Este pequeño pueblo francés, cuyo nombre se deriva de la gran ciudad mediterránea, está muy ligado a nuestro país. Se trata de Barcelonnette, un pueblo hecho en México.

Llegar a Barcelonnette requiere maestría en el arte de conducir, pues hay que cruzar una carretera que se interna audazmente por el valle de l’Ubaye, rodeado por los Alpes. O bien, se puede tomar un vuelo a Marsella y luego el autobús para ahorrarse el trabajo, aunque la idea de detenerse donde uno quiera con su auto paga la osadía. Lo más sorprendente de estos caminos es la dificultad que tuvieron que enfrentar cinco mil personas que salieron de aquí hace casi dos siglos para emigrar a América, un continente del que sabían muy poco, salvo que ofrecía más oportunidades que la Europa de aquel entonces.

Catalanes en la Provenza, industria en México Pero hay que ir por partes, porque este pequeño pueblo ha pasado por muchas vicisitudes. En la Edad Media, los condes de Barcelona se hicieron de la Provenza mediante un enlace matrimonial —de ahí el nombre que recibió este poblado—, de modo que a quienes les gusta buscar cosas curiosas encontrarán aquí escudos catalanes en los sitios más recónditos.

Sin embargo, a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando en el valle de l’Ubaye no había grandes perspectivas de crecimiento y los inviernos parecían cada vez más crudos, muchos habitantes de Barcelonnette emigraron a América para trabajar en la industria de la seda y el algodón. Se asentaron en Luisiana, México, Brasil y Argentina.

Fue en México donde la suerte estuvo de su lado y pudieron prosperar como nunca imaginaron. Los primeros en llegar abrieron camino y llamaron a sus familiares y vecinos para que el sueño siguiera creciendo. Estos barcelonnettes aventureros se instalaron en las ciudades de México, Durango, Morelia, Guadalajara y Tampico, entre otras. Entre las empresas que establecieron se cuentan Liverpool, El Palacio de Hierro y Clemente Jacques. Ellos construyeron el primer edificio de estructura metálica en el país —El Palacio de Hierro—, así como el Centro Mercantil —el cual ostenta un bello domo vitral—, que hoy es un conocido hotel, ambos cerca del Zócalo de la ciudad de México. nombrar a Marcelo Ebrard, actual jefe de gobierno de la ciudad de México, y a Luis Eugenio Derbez, quien manejó las carteras primero de economía y luego de relaciones exteriores durante el gobierno de Vicente Fox. Con el tiempo algunos regresaron a su pueblo natal y comenzaron a dejar huella de su prosperidad mexicana, al tiempo que mostraban a los vecinos la recompensa por la arriesgada empresa en la que se embarcaron.

Entre 1870 y 1930, en los alrededores del núcleo medieval de Barcelonnette, construyeron bellas mansiones que fueron conocidas como villas mexicanas, para lo cual contaron con la participación de arquitectos de renombre venidos de París y de otras

grandes ciudades europeas. Estas villas recuerdan a México no tanto por su arquitectura —salvo la decoración interior en algunas de ellas—, sino por la historia que hay detrás de cada casa: esfuerzo, sacrificios y todo lo que la inmigración implicó.

Algunas de estas mansiones pueden visitarse durante el verano.

Una de las más impresionantes por su elegancia y dimensiones — La Sapinière— fue convertida hace pocos años en el Musée de la Vallée, donde se muestra la historia de Barcelonnette, incluyendo, desde luego, el largo viaje a México. También se exhiben interesantes fotografías y una colorida muestra de arte popular mexicano.

A lo largo de la Avenue de la Libération, donde se encuentra este museo, se aprecian varias villas de estilos arquitectónicos variados, rodeadas de grandes jardines, siempre con la intención de transmitir que el sacrificio inicial del viaje valió la pena. Para regresar al centro de la ciudad se puede ir por la calle Porfirio Díaz y conocer La Villa Bleue, construida por Camille Jean, fundador de la Francia 23

La ruta natural a pie nos lleva a las calles antiguas de la ciudad, salpicadas de tiendas llenas de productos regionales, souvenirs o ropa especial para quienes desean aventurarse en las diferentes actividades que se realizan en las montañas que rodean el valle, sobre todo en invierno, cuando la nieve sobra para esquiar.

En el centro del pueblo la presencia de México continúa: se puede tomar un café en la Plaza Valle de Bravo o dirigirse a la Plaza Manuel, donde se puede comer en alguna terraza y encontrar platillos de México en sus menús. En esa misma plaza se levanta una enorme tienda de arte popular mexicano y, en la esquina opuesta, el colorido de papel picado nos conduce a una librería en la que

se pueden encontrar libros en español, así como unas decorativas mariposas monarcas, capaces de llevar Michoacán a los propios Alpes. En el camino siempre habrá recordatorios del Festival Mexicano que se celebra anualmente en la ciudad durante el mes de agosto, y es cuando Barcelonnette habla nuestra lengua. Ahí se presentan grupos de música —desde los tradicionales mariachis o bailables típicos, hasta rockeros, jazzistas o el sabor musical de la salsa, el merengue e incluso el tango—, todo ello acompañado de proyecciones de cine latinoamericano y exposiciones de artes plásticas, o sobre diferentes aspectos de la historia común entre este pueblo y nuestro país. Si no quieres abandonar México en vacaciones, viaja a Barcelonnette, un rincón francés que no puede ser más mexicano. ◊

ou’ve got to be pretty sharp at the wheel to brave the hair-raising trip into the

What’s most amazing about this roadway is that two centuries ago 5,000 people traversed it on their exodus to the Americas, a place they knew very little about except that opportunities were greater there back then than in Europe.

Catalonians in Provence, Industry in Mexico Barcelonnette has gone through many transformations, so some background is in order.

In the Middle Ages, the house of the Count of Barcelona took control of Provence through marriage (thus the village’s name), and to this day, a keen eye can perceive signs of Catalonian influence in unexpected places all over town.

However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, job prospects in the l’Ubaye Valley were scarce and every winter seemed harsher than the last. Many people from Barcelonnette were driven to find work across the ocean, largely in the silk and cotton business. Most of them settled in Louisiana, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

In Mexico, Lady Luck smiled broadly on them, and they grew wealthy beyond their wildest expectations.
