Dear Church Family, I know it’s difficult to believe, but we find ourselves at the beginning of 2011. The New Year comes with new challenges. For one, we say goodbye to Kathy Eaton who has served as the Children’s Ministry Director for 36 years. It is bittersweet as Kathy leaves us while accepting an opportunity at Sammamish Presbyterian Church. We will certainly miss Kathy, but are excited about her new opportunity. Karin Skone will be making a transition back to her home church starting January 1st. While she will no longer technically be on staff, she will volunteer her time with us on Wednesday nights helping with the youth this spring. Coming on board January 1st will be Jeff Murray who is no stranger to this congregation. We are glad Jeff is returning “home” to us. Dave Arkills, who has volunteered his time as Business Administrator the past four years, will be rolling off to spend more time with his family and traveling. His responsibilities will be absorbed by current staff and the Business Ministry Team under Session. The Session will need to meet in January to determine our future staffing needs when all the pledges are in and we have a clearer picture of our financial situation. In the meantime, I thank God for each of the ways these folks have served God through First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. As we look at the coming year, we anticipate a continued movement in a missional direction. I believe God is calling us (and all of our brothers and sisters in Christ) to be a light to this community. To this end, we start a new sermon series I am calling “The BLESS Challenge.” The foundational Scripture for the series is 1 John 4:19,21); “We love because he first loved us…And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister” (1 John 4:19, 21) We desire to be a faithful community where people discover and experience the transforming love of Jesus Christ, grow in their faith and dedication, and use their God-given talents and resources to help others experience God’s love. This is God’s mission for each of us. BLESS is a series of practices that I believe will help us collectively reach a new level and live a complete and balanced life in Christ.
4
These practices are:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
[B]e Aware [L]isten to God [E]at with Someone [S]erve Someone [S]tudy Scripture
These actions are focus areas for us to apply God’s mission in our individual lives, on our campus, and throughout the community and world. I have asked all of our program staff members and elders who oversee our ministry teams to participate in this series by creating opportunities to help members and friends of the congregation to put these practices into action. These are, after all, things that each of us can do every day. How will you participate in the BLESS challenge? I have great anticipation of what God will do in 2011 through First Presbyterian Church! With love and prayers,
Pastor Jack

Do you remember telemarketers? Those wonderful
people whose call would interrupt dinner to insist that you needed to upgrade your phone plan, install a security system— or worse yet—to make a donation to a local charity. I always felt particularly guilty saying no to the person seeking funds for the local police department--at least until I remembered that this person actually was calling from a cubicle in Des Moines. Fortunately, today most of us have put our phone numbers on the national “do not call” list and now rarely receive these sort of calls except on rare occasion. And when we do, we’re irked. Today most people’s view of evangelism is something akin to telemarketing. Many people have put any potential explanation of Christianity on their personal “do not call list.” So, can we conclude that people really have become jaded to the gospel? Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that most people, similar to our collective view of telemarketers, have simply become jaded toward anyone attempting to sell us something. Similar to the person calling from Des Moines who truly isn’t interested in me, most people perceive evangelists as people with an agenda and not really interested in them. Sure, they might care enough to sell me on heaven, or to get me to come to church, but do they really care about me? So, is evangelism a sales pitch? A proposition presented over coffee for people to obtain “get out of hell” insurance? If that’s all that evangelism is,
Pastor of Family Life & Missions Mark.Tumney@fpcyakima.com 248-7940 x108
world found a Savior who truly could set things right. Those who cared for others found appreciation. And those who sought to bring peace to this world found One who brought true shalom. (see Matt 5:1-9) then perhaps the world’s perception of Christians as telemarketers is justified. But what if evangelism is about something completely different? What if instead evangelism truly is about blessing someone—really caring for them, befriending them? That’s what Jesus did. Contrary to what often is considered the “gospel,” Jesus’ message was not simply about how we might to go heaven when we die. Of course our eternal salvation was certainly at the core of Jesus’ ministry, but His ministry also was about enabling us to enjoy eternal life today. Jesus said, “I have come so that you might have life to the full” (Jn 10:10)—not one day in the sweet by in by, but beginning today. The gospel that Jesus proclaimed was that God’s Kingdom was breaking into this world in power and that we could participate in cooperative friendship with God for the restoration of the world. God’s reign, His desires and purposes for all of creation are being manifest and carried out. God’s future was/is even now breaking into the present. In other words, God desires to bless us and to bring everyone back into fellowship with Him and one another—to put all things right. It was this message that held relevance to the 1st century Jews who flocked to Jesus—and the message that truly remains good news for everyone today. In Jesus, those who were at the end of their rope found renewed hope. Those who were mourning found true comfort. Those who had been crushed by this life found Someone who offered them new and tangible reasons for confidence. Those fed up with the injustices of this
Now, if we are the body of Christ, we similarly should seek to bless others, even as Jesus did. We, too, should seek to offer others hope, comfort, confidence, justice, appreciation, and peace. Yes, we should certainly explain to people how they might receive forgiveness and entrance into heaven, but this message must be wrapped in an incarnational, personal blessing. Of course the problem with each of these means of blessing others is that they are terribly inconvenient. It’s so much easier to be the telemarketer, offering a “disembodied” message. But one cannot truly bless others from a comfortable cubicle in Des Moines. Why? Because blessing involves an ongoing relationship. The good news must be relationally incarnate even as the Father was in Jesus Christ. In other words, blessing only truly becomes reality when it is demonstrated relationally before and for the other. Over the next few weeks as a church we will make a special evangelistic effort to our community by employing a blessing campaign. Not as telemarketers removed from the ebb and flow of the messiness of life, but rather as those who incarnate the gospel as hospitable friends to those around us. While it is inconvenient to bless others, it’s a whole lot more satisfying than any form of evangelism resembling telemarketing—and much more faithful to Jesus’ message and commission.

About a year after my arrival to First Presbyterian Church, Marv Becker came up with a brilliant idea called Kaffee Klatsch to bring seniors together to socialize, sing and hear great programs together. It created community and sealed a great relationship with our congregation. We have had politicians, story tellers, hobbyist, historians and wonderful Christmas programs during the last nine years. So don’t be strangers. Come to enjoy your community. Tentative Kaffee Klatsch Program for the 2011 season. Davis HS Choir, at Kaffee Klatsch in December With the approaching of each New Year, most of us have entertained at least a few thoughts about resolutions for positive changes in our lives. Losing weight and doing more exercise are often near the top of the list. Cleaning out the garage, reading the Bible more, learning something about modern technology and getting really organized are sometimes targets, too. Each person has his or her own ideas about what they would like to change. Once the goals have been established we even make modest gains with the top two or three items…for a few days. Every now and then, we are wildly successful with one of our efforts and that brings enough reward to provide additional impetus to continue the changed behavior. As we face 2011 thinking about how we’ll make improvements in our lives, perhaps we should also focus on being a blessing for others as part of our ‘mission for God’. In

fact, that probably ought to be right at the top of the list. Verse after verse in the Bible gently reminds us that we are here to do good works for Him. “…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) January brings a fresh start and new opportunities for each of us. While our world is currently riddled with financial concerns and available resources appear to be dwindling, this is a golden time for all of us to follow Paul’s advice to the Ephesians. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) God will be with us through this next year. We are in His hands. How we handle success and adversity for ourselves and how we help others face their own challenges is our personal witness for Him. Those who elect to follow Paul’s
advice will find that by being a blessing to others, they, too, are blessed in unexpected ways. Just as we enjoy the feel of a looser waistband on an article of clothing that was once too snug (after modest adjustments to our intake), we also find unparalled joy in helping others. The gift of simply taking time to listen, really truly listen, to another person can make a significant difference in their lives. We have each been given twenty four hours in a day. (Sometimes we even wish there were a few more!) But…it’s totally up to each of us as to how we use them. Now is the time to re-examine the way we’re spending the hours we already have. Can we re-adjust some of our activities so that we can bring further blessings to others? Caroline Mason

is the world in which God has chosen we minister. This is the world in which we are to care for people and have compassion on them. And, as we go about our day to day living if we allow ourselves to keep our eyes, ears and heart open to the leading of our Lord He will direct us to those He desires us to bless. Our response is to be obedient and generous in the love of Christ. It’s not complicated. We must simply choose to be available to the possibilities put before us each day. Perhaps it is sharing the kindness of Christ as you visit with the checker at Safeway and thank her for her service. It is taking the opportunity to pray with a co-worker for their sick child. Or, maybe it is shoveling snow or raking leaves for a neighbor and praying a blessing over their home as you work. His interruptions bring us our best opportunities for sharing our faith and being a help and encouragement to others. So, go about your day but be ready to be open to the places and people God will lead you; this is the life He has commissioned us to live! Heavenly Father, I am so BUSY…help me have the discipline to slow down and be available to the interruptions in my life. spring retreat March 4-6 at the Cambell’s Resort in Chelan. We are blessed to have Kathy Bricel as our main speaker. A weekend you won’t want to miss! Look for registration details by the end of the month.
My family and I were in Antojitos last week…went to pay for the bill and the people in front of us, had already paid for our dinner…saw the people, even had eye contact with them, and know that we had never met them. I totally believe that the payment of our bill was an offering of “Living the Blessed Life”…they had every opportunity to acknowledge us but chose to remain anonymous. Instead, we went to pay our bill and it had completely been taken care of…we were a recipient of God’s blessing on us…a gift from this couple, who had no idea who we were but were obedient unto God to make a difference and to share His wealth with a free dinner for us… WAYYYYY COOLLLLLLLLL!! We, in turn, decided the next day to continue this Blessing on someone else…we will be donating an older car of ours to the YWCA Women’s Shelter, to bless someone else…again sharing His wealth for the Kingdom. People who are interested may call me at (509) 453-292 or email me at loveincyakima@ hotmail.com. 1. The Clean Air Authority would like to use Love INC to help orchardists get rid of trees for firewood. We need LOTS of people to do this; usually from spring through autumn. We must find out if groups are interested in doing this so we have a list available when needed. I have been asked to let the Clean Air Authority know the first week of January so they can advertise this to the orchardists. While we cannot use all the wood available, we can surely use enough to bless our clients and help orchardists decrease the amount they need to burn. There are a lot of details to work out to make this work. The first step is to see if people are interested in helping. Please let me know if your home group, men's ministry, Bible Study group, etc is interested. Teens can certainly help with stacking the wood, but will not be able to help with the cutting for liability reasons. 2. Receptionist on Mondays and Wednesdays 3. Weekly pick-up of donations left at the Love INC office and delivered to our many church ministries. 4. Groups of people to pick up donated furniture and/or deliver furniture to our clients. Pick-up or truck needed. 5. People to teach life skill classes. People who have experience and desire to share with others. Skills like: cooking, car repair, how to make a menu, budgeting, gardening, how to apply for a job, Bible studies, new believer's class. The list is only limited by our imagination.

Starting January 1, Jeff will be taking over as the new leader of the Student Ministry Department. For those of you who don’t know Jeff, he moved to Yakima as a grade schooler and has been a part of the First Pres community ever since. He graduated high school in 2003 from West Valley, and followed that up with an Associate’s Degree from YVCC in 2005. In 2006 Jeff became the fulltime Assistant to the Director of Student Ministries, until he decided in 2007 to go to Whitworth University. During his time at Whitworth Jeff earned a degree in Theology and spent the summers as one of the Student Ministry Interns here at First Pres. We are so grateful that Jeff wants to come back to Yakima to continue working with young people and to be a leader in our community. Please pray for him as he begins this new adventure. Also, Jeff will be looking for people to join him in Student Ministry, so be praying about how you might get involved.

TYLER VAN HORN and KARIN SKONE But don’t think that just because Jeff is coming that you are getting rid of Tyler and Karin. Tyler will be moving to half time in the Student Ministry Department, where he will now fulfill the role of Assistant to the Director. The other half of Tyler’s job will now be working with college-aged students and young people in their 20’s. Karin will also be moving to part time, focusing her time and energy on Wednesday nights and the administrative duties of the Student Ministries Department. Karin and her husband DJ will also be transitioning back to the church they came from in East Valley. Both Karin and Tyler are excited to see Jeff move into his new role, and look forward to being a part of his leadership team. Please pray for Tyler and Karin as they transition into their new ministry positions.

So… it’s that time of year… Christmas music,
Christmas lights, shopping, shopping and more shopping, and for some of us, the bah-hum bugs. A few Fridays ago I had to go shopping for a gift for the Toys for Tots program. My husband and I had a Christmas party to attend that Saturday night for his work. It was just one of those days, I was on a mission (not a mission from God) to get this gift bought and get out of there. I was standing in the middle of the toys looking at all of the dolls. I am sure I was looking very confused, since I have 2 boys and don’t have the opportunity to buy for girls very often. All of a sudden a woman approached me and commented on the doll I was considering, how her daughter would love it. That is how our conversation began. As I told her what I was looking for, she informed me that her children were chosen to receive a gift from the Salvation Army because their father had recently passed away. It was then that I realized that there was just something special about this woman. I really can’t explain it, but there was something about her eyes. There was something that felt comfortable… almost peaceful. The conversation came so naturally, like she was friend. I asked her how many kids she had. “5” she replied, “10, 8, 6, 3, and 3”. All I could respond was, “Wow…twins”. She then proceeded to tell me that since her children were receiving a gift from the Salvation Army, she would then be able to buy the necessary things that they needed. In my cynical nature, I glanced to see what was in her cart. There was a dish rack, mop, and dish towel. All the things that I take for granted. I then asked her if there was anything else that she and her family needed. Her response was that she did not want to take advantage, that there are a lot of people in need out there. I told her that she was not taking advantage. I then asked her if there was something I could do for her? I told her about our church, and that maybe we could provide them with

With tears in her eyes, she looked at me and said “I was meant to be here today”. With tears in my eyes I said, “I think I was meant to be here today too”. What started out as a really rough day, turned into one of the best days I can remember. This woman and her children have been in my mind and my heart every day since that chance meeting in the store. Maybe I was on a mission from God and I just didn’t know it. I have stayed in touch with this woman and have had a lovely conversation with her. The best part is that I have the opportunity to BLESS this family that has experienced such great loss. It was so great to tell her what a blessing it was to me to meet her that day. I was truly BLESSED to be a BLESSING. The moral of the story… what are you waiting for? The opportunity to bless others is always there, it just might not be obvious. Look for them in your daily routine… in the little things… you might be amazed at who and what God might put in your path! Monnie Miller

Ghormley Blessed to be a blessing
This year during our Mountain Meadow Christmas event we decided to have Christmas trees available for sale to support camper scholarships. This is the first year we have tried this so we didn’t order a large number of trees, not knowing how many would sell. We sold about half of the trees during the event so I decided to load up the rest and bring them to church to see if we could sell some more. People were very generous and we sold almost all of the remaining trees. As I was contemplating what to do with the rest, a member of our church approached me and said that they would buy any left over trees and that I was to find homes for the remaining trees. As a result of their generosity I was able to approach two different women that are residents of the apartment building right behind the church and inquire if they had a tree. They both said they didn’t have money to buy one but would love to have one. Upon hearing that I was willing to give them one free of charge as a gift of love, their eyes and faces brightened with surprise and then thankfulness. Several more trees were also made available to families that wouldn’t normally have one this past Christmas. In total, 26 beautiful trees were purchased and paid for while we made $572 for camper scholarships. We were also able to bless about 4 families with an unexpected blessing. Thank you Yakima First Presbyterian Church for passing on a blessing.
