Hijab Day Celebration “Hijab? What is it?” Icha Khairunnisa

FVTC Student Publication | March | 2017

Are you familiar with the word “hijab”? Are you familiar with the word “hijab”? It is an Arabic word which means

“barrier, wall, or curtain”. Some people use this word to describe the veil or scarf worn by Muslim women to cover their head and chest in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family. The purpose of wearing hijab is to shift the focus away from woman’s physical appearance, to show modesty and identity as a Muslim woman. People around the world celebrated Hijab Day on the February 1. In relation with this worldwide celebration, Muslim community in collaboration with Appleton Public Library and various organizations in the city conducted the second consecutive event called “Hijab Day” on February 11, 2017 at the Appleton Public Library. This event is open for anyone. The idea is to spread awareness and mutual understanding about Islam and woman in Islam. This event gained positive appreciation from many people. There were around 150 people attended the event. The speaker did not only cover the information about Hijab, but also about Islam in general. Many non-Muslims attended and actively asked questions.

One question raised during the session was, “What can we do to proactively support our Muslim brothers and sisters?” The audiences show their great interest to support their Muslim neighbors. The speaker and Muslim community sincerely thanked for that support and she said, “Please do not remain silent and help us to spread our good intentions.” The session has brought many people into one awareness: different religions do not stop them to support each other. They are brothers and sisters in one nation. At the end of the session, some audiences tried to wear hijab assisted by other Muslim women. They kept wearing it after the session. This is one of the ways to show their solidarity to Muslim people in this country. “We are with you”, that is their message to them.

Trans Wrestler Connor Jackson

The last couple of years I have seen

an increase in transgender visibility in the news and social media, and this past weekend proved to be no different. Texas held their state wrestling championship, and because of school rules a transgender boy won the girls wrestling championship. His name is Mack Beggs, a 17 year old from Trinity High School in Euless, Texas. He went the entire season without a loss, ending it 56-0. He would rather wrestle with the boy’s team, but because the school district’s rule is to use the birth certificate to determine gender he is not able to do so. Because he is undergoing hormone replacement therapy to get a masculine physique that matches his gender, the parents of other wrestlers’ tried to get him barred from competing because he has an unfair advantage.

Student Opinion Beggs wants to wrestle on the boy’s team, and parents don’t want him to wrestle on the girl’s team, so logic should seem that he would wrestle on the boy’s team. If the University Interscholastic League were to follow the same rules as the NCAA, Beggs would have to play on the boy’s team. Current NCAA rules say that for transgender men, they have a choice to play on a men’s or women’s team before starting hormone treatment but as soon as they start they are only allowed to play on a men’s team. The NCAA recognizes hormone treatment is powerful and does give an advantage over women. Unfortunately the high school didn’t research effectively, created the birth certificate rule, and now have a controversy on their hands. Let transgender people play on the team with the gender they choose, and let them go in the bathroom that aligns with their gender.

Theme: Love Ball

Poetry by Nkululeko Victor Masombuka

So with my poetic art abilities I tried to dazzle her… I may not know what love is but I love what I fee for you. They might say there is no true love, but what I feel is real for you. You are the Queen of the royal apartment in my chest, My x axis why shouldn’t I put you first In all my x coordinate you simplify my equation the best You are the x that I never had thus I struggled to find you. The princes of all the visions in all your decisions I’ll be right beside you. I’ll never let go in joy and in tears, for all my peers spent 12 years in the school of fears Trying to find you in the quadratic function of love affairs… I confess, when you walk by I couldn’t help but to stare Thus I didn’t find you by completing the square. When I saw you, your main essence captured my attention But I still didn’t find you by factorization….

An Ides of

March Warning

You shall regret your sequential choices Emperor of Rome Meanwhile From the shadows of Rome itself Brutus and Cassius are plotting your death Brutus has found Cinna’s letters The other conspirators also agree Caesar must be slaughtered Brutus cannot sleep tonight

Poetry By Joel Hovell

His wife Portia decides to kill herself By stabbing her hip She desired to hear Brutus speak

Oh hail Caesar! Stay home on March 15th There are assassins lurking in the shadows Your swift rise to power Has sparked conspiracies against your hide Please Caesar With all due respect Return for the battlefields of Hispania and Gaul

24

About the dark secrets he possessed There’s two strange tales Rumors that spread through Rome like wildfire There’s a lion wandering the streets A screeching owl during daylight hours Cicero informs Casca of these juicy rumors What on Earth is going on? Oh hail Caesar! Please listen to your wife Calpurnia!

You’re safer amongst your thousands of loyal troops

Her nightmare depicted a dead Caesar

The suspicious death of Pompey

A Caesar stabbed a minimum of one hundred times

Has raised the eyebrows of senators

I’m proud you did consult the priest

There’s a universal murmur amongst them

A precaution before heading for work

‘Caesar must be stopped at all costs’

On the Ides of March

This includes your trustworthy friend Brutus

He read the entrails of the sacrificed animal

Caesar, make yourself lost

Which is a bad sign Caesar

For you killed Pompey’s sons

In accordance to your nonsensical beliefs

You chose to disregard the soothsayer

Unfortunately

Decius swayed your reaction about the entrails He made you laugh your final, voluntary words Caesar! Don’t dismiss the entrails! Don’t dismiss Calpurnia’s nightmare! Please listen to the soothsayer He said those fateful words again ‘Beware of the Ides of March’ And yet you ignored him Along with Artemidorus There’s no saving you now Caesar You have been sentenced to death You arrive at work Your first order of business Listening to Metellus’s petition Because his brother was banished Caesar! The conspirators have surrounded you! The moment to escape is gone! Casca commences your assassination Riddling your clothed body with a dagger Farewell Caesar Famous icon of the Roman Empire Your blood covers the hands of Brutus and Cassius A civil war ignites to avenge your killers Rome shall never be the same And you’re not alone in death For many men vie for power Selfish and inconsiderate Like a King Midas in that old folk tale

You must be religiously committed to your dreams. Now the patience I’m talking about doesn’t mean merely waiting (sitting still) for success to come your way. The patience I’m talking about is that one which is described by the great Isaiah when he said, “those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint…”

Strive2Succeed Nkululeko Victor Masombuka Destiny is pursuit by definition, education, revelation and dedication. I’ve heard many times saying that there are laws of success, laws of prosperity. I’ve figured that there are all laws of the universe- there are no laws of success but qualities of success. Success is pursued by everyone but can only be attained by someone with the qualities of success. Because it is the qualities you possess that will hinder you from succeeding of lead you straight in the path of success. Hence in this book we say Strive to succeed. The reason why most of my people are so superstition about many things in life - they believe in everything else but themselves - is because nature makes it hard almost impossible for man to succeed. But fact is, nature is not against you. The universe doesn’t have a problem with you acquiring that state of success. The friction that is posed to you by nature in your path to success is temporary. In the couple of years that I’ve been alive I have made this discovery; nature gives up easily and quickly. We usually lack one quality, which is needed in life and our journey to success and that quality is called Patience. Many lack the patience to be successful. In your journey of success you need to have a lot of patience. There are many things that will try to discourage you in your path but you need to have patience. Have stubborn faith.

26

FVTC Student Publication | March | 2017

If you can analyze the picture that the writer is trying to paint here, you will realize that he talks about someone waiting upon the Lord but He (the waiter) is like a waiter at a restaurant, hence he has his strength renewed, hence he describes the same person as walking, running and even flying. That is the highest level of patience. To wait upon success like an infant in the womb of his/her mother: waiting- growing toward the day of birth. Even in the streets of success we grow, develop ourselves, we push forward, we keep walking and running, if that is not enough we attempt flying because the day of birth is surely coming. The battle of life is whether we are going to give up or nature will succumb. Nature likes to be dominated, but she is so hard and violent that she would break the leg of the one who is suggestive and not definite. Nature loves to bow and she has no mercy for the one who bows to her. For you to succeed you must therefore be dominant. I guess that’s why my favorite book says the Creator commanded us (human beings) to have dominion and subdue the earth. The friction that is posed by nature to you on your path to success is just to test the extent of your Patience. Once you pass the test then nature will yield to you, things will fly toward your direction. Remember this the patience necessary on your path to success is the character you need to sustain you once you succeed.

FVTC Volunteers Critical to Autism Walk Success

Last year’s Fox Cities Walk-4-Autism

broke attendance and fundraising records and FVTC volunteers had a lot to do with that success! With more than 4,000 people in attendance, the Fox Cities Walk is the largest autism event in Wisconsin and, as such, requires an army of volunteers. For the past eleven years, FVTC students, faculty, and staff members have made up the majority of the volunteers who help make the day special for individuals with autism and their loved ones. Every year, Early Childhood Program students volunteer in large numbers to help with set up, games, and other activities—especially those activities involving children with autism and their siblings. The FVTC Early Childhood Program offers a specialized certificate in autism. Students pursuing that certificate and many other students in the Early Childhood associate degree program demonstrate

their commitment to helping children with autism by volunteering for the event year after year and the families of children with autism consistently express their appreciation for the volunteers. In addition, the Fox Cities Walk-4-Autism, sponsored by Friends of Autism, generated the funds to create a special scholarship for an FVTC Early Childhood student who completes the autism certificate and plans to work with children with autism. Another group that has volunteered to help at the event for several years comes from the FVTC Global Education Department. Students, staff, and faculty from the department report that the event is a favorite. FVTC students from all over the world spend the day setting up and directing walkers along the route, serving lunch, and dressing up as characters (including FVTC’s Foxy!) to entertain children. The students are participants

in community college programs sponsored by the US State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. As part of the program, the students volunteer at many charitable, civic, and cultural events throughout Northeast Wisconsin. In addition to the international students who provide direction to the walkers along the route, members of the FVTC Criminal Justice Student Association provide traffic and crowd control throughout the event and FVTC faculty, staff, and management work the children’s play area, the raffle, and the entertainment booths. Many FVTC graduates, including firefighters, EMS personnel, and police officers, also volunteer every year.

“Almost 80% of our volunteer squadron is made up of members of the FVTC community” said Jim Jones, Executive Director of Friends of Autism, the charity that hosts the walk. “We couldn’t do it without their help.” Over the years, Friends of Autism has donated more than $300,000 toward autism research, education, and awareness and provides grants to families in the Fox Valley to help with the expenses associated with autism treatment.

The 12th Annual Fox Cities Walk-4-Autism is

Saturday, April 22nd

At Tanner’s Grill & Bar in Kimberly If you would like to volunteer, or for more information about autism, please visit www.friendsofautism.org.

For Crohn’s Disease? Joel Hovell

Over the last century, Crohn’s Disease,

and its bovine counterpart Johne’s Disease, has been suggested as being caused by something known as Mycobacterium avium subspecies Paratuberculosis. Unfortunately, most Crohn’s patients receive biological modifiers like Remicade and Humira to deal with inflammation issues and are prescribed a myriad of complementary medications that not only produce harsh side effects, but could potentially make the patient’s quality of life worse. Many Crohn’s patients benefit from these particular medicines, but many more do not. Somehow, the medical establishment has managed to not only overlook the real culprit of Crohn’s Disease cases until recently, but has been strongly opposed to the concept the ailment has a bacterial trigger. With the present advances in research and development to find an effective treatment, a potential cure for

Crohn’s Disease has been flying underneath the radar except in certain medical social circles. However, this has changed with the start of a Phase 1 clinical trial in January 2017 at the University of Oxford in England. For the first time in human history, not only will this research possibly solve an extremely tough condition to treat, but provide a pathway to continue the development of more effective treatments for conditions like Ulcerative Colitis, Multiple Sclerosis, Psoriasis, Lupus, and Type 1 Diabetes. You’re probably asking yourself, what is Crohn’s Disease? Unless one suffers from the disease themselves or knows someone with the condition, it hasn’t been very well known except over the past few years. Crohn’s Disease, essentially, is where one’s digestive system is inflamed to the point where some Crohn’s patients may require surgery to remove diseased colon and/or small intestine. Also,

many will experience widespread joint pain, anemia, weight loss, uveitis (inflammation of the eyes), etc. because every patient is different. To the misfortune of many Crohn’s patients, their gastroenterologists will explain that their condition is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks the body for unexplained reasons. However, as more research papers from successful experiments are published online and in peer-review journals, this entrenched explanation for the cause to Crohn’s Disease is slowly being chipped away. As I explained earlier, Crohn’s Disease, with the empirical evidence to back it up, is caused by an infection of Mycobacterium avium subspecies Paratuberculosis. Although other bacteria may complement this specific mycobacterium in their ability to cause distress in Crohn’s patients, every time these particular types of patients have undergone a blood test, this pathogen has been found in alarming amounts, enough for any physician to recognize something doesn’t seem right. Now, for those who don’t suffer from Crohn’s Disease or have a loved one with the illness, what does this have to do with you? According to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America website, about 780,000 people have Crohn’s Disease, and this number has continued to rise. Furthermore, the direct cost to treat Crohn’s Disease, and other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), is nearing $2 billion, or about $2,560 per patient. These numbers don’t include the cost to health care insurance companies, or medical bills paid for by charities. As a Crohn’s Disease patient myself, I realize the choice to overlook the newly started clinical trial to test a revolutionary vaccine is an easy one for those who don’t suffer from the illness. However, I should also mention that Crohn’s Disease is associated with a faulty immune system due to one’s genetic makeup. Unless you already have the illness, or have gotten your DNA screened, one cannot accurately predict who will get Crohn’s Disease in their lifetime. I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe anyone would want to suffer from this ailment and its unpredictable consequences, or experience another illness like Crohn’s Disease. If you would like to access more information about Crohn’s Disease, the Phase One clinical trial, or Mycobacterium avium subspecies Paratuberculosis, I have provided numerous sources below.

Meet IT Instructor Joe Wetzel

Information Technology

Started working at FVTC 2001 Started working as a support staff software development and web development for the college for about 6 years before he started teaching. He Teaches: PHP, Intro to Mobile App, Ethical Hacking, Agile Development

Where do you think the world is going as far as

Would you recommend anyone to take Information

IT is here and it’s a good field.

I really believe that it’s going Mobile- everything is happening on my phone. I can do work from anywhere. Mobile apps have made life easier for me. It doesn’t matter whether we are talking stalk trading or shopping lists. The other part to that is the whole artificial intelligence - I go home and I talk to Alexa I tell her to turn on my TV, switch off the lights etc. So much of my house is becoming automated. When I drive away from my house my garage door knows I’m leaving and it automatically closes.

How has I.T benefited you both as an instructor and

Besides IT which other field do you think it’s the next

in your personal life?

big thing?

Given me a career that has the ability to move around. If I would’ve gotten to IT I’m sure things would have been different. In my earlier life I was in manufacturing, going from job to job where as there is a huge demand for IT and once you get in it you are not locked.

I’ve spent so much time focusing on my world that I don’t know outside IT, what would be big in the future

Technology as a field of Study? If so why?

Absolutely! Right now there is a high demand for I.T workers by the year 2021 there’s going to be 8 000 jobs unfilled within the Wisconsin and those will be the jobs that they cannot fill. That’s because the demands for I.T Workers as growing but the students enrolling in I.T Programs is decreasing. So that’s a big problem.

For example I did software development for a while I wrote Apps (Desktop Applications) then I moved over to the Web I developed web applications and dealt with Animations, then I moved into instruction and now I’m really focusing my energy both on security and Mobile development.
