Use extreme caution on walking trails and FVTC grounds on Appleton campus -- ice alert! While the snow team is diligent in snow removal and salting, the combination of weather (above 32 and well below zero) we have had over the last several weeks has created ice patches not only on parts of the walk trail but on the grounds. These ice patches are now covered with a small amount of light snow from last night so the ice is not visible. The team is working on breaking up the larger pieces of ice on the trails and applying additional salt where needed. Please exercise extreme caution if you walk on any of the trails on campus that are open for the winter. Please stay on trails or on sidewalks as dangerous ice is all throughout the grounds. If you see any area needing attention, please contact Facilities at735-2469

People gathered in front of the State Capitol Building in Madison and protesting.

poster hold by a middle-aged lady. She was not alone. She was with hundreds of people, men and women walked together along the State Street to the Wisconsin State Capitol Building in Madison. They gathered on the street on Saturday morning, January 21, 2017. All of them have one mission: to aspirate their hopes and critics after the inauguration of the new elected President of United States of America, Donald John Trump on January 20, 2017. There were some speakers as the leaders of the

march who communicated many concerns, including the equal rights for women across the country, racial equality, and climate change awareness. More than that, some of protesters also wore costumes, such as Liberty Statue, all-in-pink clothing, batman, etc. They proudly hold and showed their posters; “woman’s rights are human rights too”, “when they go low, we go high”, “make America great again”, “love Trump hate”. Even some children joined their parents in this occasion too, they hold tightly their own posters fighting for their rights or opposing current elected President. Here are some pictures of the event:

“Stars”

Poetry by Nkululeko Masombuka We are the stars that arise along with the sun please don’t excuse the pun We glow groriously in darkness we are true stars, we are measured in light years we live beyond our frears we are the joy of our mothers and the pride of our fathers

we know that the true definition of fun has nothng to do with kids playing a policeman with a guyn we see things through the light of the son we are philo-sophia... lovers of knowledge lifetime seeekers of information we understand that you can never out live your own persuasion and success is not an occasion we buy thoghts captured through maditation we offer mental emancipation creativity liberation.

we dream with our eyes open

we are concerned about the ideas we get when we pay attention

we have mouths unders our feets

in order to buy your concentration.

we walk whlile we speak

we accumilate the kind of knowledge one can never find in college.

because suceess doesn\t come through cheap statements We are the stars that arise along with the sun

for universities can only give you the inspiration to learn but it is your passion for information that will make you touch and shake nations.

please don’t excuse the pun We are the stars that arise along with the sun If dreams are for those who are asleep that I must be sleep walking and I’m not stopping couse my vision is clear. Don’t strive to be the driver rather be driven by your dreams for many are the devices in a man’s heart but it is the Lord’s counsel that shall prevail. It is your vision that will out weight the scale of your ambitions for vision and purpose are intertwine. We are the stars that arise along with the sun please don’t excuse the pun

please don’t excuse the pun We have broken the curse of imitation we go beyond the bounderies of limitation we do not limit ourselves with our own thinking but we think big, we see the future with the eyes of our minds and we not blinking we relate with God in the same ship and its not sinking This poem is just a drop in an ocean in comperison to what we are thinking. We are the stars that arise along with the sun please don’t excuse the pun

“Sense of Deserving” Realize that you are deserving of success, health, wealth and happiness.

Aunt E’s Story “A sense of entitlement is like fuel to the flame of your desire” -Nkululeko Victor Masombuka My Aunt Enny Mahlaba has a robust sense of deserving. She also grew up in Siyabuswa like me but much earlier than me because she if like 15 or more years older than me. Grew up poor, being the youngest of 5 children of my grandparents she had a lot of people to observe and emulate. She was inspired by Babu Masango a rich businessman who lived next door. She liked his discipline, his neatness and the symbol of his success that could be seen in the cars he drove, house he lived in and the latest devices and appliances. He was the first man in our street or area to own a television in his house, he drove BMW’s etc. Please note that my point

18

FVTC Student Publication | January | February | 2017

is not in the man’s material possession but rather in what inspired my aunt. She had a strong desire to be like that man. To drive a BMW to have a nice house etc. Years went by then in 2000 she got married to her husband Mr Mahlaba, happily married and blessed with 2 smart boys Katlego and Tshepo Mahlaba. They bought a house in Kempton Park, a lovely home. After a few years living in that house, she was not satisfied; she felt that she deserved more. In her own words she told me that she felt like that house was the same as my grandmother’s house in Siyabuswa and it was not fitting for her. She wanted a bigger and a better house. After discussions with her husband they both agreed and decided to sell that house and move to a bigger house, the odds were against them but they persisted to acquire a stand in Savannah hill estate and built their double story splendid home that they now live in. She had a burning desire that she deserved a better home, a better life. What a sense of deserving does in a man is to push him or her to their greatness. A man that has a sense of deserving refuses to settle for less, you have complete faith in yourself that you deserve the best because you are the best. This My Aunt demonstrated when 2 years after such a big acquisition she resigned at her job. She was working at the National Treasury it was a great job, wellpaying with benefits etc. but she still refused to settle for that. She’s been working there for close to ten years when she resigned saying she wants to move to something better and bigger. After 10 years of work she decided to go back to school to study towards a degree in financial economics with the University of South Africa for full 3 years. While studying she started her business Bakhele Investments and construction, where she is buying land and building houses for people. She has a strong sense of deserving, for no man can have such a strong drive unless by the Spirit of the Lord and a sense of deservingness. She has recently graduated from UNISA and who knows from here onwards the sky is the limit. You deserve Good! You are only motivated to pursuit that which you feel you deserve.

Jeff Ireton “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” -Socrates

If you’re here during the lunch hour you’ve definitely seen Jeff. He’s one of our hardest working lifters here at the gym. Growing up the scrawny kid he always felt inferior and felt a natural drive to workout. It was during his first deployment that it went from an interest to a passion, dedicating himself to physical enlightenment. Facilitated and encouraged by the Marine Corps and later solidified by Socrates, his passion for exercise and a healthy lifestyle became what it is today. Jeff continues his hard

work so he can have more freedom in his diet and to get himself a special lady ;) When he’s here, he’s always hitting the heavy weights and finishes up with a jog on the treadmill or maybe a couple hundred flights of stairs on the StairMaster. Although he does enjoy his pizza and candy his favorite healthy meal is chicken and green beans. While working out is one of his passions, he is equally as much a computer nerd, and is currently pursing a degree as an Information Systems Security Specialist.

February FVTC Well Student Spotlight It has been one year since Morgan was our Well Student Spotlight. A few things have changed but Morgan still works hard on her goal to be the best version of herself. Her biggest inspiration is herself, saying, “I’m happiest when I’m working out everyday and eating healthy.” Morgan has put on about 20lbs of lean muscle weight and has made significant increases in her lifting abilities. Wolfgang is also one of her biggest supporters and says, “Ms. Reed is a prime example of a fitness-minded, healthy student who personifies everything good about physical fitness at FVTC.” Morgan’s favorite thing to do in the gym is running and leg day because she likes to push herself and feel the struggle. Afterwards Morgan says she feels like she is on top of that world and it’s her favorite feeling. She doesn’t just stay fit in the gym, just in the last 6 months Morgan is completed 7 5K runs, 2 10K runs, 1 Half Marathon, is registered for her 2nd, and summited 13,000ft of Ajax Peak in CO by herself! Her healthy lifestyle has also sparked a new passion for being a Personal Trainer and is working on her certification through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). -Congrats on all your accomplishments Morgan!!!! PAS Ag Power

FVTC Food Pantry

Each year the PAS Ag Power club creates a Plan of Action that includes fundraising, fun trips, and community service. It was clear that we wanted to help others that are in need by donating essentials to the less fortunate. Our advisors approached us with a flyer, from the FVTC Pantry, that listed items the pantry desperately needed. We agreed that if every member in the club could bring at least one item it might help. The results were so much better than we could have hoped because our 14 members collected over 100 items!! We are proud that the members participated in a huge way to help our fellow student’s right here on campus. facebook.com/fvtcfoxtimes

Losing Weight

in College Katie Pederson & Jonathon Iwanski Losing weight can be one of the biggest life decisions that a student can make, especially in college. Where does someone start when they want to begin the journey of losing extra weight? A person can lose weight and feel amazing about himself or herself by eating healthy, exercising, and making basic lifestyle changes. One way to lose weight is to eat healthy. We have all heard of the “Freshman Fifteen”. The “Freshman Fifteen” is often described as when college students go away from family, and put on extra weight. According to “What’s Behind First-Year Weight Gain?”, college freshmen can gain an extra 15 pounds during college because they are away from family and also eat more when they are stressed or bored (Beating the Freshman 15). Studies have shown that the high concentrated water found in fruits and vegetables can help someone lose weight. In the study “7 Foods That Help You Shed Pounds”, researchers from the University of Tokyo did a study on women eating high water content foods (7 Foods That Help You Shed Pounds). The researchers discovered that the women ended up with smaller waistlines and had lower body mass indexes. Researchers also claim that eating foods that have water in them may possibly help someone stay filled up so he or she is not as hungry often. Fruits and vegetables that have about 90% water in them added to meals will help someone lose weight efficiently and make good healthy habits to be strong and fit. Another good way to lose weight in college is to exercise. One can do so by joining a fitness center

26

FVTC Student Publication | January | February | 2017

or gym. Most universities and colleges have fitness centers or gyms for students to join and start living healthy. In order to get into the fitness center at Fox Valley Technical College one must obtain a key-fob. After they have the key-fob, they can schedule for a free one hour orientation. After the orientation, students/staff begin a personalized workout. On Fox Valley Technical College’s website, the Fitness Center offers great services for everyone including nutrition consultations, personal training sessions, wellness checks, and fitness assessments (Fitness Center). Along with great services that are offered at the fitness center for free, one can also sign up for a variety of free group exercise classes. Some classes offered are yoga, fitness walking, Zumba, and cardio/ strength circuit. Michigan State University did research and found a link between both exercise and an increase of GPAs by college students. The research done at Michigan State University stated that college freshmen and sophomore students that were members of fitness centers and sports received higher GPAs. The study proved that students who had memberships at the fitness center decreased the dropout rate of school. There was a 3.5% increase of members attending the fitness centers and gyms. James Pivamik, a professor of kinesiology and epidemiology at Michigan State University, said “These results provide a compelling argument to universities that a higher student retention rate could be enhanced just by having adequate recreational and fitness facilities for students.” (Bushak, Lecia) Basic lifestyle changes are important to have in mind when a student is trying to lose weight. These include healthy habits, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress. Finding an accountability partner can also motivate someone to go to the gym. Dominican University in California’s Psychology professor, Dr. Gail Matthews, conducted a goal achievement study. Results showed that goals that were written down, shared with a friend, and sent weekly goal updates to their friend were 33% more successful in accomplishing their goals due to the motivation from their accountability partner. Another basic lifestyle change is taking the stairs instead of using the

Sleep can also play an important factor in losing weight in college. According to “6 ways Sleep Can Help You Lose Weight”, research done at the University of Chicago’s General Clinical Resource Center looked at weight loss results from 8 Yi hours slept per night versus 5 Yi hours per night. The people who slept for the 8 Yi hours lost more fat because they were more well-rested compared to the people who slept for 5 Yi hours. The study showed more fat loss in the more rested people even though both groups ate the same number of calories and lost about the same amount of weight. According to the article, “Sleep Loss Limits Fat Loss, Study Finds” both groups lost about 6 Yz pounds. With the people who slept for 8 Yz hours, they lost just over three pounds from fat and 3.3 pounds from protein fat free body mass. (Sleep Loss Limits Fat Loss, Study Finds) Stress reduction can also play a big role in weight loss in college. According to “7 Ways To Beat Stress Fat” Shawn Talbott, author and PhD, conducted a study and found that by doing push-ups stress is relieved when someone moves their muscles. Another effective way to lose stress is by walking. Talbott found out that by walking three times a week for a total of 18 minutes, stress can quickly lower the hormone levels by up to 15%. If doing push-ups is not working out, another alternate way to relieve stress is by flexing the hands and calf muscles to help move cortisol. Finding a stress reliever can help you reach your weight loss goal.

to me, I set a goal to lose between 10-20 pounds by May 2017. Two weeks after college started, I met with the Wellness Coordinator, Patti Martin, and decided to go to the fitness center at least twice a week. I began a basic workout and about a month later, I started a second personalized workout. I have proven to myself, my family, and friends, that I can lose weight by making it a priority to go to the fitness center twice a week.

Clubs

elevator or escalator. According to “Health benefits of stair climbing”, seven minutes of stair climbing a day can decrease the risk of having a heart attack for over ten years. Also, two extra minutes of stair climbing per day is enough to stop weight gain in the average middle age group. The average early mortality risk can be lowered by over 33% just by climbing eight flights of stairs per day.

Since going to the fitness center, I started to see some weight loss and I look forward to seeing more progress toward my goal. A person can lose weight and feel amazing about himself or herself by eating healthy, exercising, and making basic lifestyle changes.

In conclusion, weight loss is a struggle for many adults, but can be an especially challenge for students beginning college. Living with my parents in Michigan until starting classes at Fox Valley Technical College this past Fall, I became concerned about the “Freshmen Fifteen”.
