Sermon Series Who will you worship? Who will you follow? These are fundamental questions at the heart of Revelation. As we journey through life, we all worship and follow someone or something. Each and every day, we are faced with a choice. Each and every day, we struggle to answer these questions in light of the seen reality around us. Revelation is probably the most read, but least understood book of the Bible. It is a “discipleship manual” that opens our senses to the spiritual reality around us. Stand in the Gap for Our Church
Are you interested in guarding the health of our church? Every Sunday people are gathering in the chapel at 8:30a for 45 minutes to intercede through prayer for our body. All are welcome to come, any Sunday or every Sunday. The Lord calls us to bring to Him the desires of our heart; let’s give Him our church and watch what happens. “After all no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-for we are members of his body.” Eph. 5:29 “I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap, on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none”. Paul was only in Thessalonica a short time before he was run out of town. Yet the little church he established there became an example for centuries, as these believers carried the Good News to the areas around them. Come and see what we can learn from Paul's ministry to the Thessalonians, and their response. The Thessalonians were practical in meeting needs. We can do the same today in the greater Yakima area.

Dear Church Family, As I write this letter (in July), the nation mourns over the tragic events that took place in Aurora, Colorado. Indescribable pain has been inflicted on so many. Questions such as “Why did God allow this to happen?” and “Where was God in the midst of this horrific event?” are not easily answered. Honestly, they may never be answered to anyone’s complete satisfaction. Some may even conclude that God does not exist as a direct result from this tragedy. In my opinion, that would compound the tragedy, but I can understand why one would be led to this conclusion. Our summer study on Revelation has been a blessing to me and I hope it has been a blessing to you. One of the most important lessons we should take from Revelation is that Jesus has already won. Chapter five of Revelation clearly communicates this. The world as we experience it should be viewed through the lens of chapter five. The slain Lamb, Jesus, has been resurrected and provides us the means of eternal life. Death, pain, and sin do not have the final say. This is the Good News in Jesus. Consequently, the devil cannot go after the Lamb, so he goes after those who follow the Lamb. The devil slanders, deceives, and kills. There is no doubt the devil has been at work in Colorado. And yet, he cannot take away the victory afforded to us by our Lord and Savior. Jerry Sittser’s wonderful book, A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss, offers his reflections on the experience of losing his wife, mother, and daughter in a terrible automobile accident in 1991. In one chapter, Jerry wrestles with the randomness of his own painful experience and how it fits with God’s will and plan. He concludes: “I have often imagined my own story fitting into

some greater scheme, the half of which I many never fathom. I simply do not see the bigger picture, but I choose to believe that there is a bigger picture and that my loss is part of some wonderful story authored by God himself. Sometimes I wonder about how my own experience of loss will someday serve a greater purpose that I do not yet see or understand. My story may help to redeem a bad past, or it may bring about a better future. Perhaps my own family heritage has produced generations of absent and selfish fathers, and I have been given a chance to reverse that pattern. Perhaps people suffering a catastrophic loss will someday look to our family for hope and inspiration. I do not know. Yet I choose to believe that God is working toward some ultimate purpose, even using my loss to that end.” (Sittser, p. 118-119) I find comfort in Jerry’s words and I believe God does have a bigger plan, even if I cannot always understand it. During tragedies, I hold to the promise offered to us in Revelation 21. I quote this Scripture, which references the New Jerusalem and our hope for the future, often when officiating at a memorial service. It is the ultimate conclusion to God’s great plan. I hope it offers you some comfort: “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:3-4). Living and loving for Him,

I hate to say it…but summer is quickly coming to an end! Do not despair though…we are still having a great time in Kidzone with Summer Singers for K-5th graders, and our combined class for 2 ½ - 4 year olds. Thank you to everyone who has served in those classes this year. It’s not too late though to join the fun…Summer Singers runs through August 26, and the little guys class goes until August 12. Come check us out this month! We are also busy preparing for another great school year in KidZone with exciting plans for kickoff Sunday on September 9. Keep your eyes open for upcoming information! We hope you remember that the ONLY way we can continue to provide such great opportunities for our kids is through your willingness to serve in KidZone and other areas of children’s programming. Without your commitment the kids would be left to figure this world out on their own. That is a scary thought! You don’t have to be a Bible scholar, you don’t have to be a teacher, you just need to love Jesus and have a desire for children to know Him through a true and life changing relationship with Him. In KidZone we have found that through the relationships formed between leaders and kids, Jesus becomes more real and someone that they want to continue to know more about. Can you think of a better way to impact this church, this community, or the world for that matter? Please join us this year in KidZone…schedules are flexible, and you can make a huge difference in the lives of kids today. We all need more of Jesus…and this is a fantastic way to receive more of Him for young and old. Thousand Trails Camping Trip Review Pictures are worth a thousand words they say, but in this case can’t fully express the great time 7 families had camping just outside beautiful Leavenworth, WA. Swimming, hiking, biking, mini-golf, smores, great food and friends! It doesn’t get any better than that! Family Ministries is all about getting families together to share our lives with each other through outings and events both at the church, around the community and beyond. Check out the calendar (pg. 3 & 15) for other opportunities this summer.

Mission to Cambodia 2012
Working for the Lord in Cambodia! Two weeks; 12 people ages 15 to 65 stepping out of comfort zones and into God’s Kingdom in the nation of Cambodia; trusting in the Lord, laying down fears and concerns; recognizing the Cambodian people are bright, friendly, relational, loving, treasuring family/friends and hungry for the Truth of Jesus Christ! God opportunities in working alongside ministries out of YWAM Battambang. Renewing of minds, softening of hearts, breaking of hearts for others. Seeing that many Cambodians have so little, yet are happy. Praise God for His provision and His faithfulness in this adventure into more of His world! - Nancy Gustafson

Happily Ever After
H@F is excited to bring you an interview of Lou & Ellen Bartelli who are looking forward to celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary in September 2012! Lou and I met at the Winnies, the annual awards for the Warehouse Theater. When my friend and I arrived, somewhat late for the dinner, there were only two seats left and they just happened to be at Lou’s table. We went together for almost three years before we married in September of 1981. I believe that Lou and I have had a successful marriage because of two things. The first was that we were both thirty when we married and had a realistic idea of what we wanted in a partner. We were active in the singles group with Pastor Harlan Shoop, providing fellowship with other young people with a strong relationship to the Lord. The second was that we both put God in our relationship and wanted our wedding to reflect the sacred vow we took before God to love, honor and cherish each other in sickness and in health. “In Sickness and In Health”: When faced with sickness, we have had three incidences to show our love and commitment to each other, while learning to trust and lean on the Lord. The first was when we conceived our son, Zach. At 8:00 AM I found out I was pregnant. At noon I had a doctor’s appointment, and I was told I could no longer work and was confined to bed for the next three and a half months. I was told I could only get up to go to the bathroom. In the course of one day our lives and income changed completely. My husband did everything. He cooked meals, cleaned the house, did the laundry and all of the yard work in addition to working a stressful job, while I lay about and asked him to get me things. Lou and I prayed that the baby would survive and trusted the Lord that he would protect our son and our relationship. When Zach was seventeen, we discovered he had an electrical problem in his heart. His extra circuit initiated extreme tachycardia and the possibility of sudden death.

The surgery itself was complicated in that a wrong shot could wipe out his natural pace maker and he could end up with an artificial pace maker for the rest of his life. Lou and I prayed harder than we have ever prayed in our lives. We asked everyone we knew to pray for Zach and contacted First Presbyterian prayer chain. It wasn’t an immediate success, but after three heart ablations, we found he had two circuits and they were able to break both of them. Our third brush with a medical problem was when I developed Rheumatoid arthritis. The ligaments in my knees shortened and bent my knees to forty-five degrees forcing me into a wheel chair for about four months. Once again Lou did most of the work, and our family prayed that everything would be okay and it was. Our advice for young couples facing a health issue is Romans 12:12. “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer.”

Greetings from Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp! By the time you read this, most of our summer programmed camps will be completed, we will be finishing out the summer guest group camps and the majority of our summer staff will have left to return to school. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the summer season flashes by. Like an alpine meadow wildflower that brilliantly blooms but for a brief season; short lived but glorious in its moment. This summer has been filled with evidence that God is actively at work in the lives of campers and staff. Here are but a few of the comments we have received from campers: “I commit to be with God more often” Junior 1 camper “I learned a whole lot more about heaven” Junior 1 camper “I want Christ to lead my life…” Primary 1 camper “I am letting him, (Christ) in my heart.” Primary 1 camper “I want to be like Jesus.” Primary 1 camper “I will always accept people for who they are” Girls Launch camper “Before I came to camp I was undecided about whether I even believed God existed or not. After this week I have learned that God is real and He loves me” Sr. High camper “I’ve committed to pursuing Christ on a deeper level then I have before.” Sr. High camper “ I fell away from God and then found a stronger and deeper emotion and love for God than ever before.” Sr. High camper We have been privileged to give out over $10,000 in scholarships to over 80 campers. At this point it looks like we will have approximately the same number of campers as last year, around 880. We are very excited about our brand new website, check us out at www.ghormleymeadow.org and, we are also on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, a newly purchased stump grinder has helped us begin the process of eliminating over 300 stumps in our heavy use areas. We have completed the required planning for our entry road completion project and hope to begin that work as soon as the Forest Service gives their approval. That project is expected to cost about $10,000 to complete. Continue to hold us up in prayer for safety, a clear communication of the gospel, and opportunities to love kids and youth in the name of Jesus. I knew you even before you were conceived . . . The word of the LORD came to me, saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1: 4-5 We were created to be loved and to love and consequently we have an inborn need to seek after significance and belonging. Unfortunately we often search for our worth in places and among people who cannot truly value us. We look for validation from wrong sources. God created us to love us and demonstrated this to the world with the absolute sacrifice He made by giving His son, Jesus Christ to die for us on the cross. It is only through a personal relationship with Him that we can know real love; a love that overcomes experiences of rejection and feelings of unworthiness. It is by His eternal gift that we can know the amazing truth that even if we were never wanted or loved by human heart and mind, we were desired in the heart and mind of God! For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 My Child, I know everything about you. Growing Capable Parents – Growing Great Kids Raising children and living in a family can be really confusing and challenging. Starting September 9 at 11:00a in the Gym at FPC, Laurie Kanyer will teach a 7 week parenting class geared to families with kids who range in ages 0 to 12 years old.
This 7 week course will focus on what to expect at every age of development; ways to build strong families and methods to getting kids to cooperate. Laurie will provide information and discussion groups for the different ages and stages of families so you will have the opportunity to dialog and share with other parents who have similar interests and needs. Laurie does a dynamic job of bringing up everyday situations you may face and takes time to offer practical feedback and suggestions you can use. All curriculum and material are backed up by Christian principals and biblical references. Special support will be offered for parent who experience rough and bumpy years as a child. A concurrent children’s and student program will be offered as well as childcare for ages 0-5. There is no cost for this class or the program for your kids unless you want to buy the books Laurie will reference. 15
