Despite the dreaded credit crunch – we are pleased to present you also in 2009 a late-breaking Wakeboarder Europe Magazine! Not a bit of depression, summer is coming in big steps what is for us the sign of getting the wakeboards out of the cellar to celebrate the new season! Solely the car-scrap bonus would be a reasonable concept for your old Boards – we rather present you already a lot of the latest stuff made in the so-called dream fabric of watersport! Even if the global worst case scenario is hovering above our heads, that would not be a motive for singing the blues. Cause we know the way out of any crisis: Grab the current magazine, go to a lake or a beer garden and get excited about its cool interviews and crazy stories! Well then, cheers! The Wakeboarder Europe Magazine wishes you a hell of a good time during the reading!

TURNCABLE!

In their logo they have the Bavarian lions. You could think that this is about some traditional thing. But why would you find it here in the WEM? Truth is, it’s all about a new cable. Where? In Thannhausen. There will soon be a fantastic spot and we are excited about what we will find here this summer. Anyway, traditional is not the right word in this context - this is about breaking new ground. Christoph Schwarz and Roy Thormann, the planners, constructors and operators teamed up with their architect, Martin Atzinger, and thought about how a perfect spot should look like. The plans are reason

enough for great expectations. It’s no exaggeration to say that Thannhausen will soon be a new wakeboarding mecca. Of course, up to now nobody knows about Thannhausen. It’s just a small village southwest of Augsburg. Concerning our sport, this will change abruptly this summer. A new Turncable is about to be opened here and the name says it all: In a former quarry pond there will be two lifts starting from a platform; one to the right and one to the left! Here we go regular footers! The main building is also well-thoughtout. There will be a big sun terrace, a shop,

a restaurant, sanitary facilities and last but not least a guest room. So people who come from far away will have the possibility to book a room, wake up at the lake just like the locals and have a good time at this spot. Each of the two lifts has six masts and a maximum line length of 170 meters; so every carrier makes his rounds without being disturbed by the guy in front or back. And that’s not all: there will be 20 obstacles in the water. Yeah, TWENTY! You will find the classics like kicker, straightrail or table but also other innovative obstacles for wakeboarding and also wakeskating. Responsible for all this is none other than “obstacle

brain” Patrick Viererbe, from Sesitec. SWEEET! Also the lift system is from the Allgäu and the close collaboration with Sesitec will be very beneficial for the spot. There are still some more facts: The Turncable will be the first German spot running a Sesitec-System-2.0 which is known from events like the Red Bull Wake The Line and the Wake Lab. Now, every cable rider will have the opportunity to check out this system. It will be installed at a special lake near the central building. There will also be some obstacles and you can imagine that the System-2.0 will provide the basis for some new stuff. And soon the whole wakeboarding scene will know about this little village called Thannhausen which is located in the middle of Bavaria and offers some world class cable.

Rider-Of-The-Year 2008 The stars of Europe.

Foto: Ben Wiedenhofer

Two new names and one title holder make three happy Rider of the year 2008. This year again the highly desireable People Choice Award „Rider of the year“ has been choosen by wakeboard1.de together with the-gap-magazin.com. Since the last year’s rider of the year nomination has been an massive success it has been beyound all questions that this event will take place in 2008 again. Thanks to the support of Liquid Force, Ion-Essentials and Reef. The ceremony started with the the nominees in the category Wakeskating. Although Germany got many good Wakeskaters, there is one, who always tops the rest and who even belongs to the top Wakeskater in the world. It wasn’t a big surprise that Andy „the kid“ Kolb could defend his title from last year. Pete Reißmann from the resurrected New Schnitzel team took home the trophy in the womens

014_027_newss__E.indd 6

category. She has won everything in German boat competitions what could be won and is a well-deserved successor of previous year winner Ginger „Gini“ Pfennings. The with most excitement expected decision was who will take home the trophy in the mens category. This time the decision of the jury wasn’t that close and so Steffen „Vollgas“ Vollert from the team Rope-Addicts in Fulda was the lucky winner. Congratualtions from Wakeboarder Europe Magazine to all winners at this point! After the ceremony it was party time. Impressivley it has been given proof of the fact that Wakeboarders are not least known as party animals. The more suprising that some faces have been spotted early the next morning on the trade mess „Boot“. To sum it up: the Liquid Force party was a huge success this year again and a good start into the season at the same time.

WakeUp Camp LA Saisonopening at Langenfeld

Just imagine you can go wakeboarding till your legs won’t ride anymore. Just imagine you are can party till you drop. And you do that with a bunch of friends. A dream? No, it’s just the WakeUp Camp in Langenfeld. Those who were there will tell you. They will tell you that it’s addictive; that almost everybody comes back. When the wakeboarding scene will gather as always in Langenfeld around Whitsun for the tenth time, there will probably be more than 200 people. They come from Munich, Berlin, Hamburg; from the Netherlands and Austria. Whether you prefer wakeboarding behind a boat or at a cable - it doesn’t matter. When Flo and Benni Sühs introduced the Camp they had a vision: In the snowboarding scene, openings are well established events. That’s what they wanted for wakeboarding too. No training camp or contest but a happening where it’s all about wakeboarding, wakeboarding, wakeboarding, camping and partying. And every year they try to come up with something new. This time they have some new obstacles: the S-Box and the Checkmate-Box. But also the other obstacles respectively the number is impressive: 18! There are probably not many spots on the world which offer so many obstacles. Check it out next time! www.wasserski-langenfeld.de

50 years Rixen Cableways How it began…

In 1959, Bruno Rixen built the world’s first waterski lift. Now he tells you how it all began: After trying it once in the Netherlands, I was totally fascinated by waterskiing. I couldn’t afford a boat, so I started to build my first lift in 1959, just for me, without thinking about profit. I didn’t know that there were some companies who also tried to build waterski lifts - and failed. For example Roll from Switzerland and Pomagalski in France, who already built about 2000 snow ski lifts at that time. Fritz von Opel patented a waterski lift which, however, could never work the way he planned it. The investments of these established entrepreneurs added up to several million Euros! I didn’t know about any of this in my first few years. Probably it was an advantage that I had never seen a lift in the mountains; so I was open for

new ways. After I finished university, my seed capital was 100 Euros, a BMW Isetta and an old flax rack - and most of all my motivation to do waterskiing.

Foto: Rixen

I built the first prototype – which was very simple - in 1959 in Bordesholm (between Hamburg and Kiel). It was a triangle of 230 x 90 x 230 m. There was a hill where I positioned a tractor and my flax rack as engine; on the opposite side there were two trees which I used as masts. The forester charged DM 3.00 (€ 1.50) for the trees. That was my first permission! Meanwhile there were numerous helpers joining me. However, three weeks later, the tenant of the lake came back from holidays - that was the end of our waterskiing fun for the time being. He installed nets over the water so that waterskiing was impossible. But when the media visited the tenant, we were allowed to ride again; he even gave them a bucket of eels as a present.

Rider: Benny Sae Chong Foto: DDB

My first major problem was the change of direction of the cable at the corners, particularly the 160° corner at the engine. My first ride ended after 230 meters in the reed at the first corner. The rope was too loose and the following acceleration to strong. I tried a lot of different stuff to solve this problem. Soon there was a second problem. At that time, I didn’t know that each rope twists. As a result, the rope clip twisted with the rope when there was no one riding; the rope derailed, snapped and the cable fell in the water. After all, it took three hours to splice the rope. So it was important to avoid a twisting. The solution was to use two

ropes - as it is the case everywhere today. In the beginnings, however, there were lots of incalculable risks. My first lifts could transport only one skier at a time. To change the skier, the lift had to be stopped and then started again with optimal acceleration. After thinking about this for more than half a year I eventually had the right idea: not to start under the running cable but aside in the distance of the length of the towing rope. The solution was so easy, I couldn’t believe it. After these successes I thought I finally made it. However, there were further problems of technical and financial nature. The economic operation of a lift had to be guaranteed. So it was necessary that several skiers could use the lift simultaneously which required that the ropes could be decoupled at any speed. A second lift for the transportation of the towing ropes had to be developed. And then there were the authorities. I had to convince them of the advantages of waterskiing as a great diversified sport for the general public. Meanwhile the cooperation is better and it’s much easier to get permissions. Since I built my first prototype in 1959 we have built almost 200 lifts - for waterskiing and wakeboarding - in 35 countries. Now I have 15 colleagues and there is more time to go waterskiing myself again - in all disciplines but jumping!

Masters of Wake! New Contest

A German wide Wakeboard event series will start this year called Wake Masters. The events will be held at various cable parks in 6 different states across Germany between May and July. The dates and locations have been selected with the aim to enable as much Wakeboarders as possible to join the event. 9. May, Wasserski Hamburg 16. May, Alfsee StrandArena 13. It was a perfect start into the wakeboard season. On 2 May, about 7000 spectators gathered in the Stadionbad in Cologne to see world class wakeboarding. With the obstacle setup from UNIT Parktech the riders could push themselves to the limits and the quarter pipe at the end of the run opened up new perspectives for the sport. The starting field contained the crème de la crème of the international scene. 16 wakeboarders and 8 wakeskaters went for it and pushed the envelope. The US guy Keith Lidberg won the exciting Wakeboard Superfinale. Second place went to Bernhard Hinterberger from Kiefersfelden who won the duel against wakeboarding legend Parks Bonifay. Local hero Jan Kissmann - who entered the event as a wildcard - surprisingly but well-deserved won the wakeskate contest.

System 2.0 from Sesitec at its best! Loads of possibilities to shred the giant obstacle of rail builder Pat Panakos! 24 of America‘s best pros such as Parks Bonifay, JD Webb or Shawn Watson and an enthusiastic crowd were the reason that the RedBull WakeLab 2009 was one crazy experience for me! To ride the elevated pool with downrails, to cut the monster wall and especially to ride this show with all those wakeboarders who have shots in all those wakeboard magazines - I was completely stoked. The RedBull WakeLab pushes wakeboarding to another level as it promotes a very new form of wakeboarding with the Sesitec System 2.0. In the future the sport will further develop and with the RedBull Wake the Line Germany is on the best way. Custom made beanies! And finally a stand-alone announcement: The pixie of the production office is not only whishing up a nice magazine but also a lot of beanies. Producing beanies was originally her way of relaxation (we played table-kicker, she crocheted). This matter of fact was the reason for the beanies selling like hotcakes to all the editorial staff and as well as friends. Since the beanies have started to sell there now exists a long waiting list, here you can also find the names of pro-riders, who must have their heads in nothing but a mayamimikri-beanie. The good point of this story is: the style and colour of each beanie can be individually chosen and measured for each customer’s head. Each beanie is a tailor-made unique piece and is the most stylish way to protect your wet hair from the wind. The homepage is still in productin process but anyone who is interested in this product can contact the following email adress: maya@wakeboarder-europe.com Prize based on time and material € 30-65,-

WWA vs. IWSF Probably all of you know about the fight between the old-established waterski association IWSF and the newcomer World Wakeboard Association WWA from America which is also active in Europe. Similar to boxing, we now have two world championships for cable wakeboarding organized by two different associations. Even better, altogether there were three world championships in one year and 30 riders of different categories who call themselves World Champion. The high number results in part from the fact that the WWA has also world champions in the amateur classes. No wonder that sponsors and editors are confused. The referee doesn’t like repetitions either. The alternative WM of the IWSF in Anapa, Russia was so tempting that less than 50 participants and not one non-European took part. So let’s call this a dry run for the EM which should follow in Turkey in October. With more than 100 participants, numbers looked fine again and on the whole the event was a success. There was a webcast so that the people at home could watch the finals online. The EAME system, where the best out of two runs counts, was very exciting. The riders showed perfect runs at highest level without slams and without water starts. We didn’t have to wait long for the results and the eight finalists showed varied runs - wakeboarding ready for prime time TV! Definitely more interesting than the WWA KO system, where in the end always the same four riders

show the same runs. Advantage for the EAME (IWSF) which could catch up now. Before Christmas, the IWSF proudly presented 12 events on their Cable Wakeboard Homepage for summer 2009 which were blocked for ECWT Tour and a new World Tour. The current calendar states only 3.5 events. The series named “CWWC Tour by IWSF“ found only European hosts and even less than the years before. Therefore, one day after the EM in Finnland, there is such a stop at the same place. Penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The WWA Wake Park World Series, however, will have five stops in 2009. The first one was the WM which took place on the Philippines. The next stops are Orlando, Bourg en Bresse in France, Kiev and Hamburg. For the first time, the T-Mobile Playgrounds final event is not an invitational but is linked to the World Series Rankinglist. That’s fair for all. Advantage WWA... …which is immediately gambled away by the boat scene. Long after the IWSF announced their Wakeboard Championships behind the boat in Korea, the WWA decided to choose the same weekend for their World Championships in Orlando. Now the riders have to decide! When the fight is almost over, the last CWWC event will take place in Turkey in October - on a grand scale. Rumor has it, that the prize money will be 100,000 Euros - a sum which seems kind of unrealistic for our sport. Well, let’s see if the rivals are fit enough to make it that far, or if one of them gets knocked out earlier.

The 5,500 visitors of the Summer Session in Pinneberg witnessed a spectacular show: top-class BMX riding and Wakeboarding as well as three fantastic live concerts from Anti-Flag, Pennywise and headliner Mando Diao. Hours prior to the start of the T-Mobile Extreme Playgrounds it looked as if it was impossible to conduct the event. Non-stop rain with up to 25 liters per square meter softened the water ski area in Pinneberg. After an exhausting night shift and 10 trucks loaded with soaked earth, the event crew managed to reshape the whole area and start the event just in time – even though a mast of the water ski lift went underwater.

Sam Collins, currently number three of the world ranking list, down on the 4th place. The finale was a clash of the world’s two best wakeboarders: Dutchman Mike Ketellapper and the current world champion Tom Foshee from the United States. Mike pushed it to the limit with spectacular tricks, however, he bailed twice. Tom landed various clean Backside 720s and his perfect style convinced the jury that he should be the winner of the wakeboard cable contest.

At the BMX Miniramp, the riders showed what’s possible on a bike and the audience enjoyed the action. Especially the 21-year-old Ben Hennen from Great Britain pushed the envelope The summer session was a complete success, not only a n d just went for it in every run. Geier got third. BMX legend Dave Osato from Kanada competed against Harry Main and started his run with a spectacular drop in from a five meters high diving tower. However, with his faster, higher and more technical jumps, Harry showed that he is one of the best riders and defended his first place against the 32-year-old Osato. Congratulations to the young Englishman! Also the visitors had the chance to rock in front of the huge festival stage. US-Punks Anti-Flag proved their live skills and opened for their fellow countrymen Pennywise. The legends from the west coast showed that after 20 years live on stage they still know how to kick ass and rocked the crowd. After sunset, thousands of visitors experienced a full hour of guitarfueled Rock’n’Roll, delivered by headliner Mando Diao from Sweden. Phenomenal fireworks illuminated the last minutes of an unforgettable day and the exhausted but happy faces of the visitors on their way home. Rider: Tom Richter Foto: DDB

This year, Pinneberg will once again be the venue for the summer session! For the third time, the T-Mobile Extreme Playgrounds visits the water ski area near Hamburg in the north of Germany. On 30 August, Wakeboard and BMX pros will come to compete and show their skills!

On Saturday, 13 September 2008, the international Wakeboarding and Wakeskating scene gathered at the Stadionbad pool in Cologne. 24 riders from all over Europe experienced a world premiere: a mobile cable system in an open air pool. The different pools were transformed into a single innovative obstacle course with an overall length of 320 meters. 1800 spectators came to see the best Wakeboarders and Wakeskaters battling for the prize money of US-$ 10,000.

pools and runs in both directions were possible. Thanks to innovative obstacles we could see some sick transfers between the pools. Together with fine lines, Unit Parktech installed the swimming kickers and rails. They created a nice setup, not only for the riders but also for the audience which witnessed the action from the pool edge.

The Red Bull Wake The Line is a well respected contest. The riders list features names like, Bernhard Hinterberger (multiple World, Europe and German The mobile Sesitec 2.0 system dragged the champion), Dennis Knasiak (former European chamriders over the full length of the four consecutive pion) and Nico von Lerchenfeld (the Nike 6.0 up-

start). 16 Wakeboarders and 8 Wakeskaters were invited to convince head judge Flo Meeh and his jury. Also the man on the mic, Clint Liddy, did a great job and had the crowd under control. Clints enthusiasm for the Red Bull Wake The Line was real as the riders really pushed each other to the limit. Bernhard Hinterberger sticked a Crow Mobe and a Frontside 360 Melon Grab off Axis in his final run. Peter Pascal Schmidt showed his perfect style in the pools and ended his run with a Frontside 7. Wakeskater Andy Kolb showed how to do 360 Shove-its in the flat and stomped a Fs 360 over the kicker

and a backlip over the whole A-Frame Box. Best Trick went to Dominik Gührs with a Frontside 900. Everybody enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. “Usually, we have to ride in some dirty lakes,” said Wakeboard winner Peter Pascal Schmidt. “To ride in a real pool with crystal clear water is just amazing.” The US-$ 3,000 prize money for his first place rounded off his day – although the dollar rate is not on his side at the moment. It was obvious that the riders did not only compete against each other but had a great time together. Due to the invitational system, there was no difference between young and old and the audience got to see 12-year-old Nike 6.0 rider Martin Druille who came from Spain to join the event.

1 Contest, 3 Categories, 5 Days, 21 Countries, 350 Riders … One Hell Of A PARTY! That was it. The WWA Wake Park World Championships that took place at CWC in the Philippines are over. For the second time in a row the WWA World Champions were held at the Asian Wake-Paradise. The contest brought a major advancement to the table and took place without any big complications. Added to the two familiar towing machines, cable and boat, was the Sesitec System 2.0 winch park. Here you can already see, why this could not be a IWSF event, because only the WWA offers so much variety in one comp. 350 wake boarders and wake skaters from all over the world showed up at Camarines Sur to make wakeboard history. Not only would there be a winner in each separate category, but there would also be an ultimate wake(skate) champion, the overall winners who competed in all classes. Rider: Tom Fooshee Foto: Flo Meeh Lifestyle Fotos: Flo Meeh, Flo Süß, Fetzy, Kevin Cobb

The event started on March 24th with the arrival of the last riders and the registration of the participants and the media. The whole process was a bit of a charade but everybody received something for their patience. In addition to the privilege of competing, the Rider‘s Kit included a t-shirt, sticker, WWA rules brochure, bottle opener necklace which you could get engraved for free and last but not least, food and drink vouchers. With these you could get free meals from the buffets that were set up 3 times a day and any drinks that were available. Later on the 24th, the first party kicked off the event. The „Sunset Chill out Party“ that included live reggae music got everybody in a chilled mood. Every 040 wakeboarder europe magazine

The next day it was time for the opening ceremony. Similar to the registration the day before, it was kinda chaotic. Most riders found out just 10 minutes in advance what they had to do. But in the end it went over quite smoothly. The opening was the also the start off for the live web stream so people across the globe got to see the opening choreography by the L-Ray Dancers, 21 miniature hot air balloons symbolizing the different nations, and a rider from each country carrying his or her flag for one lap around the lake. As soon as the opening ceremony was done, the actual competition was kicked off with qualification runs on the cable and system 2.0.

evening at 7pm, fireworks started the theme party for the night. Live Bands, DJs, dancers, games and entertainment by Philippine celebrities really got the nights going. The best outfits matching the theme of the day were rewarded with 5000 peso (105$) gift certificates by the Governor himself. So you can guess how crazy the outfits were when the „Retro“ or „Arabian Night“ parties were going on.

The winch park (that was completed 2 days before the event) made rail to rail transfers and even flip variations like you saw in the latest skateboard flick. And if you were able to catch a glimpse of the web-stream or some YouTube footage you will know why this competition had to be held in the Philippines. No other complex has such an awesome setup to offer. Each day the tricks got sicker and the number of riders decreased a lot until the finals came along. On March 29th the podium places for cable (Wake & Sk8), obstacles only, boat (Wake & Sk8) und winch (Wake & Sk8) were to be decided. Rider: Reed Hansen Foto: Flo Meeh

The (semi-)finals on cable were held in head-to-head format. Dominik Gührs vs. Marc Shuster, Tom Fooshee vs. Lior Sofer, Nick Davies vs. Sam Collins Now the time had come, that everybound Mike Ketelapper vs. Donald Sheldy had beet waiting for and the remaining brick were fighting to the bitter end. The four riders were up. Even though Niki Gührs competition was really intense. Espehad won his head-to-head heat, he tried to cially the battle between Dominik and step it up with a Mobe 5 and a Raley 5 and Marc was so close that the judges neebailed on both tricks. Mike Ketelapper rode ded a few extra minutes to decide who had made the cut … strong and clean and was able to save a spot on the podium. Marc, unfortunately didn‘t. Last year’s winner, Tom Fooshee, who had been showing the

events same extreme run during the whole event that included Pete Rose 5 over the kicker and Crowmobe 5 nailed it, yet again. So it was clear to everybody that Nicky D had to step it up, if he wanted to be World Champion. And then Nick Davies showed the world why he is the best known cable wake boarder by busting one of the sickest runs the planet has ever seen. He started with a Ts 900 over the kicker and then Nickelodeon, Mobe 5, TS Raley BS 180 and a Double S-Bend to blind followed‌ A run that only one man could stick, and it clearly meant that Nick Davies was the man of the competition. And the crowd loved it! It was great to see, that every winner of a Men’s Pro Category was from a different Continent. EY TOM HOW `S THINGS IN 2009? So starting December of 09, you will start seeing me anywhere and everywhere. I will be traveling all over the globe endorsing and supporting all of my sponsors to the fullest. So if you catch me at your local cable park or the lake or river you ride on, come holla at me! GIVE US A SHORT INTRODUCTION OF YOURSELF. I am Tom Fooshee, I am 24 years old, a full time professional wakeboarder and lady lover and I am currently one semester away from having my bachelors degree in Exercise Sports Science from Texas State University. FIRST THINGS ABOUT TEXAS FOR US EUROPEANS ARE COWBOYS, RODEO, HUNTING AND GAMBLING. WHAT ABOUT YOU? DO YOU RIDE HORSES, WEAR COWBOY HATS AND LIKE TO GAMBLE? Well, if by horses you mean women then yes I do, haha. But really, I don’t personally reflect what most people think of when they think Texan. But however I am a huge football fan, which is larger than god in Texas. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE USA, MR. B. OBAMA? I am super pumped about him. The man has done his homework and has served his time. I feel he is what a president should be. He is a real man to step into office with all the issues that we have and do what he can to better our country and the world. AND HOW ARE THE REACTIONS OF THE PEOPLE IN TEXAS IN GENERAL? Practically everyone in Texas and in America is all about Obama, he is the man. It‘s time for a change and he is our perfect change. ALLRIGHT, LET`S TALK ABOUT OUR PASSION. IS WAKEBOARDING THE MAIN THING IN

044_052_53__TOM_FOO_E.indd 4

YOUR LIFE AT THE MOMENT? HOW DID WAKEBOARDING CHANGED YOUR LIFE? I wish I could say wakeboarding is the main thing in my life right now, but I split it in half with school. As soon as school is done late this year, I will be fully committed to wakeboarding. I could pop up at any given country ready to shred with anyone at any given point in time. Wakeboarding has changed my life dramatically because it has enabled me to travel all over the world and open my mind up to new directions. It has taught me a lot and it has matured me, too, at the same time. The more I have become involved within the wakeboarding world, my grades in school have gone up. So it helps me with life in general. HOW YOU FEELIN' TO BE ONE OF THE LIQUID FORCE INTERNATIONAL TEAM RIDERS? It is such an amazing feeling to be a part of one of the (if not the) most prestigious wakeboarding companies out. Everyone that rides and works for LF are probably the coolest people you will ever meet. We have the perfect team of people at Liquid Force. Not to mention that all of Liquid Force’s products are the best out and the most innovative.

shot Tanny Location CWC Phillies

IS IT TRUE, THAT YOU DEFEATED A PRO-MODEL BOARD, CAUSE YOU RIDE BOTH (BOAT&CABLE), AND THOUGH YOU DON`T WANT TO KID THE PEOPLE WHILE RIDING 2 BOARDS? Ultimately I want to keep up with what I am riding right now which is one single board for both cable and boat. I would love to design a board for cable and a board for boat. Or even a board for both … someday we will see, you just have to wait. DID YOU HAD FUN ON THAT S-BOX IN LANGENFELD? It was my first time on this S-box and I fell in love with it as soon as I hit it, because it was so easy but challenging at the same time. It‘s so much fun to go bank to bank like that.

Langenfeld is always notorious for having fresh new rail designs built to the best quality. That S-rail is just one small example of the of why Langenfeld leads the way in Germany. Props to them!

WHAT ABOUT THE EVENTS? WHAT‘S THE DIFFERENCE IN CABLE AND BOAT EVENTS, AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE MORE? This is a tough one. This all depends on where you go in the world. I have been to some of the sickest boat events with the baddest chicks but then again I have also seen the same in cable. I think with the help of Gov. LRay, we can bring both together and have an ultimate wakeboard event, such as WWA Wake Park Worlds 2009. WHICH WAS THE BEST EVENT “EVER” FOR YOU? Well there would be two of those. The WWA Wake Park World Championships, because it’s a competition for the world title and plus it contains all the elements of wakeboarding which is right up my alley. (Boat, Cable, System 2.0) Then there is also the T-Mobile Extreme Playgrounds in Hamburg Germany. If you have ever been a part of this event you know why. This event is the fattest hook up and one of the crunkest all around shows to attend. Check it! Lastly an event called Cablestock in my home town at Texas Ski Ranch is one of the dopest to go to. I say this because we have the hottest chicks in our town, and they are all out at Cablestock.

We have plenty of the world’s best riders riding cable, boat and winch. And to top it off, there is a House Party every night of Cable-stock every year. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A PERFECT WAKE DAY? Wake up around noon, haha, head to Lake Dunlap and shred the glass behind any boat with a solid wake, then a cable set with my homies on the way home. This is actually something that happens very often, I’m very lucky to get to do so. WHERE YOU USUALLY HAVE THE MOST OF THOSE DAYS? Right here in Texas. Lake Dunlap and TSR are within 10 minutes of each other so basically all you guys know where to find me when it’s warm. You can even catch me purifying myself in the waters of Lake Austin … rip Rick James. WHO IS THE MAIN PERSON YOU GO RIDING WITH? Kyle Reed, Josh Wright, Earl Ball, Gabe Lucas WHO ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSONS IN YOUR LIFE? My family of course. There are not very many peeps in my family, so they mean the most. And if course my friends down here in San Marcos that keep me entertained every weekend from the daytime to the nighttime.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BEST AND YOUR WORST WAKEBOARD TRIP IN YOUR LIFE. Best would be my trip in 2007 to Germany. I won every single contest that I rode in and I had such a great time going from cable to cable with Christian Grüner filming for Impact. Also a night at Pearls tops it off to make it the best. Worst: I`ve been very fortunate that wakeboarding has brought me nothing but good experiences. So this really wasn’t a bad trip at all, it was just the traveling part that was terrible. On this years LF team trip to Lake Powell, I got my luggage lost on the way out there which didn’t arrive to me until 5 days later (So I was wearing the same clothes for 5 days straight on the houseboats) and then once I got my gear it was time to leave. So on the flight back from Lake Powell to Phoenix I was told that my gear wouldn’t make it on that flight either. It ended up being the bumpiest and scariest flight ever too. Ask Aaron Reed how he felt. So I didn’t get my sh*t back for few days again.

…but if you lived the life that I have then you would understand why

SURE YOU KNOW SESITEC 2.0 SYSTEM… DO YOU THINK CABLE EVENTS WILL BE PUSHED INTO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH THAT KIND OF CABLE SYSTEMS? You know it! Its cable’s time to shine right now. They already are blowing up to an unreal point, so it will only get bigger. As for system 2.0, it is going to revolutionize the way we jam. It’s an affordable way to do whatever the hell you want with wakeboarding or wakeskating. It’s most definitely the future of our sport. WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU IN WAKEBOARDING? Oh wow, this list could go on for days. In short, my family for their support, Josh Wright and Kyle Reed for pushing me and all the stylish riders out there for doing what they do and making wakeboarding as creative as they can. WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET? Hank Hill, Vince Young, Jenna Jameson, haha, and the whole University of Texas football team. HOW DOES YOUR DREAMGIRL LOOK LIKE? Short brunette or blonde, has curves to the fullest and has a very sexy look, and appeal to herself. I try to leave the less intelligent ones behind. YOU SEE YOUR DREAMGIRL AT A PARTY. HOW DO YOU GET HER ATTENTION? I try to find out if she enjoys tequila as much as I do, the rest just unfolds from there. So yeah that can work great or blow up on you so you got to watch out with that one. I’m sure you can figure this one out.

WHICH OBSTACLE YOU LIKE MOST? LET ME GUESS THE FUNBOX… DUDE THAT SWITCH TS BS 450 TRANSFERS ARE AWESOME! SO DO YOU SPIN ALL 8 DIRECTIONS OVER A FUNBOX?? WHICH IS THE HARDEST FOR YOU? Yeah, that transfer box in the Phillies is definitely sick! I am a big fan of it for sure. I’ve gotten pretty solid on transfers from all directions (switch, regular, TS, HS, BS, FS). Spinning all 8 directions anyways is a part of my riding that I constantly work on, whether it be off the wake, on a transfer or off a kicker, I try to do it every way that is possible. As far as a tough transfer, Switch BS 450 to switch backlip is stupid hard. I really like obstacles though that have a lot of different lines that you can take into it. They allow the rider to be creative and use the obstacle in a different way the what is seen to the “untrained” mind. WHAT WERE THE THREE BIGGEST SUCCESSES IN YOUR CAREER: 2008 WWA Wake Park World Champion (Pro men and Obstacles only) 2008 WWA Wake Park World Series overall champion and 4 time Cablestock champion (Pro men boat and cable) 4th place at the 2008 Brostock invitational doubleup contest – Lake Powell Utah WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO AFTER YOUR WAKEBOARD CAREER? I have been in school for ages now, so I would like to use my degree to some extent. I want to coach football, baseball and track someday. Ultimately though, I want to work within the Wake industry. There are not too many riders with a degree so I’m hoping that might add to my résumé.

Rope Bash Part 2 – Langenfeld! With movies it is often the case that the sequel doesn’t match the expectations of the viewers. With the Rope Bash, however, it’s different: the LangenfeldCrew not only came up with 4 cables (!), they also created an own winch park in their biotope!! Perfect conditions for the 30 invited riders and the photographers. CAMERA - LIGHT - ACTION! Lifestyle Fotos: Martin Munter, Flo Süß Philippe Stalla, DDB, Flo Meeh Text: Flo Süß

Ring Ring… Ring Ring “Hey Dan, what’s up?”, „Hey Flo, what do you think, should we do the Rope Bash in Langenfeld this year?” ,„Yeah! Allgäu was awesome last year – let’s do it!”. Sometimes it’s that easy to decide to bring top wakeboarders and photographers together to have a great session and produce some sick footage. Of course, there were lots of preparations and I also asked myself: What can we do to make something really special? Already with the construction of the fourth cable we moved some earth to be able to create a winch spot with an elevated pool someday. I thought about how cool it would be to have this pool ready for the Bash. So we grabbed a pencil and paper and after a short time we had a “construction plan”. After some exhausting days before the Rope Bash, the big pool and a Flat-DownFlat-Rail was ready just in time! Phew! The Rope Bash is one of the few “events” which is not some kind of competition where everybody just

zel, Tarik Ghoniem, Dennis Knasiak, Zinthy, Steffge, Skubi and many others, not to forget the Langenfeld homies and also the RopeAddicts, who showed up with their campers. And of course, there were the experts behind the camera: Dan Deak Bardos, the inventor of the Rope Bash, Martin Munter, Flo Meeh, Patrick Prill, Dino and Philippe Stalla. Ok, there is only one ingredient missing to produce some perfect shots: LIGHT. Sun, bluebird, bright colors and glassy water. Well, unfortunately we were not that lucky. For almost the whole week we had suboptimal conditions and needed lots

of flashes and lights to bring some color into the drabness.

The event started on Monday late afternoon , as many riders came directly from the Extrem e Playgrounds in Hamburg . The Base of the Bash-Soc iety was built up on the popular WakeUp camping site directly besides Bahn 4. That was the place where the first sessio n took place – and som e of the last sunrays cam e through; however, at that time nobody knew they would be the las t for the next week! Afterwards it was time to check out the pool setup at the biotope and the photographers tested their flashes. On the second day the weather was even worse and the sch eduled early bird sessio n turned into a late chicken sessio n. The chickens checked out Bahn 3 and the ph wgs created their crazy otodaflash raft which they use d for the obstacles. In the evening, the flas h pirates paddled to the tope for the second po biool session. Next to the rail, some of the guys already built a pool gap made of a kic ker and a table with curb from our scrap yard. To ma ke matters worse, the highly praise d winch, that works rea lly perfect - if it works - gave up.

Thank god the weather didn’t change the next morning – we would have kicked ourselves in the ass!! So, there was plenty of time to enjoy our hangovers before shooting some photos again. During the day, more and more guests already had to leave us and in the evening we rocked the pool with the locals before having a nice last BBQ.

To see top action you have to go to a contest? Wrong! Top action can be seen on these pages in this magazine. Wakeboarding and wakeskating at its best! I’m looking forward to the next Rope Bash – I think I will call Dan and suggest a nice spot…

The Wakeboarder Europe Team especially wants to thank the Sühs family and the whole LangenfeldCrew. Special Thanks also to: Matti for his camper - our home; all riders and their sponsors as well as all photographers! BIG UP!

Hip-notics is not just a further cable park in Europe, no it is the ďŹ rst cable park in Turkey and it rocks! It is located on 50 acres not far from Antalya the next bigger city and consists of 3 man-made lakes in which four cables are running. The spot has become the insider tip within the European Wakeboard community and has already been the scenery for international ďŹ lm productions. Of course we had to check it out as well!

The cables: Unbelievable not less than 4 cables are ready for you to shred. There is one Wakeboard cable, one skiing cable and two Rixen Easy starts. The Wakeboard cable is totally state of the art. 5 masts on a man-made lake with an island in the middle. It got the right length that enables you nice combination of tricks in one lap. The pull of the cable is massive and guarantees long airtime when doing inverts. Also in regards to obstacles there is nothing to complain about. At the moment there are two kicker, one funbox, an A-frame and a flat rail in the water which are all very well constructed. The cable for the skiiers got 6 masts with a length of 740meters and most important for the skiiers: it got an slalom course. Last but not least there are two Rixen Easy start cables.

The climate: Although it never really gets cold, it is recommendable to bring your wetsuit in the winter season. In general it is not getting too chilli during the winter months between November and April hitting outside tempratures in the 20ies (degrees in celsius). May and June are getting warmer with outside tempratures between 20 and 30 degrees celsius. In July and August it sometimes gets too hot reaching up to 40 degrees celsius. At this time you better stay in or at least on the water most of the time. September and October are getting more comfortable again with average temparatures between 20 and 30 degrees celsius. Well it’s a hot spot in its truest sense of the word.

Rider: Bernhard Hinterberger Foto: Martin Munter

The spot: In regards to the architectural setup the complex couldn’t be built better: All four cables are right next to each other and are reachable without long marches when you are keen to switch from riding from one cable to another. There are also trampolins, playgrounds and a volleyball ďŹ eld. Also worth to mention. The whole area is located within a nice natural surrounding with plenty of locations to chill or just watch the riders.

Other activities: Beachvolleyball, Trampolin, Playstation, wii, Indo Board, Mountainbiking, Hiking, Quad riding, Rafting, Massage and during winter even snowboarding!

Ballermann, Jürgen Drews and sangria out of buckets – that’s what comes to your mind if you think about Majorca. The Wakeboarder Europe Team was also kind of skeptical when we were invited to go on a road trip there. With plenty of prejudices we took off to the Balearic Islands. After getting out of the plane, and getting over the first shock about all those typical Majorca tourists around us, we went to the baggage claim area where we realized – we are in Spain. And as you know, in Spain time moves at a different pace: mañana mañana! Around 3.5 hours later, we finally got our luggage and an air-conditioned rental car. We headed towards Santanyi, a relatively untouristy town in the southeast of the island. There are really some beautiful places on Majorca, far away from Palma and S’Arenal. We lodged in a typical Majorcan finca and relaxed at the pool.

However, we were not here for sun tanning; we wanted to visit the only wakeboarding school of Majorca. Nacho, the owner of the school, awaited us and we were very excited. After some phone calls we met him in Palma near the

harbor. The blond Spaniard arrived in a Volkswagen Bus wearing Frogskin sunglasses and a bright smile - ¡Hola! Instead of just driving us to the „Escuela de Wakeboard“, Nacho took us to Pollença, about 55 km further in the north of the island. Meanwhile it was 4 pm and we already abandoned the idea to have a wakeboard session this day. The way there, however, was a scenic experience. The further north we went, the more mountains we saw and in the west, an impressive mountain ridge emerged. It was like a paradise for bikers in untouched nature. When we arrived at the harbor of Pollença, three Mastercraft boats and Nacho’s buddies already waited for us. Ok, we were wrong – there would be a great private boat session. On the way from the harbor to the bay of Pollenca Nacho told us that from 5 pm the water will be glassy and we would have the whole bay for ourselves. So we relaxed on the boat and finished off the day. On the headland next to us we could see a huge property and we were told that Richard Branson (founder of Virgin Records) owns this place which is the most expensive real estate available worldwide at the moment - for some 120,000,000 million you can buy yourself a nice home.

And then it was on! The water really got glassy and Nacho prepared for his first set. Our photographer took advantage of the follow boat and was stoked. The light and the scenery were perfect and Nacho went for it in front of the international media. The biggest surprise was Bea, a friend of Nacho, who at first glance looked quite petite. However, when she put on her helmet and performed some sick Backrolls, Tantrums and 180s we were flabbergasted - respect! This girl rocks! With a cheesy sunset in the background it

was our turn. We all had fantastic sets and we were stoked by this spot. In the evening we hit the road again. This time we took another route via Artà, Manacor and Felanitx in the east along the coast. The scenery was totally different and meanwhile all prejudices about Majorca were gone. We were overwhelmed by this beautiful island. Especially at the east coast between the cliffs, which are often used by freeclimbers, there are a lot of hidden spots with white sand beaches and dazzling turquoise water. Here and there you can also find some small beach bars where you probably get delicious sangria and homemade tapas. We checked out some of those “secret spots” and one thing is for sure – it was worth it! The next day, we visited Nacho and his wakeboarding school at the marina of Cala Major near Palma. There are two big Nautic boats available for beginners and pros and there is a very good-humored coach who obviously likes his job. No wonder with the nice weather all the time. Lots of kids are running around and warm up on a big trampoline between the yachts. Nacho smiles and says with Spanish accent: “Everything is easy, easy!” And he is right. Meanwhile we also had the “mañana mañana spirit”!

102 wakeboarder europe magazine

100_103_Malle_E_.indd 4

After a week on Majorca we left the island but we will certainly come back. Not only because wakeboarding is a great experience here but also because of all the other things there are to discover!

11.05.09 00:51

Some facts about Majorca: Population: 813.729 Number of tourists per year: 9.91 million Soccer club: Real Mallorca (after all they play in the first division) Number of inhabitants who sing along to songs of Jürgen-Drews: 0 Number of children conceived per year after a boozing night at Ballermann 6: 1543 Number of tourists who are not allowed to take their flight home because their alcohol level is too high: 586 Number of Germans who never took their flight home: unknown, but Jürgen Drews is one of them. Most stupid advertising campaign on Majorca: election posters of the German political party FDP All data without warranty!

You are still one of the wakeboarding newcomers in Europe. How did you get to wakeboarding and when did you sign your first contract? One day, when I was six years old, my dad took me to my uncle’s cable after school. I managed to make the round first try and at the same day I checked out the monoski and the trickski. It was an amazing feeling right from the beginning, especially the first Railey. Hardy Tunnissen (NewSchnitzel ) was the first to offer me a sponsoring contract. Of course I immediately took the chance to join the Schnitzel Team. How do you like this season so far? I have been riding only once in Langenfeld (today: 29 March) and I totally went for it. However, I never had such a great season start before; and I didn’t even get sore muscles.

gun man

What else is on your schedule this season? Weeell, everything and more! Starting with the WakeTheLine on 1 May; afterwards the WakeUp Camp in Langenfeld, just like every year. I will also be at the DM, EM, ECWT and the WakeMasters, for sure; and of course at the T-Mobile Extreme in Pinneberg. Concerning the other WWA stops I can’t tell at the moment. How is your basic military service going? What’s happening there? I finally finished the AGA (basic training). I have to admit, it was actually quite hard! But we had fun, too. Now I’m stationed in Hammelburg which is only 10 km from Thulba. ALMOST perfect. I’m busy all day but I won’t give you more details! (laughs)

How does your perfect wakeboarding day look like? The perfect wakeboarding day is definitely on a weekday. Getting up shortly before 11 am; picking up two ‘Leberkaesbroetchen’ at the butcher; arriving at the lake; eating; waiting for the guy to start the lift as I am too early (just couldn’t wait); then being the first and the only one in the water and just going for it on the cable; afterwards relaxing; the other guys arrive; we have fun at the lake; perhaps some water skiing; shortly before 6 pm, when the rush hour is over: balls to the walls again – till 8 pm; afterwards perhaps some BBQ. In the end somebody gives me a ride home; I watch some TV and just chill.

What are your professional plans? Most likely, I will apply for voluntary military service and remain soldier. I have no job in mind… and I don’t want to work at my old employer. They unfortunately had a different opinion about wakeboarding… If anybody needs me – I am fit for almost anything! Just call me, I’m your man: steffen_vollert@hotmail.de

Is this why they call you “Vollgas Vollert”?

How comes? My friends don’t call me that… actually only at contests they call me that. I think Didi gave me this name in 2006 but I have no clue why.

What about „Gunman Vollert“? What’s the story? I can’t tell… no idea… Hardy and the others just picked this name. Who are the most important people in your life? Of course my family, especially my brother. He’s just awesome! My girlfriend and all the guys who spend the summer with me in Thulba. Thanks to… ? Mum and Dad. Aaaand … NewSchnitzel, O`Neill, Reef, Bern, Skullcandy, Smith. Without them it just won’t work. And additionally: Tobi, Anna, Andy, Sebi, Regina, Isi, Philip, Stelli, Simm, Sabrina, Dino, Tobi, Tamara, Garfunkel, Tom, everybody in Langenfeld, Schwandorf, the Allgäu, Nethen… just every everybody.

some words from The start of the season was not really motivating for you. Tell us what exactly happened on the Phillies!? I was at the new Winchpark, tried to jump some gaps and hurt my finger a little bit, nothing serious. Afterwards, I decided to check out the CWC skate park. I did a backside heelflip in the bank, twisted my ankle and tore my ligaments for the sixth time.

Oh shit! Just before the World Series! What are your plans for this season? Riding all WWA tour stops and various other contests, shooting some good photos and landing a double flip.

reinhardt How does your perfect wakeskate day look like? Sleeping late, going to the lake, having a good session, learning a new trick, being happy, afterwards BBQ with my homies. What’s your greatest success so far? First place at the FBI, fifth place at the CWC Open, viceGerman champion in Magdeburg and taking over the world! Who are the most important people in your life? OK! Are there some tricks which god doesn’t want you to stick? And with which ones does he help you? Apparently, he just doesn’t want me to stick the double flip in the flat. But he kind of likes my 540° shove-it in the flat, haha.

You want to be a religion teacher, right? Tell us about it… Yeah, that’s actually true. It’s good to teach, not at all uninteresting and it’s better than German or so…

What do you think of the mortal sins? God sees everything! Muahahaha

Protestant or catholic education? Where did you get the idea and when did you realize that this is your way? I am half Italian, so I am Catholic. Moreover, I live in catholic Bavaria. Well, actually I wanted to study physics as second subject but one day I took a look-around and realized that there were only strange nerds in the lecture hall, so I decided to change the subject. In a way I am kind of religious and that’s how it happened. Define “faith”: Faith is a driving force which can sometimes move mountains (not only in the religious sense!

Is the 540° shove-it also your favorit trick? No, my favorite is the hardflip.

What certainly everybody wants to know: Where the hell did you get those arms? Genetics or muscle factory? What’s your secret? (hehe) I often thought about that, too, but it’s definitely the swimming. In Friedberg there is no land in sight. I also go to the gym but there I train everything but my arms. Which psalm do you want to give our readers as piece of advice for life? No psalm but a saying: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” And here the psalm: “Get skills or die trying.“ Thanks to..? Talking about women wakeboarding behind boats in Germany, chances are high the talk is about you. Since when are you into this sport? I started wakeboarding in summer 2001. And no – it didn’t work out from the start! It actually took quite a long time until I got the hang of it behind the boat ;-). But I always had lots of fun and every step was a new challenge. In 2003, I participated at the first contest; since then, I have traveled to boat contests every year. In 2005, we got our first wakeboard boat to have perfect conditions. From there things have been looking up. What I like about wakeboarding is that it’s not only about the sport but also about the scene. You meet lots of nice people and make friends. I think that’s also a reason why I love this sport!

This is not: bad weather, stress and bad mood! Food: Of course Schnitzel Favorite music: Everything that rocks and sounds like fun! Favorite trick: Everything with fun and style! Results: a lot of, but my most successful year was definitely 2008

Last year we quite often saw you at the cable. Any ambitions here? Cable is cool! Really! Last year I travelled to Thulba several times and it was awesome. It’s just a great fun alternative. But no worries, I stay behind the boat, promise! Is there a wake-chick you look up to? For sure, Dallas Friday shows high and sick tricks and is very successful. I also like Amber Wing, especially her 720 and her style. Way to go ladies! Nowadays, everything’s about style. How would you explain the “Pete-Reißmann-Style” and who inspires you? Hahaha… “Pete-Reißmann-Style“… well… everybody has kind of his own style. My style is perhaps height and grabs. I think the biggest influence is my own riding.

Cable is awesome

Who do you like to spend time with on the boat? I really like hanging out with my husband Reto and our friends. We meet almost every evening and at the weekends. With palm tree, hammock, BBQ and good music the harbor is a great place. If we want to, we go wakeboarding, otherwise we just have a beer and relax.

In 2008 you kind of won everything there is to win in Germany behind the boat (the Chill-And-Ride, the DM and also the audience award, „Rider-Of-The-Year“). Are there any goals left for the future? This year I want to take it easy, take a time-out. Of course there are goals for my future – but not only concerning my sport. I want to keep at it in wakeboarding, for sure. For everything else, I will see what’s in store for me… Was there an experience in wakeboarding you’re still thinking about? Would you rather forget it? Thailand was amazing! For some people perhaps nothing special, for me the best four weeks. Well, there were enough embarrassing experiences I would rather forget!

Meanwhile everybody in the scene knows about it: In 2009 you will be more behind the baby buggy than behind the boat. Congrats and best wishes! Will there be a comeback in 2010? Thanks! We are really excited! 2009 will be a great year – even though it will perhaps be not as much about sport. A comeback in 2010? I will be wakeboarding again, for sure, as soon as possible! I hope to be back in 2010 and try to get in shape during the next winter. Thanks to… My husband Reto (kisses), our awesome friends, my family and of course Hardy, Chris and Julian from New Schnitzel, Andy and Family from Mastercraft, Vanessa from Jee Vice and many more…

some words from

Kathrin

ogretici How would you describe your local spot? In 2007, my uncle built a second lift in Damp. A 5-mast lift beautifully located directly at the Baltic Sea. What’s special about our spot is that there is a big island in the middle of the lake with 10 German Heaths on it. Although there are strong winds here at the Baltic Sea, we always have glassy water. Another absolute highlight are definitely our obstacles: A-frame, roof, two kickers, an uprail and a stepdown-box - you can have lots of fun.

What’s in your luggage when you go on a wake-trip? My laptop, my camera and my sunglasses. What has been your best experience in wakeboarding so far? What your worst? Best: There are so many beautiful moments but the best moments are when I land a new trick. Worst: I tried a Backroll, lost the handle and twisted my knee – OUCH Is there something you don’t like about wakeboarding? Yeees, people who have to try an Invert in the flat and pull me off the obstacle.

its all about water

How does your perfect wakeboarding day look like? CWC, at 8.30 am on the water (smiles). As I work in seasonal business, I always look forward to taking some rounds after closing time. I love to just ride until sunset when all the people already went home. Is water your favorite element? Yeah! Me without water – no way. I grew up in Hamburg – I always lived near the water; my first apartment was located directly at a beautiful canal and today I live at the Baltic Sea and I really enjoy it. Who is the most important person in your life? Definitely my parents, my brother and my better half. Date of birth: 31. October 1982 Place of birth: Hamburg Place of living:: Damp, (Baltic Sea) Favorite spot: Damp, CWC Stance: Goofy Favorite Trick: gap to backlip, Frontflip Favorite music: Everything that rocks and makes me feel good

Who is your favorite rider? Dominik Gührs

How do you practice new tricks? Do you try them on a trampoline first or do you just go for it in the water? Do you practice certain sets? I think long and hard about my practicing. We have no trampoline, so I have to do try-runs on land. We go shooting a lot which helps me to learn about my mistakes. Important: If it hurts, just try once again and sooner or later you stick the trick. Which tricks are on your to-learn list for the next season? Many… :-) But if I would land the Switch Roll and the Frontflip Blind I would be happy. Which obstacle has yet to be built? My favorite obstacle is the roof – so perhaps a giant rooftop?! Favorite film: Impact This is hot: 30°C, glassy lake, wakeboarding, Cuba Libre, BBQ at the lake This is not: endless discussions, people who think they know everything Results: 2nd place NWC tour scoring, 4th ECWT Magdeburg, 1st DM Magdeburg, 2nd EM Bursa Sponsoren: Jetpilot, O´Brien

You are one of the big wakeboarding newcomers in Europe. How did you get into wakeboarding? My uncle owns a waterski and wakeboarding lift in Jagel. As long as I can think, I’m in and on the water. For years I rode trickski. Then the wakeboard came out. I had to pause for some years because of my school, my education, etc. Since 2004 I’m wakeboarding regularly again

some words from

brunorixen Mr. Bruno Rixen, you are the inventor and constructor of the cable which, 50 years ago, was a totally new and revolutionary lift system. You witnessed the development of cable wakeboarding from the very beginning. Please tell us about some highlights. I’m happy about wakeboarding getting more and more popular all around the world. The first time I rode a wakeboard was in 1983. After 100 m riding I wanted to check out some spins and bailed. Several years ago, we started to build the masts of our lifts about 1 m higher so that the riders can get more air time. Last year I visited the Wakeboard-EM at the new lift in Bursa; that was a very special event.

What future innovations can we expect regarding cables? A whole lot! However, that’s top secret. Every year we have about 50 ideas of improvements. When will the first indoor lift be built? At a sports fair some years ago, we already built an indoor lift. “Schumi” tried his first waterski round at a cable there. Hundreds of visitors were stoked. We already had some designs for an adequately large hall but investments and heating costs were too high compared to the expected demand at that time.

cablewakeboarding

Which country has the biggest demand for lifts at the moment? There is a great demand all over the world. At the moment we are building two lifts in Abu Dhabi. With every further country which gets a cable, chances increase that wakeboarding becomes Olympic.

Since last year, 2-mast lifts are the next big thing. Was it your fantastic idea? Already 21 years ago, I constructed such a lift; however, I dismissed the idea as the 180° loop which the towing line builds on the water seemed too dangerous. Instead, we decided to use the SkiRix-Winch, which has often been used in indoor pools and only had a construction time of one hour. Only after we got the idea to run the line in a simple way over the water, we developed the prototype two years ago and used it for the public. Recently, this lift is patent-protected and we call it “BroCable”. With three different programs the system is perfect for beginners and pros as well as for wakeskaters to practice at the obstacles. All replicas we know are similar to my construction of 21 years ago which we used only for the transport of material.

You are pilot. What’s better, flying or wakeboarding? Both are great! But flying is more important to me because I can discover small lakes which can’t be found on any map. Wow, perhaps you can show me some killer spots!? Before the opening of a new spot, there are often many opponents, and authorities are hesitant with permissions. Which was the dumbest argument you ever heard against a cable? There were a lot of prejudices, for example: “That’s too loud!”, “Who wants to do waterskiing here?”, or – the other way round – “The access road is not adequate for the expected traffic!”. After I talked at the meeting of the city council a council woman actually said the cables would be a problem for birds as they wouldn’t see them and could hurt themselves. Where do you see our sport 10 years from now? So far, 720 million km have been ridden on Rixen cableways. That’s more than 5 times to the sun! Our sales figures show that waterskiing and wakeboarding is not increasing in a linear but in an upward curve. 10 years from now, we will have many more cables than today.

some words from With your work you not only pushed wakeboarding in Austria but throughout Europe. What has been your motivation? Thanks for the compliment. Well, it just happened. Somehow I got into it and from there, things rolled on. In the beginning, my focus had been Austria. I wanted everything to work out here. With the three events at the jetlake in Feldkir-

chen, Austria, we went beyond the boundaries. For me it is important that the European scene gets the respect it deserves. Of course, we may have to work on our skills behind the boat but on the cable, Europe is the vanguard. However, the situation will soon be different as the image of cable wakeboarding is changing in the US. I am really looking forward to the day

when, for example, Bernhard Hinterberger is hailed as a hero just like Shaun Murray. Nick Davies is probably the first European who moves in this direction.

waterskiers keep on caring only about meetings, dress codes and Honorary Members, the situation will take care of itself.

What is it that fascinates you about wakeboarding? My roots are in snowboarding and I was absolutely happy when I finally found an alternative for the summer in 1998. Since then, I have been fascinated about the rapid development of wakeboarding, the style and the scene which is still like a big family.

Concerning construction and atmosphere, which is in your opinion the most spectacular cable park? You know I will say jetlake in Feldkirchen. But hey, with the entire infrastructure I really think Stefan Kastner managed to create a cable park where everyone enjoys hanging out after riding. Also the log-in-system which is now used worldwide was introduced at jetlake. Another good cable park is Langenfeld, where everything feels just right. And with the CWC on the Philippines Gov. L-Ray is upping the ante.

What makes the wakeboarding community so special? Like I said, I like it that the scene is not too big; people know one another and often you meet friends on the other side of the world. I hope it stays like this, I think we need no big head gangster shit.

aint pimpin

Are there developments in wakeboarding that annoy you? What annoys me is that there are two associations doing the same thing. Two world cups are just too much. I think it would be a good idea if the WWA determined an overall winner out of a global pro tour, just like the TTR in snowboarding. A WWA world champion title means nothing for sport organizations here in Europe. On the other side, there were not enough participants competing at the IWSF world championships in Russia. More cooperation is necessary.

What are the plans for the future concerning innovative wakeboard events? I think it is most important to get more visitors coming to our events. City contests like the Red Bull Wake The Line are a good idea: top action combined with good music and without long waiting periods, the audience has the feeling to be in the middle of the action; I think that’s the key to success. Although there are less and less waterskiers and more and more wakeboarders, the waterskiers still have a big lobby. What do you think is the reason? The waterskiers had a lot of time to organize themselves. However, the industry behind this sport is almost standing still and the marketing is not really working out. If the

What are your jobs and who do you represent? Basically, I am PR agent and do the press works for trend sport events and lifestyle brands. I am chief editor and co-founder of the online magazines snowboard.ag (.at) and wakeboard.ag. Additionally, I am responsible for the overall coordination of wakeboarding in the Austrian association, which means the Austrian team, the Austrian Wakeboard Cup etc. Since 2001, we have our Wakeboard.ag camps. In between there was the EM‘04, Open‘05 and WM’06. And since 2007 I am distributor of Ronix Wakeboards and TEN-80 in Austria. Which brands do you represent and why? I like Ronix Wakeboards because they are really innovative and stylish. The team behind Herb O’Brien has years of experience and already built up many brands. TEN-80 is the perfect addition and I especially like that cable wakeboarding plays such a big role for all marketing decisions of the company. Tom Foshee’s winning streak was interrupted. Who do you think will be rider of the year 2009? Since I watched a training session of Nick Davies in 2005, I bet on him every year. However, for him the most important thing is to have fun and thus he does not take the competition thing seriously enough. But that’s OK. Despite – or perhaps because of – that, I will bet on him again. wakeboarder europe magazine
