The last week of November 2023 we said goodbye to a dear colleague, his incredible wife and partner in ministry, and their wonderful kids. Alex Rule resigned from his position with the church. He and Aurora have been a part of us, serving here, for nine years. When our friend Gustavo left to pastor Parker Heights Presbyterian Church Alex stepped in and guided the Gracia de Cristo (Cristo Vive) fellowship. With the formal joining together of Gracia de Cristo and Grace of Christ, Alex became a pastor to all of us.

Thank You Alex, Andrew, Ariana and Aurora Rule! Alex and Aurora demonstrated their love for Jesus in how they cared for us. I have rarely seen such genuine compassion and generosity. They entered into our struggles and stood with us. They cooked, taught, preached, welcomed, translated, built bridges and connections, organized soccer clinics, helped lead our summer Outreach Camp, encouraged us to involve ourselves further in the lives of the families, students, and staff at Adams Elementary. Whether you were a longtime friend, a first-time visitor, or someone passing through, they saw you, cared about you, and worked tirelessly to assist with your everyday needs. 2

BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND EASTER

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know — this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.” – Acts 2.22-24 ESV We always live between Christmas and Easter. Between God’s deliberate decision to enter our messy world and lives, and God’s deliberate demonstration of love and power. Early in January our house returns to normal (or our version of normal). Kathaleen de-decorates our Christmas tree, interior and exterior lights come down, cookie production slows down (no more overtime shifts), certain items purchased are returned to where they came from... and my thoughts turn to Easter. Easter 2024 arrives early, the last Sunday in March. What was it like for Jesus, from His earliest days, to know He was headed into the darkest and vilest of times. Christmas and Easter are inseparable. The first leads to the sec-

ond. The second is the result of the first! God is not only Emmanuel, the One who entered this world to be with US, He is also Savior, The Only Savior, who voluntarily gave up His life to offer us ours. We will never understand the meaning of Christmas without the miracle of Easter. We will never understand the power of Easter without the mystery of Christmas. In some sense, a very real sense, we are always living between the two. We are always, constantly, on our way to Eater, and then headed back again. For us there came a time and a place, a particular time and particular place, which human history, and humans’ hearts, had desperately, and unknowingly, longed for. When He arrived in Bethlehem His love was unleashed. When He rose from the dead outside Jerusalem His power was unleashed. Until He returns (and one day He will... clearly, forcefully, dramatically) we live between Christmas and Easter. Until He returns may you and I, may Grace of Christ, live out our Christian faith with both power and love.

OUR 2024 PREACHING SERIES AND WALK ACROSS THE ROOM... REVISITED

In mid-January we began a year-long study in the book of Acts. The book of Acts picks up where the book of Luke ended. Acts follows the Christian movement from the final days of Jesus, to a time decades later, where Christian faith was taking hold in cities and towns across the Roman Empire. How was that possible? How could a small group of under-educated, limited resource men and women (initially about 120) based in Jerusalem, proclaiming a Savior who had been executed by Rome, and they claimed was now alive again, capture the hearts and minds of tens, and then hundreds, of thousands. Lives were changed by the work of the Holy Spirit of God. Those first Christians, and those who came after them, took risks, and Walked Across Rooms.

Last September we spent four weeks focusing on the importance of “Walking Across Rooms”: sharing our Christian faith with others. Instead of being scary, awkward, and offensive, it can be exciting, natural, and respectful. Those who love Jesus must take risks, leave their circles of friends, their circles of comfort, and genuinely, honestly, walk across rooms, across grocery aisles, playgrounds, YMCA’s, offices, Garden Rooms, extend a hand, introduce themselves, and wait for the Holy Spirit to take the relationship further. All of this is done prayerfully, gently, compassionately, expectantly. We do not go farther than the Holy Spirit leads. We do not force conversations or situations. Our main responsibility is to listen for the prompting of the Holy Spirit. We feel no pressure, no guilt. The Holy Spirit is in charge. Walking Across Rooms, being in tune with God’s Spirit, is the primary way His Church grows, and lives are changed. It’s why the Kingdom of God reached the far corners of the Roman empire and eventually made its way to Yakima. 4

“Last week I read in the Times (NY Times) that in one single day – one 24-hour period – the ‘Deep Blue’ Website received 22 million hits. Twenty-two million! I must admit I was staggered by that. This is the thought that ran through my mind: What is the use of trying to preach sermons to little congregations in little churches, or even in big congregations in big churches that seat thousands of people? What is any of that compared to 22 million people logging on to just one site on the Internet in just one day? For a few minutes I felt very foolish and small. Then the Lord reminded me of the power of the Holy Spirit, and I was restored to confidence once more. How many people do you think were gathered in that room on the day of Pentecost? Thousands? Hundreds? Probably not more than a few dozen. But the Holy Spirit descended upon them.” (Curt’s note: This was written in the mid 1990’s. I’m not sure what ‘Deep Blue’ means. Currently Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok, are the five most visited websites. Google has billions of users each day.)

The Joy in Sound

The Sound of Bells

I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t like bells, specifically handbells. When I tell people I play bells, the usual comment is, “Oh! That’s one of my favorite parts of Christmas!” When I tell listeners how often we play, they usually exclaim that they associate bells with Christmas and Easter. Fortunately, bells are not members of the CEO club (Christmas and Easter Only). The sound of bells can be heard throughout the year. What is it about bells that can be so intriguing? As a ringer, it is the combination of physical and spiritual exercise.

Then there is the movement of the feet. In order to project musicality, the ringer needs to move. Push the sound out, pull it back in, make it feel light, make it feel heavy. Much of this can be done by moving one’s feet, as well as the body and arms. Lastly, I might mention breathing. As in choral music, breathing together is integral in ringing as a unit. We may not be exerting ourselves to the point of audible breath, but to time our “strokes” together, it is important to breathe together.

Spirituality Ringer Steps

I am often chastised when I comment on how many “steps” a ringer gets in rehearsal. If ringing correctly (making the “circle” with one’s arm), several thousand steps can be achieved in the hour (or hour and a half) rehearsal. As in weightlifting, more repetitions leads to a bell feeling heavier and heavier. In our recent rendition of “We Three Kings,” there are repeated notes that go on for quite a while. The arm sure gets tired! When one adds in playing the lower notes, which are considerably heavier bells, a ringer may opt to engage in a little weightlifting program to feel more comfortable playing in a lengthy rehearsal.

What about the “spirituality” of ringing bells? I can’t tell you the number of times myself, or fellow ringers, have come to rehearsal after a challenging day, or just feeling grumpy, and by the end of rehearsal we feel light and joyful. Creating music together, or even alone, is a type of prayer and meditation. This is especially evident as the music becomes more familiar and focus is made on the musicality of the piece. I can’t express enough the joy I felt recently when Bells of Grace rehearsed a piece for the first time with our pianist. The song could be played without piano accompaniment, but, oh, what depth the song had as bells and piano joined together! It gave us all goosebumps. It is this joy that we wish to bring to the listener, to add to the spiritual reflection during the worship service.

ACROSS THE ROAD

Just down the street from Grace of Christ, serving approximately 2,600 students, resides Davis High School. Although just blocks away from our church, the school encompasses a totally different and complex social structure. It is within these walls that an unassuming ministry is budding. Bibles – written both in the English and Spanish languages - are now placed upon the library shelves. And, these holy books are being welcomed by many of the students.

ACROSS THE TOWN

For over five years, a small group from Grace of Christ has been providing Camp Hope with a warm and nutritious dinner for approximately 200 people the first Thursday of each month. Most recently, with the assistance from Grace’s Mission Ministry Team, this group took on an additional request to bless Camp Hope with 25 shoe boxes filled to the brim with winter essentials and holiday treats.

“If just one student’s life is changed and comes to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ,” explains Donnie Ide who spearheaded the project for the Mission Ministry Team. “And, if they share their faith with another person... and that person shares their faith with another and on and on...” This mere act of donating to a school’s library may have untold impact upon generations. “Only God knows what a powerful impact in generations to come we have made by simply giving Bibles to Davis High School. Think of it!” Donnie reflects. Thank you, Grace of Christ.

“I was first approached by Linda Iasella from Holy Family (church), whom I knew from being involved with the 24/7 prayer team,” explains Mission Ministry Team member Betty Rosenkranz. “The Lord put it on my heart... and HE made it happen.” The Mission Ministry Team collected and purchased the items for the boxes that were accrued from a list provided from Camp Hope. The small group then wrapped the boxes in festive Christmas paper and took on the task of delivering the gifts to Camp Hope. While Betty’s small group is comprised of senior women, the delivery of the items turned into an infusion of multiple generations. Joining forces with another church in our town to fully stock a shipping container with gifts for Camp Hope clients proved to be rewarding for all.

Mission Ministry

ACROSS THE GLOBE

According to Monte Schilperoort, five congregants from Grace of Christ will travel this winter to the YWAM (Youth With A Mission) base located in Battambang, Cambodia. In mid-December, Eric and Nancy Gustafson left Yakima and were followed in January by Jean Schiewe, JoAnn McCarthy, and Monte Schilperoort.

This project includes the building and installation of rudimentary, yet highly functioning toilets. This basic hygienic need is something most people take for granted, but clearly is life-changing for human health and wellbeing.

Jean and JoAnn will utilize their teaching skills and will be helping in children’s ministries and tutoring at the YWAM base. Additionally, Monte – who has been in contact with a young couple named Sokhorn and Thera (who minister in several churches in the area) – will be working on a project that was locally generated by Sokhorn.

Youth With A Mission (YWAM) is an international volunteer movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and Christian traditions. According to their website, their purpose is simply to know God and to make Him known. This past year in June, Grace of Christ traveled to Kona, Hawaii, the sending base to YWAM missionaries around the world.

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s to hoping everyone had a great Christmas season. We know we did. Just to recap all of December: We didn’t have as many events this time around compared to the year before. But we did have the ones that are usually the best attended - The lighted parade and the cookie decorating. Each Wednesday after Thanksgiving was a special event. Starting on the 29th of November we had our Family night which was a total success. There were multiple families here that night and the “minute-to-win-it” games we had planned were such a blast. Each Wednesday after that went as follows; 6th we went caroling around the neighborhood including Mable Swan and Garden Village. On the 13th we had our Adams Giving Tree Wrapping Party with kids participating both the day before going shopping and the day after at the actual event. And finally, we wrapped up our year with our annual Christmas Party on the 20th. We had a great mix of students here; some that have been here forever, others that are new to our community, and even some old faces who haven’t been here in a good while. All in all, we are so blessed that the Lord has given us the volunteers and the staff that He has provided us so we can keep having events like this. Let me tell you, having the interns by our side to help with set-up and mingling helps with so much of the workload and we can’t thank them enough. Also, our volunteers: we can’t thank you guys enough for everything you do. Whether it’s the smallest thing like providing game props, to cooking our meals, to the biggest commitment in being on the front lines and being with our students. THANK YOU!

MISSION TRIP

Now to backtrack a little bit: During our family night in November, we met with our students’ parents to inform them of our plan for our First Mission trip since 2016. This Summer we are planning to go to the Warm Springs Reservation in Madras, Oregon, though Sacred Road Ministry. We will head out on June 29th and return July 6th. In order to participate, our students must fill out an application and be approved by our Mission’s Panel. Their applications are due January 31, 2024 and the final team will be selected and announced on February 14th 2024. The application does ask that the student commit to all the responsibilities that will come with this mission. This won’t be just a fun trip; no this is a Mission trip designed for mature Christians. It will be an intense week of service in many areas; with labor work in house repairs and service projects in the mornings, kids club in the afternoons, and overall spiritual challenges that come with being immersed in a different culture while sharing the gospel. That would be just the mission trip itself, they would also have to commit to attend at least 75% of the prep-meetings, six meetings total, and then make up those they have missed. Students aged 15-18 are invited to apply. Students aged 13-14 are welcome to apply if a parent/guardian of the same gender agrees to accompany them. Parent attendees to support young and mature applicants are welcomed! We hope this is an opportunity for the students to both reach out of their comfort zones but also have fun doing it. We are just so excited for this so we also ask for prayer, in planning, choosing, fundraising, and just the trip itself.

We kicked the new year off getting our youth group back together on Wednesday nights, with a game night on our first time back. Now February is a bit fuller, with Ash Wednesday and our High School Retreat.

High School Retreat | Feb 9-11 Camp Ghormley | Friday– Sunday We are headed to Camp Ghormley for our High School Retreat (Grades 9-12), the weekend of February 9th through the 11th with the theme of “Letting Go.” Ash Wednesday Dinner & Service | Wed, Feb 14 Garden Room & Sanctuary | 5:45pm / 6:30pm As we have done in the past, we will not have a youth group on Ash Wednesday, instead we will join the church for the Ash Wednesday dinner and service – dinner at 5:45pm in the Garden Room.

MARCH

March will be very chill and laid back with Wednesday services and Breakfast Club continuing as normal. There may be a paint night in the near future, more details coming.

ADAMS GIVING TREE RECAP

Thank you, Grace, for your generosity! With your donations of toys, money, blankets, and so much more, we were able to bless 250 students at Adams Elementary School with a Christmas gift and a warm fuzzy blanket. On the evening of December 14 many of our church family headed to Adams school for a celebration. Students and their families came to the school and were welcomed with Christmas carols, brownies & ice cream, Santa Claus, and they received their gift. Children were laughing, running around. Parents smiling and enjoying the singing. Santa took his spot by the Christmas tree, waiting to greet the kiddos. It was a festive evening, and it wouldn’t have been possible without your help. The staff at Adams appreciates it, too! It is always fun working alongside them, caring for the students. We are already looking forward to taking part in Giving Tree next Christmas!

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

2023 ended with our Preschool Christmas program! The children always amaze us with their passion, silliness, and joy. Whether we’re singing “Jingle Bells” or “Go Tell It on The Mountain”, the work our teachers put into our students is front and center. We are so privileged to share all our holiday traditions, from Santa and Rudolph to the true meaning of Christmas... Jesus! As we take a break to rest and enjoy this time with family and friends, we remember part of our memory verse for this month: He shall be called... our Prince of Peace! May His peace fill us up, so we don't take any moment for granted this season.

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION

Registration for 2024 is almost here! Do you know a family with a child ready to try school? Whether they are 3, 4, or almost 5, we’ve got a program for them! Share us with your neighbors. Watch for our posts on Facebook. We offer a quality Christian education, focused on early literacy, basic math, vocabulary building, and growing faith in our Savior Jesus. There’s no better start to school than that!

LOOKING AHEAD IN 2024

SPRING TEA – We have our annual Spring

Tea in April as a celebration of our parents, grandparents, and all those who volunteer with our preschool. HANGING BASKETS – Hanging Baskets will be on sale all of March and will arrive in time for Mother’s Day! They are gorgeous additions to patios and front porches, and they’ll last all summer long. FIELD TRIPS – We have several field trips planned this spring, including our trip to the mailbox, story time at the library, and possibly a visit from the fire department! THANK YOU! Thank you for your support in what we do here at the preschool. We hope that Grace of Christ preschool continues to build its legacy for many generations to come!

Baptisms BAPTISMS AT GRACE

On Sunday, November 26, we celebrated the baptisms of 14 people – infants to teenagers! Six young men from the Trailseeker program, asked their long-time leader Greg Nebeker if they could be baptized. We were honored to have Greg be a part of each of their immersion baptisms alongside Pastor Curt. It was also a very special baptism for several infants who come from generations of family who have been a part of First Pres/Grace of Christ. The morning was made even sweeter as we welcomed new families who witnessed Foster William Bacon their kiddos being baptized. What a joy seeing all the families, Parents: Billy & Holle children, and teenagers commit their lives to the Lord and Grandparents: Bruce & Rosanne proclaim before their church family that Jesus is their Savior. One Little Word HELLO GRACE FAMILIES! Happy 2024! In case you’re wondering, the very first thing I do when I wake up on January 1st — before getting my coffee, if you can imagine — is to ask the Lord for a word for the year. It begins with a short prayer, “Lord, what is your word for me this year?” Most often it is a word that doesn’t resonate with me. Sometimes it’s a word I don’t even like. But in listening prayer, whatever first comes to mind is usually from the Lord. A few years ago, I heard the word gray. I didn’t like that word at all. It sounded depressing, blah and hopeless. Yet a couple months later Melissa Gray resigned and I was asked to fill the position as Grace’s family and children’s director. I even began to see the beauty of the color when my house was painted a beautiful gray and my extreme ‘black and white’ opinions suddenly seemed to be less definite, less harsh, more like gray. This word changed my life. It even changed my character. For the better.

This year the word I heard was balance. I argued with God about the word gray, even telling Him I wanted a different word — telling Him to pick another one for me. However, even though I didn’t understand it, I knew the word gray was from Him. But this year I didn’t argue with Him. I want balance. And I look forward to hearing more of what He has to say. Thus, the yearlong dialogue about balance has begun. As a child, I asked a lot of questions. In fact, my nickname was ‘Twenty Questions.’ I think I annoyed the adults in 12

life with my constant barrage of inquiries. But there was a reason for my questions in a sometimes uncertain everyday life. I’m relieved that God doesn’t get annoyed at my questions, for it’s one of my favorite things to do. It is also one of my favorite things to teach children. Why? Because it is a lifeline. You can know about God, learn about God, and memorize His words, but intimately knowing God and having daily conversations with the God of the universe? Nothing is better. “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” — Jeremiah 33:3 God said He will answer. He is a good father who does not procrastinate or ignore; He answers us when we call to Him. God is always talking to His children. The word says His voice is like the sound of many waters (Rev. 1:15). He never stops moving, talking, inviting, encouraging. We, however, often don’t take the time to listen.

Family & Children’s Ministry A WORD FROM GOD

GraceKids kicked off 2024 by making collages and listening for a word from God. The children were supplied with various pictures and could pick whatever images brought them joy for their collage. When the collages were complete, every child prayed a short prayer and asked God for a word for their year. It always amazes me how quickly and easily children hear. Within minutes, every child heard a word. They didn’t question it, argue about it, or dismiss it as their own imaginations. They received it. It was a beautiful moment.

Here are some of the art collages along with God’s word for the year to that child.

After the children shared their words, I realized they had all heard a different word. I was encouraged by their excitement over our simple listening prayer activity and wrote their word on the collage they had made. Our scripture that day was from Philippians. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable— if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” — Philippians 4:8

I encourage parents to participate with their children in asking ‘God questions’ about their word.

Ask your children how this word makes them feel and why. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! When God speaks a word to us, it is always for a higher purpose. Dig in, investigate, dialogue, and help your children build and strengthen their communication with their Father. Help them connect with Jesus through conversation. GraceKids will be learning about the prophets this spring and the various methods God used to talk to them. This is an excellent opportunity to continue having these conversations at home. PALM SUNDAY AND EASTER SUNDAY

Palm Sunday – March 24 | Easter Sunday – March 31 In March we look forward to Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Looking toward Palm Sunday, the 24th, we see images of the donkey and the spreading of palm branches and cloaks as He enters Jerusalem. We see children in our church celebrating down the aisles with palm branches. We see Him in his suffering and in His resurrection, which we celebrate on the 31st. Stay tuned for more information as we prepare for these special celebrations.

NEW SIGN RECOMMENDATIONS Soon you will be noticing new signage in different areas around the Church. We are looking at what to put above the David Ferry Lounge. This is not a name change for the Lounge, but rather, something that embodies the various uses we have for this room. If you have a good idea for signage, please drop by the Welcome Center and let us know your idea. If your name is chosen, there will be a sweet treat for you.

HOSPITALITY MEETING

Wednesday | February 7 | 4:30pm | David Ferry Lounge If you are interested and would like to know more about what we do, we welcome you to join us at our regular meeting on February 7th, 4:30pm, in the David Ferry Lounge. The setting is casual and comfortable, and we will try to answer any questions you might have. Greeters and the Welcome Center need additional volunteers. Again, every little bit helps. At the end of November there was a joyous ceremony with multiple baptisms. If this interests you, please attend the February 7th meeting and learn how you can be a part of this. In addition, there is always room for help serving refreshments between services. May the Lord put on your heart where you might be able to serve.

Wednesday | February 14 | 5:15pm | Garden Room On Ash Wednesday, February 14th, the Hospitality team will serve a soup dinner at 5:15 pm in the Garden Room. Whether you volunteer or participate in the meal, we would love to see you there. 15
