THE SPORTS CLUB FOUR SEASONS RESORT
CHAIR’S CHATTER
I
can’t believe it’s been two years already and my time as Chairman of The Board of Governors is up. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was awesome to witness the passion and commitment of our board and committee members and see how hard everyone worked to make every event and experience at the Club the best it could possibly be. Kudos to you all! Throughout this time, I also had the pleasure of working closely with the Club management and staff, from Dirk our General Manager through Rob and his talented staff that is responsible for overseeing the operations of the whole Resort and Club. They all offered an open ear and were willing to meet with any members of the board to discuss any issue or concern that we had. It’s been a real pleasure to get a peek behind the curtain and see what it takes to run a Club of this magnitude and develop a close relationship with the team! I’d like to mention a couple of the accomplishments that we have achieved during the past two years. The first being that we will finally be implementing online bill review in the first part of 2016. This was a particular goal of mine so it’s great to hear that it is actually in development along with some other cool technology upgrades. We also created a “Golf 2020 Vision” sub-committee of the Board, which included some (non-board) avid golf members to help guide us through what happens after the Byron Nelson Tournament departs. This group will help ensure that the golf courses and golfers experience maintains its championship level. Golf members will also be happy to finally have a much-anticipated Golfers Lounge, which is happening as part of the Members Lounge renovation project. In addition, working together with members and frequent users of the Club Lounge, we created a special task force to meet regularly with the restaurant managers and staff to help ensure that improvements are made in all levels of service and offerings as the lounge renovation comes to fruition. All this, plus major renovations to the fitness area have made this a unique time to have been sitting as Chairman. I will surely miss my active roll on the board but look forward to continue to help out wherever I can. As I have heard often said from many members, many times...... “I Love Our Club!!!” Please join me in welcoming Sharon Pfaff as the incoming chairperson! I’m sure many of you know Sharon and her husband, David and their lovely children. They are very active members of the Club and can be seen participating in everything from golf to tennis and fitness as well as attending many social events. Sharon is very excited to be the incoming Chair and I know she will do a fabulous job. Congratulations Sharon! Sincerely,
BOB SHEMA CHAIRMAN BOG

he holidays bring a unique challenge to staying fit. Delicious goodies and parties are in abundance, we are outside less, and our vitamin D access is

1) INCORPORATE STRENGTH TRAINING – Building muscle in the gym once or twice a week does more than just make you look and feel good, it also helps boost metabolism. Every time muscle is broken down during a workout, the body has to repair it, burning extra calories to do so. 2) PERFORM CARDIO WITH A PURPOSE – Know what your goals are for doing a cardio workout. If your goal is to simply burn body fat, then you should keep your heart rate in the “fat burning mode”. Your max heart rate is estimated at 220 minus your age. The “fat burning zone” is estimated
at 60-70% of your max heart rate. Keeping your heart rate in the zone of 60-70% of your max rate will help ensure you are using stored fat as energy versus muscle or stored sugar. 3) GET OUTSIDE ON THE NICE DAYS – Utilizing the outdoor track and tennis courts to do cardio on sunny days will help maintain your vitamin D levels and greatly help your metabolism. The holidays are challenging for physical health, but by getting in the gym now, you can be happier and more successful heading toward your spring goals.

STRESS LESS, HERE’S HOW
IT’S TIME TO ADDRESS YOUR STRESS
I
f you’re feeling totally stressed out, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. The days when you feel so overwhelmed that even basic tasks seem impossible. This is a completely natural human response to stress, however, that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can do about it. Though dealing with stress is part of life, there are various therapies that can enhance your body’s ability to deal with stress, so that you are feeling more relaxed, less anxious, depressed or experiencing less pain. Each body is unique and each mind is distinct. But no matter who you are, one therapy that can be very effective is: massage.
and anxiety, and reduce pain by increasing the body’s production of serotonin.
Therapeutic massage is one of the oldest healing arts and has been used to treat stress and muscle tension for thousands of years. Massage therapy can relieve stress quickly and depending on where one holds their stress, there are techniques and pressure points that can directly address the body’s problem area.
• Scalp massage is incredibly relaxing and can also help relieve headaches, as the therapist works the scalp and the base of the skull, where many people hold tension. Increased circulation may even be good for hair growth!
It is unfortunate that massage continues to be regarded as simply a recreational pleasure. Many people are unaware of the healing properties of massage and how it can positively affect health. • A study at Cedars-Sinai found that after just one session of deep tissue, Swedish, or light touch massage; all the participants experienced a significant reduction in the stress hormone cortisol and an increase in infection fighting white blood cells. • Studies have also shown that massage can improve mood, ease the feelings of depression 8 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT MASSAGE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? • Swedish massage is what most people are familiar with: long, soothing strokes that relax, ease tension and enhance circulation. • Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage but more pressure is applied to allow deeper penetration into the muscles. Great for those who hold more tension in their shoulders or back.
• Craniosacral Therapy focuses light pressure on the bones of the face, neck and spine to relieve compression and ease tension. Deeply relaxing, it can also help with headaches and chronic muscle tension. • Acupressure uses pressure points to alleviate stress, increase circulation, and according to Traditional Chinese medicine, it also enhances movement of chi, or energy, in the body. Tieraona Low Dog, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Well & Being. Well & Being expert massage therapists understand the body and can relieve stress with any of these three ancient therapeutic arts. Live it Well.

1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup shredded coconut 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup cornstarch Milk Chocolate Directions Add coconut milk, sugar and salt to a saucepan and stir over medium heat until the sugar and salt dissolves. Reduce heat to medium low, add shredded coconut and cook for 5 minutes to soften. Make a slurry in a separate small bowl by gradually whisking 1/4 cup water into the cornstarch. Whisk slurry into the coconut mixture and allow to reduce and thicken until it is the consistency of yogurt. Transfer to serving dishes, melt the milk chocolate in a double boiler or short bursts in the microwave, drizzle melted chocolate over haupia, swirl in with a toothpick and chill.

purpose to their practice. Here are my three keys to a successful practice session.
1.
PACE YOURSELF – If you’re going to
practice for an hour, make it 3 fifteen minute sessions with a couple beaks.
2.
GIVE YOURSELF A GOOD LIE –
I know the lie isn’t always perfect on the course but at the moment you’re not on the course. You’re trying to improve, so give yourself the best chance with a good lie.
3.
BUILD CONFIDENCE WITH YOUR
FAVORITE CLUBS – Start your practice session with your favorite club. Get a groove going and some confidence then move to the clubs you have a more difficult time hitting.

NELSON CUP RECAP
2015 Nelson Cup HORSERACE This competition will go down in the history books! Players were provided hickory shafted clubs and a persimmon driver along with modern Srixon soft-feel golf balls to use in this year’s Horserace on Wednesday afternoon. Surprisingly, the hickory clubs performed better than expected. Kevin demonstrated the club expectation to the groups on hole #2 providing an idea of how the clubs would perform. Overall, about 95% of the players enjoyed the opportunity to use the vintage clubs. SPECIAL $5K PUTT A big thanks to Legacy Exploration for sponsoring a $5,000 Putt this year, which was a nice reward opportunity for the Flight Runners Up. The 12 players attempted a 50-foot putt and one-time shot on the CWV putting green on Saturday afternoon. Without any hesitation, Preston Phillips stepped up and made the remarkable shot! Congratulations Preston, well done! CHAMPION SHOOTOUT All of the flight winners started on hole #2 with two teams being eliminated each time. Handicaps under 5 played from the black tees, 6-14 played from the blue tees and then higher handicaps played from the white tees. Each time we moved the flag position for a new look. The final pair to shoot out was Marcus Conroy and Zamil Hudani. Zamil’s guest hit first from the black tees and pulled it long into the left trap where the ball plugged, leaving an impossible shot. Marcus’s guest hit a great shot from the blue tees over the flag, leaving a 15 foot putt and applying a killer blow! Zamir hit a great shot landing on the edge of the green, however it ran into the front bunker. His partner Les then left it in the sand and Zamil did the same! The match anti-climatically ended with Marcus taking the win. TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Flight 1 - Zamil Hudani & Les Logsdon Flight 2 - Whit Fadal & Benton Brown Flight 3 - Joe Cleary & Tom Kidd Flight 4 - Nelson Cup Champions, Marcus Conroy & Mark Williams Flight 5 - Peter Schulz & Rob McDaniel Flight 6 - David Moore & Bill Hailey

SPORTS CLUB IS PRIMED FOR ITS BEST YEAR YET!
A
s we approach the holidays and a new year I am drawn to reflect on how far our athletic division has come over the past several months. We have undergone an expansive renovation, a management re-structure, epic rains leading to significant repair projects, collectively causing our team and our members to nimbly navigate our way around ever changing facilities and programs. Therefore, it is appropriate for me to thank our staff for their incredible efforts in managing so positively through the daily challenges, and to our members for working with us to reach the finish line of our new and vastly improved Club.

“THESE BUNKERS ARE AWESOME”
M
ay’s flooding wreaked havoc on both golf courses. As a result, insurance approved a multi-phase restoration project highlighted by a complete bunker renovation. This project will be completed this winter. All sand and lines are being removed. The bunker’s internal drainage is being tested and replaced when necessary. New bunker liner is being installed followed by the addition of a
new 50/50 blend of Sure Play and Bunker White sands. This new blend should be an improvement over our previous bunker sand. The sand particles are more angular which produces firmer, more compact conditions. Firm sand reduces plugged or “fried egg” lies and allows for more consistent shotmaking. Overall, you can expect a better playing experience regardless of your abilities.
