EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Meet MIKE

KIESLING your new Director of Golf

Golf

Mike has 25 years of experience in the Private Club industry. Before joining the Four Seasons team, Mike was the Regional Director of Golf for ClubCorp, overseeing 18 private Club golf operations, in addition to running the day to day operations at Gleneagles Country Club. During his tenure with ClubCorp, Mike developed several nationally adopted Member focused platforms including instructional programs, social golf events, and service standard models. Born and raised in Arlington, Texas, he attended the University of Texas at Arlington. Mike married his highschool sweetheart, Anne Marie and together they have two daughters Katherine (15), and Hayley (12). When not on the golf course, or at a cheer competition for his daughters, Mike likes to spend time at their family ranch outside of Abilene hunting and fishing.

CARE FOR THE COURSE With your Director of Golf, Mike Kiesling

The bunker project is now complete, and are a wonderful improvement to our two incredible golf courses. A big thank you to Anthony Williams and the entire agronomy team for all their hard work managing this project. These new bunkers are fairly forgiving and easy to hit a shot out of. Need help with your bunker game? Your golf professional team is here to help. Now that this project is complete, I would like to mention just a few simple bunker etiquette tips: 1. A golfer should always make it a priority to leave the golf course in the condition that they got to enjoy for their round of golf 2. Always rake after yourself in a bunker 3. Avoid entering and exiting a bunker on the high side 4. When raking try to always push the sand down towards the bottom of the bunker in stead of pulling it up the slope 5. Bunker rake heads should be placed down inside the bunker with the handle resting on the bunkers edge. Always located on the low side of a bunker

Teaching Philosophy

There is not a right way/ wrong way, or one methodology when it comes to reaching your golfing swing goals. Yes, the basic fundamentals (grip, stance, posture) are important, but teaching the golf swing boils down to one simple question - what is the golf ball doing, and what would you prefer to see it do? As an instructor it is my job to identify what a student does in their swing that produces an undesired outcome, and present the faults, and present a solution. Did you know that club face and not club path has As an instructor it is my job to identify what the most significant impact on where the golf ball goes? Once we identify “WHY” we are hitting shots we do not like a student does in their swing that produces to see it is that much easier to work on getting the club face an undesired outcome, and present the to match the club path to produce the desired effect. It is really faults, and present a solution. like dominos - you push over the first one, and the rest all begin to fall in sequential order. —Mike Kiesling 8

Golf

By Tim Cusick, PGA

Director of Golf Instruction

Analyze your game IMPROVING YOUR GOLF GAME, like anything else, takes analysis, knowledge and time. If you miss on the analysis you might be correcting something that just doesn’t make that big of a difference in your game. When analyzing your golf swing, look to four areas: trajectory of the shot, curvature of the ball, contact on the clubface and impact. You’ll probably find a category that’s deficient. This is how you make a correct analysis and where you should look to make any improvements in your swing. The corrections must positively affect this specific area to see improvements in your ballstriking. Follow this process and you will to enjoy the game more.

TIPS FROM THE PROS

Relax the grip! John Mullman

How tightly should you grip the tennis racquet? Here are a couple

of quick hints to help you make your game much more enjoyable. First, grip the racquet lightly, and then right before impact with the ball squeeze a little tighter. Secondly, make sure you’re breathing in between shots which should allow you to have more feel for a relaxed grip. By relaxing and gripping the racquet lightly, you will increase your racquet head speed which promotes better pace.

Good luck on the court and enjoy your new weapon!

Control your first serve‌

and the match! by Jerome Millet

Very few of us have the chance

to bang a 140mph ace at will to save break point the way John Isner or Serena Williams might. Instead, aim to control points by emphasizing a high percentage of first serves. Mix up spin, speed and placement to keep your opponents guessing and stay in control of the majority of the points on your service games.

It is the key to hold serve more frequently and control the match!

By Josh Biard, Athletic Manager

• How much should you increase in weight each week, if you're looking to add muscle? A A consistent training mistake people make is increasing weight too soon, which can result in injury. Always keep in mind, quality over quantity, and never sacrifice technique to add additional weight. That being said, my recommendation is increasing your weight as often as possible while maintaining form and reaching your pre-determined rep range. For example, if your program consists of 3 sets of 12 reps on an exercise and you're only getting 12, 10 and 9 reps, then you're not ready to increase. Once 12 full reps on each set are consistently achieved, it's time to raise the weight. • Will women become bulky if they lift heavy weights? A This is probably the most frustrating myth in all of women's fitness. Ladies, I can assure you that lifting heavy things will make you stronger but will not make you bulky. Think of weight training as a way to develop the shape of the body that you want. “Bulking up” or developing mass is determined much more by your diet than by lifting heavy weights.

Here are answers to some frequently asked fitness questions from our Members >>>

• Does lifting weights burn more calories than cardio? A This is an often asked question and unfortunately, there is not a clear answer as to whether cardio or weight training is the more effective method of shedding calories. Most studies indicate that cardio burns more calories than standard weight training; however studies also show that high intensity weight training out performs cardio in reducing actual body fat. My advice is that if time is an issue and you have to choose what type of workout to get in on your lunch break, always go with high intensity strength training.

Some frequently asked fitness questions from our Members

Fitness

• How should people treat sore muscles Continued after weight lifting? A Muscles go through significant stress when weight training; however the pain should be minimal and is simply a result of muscle adaption. In most cases I suggest working through the soreness; however there are circumstances when the muscles are overworked and treatment is necessary. My rule of thumb is that if you feel pain in the muscle with a light touch, or you find simple daily activities painful, rest, ice, heat, massage and stretching can all be helpful in different stages of recovery. Resume your regular workout schedule once the pain from the soreness is manageable. • How do you know if you're lifting too much/too little? A If you are easily and consistently hitting your goal rep range, it is time to increase the weight. On the flip side, if you are consistently falling short of your rep goal (Example: Goal is 3 sets of 10 and you reach 9, 8, 7 reps), lower the weight until you are able to get each rep on at least the first few sets. Once the goal rep range is met with all sets, it's time to increase the weight again. This is why it's critical to go into a training program with a plan and goals. In addition, logging and tracking your workout will keep you moving in the right direction and help prevent plateaus.
