Fox Times Updates Oh, do we have news for you! We decided to change up the Fox Times since we love you all so much! One thing you may have noticed was the new logo design of the fox times by our very own Allison Hartter. Thank you very much Allison! Another thing we have added were feature pages. These can be found in color and in the very center of the issue. If we like your submission, it may be placed in the feature section and mentioned on the cover! And last but not least, we brought back fierce foxy. Foxy got a new makeover and wanted to be engaged in campus again. In the previous issue, we asked you to email us questions for foxy to answer. Hope you enjoy the new changes we have made and we will see you in the next issue! Sincerly, Fox Times Staff 4

Ask Fierce Foxy
?
Here’s Some questions Foxy answered!
Why are you called Fierce foxy now?
Have you seen me? I’m looking more fierce than sly recently.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book at the moment has to be The Wicked King by Holly Black. Can you do my homework for me?
But if I did it, how would you know what to do for the test?
My friend refuses to accept that my theory on ‘why the earth is flat’ is right. What can I say or do to get him on my side?
Intresting question. Well, to prove the earth is flat to someone, just take them to the edge of the world.

FVTC’S Hmong Student Union Would like to Say, Congratulations, and Take a Breather By: Thong Xiong - President
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”
Congratulations and celebrations, to all the Graduates, and to all foxes! We made it through, yet another successful semester. Hmong Student Union would like to congratulate all our graduates for taking an enormous stride towards the future, your future. You are what you believe you can be, and no one can tell you “no” except yourself. Take pride in your accomplishment, your knowledge, and - Pele above all yourself. You made this happen, with a little push here and there from your teachers and peers, you have accomplished your goal. Whether it be long term or short term, it is a step in the right direction. No one can take this away from you, so stand tall with your chest out and your head held high, because you are a graduate of Fox Valley Technical College. To all foxes, that are taking finals, we would like to say, good luck! The semester is coming to an end, and the light at the end of this semester’s tunnel is piercing through. Continue to do what you have been doing, and don’t falter under the pressure, but remember as well that a warm light in cold times can render the strongest of all people weak. Use the light at the end of the tunnel as motivation to achieve that A in your core classes and general education courses. It is at this very crucial time that we must support each other as a united front. Tell your peers good luck, let them know they are not in this battle alone. Find hope in your peers and your family, and above all, be that hope for others. At Fox Valley Technical College, we are not an individual or a mere pawn in a chess game, but a family. Even though foxes live in families, they hunt in solitude, we are foxes, a family that lives under one roof but our goals and dreams are individualistic. Continue to strive to be the best that you can be, and obtain that degree or certificate you have been hunting for. As the semester ends, and we go home to our family, take this time to breathe. Take it all in, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Life is what you make out of it, go out and have some fun, because we all know we deserve it. Take care of your family, and take care of yourself and as the roman poet, Horace, would say, Carpe Diem, Seize the day! Hmong Student Union would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Look forward to more of our events in the coming months, from our Noodle Mic Night, to our Tournament on the Fox, we will see you next semester foxes. Hunt the good Hunt, and stay sly.

A Wiccan’s Holiday: Imbolc By Kyrin Kuhn Imbolc (sometimes known as Candlemas) is typically celebrated in the beginning of February. For 2019, Imbolc starts at sundown on February 1st and ends on the night of February 2nd. Imbolc is a symbol of renewal, clearing the old to replace with the new, and celebrating the sun’s rebirth from the cold winters. Some ways Wiccan’s celebrate Imbolc is by lighting candles in every room of the house during sundown to honor the rebirth of the sun. Some may go hiking through the snow and look for signs of life as a sign of the upcoming spring. For some Wiccan’s, Imbolc is a time for initiation into covens (if they so choose) and weather divination. Some Wiccan’s also honor the goddess Brigid who is known as the fire goddess. She is associated with healing, marriage, fertility, mothers, and children, and to some is seen as a “woman’s holiday”. Some customs would include doing a divination ritual to prepare for the weather to come. An Imbolc Recipe from Wicca.com: Returning Sun Spice Bread
1 1/4 cup flour 1/8 cup poppyseeds 2 tsp. baking powder 3/4 cup raisins, plain or golden 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup butter/margarine 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 3/4 cup Karo golden corn syrup 1/2 cup light brown sugar 4 tbs. milk 1 large egg, beaten 1 tsp. mixed spices** **Equal parts of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
Sift the flour, soda, and baking powder into a non-metal bowl. Add the mixed spice and ginger. Next add the brown sugar and raisins. Mix. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and the syrup over a low heat, then pour liquid into the well in the middle of the flour mixture. Add the beaten egg and the milk then mix very well. Pour into a well-greased 2-lb loaf pan and bake in a preheated oven at 325 degrees for 40-50 minutes. This bread can be made the night before as it improves with age. Makes 8-10 servings.

How to Survive 2019 Edition
Join a club or organization at school. I hear the Fox Times is always looking for a cool, new member. Why not? You have nothing to lose. Stay hydrated. If you drink enough water, you will spend most of your time peeing and won’t have time for everyone’s drama Schedule time to study. Time management is key to success… but don’t forget to schedule fun time too. Keep a fresh container of kitty litter in your car. Kitty litter works great to add traction if your car gets stuck. Also, will come in handy if you are traveling with a cat. Learn to play an instrument – jazz music specifically. The roaring 20’s is only a year away. Time to prepare. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT! Post your political opinions on your social media. It’s better for everyone that way. Put away your Christmas decorations. Christmas is over, your tree shouldn’t still be up in February. This isn’t a matter of opinion, it’s fact. Make time to take care of yourself. No one’s going to do it for you, so eat healthy, get some exercise, and floss your teeth! Get to school early – that’s when all the good parking spots are available. If you’re super smart, leave your car in said spot and take the bus home. Awesome parking spot all semester. Drink lots of coffee. The reason? Because coffee is amazing, and you will be too if you drink it.

NKBA
Student Chapter
In November, we had the opportunity to attend the 2018 NKBA WI/UP Chapter Annual Awards Celebration in Kohler, WI. This was an awesome opportunity for all of us to network with industry professionals and see the Kohler operation. To start our day, we got to hang out with the gala’s MC – a HGTV Design Star winner- Jennifer Bertrand! We had a lovely lunch and Q and A with her at the Craverie Chocolatier Café. Jennifer’s energy is so contagious! She shared her journey with us, answered our questions, and followed each one of us on Instagram! *Swoon!* After our lunch with Jennifer, we headed over to the luxury tile showroom of Ann Sacks. We had the opportunity to browse some of the most gorgeous tiles available and ask any questions we had. Then we were off to our next adventure – a VIP tour at Kohler of the waste lab and some behind the scenes of new Kohler products! What an awesome opportunity! Once we completed our tour, we rushed to our rooms to get ready for the gala! We quickly got dolled up and headed over to the Kohler Design Center for the celebration. The Design Center was BEAUTIFUL! There were amazing food stations throughout the displays, and plenty of time to mingle and meet professionals from all over the state and UP. The end of the night was the award ceremony for the professional design competition. Guess what? A FVTC alumni, Olivia Krohn, took 1st place in Residential Kitchen Design $60k-$100K! Way to go, Olivia!

5 Tips to Start the Semester Right By Rob Wilson
With winter break coming to an end, unlike the cold weather, and spring semester upon us, here are some tips to help you succeed. Make a List Have a lot going on during the week, or even during the day? Making a list ahead of time to plan your time can do wonders for success. During the first semester when things got busy, I would make a list of all assignments and outside obligations for the next few days. This ensured that I had enough time to complete everything and I was not stressing to get it all done last second. It is also satisfying to cross off items on the list when completed. It might not seem like much, but it can help with motivation.
Take Breaks Pacing yourself on large assignments instead of doing it all in one sitting can be a good strategy to avoid overworking yourself. By splitting it into smaller, more manageable parts, you can increase your quality of work. The downside is, if you take too many breaks, you risk losing your workflow.
Get Plenty of Sleep Staying up late to complete assignments occasionally is alright, but when it becomes a recurring habit you’ll be left exhausted. While the ideal amount of sleep depends on various factors like age, 7 hours is a great start for most adults according to the Sleep Foundation. Being well rested makes you more productive. You’ll have an easier time retaining information from class, focusing on work, and in the end, having more time for yourself and less stress.

5 Tips to Start the Semester Right By Rob Wilson
Procrastinate Wisely Let’s be honest. Most of us, including me, procrastinate a lot. Heck, I sat on this article for weeks over the break. However, if you’re reading this, it made the cut. The ability to jump straight into an assignment is useful. But what happens if you wait? I’m not saying to put it off to the last minute necessarily but giving yourself extra time to think might help you come up with a perspective you haven’t thought of before. Use this tip wisely for the more creative projects.
Take Only What You Can Handle Balancing school with life can be a struggle. With all the responsibilities we have these days, it is easy to get overwhelmed. One thing to be mindful of is your class load. Cramming a bunch of classes in might seem good on paper but can quickly turn into wasted time, and money if things go south. Everyone has a unique situation, so speaking with an advisor can help determine how many classes you should take. In the end, your stress levels, grades, and wallet will thank you.
I hope someone out there finds these tips helpful and I wish everyone a great Spring 2019 semester!
