JIM KERN CLUB MANAGER
What better time than summer to get the kids to the golf course or tennis courts to learn the game or improve their skills? These sports create opportunities for juniors to spend time with family and friends, compete, learn etiquette and sportsmanship, and mostly have a good time. We take great pride in helping lead the industry in growing the game of golf or tennis by partnering with organizations such as the PGA of America, the PGA Tour and the USTA. Our world-class sports professionals lead the efforts by offering outstanding junior golf and tennis instruction, hosting weekly summer kids’ camps, and overseeing numerous junior programs. Please consider getting your kids involved in our junior programs this summer. During the summer months, the golf course agronomic team gets really busy. That being said I want to take this opportunity to thank Anthony Williams and our entire grounds crew for the amazing course conditions during the 2017 AT&T Byron Nelson. I also want to thank Paul Earnest for his outstanding leadership of the golf team for the past twenty years. Paul knows how to make a great final impression, not only in the execution of the event, but also in his courageous and inspiring play in the tournament this year. I was honored to be here for our final AT&T Byron Nelson and participate in the many activities that honored the great accomplishments by our team, and the Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club Members, over the past 35 years. I had the opportunity to speak with Peggy Nelson during and after the event, and she assured us that Byron would have been very proud of his final event at Four Seasons. I would also like to thank the Salesmanship Club for their great partnership over the years and wish them all the best in their new location next year. The best thing about being a member at Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club is making friends and memories that last a lifetime. With a full, year-long calendar of dining, entertainment, golf, tennis, social, and family activities, we strive for the Club to be your home away from home. We encourage you to share your Club experience and invite your family and friends to join you at the Club this summer and participate in the many activities we offer. See you at the Club, JIM KERN CLUB MANAGER
Four Seasons Golf & Sports Club Community, If you see Jim Kern around the Club, congratulate him on his first anniversary. We are so fortunate to have him on our management team as our Club Manager. He has driven the vision and mission of our club to be value and Club experience focused. We have discussed the noun “Club” and it’s meaning often. CLUB: a group of persons organized for a particular purpose or activity.
SHARON PFAFF CHAIRMAN BOG
Everything management and your committee system is focused on revolves around the new vision and mission, to create the best Club atmosphere in the metroplex. What’s our particular purpose or activity? You might ask. Well, I believe it is a lot of things, and includes: camaraderie, health, playing/improving our game (whatever game that might be), dining together, etc., to name a few. This past month we were the epitome of Club – people organized to celebrate hosting the Byron Nelson tournament the past 35 years. I am truly proud and honored to be a Member with you all! The way several Members and management staff came together with passion and attention to details to create the best experiences celebrating the Byron Nelson tournament was fulfilling and heartwarming to me. Custom fedoras, 11 fitness classes, a special tennis event, 11 Straight golf tournament, and Farewell Fedora Club social helped the Club kickoff the tournament, which started with cheering on Paul and wrapped up with us watching our last champion, Billy Horschel, being crowned. I will continue to wear my fedora proudly and cherish the memories of the entire week. This golf tournament, while a fun huge party for Irving and the metroplex at large, was created to support our local children and was one of the first charitable tournaments on the PGA Tour. I am so thankful that our Club and Membership helped by attending, donating/sponsoring, and volunteering all these years. A few people who were instrumental in creating the kickoff activities were: Paul Ernest, Jerry Gatti, Meaghan Jordan, Murray Kawchuk, Meredith Lemerand, Kimberly Kimbriel, Brandon Smith, all the board/committee members and the rest of our dedicated staff/management. I wish the Salesmanship Club and the tournament all the best in their new home! Hope your summer is filled with many more Club experiences. We have a great line up of dinners, tournaments, leagues, and other events to celebrate our Membership. See you around the Club, SHARON PFAFF BOARD OF GOVERNORS CHAIR

MEMBER PROFILE
Meet Arthur Considine Fitness Committee Chairman
A
Gym Etiquette Tip #102
rthur serves as the Fitness Committee Chairman and there is a passion for fitness inside him. He is a self-professed "Gym Junkie" working out six days a week whenever possible. Arthur grew up in Boston, the youngest of three and some might say the smallest in size, but not in drive and determination. Working out since he was 10 years old, he took up weight lifting at 13. One of his early mentors was a local fitness guru named Mayo Kahn who trained him every Saturday for several years teaching him form and technique. Arthur's goal was to put on size to play high school football. While smaller in stature, the hard work paid off. He played football in high school and was CoCaptain his Senior year, crediting his training in his ability to hit and take a hit from bigger players and still keep going.
Arthur 71 years young
At 18, in an effort to help support his family, he took a job at American Airlines as a freight/cargo handler. After a few years with American and continuing to work full time, he returned to college, carrying a full load and graduated from Suffolk University in Boston. In 2005 Arthur retired after 41 years with American Airlines as Managing Director/General Manager of Airport Operations and Customer Service SFO, having worked in cities such as Boston, Dallas (twice), Cincinnati, Los Angeles and San Francisco (twice)
Q: What would you say to your fellow members about using the fitness area? A: Expand your comfort zone, especially as you get older. Try a class, try the pool, try some weights. I feel that my dedication to fitness and exercise has kept me healthier and less prone to the aches and pains many people my age feel. Work with a trainer and make sure you learn to do it right. You will gain more from proper form than just jumping in trying to handle heavy weights.
In 1985 on his second assignment in Dallas, Arthur joined the new Las Colinas Sports Club, now The Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club, and found his "club home". In fact the club was one of the deciding factors in where he and Kim decided to move upon his retirement. The Club holds a special place in their hearts, literally, since this is where they met on October 3, 1987. But that wasn't the only reason they wanted to return to Dallas versus his home town of Boston. Kim had a job offer from UT Southwestern and "the Club and our friends at The Club were here." It was a "No Brainer.” Arthur feels driven to give back to the Club for multiple reasons including his love and need to work out and seeing an opportunity to make a better experience for all Members, knowing from the inside out would be the most effective way to affect change. Over the years, Arthur has been a member of more than 12 clubs around the US and has worked out with a few trainers, but says this Club is different. "There is something special about it – the equipment, variety of classes, the Staff and most importantly the people. It's like family."
We asked Arthur a few questions and here is what he had to say: Q: What has kept you exercising all of these years, once your football days were over? A: It truly became a lifestyle, not a means to an end. I found over the years that on the days I worked out, I was much more productive and focused at work.
Q: What is something most people wouldn’t know about you? A: Back in the early 80’s, I held a sort of "unofficial" record at a Northern California lake for the most number of consecutive 360 degree turns on a boogie board behind a speed boat at 52 turns… (we are dizzy just thinking about that.) Q: Do you have any philanthropic organizations that are close to your and Kim’s heart? A: Yes, two come to mind right off. First is the Chris Davidson Opportunity Park at Bush Tennis Center in Midland. It is a park for disabled children and adults being created by fellow Members, Steve and Jan Davidson in memory of their son Chris. Second, is the American Fallen Soldier Project which supports the efforts of a local Carrollton painter named Phil Taylor who through his paintings helps families of servicemen who have been killed in action find closure. We appreciate everything Arthur and his fellow Fitness Committee members do for the Club, so we say Thank YOU! When you see Arthur in the gym, stop and say hello, but only after he’s finished that set he’s doing.
Please Limit The Use of Your Phone in the Fitness Center, on the Track and in Group Class. Constant texting or surfing while on a piece of equipment limits the ability for your fellow member to work-in. Walking and talking on the track is a distraction that causes lane drifting.

Foods that Fight Inflammation
M
any of us can identify with the aches and stiffness that have become such part of our everyday lives. As a Chef of almost 20 years and former athlete, I have pushed hard on my body’s physical limits. The years of long hours on my feet in the kitchen in tandem with my workout mantra “if I can move it we need to add more weight” have started to show up in the form of aches, stiffness and joints that pop a little too much. About 5 years ago I noticed I was waking up very stiff and in a decent amount of pain. Once I got moving everything would dissipate and the aches were quickly forgotten in my usual hectic day. I chalked it up to working out hard and getting older. Who hasn’t been told by the generation ahead “if you think things hurt now wait till you’re my age!” Fast forward a few years with more of the same if not a worse, and a friend of mine recommended Cold Pressed Tart Cherry Juice. Mix it with water and consume a few times a day to reduce inflammation. Not really sure how this would help, I gave it a shot. After a few days of doing this I woke up one morning and went about my day as usual. It was only after a little while I realized my old friends “pain” and “stiffness” had taken a day off and I felt oddly normal. I was shocked that such a small change could make a huge difference. It has started me on a journey to better understand how diet and inflammation can affect our bodies and daily lives. I have worked hard to make changes to what I eat and can tell very quickly when I start to deviate from the things that help keep my old friends on a permanent vacation. I encourage you to

try and incorporate these foods into your diet and find yourself moving a little easier throughout your day. TOP TEN FOODS THAT FIGHT INFLAMMATION; 1. GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES Swiss chard nutrition, for example, is extremely high in vitamin K, which can protect your brain against oxidative stress caused by free radical damage. 2. BOK CHOY Recent studies show that there are over 70 antioxidant phenolic substances in bok choy. 3. CELERY In recent pharmacological studies, benefits of celery include both antioxidant and antiinflammatory abilities that help improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as prevent heart disease. 4. BEETS The umbrella category of antioxidants includes a great deal of substances. In general, they fight to repair the cell damage caused by inflammation. 5. BROCCOLI Broccoli is high in both potassium and magnesium, and its antioxidants are particularly potent anti-inflammatory substances. 6. BLUEBERRIES One antioxidant in particular stands out as an especially strong anti-inflammatory, and that’s quercetin. Found in citrus, olive oil and dark-colored berries, quercetin is a flavonoid (a beneficial substance or phytonutrient that’s prevalent in fresh foods) that fights inflammation and even cancer.
7. PINEAPPLE Usually, when it’s packaged in supplement form, quercetin is often paired with bromelain, a digestive enzyme that’s one of the benefits of pineapple 8. SALMON Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. 9. BONE BROTH Bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others. They contain chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine, the compounds sold as pricey supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain. 10. WALNUTS When following a diet without a lot of meats, nuts and seeds can make up the difference for protein and omega-3s. Add omega-3-rich walnuts to green leafy salads drizzled with olive oil for a satisfying antiinflammatory meal, or grab a handful for an on-the-go snack.

BALL POSITION
TIM’s TIP
Ball position is a very important component in the golf swing. Correct ball position can make
the difference between a solidly struck shot and a total miss hit. To me, golfers move the ball around in their stance too much. As a general rule, iron shots should be played off your nose and any club with a head cover should be positioned opposite your left eye for a right handed golfer. Use this positioning

ow, with summer time here, we have a great opportunity to enjoy playing golf late into the evenings. Playing during this time allows for less pressure, more fun and lasting memories for your family. Playing golf does not always mean having
to play 9 or 18 holes; playing three holes is a great place to start and then you can work your way up from there. When playing with your kids, it is important to remember to compliment them on their shot with "Great Shot" or "Good Swing". Positive reinforcement goes a long way when on the golf course.
