“You make a difference, every day” Award Dian Nielsen is the Fox Valley Family YMCA Employee nominated for the “You make a difference, every day” Award. Dian has been a Y employee since 1999. She has been instrumental in changing the lives of many members through her work in our fitness department. Not only does Dian teach classes and personal train but she makes a personal difference in the lives of those she comes in contact with through her caring personality, supportive nature, and her personal drive. A specific example of how Dian has made a great impact is through her relationship with Deanna Veitengruber. My name is Dian Nielsen and I am a Fitness Instructor and a Personal Trainer at the YMCA West Branch. I would like to tell you about a very special Y member and client of mine, Deanna Veitengruber. In 2003, at the age of 19, Deanna was in an auto accident which caused a severe closed head brain injury. After she survived the first 48 hours, the doctors could not give her a prognosis. They were not hopeful that she would even ever walk or talk again. She was in ICU for 10 weeks in a vegetative state.

In May of 2009, Deanna’s mother brought her to me for personal training Deanna is still training with me today and has made unbelievable progress. At first it was a challenge for her to hold a weight without shaking, to walk on the treadmill and especially anything having to do with balance. Now she can lift heavy weights, run on the treadmill and she can even do squats on the Bosu Ball! I love working out with Deanna because she loves to work hard! She is always open to try new things. She will occasionally give me heavy sighs when I tell her to do more sets or reps or when I have her do walking lunges and step-ups on the bench but she thanks me later when she sees all of the beautiful muscle tone she is getting. Deanna used to be a gymnast, so every once in a while I let her walk on the balance beam. That always gets a big smile. I could not be more proud of Deanna!! She is not just a client, she is also my friend!!!

From there she was moved to Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital where she began to wake up. Like a baby, she had to regain her ability to speak, eat, etc. After four months in the hospital, Deanna came home in a wheelchair, unable to walk or take care of herself. Her mom and sisters pushed her to stand and eventually walk! Her mom tells me that they were always involved in the YMCA since her girls were babies, so it made sense that Deanna go there to further her recovery.

AQUATICS Swim Lessons

Youth Classes

If you are new to the program or are not sure what level to place your child, take advantage of a free swim evaluation. The Aquatics Department will determine the best swim level for your child. Registering for the appropriate swim level will help your child get the maximum benefit from the class. Choose from one of the following evaluation days.

Level 1 This introductory level will focus on the building blocks of swimming. Participants will work on the basic floating skills, kicking skills and pool safety. Swimmers will need to become comfortable enough to fully submerge their face into the water.

Evaluation Dates:

Saturday, May 5, 12:30 – 1:30 pm Saturday, June 2, 12:30 – 1:30 pm Saturday, July 7, 12:30 – 1:30 pm Saturday, August 4, 12:30 – 1:30 pm Parent/Child Classes

With the use of toys and group activities, this class provides a great opportunity for children to interact with other swimmers in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Water Tots (19 months – 3 years) Adult participation is required in this class. This class is for children not quite ready to swim alone with the instructor. Participants are introduced to personal flotation devices and swim equipment.

Level 2 In this level, swimmers will be taught the fundamentals of swimming, kick, float, glide and the beginning steps to free style and back stroke. Level 3 Children will review and continue to build on previous skills. Swimmer will also be taught rhythmic breathing, treading water, and progressive diving skills. Swimmers will start to focus on free style, back stroke and underwater skills. Level 4 Swimmers will develop confidence and strength while focusing on technique for freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and elementary back stroke. They will be expected to swim one length of the pool without the assistance of an instructor.

Level 5 In addition to reviewing previous skills, swimmers will refine their technique and be introduced to sidestroke and butterfly and flip turns. Level 6 Swimmers will focus on refining their stroke and kicking techniques that gives them the efficiency and power to swim longer distances. Children will be expected to swim 50 yards of each stroke by the conclusion of this level. Private Lessons

IT’S AN OLYMPIC SUMMER! Join us for all the excitement as we follow TEAM USA to London!

We will have trivia contests, games, puzzles, weekly prizes! And to add to an already exciting summer, we will be hosting an Olympic themed Mini-Meet on August 17th at 5:00 pm! The Mini-Meet is an in-house meet for our instructional students. All gymnasts in the Mini-Meet will perform floor, bar and beam routines for family and friends. This year all of our participants will receive medals and salute from the awards stand, just like award winning Olympic gymnasts! Speaking of award winning gymnasts, did you know that the Fox Valley Family YMCA has its own competitive team? The Fox Valley Flyers compete in both YMCA and USAG meets across Illinois and Wisconsin. They also compete in the YMCA Nationals which are held all over the United States. To be part of the Flyers competitive team, gymnasts must master all of the skills in the instructional classes and then try out for a spot on the team. Team try-outs are held in conjunction with gymnastics summer camp each June. See page 27 for more details.
