What does it mean to follow Jesus?
As I write this article, I am at Mt. Angel Monastery, southeast of Portland. Several years back I was invited to join a group of Yakima Catholics and Protestants to spend three days praying, discussing Christian faith, and deepening our relationship with Jesus and each other.
One of the questions that surfaced this morning... What does it mean to follow Jesus?
It seemed like such an easy question when it was asked. But the answer proved more complex. We also concluded, and it was monk-confirmed, that following Jesus is the whole enchilada. Knowing all the right things, doing all the right things, even the right and good “church” things, isn’t enough. If what we know and do doesn’t flow out of a growing love for Jesus, we aren’t following Him. Following Jesus, because our love for Him is increasing, makes Christian faith the hardest, and easiest, of all faiths to live out.
ench
part is that God Himself gives us, when His Holy Spirit takes up residence inside us, the desire and power to do what we cannot do on our own. He turns our affections away from ourselves and begins the gradual, at first, redirection of our LOVE to Him and to others. We resist, He persists. We pull back, He draws closer. We fail, He forgives.

Following Jesus involves countless micro-decisions each day. It also includes a fair dose of medium to huge decisions. It means listening more to the voice of the Holy Spirit, seeking Him above all else, trusting Him even when there are no guarantees things will go as we intend or hope. Following Jesus requires that you “shall LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, “You shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself.” – Mark 12:28-34 (ESV)
LOVE God with all I am... and LOVE others as much as I love myself? That’s all? I can’t do that! I don’t even really want to do that. That’s why it’s so dang difficult, impossible. The easy

Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee. He saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew fishing. His invitation to them was simple and clear. “Follow me... Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” – Matthew 4:18-20 (ESV) What seemed so simple completely upended their lives. Peter (Andrew too) came to believe that following Jesus was worth it.
Peter wrote this to new Christians, “Though you have not seen Him (Jesus), you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:8-9 (ESV)
If following Jesus, being a Christian, was about rules, doing good, believing certain things, it might be difficult, but if we are graded on a curve we might squeak by. But following Jesus is all about LOVE. LOVING God, LOVING others. Easy. Impossible. God makes the impossible possible.
By God’s grace and power, you and I love and follow Jesus more today than yesterday, Curt
Faith, Sexuality & Gender Conference | October 21-22
This may be your first introduction to a conference that Grace, and other churches in Yakima, will be hosting at the end of October. The conference will be offered by a well-respected, much trusted, Christian organization, “The Center for Faith, Sexuality, and Gender.” I invite you to tour their website (www.centerforfaith.com).
Because the topics of sexuality and gender will be the main focus of this conference Some have raised important and legitimate questions:
Q1: Are we, as a church, changing how we understand God’s design for human sexuality and gender identity?
A: The answer is no.
Q2: Why are we taking the risk, by hosting this conference, of offending people who are very passionate on both ends of this issue?
A: We believe we cannot not speak about what is on the minds, and in the lives, of so many in our community and country. The Christian Church, Grace of Christ and others, must add its voice, the voice of both Truth and Grace, to this very real and difficult conversation.
How does God want us to respond?
As pastor I have had numerous conversations with friends in our church who have asked how they, as a Christian, should interact with a son or daughter, a grandchild, niece, nephew, neighbor, or child of a good friend, who is identifying, and living, at odds with the biblical understanding of sexuality and gender. What should we do? How does God want us to respond?
This conference will help us, and it will help all Christians, and those who are not Christian, in our city and valley. These topics may be controversial, but they will not go away. The tide is rising and a Christian voice, and response, is vital.
How do we hold on to what we believe to be true and at the same time speak and act with genuine love? How do we maintain healthy relationships with those who disagree with us, so that when God opens a door for further conversation, we have not shut that door? Do we truly value, and hear, those who have made choices at odds with what we believe God intends?
Jesus Christ is our only hope, and the only hope for every person we know and meet, no matter what they believe or how they have currently chosen to live their lives. Please plan to attend this important conference, and invite others, many others, to join you.
If you have questions or comments, please contact me: (curt@yakimagrace.com) 509.248.7940
Here’s what others say about Preston Sprinkle (who will leading this conference):
“Preston is one of the leading and trusted Christian voices when it comes to faith, sexuality, and gender. I wholeheartedly recommend that Christians learn from his work in this area.”
– Francis Chan, Pastor and Author
“As I have tried to navigate faithfully the issues of sexuality in our day...Preston does the best job I have found explaining the implications and applications of the Scriptures on these issues.”
– Matt Chandler, Pastor and Author
“God’s word and his truths never change, but cultures do. Living today in a culture that continually challenges historic church teachings on marriage and human sexuality, we need resources, teaching, and counsel that speak the truth in love for these times. This is what you’ll find at the Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender.”
– Karen Swallow Prior, Author and Professor
John Ortberg: “Soul Keeping: Caring for the Most Important Part of You”
John Ortberg (the author) recounted a conversation he had with Dallas Willard (USC Philosophy Professor, Christian author: 1935-2013)
“I asked him, ‘Why am I not happier, now that I’m getting to do what is in many ways a dream job?’ I asked him, ‘How can I have a private life that is flourishing no matter what my public self is doing?’
For that, Dallas said, we would have to talk about the care of the soul. I was afraid that topic would come up.
‘I work at a church where my job involves saving souls,’ I began. ‘But if someone asked me, I’d have a hard time saying exactly what a soul is. Is soul just a word religious people throw around?’ I wasn’t prepared for his answer.
‘Brother John, why is there such value and mystery to your existence? The really deep reason is because of this tiny, fragile, vulnerable, precious thing about you called your soul. You are not just a self; you are a soul. “The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” You’re a soul made by God, made for God, made to need God, which means you were not made to be self-sufficient.’”

TRAILSEEKERS – Student Spotlight
Arturo Ortiz grew up near Washington Middle School with his mother. He was the second youngest child in his family and has clear memories of the number of police cars that were in his neighborhood due to the influence of gangs. While in 3rd grade, he was introduced to our church through the ministry of Trailseekers.
From Trailseeker to Mentor
CWU Law Enforcement Student
Arturo graduated from Davis High School in 2023 and got scholarships to attend Central Washington University. His major is law enforcement and he hopes to join the police force when he graduates.
Thank You for Supporting Trailseekers!
Thank you for supporting Trailseekers! We are so grateful for the opportunity to partner with young men like Arturo and see the fruit from this ministry. Only the Lord knows how many young men’s lives have been changed throughout the years of outreach ministry at Grace of Christ!
Greg Nebeker recalls Arturo’s bright, energetic personality, as well as his eager smile and zest for life.
“He had a dynamic personality, and we knew he would succeed in life,” Greg said.
Arturo was involved for several years because “Al” picked him up after school. He enjoyed the program and was a fast learner about the Gospel. Arturo showed so much maturity that in his sophomore year he was asked to be a mentor at the Orca Encampment with Greg Nebeker.
Later, Arturo got involved at Madison House and befriended Gerardo Mendoza. Arturo was part of a team that started the Madison House Apple Company – a program that taught the young men to run a business. His younger brother Jesse is now involved every Monday at Grace with the Trailseekers program. Jesse is a loving and kind child and attends school at Adams Elementary.

The Mission of Sacred Road: Loving Our “First Neighbors”
About Sacred Road Ministries
Sacred Road Ministries is a church planting ministry moved into action by Isaiah 58, as God calls His people to minister to the needy and oppressed. All of our efforts are motivated by the message of the Gospel and spreading the good news of Christ. We currently have locations on the Yakama Reservation in Washington and the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon.
Goals of Sacred Road
Sacred Road was incorporated in February 2005, with a burden to love our “first neighbors.” Since then, the Lord has equipped the ministry to love our "first neighbors" by redeeming broken lives, restoring hope to the oppressed, and rebuilding the communities on both the Yakama and Warm Springs reservations.
Partnering with Sacred Road
We tell people that they can support our Ministry in many ways, but especially three: pray, give, come. Prayer and financial partnership are powerful! We would also love for you to come and see what is happening in our church and community! You can contact us to plan a visit, invite a staff member to share with your church, school, or small group, or serve with us on a short-term basis in multiple ways. You can sign up for our quarterly email newsletters and follow us on social media.
The goal of Sacred Road is to be a unified and growing community of believers who have a passion for God, for each other, and for the lost, and who are prepared and equipped to serve the Lord by ministering in the Indigenous communities of America and the world. We seek to raise up generations of leaders built-up through strong relationships, discipleship, and consistent service.

Grace of Christ Preschool
— Becca Mailand yakimagrace.com/preschoolPreschool is all about beginnings!
It’s a time of joy in preschool. We love seeing the spring flowers, playing outside, learning outside, and wrapping up the year with how much our students have grown! But it’s also a bit sad as we give a big graduation send off to our friends heading to kindergarten or new adventures. We become a close-knit family during our mornings together and it’s hard to say goodbye. Summer is also a time of welcoming new families and meeting future preschool graduates. Join us in praying for these kids and their families as they make the transition to our preschool. The newness never ends in preschool!
Preschool is the start of an adventure!
Graduation happened May 24. We saw 14 kids off to kindergarten to continue the adventure of learning for many, many years to come. Many of these students have been with us multiple years and we’ve seen them grow from an unsteady 3-year-old to an articulate, capable 5-year-old. Along with letters, numbers, shapes, and colors, we introduce God’s amazing love and grace to our students throughout the year. We’ve filled them up with the Fruit of the Spirit and they are ready to share that goodness, joy, peace, love, and faithfulness with the rest of the world!
Both of my boys came through here. I can’t believe in a few weeks we will be done with preschool. I love starting my day dropping him off and seeing him run to his teachers and friends. I know it’s safe for him and I love that both of my kids got their start here.”
– Preschool MomPreschool is a family experience!
I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with some families in the last few weeks and talk about their experiences here. I’m sure most people who’ve had children come through the program can relate
I could keep going with all the things these parents have said, but I think if you’re reading this, you probably have a similar story to tell. As we head towards summer, please keep referring us to friends and neighbors. We have space available for 2-Day or 3-Day Preschool and 5 Day PreK.
“This has been so great for my son. My other kids didn’t really do preschool, just daycare. We decided we wanted him to have a good start at a Christian school. You can tell the difference.”

Preschool Dad“It’s the end of another era! I went to preschool here too. I hope it’s around for my grandkids someday. Grace of Christ is such a special place!”

We are called to serve
SERVING AS A DEACON
Finally Saying, “Yes!”
My excuses for declining the opportunity to serve as a Deacon and what I learned the facts really were.
One: It’s too time consuming. I still work, have a family and hobbies. I just don’t have time to do everything that deacons do.
Steere Jean SchieweFacts: The Deacon Ministry is made up of a team of people who work, have a family and hobbies. I wasn’t expected to do it all. But when I could serve, I loved it! There comes a deep joy in serving alongside your fellow deacons to help others. My faith grew. I experienced a sense of purpose and belonging. I fell in love with my church and its people.
Two: I hate attending meetings. Deacons have a lot of meetings.
Facts: Deacons have nine meetings per year. They are only one hour long and include lunch! The meetings are informative, well organized, and timely. We have fun social get togethers in July, August and December.
Three: I’m not qualified. I don’t know what to do or say and I’m afraid I’ll mess things up.
Facts: Remember God calls those who are teachable. I was trained and supported until I became a competent, confident, and qualified member of the Ministry Team.
Three times I declined before finally saying “Yes.” What a waste of opportunity those excuses were. I have had the privilege of serving many wonderful years with the Deacon Ministry.
If you are approached to consider joining the Deacon Ministry, just say YES! And allow the Lord to handle the excuses. Gratefully, Peggy Steere
SERVING AS A DEACON
Part of My Faith Walk and a Source of Blessings
My husband Steve and I were first asked to serve as deacons in 1998. Our youngest child had just left for college and the timing seemed right to become involved in a new area of ministry.
At that time the job of a deacon was multi-faceted, including hospital visits, helping to conduct Friday night services at the Union Gospel Mission, serving meals after funerals, preparing for communion, and calling on those who were house-bound. We each found a niche in one or more of these areas and found a new group of delightful friends who had also accepted the call to serve. Though deacons are asked to serve for two years, they are able to “re-up” twice. We found that the work of the ministry suited us, and we served the maximum six years.
Fast forward almost twenty years and I found myself at a very different place in life. Steve had passed away, our children (and grandchildren) were grown and gone, and I was again asked to serve as a deacon. And again, God’s timing was just right, and I knew it was time to rejoin the team.
The responsibilities of the deacons had changed a bit - providing meals and hosting Celebrations of Life, preparing, and serving communion, and visiting (and/or sending cards or calling) our home bound parishioners - but the spirit of service was the same. And so was the opportunity to build friendships with the other deacons who answered the call. Being a deacon has been a very special part of my faith walk and I have received so much more than I’ve given. When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus said...
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... and love your neighbor as yourself.” –Matthew 22:37-39.
As deacons, we are given both the opportunity and the gift to put these verses into practice.
– Jean SchieweDeacons
SERVING AS A DEACON Leave the World Better Than You Found It
Ginger McIlvanieThe question was asked, “Why did you become a deacon?” The answer resonates over time, because I had been looking forward to a place of service after serving the needs of children and parents for fifty-three years in the classroom. There the privilege of serving was vibrant daily and at days end, I recounted its activities and thought about what made that day special. I always looked for the little things that may have made a difference in a child’s life.
The office of deacon was established in the early church in the New Testament. Deacons were commissioned to serve, especially food, to the widows and others in need. It comes from the Greek word “Diakonos” which means “servant.”
My mother always told me that I needed to leave a place better than I had found it, regardless of how great or small. As a deacon at Grace, the opportunity to serve abounds in
WOW FALL CLASS – EPHESIANS
SEPTEMBER 10 | 9:45AM | FIRESIDE ROOM
The Women Of the Word (WOW) fall class will begin September 10th and go through November 26th. All Grace women are invited to meet on Tuesday mornings from 9:45-11:00 in the Fireside Room for a time of fellowship, prayer, and study of God’s Word.
many ways, often unseen or recognized, and that is part of the job of being a servant.
As a new deacon, I’ve had the privilege of participating in the jobs we are commissioned to do such as serving communion, helping with Wednesday night dinners at Grace, assisting in the celebration of life receptions, and sending a ray of sunshine to those who are not able to attend church through cards and phone calls. Through each endeavor I’ve met marvelous people who know and love the Lord. There is always a place for a listening ear or prayer for those who suffer or just need support from even a stranger. When serving, one never counts the cost.
To you the folks at Grace, should God be nudging you to step out in faith and make a commitment to serving our Lord in this special way, we would love to hear from you. Thank you for allowing me to serve during this special time of retirement. An anonymous quote voices the importance of service as follows:
“When you help, you see life as weak, when you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as a whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of ego, and service the work of the soul.”
– Ginger McIllvanieOur LifeGuide Study for fall will be “EPHESIANS –Wholeness for a Broken World” and will be facilitated by a variety of leaders.
WOW women from the spring study encourage you to join them in September. They shared a few comments of why they enjoy attending WOW Bible studies.
“I Loved meeting and connecting with other ladies in the church”
“WOW is a bright spot in my week”
“Enjoy the variety and team of leaders”
“It is absolutely wonderful, encouraging, inspiring and challenging studying the Word together with other women.”
Come join us for the study of Ephesians and feel free to invite a friend or neighbor!
Class begins September 10th, 9:45– 11:00AM and questions can be directed to Donna Oliva or Donna Fuhlman.

I am excited to announce we will be doing Vacation Bible School this July. It is my heart’s desire to provide opportunities for children and families to connect with Jesus and with each other, and VBS does just that. Whether someone is dropping off a child for the first time or is a long time VBS volunteer, it seems every interaction, conversation, and experience at VBS oozes the fragrant aroma of Christ.
I remember when my family lived in Selah, and I used my lunch hour to pick up the boys from VBS. After the first day, I told my boss I needed to take longer lunches that week because I wanted to see the closing program each day. It wasn’t for the skits or music, but for the atmosphere. I was captivated by how it made me feel. It drew me in and was an invitation to grow closer to Jesus.
All-Hands On-Deck Event!
This is an all-hands-on deck event. And Church, we need you. Please say YES to volunteering at VBS this July! No matter what your gift-set is, I promise, there is a spot for you. Not only will you be a part of creating a loving, inviting atmosphere, you too, will be a recipient of the fragrant aroma of Christ as you share the love and hope of Jesus in practical ways. It may actually be a highlight of your summer! There’s nothing like seeing people fall in love with God. Please join us.
– SarahStudent Ministry
Summer is here... and we are looking at a very full season ahead of us. First we celebrate an increase in our numbers this Spring, which has been amazing! We thank God for our many volunteers who have dedicated themselves to the students of our congregation and community. We had a great time celebrating our Volunteers with an amazing luncheon in April. The students and interns put on an entertaining program. We hope those that came enjoyed it and laughed as much as we did.
Through the month of May, the high schoolers have been going through a series led by Amae Merrill (a long-time youth volunteer) on Identity. It is great to see how far the students have come from the beginning of the year to now. They have found the comfort and confidence to converse and to engage with all participants rather than just the friend they came with. To see what they retain each week, what sticks with them, and watch them realize that God is speaking to them is truly a privilege.
Recently we had two awesome youth events hosted at the Merrill’s home. A paint night which was very lovely and an exciting mystery dinner. These extracurricular events have helped us in our goal to create a safe and inclusive community within our ministry. These students, that don’t all go to the same schools, have built awesome friendships.
We are finishing our Envelope Challenge Fundraiser and we are so happy with how many people participated! We can’t thank our congregation enough for the contributions to send our students to camp. There is still time for students to sign up for camp. If you have not done so head over to the Ghormley camp website, CampGhormley.com. Middle school camp (6th-8th grade) is July 15–20 and Water ski camp (8th- 13th Grade) is July 21–25. These are the camps we will be attending.
We have a group of dedicated students who have been meeting for the last few months to get ready for our summer mission trip the beginning of July. They have been praying, getting to know each other as a group, and learning more about the culture they will be immersing themselves in for 8 days. We’ll be heading to Madras, Oregon, partnering with
Sacred Road Ministries and serving the Warm Springs Tribe. It will be an intensive week of service work, ministry, spiritual disciplines, and cultural awareness growth. Each morning we’ll have a quiet time of prayer and scripture followed by labor-oriented service work. Then we help with kid’s club in the afternoon. Ending each day with praises, devotion, debrief and prayer of the days experience.
We go to serve the people of the Warms Springs Reservation with the love God has for us which is completed only when we extend it to others. (1 John 4:12). We go and extend not only the love for the inner and eternal freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, but also the practical, everyday compassion for each other that is described in James 1 as one of the purest forms of true religion. Keep this group of students and adults’ chaperons in your prayers as we take on this task.
Since so many of our students have chosen to invest their time into the mission trip and two weeks of camp at Ghormley this Summer, we’ve decided not to host our traditional Wednesday night pool parties throughout the Summer. We will, however, still host our annual National Water Fight Day event at the Drollinger’s house on August 28th.
Something we’ll be adding to our youth program when school gets out is a Summer Club for middle schoolers that will run during the 9am service for the length of the Summer. Our high schoolers will be attending the main service as usual with their parents/guardians until Breakfast Club kicks off again in the Fall.
Family & Children’s Ministry
— Sarah Huck Family & Children's Ministry DirectorHello Grace Families!
Belize. Even saying the name of this country brings me joy. In fact, it has had a special place in my heart since I was a girl. I must have seen pictures of this paradise on MTV—the station I was forbidden to watch—but at my girlfriend’s house, rules were a bit different.
As I played with Barbies in my upstairs bedroom when I was young, my imagination came alive. The dolls’ names were Chrissy, Kristen, and Christine. It’s a wonder I didn’t name my daughter a Chris name! I’m not sure why I was obsessed with Chris names or Belize, but Belize was the place my Barbies always vacationed. I put all three in the pink Barbie Corvette and drove them to Belize. They loved it!
Several years ago, when I first traveled to Belize, within days, I knew I was “home.” I’d never had that feeling before, and I can’t put words to why I called it home. Maybe it was the beauty, the people, the atmosphere, the culture, the smell (Belize has an amazing smell!) the food, the nature of the island, but home is what it still is to me. In fact, Madonna even wrote a famous hit after her visit to San Pedro called La Isle Bonita!
This April, I had the blessing of journeying to my tropical home again. And it was wonderful. Traveling to Central America on my own felt empowering. I was not nervous yet exercised wise caution. And as soon as I stepped off the airplane in Belize City, the woman who greeted me on the tarmac said, “Welcome home!”
“Yes, I am,” I said. “Thank you.”
While Belize may feel more like where I belong on this earth than Yakima, as believers, we know our true home is not on earth. I love how Eugene Peterson says it in the Message translation of the Bible:
“So let’s go outside, where Jesus is, where the action isnot trying to be privileged insiders, but taking our share in the abuse of Jesus.
This “insider world” is not our home.
We have our eyes peeled for the City about to come. Let’s take our place outside with Jesus, no longer pouring out the sacrificial blood of animals but pouring out sacrificial praises from our lips to God in Jesus’ name.” – Hebrews 13:13-15
The City that is about to come: Heaven. A name that also brings me joy. It is our true home. My children often ask me what Heaven will be like. Ella is concerned about whether or not there will be unicorns; she MUST have unicorns in
Heaven. And Si? Well, Si is just the most perfect little boy. “Momma, all I want to know is if you will be with me in Heaven.” Sweetness.
Hebrews reminds us that this world is not our home. Sometimes I have to retell myself this truth. I can easily become enmeshed in the things of this world or emotionally attached to things that do not serve me well. I imagine getting two scans of my brain, one labeled “Sarah’s temporary perspective” and the other “Sarah’s eternal perspective.” What would they show? How would they be different?
I believe there would be a lot less stress, anxiety, and disappointment if I trained my mind to keep an eternal perspective. I think I would have more creative ideas, wiser thoughts, and bigger dreams.
Just as I could imagine being in Belize as a young girl, I think it is possible to get God’s eternal perspective on our daily lives. For example, what if I’m upset about a call from school about my child? I wonder how many opportunities he or she will miss out on because of this. I worry about what others will think. And then I ask God for His eternal perspective, and He reminds me there’s only one thing that matters – what my child does with Jesus. Yes, there may be details to figure out, but with the eternal perspective, I’ll have more peace, wisdom, and grace. Heaven on earth. My true home. Let’s give it a try. Believe.

COMPELLING LOVE... My Take Away
Robin Stuber recently taught a three-week class, Compelling Love, teaching us about God’s compelling love and challenging us to grow in learning to love large. Her heart’s desire is to see our church not only as a house of prayer, but also as a house of love. She invited us to think of God’s love as an
ocean we are to dwell in, leaving behind the “shore” of religion, politics, and opinions, and believing that God’s love is big enough to accomplish His will in our lives and in the lives of others.
Robin’s four main points were 1) to choose blessing over unforgiveness; 2) to dwell on the good rather than on fear; 3) to build our identity on God’s Word, on what He says about us, not on the results, such as how our kids or grandkids turn out; and 4) to live on the right side of the cross, remembering that the cross covers all sin, and Jesus paid it all for everyone. He is the Judge; our job is to love.
I found Robin’s teaching to be personal, inclusive, inviting, and challenging, since I have wrestled with unforgiveness (or incomplete forgiveness), fear, results, and being judgmental of others. Robin reminded us of Who God is and how much He loves each one He created, and encouraged us to move from judgment to intercession, praying for others from a place of humility, realizing that we are not better than the ones we tend to judge, because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). But Jesus redeems!

Hospitality
— Linda Mathews“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
ROMANS 12:10-13
Where to Begin?
Since I have only been writing for Grace Alive for a short time, I don’t always know where to begin. So, I begin by pestering Linda until I have scribbles everywhere. Then I pray, which I should have done before I started pestering Linda. Still, it is always fun to chat with her because we start laughing at ourselves for this or that and soon, we become more at ease and quite productive. (She really knows a lot.) It is always helpful to reach out to someone in the know when we are in a quandary. Thank you, Linda.
Our Mission
Since we are asking for volunteers to come alongside us and volunteer their time and energy to different teams and activities, it seems appropriate that we tell you what to expect of the positions and the teams we have to offer. I will focus on one team in each of the next several issues.
Refreshment Team
Our current team leader, Dave Whiteside, is ready to step down and pass this position to someone who is willing and excited to take it on. He would like to see this happen in the next few months but says this is flexible. The duties of this position include overseeing and supervising volunteers who prepare and serve coffee and water and organize cookies and other desserts onto platters that are served between Sunday morning services. Volunteers take on these duties for a month at a time, though there is flexibility in the event a volunteer needs to be absent during his/her scheduled month. Although this team has a wonderful group of volunteers who work together as a team, Dave indicates he would like to see additional volunteers in order to keep things running smoothly. We appreciate all of you who make this happen for us each Sunday morning. And we appreciate you, Dave, for all you do for this team.
Hospitality
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” – Colossians 3:12
Greeting Those Unfamiliar To Us
As a Hospitality Team, we often struggle with how to greet and help newcomers feel welcome when they come to our services. A while back I read something that stuck out to me about making people feel welcome at church. It focused on being intentional about saying hi to people we don’t yet know and encouraging other regular attendees to do the same. (Reminds me of Pastor Curt’s “Walk Across the Room” sermon series!) You can re-watch those sermons on our website – YakimaGrace.com.
Welcome to Grace
Thank you, Deb, for putting together the weekly WELCOME TO GRACE tri-fold brochure /bulletin. It is a wonderful combination of the Sunday morning bulletin and an update of upcoming events and information that you can see on a weekly basis. The HMT team is always looking for ways to keep communication open and information updated for the congregation, and you have done this beautifully. Thank you.
Other News Updates
We asked previously that you help us with a name to call the David Ferry Lounge, not to officially change the name, but something easy, yet meaningful to call it. We offered a prize for the chosen name. We did not come up with a new name, but rather, a suggestion to keep it as is. At this time, there is no plan to pursue it further.
The HMT is in the process of updating our Hospitality Team Roster, which currently has 145 people listed as members. Those of you listed will be hearing from us in the next few months. Please be thinking about whether or not you would like to stay with our team and about which part of HMT you would like to be involved in. Any amount of participation is most appreciated. If you do not hear from us and want to be involved, please contact Linda Mathews at 509-697-3013 or Cathy Campbell at 509-961-0775.
Thank you, Grace of Christ
I have been asked by a friend/volunteer with Love, Inc (Love in the Name of Christ), a mission our church supports, to pass on a big Thank You to everyone from Grace of Christwho attended their recent fundraiser. It was very successful. The show of support from Grace of Christ was plentiful and much appreciated.
“Let the Peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” – Colossians 3:15

Camp Ghormley
MOTHER DAUGHTER WEEKEND RECAP
We were so blessed to have 20 moms and daughters join us the weekend of April 26-28! Grace of Christ’s own Kara Brown, along with her mom, Barbara Lowe, led us in a weekend of worship and teaching from God’s Word. The theme for the weekend was the Love of God, with moms and their daughters taking time to learn more about God’s love for them, while also building their relationships with each other. Weekend attendees enjoyed games, a movie, crafts, a hike, riding the camp Zipline, and lots of great food!
Everyone commented on what a great weekend it was, with one mom writing to us after camp to say that the weekend was “life-changing” for her and her daughters. We are praising God for such a great weekend and can’t wait until next year’s camp!

FRIDAY
- SUNDAY | JUNE 14-16
This amazing camp has been going on for over 40 years! This year, local elementary students will have an opportunity to spend a weekend at Ghormley, playing in the great outdoors, hearing about God, and experiencing the love of Jesus. There will be plenty of excellent food, pool time, and lots of activities! This weekend can’t happen without your help! We need adult & teen volunteers who want to hang out with the kiddos. Contact Jeff Arkills or Kathaleen McFarland for more information.

Please connect with Carolyn Mason or Ericka Clark.
