WINTER 2020

THE FOUR ARTS HOSTS FIRST POLLOCK BROTHERS EXHIBITION The Society of the Four Arts’ winter art exhibition, Charles and Jackson Pollock, brings together, for the first time, art by two brothers: Jackson Pollock (19121956), the most famous and arguably the most important American painter of the 20th century, and Charles (19021988), his eldest brother, whose career and reputation are less well-known. The exhibition is co-curated by Four Arts President & CEO Philip Rylands and Otto Hübner, and underwritten by members of the exhibition’s eponymous Leadership Committee (please see Page 21 for more details). Jackson Pollock’s career has been welldocumented, including a 2001 movie biography starring Ed Harris. His gestural drip painting became the prototype of what Harold Rosenberg would call “Action Painting” and the hallmark of Abstract Expressionism, the first American avantgarde of international influence. This exhibition features around 20 works of Jackson Pollock, revealing a side of the artist little known to the general public through paintings, drawings, his sole -Continued on Page 4

-Charles and Jackson Pollock, continued from Page 1 surviving sculpture, and a wide selection of prints. “The prints, drawings, and pages from a sketch notebook reveal more of his inner workings,” said Rebecca A. Dunham, The Four Arts’ head of fine arts and curator. “You can see him working out ideas before implementing them in a finished artwork. Most people know of Jackson Pollock from his drip paintings, but this exhibition touches upon other aspects of his life and his creative family.” Charles took up painting and drawing at the age of 15, fascinating his four younger brothers, and encouraged Jackson to pursue art. It was Charles who brought Jackson to New York City to study at the Art Students League under Thomas Hart Benton, and both were indoctrinated with Benton’s Regionalism. While Jackson stayed on in New York City, eventually turning to abstraction, and becoming a central figure in the nascent avantgarde, Charles moved to Michigan, first working for the WPA before accepting

VIRTUAL LECTURE: January 27, 2021 at 2:30 p.m.

David Anfam is a leading authority on modern American art. In 2016-17 he curated the exhibition Abstract Expressionism at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, the largest survey of its kind held in Europe.

This Campus master class concludes with a talk on Jackson Pollock, whose “Abstract Expressionism” signaled the end of the abstract tradition begun with the pre-World War I avant-garde.

a professorship at Michigan State University. He too, in the mid1940s, turned to abstraction. The exhibition displays about 70 of Charles Pollock’s works, including a wide variety of drawings, prints, and paintings organized chronologically into thematic groupings. Visitors can trace Charles’ development from his Chapala series in the 1950s to his “Post-Rome” works in the 1960s to his Arches series in the 1980s. “Charles’ work is more structured and resembles ‘color field’ painting,” Dunham said. “It’s more contemplated, where Jackson’s work is more about whatever was flowing creatively out of him at that moment. Charles has a different mode of operation, a different way of creating an abstract work.”

Hübner, the director of the American Contemporary Art Gallery in Munich, Germany, which represents Charles Pollock’s estate, helped The Four Arts organize the exhibition. “This is not a pre-packaged, traveling show,” Dunham said. “This has been specifically designed in-house by Dr. Rylands, and all the artworks are borrowed from various private collectors or institutions. It’s a unique audience experience, the first-ever exhibition pairing of these brothers.”

The exhibition also features two four-legged stools used by Jackson Pollock as he produced his works, along with two photos of Jackson at work by famed art photographer Hans Namuth. “These photographs show Jackson Pollock as most people think of

him, working on his action drip paintings,” Dunham said. “You can see how all the various drips and splashes of paint refer back to how he was moving his hands and moving the paint stick. You can see the gestures and you understand that the artist was making art that was the outcome of the movements of the body.” A self-guided tour is available for smartphones by clicking on fourarts.oncell.com. Please bring your headphones to enjoy the tour. The Four Arts hopes that visitors to this exhibition gain a deeper understanding of Jackson Pollock and a welcome introduction to Charles Pollock. “While Jackson Pollock was the more important painter during his lifetime,” Dunham said, “this show sheds light on the fact that Jackson had an older brother Charles who was also an extremely gifted and talented painter.”

Last chance to see Ubuhle Women and In God We Trust There is still time to take in the Four Arts’ first two art exhibitions of the season. Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence, runs through January 17. This exhibition showcases a new form a bead art, the ndwango, developed by a community of women living and working in rural South Africa. The artists featured in the exhibition call their paintings in beads ndwangos, which translates as “cloth” or “rag.” The black fabric on which the Ubuhle women work is reminiscent of the Xhosa headscarves and skirts which many of them grew up wearing. By stretching this textile like a canvas, the artists transform the flat cloth into a contemporary art form colored with Czech glass beads. The exhibition includes a free 32-page gallery guide and a 15-minute video, both created by the Smithsonian, and black-and-white photographic portraits of the Ubuhle artists taken by worldrenowned South African photographer Zanele Muholi. Rare book and history aficionados will enjoy In God We Trust: Early Bible Printings and Founding Documents from the David M. Rubenstein Americana Collection, an extraordinary exhibition of historic American Bibles, religious texts, and historic documents. This exhibition, which also runs through January 17 and then returns January 30 though February 28, features 18 books and five founding documents from the Americana Collection of Mr. Rubenstein, a prominent American businessman and philanthropist. Organized by the New-York Historical Society in collaboration with Mr. Rubenstein, In God We Trust presents the stories of these artifacts and the ingenuity and diversity of the early Americans who made them.

Dale Chihuly, an American artist noted for revolutionizing the studio glass movement and elevating perceptions of the glass medium, brings installations of Fiori (Italian for “flowers”) to The Society of the Four Arts beginning January 18, 2021. The two installations — which will be placed in the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden — are comprised of Black and Yellow Herons and Red Bulbous Reeds,

each demonstrating the artist’s penchant for organic, free flowing forms that evoke the natural world. “I love to juxtapose the manmade and the natural to sort of make people wonder, are they manmade or did they come from nature? That’s a very important part of my work.” said Dale Chihuly. Known for ambitious architectural

installations in cities, museums, and gardens around the world, Chihuly utilizes a variety of media to realize his creative vision, including glass, paint, charcoal, neon, ice, and Polyvitro. Happy retirement, Kathy Mardambek! Director of Finance and Administration steps down after 27 years of service The Society of the Four Arts is losing a beloved longtime staffer as Kathy Mardambek, Director of Finance and Administration, has announced her retirement. Kathy came to The Four Arts in 1993 and is now moving to Golden, Colorado to babysit full-time for her grandson, Fyfe, born this past September to her son Jeremy and his wife Nicky. “I am leaving a beautiful place in Palm Beach where I have worked for over 27 years. Plus, having lived in neighboring Lake Worth for almost 60 years, I will miss very much the only place I have called home. It is also possible that I will only be in Colorado a short while as my son has announced that his family is considering relocating back to Salt Lake City, Utah next year. I could be on the move again — I’ll be following my grandson!” Mardambek started at The Four Arts with the title of Accountant, sharing a small office in the Esther B. O’Keeffe Building with three other staffers in the space above the Walter S. Gubelmann Auditorium. “My first major assignment was working with the Four Arts Gala Chairmen on the biennial fundraising event. If you can imagine, the Gala Chairmen and I mapped out the event seating the old-fashioned way on big whiteboards with markers and erasers in my office. It was an ‘all hands-on deck’ process and in the end this was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, seeing the beautiful tent and theme all come together that evening. Working on the Gala Dinner Dance was a fantastic introduction to the organization and its members during my first season”, Mardambek said. Throughout the years, Kathy has worked closely with several Chairmen on the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees. “I have loved the challenges as the organization has expanded throughout the years,” she said. “It has been very enjoyable to work with such wonderful,

professional, and supportive leaders at the Four Arts, including four Presidents and five Board Chairs.” Kathy’s love of the arts has been nurtured through her time here at The Four Arts. “I am so appreciative that above and beyond the job, there was the opportunity to grow and learn so much about art, music, and literature thanks to the remarkable programs and the wonderful Joseph and Gioconda King Library with its vast film collection. And what really surprised me was the joy I now find in opera through the Metropolitan Opera HD Live series. My love of opera was totally unexpected,” she said. But when asked about her favorite all time Four Arts program, Mardambek said, “Who could forget the fabulous Isabelle de Borchgrave costume exhibition in 2018. In my opinion, it was the most spectacular exhibition that we have ever seen. I would go back again and again to see it because I missed a tiny detail such as a button, some stitching, or the lace on one of those exquisite period paper dresses.” “It seems to me that it is very rare to have a job that you love and that educates and enriches your life. I consider myself so fortunate to have had these 27 years at The Society of the Four Arts.”

Wu Han joins Four Arts team

The Society of the Four Arts proudly welcomes Wu Han to our team as an Artistic Advisor for Classical Music in partnership with Director of Programs Sofia Vollmer Maduro. The world-renowned pianist and her husband, cellist David Finckel, are co-directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CSMLC) and return to The Four Arts as Beyer Artists-in-Residence this season, leading an “Around Dvořák” festival from February 7 through February 14. The Four Arts conducted an email interview with Wu Han in November as she was preparing for four concerts in Taiwan. The Four Arts: You have performed at The Society of the Four Arts many times. What are your favorite memories of being in Palm Beach? Wu Han: My favorite memories are from the week of my first residency in 2019 as the Beyer Artist-inResidence. This was the first time that I was able to spend a considerable amount of time on the beautiful Four Arts grounds, not only performing for the most enthusiastic audience, but also mounting a festival with opportunities to engage meaningfully with the Palm Beach community. I was so fortunate to meet Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Beyer, to whom I am eternally grateful for their support of this residency. The weeklong festival enabled us to delve deeply into a specific

subject, including educational activities and outreach events, and was incredibly rewarding. I hope the audience learned from this intense week, as I know my musicians certainly felt enriched by the project. How would you rate the Walter S. Gubelmann Auditorium as a venue for chamber music? Wu Han: I have been playing at Four Arts for many years now, and it is always wonderful to return. For me, returning to the Gubelmann Auditorium always feels like coming home. The Auditorium is really a gem: the perfect size for chamber music, great acoustics, an elegant setting. An experienced concert artist could not ask for more.

Wu Han: Designing a concert program is like being the curator in the world’s largest musical museum. It takes a curatorial point of view to organize the vast repertoire of classical music and ensure that the audience has the most satisfying journey of great performances and cohesive programs. The highest quality artists and carefully crafted programs will guarantee our discriminating Four Arts audience an enriching experience. I can promise that they will experience the best that classical music can offer, as well as some adventurous journeys that will deepen their knowledge and appreciation of this amazing art form. Tell us about your upcoming Beyer Artist-in-Residence festival, “Around Dvořák.” Wu Han: In this stressful pandemic year, I know that music will definitely uplift our spirits, and I could not find a more appropriate three programs to do just that. In the chamber music world, Dvořák has to be one of the most beloved composers. The diverse programming during the residency week will bring you some of the most world’s most beloved and glorious music. Dvořák had the most amazing talent for writing music that both sings and elevates. In the three programs that I designed for you, not only will you enjoy great music, but you also will learn about Dvořák’s life and times, from his emerging as the greatest Bohemian composer to his friendship with Brahms, and his consequential visit to the United States. These are the most enjoyable programs, filled with surprise, drama, and delicious

Just like in our 2019 residency, I also look forward to spending time with our community through master classes at Lynn University, musical discussions, and open rehearsals. I simply cannot wait. We look forward to having you here in Palm Beach. Anything else you would like to add? Wu Han: Music has the power to

elevate and to inspire. With this stressful pandemic year, we all understand music can bring us beauty and hope. To have art and music in our lives is what makes a civilized society. I am extremely honored to be associated with this distinguished organization and I look forward to many more opportunities to bring the best music to Four Arts and to serve this organization. Barrett, Gubelmann star in finding gems for Film Series Chances are that Dr. Diana Barrett and Mrs. Shelley Gubelmann have seen a lot of good films lately. Barrett is the Chairman of the Film Committee at The Society of the Four Arts, where she is assisted by long-time committee member Gubelmann. Both are dedicated to ensuring that the Four Arts’ Film Series features entertaining selections, including second-run hidden gems, documentaries, and screenings that complement the season’s programming. “We are so fortunate to have Diana Barrett and Shelley Gubelmann on our Film Committee,” said Director of Programs Sofia Vollmer Maduro. “They each screen many films a season to find the best choices. Our audiences can rest assured they will be entertained in the Walter S. Gubelmann Auditorium!” Dr. Barrett has served on the committee for nearly five seasons and is Founder of the Fledgling Fund, an organization that works at the intersection of film and social change with the mission of championing stories to inspire a better world. Her goal at The Four Arts is to “curate the exceptional.” She notes that many streaming services are helpful in finding selections. Due to her professional involvement with the Sundance Film Festival, Dr. Barrett has also the privilege of prescreening films and documentaries and often keeps them in consideration to be

film committee in 1985 and has noticed several trends during her service. She has found that Helen Mirren and Judi Dench always generate large audiences, and viewers who may be less inclined to read subtitles at home often find them easier to enjoy when presented on the big screen.

Most interested in “story arcs” and films that educate as well as entertain, Dr. Barrett fondly remembers when the Four Arts screened the documentary “Obit”, which follows New York Times Obituary writers and their working lives. The film’s director was present at the screening and was able to talk with the audience. She is also interested in following the span of an actor’s career, such as Nicole Kidman or Julianne Moore. This season, Dr. Barrett’s standout recommendation is “Song of Lahore,” on March 26, which follows Pakistani musicians on a journey to perform with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center. Mrs. Gubelmann first joined the

Her formula for a successful season includes a variety of films across several categories. She believes viewers occasionally like to see classic movies, but secondrun films, independent selections, and popular European titles tend to be the most well-received. This season, Mrs. Gubelmann’s top recommendation is the January 15 sleeper hit “Peanut Butter Falcon” because it is “poignant, funny, and a must-see.” Winter 2021 Folio

Philip Haas The Four Seasons

Originally scheduled to close in December, contemporary American artist Philip Haas’ The Four Seasons (2010) exhibition has been extended through March 31.

features of the four figures are rendered in floral, fruit and vegetables appropriate to each season. Haas’s interpretations made in 2010 are puzzles crafted with flowers, ivy, moss, fungi, vegetables, fruit, trees, bark, branches, and twigs. Haas’s sculptures also offer a revelatory viewing experience: he recreates two-dimensional paintings as three-dimensional forms, allowing viewers to walk around them and witness nature’s rhythmic cycles from different vantage points.

The group of painted fiberglass sculptures are inspired by the portrait series by Italian Mannerist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526/1527– 1593), in which the physical
