College Counseling FOCUSED ON THE INDIVIDUAL GIRL

The College Process: Student Centered FOCUS ON THE INDIVIDUAL GIRL Foxcroft School promotes a balanced approach to the college admission process. It starts with a focus on the individual girl: her strengths, her interests, and her goals. It builds on making the most of Foxcroft's outstanding educational opportunities and emphasizes the partnership among students, parents, and the College Counseling Office. Parents play an active role while encouraging their daughters to take ownership of their college exploration and application process. Our Director of College Counseling developed an approach, Five First-Choice Colleges, which helps reduce stress and improve outcomes in the college admission process, and each student benefits from this strategy.

FOXCROFT'S ROLE

PARENT'S ROLE

Availability and Communication: We are committed to meeting regularly with students and parents in order to help explore college opportunities.

We believe strongly that a student must assume ownership of her college process. Parents also play a vital role in key areas of participation that include:

Advocacy: In addition to writing the school recommendation included with each transcript package, the Director of College Counseling communicates directly with admission offices to provide in-depth information about each student. Instruction and Guidance: The Director conducts weekly sessions of College Counseling Seminar for Juniors each spring and meets regularly with individual girls to identify goals and strategies.

The Student's Role FRESHMEN Establish a strong foundation. • Work hard in your classes! • Get involved in the school community through clubs, athletics, and service. • Discover your learning style; this will help you stay strong in and out of the classroom. • Get a summer job, travel, or volunteer based on your interests and skills.

SOPHOMORES Study hard, explore special skills and interests. • Continue building your academic strengths, in and out of the classroom. • Try something new with an eye toward leadership opportunities. • Take the PSAT (the "practice SAT") to prepare for college testing. • Take SAT Subject Tests, if appropriate.

JUNIORS Advance your academic experiences and start your college search. • Take the PSAT in October. • Attend information sessions when college admissions representatives visit. • Attend weekly College Seminars and participate in the College Admissions Essay Writing Workshop. • Encourage your parents to attend our Junior Parents' College Program. • Take the ACT Plus Writing, SAT with Essay, and if appropriate, SAT Subject Tests in the spring.

SENIORS Map out your college application strategy and follow it. • When school starts, have 5–8 colleges identified, including Five First-Choice Colleges, as well as drafts of college essays. • Keep your grades up! Take the ACT Plus Writing again in September, the SAT with Essay again in October, and SAT Subject Tests, if appropriate, in November. • Participate in meaningful activities. Update your resume. • Keep track of all your colleges' deadlines. Submit your applications on time — after reviewing them with the Director of College Counseling. • Make your final college choice! Submit the required deposit to your chosen college by the National Notification Date–May 1. • Notify other schools who offered admission that you will not attend.
