Titan Rentals Adds Scrapers and Haul Trucks to Rental Fleet Titan Rentals has quickly built a reputation in the region for being a dependable source for a wide-range of every day aerial and earth-moving equipment. Now one of the largest rental fleets in the area is seeing the addition of a dedicated fleet of off-road trucks and tractor/scraper combos to further widen the range of rental equipment offerings. “A lot of our customers prefer to work with our Stores for all their rental needs,” said Titan’s Vice President of Construction, Patrick Fisher. “We’re seeing an increase in the number of earthmoving projects across our footprint and we’ve moved to provide additional fleet to help meet the demand.” Patrick noted that the added performance of the tractor/scraper combo has been a big draw for contractors on projects such as dikes, retention ponds and other major earth-moving projects. “We’ve got a number of customers that have tried moving material in different ways across our region. Hands-down the most cost effective method for most jobs is to pull pans with tractors. Fuel savings alone over conventional self-propelled scrapers is enormous. Plus the cost of running the equipment is lower. Cycle times are great and the ease of loading the large single pans we favor in our fleet makes operators extremely efficient from a yards-per-day standpoint,” he continued. Tractors are supplied by the agricultural division of Titan Machinery. “The tractors we put in the fleet are ordered in speced-out for pulling pans,” said Patrick. “We have access thru our ag division to both CaseIH and New Holland tractors that are built at the CNH factory in Fargo, ND. These tractors have always been known for having heavy axles, frame and drive-train components. It’s a real good fit for construction applications. Many of the engine and drive-train components are common with our own product lines on the construction side – Case wheel loaders are built at the same factory as the tractors, for example. So our technicians are familiar with the components and systems.” “We also have the flexibility of going with the Quadtrac for customers requiring extra traction or stability. If a track tractor is required for a job our customers have found that the quad is a far better solution than twin-track models offered by other manufacturers. The Quadtrac has a direct-drive track and puts full power to the ground on all 4-corners during turns.
4
1-855-44-TITAN
The performance is second to none in the track-tractor market. We’ve found that most jobs do not require a track machine, but for those that do, the quad is the best solution,” explained Patrick. Arguably, the most important component is the scraper pans themselves. The pan of choice for Titan Rentals has been the 33-yard K-Tec set-up as a single unit. “Most manufacturers require tandem pans to get close to 30 yards per cycle. However, we believe that there are many advantages running with a single large scraper. K-Tec is the only manufacturer that offers that kind of capacity in a single-pan configuration. We’ve had great success with it and our customers are beginning to realize the advantage of running with the single large pan,” said Patrick. A lot of engineering went into the K-Tec design. The design of the floor allows the scraper to fill easily. The unique hitch design transfers weight towards the middle of the tractor allowing for better balance and traction with less draft on the rear of the tractor. The front gate opens extremely wide during the dump cycle to combat bridging. And operators do not have to struggle filling both a front and trailing scraper – something that beginning operators can find challenging. “Everything is almost over-built on the K-Tecs. You can tell that they were designed by somebody who actually used the product in difficult conditions. All the “knocks” on pull scrapers you hear about – they are hard to fill, they don’t work in sticky clay, they won’t stand-up on the jobsite – are all factored for in the K-Tec design. These things will go into some of the worst conditions and just keep performing day after day without plugging or failing. K-Tec pans are easy to operate and don’t require a lot of maintenance which makes them perfect for our rental customers,” explained Patrick. And for jobs that are better suited for haul trucks, new Tier-IV Terex 40-ton off-road trucks have been added to the Titan Rentals fleet. “We re-tooled our fleet of haul trucks to the new Terex TA400s. When we looked for a long-term off-road truck partner that would be able to provide the superior product and support. With Terex we feel like we’ve got a good partner for this segment of our business. The trucks are solid and offer a great solution for our rental customers,” he said. “At the end of the day Titan Rentals is committed to providing a full range of rental equipment solutions. We’ve made a heavy commitment to aerial equipment in the past 18 months. With the addition of tractordrawn scrapers and articulated haul trucks, our line of earthmoving equipment – always one of our strengths – becomes even stronger. Our team is committed to meeting the rental equipment needs of large and small projects throughout our footprint.”

The 2011 Missouri River flood has left a lot of damaged levees in its wake. Today work continues on repairing and shoring up the damage so that the levees are ready to protect against the next flood. One of the contractors on the job is general contractor Ho-Chunk Builders, a subsidiary of HCI based out of South Sioux City, NE. Pat Sachau, Superintendent and Site Manager for the project explains the scope of the job. “When the river undergoes a prolonged flood the hydrostatic pressure forces water to seep under the levees causing sand boils to bubble up on the land side. This undermines the integrity of the levee, floods the area around the levee, and can raise the water table on the landward side. What we are doing is coming back in and repairing this damage and rebuilding the levees to withstand the next flood event.” It’s delicate work that requires thoughtful operators and refined techniques to ensure that the levees are not damaged in the process of repairing them. The Army Corps of Engineers supervises the project and ensures that everything is done to their standards. “We’ve had a long track-record with the Corps and have done a lot of levee work for them. They are
8
comfortable with the quality of our work and confident that we hit our deadlines,” explained Pat. At the current jobsite near Bellevue, NE, Ho-Chunk’s crews have found that pulling scrapers behind tractors are the most efficient way of tackling levee work. “Before we went with the Quadtrac and scrapers we were top loading haul trucks with excavators. But we found that the damage we were doing to the levees was causing us more repair work,” said Pat. “That increases our costs and slows us down so we decided to try a different approach. We talked to the Corp and they agreed that pulling scrapers with quads would be a better fit for this work and we’ve been extremely happy with the results since then.” Ho-Chunk is now running a pair of quads with scrapers for the bulk of material moving on the levee jobsites. One is running dual 18-yard scrapers, the other pulls a single 33yd K-Tec scraper. For future work, the company is leaning towards the single-pan set-up as the clear winner. “There’s no comparison between the two set-ups. With the single K-Tec you can get into places for loading and dumping that you cannot do pulling twin
1-855-44-TITAN
18-yard pans. It loads easier and faster and is a lot easier on the tractor. Floatation is excellent. We get full-loads in shorter passes. Our operators are more efficient and get more done in the day when we’re running the single K-Tec. It’s really been amazing to see what these K-Tec scrapers can do. It’s opened our eyes on how we approach earth-moving projects,” said Pat. Ho-Chunk operator Brian Droegmiller agrees that the 33-yard K-Tec scraper pulled by a quad is the best tool they’ve used on these jobs. “We’ve tried different approaches for levee work. We’ve had twin-track machines and twin pan arrangements but they don’t measure up with what we can do with the 33-yard K-Tec on a quad. It’s not even close. And comparing to top-loading haul trucks, we’ve been able to minimize the damage we’re doing to the levees and also eliminate the need for excavators.” “One of the things we really appreciate on the quad and K-Tec is serviceability. The sightglasses on the bogey wheels of the quad is a huge time saver. And there’s not a whole lot of greasing on the whole thing. You’ve got the hitch and pillar bearings on the quad and a few grease points on the K-Tec. It’s a 5-minute in-and-out deal. On a twin-track twin-pan rig we’re running it’s taking 45 minutes a day,” he said. The performance on the K-Tec has really turned heads on the jobsite. “I don’t know who engineered it but it seems to load easier and it
pulls so much easier behind the 535 quad that you don’t know it is back there – which is amazing for a 33-yard scraper – I have pulled doubles that will almost bounce you out of the seat. And it’s equipped with ride control which takes a lot of the shock out of roading. It’s almost shocking how easy it loads and we get a full load every time. I can’t say enough about the performance we’re getting out of this rig,” Brian continued. Mike McCrory, National Sales Manager for K-Tec, was down on the Ho-Chunk job to help get them started. He explains what sets the K-Tec apart from other scrapers. “It’s the way these pans are engineered. It’s a combination of the angle of

the pan and the approach as it engages the ground. The K-Tec is designed so that when the blade engages the ground it is in the position it needs to be in for it load the easiest. We combine that with a long floor because it is easier to load material lengthwise high than crosswise high. What you end up with is a scraper that can completely load, has the floatation to handle diverse ground conditions, and the capacity in a 1-pan configuration that other manufactures can’t achieve with a dual-pan arrangement. It’s simply the best scraper on the market, and certainly the easiest one for operators to run,” said Mike.
“This is a tricky job they are working on down here. You have ground conditions that range from hard-pack to silt and sand and mud. You need to have a scraper with adequate floatation. The levees restrict the room you have maneuver – a single pan set-up is definitely going to offer better maneuverability. Some of the runs are as long as 3.5 miles so you want to be able to completely fill the pan and offer a good ride to keep the cycle times up. This job was tailor-made for a K-Tec pan,” explained Mike.
Pat estimates that they started the job with about 200,000 yards of material to move on several jobsites along the levee. Completion date is set for March 2013 but they expect to be done before that. “We’ve made good progress on the job. The weather has cooperated for the most part and the machinery has performed well. We like getting our equipment thru Titan Machinery and Titan Rentals. We never worry about getting the support we need to keep our equipment running and the jobs going smooth. You have to have confidence in the support you get.”
