Sigue al conejo blanco… tiene prisa, un reloj de bolsillo y va de compras a Notting Hill. Ésa, la del conejo, fue la primera imagen que me iluminó cuando por primera vez toqué la avenida Portobello, la calle que cruza el célebre barrio de anticuarios de Notting Hill, en el corazón de Londres. Aquel legendario personaje de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas (“me voy, me voy, me voy, se me hace tarde hoy”) corría delante de mí para enseñarme el camino hacia las chácharas más extraordinarias que puede pedir tu imaginación, mientras yo marchaba ruta abajo por esta pintoresca avenida. De pronto, el conejo me rebasó vestido de paje de la Reina y se metió en una de las casitas con puerta de color brillante, como señalándome la extraordinaria y bien conservada arquitectura del lugar: Notting Hill es como estar dentro de un colorido pueblo del Bajío mexicano, que luego se convierte en el lugar donde compra sus pociones mágicas Harry Potter. Ésa es la sensación que uno obtiene de Notting Hill: un lugar donde el hechizo camina a plena luz del día, donde hasta las cosas más pequeñas cobran un brillo cegador y donde cualquier objeto que compres, puede hacer que tu casa seduzca con luz propia (ante la envidia de toda tu parentela).

Ningún barrio en el mundo sabe emular la forma de caminar de una despreocupada joven. Sólo Notting Hill, que sigue de forma sinuosa su Portobello Road. De hecho hay una vieja canción de Dire Straits llamada “Portobello Belle”, que apela justamente a eso, a la belleza natural de una

This image, the one of the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, was the first to spring to mind when I set foot on Portobello Road, the street that crosses the famous antiques district of Notting Hill in the heart of London.

He ran alongside me chanting “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date”, pointing out weird and wonderful bric-a-bracs as I went. Suddenly the rabbit overtook me dressed as a page boy and disappeared behind the brightly colored door of a terraced house, as if beckoning me to observe its well-preserved façade. Notting Hill is like a colorful town in Mexico’s Bajío region, a place where you can picture Harry Potter mixing his magic potions. This is the sensation you get here, of a village where magic is performed in broad daylight, where the smallest, most insignificant knick-knack you buy has the power to transform your home, like a philosopher’s stone, into a temple of blinding beauty (much to the envy of all your relatives).

No district in the world emulates the carefree gait of a young girl like Notting Hill as it winds its way along Portobello Road. In fact, there’s an old Dire Straits song called “Portobello Belle” that describes the innocent allure of a girl walking down this very same road, buying old buttons and paper rhinos as she goes. The entire district could be personified as a girl browsing through a bazaar; first she

El barrio completo es una mujer curioseando por un bazar; a veces la chica entra en tiendas de antigüedades (que se suceden una tras otra y en las que puedes encontrar desde mapas del siglo XV hasta vetustas cámaras de daguerrotipo), otras veces se “vuela” la cabeza en boutiques de diseñador o heladerías orgánicas unas cuadras más adelante. No importa lo que haga, la joven, esto es, el barrio, siempre lo hace con gracia, a pie, tomándose su tiempo, mirando los detalles y disfrutando accidentes londinenses típicos, como quedarse varada en un pub mientras deja pasar un chubasco.

Al mundialmente famoso barrio de Notting Hill se va a comprar, por supuesto, pero también a imaginar cómo era la vida antes de nuestras prisas a través de los objetos, antes de que todo fuera de plástico, reemplazable, con sólo un año de garantía y la única promesa de volverse obsoleto rápidamente. Para disfrutar de Notting Hill necesitas tiempo, al menos un par de tardes completas, así que ponte unos zapatos cómodos y acompáñanos en este pequeño tour.

Algo viejo, algo prestado, algo azul Aunque entres a muchas tiendas establecidas, la experiencia en Notting Hill siempre será como ir a un bazar muy antiguo, tal vez uno de gitanos; los personajes y las cosas interesantes van desfilando frente a ti, casi sin que lo puedas evitar.

It doesn’t matter what she does, she does it with class, taking her time, walking slowly, taking in every detail and relishing typical London accidents, like being stranded in a pub waiting for a downpour to pass.

People come to the world-famous district of Notting Hill to shop, but they also come here to imagine what life was like in the olden days, before everything was made of disposable plastic and came with a 12-month warranty, promising only to become obsolete before the year is out.

To enjoy Notting Hill you need time, at least two whole afternoons, so put on a pair of comfy shoes and join us on a very important date.

Something old, something borrowed, something blue There are plenty of “proper” stores, but you’ll come away from Notting Hill with the feeling you’ve just visited an ancient gypsy bazaar where eccentric characters and fanciful objects appear in front of you without being conjured up.

Lo mismo vas a encontrar candiles de cristal cortado pertenecientes a una antigua familia de nobles del siglo XVIII que ropa vintage, libros antiguos con pastas en piel, tazas, botes viejos, teléfonos, ceniceros, teteras, lupas y hasta LPs de los años treinta.

Una de las mejores tiendas está a unos cuantos metros de la estación del metro Notting Hill Gate. Se llama Alice’s y se mantiene abierta desde 1887. Todo, y aquí hay que ser enfáticos, todo lo que necesites para decorar una casa a la vieja usanza, estará esperándote ahí, en el número 86 de Portobello Road. Saluda a los enanos de cerámica y contempla los viejos carteles tomados de tabernas del siglo pasado. Es posible que te enamores a primera vista de la tienda Alice’s, pero sólo tienes que ver la que sigue y la que sigue —son aproximadamente 40 tiendas sólo de antigüedades en las que puedes perderte por horas—, para saber que ese amor no puede durar.

En tu caminata encontrarás también galerías de arte contemporáneo, librerías de segunda mano, organizaciones de caridad como Oxfam, tiendas de diseño, cafés, restaurantes, tiendas de especias, de sombreros… ¿ves lo que digo sobre el bazar de magia de Harry Potter? Será imprescindible que antes de llegar allá hagas una especie de “acordeón” con los lugares que realmente te interesan y, para ello, bien puedes darte una idea en la red. One of the best stores is a stone’s throw from the Notting Hill Gate station of the London Underground.

Established in 1887, Alice’s has everything you need, and I mean everything you need to decorate your home in the shabby chic style. It’s all here, at Number 86 Portobello Road. Ceramic gnomes greet you as you walk in the door and admire the old signs from turn-of-the-century taverns. You may think this is love at first sight, but Alice’s is just one of some 40-odd antique shops where you can spend literally hours on end perusing to your heart’s content. So play the field before committing…

Like Alice, you may find yourself lost in a maze of modern art galleries, secondhand book shops, charity organizations like Oxfam, design studios, cafés, restaurants, spice stores… So unless you have Harry Potter’s magical skills, it might be best to make a list of all the places you really want to visit before you arrive. Internet sites like www.allinlondon.co.uk, www.thehill.co.uk and www.mynottinghill.co.uk will give you a rough idea of what’s on offer and most come complete with updated information and addresses.

Aquí celebridades y millonarios caminan en shorts o toman un pint (la medida británica de cerveza) en el pub de la esquina —no te pierdas el Sun in Splendour, con jardín para fumadores (en el 7 de Portobello), ni el Duke of Wellington (en el 179)—. También es interesante interactuar con los dueños de las tiendas; algunos de ellos han vendido antigüedades durante 20 años y se toman muy a pecho su trabajo. El turismo les viene bien, pero ten cuidado, no les encanta ser centro de atracción ni quieren que su tienda sea una foto más, sino una verdadera opción de compra. Tourists are good for business and are treated well, but most antiquarians don’t take kindly to being the center of attention and prefer you to make a purchase instead of taking a photo of their storefront. Some will strike up a conversation before you even have a chance to say hello and will tell you the story of the Victorian house behind you; others will harp on bitterly about how this used to be a quiet district before Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts starred in the romantic comedy Notting Hill back in 1999.

Should you feel the pressing urge to visit all the locations that appear in the film, don’t worry; the locals are more than used to it. To the untrained eye, all the streets look the same, but it shouldn’t take you long to get your bearings in the maze with the aid of a few landmarks. Failing that, a friendly passerby will be able to point you in the right direction: “Turn at that yellow Indian boutique, the one that strong smell is coming out of (The Spice Shop at Number 1 Blenheim Crescent).”

The Travel Bookshop, the store William Thacker (Hugh Grant) allegedly owned, is at Number 13 Blenheim Crescent and, as its name suggests, specializes mainly in travel guides.

mente de cómo éste solía ser un barrio tranquilo antes de que Hugh Grant y Julia Roberts protagonizaran Notting Hill, aquella popular comedia romántica en 1999.

Por cierto, es posible que sientas la imperiosa necesidad posmoderna de visitar todas las locaciones de este referente cinematográfico: no te preocupes, los habitantes del barrio están más que acostumbrados. Notarás al principio que para el ojo poco entrenado las callecitas se presentan como un laberinto, pues lucen exactamente igual una a la otra, pero pronto sabrás encontrar una referencia única. “Date vuelta justo en la tiendita amarilla hindú, la que despide un olor penetrante, la tienda de especias (The Spice Shop en el número 1 de Blenheim Crescent)”, te dirá un local, tratando de marcarte alguna locación de la película. The Travel Bookshop, por ejemplo, aquella librería de la que era supuestamente dueño Hugh Grant, se encuentra situada en el número 13 de esa misma calle, y vende principalmente libros de viaje y especializados.

A unas cuantas cuadras, siempre tomando como columna vertebral las dos millas en pendiente que constituyen Portobello Road, podrás caminar, casi sin querer, cerca del famoso mural con la cara del dramaturgo irlandés Samuel Beckett, así como junto al restaurante 192, que hiciera popular Bridget Jones al encontrarse allí con sus novios. No pasará ni un minuto antes de que camines directo hacia el 280 de Westbourne Park Road, donde se encontraba la puerta azul (hoy famosísima) de la que salía diariamente William Thacker (Hugh Grant), pero que, después de ser subastada para obras de caridad, ha sido reemplazada por una anónima puerta negra.

To recap: you exit Notting Hill Gate station, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the rabbit-hole in Alice, only to find yourself trapped in a maze. You have to make a decision and quick because otherwise you won’t see all there is to see. London is huge and the sights are endless, but our advice is to chase the rabbit, who will lead you out of the maze and into the wonderland that is Notting Hill. (•)
