Fellow Sports Club Members, Lots going on at the Club this summer: New design for our website, the HP Byron Nelson Championship in May, the Texas Wild and World TeamTennis leagues in July (an opportunity to watch great tennis up close - including Venus Williams and one of the world’s best doubles team – the Bryan Brothers), the summer opening of Racquets restaraunt and the extension of WiFi to the North end of the Club and Resort.

Share the Sports Club Lifestyle! Do you know someone who is interested in Membership? Let the Club reward you for introducing your friends, family or colleagues to The Sports Club! Tennis & Fitness Membership Rewards Menu Select one • $300 in Sports Club credit • One night stay in a Villa Room • Four 50-minute massages or facials (Monday-Thursday) • Five 1-hour personal training sessions • Dinner for four in Café on the Green (excluding alcohol)

If you have eaten in the Members Lounge recently, you have probably experienced a more relaxed setting with a quicker pace of service. If it has been a couple of months since you ate in the Lounge, check it out and give us your feedback. Personally, I think this is a very positive change. We can still enjoy a leisurely meal, but if you are pressed for time, it is much easier to get in and out.

From the Club Manager Rob Cowan In April, the Resort and Club had our “Service Awards” honoring the dedication of our long term employees. It is an amazing annual event showcasing the tenure of our staff. This year the event struck a chord with me as we recognized three senior collegues that I have had the opportunity to work closely with for many years. In many ways they exemplify what The Sports Club is all about. Robin Scott, Director of Sports, and John Mullman, Director of Tennis Instruction, celebrated their 20th anniversaries that night. They both are incredibly dedicated to the Club and are true professionals. Here is a fun fact; I calculated that John has taught Early Bird Tennis lessons, starting at 6:00 a.m… somewhere in the range of 5,000 times! Now that is dedication! Paul Earnest, Director of Golf, celebrated his 15th anniversary as well. Paul is incredibly committed and a leader in his field. Through their hard work, they all have been very influential in shaping the Club in to what it is today and have been great partners to work with year in and year out. Please join me in thanking them for their combined 55 years of service!

The Golf Operations team works very hard to produce the best putting surfaces possible. What makes success difficult, especially in this environment, are the various competing priorities. Examples include plant health vs. putting quality or course conditions vs. costs. Both priorities are important but one comes at the expense of the other. This type of scenario is difficult to manage. Soil air content vs. soil water content is a competing priority that has a huge influence on our greens management program. A green’s root system is critical to success. Most of our management practices, from fertilization to aerification, are designed to protect and promote roots. Properly balancing air vs. water content within the soil directly impacts root health. Adequate water is critical to plant function. Plants harvest water through their root system. Just like us, plant roots require oxygen for respiration. Adequate oxygen therefore is important for proper root function. Both soil water and oxygen are critical but unfortunately, they compete for space within the soil profile. If one increases, the other decreases. To be successful, we must properly balance soil water and soil air content. We accomplish this through appropriate water management. Our goal is to apply enough water to prevent drought stress. No more! No less! By limiting unnecessary water, we maximize soil oxygen content. More oxygen means healthier roots. A healthy root system typically translates into a higher quality putting surface. To help us walk the fine line between too little and too much water, we use specialized moisture meters to determine water requirements. You will see us probing greens throughout the year, especially during the summer months. We will try to limit our impact on your experience. We ask that you please be patient with us. Our efforts are critical to the greens success and your enjoyment of the course.

lignment and aim are critical for the success of a golf shot. Both are taken care of before the club is ever set in motion. Using an aiming stick you can work to improve both aspects during your practice. I like to place the stick about a foot in front of the ball in line with the target. This will allow you to aim the clubface and align your body parts simultaneously. Work to get your shoulders, hips, knees and feet parallel left of the aiming stick and the clubface pointed in line with the stick and at the intended target. Improving your alignment and aim will go a long ways to getting your shots started more consistently at the target.

A

Tennis Tip

well thought out game plan will help you win matches. Don’t show up on the tennis court without an idea of how you’re going to leave with a victory. A key component to winning your matches is patience. Wait for your opportunity to strike. Focus on your opponents one glaring weakness and play accordingly. For example, if your opponent has a hard time with their forehand, keep feeding balls there. Your opponent will start over compensating and will feel the pressure in their weak area. Be relentless and keep them hitting shots from their deficient stroke. Good luck and have fun on the court!
