president’s perspective •

I usually try to write my perspective based on the topic of this month’s magazine but I thought I would take the time today to give you a little insight on our last 18 months here at the chamber.

A dedicated team – As members, you should know that you have one of the most committed and dedicated staff teams that I have ever seen. We have great experience, passion, and leadership here at the chamber. Our team is truly your partner in helping your business grow and succeed.

A revived program of work – There is definitely a sense of renewed energy here at the chamber within our staff and our volunteers. We have been adding a tremendous amount of new programming and revitalizing some of the great programs that we have always done. Members now have countless opportunities to engage in the chamber. I will just highlight a few of these critical programs.

Economic Development – One of our leading initiatives is launching the Economic Development Alliance which will aggressively focus on attraction of new businesses, expansion of existing industries, and retention of those great companies to further lead to economic prosperity and success. A strong program of work with solid metrics has been established, crucial investments are now being pledged and we are moving forward with this exciting initiative. We need you to become aware and get engaged.

Competitive Workforce – Workforce is one of the leading challenges facing our companies and our region. We need access to qualified educated workers, we need to increase the capacity of workforce as the demands are ever-increasing and we need to assist in better connecting the education world to the business world.

Plexus, headquartered in Neenah, began operations in 1979. The company was founded by two entrepreneurs interested in a venture to design and build computer circuit boards by contract. The company is a provider of a unique menu of Product Realization Solutions and offers customers a full suite of solutions from ideation, into prototype production, supply chain design & materials management, onto volume manufacturing, and beyond with world-class order fulfillment and sustaining solutions.

Plexus prides itself on its very strong balance sheet and has experienced total revenue growth of 44.3 percent over the past five years. Most recently, from 2010 to 2011 Plexus grew revenue by approximately 11 percent. Fiscal 2011 was a good year for Plexus with organic revenue growth of 10.8 percent and noted revenue growth in all regions: the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Plexus has witnessed sustained and continued employee growth over the past five years.

Since 2007, there has been almost a 12.5 percent growth of local employees with an overall total employee growth of just over 21 percent. Today, the company employs more than 9,000 employees world-wide with more than 2,300 employees in Wisconsin alone.

The company bases their many outstanding achievements on industry-leading services and cutting-edge technologies that make the business model appealing to customers around the world. A strong focus is placed on customer service and providing an outstanding customer experience in every interaction. This responsibility is shared by every employee within Plexus.

In 1995, Plexus formed The Plexus Corp. Charitable Foundation, Inc. for the sole purpose of making charitable donations on behalf of Plexus Corp. In 2002, a group of investors, led by Town & Country Electric and SKC Electric managers, bought Town & Country Electric and SKC Electric from Encompass to form Faith Technologies, Inc. Roland G. Stephenson, Faith Technologies’ Chief Executive Officer, has led Town & Country Electric since its founding in 1972, as well as, SKC Electric since its integration with Town & Country Electric in 2001. In 2008, the organization transitioned the Town & Country Electric and SKC Electric brands to Faith Technologies to present a unified name further supporting the growing national presence.

Faith Technologies is now one of America’s 20 largest electrical and technical service contractors, with a workforce of over 1,500 employees. The company has increased employees from 1,400 in 2007 to 1,549 today. The skill and experience level of the company’s employees are critical to a highly specialized services business’ success.

Business of the Year – Wholesale/Retail: Jacobs Market, Inc. 544 N. Lawe Street, Appleton, WI www.jacobsmeatmarket.com Luke Jacobs, President Year established: 1945 Number of employees: 15 Number of locations: 1 Brief description: Retail meat market that makes sausages and hand-cuts fresh meats. Jacobs also carries a “full” line of groceries to give customers a great experience and nutritious foods at an honest price.

Jacobs Market, Inc. was founded in 1945 by the grandfather of the current owner and his brother. The company started as a neighborhood grocery store with an exceptional meat and sausage selection and has sustained the same location all these years.

The store was remodeled in 2005 and added a freezer section for easy customer access to great meats and sausages as well as heat-and-eat options that are home-style, wholesome meals. The store had to adapt with the times to fit the needs of customers who are on-the-go.

Jacobs has experienced a 30 percent increase in sales over the past five years. They have sustained the same number of employees, and increased their hours by about 40 percent.

The company has always put customer service first, from the moment a customer enters the store, it all starts with how they feel at the entrance. Jacobs provides service that you can’t get at larger chain stores, face-to-face contact. The store also focuses on top quality products which keep customers coming back again and again.

The company donates back to the community giving to churches, personal fundraisers, non-profit organizations, schools, and clubs. But there is a personal touch to giving as well.

Sometimes people walk in off the street and say they need food and will “pay them back” when they get money. Jacobs knows they probably will never get paid back, but the feeling of helping one person or family at a time is the personal touch that has kept this a family business since 1945.

Rising Star – Service: Carmella’s Italian Bistro 716 N. Casaloma Dr. Appleton, WI www.carmellasbistro.com Nicole DeFranza Beardsley and Kristen Sickler, co-owners Year established: 2009 Number of employees: 55 Number of locations: 1 Brief description: Full service restaurant with beer and wine service. We provide our guests with the best possible food service and atmosphere in the Fox Valley.

Carmella’s Italian Bistro opened in November 2009 by sisters Nicole DeFranza Beardsley and Kristen Sickler and is named after their grandmother Carmella. The sisters grew up in the restaurant business as their father, Larry, owned Lunda’s in Neenah. He taught the girls authentic recipes, trained them to make sure the meals were always consistent and delicious, with a variety of flavors using fresh produce and meats from area suppliers.

Using mostly part-time employees and family members, they have grown from 20 employees to more than 50 today. They have consistently won the best wait staff award for outstanding service, which keeps people coming back to enjoy the atmosphere and excellent food. The sisters claim their goal is to create a family atmosphere with their team of employees. When their employees work together as family, it translates back to giving their guests the best possible dining experience in the Fox Valley.

Since opening, Carmella’s has added a catering business, expanded to a beautiful patio that includes heaters to be able to maximize space as well as comfortable dining for guests as long as weather permits. Their private room space enabled them to enlarge their kitchen and add more restrooms. The restaurant also does a strong takeout business to many of the area hotels as well as shuttling patrons to the restaurant and then picking them up to return them to the hotel.

The attention to detail from the owners, cooks, dishwashers, bussers and wait staff is the best around. Everyone tries to remember your name, your favorite beverage, and they make excellent recommendations when you are undecided. They are also continually finding new ways to say thank you to their clients. One way is to gift their famous cupcakes on special occasions! Carmella’s is always looking for ways to make your experience one-of-a-kind.

The sisters marketing strategy is not based on advertising, but rather on giving back to the community in the form of gift certificates, gift baskets that include their homemade sauces, and discounts on food, all in the name of good causes for the community. These donations are a strategic part of their overall budget and work well as the company celebrates a debt-free bottom line.

The Meat Block opened its doors in April 2010 as a full-service meat market featuring catering and a complete line of meat and grocery related products. The company offers prepared heat and eat meals, homemade pizzas, wines, venison processing, catering, and a continually expanding menu of choices.

The Meat Block consistently looks for opportunities to expand the product line and exposure to customers by adding to the high quality line of homemade meat products and homemade soups using signature recipes. The company is also supplying their products through several other local retailers.

The customer experience is of utmost importance. Each customer is greeted personally by a staff person who works with them throughout their shopping experience as needed and offers personal delivery to the customer’s vehicle for those in need of assistance.

Since opening, there has been continual growth in sales increasing 118 percent from 2010 to 2011 and projecting a 30 percent increase for 2012. Employees have grown from two full-time and two part-time employees at the start to four full-time and nine part-time employees today.

The company actively supports organizations and businesses in the Fox Valley and Greenville including: providing meat products for fundraisers such as the Greenville Fire Department brat fry, Greenville Lions Catfish Races and many others. In addition, the company supports many local benefits as requested by customers from time to time.

Sure-Dry Basement Systems are also crawlspace environment experts that deal with crawlspace moisture control, vapor barriers and ventilation.

With the mobile device market skyrocketing over the past few years, Sure-Dry Basement Systems wanted to remain on the forefront of this new platform technology. The company implemented a mobile site to help people access information easily when they aren’t by a computer, typically in their basement when a problem arises. The mobile site is presented in an easy-to-read, user-friendly format so that visitors can learn more about the products and services, then simply click the phone number on the site to call for a free estimate. Users can also switch to the full website on their computer by clicking the “go to main site” link at the bottom of our mobile website.

By creating a unique domain name and phone number, and incorporating this information into Sure-Dry’s marketing materials, the company is able to track how many people respond to a particular advertisement using MyLeadTracking. Tracking can be done on radio ads, TV ads, print ads, internet ads, billboards. Any advertisement or “campaign” created within the company will produce results of each campaign, which are able to be viewed by the company.

The best part of MyLeadTracking, is that it helps to decide where to best spend advertising dollars or cut campaigns that perform poorly, based on the tracking capability.

Sure-Dry Basement Systems understands that branding is a very important part of the company’s image to customers, prospects and suppliers. Earlier this year it was decided that Sure-Dry would incorporate a unique trade-marked headline that would capture people’s interests the moment that they see the headline, “All Things Basementy” to encompasses all services including waterproofing, finishing, structural repairs, humidity and mold control. The owner, Doug Newhouse, is featured to provide an increased level of trust when the owner is the spokesperson for the company.

The business has experienced an unusual increase in web traffic, revenue, visibility and important recognition and awards around their marketing and communication efforts.

The business has seen more than a 38 percent increase in direct traffic from 2010 to 2011. A 16 percent increase in searches that contained the word “sure dry” during the same time period.

The number of leads increased 10 percent as well. Internet leads now account for 32 percent of Sure-Dry’s overall lead total which is more than any other lead source.

As a single source for all of the firm’s research, it also has eliminated wasted time that would have been spent gathering data from other sources, validating the accuracy of that data and applying it to the investment management process. An additional feature of clearTREND™ is its built-in ability to be demonstrated to any potential user remotely. As a cloud-based software application, it can literally be accessed from any internet-ready location, making communication with clients and prospective clients more efficient.

The company contributes in many different ways including the Culvers Invitational Golf Outing which benefits local non-profit agencies annually, “School Nites” where a percentage of the sales for a particular evening are given back to a certain school and host 10 percent days for American Red Cross, where 10 percent of the sales is given to the organization.

Monthly lunches are held for Habitat for Humanity build sites. Assistance is given to the WEMI Christmas Care campaign by filling shoeboxes that are handed out to local shelters and emergency rooms at Christmas time. The company is also the Volunteer Coordinator for the March of Dimes Chefs Auction organizing the volunteers needed for the event.

Christmas Eve is a special time when the company hosts a dinner, complete with Santa and gifts for 300 area families who are down on their luck. The staff and their families donate their time to help make the holiday memorable for all who participate.

For business owners in Northeast Wisconsin, that means they may no longer be dealing with a partner who has the depth of knowledge about the local economy or an understanding of their particular business. In some cases, decisions that used to be made locally have been taken offsite, and while there are plenty of products and resources to choose from, finding a partner who can dispense sage advice is at a premium.

It can be a frustrating experience.

Wisconsin’s community banks are working hard to fill this void and provide the small and medium businesses on Main Street with the help they need to keep their companies going until the recovery truly finds its stride. While community banks hold only 39 percent of the nation’s banking deposits, they make nearly 80 percent of all Small Business Administration (SBA) loans, making them critical for small business access to capital.

But it’s more than just access to loans. Cash Flow Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business, large or small. But the conversations need to be deeper than the cash you have on hand at any given point in time. Small Business Success Story: FVTC Provides Resources for Growth

For Carol Brauer, a smart business investment had lot to do with enthusiasm and people — perhaps a bit atypical from the standard emphasis on money, research, and marketing. Obviously, these elements are vital to small business success, but for Brauer, her entrepreneurial leap depended on the reputation and personal nature of Fox Valley Technical College’s Business and Industry Services division.

Brauer is franchise owner of BrightStar Care, a full continuum provider of homecare, childcare, and medical staffing, serving five counties in the region. Since opening her franchise in 2006 with two staff members, today Brauer has 60 employees.

She attributes much of her success to always doing the right thing every day for her employees, clients, and referral sources.

Training through Fox Valley Tech made me realize the road to a better bottom line is through agile leadership, removing variance in procedures, and embracing change.” Brauer completed the Venter Center’s E-Seed and Pro-Seed entrepreneur training programs. E-Seed helps aspiring entrepreneurs launch their business, while Pro-Seed focuses on small business growth and planning. Now, FVTC has partnered with Differentiating Strategies, an organization devoted to provide strategy development and execution advice to senior-level leaders.

Brauer is currently working with both organizations in planning her company’s road map for the future. FVTC remains a state leader in providing services to business and industry because of its mobilization of resources that keep industries competitive, lean, and up-to-date on advanced skills.

Resilience to the Rescue for Stressed Employers and Employees Feeling stressed? We all experience it. A modest amount of stress – usually cyclical and offset by periods of relative calm and security – can be normal. But sustained high levels of stress can be hazardous to your health, leading to hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, ulcers, and neck or low-back pain.

In the workplace, stress can also affect work performance, personal and professional relationships, and even the employer’s bottom line. Keeping a sense of humor during difficult situations is a common recommendation from stressmanagement experts.

Wisconsin residents apparently know a thing or two about managing stress. According to UnitedHealth Foundation’s 2011 America’s Health Rankings®, Wisconsin ranks 8th among all 50 states when it comes to poor mental health days – days in which an employee is physically at work, but not fully productive due to stress and physical or mental health issues.

The good news is that stress is manageable. Consider the following four categories of stress relievers: •

Biological Reactions - relaxation, meditation, and improved diet, exercise and sleep habits

•

Environmental Conditions - better time management, conflict management and delegating responsibilities at work and home

•

Individual Actions - assertiveness training, accepting criticism without overreacting and avoiding substance abuse

•

Workplace Changes - having a well-defined job, being clear about goals and priorities, being involved in worthwhile work, and adequate staffing

The goal of these practical steps is to create “resilience” in individuals and in the workplace, or having strength in the midst of change and stress, and the power to spring back and recover readily from adversity. Support from friends and colleagues is also important, while avoiding people and environments that drive negative attitudes also help.

Research has shown that humor is another very effective mechanism for coping with acute stress. Keeping a sense of humor during difficult situations is a common recommendation from stress-management experts. Laughter not only releases the tension of pent-up feelings and helps keep perspective, but it appears to have actual physical effects that reduce stress hormone levels.

According to the American Cancer Society, laughter can increase breathing, oxygen use, and heart rate, and also cause short-term changes in hormones and certain neurotransmitters.

Psychologically, laughter also may act as a coping mechanism to reduce stress and psychological symptoms related to negative life events. In short, laughter can improve self-esteem and mental health while lowering levels of loneliness and depression.

Opening Day As a baseball fan (some would say fanatic) since childhood, I absolutely love the excitement associated with Opening Day. A new season, a fresh start, full of promise and with the same level of opportunity statistically as any other team in the league; I could argue that Opening Day should be a national holiday.

Absent the pageantry and flyovers, I can feel the same level of heightened excitement and anticipation with regard to the Ignite Fox Cities economic development initiative.

(Okay, perhaps I exaggerate a bit, but still … extremely exciting) Ignite Fox Cities, the Fox Cities Chamber’s new Economic Development Alliance, will develop three program areas intended to strengthen and expand the region’s primary job base: Contributed by: Larry Burkhardt, CEDO

1. Existing industry retention/expansion 2. New industry attraction 3. Entrepreneurial support While each is key to the local economy’s vibrancy and diversification, the Economic Development Alliance will focus its initial efforts on outreach and support to our existing companies. We believe that this strategy will pay the greatest dividends over both the short term and long term for the following reasons.

First, it has been shown that as a statistical average across the country, some 70% of an area’s new primary job growth will come from the companies that have a history of local success. This makes perfect sense, particularly when one considers the fact that these firms have aggressive business development programs, R & D for new product development, local suppliers, and are focused on growing their bottom line. Couple this with the massive costs, general business disruption and potential loss of valuable staff that will typically be involved with a corporate relocation from one community to another; it becomes clear that an economic development effort can see its greatest return on investment from establishing and cultivating productive relationships with the companies in its own backyard.

Ignite Fox Cities will work to become the area’s point of contact for local industry that needs assistance with business challenges such as workforce, financial, regulatory and other issues, as well as those with opportunities for growth and expansion. Our role will be to serve as a facilitator to provide access and coordinate delivery of business assistance resources that are available from a variety of area resource partners. We will strive to be problem solvers — utilizing the talents and expertise not only of our own staff, but also those of experts here and around the country, to the benefit of our local companies.

We must also be aware of the fact that our local companies are regular industry attraction targets for the 5,000 or so economic development organizations around the country that are looking to expand their own job base. Those economic development groups that devote themselves entirely to attempts at bringing new industry into their front door — losing touch with the companies already within their own boundaries, can be caught flatfooted by the exit of local businesses leaving through the back door.

In addition, existing companies will often serve as the community’s strongest ambassadors for those businesses that are considering a move into the area. If such a company wishes to get an accurate read on the competitiveness of an area, it will likely avoid making their first calls to the chamber of commerce, economic development corporation or the Mayor’s office; but will instead contact a local industry peer in order to assess that company’s experience. Typical questions from a prospective employer to their counterpart with a history in the area will include: •

Are you able to attract and retain quality employees, and what sort of salary and benefits are necessary to do so?

•

Will the local regulatory climate allow my company to successfully compete regionally, nationally and internationally?

•

Tell me about the quality of the local schools — schools that I will ask my employees to enroll their children in, and schools that will provide the pipeline for my future workforce.

We are actively engaging members in a Competitive Workforce Alliance that will focus on all of these challenges and will produce results that will significantly impact the success of our companies.

•

Legislative Affairs/Public Policy – We continue to advocate at the local, state and federal level on issues that affect our businesses in the region.

•

Professional Development – Many of our members look to us to provide them affordable, impactful training opportunities in leadership, professional and business development. Our Leadership Fox Cities program has expanded to include an Executive Leadership Program dedicated to newly recruited senior level management and their spouse to ensure strong connections to the community and retention, and a Youth Leadership Program that will launch in the fall for high school students to better develop their leadership skills and familiarize them with the workings of the region.

•

Member Services – We are all about our members, working for our members. Additional networking programs have been established, events have been revitalized to engage even more of our members, and a quarterly series is being established to help you better cultivate your business.

I have barely scratched the surface on the exciting initiatives here at the chamber, but I will be updating all of you each month. Please get engaged with your chamber. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed and you will see direct rewards to your business and your professional growth.

accolades Dr. Susan May, president of Fox Valley Technical College, was appointed to serve on the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) Board of Directors.

The NACCE is the nation’s leading organization in promoting entrepreneurship training through two-year colleges.

Chris Hanson, owner of Hanson Benefits, has been appointed to the Health Insurance Sharing Plan Authority Board (HIRSP), www.hirsp.org. She joins four other newly appointed healthcare experts.

Hanson, a Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce Athena Award recipient, brings over 25 years of health care and insurance experience. She is one of the founders of the Well City-Fox Cities initiative and is an endorsed agent for eight Chamber of Commerce organizations in Northeastern Wisconsin. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Employee Benefits Advisors (WEBA), Wisconsin Family Council and Community Impact. The mission of the HIRSP Authority is to provide access to high quality, affordable healthcare for all eligible Wisconsin residents. It includes 14 members, 13 of which are appointed by the Governor for three year terms.

“These five people have all been active in their communities and truly care about the citizens of Wisconsin,” Governor Scott Walker said. “I look forward to working with them and I challenge them to use their time and talents to make healthcare available for all.”

Coalesce, Inc., a strategic marketing and communications agency based in Appleton, was recognized by the National Advertising Federation with a silver national ADDY Award for the agency’s Sales Promotion Point of Purchase category entry. The Sales Promotion Point of Purchase entry is a custom sampling kit designed to showcase Coalesce client, Verdi® Olives, and assist the brand’s sales team as it pitches the authentic, Italian-import product to various retail partners.

National finalists were invited to compete in the National ADDY Awards, including advertising agencies and other organizations from across the country. An esteemed panel of judges selected the winners, which were announced at an awards ceremony on June 5, 2012 in Austin, Texas. Before winning at the national level, Coalesce’s work was previously recognized at both the local and district levels, allowing the entry to advance to the national competition. “Our team is both honored and humbled for our work to be recognized among the best of the best in the advertising world,” says

William D. Goodman, CPA, president, Schenck SC in Milwaukee, Wis., is the recipient of the WICPA Distinguished Career Award. The Distinguished Career Award is given to members who have shown leadership, have made significant contributions to the profession and have outstanding records of service to the WICPA and the local community. “I believe the measure of a leader is the success of the people around them. During my involvement within the CPA profession and as a practicing CPA, I have had the great fortune of working with a number of extremely successful individuals. Receiving distinction through association with these fine professionals is wonderful yet humbling.” Goodman’s background includes over twenty years of client service and progressive administrative leadership experience in the Wisconsin public accounting industry. He joined Schenck as President in 2003. Prior to that, he was the managing partner of KPMG’s Milwaukee office.

P.E. designations demonstrate that you have mastered the knowledge, acquired the experience, and are committed to the highest standards of engineering practice. Mr. Epley is a structural engineer in OMNNI’s transportation group.

His responsibilities include design and plan production for new bridges and rehabilitation projects. Mr. Berg is a transportation engineer with experience in the design of highways and roundabouts.

The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce and Industry is proud to welcome Larry Burkhardt as the new Chief Economic Development Officer (CEDO) of the Economic Development Alliance (EDA) through the Chamber. Burkhardt’s experience in economic development spans more than twenty years, and includes positions as President/CEO of Upstate Colorado Economic Development; the first President/CEO of the Nevada County Economic Resource Council, located in Grass Valley, California; and President/CEO of the Economic Development Association of

Longmont, Colorado. He is a Certified Economic Developer through the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute. He holds a designation as an Economic Development Finance Professional through the National Development Council (NDC). While he was at Upstate Colorado, the area saw significant job growth, with several large corporate locations and expansions--including three Vestas Wind Systems factories, Leprino Foods, JBS, Abound Solar, Hexcel, Inc. and others. Overall, the primary employers that Upstate worked with, both new and existing, announced the creation of more than 7,300 new jobs and capital investment in excess of $2.3 billion during the six years that Burkhardt served as the organization’s President/ CEO. During the same time, the area was identified by Forbes Magazine as the #1 MSA in the country for five-year income growth; and by the Milken Institute as #10 in one-year job growth. Upstate Colorado led the State of Colorado in new employment growth throughout 2010 and for the first quarter of 2011. In this new role, Burkhardt will be responsible for creation, implementation and oversight of the Economic Development Alliance, the premier sub-region economic development entity through the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce. He will initiate programs focused on attraction, retention, expansion and gardening of new and existing businesses within the region. Burkhardt began in his new role on May 17, 2012 and is in the process of relocating from Colorado. In the process of selecting the Chief Economic Development Officer, the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce utilized the resources of Sharon Hulce and Employment Resource Group to facilitate the interviewing and hiring process. More than 50 resumes were accepted from local and national candidates in order to select the new CEDO.

The store opens to the community June 4th, just in time for the recent release of 4G LTE service in the Oshkosh area, and features direct visibility from Highway 41. The new store at 1280 S. Koeller Road is approximately 2,387 square feet, nearly double the size of its former Oshkosh location at 1956 S. Koeller Road. Scheduled to open June 25, Buca di Beppo is set to have its first restaurant location at the Fox River Mall in Appleton, WI. The new Buca di Beppo location will feature seating for up to 175 guests. Staying true to the traditions that have made Buca di Beppo a popular casual-dining Italian restaurant group with more than ninety-four locations in the United States, Mexico and Europe, the restaurant will feature its signature quirky décor, complete with irreverent photographs, strings of multi-colored decorative lights, gingham tablecloths and over-the-top service. The Buca di Beppo Appleton menu will include generous portions of quality house-made cuisine including such favorites as freshly baked Lasagna, Spaghetti with Meatballs “as big as your head,” Spicy Chicken Rigatoni or Veal Saltimbocca.
