2013 BOARD of GOVERNORS Frank Broyles, Chair Ron Howard, Lydia Karney, John Mason, Alex Pier, Sharon Pfaff, Bob Shema, Kate Shema, Bill Bailey
Chair’s Chatter Many of you probably wonder what the Board of Governors does to make your Club better and your membership experience more enjoyable. After two years on the Board my answer is, “quite a bit.” Each monthly Board meeting is attended by your elected Club members and management representation from the fitness, tennis and golf departments. The meetings are a time to get together and discuss issues such as Club improvements, events or ways to maximize your experience. In fact, the Board of Governor’s true focus is around four main goals: enhancing Club communication, increasing participation, maximizing the Club experience and Cool October. All of these goals are focused around Club membership and your overall satisfaction while at The Sports Club. This is why the member survey is such a vital communication tool. It is
the best way to alert Club management about specific topics that require more attention. For example, one problem area we consistently notice in the survey is Club etiquette. Each of us can make the Club experience more enjoyable for others by following rules such as proper cell phone etiquette in the Members Lounge, keeping our locker and shower areas clean, picking up towels and respecting other members and their guests. The Nike slogan “just do it” probably applies here. How do we “just do it?” Awareness and common sense is the answer. Take advantage of the many ways to communicate with the Board of Governors and Club Management. Let us know what we can do to help YOU! Tell us about your ideas or issues. Participate in member surveys, talk to your Board reps, or email me at sportsclubbog@gmail.com. We are lucky to have intelligent and creative members who are bursting with great ideas. We not only welcome your input, we desire it. And for sure, think courtesy, awareness and have a great 2013. Frank Broyles Chairman, Board of Governors

From the Club Manager Rob Cowan We are very excited to welcome Mylan World Team Tennis (WTT) to Irving, Texas, and Four Season Resort and Club! If you are unfamiliar with this organization and format, it is unlike anything we have hosted before. Our Club and the Championship tennis court will be the host site for one of the eight teams from around the country. Each team plays 14 matches of an innovative coed team format over a three-week season in July, of which seven will be home matches. It all culminates in a season ending playoff, hopefully with our home town team! Many of you are aware that our very own, Brent Haygarth and Mark Knowles, formerly played WTT and Brent has been a coach for several years since hanging up his “professional tennis” sneakers. Additionally, Craig Kardon has been featured as a WTT television commenter for several years. WTT, co-founded by legend Billie Jean King in the 1970s, attracts some of the best players in the world and offers unique access to the sport and some of its greatest champions who have played over the past 38 seasons. Spectators will revel in all the aspects this great organization brings to our city - from multi-colored courts to evening matches with music, from the multitude of play formats to the unique experience for locals - it’s tennis at its finest. Think “Friday Night Lights” for tennis lovers. There should be a lot of excitement surrounding the courts during that three week stretch in July and I hope you plan to be around to support our team this summer!

Letter From Paul Director of Golf
W
ith the arrival of spring, we are excited to have another beautiful golf season in bloom. Last year, we had more member related rounds of golf than we have had in over a decade. While we did experience terrific seasonal weather throughout the year, I hope that the results also reflect our memberships desire to play a bit more golf too. I have three special announcements to relay to you. First, as part of our Resort and Club’s new agreement with Titleist this year, we are rolling out new range balls for practice use on the Driving Range. NXT Tour “Practice” balls will be utilized for daily warm-up and in the short game areas. While these balls are not striped, we ask that they remain on the practice grounds only and are not taken to the golf course. Second, after more than a decade since the last one, we are excited to ‘extend the hours’ with an evening golf event on Friday, March 8. We hope to see a big crowd and can make this an annual affair. Third, on Saturday, March 9, we are hosting the largest demo day on record down at the Golf School. Come try the latest and greatest from eight of the top manufacturers in the country and get some new equipment to start the season. In summary, we hope to see you playing more golf than ever and know that we are committed to continuing to provide you a great facility in which to do so.
Backswing: For wind shots focus on no more than a 3/4 backswing.
Follow-through: The abbreviated follow-through helps lower the flight of the shot.
Tim’s Tips
Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction
T
he spring time in North Texas is a great time to play golf. The dormant fairways and rough greens are back up, the leaves return and the flowers bloom again. Another characteristic of the spring is the wind. It brings the warmer air in but it also makes controlling the golf ball more difficult. When hitting into the wind count on one more club for about every 10 mph of wind. When hitting into the wind, you want to lower the flight of the golf ball. Take more club, shorten both the backswing and follow through. Focus on making solid contact, rather than trying to hit the ball through the wind. These two tips will offer more control over the ball and will allow you to still shoot good scores.

Equipment Update
A
Scott Abernathy Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping
s you are likely aware, capital spending has been challenging in recent years, however, I am pleased to summarize the positive steps that have taken place over the past nine months. First, we targeted and hired the best Equipment Manager in the business. Stephen Tucker joined our team in June and has proven to be a visionary leader that has helped identify and organize our priorities in this area. Second, we secured much needed new equipment including four new fairway mowers, two new tee and approach mowers, two new portable green’s fans, and six new transportation vehicles. This equipment has already had an impact on quality and efficiency. I am also excited to announce that we have solved the primary equipment challenge we had in 2012: rough mowers. Three mowers are scheduled to be delivered prior to the 2013 growing season which will position us to mow the rough lower and more often. Third, we purchased a new equipment storage building for the Maintenance Facility. This building will better protect our fleet from the tough Texas weather. Finally, we were granted operational funds to refurbish select pieces of our existing fleet in order to improve their performance and useful life. Life was good in 2012! While this may not sound like sexy chatter, we are confident that the results of these efforts will be better golf playing conditions throughout 2013!

pringtime is such a refreshing and energizing time at The Sports Club, and this year is no exception. It is especially exciting to be welcoming the Dallas Tennis Classic back to our tennis courts March 11 - 17. This men’s ATP Tour event provides an amazing opportunity for Club members to see world-class professional tennis in a wonderfully intimate setting right here at our outdoor tennis facility.
Sports Talk Robin Scott Director of sports
Experiencing live professional tennis is often a great inspiration for kids, and our junior tennis program is a superb place for your kids to begin their tennis journey. Under new leadership, the program has an increased emphasis on a fun and energetic learning environment, using the USTA “Quick Start” equipment and development strategies. A new structure is also in place to ensure kids progress through class levels in a fair and equitable manner. Pricing has been adjusted to make attending multiple classes more attractive to our Sports Club families as well! As we “spring” into summer, don’t forget to reserve space in our very popular Summerfest Camps!

ell-placed lobs are a great offensive weapon for smart players, especially in doubles. If you want to improve your lob shot returns, you need to practice returning balls out of the air. Instead of letting the ball bounce and back up, “Air Tennis” allows you to become more aggressive and can help control the point.
Tennis Tip John Mullman Director of Tennis Instruction
12 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com
When implementing an “Air Tennis” strategy, you will improve your footwork tremendously. This will confuse your opponents who are used to having more time to prepare. Now, YOU can dictate the style of play on the court! Good luck and have some fun! For more tennis tips, sign up for a lesson with John or any of our tennis professionals!
