PASTOR’S THOUGHTS SENIOR PASTOR SAM VALVERDE
MORE ELEPHANTS IN THE ROOM d “Again the Kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good unto vessels, but cast the bad away.” Matthew 13:47, 48 This month we will address delicate subjects. Remember, the term “elephant in the room” refers to a topic that everyone knows must be addressed, but no one really wants to start that conversation. Some topics are easy to address. For example, salvation by grace, mercy, faith and God’s love are subjects that are readily accepted by most people. However, when addressing themes that revolve around obedience, holiness standards and abstinence of certain things, people may react or at best, get real quiet. The fact is that when the net of the gospel is launched, it brings “of every kind.” Every one of us that was “caught” by the gospel came with our very own hurts, habits, hang-ups; our weirdness is custom made. However, God forgives, forms and conforms us to his word. One commentary states: “...The worthless (fish),” are “the wicked”; and “the excellent (fish),” are, “the righteous.” In what sense the former are wicked the second term shows: they lack the righteousness that avails before God. The parable deals with all those who are caught by the great gospel net. All kinds and conditions of men are swept into its meshes, but these are of two classes. Here on earth both are mixed together in the outward body of the church. They all confess and profess faith, but not all are vere credentes and thus pronounced “righteous” by the divine Judge. Some are hypocrites, sham Christians, mere adherents of the church, etc... The other extreme is the liberalism which discards the Scriptural church discipline. Therefore in two of these first seven parables (v. 24, etc.) Jesus points us to the consummation with its divine separation of the false Christians from the true 1 Jesus continually spoke of separation of “lambs and goats” (Matthew 25:32, 33) and “wheat and tares” (Matthew 13:26). In the future, there will be a separation in of the good and evil. However, we are also asked to live a holy, separated life here on earth. More and more we see the customs of the world showing up in our churches. Some of these manifestations are exterior with matters of recreation, dress and other outward things, and some are interior tolerances of sin, wrong attitudes and sometimes quiet rebellion. This month the messages will deal with these delicate issues. And we will do so from an apostolic and Apostolic Assembly perspective. There are more elephants in the room. Please advise your friends that these messages are for the church. ____________________________________________ 1 Lenski, R. C. H. (1961). The Interpretation of St. Matthew’s Gospel (pp. 548–549). OCTOBER SERMON SERIES - MORE ELEPHANTS IN THE CHURCH
Friday, October 17, 2014 7:00pm in the sanctuary
Sunday, October 5, 2014 “It’s the Inside that Counts, Isn’t it? (Dress and Adornment Part I) You are attending a church function in another city and were told that a couple you’ve never met would be picking you up at the airport. As you stand there, a young man and women, dressed in gothic black from their 6-inch spiked hair to their black nails walks by. Is that them? Why not? A sensuous women in a mini skirt and her adoring man walking behind her pass by. Is it them? Why not? This message will deal with aspects of decency and modesty of Christian apparel.
HE will supply our needs. HIS grace is sufficient. HE will deliver us. HE will give us the victory.
THINK PINK! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Fountain of Truth would like to bring awareness of this deadly disease affecting thousands of women. Wear pink on October 19, 2014. Let’s make it a Pink month!
“OUR NAKED MARRIAGE” A seminar for married and engaged couples Saturday, November 1, 2014 6:00pm - 9:00pm (“Mingler” from 5pm - 6pm) This seminar will expose the sins which can destroy our relationship and bring to light some hidden “issues” affecting marriages today. Topics will be: • “Rated x (sin) to Rated G (God)” • “The Naked Truth” • “Leaving the lights on” • Plus real life testimonies of victorious marriages who beat the odds! Donation is $25.00 per couple Registration begins October 5, 2014
Sunday, October 12, 2014 “If it’s not a Matter of Salvation, What’s the Big Deal?” (Dress and Adornment Part II) What does the bible really say about the use of jewelry, make-up and other practices prohibited by the disciplines of many apostolic churches. Are we out of touch with reality, or have we lost our standard of holiness? We will visit this subject using historical, biblical, social and hermeneutic tools. Sunday, October 19, 2014 “Sensuality, Immorality and Perversion Right under our Nose” (A biblical look at fornication, adultery, homosexuality, and all sins of the flesh) Twenty years ago if a couple committed fornication, the entire church would morn. Fast forward to today. Church members are involved in orgies, homosexual acts, casual sex, bisexualism and all variants of sexual perversion - but “I still love Jesus,” some may say. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” This message will highlight some of those commandments and encourage us to hold on to them. The world applauds and encourages life-styles that contradict God’s principles. Shouldn’t the church stand up and encourage a pure life-style? Sunday, October 26, 2014 “Accessible Sin, Available Grace” (PASTOR PHIL RAYA) Sin abounds. Immorality is trendy. Political correctness is the rule. The church sometimes seems judgmental in an era of moral relativism. Is this simply the current culture or is it something more? We will discover how today is an “easy” time to sin, yet it’s also an easy time to experience Christian growth. Christians are truly engaged in the War of the Worlds. As you can see, we will be dealing with delicate but important matters. This too is part of preaching salvation. Respectfully,
Pastor Sam Valverde
