FROM THE

General Manager

De a r Fou r Se a sons G ol f

and

Sports Club Members,

S WE START A NEW DECADE and enter our 38th year of existence, I’m reflecting on everything

the Resort and Club has meant to Members over the years. We have certainly changed and grown with the times, adding innovative programs and modernizing services and growing our membership in all categories, but at the same time we’ve managed to maintain our essential character and sense of heritage as being the best club in our competitive set in the marketplace. Striking that balance has been the key to our longevity and success, and our future looks brighter than ever. I’m excited about the decade ahead, and would like to share a few of our planned initiatives for 2020: •Expand and renovate the Members Lounge to accommodate the dining needs of our growing membership and create a special place where members feel a true sense of belonging to the Club and are proud to invite and share with friends and family. This project also includes significant expansion and enhancement to the outdoor seating areas and will include more fire pits and shaded areas for all members to enjoy. •Complete renovation of the Men’s and Ladies locker rooms with all new amenities and special features that will create enhanced experiences and new spaces for social activities. We will be adding as many new lockers as possible to the new locker rooms to accommodate the demand. •Expansion of our Mind-and-body wellness programs with the addition of many new classes and offerings for our members. We will also be enhancing and growing the main fitness floor with the addition of new, innovative equipment and amenities that will enhance the fitness experience and eliminate any wait time. •The tennis courts will be resurfaced to bring them to a level that is best-in-class for our facility and new amenities and enhancements will certainly create the best tennis experience for our members and their guests. In addition, the Tennis programming and events will continue to grow to accommodate the growing participation we are having in this sport with membership. •The Golf Courses will be provided the resources to maintain their prestigious quality in 2020. We have all new bunkers on both golf courses and recently added almost one million dollars of new equipment to our fleet that will certainly give Anthony Williams and his great team the best possible chance to stay ahead of mother nature for yet another season. We are also continuing to assess and plan for a new irrigation system on the Cotton Wood Valley course in the near future as well as continued enhancements to the driving range facility in accordance with the master plan for this area. Our 2020 focus and beyond will remain on increasing the value of your membership with every decision that is made throughout the organization. We are excited about the potential initiatives above and those that are already in progress as well as the many that we have planned on the horizon. We are currently working on due diligence for every project and once we have a finalized plan and start dates for the projects we will communicate to the entire membership. We have many new faces in our staff to add value and enhance your club experience. A healthy club is a growing club and membership over the past 12 months we have seen positive new member growth. We are thankful for all of the members who have supported the club over the past 38 years and my entire staff has truly enjoyed getting to know all our members this year as well as the many new members that have joined us in 2019. We look forward to continuing to form relationships throughout the upcoming year that will allow us to take the Club experience to unprecedented heights. Also, please do your best in joining the Champions Club, our member referral program, in 2020. Information about this program and benefits can be found on the Club website at www.thesportsclubfourseasons.com or can be accessed on the Club APP. See you at the Club,

Golf

Par for the Course By Mike Kiesling, Director of Golf

The kick off to the 2020 Golf Season is around the corner. As the new director of golf, I am extremely excited

for our membership and all of the new opportunities to enjoy the game of golf. So, what exactly is new for 2020? 1. Monthly Couples Golf Association Events - Starting in March 2. Friday Night Couples - Starting in April 3. Monthly Junior Golf Events Starting in February 4. Weekly Women’s Instructional Programs - Starting in April 5. Weekly Men’s Golf League Starting in April 6. New Men’s Golf Association Events 7. Club Match Play Championship Now that the weather and golf action is heating up, how can we as golfers ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the same experience we had? It really starts with respecting everyone else on the course. Are we fixing ball marks, raking after ourselves in bunkers, and sanding our divots? What is our position on the course, and are we keeping up with the group in front of us? Often times we look to the course marshals to enforce rules and etiquette, or to the maintenance staff to fix ball marks and sand divots, but the ownership lies 100% with the golfer. Take our new ball mark repair tools out for a spin the next time you play a round. March is our major golf course maintenance month when we give the green the first aerification of the year. The first aerification of the year is generally

10

WINTER /SPRING 2 02 0

the largest core pulled. Golfers often ask, “Why is aeration needed?” Aeration is an essential program to keep playing surfaces healthy and in good condition. Aeration primarily is performed to control organic matter, decaying roots and grass stems, relieve soil compaction, stimulate root growth and improve drainage. If organic matter becomes too thick, it acts like a sponge and holds water at the surface after rain or irrigation. Excessive organic matter also inhibits root growth, reduces oxygen levels in the soil, encourages disease and eventually can lead to turf failure. Furthermore, excessive organic matter creates soft surfaces prone to ball marks, foot printing and inconsistent playing conditions. Aeration and topdressing are the most effective ways to control organic matter and maintain smooth, firm putting surfaces. Core aeration involves physically removing small soil cores from the turf and is the most common type of aeration. Aeration holes allow excess moisture to evaporate and promote gas exchange in the soil, resulting in stronger root systems and turf that is better able to tolerate foot traffic. Proper timing of aeration will ensure the fastest possible recovery and return to smooth surface conditions. The key to a quick recovery is to perform aeration when the turf is healthy and actively growing. There are many types of aeration

• LIFEstyle M AGA ZINE

that superintendents use throughout the season; some are more labor-intensive and disruptive to playing surfaces than others. Less-disruptive forms of aeration, including venting aeration with smalldiameter, solid tines, are also beneficial because they can alleviate turf stress by promoting oxygen levels in the soil. Aeration programs that have a small impact on a playing surface generally can be performed throughout the season with little or no disruption to play. The type and frequency of aeration needed is course specific. Superintendents adjust aeration programs based on soil conditions, turf requirements, climate/weather, available labor and equipment, course events, etc.

HOW TO

JUNIOR GOLF

GetYour Kid Started in Golf

By Jack Danshmand

YOUTH GOLFERS ARE THE FUTURE OF OUR GAME! Parents should consider introducing their kids and their kid’s friends to the game of golf. Not doing so would be a missed opportunity to develop skills applicable to both life and sport. Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club offers a tiered program for kids as young as five and all the way through high school.

FOUR SEASONS Golf and Sports Club Junior Golf Programs SNAG – For youngsters brand new to golf between the ages of 5-7. Development – For youth who have consistent contact with the ball, experience on the course and basic knowledge of the rules. PGA Junior League – A team format playing matches against other country clubs. Interclub – For those who would like to compete in offsite tournaments as well as play high school golf. Champions – Elite players who play offsite tournaments and can shoot below 40 on 9-holes.

12

Number to Keep Kids WayInterested

the

The key to keeping youngsters interested is to get them on the course and not just have them stay on the driving range. range. In addition to being outdoors and providing opportunities for exercise, golf is a game the entire family can enjoy together. The time to get the game of golf involved in your child’s future is now.

Lead with your Racquet for Perfect Volleys

By Matt Brown, Tennis Professional

Oftentimes when at the net, we tend to wait for the ball and let it

come to us. However, this thinking will sometimes lead to an open pitch of the racquet face, resulting in a volley that sails long! Use a more proactive step in completing a successful volley attempt: Lead with the racquet and hands out front. Going to the ball, meeting the ball out front and leading with your racquet will ensure that you are forward thinking and the ball won’t arrive as a surprise. Keeping the racquet out in front of the body is key for great volleys.

Patience! Patience! Patience! By Andra Cornea, Tennis Professional

Hitting that winning shot down the line does look and feel good, but at the end of the day the person who hits more balls in the court will win, no matter how pretty or ugly it might be. Challenge yourself to hit 3-5 balls over the net before doing anything crazy or going for the outright winner! Make sure to select your shots, recognize your opponent’s positioning, and if possible, go for the winner!

5 Tennis

THE GREAT SPORT OF TENNIS helps benefits both our physical and mental health, and because of this, it still stands as a sport for a lifetime – and here’s why!

❶ Research finds that people who participate in tennis three hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause. ❷ Tennis players also scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem, while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety, and tension than other athletes or non-athletes.

Benefits ofTENNIS

❸ Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and thus promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain.

❹ Studies show that tennis outperforms numerous activities and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics.

❺ Competitive tennis also burns more calories than activities like aerobics or inline skating.

JUNIOR TENNIS

Bring your little ones out to the Sports Club for some Junior Tennis! In this program, your children will learn basic tennis techniques, the rules of the game, the importance of staying active, and sportsmanship, all while growing a love and passion for the game!
