R enaissance M an J esse G reene We recently caught up with talented, artist, photographer and now designer, Jesse Greene to find out what inspired him and how he became a multi-facted creative. FOTR: For those who don’t know introduce yourself and what you do? Jesse: I’m Jesse Greene, another transplant from Chicago. I lived there (Chicago) til I was around 26 and then decided to move to Texas, in attempt to spread my work to different cities. I started getting into art seriously around ‘96 and started photography in ‘98. FOTR: What sparked your interest in art, fashion and photography? Jesse: When I was living in Chicago, I worked at a lot of art stores and boutiques. Around 2006 I managed a boutique named “Untitled” in Wicker Park and really got more into fashion photography and fashion culture, as a whole. I had been shooting a lot of corporate events and architecture but It really didn’t excite me, creatively, as much as fashion and artistic photography did. VICE Magazine played a big part in my influences as well as photojournalism and vintage xxx.
FOTR: How long have you been a creative? What was your first project that hinted at your creativity? Jesse: I’ve definitely been a creative all my life but professionally I’ve been producing work since 2000. My first creative project was probably something in high school. I was really into graffiti back then and we would do murals here and there. I’d do something little back then but I was always inspired because the subculture was unique at the time. Only a few people really even cared about graffiti so it was cool to see your friends doing murals, or ones that you did, and it made me feel more confident about displaying my work, and putting myself out there like that. cont’d... Continued...... FOTR: What is your creative process? Jesse: I’m generally working on multiple projects at one time. I’d say right now I’m working on about 9 different projects but I space the exhibition or release dates apart accordingly and then somehow allocate time to create the work for these events in the same manner. I’ve been doing it so long now it just kind of works itself out. I try not to overthink anything when I shoot photos, and when I’m painting, its just a stream of consciousness. Everything I do is almost 100 percent spontaneous and planned as minimally as possible. FOTR: What piece of art or project are you most proud of? Jesse: I honestly couldn’t answer that only because I’m equally proud of everything I do. I love my finished products, but there are also a lot of paintings I have that are only 20, 30, 40 percent done and they have the same potential to me I just have to approach them at the right time. I’m also still creating so I could make something tomorrow and it might just be my greatest work. As long as I’m creating I will never have a favorite I guess. I’ve had some great gigs but the work was not in my mind a pure representation of me as an artist today. It just wasn’t developed yet and I hold on to that memory but I’m more proud of the gig itself than the art... It was for Lollapalooza in 2005. FOTR: Tell us about your streetwear designs? Jesse: So the design concept is basically me putting one of my paintings on a garment. I called it Re:purposed because its about the re-purposing of something you thought had no purpose anymore. We all have a jacket or a pair of jeans we don’t wear anymore because they’re faded or ripped and we never look at them again. My concept in to simply redesign it. I’m no good with fabric but if it’s already built for me, I can definitely make it look 100 times cooler.

FOTR: Any advice for anyone interested in pursuing art, fashion design or photography? Jesse: First off art, fashion design, and photography are career choices that require a huge amount of tact, patience, discipline and money while thinking freely and taking creative risks. My biggest words of advice would be to be patient, fearless, and carefree, but most of all be happy with not getting rich quick, or possibly ever. Most importantly, invest in yourself but never assume your investment is congruent with you actual creative abilities. FOTR: Where do you see your brand in the next 9 months? Jesse: I have my first runway show in the works for October and I’m putting together a new collection for the spring 2020. You can see more of Jesse’s work on his website www. jessegreeneart.com and on Instagram @jessegreene_

GLOBAL STREET WEAR
Streetwear Nation What does streetwear mean to you? A writer from Inverse Culture states, “Streetwear fashion is contemporary, usually casual clothing that is worn by urban youth subcultures. That definition is vague as streetwear is an all-encompassing umbrella of styles & themes - similar in vein as the hip-hop genre is to music”. That being said, have you ever wondered how street style looks around the world? What are the cultural influences and similarities the street wear nation have in common? In order to capture the art, fashion, lifestyle and the culture of streetwear we have partnered with photographers from around the globe to get their perspective on street wear through their images. From China, Tokyo, Europe and the U.S. we have you covered. .

Houston has been home to one of the largest community based sneaker events for over 10 years now with the Sneaker Summit. This summer we are excited to see that they have branched out and will be producing another event focusing on women. We spoke with Ms Tausha Sanders, one of the Sneakher Summit founders about the upcoming summit. FOTR: Can you give us some insight into your background and interest in the sneaker culture? Tausha: I have my Bachelors Degree in Fashion Marketing. College I feel like this is when I started taking sneakers and street wear more seriously. I took an internship at a skate shop and started becoming more aware of the sneaker releases. I also attended my first sneaker show in 2012 in Houston, ironically it was the Sneaker Summit. After I graduated college I interned at a e-commerce street wear company called Karmaloop. FOTR: Who or what are your influences? Tausha: Other women influence me everyday, I love seeing women win! I am motivated by women supporting me, women have been so supportive ever since I started SneakHer Summit. Also, seeing other women succeeding in the industry is extremeinfluential, there are so many women doing great things for the culture and killing all those stereotypes.

FOTR: How did you come up with the idea or become involved with the Sneaker Summit? Tausha: I spent a year and a half at Karmaloop and decided to pursue other options in Houston. I reached out to Sneaker Summit and they hired me on as their Social Media Manager. In 2016 the Sneaker Summit Storefront opened and I became the store manager. FOTR: Why did you branch out and create the Sneakher Summit? Tausha: Everyone knew me as the “Sneaker Summit Girl and brands started reaching out to me. I initially wanted to branch out and do my own thing, but I ended up deciding on doing the female division of Sneaker Summit. I launched SneakHer Summit in February of 2018 with my girl Wendy Franklin. We wanted to showcase women in the industry and throw dope sneaker events tailored toward women. 28

FOTR: What do you think about the current role women play in the sneaker game? Tausha: The past couple years I think brands have been really paying attention to women, as they should! Women in sneakers are no new thing, it’s crazy we are just now getting the shoes and attention we’ve been asking for. It’s funny cause a lot of men run these sneaker companies. and think they know what we want and usually get it all the way wrong. We honestly want the same stuff the men have but in our size! Women play a huge role behind the scenes too. We are the ones planning these events, spearheading these marking campaigns and styling your favorite celebrities. FOTR: Which brands do you feel does a good job appealing to women? Tausha: Puma has done well, bringing in Rihanna was huge and they have thrown some dope events just for women. Jordan brand has also been good at bringing in females to design women’s shoes as well as releasing women only sneakers. Reebok has a great history of collaborating with female designers, including Leah McSweeny and Melody Ehsani. Of course Adidas killed the game when they signed on Beyonce and Ivy Park, I am really excited to see what they come up with. FOTR: What are some of the things you hope to achieve with this event? Tausha: My main goal every show is to make it memorable and enjoyable for the guests! I always say the difference between Sneaker Summit and other events is that we put on a production, we put on a show, it is so much more than a sneaker convention. I wanted to make sure the most recent show we did in January was “Super Houston” because that’s what ultimately separates us from other shows. That Holiday show we had Bun B perform, PJ Tucker shopping, custom foam cups and Swisha House do a 45 minute DJ set; what’s more Houston than that? I love having people who have never attended come and check it out, I can say all this about the show but you really gotta be there to understand how crazy it is. FOTR: What can guests expect when they attend the event? Tausha: PThis season we are keeping the “Houston” theme to celebrate our 16 years in the game. We are finally back at NRG, so we will have tons more space to play with! You’ll catch all the local legends including: Bun B, Slim Thug, Paul Wall. SneakHer Summit will have a booth for the first time this year. Our VIP lounge will be better than ever and completely revamped. We will definitely have a few surprises, this is for sure going to be one for the books. SneakHer Summit will take place on 7/28/19 For more info visit their website: www.sneakersummit.com Instagram: @SneakerSummit @SneakHerSummit
