2017 BOARD of GOVERNORS Sharon Pfaff, Chair Cynthia Villalobos, Vince Menard, Susan Ware, Josh Weiss, Chuck Hosler, Lowelle Childers, Wayne Rose, Bill Good
A NOTE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER Dear Valued Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club Members,
A
s I reflect on 2016, I look back and see so much positive change and progression in the Club since my first impressions last summer, which is largely due to the passion and energy that our membership shows each day for making Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club the best in Texas. Your involvement, support, and enthusiasm are truly the heartbeat of this Club. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the 2016 Board of Governors and Committees for embodying a true ambassador spirit to the Club on the management initiatives, being the voice of the membership to the management team. Our 2017 focus will remain on increasing the value of your membership with every decision that is made throughout the organization. We are excited about several initiatives that are already in progress, and those that we have planned on the horizon. JIM KERN CLUB MANAGER
One significant benefit that has been recently launched is our partnership with Palmer Advantage. This program is now available to all members, and offers golf, travel, and lifestyle benefits that are unparalleled in the marketplace. Another priority for 2017 will be on further enhancing our communication within our Club members. If you haven’t already downloaded our app, please begin to get acquainted with the framework of how it works. You will see additional features rolled out over the next few months that will enhance our ability to customize your membership experience on a more personal level. This includes a more robust member profile that will allow you to communicate what you are seeking from your Club experience, and empower our team to react to your preferences. Ultimately, our communication and technology advancements are centered on creating a family of friends, and allow us to create programming and events that speak directly to your wants and needs. I have truly enjoyed getting to know many of you, and I look forward to continuing to form relationships throughout the upcoming year that will allow us to take the Club experience to unprecedented heights. Your suggestions have been meaningful, and I hope to hear more of them as the year goes on. Feel free to email me at jim.kern@fourseasons.com. Kind regards, Jim Kern Club Manager
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE I’m so thankful 2016 has come to a close...
B
ut it did teach me about what I am truly thankful for: my family and friends, the kindness of others, and the opportunity to work (volunteer) with others on a common goal.
SHARON PFAFF CHAIRMAN BOG
I’m looking forward to working with the 2017 Board of Governors & Committees to continue to enhance the value of our membership. First off, I need to take a line of my report and thank Bill Bailey, Deanna Howard, and Jerry Gatti who all showed sincere passion for making every day we walk in our club a great experience – we’ll miss your smiling faces at the meetings this year. Also, our past committees were successful in increasing the number of events and, as Bob Heard likes to put it, “upping the FUN factor”. I am thankful we will continue working with value-minded management to make our “Four Seasons Golf & Sports Club” the best in the metroplex. 2017 promises to be a year full of health and fun! We already have a bountiful schedule of activities for pretty much every interest – and if something is missing, let’s get in in the works. Check out the calendar and if you haven’t already, be sure to down load the app. If you need anything or have any comments or concerns you can always call or e-mail, me or any members of our committee system – our contact details are in the directory. I am thankful to be serving you all again. Sharon TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com | 3

T
he New Year is all about good luck traditions and foods to eat that ensure this good fortune. Growing up in Hawaii, childhood was a melting pot of these traditions. From the Japanese practice of eating sashimi on Dec. 31, with the fish representing prosperity for the coming year to the Spanish and Greek ritual of consuming 12 grapes at midnight, one to bring luck for each month, there was always something fun to try. All of these were done with a smile and good humored wink to honor the crazy mix of friends, family and cultures that ensued. Now a Texas resident, it’s all about the Black Eyed Peas and Greens. While following these traditions, we often forget their origin. Here’s a little southern culinary history for you to ring the New Year. Back in the days of civil war, Union troops swept through the south, confiscating crops and livestock to use as provisions for their troops. Southerners who weren’t off fighting were left with precious little, save for peas and greens. You see, Union soldiers considered “field peas” and greens to be fit only for animal fodder. These dishes became cherished and appreciated as what saved many a family from starvation during those times and the tradition of celebrating these dishes on the New Year was born. Good fortune and prosperity to all. ~Chef Ke’o TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com | 9

Annually in December, these candidates are elected by the general membership to replace Board members who have completed their two year term. New Board members serve a two-year term and can be elected for additional terms if: a) they are in good standing as defined by Board member approval, b) they run again in the annual Board member election. In addition to the Board members, the Club Manager, the Director of Golf, and the Director of Sports are invited monthly to actively review their areas with the Board. he top 6 players in each gross or net division at the conclusion of the qualifying season on November 1, 2016 received a point value based on their ranking. This was
OUR FOUR SRIXON GOLFERS OF THE YEAR:
calculated from all eligible weighted 2016 scores of this
year long competition. Each competitor also received a point value based on their final round finish position for the 18 hole competition played on November 19th. These two point values were then combined to determine the overall champion. At the start of the day, Steve Nichols lead the gross division but was unable to convert his lead into the title. With the first cold snap of the fall, there was a two horse race with Mike Puls and David Esch, both shooting one over par 72’s. With Mike starting the day ahead of David with 90 points in second place, the tie was enough for him to win the division.
LADIES GROSS – MARGARITA ACOSTA
The men’s net division was led by Mike Huffman, but again the winner came from behind. Doug Tatum shooting net 73 from the third spot and Jerry Gatti a 71 from the fifth spot. With Jerry picking up the day win and 100 points to Dougs 80 points, we had a playoff. Jerry’s unfortunate three putt on the first hole at Cottonwood Valley was enough for Doug to win. Margarita Acosta started at the top of the division ahead of Michele Wallace. With an opening front nine of two over par 38, Margarita built a lead that no one could catch and a runaway victory in the gross
LADIES NET – LYDIA KARNEY
division. The ladies net added some more drama to the day with both Lydia Karney and Margie Hogan coming from behind to tie and force a playoff. After both laying up in front of the water, Lydia had the advantage, receiving an extra shot on the hole. Both made it over the water and with Lydia’s extra shot, she was able to win the division.

OFF THE TEE Off the tee, golfers often miss their shot before they’ve ever hit it. By that, I mean, they don’t utilize the tee box properly. 18 times in a given round of golf you have ‘ball in hand.’ You can tee off anywhere within the confines of the tee markers. I like to follow the motto: TEE OFF ON THE SIDE OF TROUBLE AND THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF WIND. Following this example will give you the widest margin to hit the fairway or green on a par 3. You’re attempting to aim away from trouble as

Marathon and Meatless Mondays
I
t was a chilly morning in March as I briskly walked into Four Seasons. I opened my inbox and there was an article about the new personal trainer--me! As a true narcissist would, I continued to vainly scroll through my endorsement and--there it was: "an accomplished marathoner". Oh no...I had done a number of half marathons up to that point with the other "halfcrazies" but this was a lie--the writer did not know it, but I did. How could I walk around with this "half-truth"? This invisible scarlet letter? I had two choices: accept my new role as a fraud or fulfill my destiny with the other "full-crazies". While the former option was tempting, I knew I must choose the latter. Nine months and many miles later, I officially adopted the "fullcrazy marathoner" title. While it was difficult, especially by mile 23, I am so proud of myself for this achievement! What is your "marathon" this year? That challenge you've been thinking about accepting but have allowed fear to hold you back? As 2016 has shown us all year long, ANYTHING is possible. Make it happen! If that "challenge" for 2017 involves improved nutrition, I have a great place for you to start: Meatless Mondays!
Tools To Keep Your Fitness Goals on Track BY JOSH BIARD, ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE MANAGER
1. Plan Ahead During the winter months as we kick off a new year and schedules are crazy, planning your workout schedule weeks in advance is crucial. Schedule dedicated time to hit the gym rather than leaving your fitness routine up to chance.
2. Track Results You should continually evaluate your progress to determine if your program is taking you closer or further away from your goals. During the holiday season, this is especially crucial.
Every Monday, I challenge my Facebook audience to participate in going meat-free on Mondays. For every participant, I will perform one burpee and post it the following day. Sometimes it's 6, sometimes it's 22 and I almost always have a special guest! I earned my plant-based certification through eCornell and am passionate about this nutrition and the plethora of accompanying benefits. I am certainly not perfect with my nutrition. This change was not overnight but has slowly become a natural part of my life and it has been worth it. Even if you have no desire to become plantbased, Meatless Monday provides a day to try it out and change up your routine. Let me know if you participate and I will perform a burpee for you!
Suzanne Barker Challenging learners towards innovation and impact Email: suzanne.barker@fourseasons.com Connect with me on LinkedIn
Utilize the Bod Pod body compositionmeasuring machine to ensure your goals are being met by your routine.
3. Set a Challenge Create your own challenge, whether it involves trying a new exercise class every day, joining a small group fitness class, or experimenting with an unfamiliar cardio routine. TRX Suspension Training is a great way to safely and effectively use your own body weight as a tool for strength and weight loss goals. You can also join a Surfset class and work on your summer beach body all winter long. The holiday season is a challenging time to stay fit, but by planning ahead and setting goals, you can begin the new year in your best shape yet!
