“Love Well Through Drops of Grace”
SEPTEMBER 2021 VOL 128
Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church
Community Life Groups — Curt McFarland, Pastor We thank you, Church, for continuing to pray for Pastor Bill, Debbie, and our Elders as they prayerfully seek God’s direction. This month, Pastor Curt has written for Grace Alive.
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7-9
THE POWER OF SUPERHEROS
Growing up I loved superheroes. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, The Hulk, all of them lived in my home and in my head. Even with amazing strength each of my Superheroes had some problem or weakness. Batman was helpless without his utility belt, the Hulk could not control his anger, Spiderman occasionally ran out of web juice and confidence, Superman, the greatest of them all, became powerless at the slightest hint of Kryptonite. I forgave their momentary weaknesses because they always found the strength to pull it all together just in time.
THE REAL POWER OF JESUS
While I was chasing superheroes Jesus taught another way... and He modeled it too. He had, from all eternity, unlimited power. There was no weakness or vulnerability with Him. No one forced Him to give up His power... no one could. He voluntarily let it go in order to empower us. He became weak so that His strength could be ours. His strength allows us to live honestly, love honestly, care honestly, serve honestly.
We are jars of clay, fragile, easily broken. His power becomes our power. His love, our love. His mercy, our mercy. God has given us everything we need to overcome every affliction, every crushing blow, every uncertainty, even despair and persecution. We endure every hardship, hurt and heartache because God provides the power. Superheroes are fun to cheer for, but they are absolutely unreal. We need real power as we face real problems. Real power comes directly from One Source, God Himself. What is true for us individually is also true for us collectively. The church is not meant to be a display of human power, a dazzling demonstration of human strength. When those who are weak and wounded enter Grace of Christ what they need is the power of God. And, they need to know we stand with them. They don't need "imitation power" or "temporary power," they need honest jars of clay who are willing to let the power and love of God shine through us. We do that best when we place our clay jars side by side and we point to Jesus. Weak and with you, – Pastor Curt
PAUL'S PERSPECTIVE
Paul, one of Jesus' early followers, picked up on this... "we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." In another place (2 Corinthians 12) when confronted with his own weakness, this same Paul heard God tell him, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, Paul concluded, "I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." Christians have no need to put on a show of strength. Christians can admit their weaknesses, and even celebrate them, because they KNOW they are loved by God. When we are honest about our need, our emptiness, our frailty, our limitations, then we can demonstrate that, "the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." 2

We Love Worshiping, Eating and Being Together!
Sunday, September 12th | One Service | 10am BBQ Lunch After Service We love being together, worshiping and eating, two of our favorite things. Spending time with our church family is definitely a refreshing way to start the week and coming soon, it will be a great way to begin a new season! We can’t wait to kick-off our fall classes, new sermon study and time together on Sunday, September 12th. Come to our ONE WORSHIP SERVICE that morning at 10:00am in the Sanctuary and stay for lunch! We’ll BBQ, hang out, listen to great music and have lots of games for the young and young at heart – all out on the North Lawn right after church.
PRAYER Grace is a church that knows our Prayers Matter. We have a rich history with our pastors, elders, deacons, and staff being led in and through prayer by the Holy Spirit. We seek God’s direction and offer many ways to incorporate prayer in our everyday lives. Weekly prayer letter with requests and praises from our church family, a prayer chain for emergency needs, prayer threaded through every aspect of Sunday worship, prayer partners available after each worship service to pray one on one with others, praying in shifts one Sunday a month for our city, and offering Sozo prayer appointments to those interested. (more information on our website www. YakimaGrace.com/sozo). If you want more information on prayer at Grace, please contact our church, any of our Elders or Pastors. We find it an honor to pray with and for you as well as celebrate the praises in your life, too.

Thank You For Blessing Adams Elementary School
BOLSAS DE ESPERANZA PARA ADAMS
BAGS OF HOPE FOR ADAMS
Kicking off on Sunday, August 15th, you have the opportunity to bless Adams Elementary School with your Bags of Hope donations. Traditionally, the mission team of Grace of Christ compiles a list of back-to-school wish list items. However, this time, the Mission Ministry Team is asking for “love offerings” that will be used throughout the entire school-year to purchase needed supplies and boost funding for various activities (for example, Teacher appreciation). According to Pastor Alex Rule, providing Adams with monetary gifts will help families in need who are stretching their budgets for back-to-school items. Rule also shares that your gift will also bless the teachers and staff at Adams.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Adams Elementary Ministry is one of three ministry recipients of Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church’s Bags of Hope donations. The other recipients are Love, INC and Campbell Farm. The “love offering” collection runs through Sunday, August 29th. Blessings to all our families at Grace of Christ and to our community! We continue to share the love of Christ our Lord and Savior with those who need it most, and it is by the Grace of God and the generosity of our congregation that we can continue reaching out to share our love, our time, and resources in order to provide opportunities to our families so they can be successful. As you may know, there is great need in our community that can be difficult to cover at times; God needs more workers who want to commit to serving inside and outside of our church. We cannot do it alone. God wants to use your gifts and talents with those who need it the most and He calls us to make a difference in the lives of many people. The time is now! 5
We also continue delivering food boxes to families in our community. God knows their needs and He is using volunteers and resources from our church and the Yakima Union Gospel Mission to provide for them.
FAMILY BREAKFAST AT MADISON HOUSE
Our family breakfasts at Madison House helps us connect more with parents and their children. We get to know each other better, develop healthier relationships within our community, have fun, and share devotionals. We have family activities, wonderful worship music, and are using Mi Pueblito’s Library to read and share stories with our little ones. Thanks to Jake Kupp for sharing his personal story with our families about how God blessed and led him to success. Our hearts rejoiced as we saw children and adults alike being very attentive and listening to every word. Many of us became very emotional when we saw one of the little girls praying near the end, thanking God for His great plans, and asking Him for a better future for all our families. “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out.” – Deuteronomy 28:1-6

OUTREACH CAMP 2021 “Peace I leave with you” – John 14:27 Despite limitations, setbacks and program restrictions, Outreach Camp 2021 actually took place! We pressed forward, keeping these precious students in the forefront of our minds. Friday, June 18th, we made it to Camp Ghormley, ready for our weekend adventure. It was the first time any of these kids had been to Ghormley – and (spoiler alert!), not only did they have a blast, they experienced the love of Christ! Due to the generous people from Grace of Christ church, we were able to provide a “Mountain Top” experience for these students from Adams Elementary. It was touch and go there for a while, whether we would have enough counselors for the weekend. However, just enough of you beautiful people stepped up to the plate, at zero-hour, responding, “Here I 7

Gracia de Cristo am Lord, send me!” You made it possible for these students to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and have the opportunity to enjoy a full camp experience. THANK YOU!
¡GRACIAS!
The weekend included: swimming, hiking, archery, singing, games on the meadow, building bird houses, water slide, bouncy house, and the zip line! We had times of worship and a chance to hear from our wonderful speaker: Tim Issacson. Counselor-led small group times gave campers and their leaders a time for discussion and questions. Campers heard about the love of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice He made in our place! The message of hope was loud and clear.
Thank you, Grace of Christ! You made this possible. For over fifty years and counting- this ministry has been taking place at Ghormley! I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Outreach Camp is possibly the most beautiful, organic, hands-on, local mission project that our church is involved in. The impact is personal, immediate, and far-reaching. The payoff is eternal. Well done, good and faithful servants!

Hospitality Ministry THANK YOU GREETERS & USHERS!
Praise and thanksgiving to the LORD for all those who have answered the call to serve on Sundays as Greeters and Ushers and to help with coffee during the mid-Covid transition time period! Several have gone above and beyond filling in the gaps as people feel more comfortable returning to worship in person. We are so grateful for your servant’s heart, time, and energy!
SPECIAL EVENTS Special events in the life of the church family happen from time to time, like the up-coming All-Church Picnic on KickOff Sunday in September, the Thanksgiving Sunday Dinner in November, and the simple meal on Ash Wednesday. The Hospitality Ministry Team helps organize events such as these. Extra hands-on-deck are always appreciated! If one of these areas appeals to your sense of fun and service, call the church office at 248-7940 and they will get you connected. We would love to have you as a part of our team! Working with others is a great way to meet new people and build community.
TRAINING FUN
As we prepared for the Fall Kick-Off, The Hospitality Ministry Team gathered together for fellowship, dinner, and bit of training in August. It was so fun to be together again, encouraging one another, re-dedicating our desire to extend the welcome of Jesus to all who enter our church each Sunday, and spending time together in prayer for our church and the ministry of hospitality. The time together in fellowship, laughter, and food was delightful!
WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO HELP We really need help in several areas that fall to the Hospitality Ministry Team. There are so many areas from which to choose...which one sounds good to you?

SUNDAY MORNING GREETERS
Enjoy welcoming people? We can use some more Greeters to serve 3-4 times a year (more often if you are interested!)
HELLO DONNIE!
We are happy to announce an assistant to the Head of Ushers, Don Ide. Donnie grew up at this church, but spent many years living elsewhere as an adult. He returned to Yakima a couple of years ago to help his sister, Donna Smith, with care of their mother, our dearly departed, Harriet Ide. Don decided to stay on in Yakima. Don has a servant’s heart and eagerly volunteered his services wherever he can. He found a niche as an usher. Don is infusing his passion to serve into the usher team. We look forward to the gifts and skills he brings to the team! Donnie Ide
CELEBRATING LIFE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
Do you find joy in celebrating baptisms and baby dedications or welcoming new members to our church? Perhaps you like to work behind the scenes quilting a blanket for a newborn or baking and decorating a cake for the celebration. We need your skills and talents a few times a year.
WELCOME CENTER The Welcome Center opens in September. We can use people to man the center three or more times a year. USHERS Ushers provide the valuable service of helping people find their way in the sanctuary and assisting with the smooth operations of a Sunday service. Working with a team of others, there is flexibility in the time serving as an usher. 9

WELCOME MRS. MAILAND!
My name is Becca Mailand and I am your new preschool director! I am delighted to be at Grace of Christ Preschool and can’t wait to see what God has in store for this amazing school Joel, Becca, Ethan & Micah and ministry. I have more than 10 years of experience in teaching everything from Preschool to 6th grade! I even had the privilege of teaching at Grace of Christ in the 3's and 4's program a few years ago. Both of my boys attended Grace of Christ Preschool and LOVED it! One of my boys is going into 3rd grade and one is starting Kindergarten. When my family moved to Yakima in 2016, Grace of Christ was one of the first places to embrace us. I am committed to bringing this faith-centered preschool ministry to our community for years to come. Thank you for partnering with me this year and building an incredible foundation of faith and learning for these little ones! My door is always open!
WELCOME TO THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR!
We are so thankful to be starting school in-person this year! Covid 19 and all the challenges that have come with the pandemic have hit us hard, but we are looking forward to rebuilding and growing beyond what we can see possible. Parent Orientation will be Wed, September 1st at 6pm in the Garden Room. Contact Becca with any questions at 248-7940 x119. As we begin the school year with a flurry of supplies, newsletters and planning, we also pause to thank God for bringing us to this point: We have a great group of families investing in our program so far, with room to grow! We have found amazing teachers with the experience and skills to support our young learners. We have financial stability due to generous support from the church. We have an amazing preschool board who is helping our preschool revive and thrive. And we have all of you... praying, supporting, and seeking ways to grow this ministry over the coming months and years! Thank you for welcoming me back and be sure to say hi when you’re in the building. I’m glad to be in this role and I’m excited to see where God takes us this year and beyond!

Youth at Grace SUMMER ACTIVITIES / DURING COVID
When Covid hit and we had shut down, youth also had also come to a halt. The time apart was hard, but we were able to keep in touch with some youth. NEW LEADERS OF GRACE YOUTH! Jahzeel Garcia-Figueroa Hello everyone! I am Jahzeel Garcia-Figueroa most of you may know me from being up on-stage assisting in leading worship. I have been attending Grace of Christ for almost 11 years now and essentially grew up in this church. I have gone through our youth ministry and have a deep love for it. Now I have the opportunity to get it back up and running and start from scratch alongside Amae. My favorite thing about youth group is having that space with other people your age and know that they have the same beliefs as you and have that practice to just talk with no fear of judgment. Amae Merrill Hi Church! My name is Amae Merrill. I am married to my wonderful husband Shane. I also have two twin boys. Jacob & Joshua. You have probably seen me up front at church on the worship team. I am also a 3rd grade teacher. I have worked in youth ministry for 8 years! I’m excited to continue to serve in this ministry with my dear friend Jahzeel! My Favorite part of youth group is having the deep conversations about God & life, then seeing that in their lives.
YOUTH FALL KICK-OFF
Wednesdays @ Grace September 15th from 6:pm -8pm Dinner and activities! Van rides home will be provided. 11
We are excited to say that this summer has been great! We ended the summer with a couple activities we’d like to share. We loved meeting each month for Wednesdays@ Grace. Everyone ate dinner together. After dinner the youth headed to the south lawn to play some games, worship and talk. Over the (very hot!) summer, we also enjoyed two youth-only pool parties. During our August Pool Party, we had the opportunity to welcome in the new 6th graders! We had taken the time to reconnect with these kids through the summer and hope to see them in the fall!

Family Ministry — Sarah Huck Family Ministries Coordinator
Every Sunday I wait expectantly for the children of Grace to trickle in and every Sunday I give thanks for each little head knowing that in some way, shape, or form they will experience Jesus that morning. However, I can get easily discouraged when our teachers show up and they only have a few kids. But the Lord continues to remind me it’s ABOUT THE ONE. It only takes one child to accept Jesus as Savior and to begin to transform their home, their family, their community. One.
The Newman's & Marcus Huck Lead a Discussion About Idols Marcus Huck and the Newman’s, who teach the 2nd Sunday of every month, taught on idols, and the children discussed and wrote down some of their own personal idols.
The Cubbies Class Begins Craft From a Lesson on Exodus Isaac Figuero (Moses), Robin & Don Stuber (Pharaoh) Grace Kids has been reading through Exodus and 1 Samuel. In the Seeker’s class, Robin Stuber taught on the plagues of Egypt in Exodus 7 & 10. Pharaoh, being convinced of God’s power, freed the Israelite slaves. Don Stuber (dressed as Pharaoh), showed off his acting skills with Isaac Figueroa who portrayed Moses.
Joanne Benson, Tom Oliva, Mike Bealer, and Ellen Bartelli have been doing a fantastic job keeping our little Cubbies in the Word and entertained with crafts relating to the lesson of the day. These little ones also are learning lessons from Exodus and 1 Samuel. And they are having so much fun! Joann’s enthusiasm, Ellen’s storytelling, Mike’s ability to get down on their level and play, and of course, Tom’s magic tricks. THANK YOU, amazing teachers!

Pat Henle and Jasmine Newman Lead the Sonbeam Class
The Licht’s taught the children about how spending time with God changes them. In Exodus 33, God meets with Moses in a cloud on a mountain and Moses’ face becomes radiant, reflecting that he has spent time with God.
Our Sonbeam class will be moving to the room next to childcare, which is in the actual Sonbeam classroom from way back! Jasmine Newman and Pat Henle have been doing an amazing job with our littles, taking turns leading and creating.

On August 14th we are offering free haircuts and hamburgers to the kids in our community. We have some local stylists and barbers coming to lend their services. There will also be a BBQ and prayer tent, so come and be a part of the face of Grace.
WEDNESDAY'S AT GRACE
Hamilton Licht Pitches During A Game of Fruit Baseball
Grace of Christ Church Enjoys a Pippen's Game On June 19th, we had an all-church event at a Pippen’s baseball game. It was a great night! Such fun to be together enjoying stadium food and watching the fireworks.
Our first Wednesday at Grace was a success! Following dinner, the kids were invited outside to play a messy game of fruit baseball with the Licht’s. And what do you know? KIDS LOVE HITTING FRUIT! Hamilton was a great pitcher and Carol was an amazing coach. The kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves! What fruit was voted the most favorite fruit to hit... plum! Who would’ve thought!
Keeping Cool With Some Water Balloon Fun On our last Wednesday at Grace, Marcus Huck and Craig Myers planned to lead the kids in a very tame and mild water balloon toss. Uh huh. Within seconds tame and mild turned wild and crazy! It was great fun. Water balloon toss turned dodge-ball – who would’ve thought?! 14

Welcome Little Ones! Jesus called the children to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” – Luke 18:16 This year we have had the honor of celebrating with families in our church who have welcomed little ones into their lives. When a baby is born or a new addition joins a family, our church likes to celebrate with a rosebud on the alter Sunday morning; sharing a prayer for the family and a picture, if the family would like. We offer designated times throughout the year for infant and child baptisms and dedications on a Sunday morning. If you would like more information, please call the church, 509-248-7940 or talk to one of our pastors.

Women’s Ministry LOOKING FORWARD – FALL 2021
It’s good to feel like we can plan again! So much of the past year is completely unfathomable to me – but this word from Isaiah was recently brought to the Women’s Ministry meeting,“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way…” – Isaiah 43:18-19.
profile in courage and contains many modern parallels for today’s overloaded and stressed woman. This interactive study features 9 weeks of personal daily assignments and 10 weekly group discussions with video. Books can be purchased from the church for $15.
What we have planned for this Fall will have some familiar offerings and some that are completely new. We look forward to seeing everyone!
BREAKING BREAD & BUILDING CONNECTION WOMEN’S MINISTRY KICK-OFF LUNCH
Sunday, September 26th | 1pm | Garden Room On Kick-Off Lunch Sunday, September 26 at 1:00 pm join us in the Garden room for a meal, fellowship, and an introduction and information on all these different programs. Tickets will be available in the Garden room and will give us an idea of how many place settings we need – we want to set a place for each of you and any guests you’d like to bring. Tickets $1 in the Garden Room.
Coming this Fall! If you are familiar with the Family Bistro Night, then you will notice that Breaking Bread & Building Connections will have some similar flavors. What is it? An opportunity for women to gather with other women over a potluck meal to make new friends and connect with old friends. You will receive a monthly email assigning you to a hostess and matching you with different women. There will be a time for shared conversation and an opportunity for each woman to introduce herself and share a little of her history and story. What it is not: A small group. This is not a long-term weekly commitment but simply a fun way for us to get to know each other better. Why? Women of Grace of Christ, do you long for a deeper connection with the women in our church? Do you wish you knew more of the women that you encounter in the Garden Room after church each Sunday? Do you desire to give and receive encouragement? Do you like to eat? Then please join with the Women’s Ministry Team in Breaking Bread & Building Connection. When? The 2nd week of each month for a lunch or dinner. How to get involved? Sign up at the Women's Ministry Table in the Garden Room, to be a hostess or a participant.
ESTHER BIBLE STUDY
Wednesday, September 15th | Lounge Beginning in September, Grace of Christ will be offering the familiar “Weds@Grace” – a time of dinner & fellowship. The Women’s Ministry will have the 10 Session Esther Study from Beth Moore. The Old Testament story of Esther is a 16
Want to host? We are looking for hostesses who are willing to open their hearts and home once each month or as you are available. Hostesses will provide a simple soup or salad entrée (for 8 or less) and be given conversation starters. There will be a meeting for hostesses prior to the start date. Questions? Email Julie Grove at jgmggrove@aol.com.

$2,000 is Needed to Purchase a Motorized Tuk Tuk To Deliver Water Jugs
ISSIONS
Light & Life Water Purifying Plant Bécal Campeche, Mexico – 2021 Update Yakima Living Waters for the World (LWW) team member Monte Schilperoort, who also serves as a deacon and Mission Ministry Team (MMT) member, was able to share how the Yakima LWW team has been able to fulfill their covenant to the Bécal community of the Yucatan Peninsula. Clean and affordable water is now a reality, by way of the installation of the Light and Life Water Purifying Plant.
50-70 gallons of clean water are produced each day According to Schilperoort, between 50 to 70 five-gallonsized jugs of affordable clean and safe water containers are produced per day at the new plant which became operational in late May. However, the two delivery vehicles are pedestrian bicycle pedaled Tuk Tuks and are only able to securely transport a mere eight jugs at a time. The water must be constantly transported up and down the rough roads to deliver all of the available clean water. The hope is that a used motorcycle-like Tuk Tuk might be purchased for around $2,000. Motorized transportation would increase the amount of water that can be carried from 8 to 35 jugs which could be carried in the vehicle’s back bed, making transport much more efficient. Schilperoort shared a video segment (that was translated by Grace’s Worship team member Jahzeel Garcia and produced by Grace’s own Debbie Myers) of the actual water purifying 18
The water is sold at a minimal cost to the community and free water is provided to the elderly and schools plant located in Bécal. Hosted by Good Shepherd Pastor Abraham Colli, the daily operational procedures of the water plant (disinfecting jugs, purifying water, logging sales, record-keeping and transporting water) are highlighted by this video. The video also offers a glimpse into the life of this village community and the challenges of these people. The Yakima Living Waters for the World team is comprised of members from both Grace of Christ and Yakima Covenant Church. The Yakima team, thus far, have completed six installations of water purifying systems in Mexico. The team, shares a history of changing everyday peoples’ lives through providing access to clean water since 2009. Grace team members include: Larry and Peggy Allen, Monte Schilperoort, and Jeff and Peggy Steere. For more information, please reach out to one of the LWW team members.

Mission Ministry HONORING OUR HERITAGE
Great Commission Art Work Unveiled Months ago, the Mission Ministry Team of Grace of Christ asked artist, musician, and former First Presbyterian Church Youth Minister (1969-1977) and Camp Ghormley Director (1988-1997) Sonny Salsbury if he would consider creating a piece of art that would portray the history and future of the First Presbyterian Church of Yakima, now called Grace of Christ Presbyterian. Oh! And, the artwork should also incorporate the past and current missions and missionaries of our church.
Presenting “TO HIS GLORY” to Grace of Christ Church
Sonny Salsbury with “TO HIS GLORY” “This church is so precious to us,” states Sonny Salsbury during the unveiling of the art piece at the 9am service on July 11th with pie and ice cream served between services. “When the Mission Ministry Team asked me to portray the history, future and wide-spread ministries of this church, I thought it was a daunting task, but I wanted to give it a try and so we went for it.” Daunting is perhaps an understatement as the project morphed into a major work in both size (40” x 60”) and magnitude. To date, this is the largest piece that Salsbury has completed in his self-proclaimed “Grandpa Moses” style. Sonny undertook many hours of historical research as well as spent thousands of hours in his studio at his and his wife Linda’s circa 1904 home creating the art. Entitled TO HIS GLORY, Salsbury captures the essence and history of Grace of Christ in charming and intricate detail. Long-time church goers may even notice themselves cleverly woven into this painting. Spanning over a century, TO HIS GLORY covers the inception of the church in 1884, depicting the Shull’s Boarding tent located on Yakima’s Front Street, somewhere near where Grace of Christ church members Corday and Sharon Trick reside today. (You might want to ask the Tricks about a metal “triangle” instrument that was discovered in their historical dwelling that is said to have been used to call people to worship at the tent.) 19
The work also moves through the first-framed building (once a sheep pasture) of the church to the present-day site location on 8th and Yakima Avenues that was constructed in 1927. Whimsically depicted are choirs of all genres, youth groups, missions (ask Deb Myers about the Anna Jackman excursion) and missionaries, as well as church events and traditions. Look for the representation of: Trail Seekers, Adams Elementary, Mabel Swan, Madison House, Campbell Farm, Yakima Union Gospel Mission, Camp Ghormley and more. You will also see a rendering of Pastor Bill Williamson portraying Grace and Grace’s future as Gracia de Cristo and Grace of Christ become One Church. “Some years ago, when we had to change the name from First Presbyterian to Grace, some of my former youth group kids grumbled a little to me.” Salsbury reflects. “My thought then was the word “first” doesn’t mean that much to me, but the GRACE OF CHRIST is everything to me.” Well said Reverend Sonny Salsbury. Your heart, in addition to your talents and love for Grace of Christ, is one more reason why you are the perfect choice to fulfill the Mission Ministry Team’s dream of creating a masterpiece honoring our heritage.

DR. TIM AND MURIEL TEUSINK Aix-en Provence, France
Dr. Tim and Muriel Teusink
The Mission Ministry Team of Grace was recently honored to share lunch with Dr. Tim and Muriel Teusink. Traveling to the Pacific Northwest from Aix-en Provence, or Aix as the Teusinks simply refer to the region, the couple took time out of their busy schedules to present an update to the Mission Ministry Team (MMT).
The team was treated to a moving and informative synopsis of Dr. Tim and Muriel’s work through SIM in both Africa and France.
The Teusinks Ask That We Pray The Following • For continued health and strength in the midst of the epidemic. COVID numbers are improving in France, but we know that can change in these uncertain times. We pray the same for our colleges around the world and for you also. • That you will be an encouragement to our co-workers in France, as well as missionaries on the field with whom we have contact. It was a blessing to recently be with a young missionary doctor coming for home assignment who has been doing wonderful work in a challenging situation in Africa.
Both Muriel and Dr. Tim are fluent in French and are able to educate, train and offer a Biblical perspective (Medical Ethics) in the languages of English and French. The Teusinks expressed great appreciation to Grace of Christ for the long-term support, through both finances and prayer. When asked about their future plans, Dr. Teusink stated that over this past year, due to COVID challenges, the couple has learned to “hold things lightly.” However, MMT was delighted to learn that following their retirement in about eighteen months, the Teusinks are planning on calling Yakima home.

Community Life Groups FALL SESSION
The week of September 12 through the week of November 14 Life is better together, especially when challenges, thorns, and high winds blow unexpected. Grace of Christ wants to be a church of Life Groups, not simply a church with Life Groups. We believe God is leading us in the direction of Grace living out our purpose in our valley and world - starting with smaller groups in our church family. Community Life makes connecting with others easy. We have a variety of groups from which you can choose. And if there isn’t something that works, please prayerfully consider facilitating a group. Being in a Life Group is opening a door to not only getting to know someone new but a chance to be real with others – to do life together. Time each week to study God’s Word, pray together and maybe share a few laughs! We are gearing up to kick off our fall session and look forward to getting you plugged in.
HOW IT WORKS
Already in a Life Group? Great! You’ll want to connect with your group, choose a study for the fall (see some suggestions below), and let the church know if your group is open to more participants. Want to join a Life Group? Fantastic! Now is the time to
make Life Groups a part of your week. It is an excellent way to meet and get to know new people, or be reacquainted with an old friend! Sign up on our church website: www.YakimaGrace.com/life and fill out the short questionnaire. OR Contact Ericka at the church, 248-7940 x107 or ericka@yakimagrace.com, and she will help connect you with a group that meets your schedule!
STUDY SUGGESTIONS Living with Thorns
This fall’s all-church study will be on the book, “Living with Thorns” by Mary Ann Froehlich. Each week the leaders will have access to the study guides, your group will read a chapter a week and meet to discuss.
Sunday Sermon Notes
Find notes every weekend on our website or church app. Great tool to use during the Sunday sermon, to answer and dig deeper during the week and then to discuss with your group.
Previous Book Studies – “Romans”, “Aha”, or “Reason Which Group Is Right For You? Fill Out a Short Questionnaire at www.YakimaGrace.com/life
for God” by Timothy Keller. Your group will purchase books on your own. Let church office know your choice and we will give you the study questions to go along with each chapter.
A Study or Book of Your Own Choosing.
LIFE GROUPS
We do life together here at Grace. It is our hope to have everyone who is a part of Grace of Christ church be plugged into a Life Group. A small group of people who meet weekly (some might be less often) to study God’s word, pray together, and get to know one another. We have many groups from which to choose, or we can get you started facilitating something new! Contact Pastor Curt McFarland or his secretary, Ericka Clark, to get started. Camp Ghormley SUMMER 2021 RECAP!
After 15 long months of little to no activity at camp, Ghormley was thrilled to be able to welcome guests and campers back to camp! We started our summer with a wonderful memorial service remembering the life of Pastor Steve Barker. The Lord blessed us with a beautiful day that was sandwiched inbetween less than ideal weather conditions the days before and after the day of the service.
in an effort to avoid any issues with COVID (or any other viral illness). Some of those changes included fully outdoor programming (including all meals and meetings), small group cohort-based activity rotations throughout each day, required pre-camp COVID testing if not vaccinated, and daily health screening for all campers, to name a few. These efforts resulted in no known illness that we are aware of!
Summer Slip & Slide Fun at Camp Ghormley
Keeping Cool in the Ghormley Pool
The following weekend we hosted Outreach Camp with Grace of Christ, welcoming approximately 75 campers and volunteers for a two-day camp experience. While this was a new way of doing things compared to the usual weekend overnight experience, it was a great experience filled with the usual camp fun! Campers experienced worship music, meals on the meadow, games, bouncy houses, pool time, hikes, and great conversations about Jesus. Thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend happen!
Once we were able to get past all the new changes, campers were able to experience camp in all its awesomeness, with many returning campers saying it was their best week of camp yet! Our theme this summer was ROOTED, from Colossians 2:6-7. Campers learned from God's Word how to root their heart in Jesus to help withstand the difficult times we all face, and to help them grow strong in their walk with Christ. We're already looking forward to the summer of 2022, where we hope to be back to a full summer season! Thank you to so many of you who have prayed for us and supported this ministry. Your generosity is what made camp possible this year!
WHAT'S NEXT FOR GHORMLEY?
As of this writing (late July), we are looking forward to a short break in our summer schedule, before hosting several guest youth camps throughout August. Our fall schedule is beginning to fill, so our hope is that we will be able to continue to operate in a similar fashion to what we are now, as we, like all Americans, continue to hope and pray for a return to normal life and business activity in the future.
PRAY FOR GHORMLEY • Pray that God would continue to provide our staff and Roasting Marshmallows at Camp Ghormley For our own summer camp season, it was a short and sweet four-week sprint, where we welcomed 325 campers, with nearly every program we were able to offer this summer filled to capacity weeks before camp began. Our biggest disappointment was how many campers we had to turn away due to our short season and somewhat limited capacity in each camp. Many changes were made to our camp programming 22

guests safety from COVID or any other disruptions to camp Pray that our fall calendar will fill with retreats, allowing us to stay busy and stable financially Pray that God will continue to meet our financial needs as we look to the coming months Pray that we will be able to finish several important facilities related projects in process before winter comes Pray that God will lead us to the right staff members who we need to operate camp at full speed
