought made her shudder and apologise to her poor abused skin. Yes, she decided – they would partake (somewhere in the shade, wearing factor 30) of that great British tradition – the picnic. Or even that great French tradition - Le Picnic – if baguettes were Overinvolved.the years picnics had featured with reliable regularity. Some had been weird; the brie and broccoli sandwiches – soggy, bland, smelling sort of farty. Others had been wonderful; Greek meze and a bottle of red on an Ionian beach. Picnics could be good, bad and downright waspy. One wet August bank holiday, trying to impress a new boyfriend on a first date, she’d bought M&S everything. No matter the weather was disappointing, she’d thought, the food would compensate. They’d arrived in the New Forest only to find that the cold bag with the cool drinks, prawn sandwiches, the pork pies and the fancy chocolate puddings, had somehow been left behind amidst the splashy mad dash through the torrential rain to the car. Sat in a layby with just napkins, condiments and crisps, watching a sodden New Forest pony empty its bowels, had been a bit of a low point. A glum “home?” followed by a glummer “why not.” Funny, she couldn’t recall a second date.. The memory of following a family on a long trek along the banks of the Thames loomed large as well. Everyone including the children had trudged, weighed down with bags, baskets and insulated boxes. As they unpacked, the mystery was revealed; multiple china plates, bowls, glasses and bottles. As, sat nearby, she had enjoyed a lunch-less excursion with Himself, he commented, “they’ve forgotten something.”

Happy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street. We have never had less than a 5star review and have won the HOUZZ best of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses. We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and un-exciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.

Bespoke sizing - Media walls, boot rooms, custom offices, installed by ex shipwright joiners with exceptional attention to detail

Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture

The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. If you are still unsure after reading this, go and read some of our reviews on our Happy Kitchens Houzz profile, and do a search of kitchen companies on there by review rating, we are always close to the top of the Out-of-the-boxlist. thinking, bespoke design features, and friendly staff with excellent attention to detail are just a few of the reasons you should call us today. If that isn’t enough please do remember that the design visit is free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

So whether you need an amazing Kitchen, Utility, Bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, Office, Media wall or Living Room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, Bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans. companies on Houzz, offering free home design visits

Our customers will often use us again, and recommend us to Family and Friends. The quote from the review above was from a customer who has chosen us twice, and their parents also have a Happy Kitchen, and two of the parents' friends.

Whilst events in the world and the economy control turnover and turnover affects prices, it is personal circumstance which creates the desire or need move on.

Festival takes place on the 11th September 2022. Taste of Wickham Park and Ride (PO17 5HE). This new and improved parking area will be the largest car park and will offer easy access in and out. 3 buses will operate from 9:45am until the last people leave shortly after 4pm, and it is completely free. The entrance is opposite McCarthy’s on Winchester Road, and the bus stops at the Winchester Road entrance to the Square. Disabled parking is also available at this car park (on hard ground) but regrettably our minibuses are unable to take passengers in wheelchairs.

The value of properties in the same street can differ hugely and can be affected by the popularity of an area, schooling, accessibility to infrastructures, countryside or coast and, of course, supply and economy. Portal valuations, whilst popular, don’t consider these influencing factors nor any works or money spent on improvements; they are based on percentage calculations and can be wildly inaccurate. An experienced property professional will be tuned in to the local market, will be aware of both buyer’s expectations and comparable properties sold (not just marketed) and will therefore be able arrive at a realistic value for your property.

The right time to move is always when the time is right for you and likely if you wait for global events to stabilise you could be waiting a long time. If your circumstances dictate a change, don’t delay. We can help. Our advice is free. D C Tel: 01730

Hello, Plant Lovers! So far, we’ve touched on “Right Plant, Right Place,” and some classic principles of Garden Design. Now here are some plants for busy people, that will grow happily without too much faff. Most can manage in the dry, but stay attractive for humans and pollinators alike. Additionally, most are perennial, which reduces both work for the gardener, and the impact on the environment involved in raising annuals from seed. The palate here is shades of green, silver and purple. Purple flowers attract pollinators, and the soft down on some of the more silvery leaves has evolved as a way to preserve available water. They are all gorgeous, obviously.

Bulbs to plant in Autumn and forget about are: Native English Bluebells English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), Crocus, and Grape Hyacinths (Muscari) .

Your pollinators will thank you for their flowers in Spring.

As you can hopefully see, our fundraising is very much a means to an end for helping anyone who lives in the Meon Valley and only possible with your support.

So next time you see us out - ask us about being a Lion and what we actually do and as always, if you need our help - please contact us

Rotarians Bob Mussellwhite and Richard Coghlan (known as Cogy!) set off from our Rotary Wheel House at Hill Head this morning/Saturday 13th August on a big adventure!

The Lions Minibus - We run our legendary Meon Valley Minibus, out every week supporting various clubs and lunch clubs. It is also used by other local groups and clubs for transport when needed. It is the ultimate community bus.

As President Pam Marsden said “I just know they can do it! They have been practising hard to ensure they are in peak condition. They have also kept their costs to a minimum, to benefit The Rainbow Centre, by being entirely self-sufficient. They have arranged to camp each night in the gardens of fellow Rotarians along the route in England and France! Our Rotary Club is twinned with one in Cabourg, France, so that overnight stop might be upgraded to a bedroom rather than a garden!”

Fundraising to help other organisations - We help the wonderful team at Rose Road Association and The Rainbow Centre in joint fundraising activities - just check out their websites to see the amazing work they do in our area. This year we also helped the Soberton & Newtown Ukrainian Group with a donation for some essential toiletries. Each spring we also do the Marie Currie collections in Bishops Waltham.

- So sorry I missed thanking Contraband off my previous newsletter. They did a great job and had lots of the children dancing along in the arena. Rainbow Centre Gardening Team

The Rotary Club of Fareham continues its fundraising efforts towards an accessible roundabout for The Rainbow Centre in Fareham. We had the Rainbow Dippers swimming in the Solent from Lee on Solent to Hill Head and NOW there’s an amazing cycle ride by two members of our Club for this great cause.

The planned roundabout for The Rainbow Centre will provide wheelchair access and will be such an improvement. Visit our Just Giving page by searching for Bob and Cogy’s Rotary Rainbow Roundabout Ride or email farehamrotary.pr@gmail.com – it’s the same email if you’re interested in knowing more about joining our Rotary Club in Fareham too - we meet on Thursday lunchtimes at 12:30. Christmas Cheer - We provide a small amount of Christmas cheer via Age Concern, Homestart and the Foodbank - (sorry to mention Christmas so early).

Socials - But it’s not all work and no play - we actually enjoy the Fete, doing the BBQ at many local events and when the work is done, we have also been known to have a get together down the local. Friendship and socialising, whilst giving back, is an important part of being a Lion, you can read all about us at our website.

22 COMMUNITY 22

The Lions Go roaring on The Swanmore Fete always marks the start of our new Lions year; we’re always so pleased to put on a great day for the community and get our fundraising off to a solid start. But sometimes we are asked; why do Meon Valley Lions Club need to fundraise? what do you actually spend the money on? Below is a short summary of where the money raised actually goes: Calls for Lions Help - We provided direct help, when asked, for families in the Meon Valley. In the last 12 months, we purchased cookers, washing machines, fridge freezers, rugs, beds, mattresses, bedding, clothes and helped with a couple of gardening projects. The help gives families a leg up when needed.

Bob, Cogy - Pres, Pam outside the Rotary Wheel House

Contact with external organisations - We maintain regular contact with key external groups like the Food Bank, Age Concern, Rainbow Centre, Rose Road Ass, Baby Bank, Wickham Pantry, Homestart, Fitzroy, Adult and Children Services at Hants CC, and Citizen Advice - they always know the Meon Valley Lions are on hand should they know of anyone who needs our help.

They are on their way to cycling a massive 420 miles to raise funds for a new all-inclusive roundabout for The Rainbow Centre in Fareham. The Centre supports children with motor impairment to overcome their difficulties through conductive education. Bob and Cogy decided a good fundraiser would be a Rotary Rainbow Roundabout Ride cycling from the Fareham area into France. They will follow the ‘Sustran 2 cycle route’ along the south coast to Dover before crossing the Channel to Calais. From there they will follow the ‘Eurovelo 4 cycle route’ along the coast of Normandy to Ouistreham. Hopefully this will result in a return on 20th August, having completed this mammoth journey, to gain all the sponsorship promised!

“The war in Ukraine has led many to argue that we should shun all Russian culture,” says Susanne Stanzeleit, leader of the Primrose Piano Quartet, “but we have to remember that Russia in the nineteenth century included many countries that would now be regarded as parts of democratic Europe and composers considered as ‘Russian’ often thought of themselves as really belonging Theelsewhere.”Primrose has included Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio and Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata in the opening concert of this year’s West Meon Music Festival, which starts on 8th September.

During the evening you will see a variety of birds fly including falcons, vultures, owls and kites, at this special time of day. The evening will start with a delicious barbecue and a home-made Chocolate Brownie.

Less controversial works included in this year’s festival include Schubert’s last chamber work, the String Quintet in C, and piano quartets by Mozart and Beethoven. Full details of the festival, which runs from 8th to 11th September with eight concerts in Meon Valley churches can be found at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk.

“While some people may be reluctant to listen to what is regarded as ‘Russian music’, we must remember that its composers lived in a very different country from Putin’s Russia,” adds Stanzeleit.“Tchaikovsky regarded Ukraine as ‘home’ while Shostakovich was persecuted during the Stalin era and later composed works that were still regarded as high risk in the 1960s – such as the Babi Yar symphony based on Yevtushenko’s poem condemning the massacre of Ukrainian Jews.”

Family Summer's End Concert at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens

In April 2022 a villa in the Ukrainian town of Trostyanets in North-eastern Ukraine was destroyed by the Russians. The villa was known as Tchaikovsky’s House and was where this famous “Russian” composer created his first symphonic work – the overture “The Storm” in 1864. His grandfather, Pyotr Fedorovich Tchaikovsky, who eventually became governor of Glazov near Moscow, was born in Mykolaivka, some 50 miles north of Trostyanets and Tchaikovsky always regarded Ukraine as his spiritual home and the place where he could be Shostakovichhappiest.was so heavily criticised by Stalin in 1936 that he was forced to keep his Fourth Symphony, written that year, funder wraps or fear of being sent to the Gulags: it was finally premièred in 1961. While he regained some favour during the Second World War, in 1948 his music was again banned, he was dismissed from the Moscow Conservatory and, according to a friend from those days, spent his nights “waiting for his arrest on the landing by the lift, so that at least his family wouldn't be disturbed”. Like Tchaikovsky his family roots were elsewhere– his grandfather, Bolesław Szostakowicz, was from Poland.

The Power of Fun: by Jane Gandee, headmistress of St Swithun’s, Winchester

EDUCATION

Price defines fun as activities that are playful, involve a connection with others and involve ‘flow’ or being so immersed in what you are doing that you don’t notice time passing. She also points out that as we get older, we are often encouraged to take things more seriously. Yet there is no evidence that this produces any positive benefit. Our aim at St Swithun’s is to have fun in a range of different ways. And it’s not just about the students. Why would any of us want to work in a fun-free community? Indeed, as far as I am concerned, one of the most important advantages of working in a school is the many, varied opportunities for fun. Increasingly, however, we need to differentiate between true fun and the type of activities that our students are told are fun, but which actually leave you feeling ‘dead inside’ as Price puts it, such as scrolling through your social media feed. Therefore, we have been turning to more traditional activities such as dancing. We now have a school dance featuring iconic St Swithun’s moves such as cradling (a lacrosse move) and playing the air guitar, which we have performed together on several occasions. Similarly, nothing beats communal singing or solving quirky, interactive problems in the style of TaskMaster. These activities are designed to include the three key components: playfulness, connection with others and On‘flow’.our final day of the term, we all (guests, students and staff) sang My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean complete with actions. There wasn’t a serious face in the marquee and we left for the holidays buzzing with a spring in our step and the intention of creating further opportunities for fun over the summer. I am sure that the intentional creation of micro moments of fun would help everyone to enjoy life more fully. I am certainly looking forward to more minor injuries as I wholeheartedly embrace my inner child.

Price outlines the benefits of fun for everyone. As she says, ‘if you make fun a priority, you will be healthier and have more energy. You will be more productive, less resentful and less stressed. You will find community and a sense of purpose. You will stop languishing and start flourishing.’ Frankly, who wouldn’t want to remove languishing from their life?

St Swithuns, Winchester

As I write this, I am ruefully aware of my skinned elbows, and a gash on my chin which necessitated a visit to A+E. In the space of a week, I managed to acquire the injuries of an energetic toddler. My elbows are the result of an over-exuberant slide down the inflatables that we had in school on the penultimate day of term whereas the chin injury is from falling over my own feet whilst playing a family tennis match. Did they hurt and are they faintly ridiculous? Absolutely, but I acquired them whilst having fun. I came across the Power of Fun by Catherine Price earlier this year, and it has had a big impact on my approach to life. As I have got older, I have instinctively tried to take myself less seriously. Afterall, as a headteacher, it’s always safer to laugh at yourself before the students do. And now, I have evidence to reinforce the importance of a playful approach to life.

COMMUNITYRotaryShoeboxscheme…Summerisover…RollonChristmas

The major change for this year is that we are able to supply boxes, produced specifically for this project. It has been increasingly difficult to obtain shoeboxes from shops and the variation in sizes has given us logistical problems.. BUT we will still accept your own standard size shoebox. The suggested donation per box has also increased to £2.00 which covers the cost of the box and transportation, which has unfortunately increased over the last year. Unfortunately as this goes to press we do not have the confirmed date for when the Shoeboxes need to be returned, but we normally work on having them in for the School October half term. If you would like to support us this year please contact Paul Chesterman on andwhochesterman@bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk,paul.willbeabletosupplyyouwithboxesanymoreinformationneeded.

As I write this, plans for this years Rotary Christmas activities are already underway, most notably getting things in place for the annual Shoebox scheme which this year will hopefully bring a bit of Christmas cheer to the young children of Romania, Moldova, Montenegro, and Albania. Plus the many displaced children from Ukraine in Romania and Moldova will benefit and some are going direct to Ukraine with the help of Rotary in Romania.

New Rotary Year , New President As June drew to a close we saw the end of the Rotary Year and with that our President Mandy Tourle handed over her chain of office to incoming President Sara Walker who in turn handed her Senior Vice President chain to Jason Rule. We look forward to the year ahead with Sara at the helm and I’m sure Mandy is looking forward to a well-earned rest. At the hand over meeting outgoing President Mandy had the pleasure of surprising 2 of our members, Maurice Tester and Doug Draper, with Paul Harris Awards in recognition of their many years of devoted service and numerous roles they have fulfilled over that time. There was also a third member who was awarded a Paul Harris Award, John Stream, but, unfortunately, he could not be there on the night. Young Carers weekend and Henry the VIIIth. As soon as one Rotary year ended, we were immediately out there with a very busy first weekend in July where we saw members putting in a combined total of nearly 100 hours voluntary service. Over the weekend we, along with other local Rotary Clubs, provided a pop up café at YMCA Fairthorne Manor as part of their Young Carers Weekend which is the largest festival in the world for young people with a caring responsibility at home. Created in 2000 and run in partnership with The Children’s Society, the weekend provides opportunities for young people to enjoy a break from their responsibilities, have fun, make new friends and have their voices heard on issues that affect them. There were fireworks, a radio station, Voice Zone, silent disco, chill out/pamper zone, adventurous activities and more… We also supported the celebrations in Bishop’s Waltham marking the 500th anniversary of the visit of Henry the VIIIth to the area.

Carnival, Family Fun day, Motorcade and Dog Show Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club ‘s everpopular Carnival, Family Fun day, Motorcade and Dog Show proved to be even more popular than ever after its enforced 3 year break. We had perfect weather and record numbers came to enjoy the live music, food, and drink plus the many stalls. We also had a record number of dogs entering the Dog Show with categories ranging from Fastest Biscuit Cruncher to Best 6 legs. All of this enabled us to make over £11,000 pounds, and at the time of going to press this figure was still rising. This amazing amount of money will help us to help others who are in need Locally, Nationally and Internationally.

The popular Secrets of the Heath event returns next month, celebrating our local heathland’s vibrant history and wildlife with a packed programme of events.

Olivia French, Activities and Engagement Officer for Heathlands Reunited, said: “We hope the weekend of exciting events will encourage visitors of all ages in the area to take an interest in their local heathland habitat. These heathland sites are so rare and special and we want to inspire the community to look after them for future generations to enjoy.”

Secrets of the Heath is a chance for people to find out how people have lived and worked the heath over thousands of years and how they can play your part today to save their heaths through the Heathlands Reunited project.

Heaths are home to a wide variety of fascinating and endangered wildlife species, including the sand lizard, natterjack toad and nightjar. Without active management, they would disappear and those species would be lost.

The festival is organised by the Heathlands Reunited: Wealden Heath SAMM project – a partnership of 10 like- minded organisations funded by East Hampshire District Council and Whitehill Town Council. The festival partners are: Deadwater Valley Trust, The Land Trust, Whitehill and Bordon Community Trust, Whitehill and Bordon Regeneration Company.

The free event takes place at Hogmoor Inclosure, Whitehill & Bordon, over the weekend of 10 and 11 September from 11am to 4pm. From Saxon re-enactments, a Bronze Age camp, have-a-go archery, mini-Viking workshops to close encounters with reptiles, there will be activities to keep the whole family entertained. This year on the Saturday, there will be the opportunity to meet grazing livestock, such as goats and sheep, that would have once grazed our heathland. Dr Bike will be on hand providing tips and free bike servicing so what better excuse to leave the car at home and bring your bike! On Saturday night, there is also the chance to join in an expert-led bat walk around the inclosure. On Sunday morning before the event starts, have a go at our countryside dog challenge and to be entered into a prize draw to win a hamper of goodies for your four legged friend. Food and drink will be aplenty on site for visitors on both days.

Written by Dale Wasserman and featuring spectacular music by Mitch Leigh, you can look forward to such toe-tapping numbers as ‘Little Bird’, ‘I, Don Quixote’, ‘The Impossible Dream’, ‘I Really Like Him’, and ‘Dulcinea’. And with lyrics by Joe Darion, you'll be dancing and singing along to the chivalry beat long after the curtain falls! Other shows performancesandare available at these venues

Taking inspiration from Miguel de Cervantes’ seventeenthcentury literary masterpiece, Don Quixote, and set during the violent Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha follows failed playwright and tax collector Miguel de Cervantes as he is thrown into prison for attempting to tax a monastery. As he awaits trial, a kangaroo court threatens to confiscate Cervantes’ precious and uncompleted manuscript for Don Quixote. While giving his defence, Cervantes, along with his servant, suddenly transform into the characters of the very book he is trying to save. As both of their imaginations run wild, the duo, now believing themselves to be Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, do everything in their power to destroy evil, set things right and restore the age of chivalry that has long thought to be dead.

54 LITERATURE

Val Anne Lee, poet and author, has lived in and around New Alresford for fifteen years. Her popular and much-loved children’s books ‘On the Banks of Hatchet Pond’ and ‘Podge goes Splodge at Hatchet Pond’ feature Podge, an ugly old frog who wishes he could fly, and Dizzy a beautiful little dragonfly who flits around Hatchet Pond in the New Forest. Humour figures largely in most of Val’s work although she says “To be honest, I didn’t have much to laugh about in those early days but my crazy sense of humour kept me sane”.

In addition, when left to singly support her family of three kids, an added responsibility was the young calf which had been left tied to a plum tree! More of ‘Val’s Verses’ have been narrated monthly at a charity-fund-raising Breakfast Club for ladies including ‘The Rogue’ (the wonky shopping trolley), ‘It’s a Drag’ (“Smoking’s a disgusting bore” ) and many more.

Charley Supermogsupercat, super read

Val’s three books were published by her talented illustrator, Simon Chadwick (CeratopiaBooks.co.uk) for ‘On the Banks of Hatchet Pond’, its sequel ‘Podge Goes Splodge at Hatchet Pond’ both priced at £4.99 plus P&P and ‘The Monkey Who Wouldn’t Eat Nuts’ at £6.00 plus P&P. Charley Supermog is priced at £8.00 plus P&P if ordered directly from Val who has sole ownership and limited stock (email val@valsimbooks).

Val starts her on-line interview by asking....”WHY do so many youngsters stay for hours in their bedrooms staring at small screens instead of escaping those four walls to enjoy fresh air and all that nature and the outside world has to offer? It’s so unhealthy - both physically and mentally”

Her new full-length story CHARLEY*SUPERMOG is for older kids but Val says “It will resonate with those adults who enjoyed ‘normal childhood adventures before computers overtook the world”. Dedicated ‘For Cat Lovers Everywhere’ this crazy adventure story features a once-scrawny tatty-eared farm cat who by chance taps a boring old stone and gains magical powers, becoming totally humanised and taking his young owner and her family and friends on amazing and hair-raising adventures which vastly improve many lives.....even those of two nasty young village bullies! Many of Val’s words touch on current topics...for example she speaks boldly for the ‘Gingers’ of this world in her description of their “lovely richlycoloured hair which shines in the sunlight like burnished gold”, Val says her mother and two of her sister were auburn-haired - hence these words. The book also has its young characters enjoying the outdoor life....swinging on ropes dangling over rivers, collecting conkers, daring to skate on frozen ponds and borrowing a metal detector to dig for treasure and more.. At the time of writing, CHARLEY has yet to be released - having been kept in lockdown for the duration of Covid. However, subject to on-going negotiation with Anthony Oxley the owner of New Alresford’s prestigious bookshop Laurence Oxley’s, CHARLEY is soon to be Inlaunched..addition to her published and so-farunpublished portfolio of more than a dozen children’s stories, Val also writes for adults... mostly humorous poems based on everyday ‘gripes’. She says “My family think I’m slightly eccentric because I have a poem for every occasion and can give a recitation from memory ‘at the drop of a hat’.....such titles as ‘Stinky Old Billy’ the old goat once in her reluctant ownership with other animals - horses, bantams, pigs, fluffy white rabbits which often escaped their hutches to breed with the wild ones in the fields beyond.

Val has an extensive portfolio of unpublished rhyming and humorous stories for youngsters and has commissioned Guy Tomlinson of themarketingdirectors.co.uk to approach agents/ publishers on her behalf.....to hopefully gain sufficient interest to back her.
