Advent 2014 THE GIFT OF SOMETHING NEW Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church of Yakima
Santa Claus brought very practical gifts to my house when I was a kid. He would regularly stuff my stocking with an overflowing amount of socks, shampoo, toothpaste, and of course, underwear. All of the puzzles, toys and video games were wrapped under the tree and always marked “From: Mom and Dad”. Brilliant parenting, right? Santa comes across as the boring one who shops at Rite Aid, and Mom and Dad come across as the cool ones who shop at Toys R Us. But no matter whether the present was Super Mario 3 or Pert Plus (shampoo and conditioner in one!) there was something thrilling about all of this new stuff. New felt good because it reminded us that all of the broken toys, empty toothpaste tubes and torn underwear can be replaced by something better. Part of the human condition is to crave the new and to long for the broken things to be fixed. God has done-and is doing something new-in the person of Jesus. The Gospel is the good news that God has not given up on this world, not given up on people, and not given up on any of us. Advent is the season in which we prepare our hearts to receive in a fresh way how God wants
Preparing for Christ’s Coming What is Advent all about anyway? Advent is a season of preparation for Christmas, which begins four Sundays before Christmas, and ends Christmas Eve. Advent is a word that means “coming” or “visit.” In the Christian season of Advent we prepare for the “advent” of Christ at Christmas. • We remember Israel’s hope for the coming of God’s Messiah to save, to forgive, and to restore. • We remember our need for a Savior to save us from our sins. The more we get in touch with our need for a Savior, the more we rejoice at our Savior’s birth! • We remember our hope for the second coming of Jesus. Jesus will be returning! Are we ready? • We prepare to welcome Christ at Christmas into our world . . . and into our hearts. 2
us to embrace this Good News so that this broken world might be fixed by the one who created us. Hope. Peace. Joy. And Love. Each of these beautiful words will help us to explore how good this Good News really is. This Advent we are going to be studying the first three chapters in the Gospel of Matthew in order to better understand who Jesus is, what the Kingdom of Heaven is, and how we are invited to join this Good News. Please pray that each of us would be open to hearing the Gospel in a new way this Advent.

May we each make some time this season to reflect on the gift of the first Advent of our Lord Jesus in Bethlehem, even as we eagerly await His Second Coming!

Associate Pastor — Pastor Cindy Carter For Such a Time as This… We are grateful to God for the faithful service of Pastor Jack Peebles! Jack has brought us through our transition into ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. Jack has also equipped our elders to truly live out their calling to be the spiritual leaders of our congregation. Even with Jack’s leaving, we can be absolutely certain God is in control and working out His good purposes here at Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church of Yakima. Acts 17:26 speaks of God’s providence. “From one man [God] made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.” It’s not an accident that any of us are alive at this time and in this place. God has marked out our appointed times and places in history. With the resources God has entrusted to us, we have the opportunity to make a profound difference in history, bringing the hope of the Gospel, and relief for those who suffer at the hands of injustice and poverty. In our New Covenant Partner Class, we look at 1 Corinthians 12:18, which says, “But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.”. We are all parts of the body of Christ here at Grace of Christ, arranged by God to carry out God’s good
Session Notes: Transition Team Begins Work Upon learning of Pastor Jack’s call to First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, our Session moved to form a Transition Team with the stated task to guide the Session through recommendations related to the pastoral leadership of the church. Working with the Presbytery of the Northwest and Alaska, this team consists of the following six people: Jason Larsen, Steve Hildebrand, Karen Bernd, Ken Marble, Barney Trick and Janet Krieger. They will be expected to offer recommendation on (but not limited to) the following:
work here in the Yakima Valley. Each one of us matters, congregation members, leaders, staff, all here intentionally by God’s providence. Providence is the means by which God directs all things – both animate and inanimate; seen and unseen; good and evil toward a worthy purpose, which means His will must finally prevail. So, bottom line is this: we are all here by God’s design. God wants us to work together to accomplish His good purposes of bringing people to Jesus, so they can experience His life-changing grace and hope, helping each other learn to follow Jesus more intentionally, so in turn, others will come to know and love and serve the Lord Jesus. It takes all of us doing our part! Queen Esther, whom we will study a little later in The Story, was brought to royal position, at just the right time to be used by God to save His people from destruction. While reluctant at first, to approach the King, Esther’s cousin Mordecai challenged her, in Esther 4:14, “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” As God’s children at Grace of Christ, we are royalty, positioned “for such a time as this,” to make a difference in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, schools and our community. Together we can make a difference! Will you accept the challenge? Joyfully in Christ, Pastor Cindy Carter
this charge. Listening prayer is guiding every decision made. A recommendation regarding our interim leadership has been presented to Session and will be taken to the congregation on Sun, Dec 7 at 10:35a.
1. Whether or not to call an interim pastor. 2. How to divide the existing Senior Pastor responsibilities among the existing pastors and staff until the questions of an interim is answered. The Transition Team is well on its way to undertaking 3

Student Ministries — Jeff Murray
We had a great time at our open house event last month which brought in $500 in loose change for the Justice Project. We had a really fun time out in the streets raising awareness of the issue of global human trafficking. Many people that I spoke with were in shock and disbelief that slavery still exists. Nearly 2 million children world wide are currently slaves with no freedom to speak of and heavy labor demands – not to mention forced prostitution. At one point, some gentlemen working construction across the road from our event called me over to question me about what we were doing. I was sort of expecting some mild harassment because of some earlier comments they made. When I informed them of what we were raising money for and that this issue ruins the lives of children, two of the men broke into tears and all of them began to dump change into my jar. Jesus Christ is always at work compelling us to love one another. Praise God! Youth Group continues to be an excellent source of fun and meaningful relationships. Keep an eye out for the winter calendar coming soon! Peace in Jesus!

Kaffee Klatsch One of the best gifts of the season is Jon Waite’s annual Christmas Kaffee Klatsch concert. Organist Extraordinaire, he’s been preparing for this since our temperatures were triple digits! If you love real, traditional carols (Move over, all of you nine ladies dancing and ten lords a leaping), this is one event you won’t want to miss. During this musical program, it will be clear that Christ is the focus for our Christmas. Find your pencil and calendar, then quickly circle December 18th at 2:00 p.m. for this very special treat. Jon will play his favorite selections for us. We’ll even have a couple of sing-alongs as we close. For a short while, you will be able to step away from the frenzy that can come with holiday preparations and slip into a world of joy and peace.
Following the concert we’ll have hot wassail and fellowship and maybe even a fa la la la la or two in the Garden Room. This is an event where you can don your gay apparel or ditch it for your comfies. Your choice. The only thing you need to bring is a smile. If you’d like to bring a friend as well, that would really be topping on the egg nog. As always, we appreciate it when you sign up at the Connection Center. Do come join us! We’ll be looking for you. Merry Christmas from your Kaffee Klatsch friends!

THANK YOU JANA ALDLERMAN!
THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF OUR CHURCH FAMILY IN YAKIMA Ronda and I have been able to faithfully serve the Lord in ministry with YWAM since 2009. We have trained hundreds of young people through discipleship, education, and worship, sending them into many countries with the Good News. A handful of those we have trained are now serving as long-term missionaries in nations such as Northern Ireland, Cambodia, USA, and Nepal, to name a few. None of this would be possible without your generous partnership with our family! In 2013 we were commissioned to serve at a local church in Southern California called Newsong that has partnered with YWAM for the last few years. While serving there for 18 months we helped bring a new staff team together to launch a campus in Santa Ana, one of the youngest cities in America. Our time in California helped posture this church for its upcoming season in ministry and strengthened the relational ties between Newsong and YWAM. This assignment will be finished at the end of 2014 and we are thrilled to accept the invitation from the founders of YWAM to Kona to continue and expand our work there. Aaron is being asked to carry leadership in YWAM Kona’s diverse worship community. There are musicians using their gifts in corporate gatherings, churches, prayer meetings, evangelism, training schools, performing arts, film, and recording projects, to name a few. Aaron is a leader who has experience in all these spheres and places equal value on each expression. He has been invited to provide leadership for this community to maximize the young artists God is bringing to the mission for greater impact around the world. Ronda’s passion for teaching and discipleship is such a unique and powerful gift to the YWAM community. Ronda has been invited by the YWAM leadership to be one of the key trainers of new teachers on campus. Ronda has a unique ability to attract young women and disciple them to a level of leadership beyond the potential they ever realized they had. Ronda will help identify, train, and multiply leaders that will have significant impact in the sphere of education. Your partnership will help take the Gospel around the world through worship, discipleship, and education. We are so grateful for your continued support. Sincerely, Aaron & Ronda Barker—Youth With A Mission
We are so grateful for Jana Alderman’s 5 ½ years of service as Pastoral Administrative Assistant! She has been an incredible gift to our congregation through some exciting and challenging years. She has been the right hand to our Pastors, helping organize and keep us on track. She has also worked with Session, Deacons, Ministry teams, Nominating committee, weddings, funerals, communion, Congregational Meetings, Presbytery matters, social media, and more recently, helping with publications, mass email and backup for Sunday Service preparation. For Jana, she saw her work as a calling, not simply a job. She gave above and beyond the call of duty. She will be deeply missed, but will still be around loving and serving our congregation as a faithful member. Until we figure out our needs moving forward for administrative staff, Diane Kearby has agreed to work Tues – Thurs afternoons, picking up some of Jana’s responsibilities. We will keep you updated as to more permanent staff needs. Thanks again Jana! May the Lord bless you in your new adventure!
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Thank you for your faithfulness
We are praising God for our Grace of Christ Church family, which is committed to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ, and working to bring God’s Kingdom here in the Yakima Valley. Thank you for generously giving your time, gifts, talents, and resources! With the help of our end of year giving, we hope to once again cover our expenses for 2014! Your staff and Session are committed to being good stewards of our congregation’s faithful giving. Our Session would like to make a shift in 2015 away from our dependence on our year-end giving, and limit our expenses to that which is given on a monthly basis. With this approach, receiving your Faith Commitment Cards proves even more vital. Thank you to so many who have made sacrificial and generous commitments to give to the Lord. If you haven’t yet turned in your Faith Commitment Card, please do so. If you prefer, you may also sign up online at http://yakimagrace.com/Giving.cfm. May the Lord continue to pour out His blessings on us as we step out in faith and give to Him. 9
