How To

De-Stress

With S.T.R.E.S.S. E: Eat

A schedule must have breaks for nourishment. Keep a healthy diet to maintain the energy to make it through the day. Stress can be worse if our minds aren’t receiving the necessary nutrients and sleep.

It has come to that time of the semester. Midterm tests and projects are coming due. Many students fear the worst and deal with a boat load of stress. Stress slithers its way into every nook and cranny of a student’s life, but there is a practical solution. All students can de-stress with the S.T.R.E.S.S. strategy.

S: Sit down

First, sit down and think about possible plans that will work with class work and extracurricular activities. Creating a doable action plan will help lessen any stress that may stir up as due dates get closer.

T: Time Management

Even outside midterm season, time management can be the difference between succeeding and failing. Begin by following a schedule to help balance school work and extracurricular activities. Continue by creating a sleep schedule. Then, figure out how much time is available for studying and homework.

R: Rest

Schedules will need to have an allotted time for rest. Sleeping helps keep our bodies and minds healthy. Before tests and projects, make sure to have enough sleep to make it through the day.

S: Start

Start making the necessary changes to make it through midterm season. Prepare for the unexpected changes and an increased work load. The hardest part is to start. Once the first step is handled, the process will flow efficiently if the schedule is followed.

S: Smart

Be smart about the decisions being made in midterm season. Overworking the mind and the body can set anyone back. Think about realistic solutions to a time crunch that works with a schedule. Take the necessary steps to be successful in midterm season by learning from past mistakes and finding new solutions. So, will you survive this semester’s midterm season? What are some of your solution to fight against stress? Hans Selye said it right when he said, “Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress to a positive one.” Stress should never control a person. Use the S.T.R.E.S.S. strategy to find ways to de-stress before the big day.

Another year has begun for Phi Theta K appa members. Although we are not even half

way through the first semester, we have already accomplished some tasks at hand. From assisting the VA Club this summer for the EAA Brat Fry to being involved in the Drive In, Open House, and our annual monthly bake sales; we have so much in store that we are looking forward to sharing with the students and staff here at FVTC, as well as out in our community. Second- we would like to welcome Kamila Askarova as our new Public Relations Officerwe look forward to having you work alongside us on our many great adventures this year! We still have more officer positions open, so if you are interested in joining a team that is full of leadership, fellowship, education and fun- please e-mail the chapter president Melissa at-melissa.groeschel88@ gmail.com Some of the events on our upcoming agenda areInduction on October 19th, where we have a little over sixty new members being inducted. During induction, our members have their first opportunity to give back to the community. This semester, members are being asked to bring in items that will be donated to the Fox Valley Humane Association.

We wanted to be able to assist those affected by the hurricanes down south. Fox Valley Humane Association is one of the two shelters in the Fox Valley area that has brought the overflow of sheltered animals up to Wisconsin, so those pets that were misplaced from their homes during the hurricanes could be put into the shelters until their families had found them. We have many things in the near future- November 15th , from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. we are holding a CHAIRity and silent auction in the Appleton Commons, as well as our monthly bake sale in which we will be collaborating with the AA&P club (Addiction Awareness & Prevention). We have also been working on our Honor’s in Action (HiA) project as well as getting ready to work with the college administration for this year’s College Project, in which we have chosen to continue to work with the Promise Foundation, and it’s 2017/2018 incoming students as well as prospecting students. Members- please remember to keep an eye out for your announcements listed on Blackboard for upcoming events and volunteer opportunities! And to all the new members that we will be inducting this semester- Welcome to Phi Theta Kappa- Beta Epsilon Omicron Chapter! We hope to see your smiling faces on campus and hopefully at our upcoming events!

A Time

Paradox Yolanda Fordham

I remember watching the Batman movie when I was young. I mean the original movie;

the one in which Batman was played by The Founder’s Michael Keaton, you know back when movies had plots, substance, and acting actually worthy of Academy Award nominations. Midway through the movie there is a scene where Bruce Wayne is sharing an intimate moment with Kim Basinger’s Vicki Vale. Suddenly they are confronted by Jack Nicholson’s Joker. Instantly Joker’s goons are met with excessive resistance and scuffle with Bruce Wayne during their broad daylight attempt to kidnap Vicki Vale. Joker watches with intrigue as his lackeys finally manage to restrain and subdue Mr. Wayne. The tension is palpable as Joker approaches Wayne while menacingly swaying the revolver in his hand from side to side. Sneering with his pale-faced, sadistic, ear to ear grin he asks, “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?” As Bruce tries to wrap his mind around the question, Joker explains that he himself doesn’t understand what the phrase means but likes the sound of it. Then —BOOM! Joker fires a round that sends Wayne flying halfway across the room and leaves him sprawled on his back. In retrospect, it seems that life often plays out like that Batman scene: intimate moments of tranquility suddenly interrupted by hails of gunfire from life’s revolver. The day began like any other, my brother arguing in obnoxiously loud tones with his girlfriend and me blocking out the deafening noise with Newport cigarette smoke while drowning my liver in swimming pools of leftover Hennessey from the night before. Meanwhile, the fragrance from my boyfriend’s “special medicine” wafted through the

8

FVTC Student Publication | November | 2017

hallways while he and his friends rapped over instrumentals in his homemade recording studio in his rabbit hole of a room. With all this excitement going on it was hard to notice my other two brothers arguing in the room next to me over who owed who money from whatever videogame they had been up all night playing. Visitors who came by often called it chaos. We called it home. Surprisingly enough I had run out of cigarettes late in the afternoon. The rays of sunshine that colored the sky earlier that morning had since been hidden by clouds but the humidity had decided torturing me was better than dissipating so I decided that driving was the go-to option of the day. I returned to the driveway and backyard filled with sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews reminding me of what it was like to run around carefree and not have to worry about bills. They chased each other like only pretend cops and robbers could do in weather like this. The hungover party animal in me wanted to walk carelessly past them and into my air-conditioned house where my lazy-boy and Terri Woods novel were waiting for me, but instead the concerned mother in me yelled, “Stop playing with them sticks ‘fore one of y’all gets hurt.” Up until then the whole day felt like a dream but I hadn’t noticed yet. The wind was blowing smoothly through the trees causing a nice breeze to enter in through my car window just when I

needed it. Watching the cars travel east and west on the road in front of our home, something felt oddly out of place; a tad askew. Is there something out of place or is it just me? I asked myself. My pondering was instantly interrupted by the sound of my two-year-old toddler, Shawmar, crying. I immediately rushed out of the car to discover my sons’ eye covered in blood. Upon further investigation of his face I recognized the ugly slash on his eye. I ran inside with him and told his father what had happened and he instantly erupted with rage. He began yelling at my older son, Christale, who ran away in fear. I yelled to my son to jump the fence so we could get to the hospital which was a block away if we cut through the neighbor’s house. There, my son was stitched up and we headed home. I would have thought that was a good scare for the day and my feeling of being in a dream was over with. However, that was only the beginning. We took the long way home. The clouds had disappeared and the sun was shining bright again. Christale kept apologizing. I told him it was ok, it was an accident. We were almost home when Shawmar started whining. He wanted to get down and walk with his brother. I put him down and he walked over to his brother and grabbed his hand. They began walking ahead of me. They were engaged in a conversation but the cars driving by drowned out the sounds. I looked at my boys and was glad to see them so bonded even after an accident. At that moment I didn’t know that would be the last conversation they would ever have. We got home and I laid Shawmar down in his dad’s room. I left to go to Wal-Mart with a friend. As I was pulling off, Christale came outside and asked if he could go. I told him, no, that I would be right back. About thirty minutes later while I was at Wal-Mart, I got a phone call saying my son tried to kill himself and that the ambulance and police were at the house. My heart was pounding. The store seem like it was spinning. I could no longer understand what was being said on the phone. I don’t remember leaving the store. I remember speeding down Calumet going between cars.

I was a block away when I saw all the lights and emergency vehicles. There was nowhere for me to go so I put the car in park, jumped out of the car and ran towards the house. I was close enough to see my son’s body lying on the grass. I tried to go towards him but the officer stopped me. My older brother’s girlfriend grabbed me. I pulled away and ran into the house. I needed to stay focused and my anxiety was through the roof so I needed an anxiety pill. I popped a few pills and returned outside watching as they tried to resuscitate my son lifeless body. They put him in the ambulance. I said, “I am riding.” I got in the ambulance and was holding his hand while the paramedic continued to work on trying to get a heartbeat. I remember looking at him. There was no life. I knew then my baby was no longer here. He was gone. I prayed, I prayed hard that day, asking God to save him if it was His will. If it was his time, then to please give me strength. At the hospital they continued to try to bring him back. I was standing outside the room and had a clear view: Flat line, no heart rhythm, and no sign of life. After fortyfive minutes, the doctor finally called it. He was officially pronounced dead. I was devastated. I was experiencing a mother’s worst moment. I became numb. That day changed my life forever. At first, I turned to prescription drugs, alcohol, and weed to avoid the pain I was feeling. I was stressed and depressed. I would wake up and go through my day like the walking dead. My son had hung himself and I felt like I was dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight. There is not a day I don’t think about losing my son. However, that traumatic event in my life helped me to get my life on a positive track. I turned to Christ for strength and found grace. Through His word I was able to change my life, go back to school and do things I may have never done, i.e. go on a trip to Ireland. If it were not for that moment, that my life was interrupted by life’s revolver, I would not be where I am today. It still hurts but I am no longer dancing with the devil in a spiral dance to hell, instead I am living life drug- and alcohol-free, and dancing with my Savior to a very fulfilling life. facebook.com/fvtcfoxtimes

Story by Erin Bates

Part 5

How’s life treating you?”

About a week after Prudence’s burial, I decided to get out of Zombie world for time. After all, I still had a reputation to hold up and a job to do as a writer. Besides, I was still “under contract.”

I chuckled thinking, ‘You have no idea. I moved to a town filled with zombies and I got turned into one, then I looked after a couple of zombie kids a couple of times.’

Although Agatha was clearly not in the mood to see me, we made arrangements to meet in her office to go over what was my first draft for my novel. In spite of it, I did toss something in for Agatha’s taste. She wanted a romance novel, she was going to get a monster romance novel.

“Not much. Moved to a new town and have been working on my new book.”

The Princeton Publishing company was an old warehouse that had been modified to be accommodating office spaces. Outside, the pale blue paint was peeling slightly off, causing chips to fall into the grass that hugged the building. Even though there were two potted variegated red-twig dogwoods by the entry way, the best sight was the creeping fig that climbed from the grass up towards the roof.

“Not particularly. I heard a lot of stories about the place, but they’re probably nothing more than rumors set to spark writers’ or movie directors’ inspiration. Zombies… there’s no such thing.”

Inside, gray concrete floors were covered by multipatterned rugs, some with bold designs while others were more extravagant. I walked towards the reception desk and smiled at Brenda, one of the few tolerable people that worked for Agatha. “Hi Brenda.” “Hello Ebony! I haven’t seen you for a few weeks!

16

FVTC Student Publication | November | 2017

“I heard,” Brenda smirked, “Agatha threw quite a fit when she heard you were moving to Everly.” “You’ve been there?”

I wanted to tell her how wrong she was, but it would break the trust I had just established in the town. After all, they wouldn’t take too kindly to have a mob of news reporters come stomping into town to get a story… or worse. “Speaking of which,” I smiled, “I’m here to see Agatha. I just finished my Zombie romance novel that I’m hoping to get published.” Brenda started laughing, “That’ll rile her up! After all, we need a few more of those kinds of novels instead of the gory, killing novels.” “Especially since most of those novels are about

mobs of mindless zombies.” We chuckled and Brenda pointed the way to Agatha’s office. As she led the way, I couldn’t help but ask, “What kinds of books do you prefer?” “Huh? Oh! Hmm...” Brenda tapped at her chin in rhythm with her heels, “I’ve always enjoyed a good action novel with an undertone of mystery. Grew up on Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and the Sherlock Holmes novels. Why?” “Looking for inspiration for another book if this one turns out,” I answered. “Well, you have my word on this, if your book is published, I’ll read it!” “Hopefully not as a need…” “Nope, just to agitate Agathe Du Mortes!” *** Even though the building was the size of an old warehouse, Agatha’s office space was larger than the reception area. It was probably about 17 feet by 17 feet with walls the color of pale rose pink. A few pictures hanging here and there, some of her and who I think might’ve been Agatha’s husband and others of paintings. Agatha was sitting at her 30 inches by 60 inches by 28-inch desk in a dark cherry color, looking over a few of the novel’s pages, humming lightly to herself. As I admired the artwork, I couldn’t help but wonder if she had kids of her own… “Well, Ebony, this is quite a captivating story,” Agatha remarked, “I see you did take my suggestion for adding a little bit of romance, so that’ll help boost its sales…”

Rebirth has something for everyone, some gore, some love, some comedy…” “And that’s what you intend to call this book? Rebirth?” I smiled, “Indeed. I think this novel could teach a lesson in fear too… if we let ourselves be consumed by it, it will cause an all-out war upon the world.” Agatha was quiet, as if contemplating the entire thing. She nodded and smiled, instantly looking younger than when I first met her, “I’ll read it and email you if I think this is worth publishing.” *** On the way back into Everly, I stopped at a little corner store and purchased some of Ma Frank’s bakery as a celebratory treat for myself. No doubt that I love Chuck’s wife’s cookies, but sometimes I feel I need to remind myself that I’m still a human at heart, and I didn’t need a few cupcakes with pieces of brains hidden within the batter. By the time I returned home, Victoria was waiting for me on the front steps of the building. The worry on her face was clearly evident. I couldn’t help but wonder what happened. Parking, I grabbed my purse and box of cupcakes before heading for the door. “Are you ok Victoria? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” “Well, there is a guest here to see you… one that showed up unexpectedly.” Good grief… please tell it’s not who I think it is… A friendly voice called from the lounge, “Sis! Is that you?”

I smiled, knowing what makes a publisher happy is what keeps the writer from going insane. “I still don’t know about this zombie idea though… are you sure you want to do a zombie love story?” “Agatha, I may not be the best with zombies, considering that I live in a town rumored to have them, but most people these days are into those monsters, no matter how disgusting or gory. Besides, facebook.com/fvtcfoxtimes

Greetings fellow students! How many among you actually take the time to ensure your computer is up to date with all the latest security updates? What about your firewall? Your antivirus? Your anti-malware software? Do you even have these programs installed? Do you know what they even are?

TECH

It’s okay to say no. Most typical users either don’t know what a firewall is or don’t see a need for it. Many people don’t have software designed to combat malware on their machine. For several years, Windows has provided built-in firewall and anti-malware software and they have become sufficient for the average user (to be fair, there is no universal solution to preventing viruses and unwanted intrusions into your system). Without going into too much detail, a firewall is basically software that monitors internet activity on your computer and attempts to detect and block unrecognized or suspicious connections to your machine. For most of us, just having a standard firewall is enough. Unfortunately, there are still many users that do not have their Windows firewall enabled, leaving themselves more susceptible to an attack. Anti-malware software works in a similar way to anti-virus software, so much so in fact that many people lump viruses and malware into the same category even though they are technically different. Malware as a general term covers many different problem programs, but can come in the form of programs designed to capture your keystrokes, (Do you do online banking? Yeah, those keystrokes too) background processes that install what are called rootkits on your machine, (Rootkits are exceptionally hard to detect and remove. In most cases, your hard drive needs to be reformatted. Say goodbye to any data you haven’t backed up) and even programs

20

that can hijack your computer until you pay the attackers a fee. (These are known as ransomware, and unsuspecting users may actually pay the fines, which can be anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars!) Some readers may be aware of a recent major data breach involving the credit bureau Equifax. For those who haven’t heard or haven’t followed the news, here’s the gist of it. Equifax is one of three consumer credit reporting agencies that monitors and tracks financial data on anyone with a credit history, including businesses. They have data on over 800 million individual people and 88 million businesses worldwide according to Wikipedia. Recently, they experienced a data breach and the personal information including social security numbers, drivers licenses, and other data of millions of people were exposed to thieves.

that Windows provides are up and running, but a simple google search will yield easy to follow instructions for 90% of users. Try googling “turn on windows firewall” and “turn on windows defender.” Search for those phrases without the quotes. Anti-virus software will be a bit more in-depth. In the next issue of Fox Times Tech, I will go into some of the different free options available to standard users to ensure their computers remain virus free, and we may also touch on some backup solutions so that even if your system gets hijacked or infected, you won’t lose everything. The first issue of this column only just went to print, so I have not had any e-mails just yet. I welcome any of you who may have questions about anything tech to e-mail me at foxtimestech@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to answer them! Until next time my friends!

Looking past the fact that it wasn’t properly addressed for weeks, and the fact that they could have prevented it but literally chose not to apply the necessary fix, and that the official website that Equifax tweeted out for consumers to check and see if their data was compromised was in fact compromised itself, we now have the issue of the primary means of identity thieves, people’s social security numbers, being in the wild. This sort of attack is becoming more and more common. In the current state of technology in the world, it’s more important now than ever before to ensure you are taking the necessary safeguards to protect yourself and your digital property. It’s scary to think that your computer that you paid hundreds if not thousands for could be hijacked, and all of your data stolen. Fortunately, there are simple steps we can take to protect ourselves in a way that is sufficient for the average user. It’s hard to give step-by-step directions on how to ensure your firewall is on and your anti-malware facebook.com/fvtcfoxtimes

Yard Game Night!

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and the Fitness Center offers a big “Thank You! to all who attended our Yard Game Night on October 2nd. We were blessed to have a warm, sunny day for play and enough breeze to keep the Ultimate Frisbee and Flag Football players cool! Approximately 34 students came together to play Ultimate Frisbee, Flag Football, Jenga, Connect Four, Washers, Bags, Ladderball, and Kerplunk. Everyone enjoyed playing together and meeting new people! We had so much fun that we will try to make this event happen again in Spring 2018 (so keep watch for that once we have the spring thaw)!

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS at Fox Cities 5K On Saturday, September 23, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Fox Cities 5K with a few other police recruits. Our

assignment was to stand at our assigned intersections to direct any potential traffic and cheer on the participants. After the final walker passed our respective posts, we were supposed to turn in our traffic vests and be on our way. However, the last participant was a Vietnam vet named Charlie, and my two fellow police recruits and I decided to walk with him for the final two miles. Charlie was a door gunner in the Coast Guard. As we walked, we talked about his time in Vietnam, the good and the bad. Charlie also told us about the moving experience he had this year on an Honor Flight with some fellow veterans.. The heat on this warm September afternoon promoted Charlie to discuss playing football in high school

and college, recalling how, even in high temperatures they would still practice twice a day and reflecting upon the fact that in the 1950s, their pads did not provide much relief. It seemed Charlie knew something about every conceivable topic: We talked about waterski teams in the state, the old ship building industry in Marinette, specials he was watching on public TV, just to touch on a few. Charlie told us he lives up-north now, and though he would like to, he hasn’t gotten out fishing much lately. Instead, it seems he’s been spending his free time walking 5ks. He shared that he has participated in various walking events, and I even saw a photo of him walking part of the Fox Cities Marathon..

FVTC Student Publication | November | 2017

Charlie’s final time was 1 hour and 41 minutes. I’m not sure when we started walking with Charlie, but I know we all felt we could have continued walking and talking with him for hours. As we crossed the finish line our pictures were taken, and Charlie even received a medal that was placed around his neck. He said the people running the event knew about him and treated him very well, even though he wasn’t sure how he felt about the extra attention. As we parted ways, I reflected upon how lucky I was to have made the friend in Charlie that I did, and I was glad to have had the opportunity because of my experience volunteering that afternoon.

Funker

Jim could hear the sounds of the waves

lapping softly against the aluminum hull of his boat, occasional clapping sounds

coupled with the cold vibration of metal in water. It was a sound not unfamiliar to him.

The old boat was his mainstay and although small and beaten up, it was his most prized possession. For six decades he had fished from that boat, having inherited it from his father when he died, and the thing seemed unsinkable. It was him and his dad’s “thing”, their bonding experience. His father had been a standup guy and Jim cherished every moment he got to fish with the old man and learn his secrets for catching the big ones. In the distance the sound of a splash came to him, causing him to look over and see only the ripples of a fish that had decided to breach the surface. Once again his mind wandered back to that day when he was just a boy as it often did when he noticed a fish jump. Ever since then he had insisted he had seen it, to the skeptics and non-believers. He glanced back at his bobber and it still floated lazily and undisturbed on the surface of the water. It always irked him when he thought about how many times he had fished in this spot, at this time of day and year, and he mostly caught naps more than anything else since that day. If you asked him, well you need at least a half hour to hear the tale. He always prefaced the story by saying the same exact thing, “Some of this may sound exaggerated, but I swear it’s all true.” A boy of 13 at the time, he had taken his dad’s fancy new aluminum boat out on the lake all by himself. He

30

had swelled with pride when his dad had granted him permission to go alone, and no boy had ever paid more attention to anything than he had while driving that boat. “Remember, minor corrections in heading, figure-8 the anchor cleat, and be home before the sun settles below the horizon,” his dad told him. Jim quickly agreed to the terms. He didn’t want to waste any more time than was necessary. Having never been in the boat alone before, he wasn’t even sure where on the small lake to go, and had settled on anchoring near a small natural island around a bend from his parent’s cottage. “Out of sight, out of mind,” he thought, a sly grin breaking out on his face. He could barely contain his excitement. He dropped anchor and as the rope slid through his hands, his palms were burned slightly and it made a plunging sound as it broke the surface. “You’ll scare all the fish before we even get a line wet!” his father would have declared. “We’ll just see about that,” thought Jim. With the anchor on the bottom, he tied the line off on a cleat with a square knot. Once in place, he anxiously went about the task of preparing to fish. He was so excited that his hands trembled and he nearly dropped his pole in the bottom of the boat, cursing as he saved it from the loud metal CLANG! that inevitably would have followed. After several attempts to tie a good fisherman’s

knot, he was finally able to tie a hook onto his line. He set the depth, weighted the line and attached his bobber, and casted off the side of the boat staring intently at it as if making sure it didn’t disappear into thin air. Almost immediately he got a bite. He reeled in the slack, set the hook, and retrieved a Perch that was about 4 inches long. “Too small..,” he thought, removing the hook and tossing the fish back. Over the course of what felt to him like hours, he continued to catch Perch about that size. Finally, his frustration with all the small fish hit its peak around the time the bottom of the sun had reached the tops of the trees. That was the designated “get ready to come home” time his dad had set for him, and he saw it with dismay. Just as he was pulling in his final cast of the day, he felt the tap, tap, tap of yet another small Perch on his line. Sure enough, he pulled it up and grumbled sourly as he removed it from his hook. As he prepared to toss the fish back, it slipped out of his hands and landed in his tackle box. He cursed under his breath, his teenage angst in full force now. He reached inside and his hand found an old bobber that had been in his box forever. His dad had always called it the Barrel, and for good reason. The bobber was enormous, about 3 inches in diameter. It was a red and white sphere and was surprisingly not very badly beat up. His father had told him a story about that bobber once. Years ago, when his father had been a boy himself, his father had used that bobber one time. Due to its size, it was so buoyant that only the largest of fish could pull it under. Jim’s father’s father had used some small panfish as bait and casted the Barrel out on the very lake Jim fished now. Both watched then, waiting for the monster fish they each hoped would take the bait.

turns elsewhere. It happens to everyone, and Jim’s father and grandfather had been no different. After being in the water for what felt like forever, they had both turned their attention to other things. Finally Jim’s father had looked and exclaimed, “Dad! The big bobber is gone!” Jim’s grandfather moving with a speed his father didn’t think was possible, had grabbed the pole and set the hook. The line snapped immediately, and the only thing left on the line was the Barrel. They had looked at each other then, Jim’s father and his father, and as if they had rehearsed it they both whispered to each other at once, “Lunker…”. Jim had always been skeptical of that story, but his father had been adamant about it. Like any good fishing story, Jim thought it must have been embellished and exaggerated to such an extent that nearly all of it had been made up. About the only thing Jim truly believed about the story was the Barrel was the actual bobber they had used that day. Grasping the legendary bobber, he barely registered the sounds of the Perch in his tackle box flipping back and forth and basically burying itself more in the process. An idea came to him then. He glanced back up at the sun, studying the distance between it and the horizon in a calculated manner. “I have time,” he thought…

Trans Awareness Trans Flag Facts: • “78% of transgender people who had suffered physical or sexual violence at school reported suicide attempts” according to the Williams Institute. • “They [Transgender people] were unemployed at twice the rate of the general population” according to the Washington Post • “26%, reported losing their jobs directly due to their gender identity/ expression. Particularly hard hit were those who were Black (32%), multiracial (36%), and American Indian (36%).” According to the Injustice at Every Turn Survey

Transgender Awareness Week: November 14th-20th Ways to celebrate Transgender Awareness Week is by using a trans person’s preferred pronouns and name, not harassing a transgender person, and learning the Key Terms of the Transgender community.

32

FVTC Student Publication | November | 2017

Key Terms (according to GLAAD) Sex

The classification of a person as male or female. At birth, infants are assigned a sex, usually based on the appearance of their external anatomy. (This is what is written on the birth certificate.) A person’s sex, however, is actually a combination of bodily characteristics including: chromosomes, hormones, internal and external reproductive organs, and secondary sex characteristics.

Gender Identity

A person’s internal, deeply held sense of their gender. For transgender people, their own internal gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. Most people have a gender identity of man or woman (or boy or girl). For some people, their gender identity does not fit neatly into one of those two choices (see non-binary and/ or genderqueer below.) Unlike gender expression (see below) gender identity is not visible to others. Gender Expression

External manifestations of gender, expressed through a person’s name, pronouns, clothing, haircut, behavior, voice, and/ or body characteristics. Society identifies these cues as masculine and feminine, although what is considered masculine or feminine changes over time and varies by culture. Typically, transgender people seek to align their gender expression with their gender identity, rather than the sex they were assigned at birth. Sexual Orientation

Describes a person’s enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction to another person. Gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same. Transgender people may be straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer. For example, a person who transitions from male to female (a trans woman) and is attracted solely to men would typically identify as a straight woman.

Transgender (adj.)

Cross-dresser

An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/ or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth. People under the transgender umbrella may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms - including transgender. Some of those terms are defined below. Use the descriptive term preferred by the person. Many transgender people are prescribed hormones by their doctors to bring their bodies into alignment with their gender identity. Some undergo surgery as well. But not all transgender people can or will take those steps, and a transgender identity is not dependent upon physical appearance or medical procedures.

While anyone may wear clothes associated with a different sex, the term cross-dresser is typically used to refer to men who occasionally wear clothes, makeup, and accessories culturally associated with women. Those men typically identify as heterosexual. This activity is a form of gender expression and not done for entertainment purposes. Cross-dressers do not wish to permanently change their sex or live full-time as women.

Transsexual (adj.)

An older term that originated in the medical and psychological communities. Still preferred by some people who have permanently changed (or plan to change) their bodies through medical interventions, including but not limited to hormones and/ or surgeries. Unlike transgender, transsexual is not an umbrella term. It is best to ask which term a person prefers. Trans

Used as shorthand to mean transgender or transsexual - or sometimes to be inclusive of a wide variety of identities under the transgender umbrella.

Transition

Altering one’s birth sex is not a one-step procedure; it is a complex process that occurs over a long period of time. Transition can include some or all of the following personal, medical, and legal steps: telling one’s family, friends, and co-workers; using a different name and new pronouns; dressing differently; changing one’s name and/or sex on legal documents; hormone therapy; and possibly (though not always) one or more types of surgery. The exact steps involved in transition vary from person to person. Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS)

Also called Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS). Refers to doctorsupervised surgical interventions, and is only one small part of transition (see transition above). Avoid the phrase “sex change operation.” Do not refer to someone as being “pre-op” or “post-op.” Not all transgender people choose to, or can afford to, undergo medical surgeries.

Gender Dysphoria

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association released the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) which replaced the outdated entry “Gender Identity Disorder” with Gender Dysphoria, and changed the criteria for diagnosis. The necessity of a psychiatric diagnosis remains controversial, as both psychiatric and medical authorities recommend individualized medical treatment through hormones and/or surgeries to treat gender dysphoria. Some transgender advocates believe the inclusion of Gender Dysphoria in the DSM is necessary in order to advocate for health insurance that covers the medically necessary treatment recommended for transgender people. Cisgender

A term used by some to describe people who are not transgender. “Cis-” is a Latin prefix meaning “on the same side as,” and is therefore an antonym of “trans-.” A more widely understood way to describe people who are not transgender is simply to say nontransgender people. Gender Non-Conforming

A term used to describe some people whose gender expression is different from conventional expectations of masculinity and femininity. Please note that not all gender non-conforming people identify as transgender; nor are all transgender people gender non-conforming. Many people

34

have gender expressions that are not entirely conventional – that fact alone does not make them transgender. Many transgender men and women have gender expressions that are conventionally masculine or feminine. Simply being transgender does not make someone gender non-conforming. The term is not a synonym for transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone self-identifies as gender nonconforming.

Non-binary and/or genderqueer

Terms used by some people who experience their gender identity and/or gender expression as falling outside the categories of man and woman. They may define their gender as falling somewhere in between man and woman, or they may define it as wholly different from these terms. The term is not a synonym for transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone self-identifies as non-binary and/or genderqueer.

Transgender Day of Remembrance: November 20th Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honor the memory of a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. Transgender people lost to violence started an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Tips: • Transgender women are not cross-dressers or drag queens. Drag queens are men, typically gay men, who dress like women for the purpose of entertainment. Be aware of the differences between transgender women, cross-dressers, and drag queens. Use the term preferred by the person. Do not use the word “transvestite” at all, unless someone specifically self-identifies that way. • Use their preferred pronouns and name. • Their name and pronouns are not a privilege and shouldn’t be taken away if you are mad at them or they have done something bad.
