Member of the Month: Randall Moore
Hours Central Y, Plano
Randall Moore lives in Oswego with his wife and two children. He has been a member of the Fox Valley Family YMCA since November, 2009.
Monday – Thursday: 4:30 am – 9:00 pm
Randall was a steel worker for over 30 years until a serious accident at work forced him to retire. He had nine surgeries and three amputations to his left hand and now lives in pain 24/7. Randall said when he first came to the YMCA he had no hope, but since has lost over 40 pounds and has been able to get off his medications. Randall credits the biggest part of his success to the staff at the Y. The staff has become a bigger part of his life because they are so caring. The YMCA gave Randall something that he thought he had lost, hope and happiness. He has hope now and can do something’s he couldn’t do before he started coming to the YMCA. The YMCA has even helped Randall change his eating habits and has helped him realize life is worth living!! His favorite motto is “It’s great to be alive!”

Offering care and education for all ages, where we understand that what your child does with their day is just as important as what you do with yours. Our experienced staff creates innovative learning experiences that focus on the whole child. Infants (6 weeks – 15 months) The infant room is designed on safety and individuality. We follow your child’s individual schedule for sleeping, feeding, and play. The primary focus of our infant room staff is to develop bonds with your child to help them build self-esteem and feel safe and secure. Toddlers (15 months – 2 years) During the toddler stage it’s about developing relationships. Our toddler staff creates experiences for children to begin to develop friendships and learn how to work together. We introduce hands on experiences to promote development of the whole child. Twos Two-year-olds are beginning to exert their independence. Our nurturing staff create experiences where children can be successful and yet appropriately challenged. A variety of activities and equipment are available in this classroom that promotes educational skill development as well as the social concepts of group interaction. Threes, Fours, and Fives We believe children learn by doing. Teachers implement themebased units that build self confidence as well as educational and social skills. Activities include language, math, science, music, art, computer skills, social interaction and physical movement. Included in our curriculum children experience additional programs available at the YMCA such as music, gymnastics swim and dance. preschool Preschool Program for 2½ through 5 year olds Welcome to the wonderful world of preschool! The overall objective for the preschool program is to facilitate a nurturing, fun, and challenging learning environment in which a child can achieve their fullest potential, feel safe, and develop a love for learning. We accomplish this through a program filled with discovery, play, sharing, and discussing various themes that will enable children to grow and develop at their own rate. Children ages 2½ to 3½ years old meet twice a week for a two hour session. Our number one goal for this age group is to expose the children to a structured preschool setting in which their social skills can flourish. While introducing the children to various themes, the teachers will work with them on using their communication skills, sharing, listening, being cooperative with both peers and teachers, language abilities, and developing a love for school. Activities will be hands on and explore such areas as art, math, science, language arts, music and movement, imaginations, and fine motor skills. Children ages 3–4 years old will continue working on the importance of their social skills but also start exploring more of the academic side of school as well. These skills will include cooperation, listening, sharing, acceptance of school structure, and developing good self esteem. Some of the academic concepts will be letters, phonics, numbers, writing, science activities, and mathematical concepts. Children who are eligible to attend kindergarten the following school year meet three or four times a week. The Pre-Kindergarten program is specifically designed to prepare children for kindergarten. In addition to the skills listed above, we introduce the children to patterns, numbers up to 100, experiment with writing and reading, science concepts, building independence skills, and being responsible. All students must pay a one-time non-refundable registration fee of $45 to reserve a spot.

Summer Day Camp 2012 Summer Day Camp 2012—Camp of Champions This summer the Y has combined fun weekly themes with the core character values that make up an Olympic Champion. Throughout the summer we will teach children the importance of being a well-rounded person in order to reach the highest set goal. This will be accomplished through weekly themed games, sports, team-building activities, field trips, swimming, crafts, and reflection time. Camp is offered Monday – Friday from 6:00 am – 6:00 pm. All children are grouped by the grade level they will be entering in the fall: K and 1st Grade / 2nd and 3rd Grade / 4th, 5th and 6th Grade / 7th Grade and Above (CIT Program). Weekly: $110 M / $130 NM Daily: $30 M / $50 NM * Register the Friday prior to the Camp Day to avoid a $20 late registration fee.
Register for Summer Camp at Healthy Kid’s Day and receive $10 off registration per family. (see pg. 4) Counselors in Training – CIT Children entering 7th grade and above in the fall are eligible for the Counselor in Training Program (CIT). The CIT program is for responsible adolescents who enjoy working with younger campers and being a leader. This program prepares CIT campers to be involved in leadership roles at camp and in their community through weekly service projects. They will learn how to handle conflicts, teach games, engage children, and have fun. There will be a special end of the year field trip just for CIT’s to thank them for their hard work. Due to the projects done within the CIT camp program, children are required to register per week, there is not daily fee for CIT’s. * This year CIT’s will be required to attend a training day prior to the start of camp.

The first week of camp is a salute to Mother Earth. We will teach the campers how one person becoming ecologically responsible can make a big difference in keeping our planet green for future generations. “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” — Michael Jordan. We will play a variety of traditional and silly sports this week, focusing on the importance of working together. Courage
Pirates aaargh tough! Build a pirate ship and watch it set sail. Learn pirate commands and search for treasure around the Y. Step right up and try your hand at all those fun carnival games. It’s more than just clowning around, it takes trust and cooperation with your peers to put on this big event! Join us as we celebrate how proud we are to be Americans in a week long Independence Day festivity. We will have a traditional cook-out with picnic games, a pudding eating contest, and an inflatable waterslide. *No Camp July 4th Take a trip around the world to learn about animals from different habitats. As we explore the animal kingdom the campers will be encouraged to respect themselves and others no matter if they have feathers, scales, or a trunk! Who says we can only celebrate holidays once a year? Show off your holiday spirit by coming to camp dressed in your Halloween costume. Decorate Valentine’s Day cards for your family and friends and go on an Easter egg hunt in mid-July. Welcome to the wettest week of summer! Wear your swimsuits and be prepared to get soaked! Campers will explore the meaning of honesty related to playing by the rules and making healthy choices in a fun and wet way. Meet and compete with your fellow YMCA campers as we gather for an Olympic celebration the same week as the London 2012 Olympians compete. Every camper’s abilities, talents, and strengths will be recognized as we experience the prestige of the Olympics. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s Super Campers! Dress up as a super hero, create a new super power, and brainstorm ways to save the world. Local heroes will talk about the importance of their jobs and how we can all care for one another, the community, and our country. Students enrolled in the YMCA’s SAFE program will have a chance to give their ideas for a summer camp weekly theme. The winner will get to see their ideas in action during the last week of summer.

Gymnasts that compete as part of our team have been doing gymnastics for many years and have worked their way through all of the instructional levels to make it this far. The Flyers are coached by Karen Oelker, Amy Killey, Chloe’ Oelker, and Alyssa Valbert. Our goal as coaches is and always has been to not only make this a winning strong team, but to teach our girls the importance of working together and supporting each other. Instructors will gradually remove the use of personal flotation devices throughout the session. In addition, participants will perform skills in the deep end of the pool.
