Los habitantes de la capital de Bélgica han aprendido a reírse de la vida y eso se nota, entre otras cosas, en los murales callejeros de figuras icónicas del universo del cómic.

Ellos nos salen al paso para hacernos dudar de la verdad de este mundo.

The inhabitants of Belgium’s capital have learned to laugh at life. Granted, it’s hard to take anything seriously when iconic comic strip characters step out of the city’s street murals to make you doubt reality.

Llueve de manera necia. Podría caer de una sola vez toda esa agua del cielo, pero en esta parte del planeta llueve con la llave del agua semiabierta… para que moje todo el día y uno no termine de secarse nunca. Entonces, decido esconderme de manera necia también, en cada café, tienda y esquina interesante. Caigo, sin saberlo, o porque los dibujos de la entrada llamaron mi atención, en una de las tiendas más reconocidas de los adeptos al cómic: Brüsel.

Es un sitio de pasillos y recovecos iluminados a todo color por los cientos de objetos, libros y dibujos que hay ahí dentro. Los visitantes tienen cara de serios, porque el cómic es algo serio. “El noveno arte”, me dice un adolescente de indumentaria punk que, paradójicamente, tiene la revista Spirou en la mano, desde donde se escapa la imagen infantil de Tintin y otra de Lucky Luke, que contrastan con los tatuajes en sus brazos. Dice, además, que Spirou es la revista más antigua de tiras cómicas de Bélgica. “En serio”, remata.

Por indicaciones del cajero de Brüsel, adquiero un folleto en la oficina de turismo. Rodeado por la arquitectura gótica del Hôtel de Ville, en plena Gran Place, leo el folleto que me introduce al mundo del cómic y trato de entender un mapa diseñado con mucha audacia para embrollar hasta al más capacitado. Debajo de gárgolas medievales me entero de algunas verdades: los Pitufos son belgas —el punk no mentía—, y Spirou es la primera revista de su tipo en este país, donde han publicado los autores más famosos (Morris, André Franquin, Jijé, Hergé...). Existe además un espléndido museo dedicado a este mundo a sólo unas calles de donde me encuentro.

Un bienhumorado alcalde de la ciudad decidió hace algunos años llevar los cómics a la calle. Invitó a reconocidos graffiteros a pintar en los muros del centro a todos esos personajes con quienes muchos crecimos. Son tantos que, de hecho, hay una ruta de más de seis kilómetros para verlos uno por uno. Ahí es donde el mapa funciona, quizá, porque no hay ninguna señal que ayude a llegar a los murales.

It rains incessantly. It could rain cats and dogs and be done with it, but in this part of the world it drizzles all day long, a fine, irritating rain that never allows you to dry off completely. So I decide to get the better of it by hiding out in every café, store and street corner that looks remotely interesting.

Unawares, or perhaps because the drawings at the entrance attracted my attention, I walk into Brüsel, one of the city’s most popular comic stores. The aisles are brightly lit in every color of the rainbow and every nook and cranny is overflowing with objects, books and drawings. The customers have serious expressions, because comics are serious business here.

“The ninth art,” comments a punk teenager, who is holding an issue of Spirou. The childlike caricatures of Tintin and Lucky Luke on the cover seem at odds with his tattooed arms. He tells me that Spirou was the first comic book published in Belgium. “Seriously,” he adds.

The cashier at Brüsel recommends I buy a copy of the leaflet issued by the tourism office. So I take his advice and begin perusing it outside the gothic-style Hôtel de Ville in the middle of the Gran Place. It turns out to be an introduction to the world of comics and comes with a complicated map

Under the wary eyes of a couple of medieval gargoyles I discover it’s true that the Smurfs are Belgian —the punk wasn’t lying— and that Spirou was indeed Belgium’s first comic book, where the work of famous artists like Morris, André Franquin, Jijé, Hergé, etc. has been published. I also learn that there is a wonderful museum devoted exclusively to comics just a few streets from where I’m standing.

It was a city mayor with a good sense of humor who decided to take comic strips to the streets a few years ago. Renowned graffiti artists were invited to decorate the walls of the city center with the comic characters in whose company many of us grew up. There are so many of them that the mural route stretches for almost four miles. This is where the map comes in handy if you want to see them all, because other than sniffing them out, there’s no indication as to their whereabouts.

Milou barks from the walls I barely notice the rain anymore as I try to get my bearings on the mural route. Following the map has become a game, a rally to “collect” (albeit visually) all these images, like a race to see who can fill a sticker album first. Each character has its own mural: Tintin and his loyal companion Milou; Lucky Luke, Astérix and Obélix; Cubitus the dog —immortalized as he pees on the Manneken Pis—; Blondin and Cirage... Then the comic Mecca appears before my eyes: the Belgian Comic Center (Zandstraat 20; www. cbbd.be), housed in a beautiful listed art noveau building designed by Victor Horta, the Gaudí of Brussels.

Bruselas se convierte en un juego, en una especie de rally para “recoger” (aunque sea con la vista) esta colección de imágenes; es como llenar un álbum de estampas. Cada personaje tiene un mural: Tintin y su fiel compañero, Milou; Lucky Luke, Astérix y Obélix; el perro Cubitus —quien, capatado en plena travesura, hace pipí al Manneken Pis—; Blondin y Cirage...

Luego, a mi paso, aparece la meca de este mundo: el Centro Belga del Cómic (Zandstraat 20; www.cbbd.be), ubicado en un bello edificio estilo art noveau, patrimonio arquitectónico de la ciudad, obra de Victor Horta, el Gaudí de Bruselas.

Este lugar es un paréntesis en la vida. Afuera se queda cualquier cosa que no tenga que ver con la diversión, aunque, siguiendo aquello que me dijo el muchacho punk en la librería Brüsel, diversión con seriedad. Con trabajos originales y publicaciones diversas, este “museo” presenta la historia y desarrollo del cómic en Bélgica desde 1960.

Hay una colección de 7,000 bocetos originales, aunque sólo pueden exhibirse 200 a la vez a causa del espacio. También hay una tienda para dejar muchos euros y salir con objetos diversos, así como una biblioteca para extraviarse en la lectura de cómics de todos los tiempos.

La vida es un festival Tal parece que los belgas no pueden vivir sin contarse historias. Además de la narrativa secuencial (los cómics) en Bruselas también hay una gran tradición de cine —especialmente de cortometrajes— y este 28 de junio comienza uno de los festivales de cine más interesantes de Europa. Parte con la consigna de exhibir películas aunque también propicia la fiesta fílmica con proyecciones en las calles y la promoción de artistas locales.

Brüsel es una de las tiendas más reconocidas de los adeptos al cómic.

Brüsel is one of the favorite stores among comic fans.

Para amantes apasionados Nadie puede pisar Bélgica sin probar sus chocolates. Además, si el capricho es especializado, podrás encontrar chocolates de Tintin en Neuhaus. El local se encuentra en la casa que fuera del escritor Victor Hugo, en plena Gran Place. Si prefieres el chocolate más que otra cosa, visita la tienda Côte d’Or en la Place du Petit Sablon y de paso puedes ver cómo lo elaboran. Para comprar todo sobre cómics y la cultura del plástico está Brüsel (Blvd. Anspach 100), Multi BD (en la misma calle pero en el número 122), y para cambiar de nacionalidad pero no de tema, puedes comprar todo acerca del manga, los cómics japoneses, en Dong Co (Rue du Midi 33).

Salgo de ahí viendo el mundo con más colores que los habituales. La lluvia se convierte en una poética escena fantasiosa, capaz de desbordarse por encima de los edificios, y espero que en cualquier momento aparezca algún ser mitológico del siglo XXI que salvará al mundo. Pero no.

Para eso son los cuentos.

Aunque nada de esto sea real, dejo para otra ocasión el Museo de Arte Moderno, o la visita al pequeño Manneken Pis —este monumento nacional que no mide más de 60 centímetros— y me pierdo entre las mesas del café Le Cirio, un sitio con todo el aroma de la Europa del siglo XIX. No tengo en mi poder ninguna guía turística, sino a Pistolin, una obra desconocida de René Goscinny, el creador de Astérix, mientras afuera un gorila se dirige a dos bailarines tailandeses para tomarse una foto. (¿Será que ya no sé la diferencia entre la verdad y la fantasía?).

Atrapado en este mundo de caricatura, el mesero de Le Cirio me dice a bocajarro, con cara de seriedad, y sin que yo haya preguntado nada: “Este restaurante lo decoró en 1886 el creador del puré de tomate”, y después, sin más preámbulos, me sirve la sopa. (•) Inside its walls, reality is put on hold. This is serious entertainment as the punk at Brüsel so rightly pointed out.

Original sketches and a series of publications depict the history and evolution of the comic in Belgium since 1960. The collection consists of some 7,000 original works, although only 200 can be displayed at a time due to lack of space.

The museum also has a store that will literally devour your euros and a library where you can lose yourself in the fantastical worlds of comic books from every period.

I see the world in a different light when I finally emerge.

Colors are more intense and the rain takes on a poetic phantasmagorical power, capable of swelling into a tidal wave taller than a skyscraper. I half expect a mythological being from the future to appear at any moment and save me from the deluge. But no. That’s what comics are for.

I am beginning to doubt my grip on reality, so I decide to postpone my visit to the Museum of Modern Art and the Manneken Pis, a bronze fountain of a boy urinating, a landmark of Brussels that measures no more than 24 inches.

Instead, I take a seat at Le Cirio, a café that exudes the aromas of nineteenth-century Europe. I have no travel guide, so I take out my copy of Pistolin, an obscure work by René Goscinny, the creator of Astérix, while outside a gorilla has his photo taken with two Thai dancers. (Has the line between reality and fantasy grown that fuzzy?).

Trapped in a world of caricatures, the waiter at Le Cirio leans over and makes an unsolicited remark with a totally straight face: “This restaurant was decorated in 1886 by the inventor of tomato purée,” he says, proceeding to serve me my soup without further ado. (•)
