A NOTE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Sports Club Members,
DIRK BURGHARTZ GENERAL MANAGER
We are excited to announce the appointment of Jim Kern as the new Club Manager of The Sports Club. Jim joins us with extensive Club and Golf experience having been with The Walt Disney Company for 23 years in a variety of roles, including serving as the PGA General Manager for Disney’s 99 holes of golf before becoming their Director of Corporate Alliances. He was most recently the Corporate Director of Business Development for Arnold Palmer Golf Management in Dallas, where he was responsible for the strategic growth of the company’s current portfolio of 161 golf properties. Jim, his wife Patty, son James, daughter Kaitlyn, and their dog Mickey moved from Orlando to Dallas three years ago. They are all avid golfers, enjoy traveling and outdoor activities. Jim and his wife Patty serve on their kid’s high school booster club Board of Directors. Among Jim’s other “trades,” he is also an accomplished off-shore angler who has competed in national tournaments and a certified Open Water Scuba Diver for more than 30 years. Last, but certainly not least, Jim is a PGA Class A member, a big supporter of The First Tee and founded the Future Leaders Forum that honors the best participant of each chapter with a week-long “back stage” experience at Walt Disney World. Jim is also very active with the Folds of Honor Foundation in providing college scholarships for children of wounded warriors. Please join me in welcoming Jim, Patty, James, Kaitlyn and Mickey to our Sports Club Four Seasons Resort family.

Best wishes, Dirk

HOW FIRM SHOULD YOU HOLD ON TO A GOLF CLUB? TIM’s TIP
I’m often asked how firm should you hold on
Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction tim.cusick@fourseasons.com Twitter @timcusickgolf www.timcusickgolf.com
to a golf club… That’s a great question, as it’s difficult to gauge golfer’s grip pressure. I like to compare grip pressure to a hand shake. Too firm with the grip pressure makes it difficult to release the club. Hold on too loose and you could release the club too soon. Make sure to
engage all ten fingers and your palms to the grip pressure you engage with the club. Finally, both hands hold on with the same pressure. This way they can work in unison as the club swings.

Junior-Junior Results
We had a great day on March 20th on Cottonwood Valley! In years past, the kickoff scramble has been a Juniors only event. This year, we made it a family affair and welcomed friends and family to play along. Kids could create their own teams or sign up individually and be placed on a team. 40 players participated, we had bag toss and washers set up for the players to enjoy in Byron’s after play. Team Dylan Knox, Jennifer Knox, Frank Waterhouse and Collin Waterhouse walked away with the hardware this year with a score of 30! They beat Chip and Hayden Zahn and Alan and Lainey Marcuis in a scorecard playoff. Thank you to all that participated! It was a great day!
We hosted our annual Junior-Junior tournament on TPC on April 10th. The wind was blowing strong that afternoon but the kids battled through it and had a great time! We had 23 players participate and they played 2-man Best Ball in both the 18 and 9 hole division. Congratulations to Andrew Chow and Henry Kirkpatrick for winning the 18 hole division with an 80 and to Kate Osborn and Cade Charles for winning the 9 hole division with a 44!

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE FROM DR. SCOTT ABERNATHY:
“Verti-what?”
G
olf courses are in a constant state of change. This is especially true at this property given
the dynamic nature of our soils. To protect longterm playing conditions on short-cut bermudagrass areas, vertical mowing is a necessary practice. Vertical mowing uses vertical blades spaced approximately 1” apart to slice the turf. The slicing action removes thatch and improves growth habit. Verticut areas typically require approximately two weeks healing. This is necessary short-term pain for significant long-term gain. Watch the Tee Times for specific information on when this practice will

be done. It will be a primary focus this summer. If you have any questions about this or any other course related topic, please contact a Golf Operations representative. Enjoy the courses!

H Y D R AT I O N ; YES, IT MATTERS
H
ydration is the key to greater enjoyment of outdoor activities. Yes, it is that important. During the summer months, consuming water should be a
conscious thought, if not a scheduled event. Water intake is much different than just fluid consumption. Please remember that coffee, sports drinks and energy drinks can have an adverse effect on your level of hydration and should not be a substitute for H2O, especially at this time of year.
Proper hydration leads to better performance, cell health, and elevated metabolism. It will help your endurance and enjoyment of outdoor activities. So, have a great summer season and don’t forget the water!

his year we are offering four Swing, Serve and Splash Camps plus six weeks of Tennis or Golf Camps. Coach Yevgen Bondarchuk and Coach Grady Randle will again lead the camps on a
