A Message from Jack Peebles Senior Pastor

Dear Church Family, We love…because He first loved us! We find ourselves at the beginning of 2011 and the Yakima Valley is feeling the effects of the economic recession. Thanks to sacrificial giving by members and friends of this church family and a $50,000 gift from our foundation, we find ourselves on even ground going into 2011. On behalf of the Session and staff, thank you! I know how many of you are struggling. As we prepare for this next year, the Session and its various ministry teams are going to be carefully looking over each ministry budget in the month of February to determine how we can recalibrate. I believe we have an opportunity before us: an opportunity to adjust and put our trust in Him. I am reminded of what Jesus did with five loaves and two fish. Inside this report are more than figures and numbers. These are real ways in which God’s love and His Kingdom are being shared in this community. We have not neglected those in need. In the midst of this tough year, the designated giving above the mission budget was $202,009. Praise God for this and again, thank you! Our mission statement demonstrates our continued commitment to fulfill God’s purpose. We are a family of faith committed to WORSHIPping God together, GROWing in Christ-like maturity, REACHing those unconnected to Jesus Christ, and IMPACTing our community and the world. I continue to believe that each of us is on a mission from God. To these ends, we are starting 2011 with the BLESS Challenge. It is so much more than a sermon series. We desire to be a faithful community where people discover and experience the transforming love of Jesus Christ, grow in their faith and dedication, and use their God-given talents and resources to help others experience God’s love. This is God’s mission for each of us. BLESS is a series of practices that I believe will help us collectively reach a new level and live a complete and balanced life in Christ. These practices are: 1. [B]e Aware 2. [L]isten to God 3. [E]at with Someone 4. [S]erve Someone 5. [S]tudy Scripture These actions are focus areas for us to apply God’s mission in our individual lives, on our campus, and throughout the community and world. I have asked all of our program staff members and elders who oversee our ministry teams to participate in this series by creating opportunities to help members and friends of the congregation to put these practices into action. These are, after all, things that each of us can do every day. How will you and even your small group participate in the BLESS challenge? Moving into 2011, I do want to let you know that the Session is going to solicit input from parents so that we can determine the needs for children’s ministry. We want you to help us by telling us the needs of your children. I am also excited that our worship search team is progressing as they pursue the individuals that God has chosen to help lead our worship through music. Although we have had to be a church in transition as various staff changes have occurred, I believe First Presbyterian Church is a place where people from all walks of life can come to be equipped to go and face their daily lives while being His witnesses to the ends of the earth through acts of love and compassion. Please take a moment and look through this annual report. See the various ways in which we are joining with Him and His Kingdom as it more and more becomes a reality here on earth. Because He first loved us…we love!

A Message from Pastor Mark Tumney, Associate Pastor to Families and Missional Outreach Dear Church Family, I’ll always remember this year as the year our son Becket was born. After a challenging miscarriage two years ago, Stephanie and I have been very blessed by his birth. Moreover, we have been very blessed to be a part of this wonderful congregation. This past year I have seen God do many, many other wonderful things in and through our church. Outside my door hangs the placard “Pastor of Families and Mission,” but I also help with discipleship and this past year I have also been asked to help with our contemporary worship services. So, I’ll comment mostly on these areas. Mission: This past year our church has continued to explore the reality that no longer does the mission field exist exclusively overseas (if it ever did), it also exists within our own neighborhoods. Our session, deacons and staff all went through a 7 part training program on how our church might better reach those who need Christ in a post-Christian culture. It’s been exciting to watch our church wrestle with the question of how to reach this next generation for Christ in a challenging, shifting world. In addition to these new emphases, we continue to boldly support our existing overseas and local mission efforts. For example, even in this challenging economy, this past year we raised over $200,000 above our designated missions budget of $80,000 to support our missionaries. Praise God! Family Ministry: This past year our student, children, and family staff recognized something odd: Sunday mornings were one of the most segregated hours of the week for families. While we are all in the same building together on Sundays, families shared few spiritual experiences together. Not only does this fall short of God’s vision for families (see Deut 6:1-25), it keeps kids from modeling after their most significant spiritual leaders— their parents. Subsequently, our family, student and children ministry staff all worked together an effort to help “Fuse” families and help parents in their role as their children’s primary spiritual care-givers. 15 families went through a pilot program that was very successful and will be launched formally this February. Some of the things we did together were the intergenerational Ghormley Church Round-up, a workshop helping parents to have family devotions, building advent wreaths together, and caroling at Mabel Swan. We’re very excited about what lies just around the bend. Discipleship: We have continued to offer some wonderful classes to help people grow in their faith, both on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. It’s been encouraging to see the range of topics from Bible themed classes to topical studies. One exciting development with our discipleship team is the growing question of how me might help people take “next steps” of faith with Jesus. More to come. Worship: After Dennis Miller stepped down in March, our worship team asked me to help lead the contemporary services on an interim basis. I’m fond of telling people that we have incredible musicians on our worship team— they’re good enough to even make me sound good. More than their abilities, their love of Christ and their heart for worship—of both our musicians and our incredible tech team--is what really makes our Sunday gatherings a blessing. Our next worship leader will have the privilege of working with some great people. Professionally: I continue to work on my doctorate at Fuller Theological Seminary, concentrating mostly in the Missional Church. Again, I have seen God do wonderful things this past year—much of which has been foundation building. I’m excited to see what He will continue to do in this next year.

A Message from Jim Erixson, Associate Pastor of Congregational Care & Senior Ministries Dear Church Family, This year has been a year full of challenges within our families and community. The economic situation in this country has hit our valley so there are a lot of people in need. We have experienced many people coming into the church looking for assistance. We have found a surge of requests from Love INC. (Love in the name of Christ, our local clearing house to help those in need), and others who come to our door looking for help. The Deacon’s Fund has been a caring arm of this church. This year we have given over $11,000 dollars to 42 different families in our community. As a result we also experienced three families who are now attending First Presbyterian on a regular basis, and are looking to become members of our church family. Carenet has been a very important ministry at First Presbyterian. This ministry is the link between the staff and the congregation. The ministry consists of 15 callers who reach over 450 families in a two month period. You can say they become the pastor’s ear that helps the pastor to understand what is going on in the lives of our congregation. We also have 17 people who have the privilege of wishing all the congregation members a happy birthday. They send out birthday cards, wishing everyone a happy birthday. If you haven’t received a birthday card from us please let me know. I don’t want anyone to fall between the “cracks”. Senior Adults have been very active this year planning and providing activities for everyone over 55 who wish to be involved. Exercise classes are available every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings which are especially designed for older adults. Happy Travelers didn’t travel a great distance this year, but we did see a lot of interesting sites within the city. We visited the Super Cub Airplane manufacture, Perry Tech facilities, Whistlin’ Jack, and other interesting venues. The highlight of the year was when we teamed with some Small Groups, Senior Adults and the Deacons and provided a Thanksgiving lunch across the street at Mable Swan Manor. The Senior Adults held our 7th annual Veterans’ Day dinner. There were over 80 people attending, hearing the experiences of our naval men at Farragut Naval Training Center during WWII. January 31, 2011 will make the end of my ninth year at First Presbyterian Church Yakima. As I start my tenth year, I pray for good health and ask God for what is in store this coming year. Whatever it may be I trust it will be with God’s blessing. Thank you all for making my life at First Presbyterian memorable; know that the love of family is with us. In God’s love and blessed service,

There is more to say or report, but perhaps a short story will catch the essence of what has happened this year. A mother, seeking a healthier environment for her six children, moves from south east United States to Yakima in late 2010. Her oldest is 14 and her youngest is 6 weeks old. They stay with a relative and at night, they all share the floor and couch in their relative’s living room. It is 12:45 a.m. January 1st 2011. It’s the closing corporate prayer time of our New Years Eve Prayer Vigil, and as we pray, the mom, with tears in her eyes thanks God for her Christian family and the warm support and loving embrace they have found in them. To God be the Glory! Thank you First Presbyterian Church for your love and support for the Latino community in Yakima! Together, we are building God’s kingdom in a City and in a Valley that is being transformed by the Glorious presence of Christ in our midst. “May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Thes.5:23 (NRS)

Board of Deacons REACHING those unconnected to Jesus and together WORSHIPING…. The work of the Board of Deacons is to minister to the church family and extend the hand of fellowship to members of our congregation who are unable to access worship, communion and other activities of the Body. Deacons also give testimony of the love of Christ to those unconnected to Jesus, by their words and actions. Deacons regularly visit home-centered parishioners and members who are hospitalized. Because of a change in procedure at Memorial Hospital, it has been difficult to know who is hospitalized so that we can visit them. Pastor Jim continues to work toward a resolution of this problem. Deacon teams take communion to home- centered parishioners who desire it. In addition, approval has been given for Deacons to serve communion at the jail where we have an ongoing ministry. The ministry of hospitality serving at funeral and memorial receptions answers a need for grieving families and is a blessing to those Deacons serving in that ministry. Deacons also lead worship services quarterly for the men and women staying at the Union Gospel Mission. The lives of many non-believers are touched through these two ministries. GROWING in Christ-like maturity…… The Board of Deacons continues to use mentors to come alongside new Deacons. This ensures a smooth transition into the role of Deacon and provides the skills necessary for them to be successful in their new role. To facilitate communication in the leadership, a deacon attends each monthly Session meeting and a session member attends each Deacon meeting. Two deacons also serve on the church Nominating Committee. In February, Rev. Jerry Spitzer provided training for a retreat attended by both Session members and Deacons. In March, the Deacons held a potluck and retreat to address the questions of how we could better serve the church and community, and what we as Deacons need personally to help us fulfill our role. The result was our primary goal of finding more and better ways to reach out to visitors to our church. Deacons held a mid-summer picnic as a means of touching base during the summer months. During late summer and early fall, a video series, The Present Future by Reggie McNeal, was presented for Deacons and Session members in preparation for a new direction for our church. IMPACTING our community and world….. In July, Deacons acted as counselors for the Luis Palau City Fest and provided brunch for the follow-up for new believers. In 2010, the Deacons received an income of $12,014 from offerings, $605 from memorials and $253 from other sources. We contributed a total of $15, 469 to the following: Sonrise Outreach, Love, Inc., Calvary Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity and Madison House. Deacons continue to provide Bibles to those who need one and The Common Book of Prayer for Deacons to use in their ministry. At Christmas, we purchase poinsettias for our homecentered parishioners. Training for our new class of Deacons occurs January 8, 2011. This will bring our number to 42, the largest Deacon class yet. It should be noted that this year we have added three Hispanic speaking Deacons who will serve the congregation of Cristo Vivé.

June Fessler & Kathy Wilcox.

Annual Report for Family Ministries Fusing families together for Christ and His mission Focus of program: Assist parents to raise Godly children in an increasingly Godless society. This was achieved by community building and study in our respective age groups, by bringing everyone together for family activities and service projects and a time for parents and their children to meet together to have a devotion time together. Testimonies “My family and I had the opportunity to shine the light to a stranger whom was a person we would not normally acknowledge. It was also an opportunity for us, as parents, to model how to shine the light to a stranger to our children.” “Since my husband and I have only an infant son, we found ourselves without family companions to share our thoughts with. Luckily for us, we spotted two young people in a similar situation. They were willing to sit with us and actively participate in the devotions. We were so impressed by their insight, compassion, and empathy for children around the world who have fewer material privileges than we do. Additionally, we had fun learning about each other’s lives and interests outside of church. We are excited to see the two of them again on Sundays and at future FUSE events!” “Ghormley Church Family Round Up was the best intergenerational activity First Pres. has ever done. It’s a great place to bring friends young and older.” These were comments from pilot group evaluating the program: “Really appreciated the activities we did as a family.” “The intergenerational events were the best. Getting to know and interact with many people from our congregation who we wouldn’t have otherwise met.” “We felt connected once again to the church and with couples in our same season of life.” Activities from Fuse: Ghormley Church Family Round up: The congregation was invited to Camp Ghormley on Sunday, October 3rd for some good old fashioned play time. Around 300 people of multiple generations participated in traditional Ghormley activities, picnic games, a square dance topped off by a wonderful BBQ on the meadow. Pumpkin Carving: On Sunday, October 31st Fuse families participated in a devotion time centered around the metaphor of a Jack’O Lantern from a Christ centered perspective where God came to take on our yuck and replace it with the light that shines for all to see what Christ looks like through us. After Tyler Van Horn’s devotion, we enjoyed carving and decorating our own pumpkins donated by 2 local farms. Operation Christmas Child: This was an opportunity for the church body to come together to not only assemble shoe box Christmas gifts for the children across the country, but to spend time pray together for each box sent. There was also a time of reflection asking each child to think about “what life would be like if”….putting themselves in the shoes of the children in far away lands. Advent Wreath Building: This was a fun time with family to build an Advent wreath while listening and participating in devotions. Each family also received an Advent devotion book to take home. Mountain Meadow Christmas: Family Ministries partnered with Camp Ghormley to bring the sights and sounds of Christmas to families at FPC. Activities included crafts, sledding, ginger bread house building, cookie decorating, and socializing. Camp Ghormley provided fun for families for the entire weekend or just for the day. A Missions Scavenger Hunt: Student Ministries organized this activity for families to go on a scavenger hunt and learn about missionaries currently supported by FPC. Each team was instructed to talk to a missionary and learn a few facts about that country. The groups then came back together to talk about life as a missionary and a few fun facts about each country.

Men’s Ministry Bill Starr, Parish Associate

2010 has been a growing year for Men’s Ministry at First Presbyterian Church as we continued to build and deepen our commitment to have a vital ministry to men at First Presbyterian Church. Even though this year didn’t include any big events or conferences, we attempted to build our ministry on deepening our connections with God and one another through a variety of small groups that have continued or were added throughout the year. In addition we started a new “Men’s Class” on Wednesday nights which includes both the dynamics of a class and a fellowship group for men, which was taught by myself, Tim Brown, Roger Bennett and Don Stuber. Along with that “Journey Inward” we also continued our “Journey Outward” through our active role in the ongoing ministry at the Union Gospel’s youth ministry at the old Madison School. This year we adopted a new set of building and remodeling projects as a part of the City Fest Season of Service, and had several men’s groups and individual men actively participate in painting, fixing windows, repairing and remodeling the basement facilities and putting final touches on the Sports Court transformation of the former parking lot. This not only made a huge improvement in the facilities that will allow for more opportunities for kids to be involved in their programs, but also gave us a chance to bond with each other as we put some sweat equity into these projects in the Spring and Summer. This culminated in our participation in the Christmas Celebration at the school on December 20th, where we helped share gifts and the gospel with over 1,500 kids and family members who participated throughout the day. There are new opportunities coming up for Men’s Ministry in the coming year, including the continuing of our Wednesday night Men’s Class, men’s small groups and opportunities for service to the church and community. We also are hoping to start a Men’s Night Out fun outreach event on a quarterly basis, and looking ahead to possible banquet speakers for later in the year. This ministry is fueled by the Spirit of God and the vision of the men at FPC. We welcome your interest and ideas, and would love to have other men be involved in continuing to build this ministry in the months and years ahead.

Women’s Ministry “Growing women up to be intentional about their faith.â€? God continues to inspire women of First Presbyterian Church to grow deeper with Him through worship, teaching, fellowship, and prayer. Our goal is for women to become disciples; to follow Jesus, to walk with Him, to listen to His Spirit and to seek to live as He calls us to live. The women’s ministry team formed in the spring of 2009 and continues to be in awe of how God is faithful as we look back on an awesome year of ministry. Women’s Event: Prayer Mosaic: The overall goal was to allow the participants to ‘experience’ prayer and the Lord through the disciplines and traditions of the church‌offering confession, intercession, communion, silence, and solitude. We participated in various elements of prayer in order to experience God’s heart. Prayer team for spring Clothing X-change: Women’s ministry partnered with the Clothing X-change ministry to offer prayer for people who desired to be prayed for as well as to be personal shoppers and help with the refreshment table. There were testimonies at the end of the day of people who did open up to receive prayer. Summer Outreach: A group of women from the Holy Spirit Boot camp summer class met some of the ladies from Young Lives program, which is an outreach to young moms for a picnic dinner at Franklin Park. We enjoyed spending time getting to know the teen Mom’s and their mentors for a time of prayer, and sharing. Outreach with encouragement!

Children’s Ministry Kathy Eaton, Director Our Children’s Ministry Department recognizes the immeasurable value of children. It is an awesome privilege to be called by God to minister to the 200 plus children who come through our doors. Thank you, FPC family, for making our ministry to children a priority in the life of our church. Your prayers, support, finances, and volunteering make it all possible. Sunday morning “KidZone” is taught by five different teams in age-appropriate classrooms. Dynamic storytellers, high powered drama, small groups and music all capture the attention and hearts of kids and encourages them to become devoted followers of Jesus. Bible learning becomes fun and memorable. Kids discover that they can talk to God through prayer. They learn that prayer is as simple as a conversation with a best friend . . . that God is powerful! I am so thankful for 65 committed volunteers who become a wonderful link to parents and children. This year the KidZone format changed by having children attending the beginning of the 9:30 worship service with their parents or leaders. Following the children's message, kids were excused to attend Kidzone. This change was well received. Summer Vacation Bible School welcomed 380 children and 210 volunteers who spent a wonderful week at “High Seas Expedition.” The Child-Sized Christmas Services on December 12, 2010, “From Our Herd to Your Herd” filled the sanctuary with church family, parents, and friends. Over 200 children singing, reciting scripture and special speaking parts captured the excitement of the birth of Baby Jesus. Our five cowboy leads included Derek Smith, Roger Bennett, Steve Hilmes, Mark Watson, and our own Senior Pastor Jack Peebles. Reaching out and caring for others happened by sponsoring a Compassion child, supporting a local food bank, the Yakima Fire Department, Salvation Army Angel Tree Project, and Operation Christmas Child. We had the privilege of adopting a family for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Children are challenged all year long to share the good news of Jesus Christ with friends by inviting them to KidZone and other events. Children are also very active in donating food products for the local food banks. RE3 on Wednesday nights has given us the opportunity to minister to children middle week. Child care was offered for children five years and under and a children’s program for first through fifth grades. Fuse pilot programs began in October at 11:00 Sunday mornings. This program is designed to strengthen families and relationships as they grow together in their faith journey. Fuse children's program was attended by an average of seven children. Our Childcare Department provides a fun, safe, and loving environment for infants and toddlers. Most FPC functions offer the option of this excellent service. A staff of 12 qualified, part time workers serves faithfully on a rotating basis. Our Children’s Ministries Department staff includes: Susie Woodin – Assistant Director Michele Lenderman – (part time) Classroom Administrator Monnie Miller – Childcare Director Deb Wagner – (volunteer) KidZone Music Director Rhonda Cardona – Preschool Director Amanda Hanke – Re3 I am so blessed to have had the privilege of working with this extremely capable staff. I am looking forward to what the Lord will continue to do in 2011. Pray for the Children’s Ministry department as they seek to follow the Lord’s leading in the lives of the children. May we always be reminded of the words of a favorite song, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so . . . . “

FPC Christian Preschool “Providing an excellent Christ-centered education for more than 25 years” First Presbyterian Christian Preschool does provide an excellent education that is Christ-centered. This program has evolved into a valuable outreach ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Yakima that is reaching and impacting many families throughout the Yakima Valley. It is exciting to see children of our alumni now coming to preschool! But why should parents send their child here? Children who are a part of this program begin their education journey with a strong foundation for learning throughout their life. Here at First Presbyterian Christian Preschool we help children to develop awareness and confidence in God’s love and power, to encourage a positive selfimage, to develop confidence in abilities, to encourage the ability to function as a member of a larger group, to encourage the ability resolve conflicts in a positive manner, and to develop positive attitudes towards learning. We began the 2010 school year at 100% capacity with a waiting list for each class. It closed the year of 2010 with 100% enrollment with a supportive wait-list for our four year old and pre-kindergarten classes as well. Of our 90 children that are enrolled this year, 21% of these families do not have a church home. Another 18% come from First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. This leaves 61% coming from churches throughout Yakima Valley. It is important to note that we have seen the number of families attending First Pres grow in our preschool families. Many of the families that are now listing First Pres as their home church previously listed “no church home” in previous years! Our program includes a physical education/gross motor curriculum for all ages. In addition, we have an extended day enrichment program “Kid’s Club” to help meet the needs of families. Each week our children also receive music classes. We have many extra programs and functions that bring many young families to our church including Thanksgiving Feasts, Family Advent Celebration, Christmas Program, Spring Tea Program, and End of the Year Picnics. The 2010 Christmas Program brought in over 500 people to our church. Each week the children attend a chapel time where they are taught what it means to worship God. This is a time where we pray, sing, and read God’s Word. Through our church family donations and donations from our preschool parents, each child receives a Preschooler’s Bible to have at home. In chapel each week a story is read from this Bible and a letter goes home to parents telling them what was read so they can reinforce the story with their child. In addition to the weekly chapel letter, families receive a monthly newsletter which includes information on opportunities and programs here at First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. The children who come through this program are well equipped to begin kindergarten. We receive numerous reports back from school districts stating that the children who have come to them from our preschool are far ahead of any other students entering kindergarten. The teaching staff we have are competent in early childhood education and bring not only high academics, but teach valuable social skills that lay their strong foundation for continued learning. Our staff includes four lead classroom teachers, and four assistant teachers. We have a Board of Directors with seven members who help with the direction and program of this outreach ministry. Our teaching staff includes: Melissa Gray – Lead Teacher Jenifer Knight – Assistant Teacher Channa Case – Assistant Teacher Mary Sundquist – Lead Teacher Becky Gruenberg – Latte Barista & Assistant Teacher Barbara Toweill – Assistant Teacher Christina Clark – Lead Teacher Jessica Van Horn – Lead Teacher Higher Grounds latte bar has become a strong part of our program and the whole church as well. It is open mornings Monday through Friday serving all who come into the church building. Becky Gruenberg is our barista serving drinks, greeting all who come through our building and making them feel welcomed. The money that comes in through this goes toward the running of the coffee stand and we hope this becomes a more productive fund raiser for our preschool scholarship fund. Volunteers, especially John Benson, help with the running of the coffee stand on Sunday mornings.

The preschool also have mission projects in which they participate. This past Christmas we joined with the Youth Ministry Dept to supply a very needy preschool family with Christmas gifts and a grocery gift card. We also support soldiers who are deployed away from home by sending regular care packages. Last year one of our own church family’s soldier, came back and visited the preschool to thank us for our support. This was very meaningful to the children to be able to actually see and hear from someone who received something they made or sent. We have a volunteer advisory Board of Directors who support this program and help to make important decisions regarding staffing and programming. Our Board members include: Heidi Bethel, Jen Trammell, Aleah Mickelson, Toni Thompson, Heidi Dobie, Kathy Eaton, and Susie Woodin. I consider our ability to offer scholarships to the families who would be unable to attend our preschool without this assistance, a tremendous accomplishment and blessing with long term effects on this community. At the beginning of the 2010 school year we made a plea to this congregation for the need of scholarship funds. We feel blessed to be able to assist families and enable them to be a part of this educational foundation. The recipient families are very grateful and so is the staff of the preschool. Your faithfulness to this program is commendable and we thank you for helping us meet this challenge. The families that receive these scholarships are required to volunteer time back to the program. Children in our preschool program are invited and participate in many of the Children’s Ministry programs here at FPC. They join in giving shoeboxes for Samaritan Purse, plus many have begun attending KidZone on Sunday mornings. As the director of this school, I meet with the teachers each day to pray before beginning the day. We ask for God’s blessing and guidance to be given to the teachers, students, families, staff and members of this church. With God’s guidance and help, we know that this school will continue to be an impact and reach others for Christ. It is truly a joy and a privilege to be able to serve God in this position. Thank you.

Student Ministries Wednesday Nights – During the school year we have youth group almost every Wednesday night. This weekly event takes place both in the FPC gym and in the PowerHouse. The center of our gatherings with students is the meal that we eat together. We have found this to be a wonderful time for students to get to know each other better in a non-programmed format. The meal is also the time when we have the most adults spending time with students, getting to know them better and allowing themselves to be known. We also use videos, games, and small group activities to build a sense of community. We studied together the Gospel of Matthew, the letter to the Ephesians, and the book of Genesis. Our average attendance was 55 students (usually 20-30 high school, and 25-35 mid high students). Sunday Mornings – In the winter/spring we were still doing the “Sunday School” format from 9:30a to 10:45a on Sundays. However, in an attempt to see our teenagers be more connected to the rest of our church community we changed this format to allow students to attend the 9:30a worship service. Some students sat with their parents, and others sat with student ministry leaders, and after the service we gathered in the PowerHouse. In the summer time we used the 11a to 12p time to do fun activities together, and during the school year we used this time to either do small groups or join the Fuse activity (ie, pumpkin carving, operation Christmas child, etc). For the students who have participated in this new format, we have seen them connect quite well with the adults of our church. However, for some families this new format has resulted in their student being less involved. Sunday school was averaging around 35 students, and this new way of doing Sundays has been averaging around 20 students. Confirmation Class – From January to April we had three high school guys and three high school girls participate in the Confirmation Class. Four of these students chose to make public professions of faith to our community, two chose to become members, and one was baptized. Outreach Camp – Instead of doing a mission trip to some faraway place, we chose to focus the energy of our high school students on mission work closer to home in 2010. We organized and counseled the Outreach Camp at Ghormley in June, and then worked with the Madison House for the rest of the summer and a little bit into the fall. We had 14 high school students as counselors, and several of these students continued to serve at the Madison House on Tuesday nights throughout the summer. Special Events –On top of our weekly programs and small groups we also had some special events for students to participate in. 12 high school students went to Ghormley for “SnowBlast” where we learned about the International Justice Mission and what God desires for social justice in the world. 25 mid high students came to FPC for the “Boom-Shaka-Lock-In” for a night of games, food, and getting to know each other better. 6 students participated in the “Earth Day” service project down at the SouthEast Community Center, helping to clean up neighborhoods. 16 mid high and 23 high school students floated the river with us on two separate days for a chance to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation and the beauty of fellowship with one another. 34 students hung out in Seattle for a day of video games, shopping, and a Mariner’s game. 39 students spent a day a Rimrock Lake for skiing, swimming, and barbequing. 9 students helped out at the Sunfair Parade and 4 at the Clothing X-change to serve the community. 24 students helped us hand out hot drinks and collect cannned food on Halloween at our “Trick-Or-Canned-Food” event. 29 middle school students went to “SlamQuest” at Ghormley for a weekend retreat where we learned more about what it looks like to wrestle with God. And right before Christmas about 20 of our high school students helped us shop for a family in need of Christmas presents, and pack presents for the Salvation Army’s “Toys for Tots”. Staff Changes – Starting January 1, 2011, Jeff Murray will be the new Director of Student Ministry, Karin Skone will move to a volunteer position, and Tyler Van Horn will move into a 6 month transition period to help Jeff get acclimated to student ministry at FPC. Please pray for these transitions.

Golden Circle Report 2010 The Golden Circle Class continues to be much more than a Bible Study. For so many years now, the class has come together on Sundays through sunshine, rain or snow (even a volcanic eruption) hardly ever being cancelled. Many church saints have passed through this class which started as a gathering of young married couples and continues to be a vital support group for all. The class time includes a time of prayer, singing of hymns, offertory and Bible study lesson (not to mention a few good jokes) with a great team of teachers led by Harley Drollinger. In addition to being a “mini-service,” Golden Circle continues to financially support several missions including AME (Larry Bennett,) Wycliffe (David Graves,) YWAM (Aaron Barker) and others including the Union Gospel Mission. Though many members have since passed away, we continue to serve and welcome all newcomers. Our motto is “Golden Circle – it’s not just for the elderly.” Thomas J Oliva

MOPS MINISTRIES MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is a ministry that reaches out to mothers of children ranging from birth through kindergarten. MOPS International’s mission statement is: “MOPS International exists to encourage, equip and develop every mother of preschoolers to realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader in the name of Jesus Christ.” MOPS at First Pres meets two times a month, on the first and third Fridays from 9am to 11:15am. Each meeting offers moms an opportunity to have a nurturing rest from their children while those children are upstairs being loved on and taught about Jesus in our superb MOPPETS childcare program. During those two hours, moms are nurtured by entering into fellowship with other young moms… by befriending mentor moms who have the wisdom and experience to encourage them along the way… by guest speakers invited in to speak on topics relevant to young mothers and their families… by a lending library full of good parenting and family resources… by being given access to our Encouragement Room for a chance to receive prayer or just a listening ear. Our overarching prayer and goal is that every moment of our time spent in MOPS will ultimately bring glory to Jesus Christ, with the consistent prayer that each mom entering through our doors would be drawn closer to Him. As MOPS enters its 13th year in ministry at First Presbyterian, we continue to minister to over 125 moms that come from varying backgrounds. Approximately 60% of our group attends First Pres. and other churches, and 40% does not attend church at all. This shows we are reaching out to those unconnected to a church and to Jesus Christ and that is awesome! MOPS is a tremendously effective way for First Pres to reach outside its walls and meet the needs of young mothers and families in our community. Our mentor mom program continues to be a featured strength of our program. It is exciting to have such committed prayer warriors who are so willing to give of themselves to the younger generation in time, love, teaching and compassion. Our MOPPETS childcare program is supported by a great group of dedicated Christ-centered volunteers who give so freely of themselves to love on our children, teaching them about Jesus so consistently. We are tremendously supported by the childcare department, and could not do MOPS without it. We are also extremely blessed to receive financial support from our congregation and church leadership. The reality of having our financial needs mostly covered has meant that we have more time to pray for these young moms and create a meaningful atmosphere in which each mom has the opportunity to seek Jesus for herself. Our table for “Grandmothers of Preschoolers” continues to thrive in its 4th year of existence. This table consists of a table leader, assistant, and Mentor mom and is open to Grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren. It is referred to as our “GOPS” table. We also have for the first time a Spanish speaking table which allows women at that table to talk and pray together in their native language. This year it has been a strong support for women and will continue to grow. The annual MOPS National Convention was held in Orlando, Fl. in August 2010. We had two women from our leadership represent our ministry. Having been one of the two in attendance I can tell you that it was an awesome experience and I am looking forward to watching another group of women attend the Convention this coming year. We will continue our efforts to reach out to “every mom,” as we provide a special place for grandmothers of preschoolers, Spanish-speaking only moms (by having translators available), homeschooling moms, and moms with children who have special needs. Our ministry has been able to serve these diverse groups of moms largely due to the servant hood of our congregation… so we thank you, First Presbyterian Church for being such an amazingly supportive host to our MOPS group! You are making an eternal difference in many young women’s lives! To God be the glory!

Fellowship Ministry Team The Fellowship Ministry Team’s focus in 2010 was to build community by connecting God’s family. God’s intended meaning of fellowship is living in community together and not just being together but doing together. Fellowship at First Presbyterian Church is about doing with Christ; it is our partnership with Christ in fulfilling God’s will. 2010 was the 125th birthday of our church and Fellowship Ministry was instrumental in working with other ministry teams to plan the celebration. A “dinner party”, evening of worship and a day of service were celebrated together. First Presbyterian Church reached out to our church body, community, and world as we engaged in projects to clean up our grounds, complete needed facilities work at Camp Ghormley and Madison House, participate in building our 11th Habitat for Humanity home, and fill and send boxes of hygiene items, snacks, and miscellaneous supplies to field soldiers serving in Afghanistan and to YWAM mission teams for distribution to those they serve. A small group dinner was organized and hosted in May to bring all small groups together for one evening. The theme was” Living and Loving Together” and Pastor Mark was the speaker. Julie Grove introduced an opportunity for small groups to engage in ongoing intercession with prayer on behalf of our church, Session, and staff. The month of July found Fellowship Ministry working alongside other ministry teams and members of our congregation to serve at Luis Palau’s CityFest. Following the event outreach was provided to welcome into our body individuals who had made a commitment to Christ and desired fellowship and a church home. In November Fellowship Ministry began actively working with pastoral staff to return to a six week prospective membership class format. Integral to this plan is including prospective members in both existing or new small groups and 1:1 mentoring by Elders. Fellowship ministry hosted an all church Thanksgiving dinner that was followed by a wonderful evening worship led by Worship Ministry Team. Fellowship Ministry was the organizing ministry team for the RE3 Dinners during 2010 and will continue to provide this blessing of a meal together during 2011. Fellowship Ministry was asked to help with increasing the signage around our building so that visitors were more easily able to navigate our big and beautiful church. Plans for both low tech and high tech visual displays were created. In addition ideas to open our church to greater community use were brainstormed. All will be reviewed and considered for implementation in 2011. It has been a busy year on Fellowship Ministry but a blessed time of serving our God and the family of First Presbyterian Church.

Service Ministry Team 2010 was a year impacted by the national economy financial down turn. In spite of budget cuts God showed us an outpouring of love and compassion for our fellow man. He took us to the far reaches of the world and He took us across the street to show His love through the giving of this church and the people that carry out His work. Careforce Lifekeys Lifekeys continues to reach people throughout our valley and state with the life changing classes that restore and/ or strengthen their sense of value, belonging and acceptance. The classes help men & women rediscover the love and healing that Jesus Christ has bestowed on his believers thru the Lifekeys classes that include Search For Life, Man to Man, Woman To Woman, Valiant Man and Understanding Your Valiant Man, and others. Memorial Bible Church has had 40 women complete Search for Life, & 38 women have completed Woman to Woman. According to Linda Spence, the Lifekeys coordinator at MBC, “a few were so changed, that they stepped out of their comfort zone and have gotten involved in various other ministries in the church.” This last Fall, Dr Allan Meyer met with approximately 15-20 men at Memorial Bible Church, and challenged them to take a stand for sexual integrity by completing the Valiant Man course and they accepted that challenge and are planning a VM course this Spring. 2010 saw 9 men graduate from the 3rd class of VM at the Union Gospel Mission. The class was facilitated by Joe Thorpe Sr, Keven Morse, UGM Chaplain, and Ellery Banks, the Program Director. They have 12 men registered for the class beginning in January. Quoting Joe, “I feel very privileged to be working with these men and look forward to each new class. They are a fine example of Christian men working through their difficulties in life with the bible in one hand and offering the other in helping their fellow classmates.” Valiant Man and Understanding your Valiant Man, the companion course for wives, was taken by 9 individuals here at FPC and also 7 couples attended the classes at the Hires Counseling Center. These men and women learned why God created such a strong sexual desire in His male children and how men can win their battle in the face of a society & culture that creates a sexual war zone everyday in a man’s attempt to be the valiant man God intended him to be. At FPC, a men’s small group agreed to make Search for Life a Bible study course as well as a way to grow their relationships with each other and with Jesus Christ. When Dick Rowland first suggested it to his group, there were some feet dragging, until they started the course. They began looking forward to the next video and group discussion that accompany it; and, according to Dick, it has strengthened their love for Jesus and one another beyond their expectations. Through the Lifekeys connection to First Pres, Bethel Church in Richland and Wabash Presbyterian church in Auburn, together invited Allan & Helen Meyer to visit their churches while they were in the Pacific NW this Fall. Bethel held a marriage conference that was attended by over 250 couples, and Wabash held facilitator training classes for over 70 of their members. For 2011, the Lifekeys programs will continue to focus on reaching people inside and outside our Church to share the life changing truths that knowing Jesus brings to his people. Isaiah 61:2 says; “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,” In Luke 4:1819, Jesus announced himself and his mission by quoting this passage. Jesus then said about his disciples in John 17:18; “as you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” Lifekeys classes continue to reach those outside our church walls. Classes scheduled for the winter and spring include Valiant Man, Understanding Your Valiant Man, Door of Hope and Making Marriage Better.

Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp A few years ago someone asked me to describe in a brief way the mission of our camp. After lots of thought I boiled it down to: “Win the lost, Equip the found, and Serve the church” This past year has seen our church examine carefully what it means to be a “missional church”, doing “missional work” as “missional people” in the name of a “missional God”. As I reflect on this past year I think I can see pretty clearly that God is at work in our midst. Just a few statistics I hope will illustrate that reality: 139 known first time commitments to Christ during our summer camp program 306 rededications of their lives to Christ by other campers. This summer saw a 10% increase over 2009 in number of campers attending, in spite of continued economic uncertainty. In addition to our own 11 programmed summer camps, the breakdown of whom we serve throughout the year is as follows: 45 separate youth groups, 14 family camps, 12 public schools, five Christian schools, eight church leadership retreats, 12 women’s groups, 12 men’s retreats, three college groups and three singles gatherings. This year we were privileged to host two Central Washington Presbytery events and also saw a wedding of two former summer staff. A growing dimension of ministry this past year was to local area pastors and ministry workers. We offer our facilities free of charge to any pastor or ministry worker that need a day or two to get away for rest, prayer, study, or other personal need. This past year we were able to minister to 10 separate individuals in such a way. I pray this aspect of our ministry will continue to grow. Volunteers continue to bless our ministry and make what we do here possible. Over 60 mostly high school volunteers helped out throughout the summer, two volunteer ministry teams came and helped us prepare for the summer, and Esther Nelson has been coordinating regular volunteer crews on a near monthly basis. In addition, the Pollinger family and Rich Williams have completed our year round staff as volunteers. We have continued to make facility upgrades throughout the year including the total remodel of the Lower Lodge bathrooms, replacing inefficient hot water tanks with on- demand water heaters, installing a second emergency generator to cover Evergreen Lodge and our office and preparation of our new campfire area. We also constructed a 10 hole extreme mountain golf course around the perimeter of camp to complement our Frisbee golf course that so many enjoy. In 2011 we will be adding a second session of Primary Camp and a third middle school session of LEAP to increase our number of summer-programmed camps to 13. As funds are available we will continue to upgrade bathrooms in Alder, Evergreen and the girl’s bathhouse. Thanks for your prayers, support and encouragement. With God all things are possible!

Worship Ministry This has been a challenging year for the worship ministry team. Through many changes in personnel we were able to keep our focus on worship. We also completed the project of making the front pews portable so that we can have adequate space to serve communion from the kneelers again. We also provided a wheelchair space on the north outside isle. Ushers – Organized by Scott Henyan Every person entering our sanctuary for a worship service encounters the friendly smile and warm hand of a greeter and a welcoming greeting from an usher. The ushers provide the worshiper with a program, directs them to a seating location and when needed provides them with a hearing device. Once worship begins the ushers help late comers find a seat. They are then asked to count the worshipers for church records, take the offering and secure the gifts in the office. When the service is completed, the ushers walk through the pews to collect any loose materials left behind to provide a clean and welcoming environment for the next service. These men and women work through the year on rotating teams in all three services. We are very thankful for their important contribution to our worship time. The Connection Center – Organized by Dorothy and Merle Smith As many of you know, on Sundays the Connection Center has become a popular place in the Garden Room. As well as being a welcome presence behind the counter, volunteers are busy greeting, dispensing information and assisting in any way they can. Service to newcomers and the congregation is their goal. Something, that may not be generally known, is that in an emergency the Connection Center has become a central location for assistance. There is a list available of those who are trained in CPR and the use of a defibrillator. The Center also has the ability to be in touch with our security patrol in the parking llot. Come by and receive a friendly welcome and get “connected” with the many servicers provided at First Pres. We also welcome anyone who feels they would like to be of service in this area, to drop by and let us know. We would be blessed, and so will you! The Sanctuary Guild - Organized by Lu and Damon Smith All banners, liturgical pulpit cloths and seasonal decorations in the sanctuary and garden room are kept up to date and appropriate to the focus of our congregation by the Sanctuary Guild. These workers are seldom seen in action but their fruits are enjoyed with every visit to the church. We are very thankful for their selfless efforts in maintaining the visual focus of our church. Media – Organized by Debbie Kent All of the visual aids in our worship services are accomplished by a team of faithful volunteers operating computers in the balcony of our sanctuary. These individuals also practice the flow of the service and accommodate changes at the Thursday night worship rehearsals. All items are programmed ahead of time by Debbie Kent and implemented by the volunteers. Again, even though their faces are seldom seen their efforts greatly enhance our worship experience. Sound – Organized by Debbie Kent Every auditory effect and enhancement in our worship services is monitored and adjusted by our sound technicians. A variety of techs continually adjust sound levels through a computer bank in the balcony. This essential service strives to meet the expectations of a very diverse group of listeners every Sunday. They, too, rehearse with the music groups each Thursday evening. Success for them is watching you enjoy listening to all aspects of the service without being consciously aware of their activities. The Contemporary Music Team – Organized by Interim director Mark Tumney A variety of musicians and singers offer their talents to enhance the musical aspects of worship in the contemporary services at 8:00 and 9:30 each Sunday. These individuals begin rehearsing on their own every

28

Tuesday, followed by Thursday evening group rehearsal, and again early Sunday (7:00 am) dress rehearsal. Mark has generously volunteered to organize these efforts until a new contemporary leader is hired. He has produced a wide variety of musical styles in an attempt to draw everyone’s focus to the praise and adulation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Temple Choir – Organized by Interim director Dr. Scott Peterson. Many talented men and women have faithfully served in providing quality musical leadership for our 11:00 traditional service in 2010 through a tumultuous series of shifts in musical directors. Gordon Levitt served as interim director following the departure of Dan Hamrick in April. After the choir’s summer break, Dr. Peterson served as interim director through the remainder of the year culminating in the wonderful Carols and Candles Service at Christmas. Currently, Rodney Eells has taken over the direction of the choir until a new director is hired. Through all of these changes, Jon Waite has provided his very capable accompaniment and musical features on the organ. Prayer Ministry – Lead by Donna and Jim Fuhlman Prayer continues to be a foundational activity throughout the community of First Presbyterian Church Yakima. Jim and Donna help coordinate a wide variety of prayer activities throughout our church. Prayer chains, Fifth Tuesday Prayer and Praise services, our church’s contribution to the 24/7 Christian prayer support of the City of Yakima, available prayer support every Sunday before and after worship, teaching biblical perspective on prayer, and holding up all ministries of First Presbyterian Church are just some of the prayer ministry’s efforts.
