TIER IV ENGINES ARE HERE What They Mean for Rental Customers

We’ve all been exposed by now to the news that off-road diesel emissions standards have tightened, forcing manufacturers to reduce the level of particulates and noxious gases being emitted by their engines. There are two main ways that manufacturers have responded to the latest Tier IV EPA regulations: 1. Treating exhaust gas after if leaves the combustion chamber through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR for short. 2. Recirculating a percentage of exhaust gas through the combustion chamber – a process called Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, or CEGR for short. Some manufacturers have indicated they will use a combination of the two systems to meet the even more stringent Tier IV “B” regulations coming into effect shortly. Regardless of the system being used to manage emissions, rental customers need to have a general awareness of the requirements of running these engines on the jobsite.

SCR Engines Engines employing Selective Catalytic Reduction utilize a chemical reaction between exhaust gas and urea commonly sold as Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF to meet emissions standards. Typically SCR is only utilized on engines of greater than 100hp or higher. These engines require operators to fill both a diesel tank and a DEF tank. DEF is typically used at a ratio of 3-5 gallons per 100 gallons of diesel. Tanks are smaller than the diesel tanks on equipment, and typically require filling on every other or every third diesel fill. DEF is readily available from fuel suppliers, truck stops, or equipment dealerships such as Titan Machinery and can be purchased in 2.5 gallon cans to 250 gallon “totes”. It’s important to note that DEF will freeze at 11 degrees Fahrenheit so take note when storing in cold weather. Machines that utilize SCR technology use a heating system to keep DEF thawed in cold conditions. A gauge and alarm system in the cab will alert the operator when the DEF tank needs refilling. If a unit equipped with an SCR engine runs out of DEF the engine’s electronic control system will de-rate the machine into a “limphome” mode.

4

1-855-44-TITAN

CEGR Engines CEGR engines require no additional fluids but instead are equipped with a large exhaust filter that traps Particulate Matter (PM) which fills up during use. At certain intervals the unit will go into a “regeneration” mode which requires the operator to not shut the machine down until completed. During regeneration, the system dumps diesel directly into the filter in order to generate enough heat to burn up the particulate matter that has built up in the filter. In most cases the operator can opt-out of the regeneration, but at some point the filter will produce so much back-pressure in the exhaust system that the system’s sensors will require a manual or “forced” regeneration which requires the machine to be parked while the system regenerate the filter. The interval between regenerations can be stretched by limiting the amount of idle time on the engine. Cold temperatures will also lower the time between regenerations. CEGR engines require ultra-low sulfur fuel and special engine oil due to the recirculation of exhaust gases back thru the engine.

Putting it Together When renting equipment with Tier IV engines make sure your operators are aware of the basic requirements. SCR engines require the DEF tank be refilled or the engine will de-rate. CEGR engines should be allowed to go thru their scheduled regeneration modes – operators who habitually override the regeneration modes will force the machine into a manual regeneration, which could put the unit out of commission for up to an hour, potentially disrupting the jobsite. Maintenance crews need to be aware of the lowsulfur fuel requirements of CEGR machines and need to use the proper grade of engine oil. Engine technology has increased the fuel economy and performance of today’s diesel engine from what it was years ago. But with the advanced technology, operators have more responsibility than just filling up with diesel once a day.

Oil and gas companies from around the country have been coming to North Dakota to work the oil patch in the last few years. Energy Services South is no exception. “We’re headquartered out of Livingston, Alabama but we’re on a 2-year project right now in western ND,” explained Sonny Morris. “We’re used to working jobs all over the south and central US, but this is the first time we’ve worked in North Dakota.”

8

Manager for Titan Rentals Dickinson. “Working with our other Titan Rentals locations we were able to mobilize the equipment they needed so that Sonny’s crews could get rolling on the project. We knew that time and reliability were a big factor. We knew the equipment is reliable, it was just a matter of securing the pieces needed and getting them out to the site.”

The job started last summer in western ND. Energy Services South needed a lot of equipment for the job and turned to Sonny Morris who is in charge for equipment logistics for the project. “I started making some phone calls around and hit upon Titan Rentals,” said Sonny. “We really lucked-out on that – Titan Rentals has been great to work with. I’ve worked in the oil and pipeline business for many years all over the country so I’ve worked with a lot of dealers. These guys are first-class, and rank right up there with any of the rental companies and dealerships we’ve dealt with on other projects.

Time and availability were key factors in Energy Services South choosing to rent with Titan Rentals. Having never been exposed to Case equipment on a pipeline job before and being unfamiliar with equipment dealers in the Dakotas, Sonny was cautious about going with Titan Rentals for the first year of the project. “I didn’t have anything against Case equipment and never heard anything bad about it, but you just don’t see a lot of Case equipment on most pipeline jobs,” said Sonny. “We were encouraged with how good Tyler and the guys at Titan Rentals were to work with and decided to go that route.”

“When we got the call it was apparent that this was going to be a big project that required a lot of equipment,” said Tyler Reisenauer, Rental Account

In the end, Energy Services South had over 35 pieces on the job from Titan Rentals last year. “When we put a pipeline in we do the whole thing – clear the

1-855-44-TITAN

land, dig the trench, place the pipe and backfill the line. It requires a lot of equipment and we need that equipment to be work-ready at all times,” explained Sonny. “The equipment we had on the job last year worked extremely well. We’ve never had better. And Titan Rentals was on-the-spot with service support. It was an easy decision who we would procure equipment from for this year’s portion of the job.” “Energy Services South has been great to work with,” said Tyler. “It’s a lot of work staying on top of a large rental job like this especially with the amount of construction work going on right now in the area, but we’re geared-up for it. The service department has been outstanding. We take a lot of pride in the condition of our fleet and our ability to keep it up and running. It’s what customers like Sonny expect when they rent a fleet of equipment.” “We’ve enjoyed working in North Dakota and hope to get some more work up here after this year’s project is done,” said Sonny. “And when we work in the area that Titan Rentals covers, they will be our first call for equipment. They’ve done everything we’ve asked. The equipment has been great, the service and support have been very professional and first-class. It’s been a good partnership for both parties.”

TRACKS OR TIRES You Make the Call

The next time you pick up the phone to rent a skid steer for the job, take time to consider whether tracks or wheels is the right call. Both types of units fit a wide variety of interchangeable attachments and are extremely versatile on the jobsite. But chances are one is probably a better fit for the job(s).

Advantage: Wheels One of the biggest advantages of going with the traditional wheeled skid steer is cost. Rental rates on wheel units will typically be between 20%-30% lower than the comparable tracked unit – reflecting the higher original acquisition cost and on-going maintenance costs associated with the tracks. Regular skid steers perform well on hard surfaces which can lead to costly wear on a track unit. They are also lighter than the comparable track units and will burn less fuel per hour in typical operating conditions. Applications where regular wheeled skid steers perform well include: •

Snow removal

Lift-and-carry work on hard, flat surfaces such as concrete and asphalt

Road work on established roadbeds

Advantage: Tracks Tracked skid steers, typically referred to in the industry as compact track loaders (CTLs for short), can work in soft, soggy conditions that will stop a regular skid steer in its tracks. Due to the flotation provided by the track system they are able to operate in a wider range of conditions than a regular skid steer. With the extra weight of the track system and the positive, low-slip traction it provides, a CTL is extremely productive in digging or pushing applications. The track system also provides a smoother ride which is an advantage in finish-grade applications and is always appreciated by the operator.

18

1-855-44-TITAN

The track system on a CTL unit requires more horsepower to run, and consequently will burn thru fuel faster than a wheel machine. But in most production applications the CTL will move significantly more material faster than a regular skid steer. Hands-down the CTL is a more versatile unit, although the versatility comes at the cost of accelerated track and undercarriage wear if you use it on hard surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, or packed Class 5. Applications best suited for CTLs include: •

Landscaping

Finish concrete work (final grade on the sand base)

Forestry

Digging or loading applications

You Make the Call In the end, you have to decide if a better ride, more power to the ground and greater floatation are worth the extra cost of renting a CTL, and the generally higher operating costs of having it on the jobsite. If versatility is an important factor in making your choice, a CTL is probably the right move. If you are working on hard surfaces and operating costs are a key consideration, a regular wheel skid steer fits the bill. It may be a good idea to confer with your Titan Rental Account Manager over which machine fits the bill for your jobsite before making a final decision.

Using Portable Generators Safely Portable generators are internal combustion engines used to generate electricity. They are useful when temporary or remote power is needed, and are commonly used during cleanup and recovery efforts following disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. This fact sheet discusses specific hazards inherent with the use of generators and also provides helpful information to ensure that workers and others using such equipment remain safe.

Hazards Associated with Generators: • Shocks and electrocution from improper use of power or accidentally energizing other electrical systems. • Carbon monoxide from a generator’s exhaust • Fires from improperly refueling a generator or inappropriately storing the fuel for a generator • Noise and vibration hazards

Shock and Electrocution The electricity created by generators has the same hazards as normal utility-supplied electricity. It also has some additional hazards because generator uses often bypass the safety devices (such as circuit breakers) that are built into electrical systems. The following precautions are provided to reduce shock and electrocution hazards: • Never attach a generator directly to the electrical system of a structure (home, office, trailer, etc.) unless a qualified electrician has properly installed the generator with a transfer switch. Attaching a generator directly to a building electrical system without properly installed transfer switch can energize wiring systems for great distances. This creates a risk of electrocution for utility workers and others in the area. • Always plug electrical appliances directly into the generator using the manufacturer’s supplied cords or extension cords that are grounded (3-pronged). Inspect the cords to make sure they are fully intact and not damaged, cut or abraded. Never use frayed or damaged extension cords. Ensure the cords are appropriately rated in watts or amps for the intended use. Do not use underrated cords-replace them with appropriately rated cords that use heavier gauge wires. Do not overload a generator; the can lead to overheating which can create a fire hazard. • Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), especially where electrical equipment is used in or around wet or damp locations. GFCIs shut off power when an electrical current is detected outside normal paths. GFCIs and extension cords with builtin GFCI protection can be purchased at hardware stores, do-it-yourself centers, and other locations that sell electrical equipment. Regardless of GFCI use, electrical equipment used in wet and damp locations must be listed and approved for those conditions. • Make sure a generator is properly grounded and the grounding connections are tight. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for proper grounding methods.

22

1-855-44-TITAN

• Keep a generator dry; do not use it in the rain or wet conditions. If needed, protect a generator with a canopy. Never manipulate a generator’s electrical components if you are wet or standing in water. • Do not use electrical equipment that has been submerged in water. Equipment must be thoroughly dried out and properly evaluated before using. Power off and do not use any electrical equipment that has strange odors or begins smoking.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, toxic gas. Many people have died from CO poisoning because their generator was not adequately ventilated. • Never use a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces such as garages, crawl spaces, and basements. NOTE: Open windows and doors may NOT prevent CO from building up when a generator is located in and enclosed space. • Make sure a generator has 3 to 4 feet of clear space on all sides and above it to ensure adequate ventilation. • Do not use a generator outdoors if its placement near doors, windows, and vents could allow CO to enter and build up in occupied spaces. • If you or others show symptoms of CO poisoning–dizziness, headaches, nausea, tiredness–get to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention. Do not re-enter the area until it is determined to be safe by trained and properly equipped personnel.

Fire Hazards Generators become hot while running and remain hot for long periods after they are stopped. Generator fuels (gasoline, kerosene, etc.) can ignite when spilled on hot engine parts. • Before refueling, shut down the generator and allow it to cool. • Gasoline and other generator fuels should be stored and transported in approved containers that are properly designed and marked for their contents, and vented. • Keep fuel containers away from flame producing and heat generating devices (such as the generator itself, water heaters, cigarettes, lighters and matches). Do not smoke around fuel containers. Escaping vapors and vapors from spilled materials can travel long distances to ignition sources. • Do not store generator fuels in your home. Store fuels away from living areas.

Noise and Vibration Hazards • Generator engines vibrate and create noise. Excessive noise and vibration could cause hearing loss and fatigue that may affect job performance. • Keep portable generators as far away as possible from work areas and gathering spaces. • Wear hearing protection if this is not possible.
