FromFridayMarch14thtoSundayMarch25,2025, The newly reopened Gap Theatre in Wind Gap,PA held a Ray Harryhausen (1920 -2013)filmfestival thatfeatured8ofthefilmsheanimatedutilizingthe stop motion model animation technique he created known as“Dynamation” Theeffectsofthisformof animation is achieved when objectsare physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed framesso that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the seriesofframesisplayed back.Thefilms Mr Harryhausen’s work is associated with Science Fiction,Greek Mythology, and The talesofSinbad thesailorfromtheOneThousandandOneNights
Thefirsttwofilmsthatwerescreenedforthefestival were “Mysterious Island” (1961) which is loosely based upon the 1874 novel by JulesVerne (which wasthe sequeltotwoothernovelsbyVerne,1867's “In Search of the Castaways” and 1870's “Twenty Thousand LeaguesUndertheSeas”)aboutprisoners in the American Civil Warwhoescapeinaballoon andthenfindthemselvesstrandedonaremoteisland populated by giant animals.TheSecondfilmofthe evening was “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963) which was loosely based on the 3rd century BCE Greek epic poem titled, “The Argonautica” by Apollonius Rhodius about Jason and his quest to bring the legendary Golden Fleece of the golden-woolled, winged ram, Chrysomallos, back with him from Colchis so he could be rightfully placedonthethroneofIolcusinThessaly
Three filmswere shown during the seconddayof the festival They were“The7thVoyageofSinbad” (1958),“TheGoldenVoyageofSinbad”(1973),and “SinbadandtheEyeoftheTiger”(1977).Thesource material for the films are taken from the tales containedwithintheOneThousandandOneNights
which is a collection of Middle Eastern folktales compiled in the ArabiclanguageduringtheIslamic GoldenAgeandreflectsthetrendwithintheAbbasid realm of Arab and Muslim sailors exploring the world and braved the IndianOceanduringthe13th century.Althoughthefirstfilmhadmoreincommon with Sinbad’s3rdand5thvoyagesthanthe7th,the remainingtwowereSinbadstoriesinnameonly
The origins of the stories are said to be told by Scheherazade who married a king who ruled an empire that stretched from Persia to India named Shahryār. He had his first wife killed due to her infidelityandbegantomarryasuccessionofvirgins only to execute each one the next morning before she had a chance to dishonorhim On the night of theirmarriage,Scheherazadebegantotellthekinga tale but didn't end it.The king, curiousabout how the story ends, postponed herexecution inorderto heartheconclusion.Thissupposedlywentonforone thousandandonenights
The final evening of the festival presented two science fiction monsterfilmsthat Ray Harryhausen made during the 1950s.“It Came fromBeneaththe Sea” (1955) which was about a giant octopus attacking San Francisco and “20 Million Milesto Earth” (1957) which was about an American spaceship returning from the planet Venus that crashesinto the sea nearSicily with a creaturethat rapidly growsto giganticsizeinEarth'satmosphere and terrifiesthe citizensofRome. The finalfilmof the evening and festival was ‘Clash ofthe Titans’ (1981)and waslooselybasedontheGreekmythof Perseus It featured performances by Harry Hamlin, Judi Bowker,BurgessMeredith,MaggieSmith, and Laurence Olivier The film was Ray Harryhausen’s lastfilmasheretiredsoonafterwards.
The film festival proved to be an enjoyable experience as it provided an opportunity to watch the cinematic works on a large theatrical screen in 35mmfilmstock Thisaddedafeelingofcinematic nostalgia to the experience that israrely felt when watching films made before the digital revolution Also, the stop motion animation artistry of Ray Harryhausen being presented on the big screen isa treatthatdefiesexposition.Itwasjustfun.
