A Message from Jack Peebles Senior Pastor Dear Church Family, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! God is good…all the time! 2009 has come to a close. Thanks to faithful giving by members and friends of this church family, we find ourselves in a great position going into 2010. Our mission statement demonstrates our continued commitment to fulfill God’s purpose. We are a family of faith committed to WORSHIPing God together, GROWing in Christ-like maturity, REACHing those unconnected to Jesus Christ, and IMPACTing our community and the world. In 2008, the various sermon series were born out of the missional church mandate to be OUTWARDLY FOCUSSED. In 2009, our mandate was to be INWARDLY STRONG, in terms of our relationship with God. With the continued emphasis on small group ministries, and development of men’s ministry to go with our vibrant women’s ministry, we have held to that mandate well. Many are striving to GROW in Christ-like maturity, and we have done our best to help facilitate that growth. I am especially excited about the new all-church Wednesday night program, called “RE3,” where we are encouraging the congregation to REplenish, REcharge, and REconnect! Many in the church family have taken advantage of this great opportunity, and they have come to be fed, both physically by the wonderful food provided and spiritually by the various classes offered. PRAISE BE TO GOD! There were several staff changes in 2009: we welcomed Jana Alderman as the Administrative Assistant to the Pastors, Laura Pickett as our Director of Family Ministries, and Don Hamrick as our Director of Worship. We look forward to 2010 with the arrival of Pastor Mark Tumney and his wife, Stephanie. Mark is anxious and excited about developing our ministry to families and missional outreach. I know you will enjoy getting to know both of them! There continues to be an emphasis on our children’s and youth ministry programs. My experience has been that churches that grow (in every sense of the word) are churches that hold children and youth as a priority. We have also cared for our seniors and home-centered parishioners. First Presbyterian Church is a place where people from all walks of life can come to be equipped to go and face their daily lives while being His witnesses to the ends of the earth! We have not neglected those in need. The designated giving above the mission budget was $261,597. In a year of economic uncertainty, that amount exceeds the previous year of 2008 by $32,856. Once again, PRAISE BE TO GOD! The work at the Madison House and trips to Cambodia, Mexico, New Orleans, and Egypt highlight our mission experiences. The Clothing Xchange, Spirit of Christmas Sale, Outreach Camp, and mission weekend with Dr. Darrell Guder were ways in which people were encouraged to live missionally! 2009 was filled with many reasons to offer thanks to God. I believe 2010 holds even more promise. I am calling 2010 the year of being “FAITHFULLY CONNECTED: Living and Loving Together.” Time and time again in his letters to the churches, the apostle Paul stresses the importance of living together as the “Body of Christ.” He also stresses how the family of faith extends far beyond the walls of individual churches. We are going to be “partnering” with other churches in several ways. Celebrating our 125th anniversary in 2010, we will have all church gatherings on the weekend of April 16 - 18, and we have invited our daughter churches, Westminster and Terrace Heights, to celebrate with us. We are partnering together with the other churches in the valley for CityFest. Luis Palau will be here in Yakima on July 16 -18 for a wonderful outreach opportunity. We will also be partnering with the churches in our presbytery to support a church in Egypt on the outskirts of Cairo that desperately needs a roof. Additionally, we will be developing a Ministry Master Plan to address the needs of the church over the next 3-5 years including, but not limited to, the areas of programming, staffing, and facilities. The Session and staff covet your prayers as we continue to be led by God in the path He has for us. The history of this church is that, in the words of Mark Koehler, faithful people have been blessed by a faithful God. We will continue to strive to be faithful to His calling. All the time…God is good! With much love and prayers,

A Message from Jim Erixson Associate Pastor of Congregational Care & Senior Ministries Dear Congregation, Another year has gone by and another is starting as I write this report. January 31, 2010 will mark eight years of Ministry for me at First Presbyterian Church. As I start my ninth year, I look forward to how God will use me to serve this congregation. I continue to learn how this community really cares for one another and that First Presbyterian is in the middle of it all as we step into the mission fields outside of the walls of our building. As I work with and care for this congregation these past eight years, I have found respect for the people of this congregation as they struggle through illnesses, financial hardships, and grief through the loss of their loved ones. My hospital visits have brought me closer to members who experience hard healing times after surgery and other ailments -- visits that became more connecting than ever before. I saw our Deacons touch lives in a meaningful way as they brought scripture to people from our church and to other Presbyterian Church members. Our contacts with Home Centered People, (i.e. shut-ins) have impacted their lives and the lives of our Deacons. As the Deacons worship with the homeless at the Union Gospel Mission, one can see that they bring God and Jesus to people who really need to hear the Gospel. Senior Adult Ministry continues to be very active. Under the leadership of Jerry Smith, the SAM planning committee took on a new challenge. They did various maintenance jobs around the church building every month before they met for their planning meeting. All of their projects enhanced our beautiful building Thank you! SAM had a full year, including Exercise for Seniors, Kaffee Klatsch, Happy Travelers, and the Veteran’s group, and we also added a few afternoon “old time movies” with popcorn. We held our sixth annual Veterans dinner, honoring our Veterans’ service to our country. Mr. Victor Nourani, Principal at Lewis and Clark Elementary School, was our speaker. Carenet continues to be a very important piece of First Presbyterian Church. We have 19 wonderful volunteers serving in this ministry. Their job is to keep in contact with our congregation by calling them once every three months, just to say that we care. Twelve other volunteers send birthday cards to church members and frequent attendees of First Presbyterian Church. As we move into 2010, I look forward with excitement as I continue serving First Presbyterian Church, as one of your Associate Pastors. In God’s loving service,

Gustavo Carvajal Pastor of Cristo Vive (Hispanic Ministries) Sum up a year of ministry in a page? …impossible! Nevertheless, here is our best effort; fire from the Spirit in the bullets below: • Joys and celebrations. We have welcomed new members, have continued to work on local mission projects, have explored mission opportunities overseas teaming-up with other Latino and Anglo churches in town (both Presbyterian and non Presbyterian). We have partnered with these churches to serve our city and are actively pursuing a major evangelistic/ service even for 2010. We welcomed six new members on Easter Sunday. The Christian Bilingual Preschool at the Madison House is scheduled to open later this year. It has been encouraging to see leaders, Ana Lucas-García and Cande Álvarez, take ownership of some of the four core service areas of our congregation: Win, Care, Train and Send. Our men’s small group held a great summer retreat and we also rejoiced and celebrated Cande Álvarez’s ordination as a deacon. • Goals that have been met in the past 12 months. Opportunities for worship, spiritual nourishment and spiritual growth have been provided, people have come to know God and people are sharing their faith with others. Discipleship includes Men’s biweekly small group meetings and a retreat, informal and formal training for leaders, adult classes, women monthly crafts meetings, monthly ministry celebrations, Vacation Bible School, Couples’ Nights, etc. A definite highlight is the fact that the pastor was able to take 7 weeks off (half a sabbatical) and things went on and kept on going. This has proven commitment from those in leadership to serve God by serving lovingly and wholeheartedly our congregation. • Professional Development. Five people attended the Pastoral Development Seminar organized by the Hispanic Congregational Enhancement Office of the General Assembly. This event offered lectures and workshops that have given our leaders a broader picture of Calvin’s footprint in the Presbyterian Church and in the western civilization. It also helped them make connections with other pastors and leaders nationwide. Two leaders attended the Bill Hybels Leadership Summit. • Goals set for the next 12 months. Continue to encourage and disciple those who have committed to spearhead and develop each one of our core values (Win, Care, Train and Send), equipping them to lead/serve well and stick to their short/long term goals. To open the Christian Preschool at the Madison House. Partner with First Presbyterian and West Presbyterian in a Living Waters for the World missions trip to Yotholin, Mexico and work on the roadmap to reach out to three key states in Mexico (Jalisco, Michoacan and Guerrero) through similar projects. Last, but actually the cherry topper, we will continue to team up with First Presbyterian and other churches to make the Luis Palau Season of Service and Weekend (July 17&18) a Great Kingdom of God - High Visibility/Lasting Impact event. Thank you for supporting our ministry! Together, being renewed by the Holy Spirit, we are coming to understand our role as Children of God. As a family of believers, we are called to bring the Light of the World to all people. We will witness the transformation of our beloved Yakima into a beacon of Salvation and Hope that will spread throughout Central Washington, our neighbor states and to the end of the world. May the name of God, our Father, Jesus our Lord and the Holy Spirit be worshiped and exalted on high!

Board of Deacons Report Co-Moderators, June Fessler and Kathy Wilcox The Board of Deacons’ work is ministering to the church family and extending the hand of fellowship to members of our congregation who are unable to access worship, communion and other activities of the Body. In addition, there are many occasions when deacons give testimony of the love of Christ to those who are unconnected to Jesus. As an ongoing witness of the compassion of Christ, deacons regularly visit homecentered parishioners and members who are hospitalized. Additionally, they set up and clean up communion for all three services each Sunday that communion is served to the congregation and at other specially designated times. Deacon teams take communion to individual home-centered parishioners who desire it. The ministry of hospitality through funeral and memorial receptions fills a need for grieving families and also provides a blessing to those serving in that ministry. Deacons also lead worship services on a quarterly basis for the guests of the Union Gospel Mission. They describe the services as an “awesome experience”. This year the deacons were also called on to fill a number of one-time needs for members of the congregation. Although our endeavors are most often directed toward confessing Christians, there are many non- believing observers who are blessed in the process. In 2009, the deacons continued to receive regular training to equip them for ministry. This year it was provided by Merle Smith, Maurie Harris, Joe Park and Pastor Steve Barker. A mentoring program was continued to specifically help new deacons develop the skills and knowledge needed to successfully complete their work. To increase communication in the church, a deacon attends each monthly Session meeting and a session member attends each Deacon meeting. This year, Joe Park, Clerk of the Session was invited to give us an overview of Presbyterian Church government and the role of session in that structure. In 2008 the deacons were charged by Session to develop a budget that specified how the deacons’ funds would be disbursed. In 2009, the deacons created a budget committee to monitor the disbursement of the deacons’ funds. The budget committee, headed by Pastor Jim Erixson, processes requests and suggestions for spending money from that fund. The first half of the year, $800 a month was budgeted for Interfaith Coalition. Beginning in July, a decision was made to divide this money between Love, Inc. (Love in the Name of Christ), Calvary Chapel and Sunrise Outreach Center; these are providers of services to the needy and homeless of Yakima. A special gift was made to Madison House this year, used to help in construction costs. In addition Bibles were purchased and made available to those who don’t have one. Easter lilies and poinsettias were purchased and given to home-centered parishioners.

DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY TEAM

Bill Starr, Parish Associate Careforce Lifekeys and Men’s Ministries Careforce Lifekeys 2009 saw many changes and new opportunities for Careforce as we took another step forward in the longer range plan for this growing ministry in our church, community and beyond. There have been changes happening within our parent organization in Australia as Allan Meyer decided to leave his position as senior pastor of the Careforce church in order to pursue his vision for Careforce Lifekeys ministry internationally on a full-time basis. This led to several important meetings throughout the year via e-mail, Skype and in person with Allan and his staff that have led to changes in our focus and over-all ministry. We have continued to offer two or more Careforce Lifekeys classes at our church, and regularly saw other churches in our area offering classes as well with growing interest. We are no longer taking on the responsibility for receiving and distributing orders for curriculum in the United States and Canada, as this is now being managed from Australia and a printer in San Francisco. This has freed Kandy Ingersoll to focus more of her time on developing and promoting opportunities for Careforce locally, and to train facilitators and leaders to support those programs. We are continuing to seek new and creative ways to partner with other ministries and organizations locally, including the Union Gospel Mission, Selah schools, Madison School, and other local agencies and churches. Kandy has done a great job of managing all of these details on behalf of the church and the Board as a self-sacrificing volunteer. What a great blessing she has been, along with many other volunteers who help make this ministry effective and vital! In October we partnered with the Men’s Ministries from Westminster to host a regional men’s conference with Allan Meyer speaking that was attended by over 120 men from all over the Northwest. At the same time we assisted the women of Westminster to host a women’s conference at that same weekend. We already have plans to expand those events as a single conference for men and women next Fall. While Allan was in the area he led another conference at Bethel Church in Kennewick, and was asked to teach and preach at Wabash Presbyterian Church in Auburn. This gives us hope for a continuing expansion of Careforce Lifekeys within our state and throughout the Northwest in the coming years.

Men’s Ministry Throughout 2009 there has been a growing interest in giving new life, vision and purpose for Men’s Ministry at First Presbyterian Church. It started with a commitment to have a vital ministry to men here, and a growing number of men getting involved in helping that happen. As a result, we have seen significant growth and ministry for men at First Presbyterian that we hope will transform the lives of many more men in the coming years. We began this new plan with an exciting banquet in March that packed the church gym with 240 men for a great evening of food, entertainment and a chance to hear from the new UW head football coach Steve Sarkesian and his inspirational testimony to the value of investing in young men. We also took that time to share our vision for the future ministry and mission of men’s ministry, which included our plans to invest ourselves in a partnership with the Union Gospel youth ministry at the old Madison School. We followed through with those plans and gathered men from our church and Westminster, along with many generous contractors and businessmen to begin a physical renovation of the school in order to house a ministry to redeem young lives for Christ. The highlight was a workday in May when around 80 men worked side-by-side to remove, repair and install new windows throughout the building, and set the stage for

painting, floor refurbishing and other physical improvements to the building that continued throughout the summer. It was an awesome experience to see all these men working together, sacrificially giving up their time to honor Christ and serve those in need within our own city. The other highlight of the year was our men’s conference in October that we co-sponsored with the men from Westminster and our Careforce ministry. We invited Allan Meyer to come and speak to men from all over the Northwest on the theme of reclaiming our design and calling on Christian men to take leadership within our families, church and community by living as Valiant Men with Christian character and conviction. We had over 120 men attend this two-day event, and are planning to use this to continue to build a sense of support and fellowship among men. As we look forward to the New Year, we are now involved in a process of building on the foundation of 2009 to deepen our own personal relationships with God and to reach out to more men with the transforming power of Christ and spiritual growth. This will involve us offering opportunities for men to participate in classes and small groups for spiritual teaching and nurturing that will go along with our desire to continue to provide other opportunities for fellowship and service. We are grateful for what God has already done among us in 2009, and are looking forward with anticipation to what He has in store for us in 2010 and beyond.

Kathy Eaton Children’s Ministry Director Our Children’s Ministry Department recognizes the immeasurable value of children. It is an awesome privilege to be called by God to minister to the 200 plus children who come through our doors. Thank you, FPC family, for making our ministry to children a priority in the life of our church. Your prayers, support, finances, and volunteering make it all possible. Sunday morning “KidZone” is taught by five different teams in age-appropriate classrooms. Dynamic storytellers, high powered drama, small groups and music all capture the attention and hearts of kids and encourages them to become devoted followers of Jesus. Bible learning becomes fun and memorable. Kids discover that they can talk to God through prayer. They learn that prayer is as simple as a conversation with a best friend . . . that God is powerful! I am so thankful for 65 committed volunteers who become a wonderful link to parents and children. Summer Vacation Bible School welcomed 380 children and 210 volunteers who spent a wonderful week at “Crocodile Dock.” The Child-Sized Christmas Services on December 13, 2009, “Christmas Hang-Ups” filled the sanctuary with church family, parents, and friends. Over 200 children singing, reciting scripture and special speaking parts captured the excitement of the birth of Baby Jesus. Reaching out and caring for others happened by sponsoring a Compassion child, supporting a local food bank, the Yakima Fire Department, Salvation Army Angel Tree Project, and Operation Christmas Child. Children are challenged all year long to share the good news of Jesus Christ with friends by inviting them to KidZone and other events. RE3 on Wednesday nights has given us the opportunity to minister to children middle week. Child care was offered for children five years and under and a children’s program for first through fifth grades. Our Childcare Department provides a fun, safe, and loving environment for infants and toddlers. Most FPC functions offer the option of this excellent service. A staff of 12 part time qualified workers serves faithfully on a rotating basis. Our Children’s Ministries Department staff includes: Michele Lenderman – (part time) Classroom Administrator Monnie Miller – Childcare Director Susie Woodin – Assistant Director Deb Wagner – (volunteer) KidZone Music Director Rhonda Cardona – Preschool Director I am so blessed to have the privilege of working with this extremely capable staff. I am looking forward to what the Lord will do through us in 2010. Pray for us as we follow the Lord’s leading in our own lives as well as in the lives of the children. May we always be reminded of the words of a favorite song, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so . . . . “ Children have participated more in Sunday worship services by reading the morning scripture, praying, and singing. It has been good for them to better understand what it means to serve and worship a great and mighty God. Gratefully, Kathy Eaton

Rhonda Cardona Director FPC Christian Preschool “Spreading God’s Word by reaching, promoting, supporting and influencing children, their families and the community.” We are celebrating 25 years of First Presbyterian Christian Preschool providing an excellent education that is Christ-centered. During this time the program has evolved into a valuable ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Yakima that is reaching and impacting many families throughout the Yakima Valley. It is exciting to see children of our alumni now coming to preschool! But why should parents send their child here? Children who are a part of this program become inwardly strong and build a strong foundation for learning throughout their life! Here at First Presbyterian Christian Preschool we help children to develop awareness and confidence in God’s love and power, to encourage a positive self-image, to develop confidence in abilities, to encourage the ability to function as a member of a larger group, to encourage the ability to resolve conflicts in a positive manner, and to develop positive attitudes towards learning. We began the 2009 school year at 100% capacity with a waiting list for each class. We closed the year of 2009 with 100% enrollment with a supportive wait-list for our four year old and pre-kindergarten classes as well. Of our 90 children that are enrolled this year, 21% of these families do not have a church home. Another 18% come from First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. This leaves 61% coming from churches throughout Yakima Valley. It is important to note that we have seen the number of families attending First Presbyterian grow through our preschool families. Many of the families are now listing First Presbyterian as their home church that previously listed “no church home” in previous years! Our program includes a physical education/gross motor curriculum for all ages. In addition, we have an extended day program “Kid’s Club” to help meet the needs of families. Each week our children also receive music classes. We have many extra programs and functions that bring many young families to our church including Thanksgiving Feasts, Family Advent Celebration, Christmas Program, Spring Tea Program, and End of the Year Picnics. The 2009 Christmas Program brought in over 500 people to our church. Each week the children attend a chapel time where they are taught what it means to worship God. This is a time where we pray, sing, and read God’s Word. Through our church family donations and donations from our preschool parents, each child receives a Preschooler’s Bible to have at home. In chapel each week a story is read from this Bible and a letter goes home to parents telling them what was read so they can reinforce the story with their child. In addition to the weekly chapel letter, families receive a monthly newsletter which includes information on opportunities and programs here at First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. The children who come through this program are well equipped to begin kindergarten. We receive numerous reports back from school districts stating that the children who have come to them from our preschool are far ahead of any other students entering kindergarten. The teaching staff we have are competent in early childhood education and bring not only high academics, but teach valuable social skills that lay their strong foundation for continued learning. Our staff includes four lead classroom teachers, and four assistant teachers. We have a Board of Directors with seven members who help with the direction and program of this outreach ministry. Our teaching staff includes: Abbie Alexander – Lead Teacher Channa Case – Assistant Teacher Becky Gruenberg – Higher Grounds Barista & Assistant Teacher Wanda Jones – Lead Teacher

Jenifer Knight – Assistant Teacher Mary Sundquist – Lead Teacher Barbara Toweill – Assistant Teacher Jessica Van Horn – Lead Teacher

Our Board members include: Heidi Bethel, Jen Trammell, Aleah Mickelson, Toni Thompson, Heidi Dobie, Kathy Eaton, and Susie Woodin. I consider our ability to offer scholarships to the families who would be unable to attend our preschool without this assistance, a tremendous accomplishment and blessing with long term effects on this community. At the beginning of the 2009 school year we made a plea to this congregation for the need of scholarship funds. At that time we only had enough funds to offer scholarships through the middle of the year, however with the generous gifts that were received combined with successful fund raising, we have just enough funds to continue the scholarship program through this school year. The recipient families are very grateful and so is the staff of the preschool. Your faithfulness to this program is commendable and thank you for helping us meet this challenge. The families that receive these scholarships are required to volunteer time back to the program. Children in our preschool program are invited and participate in many of the Children’s Ministry programs here at FPC. They join in giving shoeboxes for Samaritan Purse, plus many have begun attending KidZone on Sunday mornings. As the director of this school, I meet with the teachers each day to pray. We ask for God’s blessing and guidance to be given to the teachers, students, families, staff and members of this church. With God’s guidance and help, we know that this school will continue to be an impact and reach others for Christ. It is truly a joy and privilege to be able to serve God in this position. Thank you. Rhonda Cardona

Tyler Van Horn Director of Student Ministries Cambodia – In the Fall of 2008 we asked God if we should take a team of high school students to Cambodia for a mission trip. The answer came back “yes”, and this changed the whole year of 2009 for Student Ministry at First Presbyterian. For the 22 people, the trip cost just under $50,000, which meant we had to do a significant amount of fundraising. Also because we were traveling to a different culture to spread the word of God, we had to do a significant amount of preparation. God taught us about love, unity, and what Christ’s provision looks like in everyday life. We continue to ask that God would use the things we learned and the things we shared with the people of Cambodia to grow his kingdom. Confirmation Class – The other big difference in 2009 was the addition of a Confirmation Class for high school students. From January to April we had three groups study together the foundations of the Christian faith in a large group of 18, in small groups of about six, and during individual time of reflection. At the end of the class some students were baptized, some became members of the church, and all of them made public professions of faith. Wednesday Nights – In the Winter/Spring of 2009 we did the Mid High/Dinner with All Students/High School format for youth group. In the summer time we did Pool Parties at the Gustafson’s and the Hein’s for our youth group meetings. And in the fall of 2009 we changed the format to All Church Dinner/Mid High/High School format for Youth Group. Regardless of the form we used for our weekly gatherings with students our focus has been the same: Providing an atmosphere of grace so that students could build relationships with students, relationships with adult leaders, and all of us together relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We used games, swimming pools, funny videos, and food to help break the ice, and we studied scripture together to help us grow in a deeper understanding of Jesus. We studied the books of 1 Corinthians, the Gospel of John, and the Gospel of Matthew. We had an average of 27 middle school students and 38 high school students attend youth group. Sunday School –Each Sunday that we gather we worship God through prayer, music, offering, and studying scripture. In the Winter/Spring of 2009 we studied the Lord’s Prayer, Spiritual Gifts, and Testimonies. In the summer we did an extended look at Worship by using painting, drawing, and creating things out of clay and cookie dough. And in the Fall we studied the Parables in the Gospel of Matthew. The past three years we have not had Sunday school in the summer, but in 2009 we decided to bring summer Sunday school back because we wanted more time to connect with students. Our average Sunday School attendance for 2009 was 37 students. Special Events – On top of our weekly programs and small groups we also had some special events for students. We had 41 youth/adults go to Schweitzer Mountain for a retreat in January, 16 people to Ghormley for a High School weekend camp, 44 people for the Mid High lock-in in March, over a 100 people at our Cambodia Fundraiser in April, about 300 people at Easter breakfast, nine seniors and their families at our Senior Brunch, 22 people on the trip to Cambodia, 29 people for the water ski day at Rimrock in August, 52 people at our End of the Summer Party at the Drollinger’s, 18 people to Seattle for the Mariner’s trip in September, 15 people for our Trick-Or-Canned Food in October, 38 people for the Mid High Camp at Ghormley in November, and 40 people for our special service focused youth groups in December. We are so thankful for the resources we have to be able to do these things and we continue to pray that God uses all of this to bring us closer to each other and to Himself. Adult Leaders in 2009 – Karin Skone, Jessica Van Horn, Dave Whiteside, Leanne Antonio, Brent Alderman, Neal Springer, Erik Mickelson, Tika Melroy, Jeff Murray, Hudson Kang, Janet Krieger, Kathaleen McFarland, Joe Laurvick, Tyler Dougherty, Megan Antles, Ryan Clinkenbeard, Gwen Brown, Jill Skone, DJ Skone, Mark Norman, Eric and Nancy Gustafson.

Sherrie Leavitt MOPS Coordinator MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is a ministry that reaches out to mothers of children ranging from birth through kindergarten. MOPS International’s mission statement is: “MOPS International exists to encourage, equip and develop every mother of preschoolers to realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader in the name of Jesus Christ.” MOPS at First Presbyterian meets two times a month. Each meeting offers moms an opportunity to have a nurturing rest from their children, while those children are upstairs being loved on and taught about Jesus in our superb MOPPETS childcare program. During those two hours, moms are nurtured by entering into fellowship with other young moms… by befriending mentor moms who have the wisdom and experience to encourage them along the way… by guest speakers invited to speak on topics relevant to young mothers and their families… by a lending library full of good parenting and family resources… by being given access to our Encouragement Room for a chance to receive prayer or just a listening ear. Our overarching prayer and goal is that every moment of our time spent in MOPS will ultimately bring glory to Jesus Christ, with the consistent prayer that each mom entering through our doors would be drawn closer to Him. As MOPS enters its 12th year of ministry at First Presbyterian, we continue to minister to over 125 moms that come from varying backgrounds. Approximately 60% of our group attends First Presbyterian and other churches, and 40% does not attend church at all. This shows we are reaching out to those unconnected to a church and to Jesus Christ and that is awesome! MOPS is a tremendously effective way for First Presbyterian to reach outside its walls and meet the needs of young mothers and families in our community. Our mentor mom program continues to be a featured strength of our program. It is exciting to have such committed prayer warriors who are so willing to give of themselves to the younger generation in time, love, teaching and compassion. Our MOPPETS childcare program is supported by a great group of dedicated Christ-centered volunteers who give so freely of themselves to love on our children, teaching them about Jesus so consistently. We are tremendously supported by the childcare department, and could not do MOPS without it. We are also extremely blessed to receive financial support from our congregation and church leadership. The reality of having our financial needs mostly covered has meant that we have more time to pray for these young moms and create a meaningful atmosphere in which each mom has the opportunity to seek Jesus for herself. Our table for “Grandmothers of Preschoolers” continues to thrive in its 3rd year of existence. This table consists of a table leader, assistant, and Mentor mom and is open to Grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren. It is referred to as our “GOPS” table. This year it has been a strong support for women and will continue to grow. The annual MOPS National Convention was held in Nashville, TN in September 2009. We had nine women from our leadership represent our Ministry including a Mentor mom. Last year we also had nine attend. Having been one of those nine in attendance I can tell you that it was an awesome experience and I am looking forward to watching another group of women attend the Convention this year in August. As Coordinator, I will be graduating from MOPS this year which means I am currently training Julie Rottman to take over as Coordinator of MOPS beginning in May. It is bitter sweet for me, I will miss MOPS dearly but I know it will continue to thrive with the awesome leadership we have in place. I look forward to praying about what God has in store for me after MOPS and in the year ahead. We will continue our efforts to reach out to “every mom,” as we provide a special place for grandmothers of preschoolers, Spanish-speaking only moms (by having translators available), homeschooling moms, and

moms with children who have special needs. Our ministry has been able to serve these diverse groups of moms largely due to the servanthood of our congregation‌ so we thank you, First Presbyterian, for being such an amazingly supportive chartering ministry to our MOPS group! You are making an eternal difference in many young women’s lives! To God be the glory! Sherrie Leavitt MOPS Coordinator

FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY TEAM

Laura Pickett Director of Family Ministries 2009 can be summed up in one word: CHANGE. In May, Family Ministry director Norm Buckley left his role at First Presbyterian to pursue a new calling in his life to become a nurse. This created a natural opportunity to take a look at Family Ministry and to have a time of discernment for God’s leading and direction on how we minister to families. I came on board in August with the task of participating in the discernment process and helping to begin reshaping Family Ministry in anticipation of the new Associate Pastor of Families and Missional Outreach. Some of the most exciting developments in Family Ministry for 2009 are still in the defining and refining stages, and will take full shape after the arrival of Mark Tumney. These changes will be finalized, implemented and communicated in the coming months. With that said, here are some of the hi-lights for Family Ministry in 2009: Parenting Seminar – In February, very popular speakers Dave and Kelli Pritchard came and served as key note speakers at the MOPS Couples Valentine dinner and on Saturday they held a one day parenting workshop! Spring Dance – 80’s Themed Dance for couples. Family Camping Trip – Memorial Day Weekend 10 families spent the weekend camping and having fun together. Mount Adams Climb – In July almost 20 people participated in this mountain top experience. Pastor Jack rocked it! RE 3. In September, Wednesday night programming got kicked off! We offered a fall class called “Boundaries with Kids,” focused on helping parents to assist their children in taking responsibility for their own actions and choices. This winter we are offering a class for parents of adolescents or with children approaching adolescence called, “Running the Rapids” by Dr. Kevin Leman. First Friday Bistro – This is for the whole church family and has been a wonderful way that our church is connecting with one another for fun and to share a meal in one another’s homes. To date there are 15 groups meeting once a month. There are over 140 adults participating and an uncounted number of children, and new people keep coming. Praise God for this! Focus on Parenting Conference – In November we were the official host site in Yakima for this National Conference presented by Focus on the Family. The conference had first class speakers like Dr. Kevin Leman, Elisa Morgan, and Larry Fowler. The conference was a live simulcast event and we were the first ministry at First Presbyterian to utilize the technology our church has invested in to bring this kind of conference. The conference was excellent! Praise God. Mountain Meadow Christmas - A fun family time at Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp where families from First Presbyterian and around the Valley came and enjoyed caroling, gingerbread house decorating, trekking for their Christmas tree, and great company. It was a blessing to partner with Ghormley again in this wonderful event.

Judy Turner and Shan Trick Co-Directors of Group Life Ministry The culture of First Presbyterian Church has become small groups. Group Life ministry is not an appendage; it is not a program we tacked onto an existing structure, it is part of our lifestyle. We think groups. At First Presbyterian, when there’s a personal need or a church body need, its small groups that meet that need. We like to think of small groups as the hub of our church, for we believe that life change happens within the context of intentional relationships. God made us to crave relationships because He is a relational God.

Worshiping God Together:

• Group Life Ministry continues to worship God through testimonies of how our lives are changed through authentic relationships found in small groups. On a Sunday morning in June, we had a cardboard testimony time during all three services. The response was heartfelt.

Growing into Christ-like Maturity: Opportunities for discipleship

• Excellent curriculum is available through our church and also recommended on our website. • Groups have been encouraged to attend quarterly Group Life Dinners. This gives our folks an opportunity for teaching and hearing what God is doing within our church. • Monthly Leadership Development classes. We hear national speakers and also share our ideas and concerns with each other. • Many attended the Willow Creek Leadership Summit and Group Life conference, which is now available to us in Yakima through simulcast. Inspiring ideas were brought back to a brown bag luncheon with our church leaders. • Our Group Life Core Team assessed their gifts, passions and strengths and how they can better utilize what God has given them to help support and expand small groups.

Reaching Those Who are Unconnected to Jesus:

• Folks continue to hear the importance of praying for the “Open Chair” within their groups. When we pray for God to fill that chair, we tend to invite our friends to our small groups. • We had a “Bunko” night in the spring to provide a place for ladies to invite unchurched friends. • In August we had our First Annual Golf Scramble. First Presbyterian golfers had the opportunity to invite friends for fun and fellowship.

Impacting the Community and the World:

Many of our FPC service projects are organized through small groups. • 800 lunches were prepared for those participating in the Clothing Exchange. • Groups participated throughout the year in the Friday Night Live dinners for the homeless. • Groups connected with the Mabel Swan Retirement Home by delivering cookies, candy, notes of love, invitations to church services, etc. • Involvement with the Selah Food Bank, Veteran’s Standdown, YWCA, Heifer Project, Thanksgiving baskets, and Christmas dinners/gifts for families. • The Christmas Eve greeters and security numbers were at an all time high.

Shan Trick Women’s Ministry God has inspired women of First Presbyterian church to grow deeper with Him through worship, teaching, fellowship, and prayer. God comes to be among us in the presence of His Holy Spirit as we worship, pray and seek to follow Christ. Our goal is for women to become disciples; to follow Jesus, to walk with Him, to listen to His Spirit and to seek to live as He calls us to live. A team of seven members was formed in the spring of 2009. The God inspired name of our FPC Women’s Ministry is “WOW” (an acronym for Women of Wonder). The mission of “WOW” is to equip women to be intentional about their faith. We believe we need to be intentional about growing in our faith. God’s greatest desire is to meet us as we seek Him. Our spring Women’s Retreat was held March 6-8, 2009 in Leavenworth. The theme was “Encountering a Risen King” led by Robin Stuber. There were 190 women who attended this conference. Ladies lives were transformed as God answered prayers; there was emotional and physical healing, new revelation, and some committed their lives to Jesus for the first time, while others re-committed their lives to Jesus. On September 12 ,women were invited to a one day retreat at Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp. We were blessed by the ministry and music of Julie Hoy, a northwest native singer-songwriter. This retreat was an opportunity for women to reflect and renew. This Fall RE3 Wednesday night classes offered women an option to study from the book of Esther under Beth Moore’s video/book series “Esther: It’s Tough Being a Woman.” This interactive study was well received and life-changing for those who attended. Two groups of women meet on Tuesday mornings for weekly Bible studies. Ladies from various churches are gathering to get exceptional teaching from women of First Presbyterian Church. A monthly women’s devotional is available which highlights writings by women in our church family and provide a schedule of upcoming Women’s Ministry events. The “WOW” team, Kathy Bricel, Kathy Myers, Janet Krieger, Sara Holtzinger, Susie Bennett, Shan Trick, and Suzi Searl

SERVICE MINISTRY TEAM

Missions (Service Ministry Team) 2009 was an amazing year of impacting our community and the world for Jesus. As a Service Ministry Team we are humbled and grateful for the continual and growing outpouring of compassion and love for people next door and people around the world. Why would we individually or as a church offer up our money, our time, and our abilities, to help someone we Madison Youth House, Yakima don’t know on the other side of town, or someone we will never meet half way around the world? Why would we be willing to give up things we could buy in order to provide the basics of life for others? Why would we keep on serving and sacrificing when we are facing uncertain financial times and many others saying to hold on to what you have? The answer to these questions is rather easy, we are not simply trying to ease our conscience…instead we are learning how to respond generously and joyfully to the incredible gifts, and the deep love, of God our Creator. In 2009 we served and loved others in the name of Jesus in very practical ways. Here are a few examples: • Many thousands of dollars went to help people in the Yakima area with utility bills, rent assistance, food, gas for cars, clothing, and emergency housing. • Theresa Higbee and the Clothing XChange team offered two Saturdays (one in the spring, one in the fall) of free clothing. Hundreds and hundreds of men, women and children found good clean usable clothing for themselves and their families. In the fall, Group Life made and handed out over 400 sack lunches to folks who came to the Clothing XChange. • We supported Garth Gustafson and the Cambodia YWAM (Youth with a Mission) base in big ways both financially and with a summer Student Ministries mission team. We helped with scholarships for Cambodians being trained in Christian leadership. We also helped meet the needs of kids in a Cambodia orphanage. • We continued our long-time and substantial connection with Project Mercy in Ethiopia. We supported the hospital, the school, the farming ministry and the orphanage there. We also financially supported Dr. Tim Tuesink who is helping to combat the AIDS epidemic there. • We sent our fifth mission team to New Orleans. In partnership with the Canal Street Presbyterian Church we sent a team in the spring to work on two houses and the church. Cleaning, repairing, rebuilding and loving the people of New Orleans!

• Pastor Jack and six others from our church traveled with the Outreach Foundation to Egypt in March. They visited the Theological Seminary of Cairo and spent time learning about Egyptian Christians and how they minister to their Muslim neighbors.

• As a church we also worked with the homeless, the friendless, the hungry, with retired mission workers, those who need to hear about Jesus in Indonesia, in China, in Rural communities (Don Stuber with Young Life) and right in our own backyard (Union Gospel Mission, Calvary Rescue Mission, Yakima Homeless Network, Trail Seekers, Madison House, Love INC) and lots of individuals in immediate crisis. What a privilege to be a part of a church family that is eager and willing to love Jesus by loving and serving others! In 2010 we will involve ourselves in more and more lives, meet more and more real needs of real people, build homes, supply clean water, love kids, offer help to the broken, and extend the hope of Jesus to a hurting world.

A Message from Mark Washam Director Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp 2009 will unfortunately be remembered by many as the year of the economic downturn. Yes the economy affected us too, but God’s work continued unabated here on the meadow. Our summer theme revolved around our fascination with “superheroes”. We had a lot of fun with the idea but also were able to stress to campers that we too, as God’s children are given “supernatural abilities” called spiritual gifts. We are called to use these gifts as well as our natural talents, our passions, and experiences to discover the unique “SHAPE” God has given us, and how we are to use it for His glory. We were able to complete the new Ponderosa Lodge drain field just in time for our fall retreat groups. Praise God for His provision of funds and people to finish that essential project. We also were able to complete a total remodel of the boy’s side of the bath house. Women who have seen the improvement are jealous for their side to be done as well. Several new fences have been built as well as repairs to several broken water lines. As mentioned above, our year was a major challenge financially as many of our regular guest groups came with many fewer campers or had to cancel outright. Fortunately, the camp had some reserve funds to rely on and so we enter 2010 with no indebtedness. This next year will be another challenge so please keep us in your prayers. Highlights of our year in ministry include: • • • • • • • • • • • •

99 different guest groups hosted throughout the year. An outstanding summer staff of 25 college and high school students. Nine Ghormley programmed summer camps with 732 campers. 41 first time commitments to Christ during Outreach Camp. Celebration of our 70th anniversary and dedication of our memorial tree grove. 99 first time decisions for Christ during our summer camps 189 significant spiritual decisions made during our camps. Our first annual Father / Son Weekend. Untold numbers of spiritual blessings in and through the groups we serve. Completion of the Ponderosa Lodge drain field and Boy’s Bathhouse. Housing for all permanent staff within two miles of camp and the addition of an intern. A fantastic turnout for Mountain Meadow Christmas in December.

Thank you so much, to all of you who have given, volunteered or prayed for our ministry this year. Serving together to build His Kingdom, Mark Washam Executive Director

WORSHIP MINISTRY TEAM

Don Hamrick, Worship Ministry Hospitality - Headed by Diane Kearby & Yvonne Perotti

With over 150 volunteers participating in the hospitality ministry at First Presbyterian, we are engaged in greeting guests and members as they enter the church, serving coffee and cookies after each service. Our latte stand, “Higher Grounds” has continued to be quite popular. Through our ministry, we seek to achieve our purpose of reaching out to those “unconnected” to Christ or who may be looking for a church home. In so doing we are committed to introducing First Presbyterian as a warm and caring fellowship.

Ushers – Headed by Scott Henyan

The ushers at First Presbyterian offer a variety of important services to worshipers. As they greet all who come into the sanctuary with a warm hand and a service bulletin, they are at the ready to provide hearing devices, as needed and aid in seating. Other essential duties are the gathering of offering, reporting on attendance at all services, and offering yet another warm word as the participants leave our sanctuary. Our ushers are an important team as they provide another welcome face to our church. This year most of our team completed CPR and Emergency Defibrillator training as well.

The Connection Center – Headed by Dorothy and Merle Smith

Whether it is a question of locating a class, a meeting, or a service, the answers lie with this vital part of our team. Our loyal helpers at the Connection Center are there to provide information. They have schedules of upcoming events as well as all the resources to get you “connected”. They provide yet another warm welcome to all.

The Sanctuary Guild – Headed by Lu and Damon Smith

Whether it is a banner, liturgical pulpit cloth, or seasonal decorations for both the Garden Room or the Sanctuary, this group is our essential resource for adding color and focus to our calendar year. They share the responsibility with the Mary McLean Guild for the beautiful decorations throughout the church during the Christmas season.

Media – Headed by Debbie Kent

This vital ministry has continued to enhance our worship experience this past year. Their hard work is always on display and is our main hub of communication, both in our services as well as throughout the church. Their well organized efforts are a major facet of our overall worship experience here at First Presbyterian.

Sound – Headed by Dennis Miller

This is yet another vital part of our worship experience. As we have added a new sound system in our Sanctuary this year, we have greatly improved the delivery of sound and music enhancement of our worship services. We are working to continually improve this, another vital facet in our worship experience.

Drama

Our drama ministry has done very well this year to contribute to and enhance our worship experiences. This wonderful addition to our worship has been fostered by the long suffering effort of Megan Antles and Derek Smith. All who have participated have been well prepared and appreciated.

The Contemporary Worship Team – Headed by Dennis Miller, Interim Director

Our contemporary services have benefitted greatly by this dedicated group of folks who give generously of their time, each Sunday, to provide inspired worship leadership. As we have progressed through the year we have had the great opportunity to become accustomed to our new sound system and to adjust to new worship formats, providing a comfortable flow through our services. We continue to work toward better and better worship experiences.

Temple Choir – Headed by Don Hamrick, Worship Director (5/18/2009)

Our efforts to provide the very best in traditional worship are ongoing. We are experiencing growth in our ranks as well as excellence in our work. Our Carols and Candles service at Christmas was one of the best attended in recent years. We continue to be committed to prayerful support of our membership as well as the greater church. We look forward to working to provide our best in worship leadership.

Prayer Ministry – Headed by Donna and Jim Fuhlman

Our prayer ministry continues to work toward facilitating and nurturing our prayer vision into every area of ministry at First Presbyterian. We are committed to encourage and model worship and prayer both individually and corporately and to recruit and provide training for prayer and worship throughout First Presbyterian. This year we have formulated and had adopted by Session, our Guideline for Prayer Ministry, and Fundamentals of “What we believe about prayer at FPC”. This will be an important tool for us as we prepare for and continue this ministry.

Joann Benson, Baby Celebration Report 2009

The year 2009 was an exciting year of new beginnings. In January a total of six contacts were made to families with new babies. Our church family took part in baptisms and dedications of infants throughout the year with Baby Celebrations each of those Sundays. A special thank you goes to Vivian Dormaier, Marsha Lance, Lyla Elefson, Carolyn Henyan and Jan Silvers for their help with celebrations on Sundays. We were also excited this year to incorporate the Friday morning quilters with some new quilters in our church under the direction of Joann Benson. Approximately 36 new quilts were made this year for new babies, with many exciting new prints and patterns. We greatly appreciate donations from the Presbyterian Women’s Association and a donation in memory of Joey Mills which has helped us buy quilting supplies, as well as a donation of material for quilts. Thank you also goes to Lin Jones, LeeAnn Hughes, Kathy Mathison, Melody Marshall, Mary Harvey, Joyce Sager for their help with quilt making, and Donna Jean Johnston for her continued assistance and guidance.
