CHAIR’S CHATTER

Hello Sports Club family! I am so honored to be your Board Chairwoman and I’m looking forward to working with so many talented, dedicated members to make our Club the premier Sports Club of choice. The Board of Governors, Committees and management are already hard at work planning a healthy and fun 2016. While this year will bring many of the great annual events we love attending, there are new things to look forward to this year as well. Keep your eyes on the Club calendar and look out for the renovation updates in your e-mail. Special thanks to Bob Shema for helping us navigate through all of the Club enhancements last year and laying the ground work for many of the changes to come this year. I know he is very excited about the new accounting and website technology rolling out later this year! One of our current board goals is to train and prepare members to completely utilize the features of the new system as it rolls out. Our other board goals include membership integration and recognition, service and product excellence, and philanthropy. We are all excited about this year’s goals. My husband, David, and I have been members for almost 16 years and have thoroughly enjoyed raising our children here. I am looking forward to hanging out on the new Member’s Lounge patio by the fire pits, as well as all the progress of our favorite Club. SHARON PFAFF CHAIRMAN BOG

WHAT DOES YOUR SCALE REALLY KNOW?

Written By: Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Well & Being

T

racking weight

The BOD POD can determine

monitoring your

in both adults and children

loss and

health using

your bathroom scale can be tricky. That’s because the scale tells

you how much your skin, blood,

organs, bones and tissues weigh. It cannot distinguish between

fat and non-fatty tissue. Weight

fluctuates between 1 to 3 pounds

throughout the day due to variety

of reasons. For example, you might retain water due to salt intake or

medication use, which would result in an increase in bodyweight on the scale but has nothing to do

with changes in body fat. And that is what most of us really want to

know, how much of my weight is due to fat?

So if the scale doesn’t accurately reflect body fat, what does? In

1990, the National Institute of

Health provided a grant to develop a method to accurately measure

body composition, and in 1994, the BOD POD was introduced. The

BOD POD uses air displacement technology to assess body

composition, and after scientific testing for accuracy, reliability

and ease-of-use, the BOD POD is considered by researchers to

be the “gold standard” for body composition assessment. 6 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com

the percent fat and fat-free mass by having the individual sit inside the BOD POD for

two 50-second increments

of air measurement. These measurements are then

used to calculate your body composition. It only takes

about 5 minutes to complete

the assessment, which makes it extremely simple and

comfortable. The test results

are instantaneous, and research studies show that the BOD POD is very precise. Other

methods such as skinfold calipers, bioelectric impedance, and

DEXA scans are far less accurate. Knowing your body composition can be a crucial tool in your

pursuit of good health. It can also help design an exercise

program that works for you. I’ve had patients spend 45 minutes running on a treadmill three

times a week and still come in at 26% body fat. When they

switch over to resistance training, they watch their lean muscle

increase and body fat drop. If

you’re interested in upping your

game and fitness level, I strongly

encourage you to make the BOD POD part of your strategy!

An effective short game consists of the ability to play a low, medium and high shot around the green. In order to play each of these shots you must use a different part of the club head to make contact with the ground at impact. On a low shot the front edge of the club makes contact to with the ground at impact. To

create this impact let the club shaft lean forward, in front of the ball, at address with the clubface square. The medium shot should have the club shaft even with the ball at address and again the clubface square. At impact the bottom of the club head makes contact with the ground. The higher shot involves the trailing edge of the club head making contact with the ground at impact. To accomplish this, add some loft to the club head at address, with the club shaft even to the ball. Understanding what part of the club head makes contact with the ground at impact will help in executing each of these shots.

Tim’s Tip 2. Medium shot. Club face is square and the shaft is even with the ball.

Tim’s Tip 3. Low shot. Club face is square and the shaft is ahead of the ball at address.

The week of the AT&T Byron Nelson is busy for the Golf Operations team. How busy? Here are some interesting facts from a golf operations perspective: • Our team walks over 100 miles mowing greens. That is equivalent to mowing from Irving to Waco. • Our mowers travel over 200 miles mowing fairways. • We walk over 110 miles raking bunkers. • We normally start each day at 5am and don’t finish until after 9pm. • Each Golf Operations Manager works more than 100 hours. The AT&T Byron Nelson is hard work but we love it! It gives us the opportunity to show off our wonderful facility on the largest of stages. It’s well worth all the effort! – Dr. Scott Abernathy, Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping Operations

2016 AT&T BYRON NELSON • MAY 16 – 22, 2016 • ATTBYRONNELSON.ORG

The AT&T Byron Nelson is now the ninth longest-running active tournament on the PGA TOUR schedule. This year’s purse is set at $7,300,000 and the 2015 champion, Steven Bowditch returns to TPC Four Seasons to defend his title, along with some of the top golfers in the world.

Be on the lookout for a special edition tournament brochure in April, which includes everything you need to know about the AT&T Byron Nelson and how to navigate the Resort.
