Marking ten years since her untimely death, the Design Museum plays tribute to Amy Winehouse with her first major retrospective. ou might not recognise Hannah-John Kamen’s name, but the chances are you will know her face. The 32-year-old’s CV would be the envy of any actor; film roles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens; Tomb Raider; Ready Player One and Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp. Plus, TV appearances in Black Mirror, Game of Thrones and 2020 Netflix hit, The Stranger, amongst others. And there’s more to come – next month sees her starring as Jill Valentine in Constantin Films’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, while Unwelcome, in which she stars opposite Douglas Booth, is set for release early next year. And it has been announced that she will be playing the title role in Millennium’s comic book fantasy hero feature Red Sonja. There was much to discuss when we sat down to chat.
quite believe it! I really felt I connected with the script and what Red Sonja represents. All of the training and prep is underway: I find it’s always the most exciting part to be able to create, articulate, discover and explore who your character is, what they represent and how they came into being. This role really gave me the freedom to voice my own interpretation of Red Sonja, and when you have the opportunity to do that, you have to grab it by the horns.
We’ll be seeing you next in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, can you tell us a little about the film and why you wanted to be involved? Well, it’s based on the hugely popular video game series: this adaptation is the story of how it all begins, and all I can say to fans of the game and genre is that it won’t disappoint! I think Johannes (Roberts, the director), has done an amazing job – it’s almost identical to the games, but with a retro twist. It’s set in the 90s, which was so exciting and nostalgic for me, because I’m a 90s kid. So, that appealed, plus I’m a fan of the games myself, and a big fan of zombie movies, so I was definitely nerding out on set. I just knew from the outset that I was going to have way too much fun with this project. You’ve also got Unwelcome coming up in the new year, can you tell us about that? It’s definitely a juxtaposition from my role as Jill Valentine. Unwelcome is a story about a couple who go through a traumatic event and decide to start a new life in Ireland, but all is not as it seems, and the peace and quiet they were looking for and craving isn’t as easily found as they had hoped. It was a really different project for me – definitely not a role I have ever taken on before. It’s such a raw piece of work and I definitely let my imagination go – it was wonderful to really immerse myself and feel the freedom to allow my performance to go a distance that was unknown to me. Also, working alongside Douglas Booth was such a pleasure: there was a great and easy chemistry that flowed between us so naturally. Being in scenes with him felt like playing a game of ping pong – batting the energy back and forth – which was so fun. I’m really excited for this movie to come out and for everyone to see it. In other news, you’ve also been announced as Red Sonja – has work started on the film? It is such an honour to be able to talk about this now. I still can’t

You’ve made a name for yourself starring in fantasy roles – what is the appeal of this type of project? I think, for me it’s a reflection of my childhood and my imagination! I love, love, love fantasy because the possibilities are endless – I can really let go and explore or escape the laws of reality. Also, the hair, make up and costume possibilities are so much more elevated and creative – you can push boundaries that you wouldn’t get to do when portraying a character in a more mainstream genre. Don’t get me wrong, working in the real world is badass, too. I find that whether I’m working on a fantasy project, or one that’s grounded in reality, there’s always a discourse of politics, economy, hierarchy, currency… the same problems exist. So, themes are really important to me, as they enable you to tell stories, to interpret and perform. Your CV is a real mix of film and TV, do you have a favourite medium, or do you think the difference between them is narrowing? I find film and TV are both different and similar at the same time. Filming a series, for example, you have more episodes to tell the story, so the formula of storytelling is different to that used in a two-hour film, where there has to be a definitive beginning, middle and end. I guess, for me they both have their pros and I haven’t really experienced any cons. What attracted you to acting and what would you have done if not this? I can honestly say that I can’t ever remember a time where I didn’t want to act or perform. It’s ingrained in me, and growing up there was never any other option, because nothing else made me happy. I do what I do because it’s fun, it’s empowering, and it makes me feel alive. I pinch myself some days because I get to do what I really want to do with my life. The passion only grows and grows with each role, because I learn something new every time, gain something from each job. Being on set and in another character makes me feel limitless. How did your break in Whitechapel come about? Whitechapel was my first ever TV break, I was still at drama school, and I was doing my last show. I had already signed with my agent, Scott Marshall, and they really got the ball rolling

“I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE FANTASY, BECAUSE THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS – I CAN REALLY LET GO AND EXPLORE OR ESCAPE THE LAWS OF REALITY.” with auditions. I remember, when I got the job, I arrived on set, and I was like a rabbit in headlights. There was so much that I didn’t know, including that I didn’t have to eat the set food in the dress rehearsal, which I obviously did! It was definitely a learning curve for my TV – and later film – career. What has been your best, or worst experience at audition? I think my best experience in an audition was when I met THE Steven Spielberg for Ready Player One. I was so nervous beforehand: I went to the bathroom to call my dad. He told me to look in the mirror, say my name out loud and breathe in deeply – so I did, and suddenly I was ready. It turned out to be just a wonderful, fun meeting – Steven wanted to get to know me and asked lots of questions about my life. We talked in-depth about the role, and it all went by so quickly – then he told me to stand up and said there and then: “You’ve got the job”. I was screaming inside; I couldn’t believe it. So yes, that was definitely the best, best, best experience and audition of my life. I will never forget it. What has been your favourite project to date? I can’t really say, because I have had the honour of playing so many different and wonderful characters. I instantly think of Ready Player One, Ant-Man and the Wasp… Of playing Wilhelmina ‘Helm’ Watson in Brave New World, Jill Valentine in Resident Evil and Maya in Unwelcome… There’s just so many that it is impossible to choose between them. What I can say is that I have no regrets.
What would be your dream role? Each character has given, and offered me so much – and they are all so different. This is what I love about my career: every day, every project and every character is so different. That’s why even the idea of that dream role doesn’t exist to me, because every role is surprising, shocking, new and empowering. There is also the unknown – where a role you might not have thought could have impacted you, might have changed your life and become really special. Also, it’s not just about the role, it’s the family you join. The director, the production team and your co-stars all make your experience unique. They complete it. You were named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow in 2016 – how did that feel and how do you think it has impacted your career since? It was an absolute honour. I felt so humbled and valued as an actor, and also recognised for my work. It was an emotional moment. I can say from the bottom of my heart that that moment is something that will stick with me forever. I think it elevated my self-worth, it played a huge part in building my confidence and helping me grow in this industry… I felt like I could conquer anything after that. Who inspires you? My mum was my biggest inspiration. She was a warrior, a fighter; beautiful, intelligent, honest, unapologetically funny, stylish, unique and strong. She had a symbolic class about her, and she was my hero. If I can be even half the woman she was, then I’m a happy camper. She gave me the best advice, which was that no matter what life throws me, no matter how high or how low it gets, to always stay grounded and never lose sight of who I am. What do you consider to be your biggest achievement and why? My biggest achievement? I guess self-achievement is a process, but I am proud of the roles I have played. And I am proud of my survival at times when things were tough. But I do have to say – buying my house in London is something that makes my soul smile, and that’s because it is mine and mine alone. I worked hard for my bricks and mortar, and I feel all grown up when I think about how I have achieved it through that hard work. Can you tell us a little bit about what you love about living in London? People always ask me if I am going to make the move to LA and I always say no, because no matter where I film in the world, I can’t wait to go home to London. I love the pace, I love the culture, I love the hustle and bustle and the raw edges. I love how you can really be yourself in London – there is a freedom it brings me, for sure. What are you looking forward to in 2022? I am looking forward to the projects I have lined up next year, but after the pandemic and experiencing a traumatic loss last year, life has taught me that we really can’t predict or expect anything. So don’t waste time looking too far into the future, because you’ll be missing the present. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be released in cinemas on 3 December

Thousands of products claim to be better for the environment and your skin, but are they all as good as they seem? While we might not have all the answers, make up artist Justine Jenkins, a regular on Fabric cover shoots, probably has most of them. This month sees the release of her new book, Sustainable Beauty (16 November, White Lion Publishing, £18). Packed with tips and tricks, plus 20 step-by-step recipes for beauty essentials (including DIY hydrating serums and superfood face masks), it illustrates how small changes in habit can result in a more sustainable beauty routine. Here, Justine offers us a taste of what to expect, with her recipe for a nourishing oat face mask. She says: “Oats are an effective alternative to soaps and detergents, so are great for nourishing tired skin and wonderful in a face mask like this one. Oats contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.”

Hair extensions by Daniel Galvin I have spent what feels like a lifetime (and a small fortune) attempting to inject more volume into my oh-so-fine hair, sampling all manner of supplements and specialist products, all to no avail. In fact, as time passes, things seem to be getting worse: much to my horror, while looking at photographs from only a few years ago recently, I realised my hair has actually got thinner! Thanks a bunch, hormones. A good friend (and fellow sufferer) recently decided to take action, delving into the glamorous world of extensions. I’d only ever considered this as a means of adding length, assuming that the process would damage what little hair I have. Her experience proved me wrong. Coveting my friend’s now voluminous hair, I was determined to give it a go myself. Feeling somewhat trepidatious (what if they felt uncomfortable, or made things look worse), I headed to Selfridges to meet Becky Lennon, head of the extensions team at Daniel Galvin. I was in safe hands: she’s won Hair Extension Specialist of the Year at the London Hair & Beauty Awards and has been perfecting the art of extensions for years.
During the initial consultation we discussed what I wanted to achieve (more hair!) and Becky colourmatched me with some hair (all ethically sourced from India). The process itself is straightforward – Becky takes small pieces of the hair which are infused with keratin on the ends, and uses heat to secure them to my own hair, leaving a small gap between the scalp and the bond to avoid any feeling of tightness and to ensure that the hair can move in a natural fashion. She then cuts the new hair in to match my current length, and voila… I have thicker hair and I can barely feel where the extensions have been placed, let alone see them. The one thing that takes a little getting used to is when I touch my hair: I’m so used to ‘zhuzhing’ it up with my hands but I can no longer do that without accidentally pulling on the extensions, which does smart a little. Becky sends me away with some sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, along with advice on how to look after my new do. In particular, making sure to brush regularly, so that the extensions don’t get matted. After her pep talk I walk away feeling confident that I won’t wake up to find the extensions lying forlornly on my pillow. I’ve had so many compliments since my appointment; people are genuinely amazed at how natural the extensions look, and my new volume has given me so much more confidence to wear my hair with pride. I’ll need to have them changed after two to three months, but it’s a price I am more than willing to pay. BP

It’s true, Leicester Square doesn’t always conjure up the classiest of mental images, but if anywhere can challenge that preconception, it is The Londoner. Edwardian Hotels London worked with architecture studio Woods Bagot, engineers Arup Associates, interior designers Yabu Pushelberg and artist Ian Monroe to bring their striking concept to life. Dubbed the world’s first super boutique hotel, it was set to open in spring 2020… Things got in the way, inevitably, and it eventually opened to great fanfare this September, promising – thanks to a smorgasbord of concept F&B offerings – something for both locals and visitors alike. Its signature restaurant is Whitcomb’s, where Executive Head Chef Shailesh Deshmukh’s focus is on simple, elegant French Mediterranean cuisine, prepared using carefully selected quality ingredients. All-day dining is on offer here, but we visit as daylight fades and the West End lights begin to twinkle. The space is suitably glamorous, with a grand marble table at its centre, soft as butter leather seating and modern art adorning the walls. Above us, a whimsical metal sculpture by artist Shida Salehi floats from the ceiling. We sip on an Arrivée cocktail as we peruse the menu. A blend of Noilly Prat and Lillet Blanc with prosecco, orange bitters and elderflower and melon cordial, it is light and refreshing. Like long forgotten sunshine in a glass. Our friendly waiter talks us through the menu concept, advising on quantities and giving his personal recommendations (dedicated to the job, he has tasted everything, and confirms that it is all excellent). This is, he says, food for sharing – my favourite kind.

We begin with ‘Fromage au Four’: a red-hot skillet of baked Gruyère and Emmental with Cognac, crispy pancetta and Dijon mustard, into which we hungrily dig chunks of artisan French bread. Strings of cheese hang from our chins – it is delicious, but categorically not first date food. A divinely palate cleansing tuna tartare with caviar and confit egg yolk follows. It is a standout. Encouraged to try one of the Pâtes Maison, we share a dish of agnolotti with creamy cheese béchamel and crispy sage butter, before moving on to our main dish. We have opted for the filet mignon, and we are not disappointed. Exquisitely tender, the steak is topped with chanterelle and an aged Parmesan crème. Impossibly tasty, garlicky French beans and frites with rosemary and sea salt are the perfect accompaniment. The latter are like no frites we have ever tasted; rectangular sheets of the crispiest potato – I have been dreaming about them ever since. Amazingly, and fortuitously, we have room for dessert. We choose warm sugar-coated beignets. The bite-sized treats are served with a trio of dipping sauces (rich dark chocolate, a Christmassy spiced orange and a glorious dulce de leche) and are seriously naughty. Forget every preconception you have about hotel dining: The Londoner set out to shape the legacy of the West End, and if Whitcomb’s is anything to go by, it is likely to succeed. Elena Silcock’s Kitchari Quick, fulfilling meals are the order of the day as the nights draw in and the temperature drops. Think soups, stews and warming curries. Looking for foodie inspiration, we turned to chef and food stylist Elena Silcock, who releases her new book, ONE: One Pan, One Hob, One Meal (4 November, Hamlyn, £16.99), this month. A home-cook’s holy grail of speedy suppers, it is packed with delicious dishes. Here, she shares a recipe that is quite simply, sunshine in a bowl. She says: “This is a famous Ayurvedic dish. It’s so soothing, it feels like you’re hugging your soul when you eat it. My top tip would be to make it on Sunday and make enough to eat it again a day later when the flavours have developed and that Monday feeling has kicked in.”
INGREDIENTS 2 tbsps coconut, sunflower or olive oil | 2 courgettes, chopped into 2 cm chunks | thumb-sized piece of fresh root ginger, grated | 1 tsp mustard seeds | 1 tsp fennel seeds | 1 tsp ground coriander | 2 tsp ground turmeric | 150g brown rice | 150g split yellow peas (or use red or green lentils) | 1.2 litres vegetable stock | 300g spinach | 150ml coconut yogurt | 1 lemon or lime, ½ juiced and ½ cut into wedges | sea salt and freshly ground black pepper | freshly chopped coriander, to serve METHOD 1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a high heat. Add the
courgettes, along with a big pinch of salt, and fry for around 8 minutes until lightly charred and collapsing. Add the ginger, followed by the spices, and stir so that everything is well coated. Fry for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the brown rice and split yellow peas to the pan and stir again. 2. Pour in the vegetable stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Season, then cover with a lid and cook for 40–45 minutes, stirring regularly. At this point, the rice and the split yellow peas should both be soft. If they still have a little bite, cook for another 5–10 minutes – you want them to be completely soft, so that this dish is very easy to digest. If the mixture starts to catch on the base of the pan, add a splash of water. 3. Stir through the spinach, along with a big spoonful of the coconut yogurt. Add the lemon or lime juice and season well. Add a splash of water if it seems a little thick. 4. Spoon into 4 bowls and top each one with a spoonful of coconut yogurt. Scatter with the coriander and serve with the lemon or lime wedges.

has to be coffee and orange rub chicken with tomato mashwiya (which literally means roasted salad). It sounds like an unusual combination, but trust me, it works really well. What do you cook on your days off? Most recently, I have been testing new ideas for our new wine bar and restaurant, The Barbary Next Door, as well as cooking some of my most loved childhood dishes for my family. Over the last few weeks we’ve had everything from schnitzel with potato
salad to goulash, shakshuka, burekas, and my all-time favourite, roast chicken. Best meal you’ve ever eaten? I am torn between Viajante by Nuno Mendes or my mentor from home, Meir Adoni. Everything he touches is so delicious. Guilty food pleasure Hamburgers or ice cream. Or both! If you could cook for anyone, who? Niklas Ekstedt. It would be great to not only cook
for him but have a conversation about food and his style of cooking, which I really admire. What should no kitchen be without? Chefs with passion – this is such a vital ingredient in the kitchen as it increases productivity and drive within the workplace. Roaring into Highgate Proving, once again, that north Londoners are the luckiest of Capital dwellers,, Highgate recently welcomed a new restaurant to the neighbourhood – and early reports are excellent. Combining classic cars with an impressive modern art collection and an exquisite Mediterranean menu, The Engine Rooms is a totally unique concept. It is the brainchild of Paul Michaels, owner of the Hexagon classic car dealership. Last year saw Paul – in collaboration with wine expert Bert Blaize – take his first steps into the world of food and drink, with the launch of Bottles ‘N’ Jars, an artisanal deli and fine wine merchant on the site of Hexagon’s Great North Road showroom. Following on from this success, it comes as no surprise that the new offering has received glowing reviews. Paul’s vision for the restaurant was to create a simple, regularly changing menu that encapsulated the joy of Mediterranean dining whilst using the best of seasonal British ingredients. It has been brought to life by head chef James Harrison, formerly of Taka Marylebone, whose all-day menu has a specific focus on fish and vegetables. Think grey mullet ceviche with confit tomato dressing, cured egg yolk, samphire, and pistachio. The setting is equally special, interior design was overseen by Paul’s late wife, whose art collection is on display throughout. An intimate mezzanine dining level is complemented by a heated courtyard area with electric canopy roof, allowing for all year dining. Toast of the town With king of cool Idris Elba at the helm, there’s no doubt that the newest bar on the Kings Cross scene will be one to watch. The world-renowned actor, producer and DJ teamed up with founder of Connaught Wine Cellars, David Farber to launch the Porte Noire Champagne and rosé brand back in 2018, and now the pair have opened their first bar, tasting rooms and shop of the same name. Located at the foot of the stunning Gasholders, opposite Regent’s Canal Towpath at Coal Drops Yard, the new bar and shop is a celebration of the brand, as well as being home to an extensive selection of exceptional international wines in around
800 bins. Curated by David, this ranges from some of the best and rarest bottles to a more accessible selection of wines on tap to suit all tastes. Most bottles are available to purchase in the shop that sits by the entrance to the bar. A food menu is split into tasters, bar snacks, starters, mains and desserts, encompassing everything from artisanal cheese and charcuterie to brasserie-style dishes like the delicious slow cooked beef cheek, pommes purée and leek persillade. A GREEK ODYSSEY
Spectacular views, luxurious lodgings and culinary excellence make for the perfect post-pandemic travel experience WORDS by ALI HOWARD
The hotel, which opened earlier this year, boasts an enviable position, hugging the cliff face above Karavostasi beach and the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea
P
ost-pandemic overseas travel had reached nearmythical status in my mind, so you can only imagine the thrill on finally hearing the words, “cabin crew, please prepare for take-off”. We’re leaving London behind at the crack of dawn, headed for a luxurious break at MarBella Elix, the third property to be added to the MarBella Collection portfolio, and the first for the brand outside of Corfu. Mainland Greece, to my shame, had thus far eluded my own portfolio of Places I’ve Been so I’m glad to be making up for it with a stay in this previously undiscovered area – about an hour’s drive from Preveza airport – and one, I’m told, of astounding natural beauty. Indeed, the hotel is seemingly carved into the verdant mountainside above the golden stretch of Karavostasi beach. The handiwork of Dimitris Thomopoulos and Konstantinos Kydoniatis, the property is designed to respectfully take second place to Mother Nature’s own architectural sass, and in doing so, guests are treated to breath-taking, uninterrupted views of the Ionian Sea. Cleverly, every one of the hotel’s 146 guest rooms and suites, all forward-facing, comes with a dreamy seascape, with Corfu to the right, Paxos straight ahead, and the sparkling turquoise water in between. We are at one with the elements here. But this is a property of pleasing contrasts and as much as I’m floored by the natural surroundings, I’m also impressed with the hotel’s dramatic, glamorous interior. The first of many pinch-

myself moments comes in the capacious, modern, gallery-like lobby, welcome Bellini in hand, as I take in the cool, contemporary environment. The clean lines are as crisp as the sea, but stark minimalism here is offset with thoughtfully placed objets and artworks celebrating the area’s rich cultural heritage and its history during the Ottoman occupation. Two jewel-hued framed kaftans provide a vibrant colour pop against the otherwise neutral décor, while a huge, ornate and exotic hammered brass chandelier hangs overhead. It is a deft mix of old and new. In a hotel in which every guest room is a room with a view, expectations are high, but even then I can’t help but gasp at the stunning blue-meets-blue horizon in front of me. With its calming, sandy décor – think blonde rattan, ecru linen and rustic wood – the suite is designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural palette, making it impossible not to relax in. There’s an enormous, inviting bed complete with snowy white sheets to dive into, too, but that can wait, the turquoise sea is calling me. Unlike some luxury resorts in which you can find yourself on the beach in seconds, here, up on the mountain, you have to put in a little bit of work: choose the seriously thigh-toning stone steps if you didn’t manage to hit the gym pre-breakfast, or plump for the far more civilised funicular, sit back, and take in the spectacular views as you slowly descend. A restorative swim in the choppy, warm sea proves nothing short of spiritual, while back

cooking class centred around feta and traditional Greek dishes with MarBella head chef Vasilis Moschotas. Rainy days here are made for cheese and wine – and baklava making, of which we devour every sweet, nutty layer. We are able to visit the islands on the following day, albeit downsized to a (still luxurious) speedboat. We soon discover that what the vessel lacks in deck size it more than makes up for in fun. Before we know it, we’re clinging on for dear life as we hurtle across the Ionian Sea, club tunes from the captain on full blast. It feels impossibly glamorous – and just the right level of dangerous. We take in the sights of the picturesque ports, explore the intricate caves – in which no cumbersome catamaran would fit – and find ourselves jumping into those sparkling turquoise waters before flopping onto the softest sandy beach imaginable. We make the most of our final lunch with a feast of traditional Greek fare at Paxos’ Genesis restaurant, before racing back to pack for the airport. As a final hurrah, we convince the captain to indulge us with a blast of Mamma Mia!. It is beyond cheesy, but after an 18-month travel drought, it proves a fitting soundtrack to our longed-for Greek escapades. Brits abroad, eh? It doesn’t look like that wishing tree is working. I’d asked for it to formulate a cunning plan for me to stay on in Greece. But in the here and now, I resolve to drink in and bank the sights and sounds, the salty waves, the beating sun and the belting cries of Agnetha and Anni-Frid. I haven’t felt so alive in years – and I’m sure I can live off this feeling for a while, even after the tan fades… My my, Greece, I could never let you go. on the beach, I’m served a chilled Aperol spritz, straight to my lounger, feeling thoroughly spoilt on the hotel’s Ultra All-Inclusive package. Indeed, all the facilities you could want for are here on the beach, upon which you could easily lose a day. Vehicles for the serious (jet ski) and not-so-serious (plastic pedalo with slide) water sportspeople are available to hire, while the Azure beach restaurant guarantees a laid-back, lengthy lunch between dips. A bona fide destination for foodies, the hotel boasts four restaurants and three bars with a comprehensive offering from the casual to the haute cuisine. Back on the main site, there’s light bites to be had poolside at the Indigo restaurant, while modern Mediterranean fare is up for grabs at Saffron. If you’re a fan of the hotel buffet, you’ll be like a child in a sweet shop here – albeit one wearing Covid-safe plastic gloves as you fill your plate with a glut of culinary delights. I’m relieved to learn the hotel buffet breakfast is still very much A Thing in a world with Covid, and on my first morning, cannot resist a boastful snap of my smoked salmon and scrambled egg, complete with wow-worthy vista, to send home. As part of the hotel’s exclusive Dine Out programme, we’re treated to a slap-up meal at a local taverna and have our fill of delicious traditional Greek foodstuffs. But the real treat comes at the hotel’s elegant Pearl restaurant. We’ve timed our trip to coincide with the brand’s inaugural culinary series, Greek Chefs Abroad, and we have celebrated global chef Yiannis Kioroglou, together with Alexandros Ioannou of Katogi Averoff Winery, at our disposal for an exclusive pop-up tasting dinner. Relishing our way through ten exquisitely crafted courses with wine pairings, including Fleurs de Côte d’Azur (zucchini blossoms in tomato sauce), Langoustine in the Forest (with raspberry and rosemary sauce), and Black Iberico (with black trumpets and Porto sauce), we are wined and dined to the nines. Just as MarBella Elix marries its rugged landscape with sleek architecture, so it offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Sunny mornings lolling on giant beanbags by the pool are met with afternoon hikes to explore the surrounding countryside. Sharing his Victorian Hampstead home with wife and collaborator, Daniele Mah, this tech business leader-turned renowned visual artist is happiest in his home studio – a far cry from the boardroom

Philipp shares his Victorian home with his wife Daniele; they believe that art brings a house to life
What do you usually look for when buying a home? Character and design. Daniele and I are open to classical and contemporary architecture, we love both equally. Space is also an important factor as we work from home. It allows me greatest working flexibility without having to lose time travelling somewhere. A good location and green space is also essential. We both run, so being near the Heath is lovely. Did you do anything structurally when you moved in? It’s a Victorian property, built in 1882, and part of The Mansfield Estate. Originally it would have been a four-bed house. We knocked through two bedrooms for my studio on the first floor. The previous owners had been there for over 30 years, so it was in need of a full overhaul. It ended up being much more of an overhaul than we first thought, though – these old houses with walls and ceilings made of good old-fashioned lath and plaster don’t take too well to being touched! Taking a wall down here and there ended up with every wall and ceiling collapsing – apart from a tiny part in the entrance – which we kept as a cheeky memento. So it pretty much ended up being an empty shell – and a great blank canvas! Visual art plays a central role, can you talk me through a few of your favourite pieces? We have a few Impressionist works but mostly our walls are adorned by my paintings and some of my wife’s photographs. I love having my bronze sculptures around, so having the space for them is a luxury. We also rotate works at least once a year, when paintings are sold or new ones created. How does a period residential property lend itself to displaying art? It’s great, in fact, in the old days, when there was no central heating, walls were often covered with paintings and tapestries to help conserve the heat. With a Victorian property you get these lovely high ceilings and big sash windows, so every wall in our house has art on it – it brings a house to life! People need more art in their homes, I’m often puzzled by how little art people have on their walls, it seems like it’s the last thing they needed to do and have forgotten. When we have to take paintings away for exhibitions, or because they’ve been sold, the void is really felt.

Tell me about your furniture choices Luckily my wife and I rarely disagree when it comes to furniture and how we want our homes to look. I would say she’s a bit more daring than I am, so we have a good balance. We both have a love for classical, even Baroque here and there, and a good mix of vintage ’60s and ’70s pieces. The blend and mixture of periods and styles always make an interior more interesting, we can’t imagine just having a universal overall style. My wife is half Chinese, so we have some Asian pieces in the house, too, and they all work harmoniously with the artworks.
Philipp’s paintings and sculptures, along with Daniele’s photography are on display throughout the house. The pair regularly rotate the works as things are sold and new pieces created
Do you have any favourite interiors brands? Most of our furniture is vintage in one way or another, so we don’t have a particular brand of furniture that is a go-to. We have spent rather a lot of time on our favourite platform, 1stDibs, which is where we get most things from. Which is your favourite room? That’s obviously my studio. It’s where I spend most of my awake time. It has windows on both sides, a heavy-duty wood floor, and high walls to hang my art. Tell me what you love about living in Hampstead The Heath is probably the highlight. We have two dogs, Charles and Henry, so having that nearby is great, it’s such a sprawling big park and, shockingly, we only discovered the Pergola gardens not that long ago. Hampstead also has a lovely village atmosphere and it hasn’t been overwhelmed by too many high street brands, so it still feels authentic. Can you tell me about your latest projects? I’m working on my The Last Faust project, creating large scale oil paintings and bronze sculptures. I also finished dubbing the feature film The Last Faust (released in 2019 starring Steven Berkoff and Martin Hancock) into German. I’ll premiere it in Germany in 2022. Lastly, I am starting to prepare a theatre version of my film. Faust functions for me as a way of retelling my understandings of the world as its leaders. philipphumm.art

Why teaching knowledge is essential in preparing our young people for the future job market
very few years, the World Economic Forum publishes a list of the top skills that employers are looking for in the next generation of employees. And with the effects of the pandemic and increasing adoption of technology transforming the jobs of tomorrow, the key competencies that our children will need to succeed in the 2025 job market are complex problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity*. “Our young people need to be able to identify, analyse and evaluate situations, ideas and information in order to formulate responses, and they need to be able to imagine and devise new ways of addressing problems,” says James Stenning, Headteacher of the high-achieving North Bridge House (NBH) Prep School in Regent’s Park. A great many schools are taking the importance of this on board and have modified and adapted their curricula accordingly. For example, at the XP School in Doncaster, character and creativity are as important as qualifications. Pupils do not stay in their classrooms during lessons; they carry out research on their laptops in open-plan common rooms rather than sitting in rows at desks. The traditional curriculum has been torn up. There are no Maths, English, Science, History or Geography lessons. Instead, the children learn through academic ‘expeditions’ and at the end of each academic expedition, they create a product – which could be a film or book, a mural or a documentary. “However, it is essential that the teaching of these skills does not come at the expense of knowledge,” says the NBH Prep School Head. “Skills and knowledge are not mutually exclusive, and any curriculum model which marginalises knowledge will not succeed. We all need cultural literacy. An understanding of facts, ideas and knowledge is needed in order to operate, thrive and succeed in a free and democratic society,” he continues. The educationalist E.D. Hirsch believes that the key 21st century skills of creativity, complex problem-solving, and critical thinking are functions of the breadth and depth of our knowledge; “Knowledge begets more knowledge, so there is a multiplier effect”. Furthermore, a report for the educational charity, The Sutton Trust points to subject knowledge as one of the most important characteristics for teachers in achieving strong outcomes for their students.

Upon joining NBH Prep School in 2018 and progressing from Deputy Head at NBH Senior Canonbury, Headteacher James Stenning noticed that children’s general knowledge was often lacking – even amongst the brightest pupils – many of whom go on to secure places at the country’s top secondary schools. “Once, in a discussion about elections, a pupil asked me if you could vote for the Queen. Others thought that members of the House of Lords were elected. An understanding of our democratic institutions is important; if children’s knowledge about them is uncertain it will be much easier to mislead and manipulate them,” says the Head and teacher of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE). To address this, the school introduced a General Studies course in Year 5, with pupils studying modules in Politics, Philosophy, Economics, Film Studies and Art History. In Years 7 and 8 every pupil studies PPE. With the younger pupils in Years 3 and 4, NBH Prep School has re-designed how it teaches Geography, History and Science. “Our curriculum is grounded in the strongest evidence about how children learn and retain knowledge in the long-term – focusing in particular on research from cognitive science,” says the Head. Rather than study humanities as a ‘topic’ (as many primary schools do), NBH teaches Geography and History as discrete subjects, and the curriculum is “knowledge-rich” – detailing exactly what needs to be learnt. “We teach content to be remembered, not just encountered. Rather than simply ‘doing the Romans’, NBH Prep pupils will learn and understand key terminology relating to that period. They will not only learn who Julius Caesar was, but they will be able to place him and the Romans in time in relation to Jesus Christ and 1066,” explains Headteacher James. While the children still get the opportunity to enjoy dressing up as Romans and Greek Gods, by the time they reach Year 6, they are competently answering questions such as: ‘Civil disobedience was more important than legislation during the civil rights movement’ – to what extent do you agree? A common criticism of knowledge-rich curricula is that the power of technology and having Google at our fingertips renders knowledge less important. “Technologies are indeed transformative,” agrees James. “However, problem-solving is about drawing on what we have committed to our long-term memory. We can’t outsource memory to the internet! And we need knowledge in our longterm memory because our working memory is limited. The more knowledge we have, the more problems we can solve.” And the power of knowledge is certainly still highly regarded by top universities such as Cambridge, where candidates are required to show how they can apply their existing knowledge and skills to unfamiliar problems at interview. “Ultimately, at North Bridge House Prep School, we strive to prepare our children for the jobs of tomorrow – the jobs they will pioneer and redefine – and for every stage of their academic journey along the way,” concludes James Stenning, Headteacher.

Starting a new venture in the middle of a pandemic has certainly been a challenge, but I couldn’t think of a better place to do it than here in St. John’s Wood. We have been welcomed by all the local businesses and the community: it is a treat to be here, even during such turbulent times. I always start the day in AT feast, my family brasserie, where they serve delicious healthy and sustainable meals all day (but I have a real soft spot for the breakfasts.) My go-to is the collagen oat milk cappuccino – I can’t function without it. It’s such a vibrant high street, and there are some real characters around, so if I have the time I’ll sit outside and people-watch while I eat. There is a gorgeous florist just round the corner called Jess Flowers; Ronan there is lovely. They provide us with beautiful flowers for the restaurant and the members’ club upstairs. I’ll often pop my head in to see what’s new and look at their displays. Flowers can make any day a good day! Luckily, the local businesses understand the multi-tasking pressures of being a founder, so I am grateful for friends such as the team at Ozzy Hair Design, who squeeze in a manicure and pedicure at the same time as giving me a haircut. They’ll
often set me in rollers and then let me skip off for a meeting with the rollers still in place! At lunchtimes, I like to walk some food down to St. John’s Wood Church Grounds. It’s such a lovely space and gives me a chance to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. I love the giant chess board and outdoor table tennis tables, and it’s fun to see the world famous Lord’s Cricket Ground looming in the background. In the afternoons I’m usually in our family members’ club and nursery space, b_together. Spread over four floors (it’s quite special to have all of this space on the high street) we are a total haven for families, where they can truly b_together, which is especially important after nearly two years of so much separation. If it’s been a long day I’ll stop by Nicolas to pick up some wine and Panzer’s deli for dinner to go. I can’t wait for life to settle down a bit so I can head back to Core Collective for classes and hit up FaceGym for a hell of a facial. There really is no end of choice here on the high street!

The magic of metacognition
A
child getting excited about something they find hard to learn may sound counterintuitive. But at King Alfred School in Hampstead, it’s a sign that their teaching strategies are working. “We introduce the characteristics of effective learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage,” says head of lower school Karen Thomas. “So our children are used to describing and embracing what it feels like to be ‘stuck’. And they know that it means they’re learning.” Learning about learning, or ‘metacognition’, is an important aspect of the school’s layered approach. Its teachers think not only about what they want the children to know, but how they want them to be (curious, resilient, and so on). They then decide the skills they want the children to apply, like enquiry or self-management. The metacognitive part is about bringing the children’s attention to the skills they’re using and the attributes they’re developing. “They become aware of what they’re doing, and can then use
those strategies more purposefully when we’re not guiding them,” explains Karen. Children of all ages can benefit, too: “We talk to children as young as four about executive functioning skills like organisation, in basic terms. We then build on that in all year groups. Using the shared language of transferable skills is extremely powerful.” While the concept of metacognition can be a little hard to grasp, the results aren’t. The researcher John Hattie ranks metacognitive strategies as among the most effective teaching interventions. And according to the Education Endowment Foundation, getting children to think about how they learn can accelerate their progress by seven months. King Alfred’s own results bear this out: after a difficult period post-lockdown, its end-of-year assessments have exceeded expectations. So how can parents support this approach? Karen advises not getting fixed on the product of the learning, but asking about the process instead. For example: “Who did you notice listened well today in school? How creative were you? And what was the most important learning for you?” If they reply, “I understand where I am now and what I could do next,” then you know metacognition is working its magic. The teaching team have been simply amazing throughout this terrible period. When teaching moved online, they went beyond the call of duty to ensure the children (and parents) were fully supported and not over-burdened by Zoom. We listened to what the parents wanted, and delivered – our 7+ results were among the best we’ve ever had. What advice would you give to parents looking for a school? Always visit on a normal day. On a tour, focus on observing the children: do they look happy? And trust your instincts. What did it ‘feel’ like being there?
