Basic Concepts for Heating Enclosed Spaces The winter season is a busy time of the year for Brent Majkrzak of Precision Equipment Manufacturing. “We take a lot of calls from customers and our dealers trying to size a heater for their specific project.” Precision manufactures a line of high-output flameless heating units that can put out between 350,000-1.4 million BTU/hour.

The biggest factors in determining how much output is needed for a specific project include: • Volume of space needing to be heated • Amount of temperature rise needed • Leakage • How well insulated the space is • The time-frame needed to come up to the desired temperature “Generally speaking, a customer is going to need a lot more output on a job that requires a quick jump in temperature starting from a low base. Especially if the volume is large and the space is not well insulated. That’s just common sense. But other factors are involved including the relative humidity of the air and if the space includes a lot of “stuff” that is also cold. Take for example a heated shop. If you pull a 40,000lb dozer in that’s been sitting in -10 degree temperatures you are not only heating the air but you’ll need to heat the 40,000lbs of metal to room temperature. That takes a lot of energy,” explained Brent.

Technically, a BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the energy it takes to heat one lb of water from 39 degrees F to 40 degrees F. It’s also equivalent to the energy it takes to heat 55 cubic ft of air by 1 degree F. You also have to account for heat loss thru the walls, windows, doors and the roof. A general rule of thumb is 75 BTUs/square foot just to maintain the desired temperature once it has been achieved but that can vary depending upon the height of the space and the amount of insulation and leakage, and the temperature of the outside air.

“Normally we would suggest a heater in the 350,000 BTU range for 100,000 cubic feet of space, provided there are no “special” circumstances that would take extra draw,” said Brent. “But there again, it’s going to also depend on the temperature required, the temperature outside, how much heat loss is involved, and other variables.”

Another thing you have to look out for is water vapor that is released with “direct fired units” such as propane or natural gas heaters. “Every 100,000 BTU of heat produced by a direct flame burning propane releases 8.21lbs of water vapor. With natural gas it’s 3.5lbs. This can be a big issue as many construction or oil field applications use millions of BTU/hour. If we use the example of a single RT1400 flameless heater, the equivalent propane direct flame heater would input 115lbs of water vapor into the project per hour. This causes all sorts of issues, including slow dry downs of drywall, spill cleanups, wash bays, etc. It can cause non-insulated buildings to freeze up as the water condenses,” explained Brent.

Aerial Equipment Inspections Staying Safe on the Jobsite

Aerial lifts can be found on a wide variety of jobsites and are very popular rental items. Whether owning or renting, it’s important that these units are properly maintained and inspected. The ANSI requirements are for a complete annual inspection of the lift “no later than 13 months from the date of the prior annual inspection”.

“We treat the annual aerial inspections like we do an annual crane inspection,” says Jeff Feickert, Crane Customer Support Specialist. “We look at the whole machine, both visually and functionally.

That includes everything from the frame welds to the warning decals and limit switches and alarms.”

Jeff has been with Titan Machinery for nearly 20 years and has had a lot of experience with what to look for when inspecting aerial units. “We’ve done a lot of these over the years, along with our crane inspections. You see a lot of the same things yearin and year-out,” Jeff continued. The most common problems found on inspections are: •

Missing operators manual

Safety/warning stickers missing or illegible

•

Tilt alarm not working properly

ANSI requirements are for annual inspections to be made by a person qualified as a mechanic for that make or model thru either class work or experience. Some companies do their own inspections and others choose to use an outside vendor like Titan Machinery to do the inspections.

The critical factor is having a knowledgeable person do the inspections.

Once Jeff or one of his colleagues finishes an inspection he places a sticker on the machine certifying that it has been inspected along with the date and submits a written report to the owner of the lift detailing the findings from the inspection and what needs to be repaired, if anything, to safely function on the jobsite.

“The sticker and the inspection report do not indicate that the machine passed inpsection,” warns Jeff. “It only indicates that an inspectin was performed and when it was done. It is the owner’s responsibility to see that defects are brought into compliance.”

Annual inspections provide piece-of-mind that the machines are in good working order and are safe to operate.

They are a great way of spotting problems before they lead to downtime or, even worse, an avoidable accident on the jobsite. Plus they are required by law. And in the event of an OSHA inspection or an accident, a good record of consistent, thorough inspections by a competent person gives you piece of mind that everything is being done to maintain a safe working environment and keep your downtime to a minimum.

Rent or Own? There are several factors to consider when deciding whether to add a new machine to your fleet or to rent it. Often contractors find that from an economic standpoint, it’s more profitable to rent a piece of equipment than to own it.

“One of the reasons that Titan has expanded the rental part of our business is because we recognize that in many cases it makes more sense for our customers to rent a piece of equipment than to purchase it,” explains Patrick Fisher, VP of Construction for Titan Machinery. “Our goal is to provide our customers with complete equipment solutions and part of that equation is having a strong rental presence. Combined with our regional footprint of fullservice construction equipment locations we can offer our customers a wide range of solutions including short-term or long-term rentals.”

When Can It Make More Sense to Rent?

Some of the factors that play a role in making a rental versus purchase decision are: • Availability – Sometimes it’s difficult to find the right machine in the time-frame needed in order to keep things moving at the jobsite. Rather than committing to purchasing a machine that’s not really what you want (but it’s the only one you can find in the time you have to look) it may be better to rent a unit to get thru the job and take the time to do a thorough analysis of what you may want to purchase long-term.

• Utilization – Short-term equipment needs are often best met with rental equipment. A unit that is only needed for a short-term project isn’t likely to offer a very good pay-back of the capital that’s invested in it. This is especially true if it’s a special-application unit that rarely is needed for most of your jobs.

• Variable Costs vs. Fixed Costs – Rental units are a variable cost that can be adjusted for demand.

Once you’ve committed to a purchase, that equipment is either tying up capital or is costing you a monthly payment until it is paid-off. Those costs are fixed and remain whether you have a job or not. In the current economic climate it’s often beneficial to keep fixed costs as low as possible and conserve capital.

• Cost of Maintenance – Owning equipment costs money, even when the unit is “paid for” by a job. As equipment ages repairs must be made.

• Tax Considerations – Rental payments are typically expensed. Equipment purchases are depreciated over a period of time. Lately, with accelerated depreciation rules in effect, the tax implications of rental versus purchasing have been distorted towards purchases. Historically, equipment rental costs have been a legitimate tax management tool used to manage taxable income. Consult your tax professional for further clarification.

• Balance Sheet – A strong balance sheet can have huge implications to bonding and the cost of borrowing capital. In most cases rentals do not appear on the balance sheet. In “slow” times, rentals can be returned. Reducing your “owned” fleet of equipment, especially in a soft market, can lead to substansial losses of capital.

• Obsolescence – Machine technology is rapidly advancing. A unit that is 10 years old can be several generations behind in technology and may be far less efficient than a newer model even if it has low hours.

Ownership Rewards?

There are many reasons to own the equipment you operate. Many contractors own a core fleet of equipment which is normally enough to meet their typical work-load. When the workload increases they can either run the equipment they own even harder, purchase more equipment or rent. Often contractors will choose to own equipment that they believe will be well utilized. The tax rules allowing accelerated depreciation in effect over the last few years has made it more economically feasible to purchase equipment for contractors with a strong balance sheet and a steady pipeline of work. You also have 100% control of the availability of your own fleet, although that’s subject to the constraints of break-downs, competing needs, and transportation. And some owners just prefer to own most of the equipment they run. In climates where the work typically slows up during the winter, some owners prefer to keep key employees on the payroll doing maintenance for their fleet and/or snow removal during the “off season”.

Do What’s Right For Your Situation In the end, there are trade-offs to be made whether you rent or own a machine. The trend over the last few years has been a stronger reliance on rental equipment due to the challenging economic situation in the construction field. Many customers are placing a larger emphasis on maintaining a strong Balance Sheet and liquidity to combat the economic uncertainty.
