Rakan Al Hasawi guided his nine-year-old gelding Dennis to a flawless routine to bag the biggest prize of the day, €6,150 as the prestigious QNB Al Rayyan International Show Jumping Championships got off to a flying start at the Qatar Equestrian Federation’s (QEF’s) Outdoor Arena.
Cheril, ridden by Ali Al Khorafi, clocked the second fastest time of 34.91 seconds to bag a prize cheque worth €4,920. Al Khorafi is having a wonderful season following his podium finish in the feature event of last week’s QNB Qatar International Show Jumping Championships. The Al Khorafi – Cheril duo was faster than Qualidam, ridden by seasoned Russian rider Vladimir Tuganov who took 35.11 seconds to finish the routine. In that year, Al Shabab Club was established in east Ahmadi. During that period, school hours changed from twice a day to only once a day and we were able to sign up to play at Al Shabab Club.

fter 12 years in the world of Taekwondo Abrar A l Fa h a d c h o s e to leave it all behind and later fo u n d h e rs e l f i n CrossFit. Competing in regional and local CrossFit competitions Al Fahad is one of the leading female CrossFit athletes in Kuwait. She talks to Fourteen about the switch from Taekwondo, how she found CrossFit, and her experience this year at ELFIT and Battle of the East.
FROM TAEKWONDO TO CROSSFIT
I first got introduced to CrossFit in my last two years before retiring from Taekwondo. I wasn’t take the sport seriously and at that point I was never considering competing in CrossFit. I was just looking for an additional sport that can complement Taekwondo and I was intrigued by CrossFit. I was introduced to CrossFit by my sister who started going to CrossFit classes before me and she highly recommended it for me because of its intensity and competitive nature. I love competition, I am not one of those people that goes to the gym to take care of my health I enjoy and need the competition. I tried it the first time and I loved the class and the sport. At that time there was only one class offered for women at Circuit Plus and it was at 7am. Luckily for me, I had left my job at the same time and though great I can now do CrossFit in the morning and Taekwondo at night. After going to a few classes I discovered that the two sports don’t actually complement each other. Taekwondo focuses on being light and quick on your feet whereas CrossFit exercises makes your movement heavier. So, I decided to drop CrossFit and focus on Taekwondo and told myself that in the future if I stop Taekwondo then the next sport that I will take on will definitely be CrossFit.
Jalil Marvin
In 2015, I retired from Taekwondo and shifted my focus to CrossFit. I had set a goal for myself which was to compete in the GCC Women Games one last time and win the gold medal. As planned, I achieved my goal and brought home the gold medal in Taekwondo in my last participation. I felt that it was the perfect time for me to leave Taekwondo
13
because I wanted to retire while I’m still the best at what I do. I didn’t think I can progress beyond that point and I didn’t want to lose it all and then retire. I didn’t want to give people a chance to say that “Abrar’s time has passed” or anything like that. Thankfully, I was able to leave with a bang winning the gold medal at the GCC Women Games.

In the beginning I used to attend the morning class every day at Circuit Plus, it was only an hour a day, so it wasn’t much but then one of the coaches at Circuit Plus took me under his wing and developed a training program for me. The training program worked on improving my weak points and develop my skills, so I can be ready to participate in competitions. I

followed this program for around a year but then I realized that I had a problem with my diet and it was slowing down my progress. I worked on developing a nutrition program that works well them my training program and in no time, I felt significant improvement during trainings and I was able to hit new records. Since then I have fallen in love with the sport and I have been

participating in CrossFit competitions locally and regionally for the past two and a half years.
ELFIT AND BOE
I participated in ELFIT prior to competing in Battle of the East (BOE) which is a CrossFit competition held in Egypt with 23 different nationalities participating with more than 3 7 0 at h l ete s co m p et i n g at t h e finals. ELFIT is more intense and

Also, while BOE is only 2 days ELFIT went on for 3 days, so when you consider that on the first day I finished 5 workouts, on the second day I finished 3 workouts, and on the third day I finished 3 workouts. In total I did 11 workouts in 3 days at ELFIT while at BOE I did 6 workouts in 2 days. It was my first time at ELFIT and it was a great experience because it was the first time that I competed for 3 days in a row. BOE was right after ELIFT and my body didn’t fully recuperate from ELIFT and it affected my performance at the Battle. If the two tournaments were further apart from each other I would have been able to perform better at BOE and would have gained from both experiences. However, in comparison to last year despite ranking lower than last year but my performance was better than last year. I improved several of my lifting techniques, I

For an example, in the third workout I won joint first place with Amna Bahar. However, I still have some weaknesses to work on, I struggle in workouts that require gymnastics and in the final, I had to ring muscle ups and that ’s what set me apart from the women that made it to the podium.

I usually use this period to assess my development from year to year. This year will be different as the CrossFit Games has changed the region in which Kuwait competes in and as a result the women competing won’t be the same as last year. In the past I used to set a goal for myself to rank in top 100 women in the region and last year I ranked 85th on the region. If we were competing in the same region as last year I would have aspired for top 50 but since this year the region has changed I will aim to rank in the top 100.

WORD TO THE WISE
For anyone who is just starting CrossFit and is looking to continue in this sport, they shouldn’t set goals that are a way too far in the future or plan to compete in a couple of years. They should get used to competing from the start even if they aren’t ready or they don’t think they will do well. You will always do better than you think, and you need to get used to the competition atmosphere from the get go.

LIFESTYLE HABITS How to change your lifestyle habits for the better
Written by Faisal Al Shawa | Founder of Believe Nutrition
W
hat springs to mind when you hear the words ‘healthy lifestyle’? I’d like to think it’s mind, body and soul. Well, that’s what comes to mind for me at least. It’s true. A healthy lifestyle isn’t just about eating right, or going to the gym everyday. It’s about changing your habits and behaviors to make a healthy living a part of you. It’s only when you change your habits and behaviors do you see long-term change and genuinely start living a healthy lifestyle. Changing habits doesn’t come easy, though. It needs time and daily practice. You also have to know how to change your habits, and here’s 5 rules to do that. 1.Simplicity
The key to habit change is to keep things simple. The simpler your habit change is, the more you’re able to focus on this habit and actually
Left: Courtesy of Faisal Al Shawa
change it for the better. Having complex habit changes will only lead you to drop out. 2. Break it down
Think of a time you were learning a new skill. Did you jump straight to the end goal? Of course not! You worked on small skills, and built on each skill from the previous one to then work towards the end goal. This is how you should approach habit change. Think about your ultimate goal, and break it into smaller skills in order to work gradually and progressively towards the bigger goal. 3. Be organized
So you’ve kept your habits simple, you’ve broken it down into smaller skill sets, now it’s time to be organized with working on such skills. You don’t want to be all over the place and work on different goals, at different times. Make sure you follow an organized system to work on your smaller skill sets in the right order and in the right time.
36
2. Focus
It’s key to put your complete focus on that one habit you are trying to change. By staying focused all the time, you’ll be able to stay on the right track and successfully tackle the obstacles that come your way. Focus helps make a difficult journey easier. 2. Get support
Nothing comes easy. And nothing comes without getting proper support. Whether you have a mentor, coach or teacher, make sure you are getting some sort of support to help you throughout your journey of habit change. If you follow these 5 rules of habit change you’ll find yourself able to live a healthy lifestyle. As I already mentioned, it’s very important to keep in mind that change takes time, effort, sacrifice and practice. Once you accept this, you’ll be strong enough to overcome the difficulties which may arise with a lifestyle change. It’s worth it, believe me.

SOUP IT! Written by Dalal Al-Nukhailan - Nutrition Consulting Co.
I
ts winter season! Let’s all stay warm and happy. I know many of you tend to skip a cold salad, making their diets lack the benefits of vegetables. o squeeze in your veggies while enjoying warm sips that keeps you satisfied and full.

Soups can be very nutritious and filled with vitamins and minerals; it can be a whole meal if you like it to be so. The ingredients list is endless - you can utilize it as a source of carbohy-
37
drates, proteins, healthy fats, just make sure to avoid the unhealthy fats of which I’ll help you to avoid. A soup can be high in fiber, keeping you full for a longer time, low in calories if the proteins chosen are lean, and nutritionally dense.
fourteen
Here are 5 top reasons why you should include a soup within at least one of your daily meals:
1
It takes time to eat/sip it – starting with an appetiser creates an introduction to the digestive system and hormonal reaction. In order to feel full and satisfied, it takes 15-20mins to send that signal to the brain, so spend some of that time with a soup to begin the process!
2
Soup will help you eat some veggies- if you are one of those people who can’t stand eating a steamed broccoli or sautéed cauliflower, give them another shot when they ’re blended into a warm soup!
3
Helps in losing weight- a soup with smart ingredients should be low in calories and aid in hydrating your body, as most healthy soups are mostly water based
4
Increases fiber intake- fiber regulates blood glucose levels, aids
Jalil Marvin
in digestion, and keeps you full for a longer time, so next time you have a soup add as many veggies and legumes as you can, to ensure your soup contains a fair amount of fiber.
BUTTER – Butter is another game changer. While it may taste good, it can be too easy to get used to the flavor it provides and make it harder to enjoy healthier soups without it.
5
PACKAGED/DRY MIXES – Soups that are found in powdered form with a ‘’Just add water to it!’’ claim are filled with MSGs, high in sodium, high in preservatives. Healthy soups are those that are made from scratch and from fresh ingredients.
Time saver – those with busy schedules who tend to skip main meals end up relying on very little food, leading to energy level deficits. A quick soup during your busy schedule would be a superb option, just like how athletes sip protein shakes to complete their protein intakes, go ahead and sip a soup rather than a coffee or a smoothie for this winter.
top ingredients to avoid in soups: CREAM – Cream means loads of unwanted unhealthy fats. Creamy soups will add a large amount of extra, unwanted calories from fats. Not a smart choice.
38
CANNED SOUPS – Canned soups can also be a tricky choice, as long expiration dates mean a load of preservative and chemicals added to keep it safe for ingestion. CHEESE – Most of the cheese options are very fatty, adding a tremendous amount of calories and slowing down the digestion process. Cheese can be tempting but try to be smarter and keep your soup a healthy option. www.dalalimpact.com/ @dalalimpactkw
