I
F O U R S E A S O N S G O L F & S P O R T S C L U B C O M M U N I T Y, hope everyone has been enjoying the summer and taking advantage of all the Club has to offer. Since the last publication, the Board has scheduled two State of the Club Addresses designed to discuss the current status of the Club, management
plans for member value and take any questions you may have regarding the direction of the Club. These events have been very well received and extremely informative. Our goal is for these addresses to become regular events over the years. A more informed membership makes for a more involved membership. The Club calendar is scheduled with some wonderful events over the next few months, including summer camps for the kids, Tennis Club Championships, the Nelson Cup Golf Club Championship, Havana Nights and Halloween. This year, we will be making some big changes to our Cool October events, so keep an eye out for more details to come later this fall. See you at the Club, Joshua Weiss Board of Governors Chair

S
Dear Members, UMMER IS AN EXCITING TIME AT YOUR CLUB. The pool facilities are open, many member tournaments
fire up on the courses and courts, and our busy Club activities schedule begins to blossom. Please review the Weekly Watch emails and make sure you have the Four Seasons Members App downloaded as the best way to stay informed and sign up for all the exciting activities your Club has to offer!
What better time than summer to get the kids to the golf course to learn the game or improve their skills? Golf creates opportunities for juniors to spend time with family and friends, compete, learn etiquette and sportsmanship, and most importantly, have a good time. We take great pride in helping lead the industry in growing the game of golf by partnering with organizations such as the PGA of America and the PGA Tour. Our world-class PGA golf professionals lead the efforts by offering outstanding junior golf instruction, hosting weekly summer camps, and overseeing numerous junior golf programs. Please consider getting your kids involved in our junior golf programs this summer. During the summer, the golf course agronomic team gets really busy. That being said, I want to take this opportunity to thank Anthony Williams, Director of Agronomy, and our entire grounds crew for the amazing course conditions during these challenging summer months. I would also like to welcome our newest staff members to the Club! We have many new faces for you to meet, including: Michaelyn Bradford, Head Golf Professional for TPC; Tristan Thomas, Assistant Professional for TPC; Julian McClaine, Tennis Professional; and Rebecca Muniz, Membership Services Lead Supervisor. We are also happy to announce the promotion of Nick Holditch to Assistant Professional for Cottonwood Valley. The best thing about being a member at Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club is making friends and memories that last a lifetime. With a full, year-long calendar of dining, entertainment, golf, social, and family activities, we strive for the Club to be your home away from home. We encourage you to share your Club experience and invite your family and friends to join you at the Club this summer and fall to participate in the many activities we offer. See you at the Club, Jim Kern, PGA General Manager

Golf Tip
Positioning
the golf ball By Tim Cusick, PGA
Director of Golf Instruction
Positioning the golf ball correctly in your stance is essential for solid contact.
T
HROUGHOUT YOUR BAG, THE BALL POSITION MOVES ABOUT TWO INCHES. Not much for 13 clubs. In general terms, I like to have my students play the ball opposite the nose for iron shots. Any club that has a headcover should be placed opposite the eye for a right-handed golfer.
This positioning allows for a slight downward strike with the irons and a more level strike with the hybrids and woods. Follow this pattern for a more consistent impact. 8

JUNIOR TENNIS TIPS FROM THE PROS
The ball toss on the serve
Relax the grip!
By Julian McClaine, Tennis Professional
By John Mullman, Tennis Professional
A consistent ball toss will improve the most important stroke in the game – the serve. High enough to promote a fully extended arm at contact and in front of you for maximum power are the key elements to a good ball toss.
How tight should you grip the tennis racquet? Here are a couple of quick hints to help you make your game much more enjoyable. FIRST, grip the racquet lightly, then squeeze a little tighter right before impact with the ball. SECONDLY, make sure you’re breathing in between shots, which should allow you to have more feel for a relaxed grip. By relaxing and gripping the racquet lightly, you will increase your racquet head speed which promotes better pace. Good luck on the court and enjoy your new weapon!

Congratulations to Bob Barrie Hard Court 65+ U.S. National Tennis Champion
O
N JUNE 17, Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club Member Bob Barrie became the U.S. National Tennis
Champion for the 65-and-over hard court division. The tournament was held in Irvine, California and is one of the four national championships of the year. The other three are held on clay, grass and indoors. The tournament included all the top U.S. players and #9-seeded Bob had a very tough draw, compiling wins over the #2, #3 and #5 players in the country on his way to victory in the 64-man draw. Bob and his wife Martha joined the club two and a half years ago because of the quality of players assembled at the Club. He and Martha are on the Tennis Committee and particularly enjoy attending tennis and social events for all of the fun and camaraderie. “I would like to thank all of my regular practicing partners, particularly Vinnie Menard, Tom Morley, Flip Howard, Mike Grantham, Jimmy Walker, Curtis Powell, Austin McDaniel, and Mark Bruno,” said Bob. “I would also like to thank the tennis staff at Four Seasons for facilitating practices and coordinating court times and practices, with a special shout-out to Tennis Professional Yevgen Bondarchuk for organizing and running top-quality practices.” Bob’s dream is to see the addition of clay courts at Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club.

Fitness JOSH BIARD’S favorite ways to burn
calories 300 in minutes 30(or less)
INTERVAL TRAINING: HIIT (high intensity interval training) is my top choice if you want to burn 300 calories fast. HIIT training consists of alternating short periods of intense physical activity with short periods of rest. My favorite interval session involves mixing in the Skill Mill with high intensity strength training: 30 seconds going all out on the Skill Mill followed immediately by 24 reps of push-up to rows, then straight to 12 dumbbell squats. Rest for two minutes and repeat. JACOBS LADDER: If you're tired of traditional workouts and searching for something different and challenging, the Jacobs Ladder might be just what you’re looking for. In addition to strengthening and toning muscles, a Jacobs Ladder session will boost your heart rate, build stamina and increase flexibility.
Introducing Massage Therapist Eliana Ramirez About Me As an Industrial Engineer and graduate of Northeastern University, I’ve spent most of my career in the aerospace and power generation business. However, the more I progressed through my engineering career, the more I realized that my passion was not in numbers, but rather in healing and helping people feel better. Therefore, I decided to embark on my journey into Massage Therapy. Very early on that journey, I realized massage therapy is my passion and what I love doing. I’ve enjoyed every bit of my massage therapy career over the last few years and specialize in multiple modalities such as sports, trigger points, neuromuscular release, stretching, hydrotherapy and therapeutic massage. I am very excited to be part of the Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club Team! In my free time, I love to travel, dance and play volleyball. This past November, I married my husband, Asun, with whom I am raising 3 beautiful cats (Onyx, Moxie and Butler).
Fitness Member Profile
Meet Brandon Hensley Brandon Hensley is founder and CEO of Hensley Commercial Properties which owns Tangerine Salons, Collective Office Shared Workspaces and HelloBooth. com, a social media solution for businesses. A Fitness member of Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club since 2003, we spoke with Brandon about some of his fitness habits and routines.
Reason for exercising I had lapsed in my diet and exercise for a few years and had gained too many unwanted pounds. I decided in December 2017 that I would get “fit by 50,” as my 50th birthday was coming up in June of this year. Our friend Meg Plotsky introduced me to Matt Greenemeier and I started personal training 16
twice a week with him. At 6’2” 224 pounds, my goal weight was 205. I thought 20 pounds would be about the amount I need to lose. Not only did Matt help me with the physical part, but with the nutritional part as well. He advised me on what to eat, and just as importantly, what not to eat. I went on a low carb, low sugar, no bread diet and the pounds started coming off. By April, I had to buy a completely new wardrobe as I went from large and XL shirts to medium, while losing 4” off my waist. My goal of 205 pounds was shattered and I now weigh 181 pounds. I can’t believe I had 40 pounds to lose! I now train 4-5 days a week, spending 30-45 minutes on cardio and 30-45 minutes on resistance and weight training. I’ve left bread and sugar behind and S U M M E R / F A L L 2 0 18

eat a Paleo diet, which I adapted to much easier than I thought I could. Favorite routine I love the elliptical for cardio and mix in machines and free weights for my resistance training. I keep an iPad Mini in my locker, so any of the elliptical machines turn into my own private Netflix theatre for the time I am on them. Tip for others Get a trainer and listen. Having a trainer will make the gym an “appointment,” which you will be more likely to adhere to. When you are beginning, you will find excuses not to go, but when you have someone counting on you to be there, it changes that thought process. Once you get into it and the gym becomes a habit, you will look forward to spending time at our beautiful facility.

Melissa first became interested in acupuncture after receiving treatment for a sports injury in Japan. After finding pain relief and accelerated recovery, she set out to study acupuncture at Morinomiya College of Medical Arts and Science in Osaka, Japan. Upon receiving her national license in Japan, she worked in the school’s clinic and acupuncture research department for a year before returning to the United States. In 2017, Melissa completed her master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and received her license from the Texas Medical Board. Blending her experience and knowledge from Japan with modern techniques, Melissa is trained CLUB MEMBER TESTIMONIAL to administer a broad spectrum Mark Zimmerman remembers a of treatment modalities, including former colleague recommended he try needles, electrostimulation, cupping, acupuncture, so when he saw it offered tuina massage, moxibustion and at the Club he had to try it. Tribute to Nick’s 35 Years By Robin Scott, Athletic Director When I arrived at The Sports Club in 1992, I quickly realized that Nick Thurman was already a pillar of the service culture that Four Seasons was known for and that I should pay attention and learn from him. Nick was simply the most universally liked professional that I had encountered in my brief career in the club and hospitality industry. Over the past 25+ years nothing has changed with that early assessment Nick Thurman is an absolute icon. As the consummate "leader by example," countless employees have learned from simply watching Nick, as he engages with our members and guests in such a genuine and positive manner, and delivers highly personalized service to everyone he encounters. Beyond his status as a service leader, Nick has always been one to "walk the walk" as an inspiration to us all to take care of our own well-being with regular physical activity. He sets the tone for all of us to make our own health and wellness a priority in our daily lives. Equally impressive has been Nick's effort to diversify his skill set. Not satisfied by being one of the most heralded squash and racquetball professionals in the industry, Nick has become a highly regarded personal trainer and group cycle instructor. Earlier this year we celebrated Nick's 35 years at Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club. We have been absolutely blessed and inspired by his presence and influence all these years. Thank you, Nick! We look forward to many more years!
According to Melissa, “Eastern medicine incorporates much more than just needles. Depending on a patient’s condition and constitution, we may not use needles at all! Children are a great example; in their case, we use moxa (a heat therapy) applied to specific acupuncture points to stimulate healing. In some cases, like sports injuries or skeletal muscular injuries, we may use needles and finish up with an herbal oil to help stimulate circulation and expedite recovery. Each case and patient are unique and I will always discuss the best course of action.
For Mark, acupuncture gives significant pain relief, which has led to increased joint mobility and flexibility. This has allowed him to maintain a more active lifestyle than before. "My shoulder feels better than it ever has," says Mark. According to Mark, Melissa is "very knowledgeable, certainly knows the human anatomy, and how to fix it. She is a very impressive professional and the fact that she earned her doctorate in acupuncture in Japan greatly adds to her credibility." He also likes that Melissa incorporates massage and oils into the treatments to stimulate circulation and healing. Mark would definitely recommend acupuncture with Melissa to any Club Member and says, “You don’t know until you try it!”
“We don't just treat pain. It is often thought that acupuncture is used for pain, and although it is quite effective for pain, we also treat conditions of internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics and even psychology.
“It is important to have realistic expectations when it comes to acupuncture and eastern medicine. Often times it can dramatically reduce pain, but it may take a series of sessions to resolve an injury. This is especially true of conditions like stress or allergies where we leave the treatment room and again are confronted with the stimulus that led us to seek treatment in the first place. The benefit of acupuncture and eastern medicine is there are few risks and no real side effects, so the worse-case scenario is it doesn't work. With that in mind, I'll echo the words of Mr. Zimmerman and say it’s worth a try!” To schedule an appointment, please contact Melissa at 469-995-0465.
