ANNUAL REPORT

2021 “Together at Grace, Loving God and Loving Others”

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Pastor — Curt McFarland, Pastor

SEE HOW MUCH OUR FATHER LOVES US GRACE OF CHRIST ANNUAL REPORT 2021 With so many changes, twists, and turns these past months it is helpful to remember who we are …

WHO ARE WE? We are, individually, beloved children of Almighty God. 1 John 3:1 “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” WHO ARE WE? Together we are the remarkable, fragile, genuine, broken, Holy Spirit filled and empowered, Jesus-seeking community of people who gather together at Yakima Avenue and Eighth to care for each other, worship God, and serve our neighbors and the world. 2 Corinthians 4:7 “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” WHO ARE WE? We are normal everyday people changed by the life-giving power of God so that we can live free, forgiven, graceful, generous, new lives. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” WHO ARE WE? We are people who believe that God is not only REAL but also deeply, passionately, in love with us. We believe that Jesus pursued us, saved us, released us, so that we can be His in this world. John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” 2

WHO ARE WE? We are men, women, of all ages, all backgrounds, all cultures, who belong to God and belong together. Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” WHO ARE WE? We are part of the invisible, God-ordained, humbly powerful, Jesus passionate, unstoppable Christian Church. When we get it right, and we sometimes do, there is nothing like us on earth. Matthew 5:44 “I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” • We exist to love and serve those who want nothing to do with us. • We exist to offer forgiveness and hope to those who are indifferent, and those who oppose us. • We exist to give away what we have, and even our lives, in order to bring attention to God’s extravagant love. • We exist to love God and love others. We may not know what the next ten years at Grace will look like. Honestly, we do not even know what tomorrow at Grace will look like. But we do know SOMEONE who does. I will not list here all the of the successes of the past year … yes there have been things to celebrate... but there have also been too many losses, too many changes. Instead, together with you, I will celebrate the truth that God remains faithful even when we fail. God remains faithful even as tears fall. God remains faithful as a pandemic endures. God remains faithful even when the world, our city, our homes, gravitates to division, accusation, and incivility. God remains faithful. As we move into 2022 I am thankful we have each other, and He has us!

Session GRACE OF CHRIST SESSION ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Board of Elders 2021: Jeff Arkills (clerk), Rosanne Bacon, Doug Bernd, Michele Elledge, Janet Krieger, Carla Kupp, Jeff Steere, and Robin Stuber. Pastors Bill Williamson (moderator), Curt McFarland (moderator), Alex Rule Board of Elders 2022: Jeff Arkills (clerk), Rosanne Bacon, Doug Bernd, Michele Elledge, Janet Krieger, Carla Kupp, Duncan McRayde, Keith Mathews, Trinidad Rivera, Jeff Steere, and Robin Stuber. Pastors Curt McFarland (moderator), Alex Rule In every Presbyterian church, members are elected by the community of faith to serve as elders. The primary role of an elder is to seek the will of the God for the church. The elders who have served us these past few months and years have prayed for us, waited for the direction of God, talked through critical issues, made difficult decisions, led and loved us, and have served us faithfully. It has been an honor to see their faith lived out during difficult times and times of anticipation and celebration.

WEDNESDAYS AT GRACE CLASS

From Cover to Cover: 9 weeks from Genesis to Revelation

This class is for those who know the Bible by heart, for those who are not sure where or how to begin, and for anyone in between! What are the common themes in the Bible? Is the God in the Old Testament the same as the God in the New Testament? Why is the Old Testament important? These questions, along with questions you bring, will guide our time together as we fit all the various pieces of the Bible together.

MEN’S BREAKFAST We skipped our January Men’s Breakfast... before you panic, take courage... we will meet again, and feast again, on Saturday, February 12th at 7:30am (typically the second Saturday of each month). For all men (including young men, sons, grandsons, great grandsons... as long as they can hold a fork). Great food, great conversation, a few laughs, some Superbowl trivia... and wisdom from our friends. Let Curt know if you are willing to help cook, set-up, clean-up, or help organize. Elders and Deacons BOARD OF DEACONS 2021 This year’s board of deacons consist of 26 individuals who love, honor, and serve our church body. They are motivated by their love of Christ and the desire to share His love, compassion, and services to those at Grace of Christ church. Those who have served this year are Michael Bealer, Ken and Jeanne Breeding, Connie and Joe Buckley, Janet and Doug Doty, Loxi Engebretson, Edith Figueroa-Gonzalez, Debbie Girard, Al and Nancy Harding, Rick Larsen, Matt and Sarah Miles, Cindy Peugh, Monty Schilperoort, Cathy Simons, Peggy Steere, Carol Stuhley, Kathy and Steve Stermolle, Barbara Toweill, Don and Jennifer Ulmer, and Jake Weber.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Over the past couple of years with all the challenges of mandates, quarantines, and illnesses, the deacon board must be creative in reaching out to those in our church and those who are in home or nursing care facilities. The serving of food at our celebrations of lives church receptions has been constantly modified and updated. Once mandates were lifted, we experienced a back log of funeral services. Thanks to the creativity, passion, and leadership of Peggy Steere she led volunteers to showcase a beautiful reception for families who were having funeral services for their loved ones. Putting on a quality reception requires 17 volunteers at each event. May through December of 2021 we hosted 13 celebration of life services. We served an estimated 1,582 family members, and friends at the combined receptions. We are thankful to those who volunteered to help the deacons as we experienced an increase in numbers and frequency of services. To those who came to help, you know who you are, and we are very grateful for your service. In addition, Glen Williams and Gary Davis designed, crafted, and stained timeless maple wood centerpieces for the guest tables in the garden room. The design is such that they are unique for any season of the year. Check out the attached New Centerpieces photo to see their handwork.

Lorna Dempsey, Peggy Steere

At Christmastime, the deacons delivered 24 live memorial plants to those who had lost a loved one in 2021. Twentyeight gift bags of Christmas candy and Christmas cards were delivered to those in our church body, who may not be able to attend church often. Twelve individuals who are home centered had a personal delivery of an Amaryllis bulb. The quick growing, no watering required bulb grew quickly and displayed a beautiful display of color throughout the winter. Due to the generosity of donations from the Celebration of Life receptions, the deacons gifted from their budget, additional tablecloths and battery-operated pillar candles that are being shared by other ministries in the church. $3000 was given to the Mid High/ Sr High winter retreat to Ghormley, and $2000 to the Children’s ministry department to design a Cozy Corner for grades 1-5. Be sure to visit the Cozy Corner upstairs in room 209 that has been created for the youth. It is so inviting; you may just want to stay there yourself. We will be welcoming six new deacons to be a part of our ministry for 2022-2024. We are looking with anticipation to their enthusiasm and joy that they show as they come on board. Welcome to our team! Respectfully submitted by, Cathy Simons and Peggy Steere Deacon Moderators

Deacons are serving communion and preparing the elements monthly. With the deacons assisting the elders in the communion service, it helps to ease the pressure on the smaller elder board. It has been an honor to serve alongside the elders as we celebrate the body of Christ and His gift to us of our salvation. 4

INFORME ANNUAL DE ALCANCE 2021 ¡Gracias a Dios el 2022 ya está aquí! Le damos gracias a Él por otro año de vida, por otro año de iglesia, por otro año de servicio.

OUTREACH ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Thank God 2022 is here! We thank Him for another year of life, for another year of church, for another year of service. It is hard to believe but together and with God’s help we have succeeded. 2021 was another year of testing for everyone in our nation and the entire world. People became much more creative and effective in almost all areas, they had to reinvent themselves to move forward, nothing seemed easy, but God provided the plan for each day, for each moment and situation. We are not going to deny that we had to improvise many times, but that helped us to be better as people, children of God, and to be able to love God and love others constantly because this is already part of our way of living the gospel. We always had the confidence that God would help us because for God everything is possible. Our Church, Grace of Christ, in connection with non-profit organizations like Union Gospel Mission helped us serve many families in our community, this included providing food, clothing and other resources for those most in need. This would not have been possible without the help of God, our church and our community. Together we are building relationships with other people to create stories and testimonies of transformed lives.

MI PUEBLITO Mi Pueblito (my little town) provided breakfasts for many families on weekends at Madison House, where we created a loving and joyful family environment for the children and their parents. We always start with a devotional, prayer and worship music before our meals. Our families were learning about the love and compassion of God, they were learning that God is sovereign and is the creator of the universe and that He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who came to this world to rescue what was lost.

Volunteers lead board games and other activities to connect with families. We use My Pueblito Library to share success stories and to encourage children to love and appreciate books, to study and dream of a career and to be part of the Youth Career Program at Madison House. We thank God, Grace of Christ Church, and all volunteers for sharing their time, gifts, talents, and the Love of Christ 5

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Gracia de Cristo with those less fortunate; for accepting God's call and for seeing the opportunity to work in the lives of the new generations, and for giving them another chance. Our hope and prayer is that these families transform their houses into houses of light. I know very well that with God's help we can help transform one family at a time. I should mention that we also support other important events in our church for the community such as soccer camp, and haircuts and hamburgers to mention a few.

ADAMS OUTREACH CAMP AT GHORMLEY Adams Outreach Camp at Ghormley in June was a success, many students and volunteers spent two long days on the mountain. The food, games, activities, and the Worship time were filled with the presence of God. We know that these moments are a gift from God and will be unforgettable times for each of Adams students, volunteers, and their families. We are praying that God gives us the opportunity to have another Outreach Camp this summer.

ADAMS OPEN HOUSE In August, our Grace of Christ Church had the opportunity to serve at the Adams Open House. We welcomed all the families who gathered at the school, volunteers from our church served food and shared the love and light of our Lord Jesus Christ. We were also involved in supporting Adams School Parent Night in October, November and December. Together we form the beautiful family of God. 6

ADAMS GIVING TREE

ADAMS DANDO ÁRBOL

Our Adams Giving Tree in December was such a blessing. Together with the school administrators, teachers, and our church volunteers, we gave gifts, toys and joy to 250 students and additional gifts to their families. You may not know this, but we couldn't celebrate this event inside the school, so we did it outside. Many people and cars came and lit the place with their presence. Our prayer and security teams were present, all our volunteers were in position and ready for action! God took care of all the details so that the plan was carried out and the promise to bring blessings to the Adams community was fulfilled.

Again, we thank God, our Grace of Christ church and all the volunteers for their love and support for the Adams’ families.

Nuevamente, agradecemos a Dios, a nuestra iglesia Grace of Christ y a todos los voluntarios por todo su Amor y su apoyo para las familias de Adams.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

LA ORACIÓN DEL PADRE NUESTRO

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom comes, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

7

Foundation GRACE OF CHRIST FOUNDATION BOARD ANNUAL REPORT 2021

CHURCH

Foundation Board Members: Class of 2021: David Thorner, Jim Bigelow, Rhonda Dolsen Class of 2022: Jana Alderman, Leanne Antonio, Tim Drumhiller, Steve Miller

The church building has been in need of some security updates. Funds were donated to have a new security system added to the south entrance and west entrance. This will add an extra layer of security when we have students in the building.

CAMP GHORMLEY

Class of 2023: Dottie Hildebrand, Keith Riffe The Foundation takes the responsibility of overseeing this legacy very seriously. The committee continued to seek the Lord’s guidance with all requests put before them. 2021 had an increase of $132,553 to the fund as a whole and a total of $69,000 was invested to support ministry requests. Here is a list of 2021 ministry requests that the Foundation invested in:

GREAT COMMISSION Last year the Mission Ministry Team created the Great Commission Fund. The Foundation agreed to donate $25,000 to be given as a match. In 2021, we again donated $10,000 to also be received as a match. The commission has reported great success and our church has once again begun actively sending out missionaries from the Yakima Valley. Please reach out to Don Stuber for more information on how to become a financial partner by calling 509-248-7940.

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS There is a fund in our portfolio that is designated for high school students or those already in college attending a Christian college. This year, support went to Lauren Alderman (Whitworth University) and Zachary Himes (Seattle Pacific University). If you have someone you think might qualify, please go to yakimagrace.com/scholarships and review the requirements.

New Camp Ghormley Sign

The Foundation has continued to provide financial support to Camp Ghormley. These past two years have been incredibly challenging due to the restrictions. The impact this camp has on people from all over is very powerful. The Ghormley Board has made changes and investment to make sure the camp will be here for future campers.

The Foundation has supported the improvements needed to many of the buildings. Some examples are: Spruce Cabin and a new building for their office. These are just a few ways that the Foundation is living out the mission given. None of this is possible without the financial support we have received over the years. Please consider a financial donation to continue the legacy, way after we are gone. On behalf of the Board, thank you for the financial and prayer support that the Foundation has received this past year. May the Lord continue to use these funds to grow His Kingdom.

Respectively submitted, David Thorner, Chairman

GROUP LIFE AT GRACE

We are a church family that does life together. We have a variety of groups that meet weekly or a few times a month – they gather together to share life, pray for one another, do a study, perhaps even serve the community in some way. Some groups choose to do a book study chosen by our Pastor. This winter our study will be Max Lucado’s book, Cure for the Common Life. Pastor Curt will provide questions each week, beginning the week of January 16th. You can purchase a book at the church for $13 (limited supply), online or shop locally. If you are interested in joining a group, contact Ericka at the church. 509-248-7940 x107 or Ericka@yakimagrace.com 8

Business Ministry Team / Personnel BUSINESS MINISTRY TEAM ANNUAL REPORT 2021

• Installation of security doors at the South and Garden Room entrances.

Business Ministry Team Members: Janet Krieger, Mark Baldwin, Doug Bernd, Tammy Nunley, Pastor Curt McFarland, Pastor Alex Rule “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

STEWARDSHIP God so loved the world that He gave... and He gave His best. God gave His Son and Jesus gave His life. God gave as an expression of His absolute love for us. We love because God first loved us. We give because God first gave to us. God modeled generous giving to His children. Our love of God is demonstrated in our actions when we express His love and generosity. Giving our best has been the response of the people of Grace in 2021. Generous giving as a spiritual response to God’s goodness has been modeled by our church family. Throughout the ongoing challenges of 2021 this body of Christ has stood in faith with great generosity, loving each other and our community. Your faithfulness to fulfill pledges made, and to give above and beyond, has allowed Grace to be able to minister to our church family and the community of Yakima. In 2021 Business Ministry approved use of budgeted and designated dollars as follows: • An SBA loan was applied for and received to support payroll and utilities expenses during May through August 2020. Confirmation of loan forgiveness was received during this calendar year. • Financial support of Grace’s preschool. • Provide a 3.1% COL salary increase to staff eligible for a salary increase. • Forgiveness of a $20,000.00 loan made, in 2019, to Camp Ghormley.

The Business Ministry Team is thankful we are a church that worships our God and shares the blessings we have received with great joy and generosity.

PERSONNEL Staffing at Grace of Christ evolved during 2021 to the new Pandemic standard. Basic services slowly returned to norm. Secretaries remained at normal duties with some added responsibilities. Janitorial Staff adjusted with the passing of Maurice Peugh. Marcus moved to full-time, with John and Dan are dividing the vacated responsibilities. Volunteers have come along side and assisted where needed. Preschool reopened in September 2021. The Preschool Board are responsible for staffing and curriculum. The school got off to a good start and continues to do well. Preschool Staff were provided with appropriate Policy and Procedure and Personnel Handbooks. Pastoral Staff changed with Pastor Bill’s resignation and Pastor Curt accepting to Transition to Designated Pastor with elevation to Senior Pastor in 2022. Request was sent to Nominating Committee to form a Search Committee for a Youth Leader. Youth Leader's Job Description is in progress and will be available when Search Committee is formed. Personnel Committee recognized the lack of continuing education for staff. A member of the Personnel Committee will be attending a Staff Meeting once a month. During that meeting Policy and Procedure will be reviewed annually. Continuing Education with appropriate harassment standards and Policy and Personnel Procedure changes, if any, will be shared. The presence of a committee member at a meeting will improve communication between the Staff and Personnel.

Respectively submitted, Jeff Steere Co-Chair

CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP ANNUAL REPORT 2021

IN-PERSON, THE APP & ONLINE WORSHIP: With God’s Grace, we were able to continue to offer both contemporary and traditional services to those who choose to worship in-person, on the web, or even, on their phone! The Yakima Grace App continues to be an easy way to watch online, as well as to stay connected with our Yakima Grace FamDebbie Meyers ily through notifications and easy access to publications such as Grace Alive, and the weekly Friday Letter and Sunday Flyer. If you haven’t already downloaded the App on your mobile device, simply go to your App store on your device and search for Yakima Grace – it’s totally free!

Greetings from Nathan Gross, Director of Contemporary Worship Ministries at Grace of Christ, and our whole worship team. While 2021 has been another interesting year, we are extremely grateful to be back in our beautiful building, worshiping together, while still offering our service online for those who are unable to return. We continue to Nathan Gross pray that, through this time, we are all able to draw closer to the Lord and continue to grow in our understanding of what it truly means to worship Him.

THE BIG OVERHAUL! Because online worship continues to be an integral part of our Family experience, this past August, we re-evaluated our aged equipment and systems for delivering our weekly services online. With the help of Austin Kent, we overhauled much of our sanctuary technology including new cameras, video switching, media presentation, lighting, team communications, recording and streaming services. Even though sound was not one of the priorities with this installation, we received several comments praising the sound in the house because of inherent improvements due to new cabling.

BLESSED TO LEAD WORSHIP: While we have seen a few new faces come, and a few move on, we are constantly reminded of how blessed we are to have the team that God has provided for us. Leading worship is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Lord and create an environment where others can do the same. There is both a great responsibility and a great blessing connected to this calling. We want it

The process? Dismantle the old; run cables, install the new, test & tweak, re-test & re-tweak, (repeat) and finally, celebrate with a Saturday morning breakfast and training! The overhaul would not have been possible without the remarkable teamwork of our tech team!

SPECIAL THANKS: Special appreciation goes to Dave Geho, Tony Hafner, John Yolo and Karen Laurvick, who volunteered many hours and offered to do the “grunt-work” in addition to technical problem-solving with creative thinking! The entire team, including Larry Hasen, Julie Hunziker, and Helena Ojanen, is to be commended for their faithful service as we continue to learn how to utilize our new system more fully. JOIN US! By the way, this is the perfect time to connect with our Tech Team since we all are learning this new technology together. Won’t you consider joining the team? Please connect with Debbie Meyers at 248-7940 x109. – Debbie Meyers 10

Worship Ministry Team Media/Tech to be known that our team is always willing and ready to connect with new members, and if you know someone, or if you would like to join, please let us know! We have really enjoyed coming together with our Church family from Gracia De Cristo this year, and it has been awesome to incorporate some of the songs and language that they are more familiar with. While it’s been a stretch for us as leaders and as a congregation, it has truly been beautiful. We are grateful for the opportunity, and really look forward to seeing what else God has in store for us there. We look forward to 2022 with excitement as we follow God’s lead in praise and worship! We pray that God’s love, grace, kindness, and mercy continue to fill your lives throughout this upcoming year. Thank you for being a part of our wonderful Grace family! – Nathan Gross

TEMPLE CHOIR ANNUAL REPORT 2021

Jason Wickson

For the Grace of Christ Temple Choir, 2021 was a huge improvement over the previous year amidst the pandemic and uncertainty. It is a blessing to be allowed to gather once again, as both a church and choir. I have learned not to take a general weekly choir rehearsal for granted and likewise, not to take the gathering of dear friends without great appreciation.

PRAYER MINISTRY ANNUAL REPORT 2021 PRAYER MINISTRY: In person Prayer Ministry has been limited because of Covid. In January we will be reorganizing intercessors and scheduling prayer ministry assignments for people to pray after worship services. We continue a weekly prayer letter and a prayer chain as needed. Our church staff prays at each meeting, and we have intercessor prayer partners who come to the church weekly to pray as well as many who pray from home. Our church is a part of the city-wide group which prays for Yakima monthly. Our church takes the 2nd Sunday of the month to pray 24/7. It is an honor.

“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care.” – Psalm 95:6-7 SOZO: Sozo is an inner healing and deliverance ministry which consists of a team of trained volunteers from the community. Currently we have 24 members on our team and offer Sozo appointments three days a week. Once the church was opened and guidelines allowed, we have continued this important ministry and have seen God do amazing things! Visit https://yakimagrace.com/sozo to learn more about Sozo ministry.

CARE, LOVE & SUPPORT: Throughout this year, our choir has supported each other through accidents, surgeries, physical ailments, illnesses, and family issues, both grievous and joyous. The love of our choir and the genuine care for each other is something that I have felt since my first visit to Grace and it remains strong. CHALLENGES: While this year has been a vast improvement over 2020, directing and maintaining the choir has been a challenge. We had one choir member move away from Yakima and several who have not yet felt safe enough to return to the fold. But we have recently added two new choir members and several who have been away, are coming back. BLESSINGS & GRATITUDE: I feel blessed to direct this amazing group of people. Thank you to Jon Waite for his continually inspirational music and his flexibility over this year. My gratitude is also overflowing to the staff at Grace of Christ. Thank you to each of you who make each Sunday work, in so many different capacities. Love in Christ, Jason Wickson 11

Due to covid we have not met as a committee, but we are thankful we have been able to celebrate baptisms and dedications with our church family. We have not had any celebrations of new members this year. We feel blessed to have the privilege of supporting all of these families as our church family grows. Lennon Melvin Baptism

Family & Children’s Ministry — Sarah Huck Family & Children's Ministry Director volunteer stylist asked me when the next event was! They also loved being generous with their talents, and I believe they were attracted to the presence of God here at Grace.

FAMILY & CHILDREN’S MINISTRY VISION STATEMENT Every child, every family, every day learning to love Jesus, learn Jesus, and live Jesus.

HAMBURGERS AND HAIRCUTS: Family at Grace held an event in August called Hamburgers and Haircuts. We had ten local stylists come from around the valley to provide free back-to-school haircuts for children in our community. It was an amazing day here at Grace! After being in lock-down and dealing with the restrictions, it was exciting to provide this for our kids and community. There was an atmosphere of love, acceptance, and family. Our Grace volunteers did an amazing job of demonstrating God’s love for each of the children and their families.

MAKING GOALS AT GRACE: In September, Family at Grace held a free soccer clinic for children and families in our community. It was exciting to have the YVCC Yaks women’s soccer team help with this event. The ladies not only taught the fundamentals of soccer and lead drills, but also loved on these kids. Our wonderful coaches, Alex and Aurora Rule and Jeff Arkills, had great knowledge of the game, and more importantly, their patience, gentleness, and love for each kiddo was amazing. Encouraging and coming alongside the children, they taught them important soccer skills, meeting each child on an individual level.

Monte Schilperoort barbecued hamburgers for lunch, and we were blessed by guest speaker Brian Jones who delivered a short but profound message. Brian shared the story of Bartimaeus, beautifully expressing the character of Jesus in his teaching and inviting the children and families into a personal relationship with Jesus. Over ten children accepted Jesus as their Savior that day. On a side note, every single

Monte Schilperoort again generously donated his BBQ skills, and we were privileged to have guest speaker Barry Rifle, whose passion for the gospel is contagious. The kids were captivated by Barry’s love for Jesus and his sold-out attitude. Barry ended his time by asking the children if they would like to receive Jesus as their Savior, and then silently led them in prayer.

Family & Children’s Ministry TRUNK-OR-TREAT: Family at Grace hosted a Trunk-orTreat the Saturday before Halloween. This event was a huge success due to the wonderful families and volunteers who donated their trunks, time, and talents. It was truly a great night to just love on the families in our neighborhood and welcome them with lots of surprises and treats. The non-profit, Foster First, helped facilitate a cake walk, and our very own Ericka Clark played DJ. This was a fun event, and we had over 18 cars participating as hosts! Our hospitality ministry served coffee and hot cocoa, and they did an excellent job of making the parking lot look cozy--white lights and everything! And no surprise, Monte brought his fire pit so we could all keep warm. The night was perfect. Families were grateful, and our volunteers were happy to be there.

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS: Family at Grace Wednesday night dinners, followed by activities for all ages, began last summer. While the weather was hot, the kids enjoyed games like water balloon fights and fruit baseball. During the school year, kids in 1st through 5th grades learned about the different ways God speaks to us; through His Word, other Christ-followers, music, nature, art and prayer. They also learned that His voice is always in agreement with the Bible. One of the kids’ favorite activities is to paint on canvas. They got to experience prophetic painting, an opportunity to hear from God, get His perspective, and then put it on canvas. Sometimes they asked Jesus to bring to mind something that was on His heart. Most recently the kids asked Jesus this question: “Jesus, what do you love about our Church?” The kids then painted what they heard or sensed. It was so encouraging!

FAMILY MINISTRY POOL PARTIES: Last Summer Family at Grace hosted three pool parties at the Gustafson’s house. This was a fun time to connect with other families, hang out by the pool, and enjoy some food. What I particularly love about these gatherings is there is something for everyone. You can swim, you can chat, you can eat, you can read a book by the pool, or you can be like Trinni and relax on a float. It’s easy. It’s chill. It’s a summer day by the pool with your church family. Family Pippens’ Baseball Night

LET’S PLAY BALL: In June our church family had the opportunity to go to a Pippens’ game together. People were encouraged to invite their friends and neighbors to join us as we watched some ball, caught up, and enjoyed the fireworks. And of course, share JESUS!

MOUNTAIN MEADOW CHRISTMAS: Our Family at Grace Ministry hosted the gingerbread making event and contest at Ghormley in December. It is important to our Family Ministry that we continue to participate and support Ghormley by providing opportunities for our children and families to be at the camp. We hope this will encourage children to attend Ghormley in the summer. Mountain Meadow Christmas

GRACE KIDS: The kids at Grace were excited to be back in class when we reopened KidZone last spring. We have been blessed by an amazing crew of teachers and volunteers who have been rock-solid and dependable.

Coming out of the pandemic, it has been important to provide a safe and stable environment for the kids. With so many unknowns the last couple of years, my heart for the children is to create an atmosphere of love and consistency, to come alongside them, and to help them love, learn, and live Jesus in their day-to-day lives.

Children’s Ministry, December 2021

WHAT A GLORIOUS NIGHT: In December we had our Grace Kids Christmas program, What a Glorious Night. The kids did great! They sang their hearts out. We were privileged to have Deb Wagner back to help lead the program.

COZY CORNER: In November our Deacons generously donated $2,000 to go towards a “cozy corner,” a space for kids to comfortably gather for Bible studies and small group time. The kids have enjoyed the fun furniture, a change from tables and chairs, as well as the bright art we were able to add to the room. Families also enjoyed the seating area as they gathered after the Christmas program.

Parents and families were invited upstairs between services to join us for breakfast in KidZone. It was a super fun morning, and I loved having that big room full of our families and kids. It felt like one giant holiday meal, with everything that goes along with that. Kids being loud, a movie playing, multiple conversations going on at once, adults eating with the kids – at the kid's table, milk spilling, someone laying down for a rest on our new sofa... I thought, am I at home? It was so great! And I love that the kids have the words of the songs and the truth about God planted in their hearts through the songs they learned. I love that these children had an opportunity to give a gift back to the church that gives them so much. It was a glorious morning! 15

Youth at Grace STUDENT MINISTRY ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Student Ministry Leaders: Jahzeel Garcia-Figueroa, Amae Merrill The student ministry program didn’t really begin until September when we started with our Fall Kick-off, and we are glad to say we have done so much in the past four months. In September we only had about 8-10 students coming to our Wednesday nights. For our first couple of events, we had about 10-12 attending (which included friends of our students). Slowly but surely, we are growing - as of right now, the end of December, we have a consistent attendance of about 15- 20 students for Wednesday nights.

Wednesday Night Worship in Our Mid-High Room

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS Our Wednesday nights start with dinner. Then we gather in the mid-high room where we have worship. Then we get into announcements, after that we invite one student up to the front to get interviewed, this is something we have brought back in order to get to know newer students and become reacquainted with those who have come back. Then we get into a group game to get any leftover energy out. We end the night with a video/talk and discussion. Over the stretch of weeks we have had together, we began a small study of the first five books of the Bible (aka the Torah). We mostly focused on the story of the tribes of Israel; how it started with Adam and Eve, to Israel’s struggle to get to the Promised Land, from Genesis to Deuteronomy.

Besides our regular Wednesday nights over the course of the last four months, we also have had a lot of fun events. From our fall kick off to the concert at the fairgrounds, our corn maze trip to our Middle School retreat, the cookie decorating night to our Christmas party, and all of those in between. None of our events could have been possible without the great help of our volunteers. So thank you to everyone involved; our Connectors and Leaders, the parents for entrusting us with your kids, and the rest of the church both staff and congregation alike. Also, a special thanks to our Deacons; who have generously provided funds for camp!

Grace of Christ Preschool — Becca Mailand yakimagrace.com/preschool

PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR Becca Mailand

GRACE OF CHRIST PRESCHOOL A Season of Hope and Change “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”  – Romans 8:28 I love this verse from Romans. When I look at the twists and turns our preschool has had over the past several years, it may seem hard to see God’s hand at work. There have been big struggles (the loss of a long-time director, teachers moving on, the pandemic lock-down and slow reopening). At times we couldn’t see how the preschool could even continue. We wondered how we could recover from low enrollment, teachers who left to other jobs, and yet another change in directors. The verses that come before Romans 8:28 are just as important to our story: “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” – Romans 8:26-27 We didn’t know what this year would look like, who would teach, which children would come. But still we prayed for God’s hand to be continuously at work – for Him to transform this school into a place where His love and blessings are at work and overflowing. Heading into last summer, we had six children registered and no teachers hired. We needed two talented, Godfilled people to teach our students. We needed three times as many children to register, in order to keep our school running. We needed a miracle. So we continued to pray for faith. We prayed for guidance and a way forward with the preschool. We prayed for each child God would bring to our school, oftentimes before we’d even met them. After a summer of prayer and blessing, we were able to start the year with two wonderful teachers, 20 amazing and vibrant students, a preschool board that prays unceasingly, and a church family that is supportive and encouraging. Looking back, our path (which we thought was crooked, twisted, maybe broken beyond repair) had been leading directly to the place we are in now. Another promise has 18

been fulfilled from His Word: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 We are looking to the future now, planning to add another classroom next year and seeking God’s direction for growth and ministry in the next three to five years. We ask for your prayers, support, wisdom, and encouragement in the coming months and years. The road still looks twisty and uncertain at times, but we will continue to follow our God – the One who knows where we are headed! – Becca Mailand Director of Grace of Christ Preschool

SCHOOL YEAR CLASSES 2021-2022 The start of the 2021 school year brought many changes, including a new director, a new teacher, and a teacher returning to us after several years away. We decided over the summer to offer one multi-age classroom and allow parents the freedom to send children 2, 3, or 5 days a week, depending on their age, experience, and readiness. Our school is having an extraordinary year. Our students have grown faster and farther than we could have anticipated. The flexibility in our classroom has allowed parents to find the best fit for their child, even after the year started. We have felt the support of our church community and preschool families rippling through our different events, fundraisers, and daily classroom time!

Grace of Christ Preschool ceive one of the best Early Childhood Educations this area has to offer. Families receive more than just an education at our preschool; they become part of our community, they engage in Grace of Christ’s Children and Family Ministries, and even make this their church home. Grace of Christ Preschool helps children develop awareness and confidence in God’s love and power. We foster a positive environment where students participate as a member of a larger group, practice self-control, learn to make friends, practice social-emotional skills, and develop a lifelong love of learning. The children who come through this program are well equipped to begin kindergarten.

CLASSES OFFERED 2 DAY CLASS (3 YEARS): This schedule is ideal for children who are 3 years old or have never been to school before. Coming to school for 2 days a week allows children to experience the routines and rhythms of a classroom and prepares them for an additional year of preschool or PreK. 3 DAY CLASS (3-4 YEARS): This schedule is ideal for children who are three and barely four by the start of the school year. It’s a great introduction to preschool and prepares them for PreK or Kindergarten for the next school year. 5 DAY PREK (4-5 YEARS): This schedule is designed for 4 and 5 year olds who are preparing to enter Kindergarten in the fall of the next school year. All of these students have had at least one year of preschool experience and can handle the rigors and routines of a more structured school day.

CURRICULUM: Our curriculum introduces handwriting/finemotor skills in a way that is simple, fun, and developmentally appropriate. We also focus on pre-reading activities, science, beginning math, and so much more. Each week children have a 30-minute music lesson. During this time, children develop musical appreciation and understanding and learn how to identify different instruments by sight and sound. Music also incorporates movement, direction following, and dramatic play. The classes also participate in 30 minutes of PE per week. This is a fun way for kids to work on their gross motor skills and body awareness. Playing games and running in the gym is definitely a favorite. CHAPEL: Mrs. Mailand leads a weekly chapel for all students. We are going through the Armor of God this school year. We learn how God equips us and protects us every day to live our lives for Him! We are also working through The Jesus Storybook Bible. Each week we read a different story from the Bible and each week the story points us to Jesus. Thank you for continued prayers and support as we finish this school year and look with hope to all of the students we will teach and love in the coming years ahead!

Women's Ministry WOMEN'S MINISTRY 2021 After a long hiatus, in July the Women’s Ministry began to meet and plan and we truly enjoyed seeing everyone! In the fall, during Wednesdays@Grace, we offered a Beth Moore Bible Study on the book of Esther. This interactive study featured nine weeks of personal daily assignments and 10 weekly group discussions with video. WOMEN’S RETREAT: In October we had a wonderful women’s retreat at Campell’s Resort in Lake Chelan. Robin Stuber led women into God’s Word, the exploration focused on God the Creator, God the Defender, God the Deliverer, and God the Redeemer. The retreat provided a place for spiritual refreshment and renewal for Grace of Christ women and their friends. There was also opportunity for fellowship (which many needed after 18 months of separation from organized groups); Time to make new friends and rekindle old relationships; Time for long walks; a service project supporting Habitat for Humanity. Many thanks to those who worked so hard planning this event. GATHERINGS AT GRACE: Women’s Ministry will continue hosting gatherings throughout the year. Mission Ministry “Equipping disciples to love and serve our neighbors” Grace of Christ is a mission focused church, sharing DROPS OF GRACE locally, nationally and internationally having a global reach. Loving in the name and power of Christ, Grace of Christ truly has a world-wide impact, changing lives for His Kingdom. The Mission Ministry Team (MMT) maintains interaction with and oversees distribution of funds to more than twenty mission partners and organizations.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021 The Mission Ministry Team (MMT): Don Stuber, Michele Elledge, Pat Erickson, Joyce Sagare, Rosanne Bacon, Betty Rosenkranz, Monte Schilperoort and Pastor Alex Rule devoted themselves to their mission statement of “Equipping disciples to love and serve our neighbors.” Despite facing the obstacles of a global pandemic, the Mission Ministry Team of Grace of Christ demonstrated a reservoir of strength and persevered — coming alongside our mission organizations and mission partners — to change lives for His Kingdom.

MI PUEBLITO (my little town): Springtime brought gifted educators Raymond and Anita Navarro before the congregation to share the concept of Mi Pueblito. An outreach ministry of grace of Christ, Mi Pueblito sets to establish a village-like atmosphere that is centered on Jesus, where families come together to build trusting relationships.

Moments for Missions featured Grace of Christ’s mission activity on a monthly basis. The purpose of Moment for Missions is to highlight the various local and global missions that Grace supports, as well as to provide education, updates, and offer ways that our congregation can hold-up these servants of the Lord.

CAMPBELL FARM: In May, MMT committee member Michele Elledge conducted an informative and touching interview with Campbell Farm executive director Carmanita Pimms. This turned out to be bittersweet for the Mission Ministry Team as Carmen unexpectedly passed away on August 21st. Carmen had recently shared an update with MMT at a committee meeting. Her infectious smile and enthusiasm for the Lord will not be forgotten. Project Mercy PROJECT MERCY: Grace’s own Kathaleen McFarland shared an update in June on the work of Project Mercy in Yetebon, Ethiopia. She also told a few stories of her time spent with Project Mercy.

LOVE INC: Executive director Dan Brown from Love, INC, kicked-off our Moment for Missions (M4M) in January, with Love INC also being a recipient of Gifts of Grace (formally known as Bags of Hope). In February, Lani and Michael Johnson of Blessings of Hope/Navigators in the Philippines, shared via video. Not only was Mike Johnson, CEO of Yakima Union Gospel Mission our Moment for Mission in March, he also preached the message to our congregation. Drawing from Acts 6:1-4, Johnson challenged listeners to, “Enact the Gospel in a way that matches the way we proclaim the Gospel” as Christians.

LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD: July brought Living Waters for the World (LWW) to the forefront with Monte Schilperoort, (a team member of LWW, deacon and Mission Ministry Member) expertly offering the latest information regarding the installation of the Light and Life Water Purifying Plant in Be’cal Campeche, Mexico. Grace LWW team members Larry and Peggy Allen, Monte Schilperoort, and Jeff and Peggy Steere joined with other Yakima LWW team members from Yakima Covenant Church to make this installation happen.

And, there is bright news to share. Following are some of the highlights from the past year.

YOUTH WITH A MISSION: In September, Garth and Caroline Gustafsons’ work with YWAM (Youth with A Mission) in Battambang, Cambodia was featured. Garth is an example of one of Grace of Christ’s own who was raised in our church, trained as a missionary, and is now living out his faith as a global missionary.

GIFTS OF GRACE: Closing out the calendar year, Adams Elementary was blessed with a Gifts of Grace (formally Bags of Hope) collection for back-to-school, and the Adams Giving Tree for Christmas.

MISSION SUNDAY YAKIMA YOUNG LIFE: Mission Sunday was also a part of the Moment for Missions line-up, taking place on Sunday, October 17th. For the mission team, this is one of their favorite Sundays of the year. Yakima Young Life area director Craig Hooper presented the message, WE BELONG TOGETHER. Hooper, known as “Hoop,” continued along in our sermon series Letter to Corinth and Yakima, sharing an inspiring and thought-provoking challenge to live in community. Young Life, one of Grace’s mission partner organizations. Grace has partnered for decades with Young Life to introduce kids to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. FRIENDS OF MISSIONS: On Mission Sunday, we learned from MMT member Don Stuber that although our founding missionary mothers and fathers went to great lengths of travel and sacrifice in order to fulfill the great commission and share the gospel, we can simply, CROSS THE STREET.

“Now we are ALL missionaries! You don’t have to cross an ocean to be on missions, but you do have to cross the street... cross the room... cross the aisle,” Stuber says. “And, love people with all your heart and when necessary, use words.” From this call to action, the Mission Ministry Team have established Friends of Missions as a way that ALL can get involved and bolster missions from Grace.

MMT ANNOUNCES FIRST-EVER GCF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Also, taking place on Mission Sunday, Don Stuber of the Mission Ministry Team presented the inaugural Great Commission Fund recipients with their funds. Holding true to its founding principle of Matthew 28:19-20, the aim is to: GO MAKE DISCIPLES! The awards are as follows: Annie Jameson ($1,000) for her ministry Eden Por Salud which creates jobs for disabled Guatemalans; Gracie Brownell ($1,000) hometown girl who is trusting the Lord for her mission’s destination; ACTS Program ($3,000) Antioch Christian Training School (ACTS) located in Tieton, WA to serve Inglesia Comunidad Cristina or Community Christian Church in Nicaragua.

HONORING OUR HERITAGE (and looking to the future) Portraying the past history of Grace of Christ, and looking towards the future, the Great Commission art work became a reality this past year. Entitled TO HIS GLORY, this beautiful original piece of art created by Sonny Salsbury adorns the hallway leading to our chapel. The work moves through the first-framed building (once a sheep pasture) of the church to the present-day site location on 8th and Yakima Avenues that was constructed in 1927. GREAT COMMISSION FUND MOVES INTO PHASE TWO After successfully meeting Phase One goals, The Great Commission Fund (GCF) is moving into Phase Two, with the goal of reaching funds of over $250,000. This goal will allow our church to continue its rich legacy of sending and supporting missionaries both globally and locally. The GCF is a legacy fund that uses only the interest earned off of the principle, allowing the fund to continue to grow and self-support into perpetuity. The money from the Great Commission Fund is used to launch young believers (1425 years old) from the valley on a mission trip; help send members of Grace of Christ on a mission of their choice; and to boast other missions locally or around the world.

Hospitality Ministry ANNUAL REPORT 2021 The LORD is FAITHFUL! Through it all, He remains steadfast in His purpose and plans of reconciling a fallen creation to Himself. Hallelujah! Who is like the LORD, God Almighty? Is there anything too hard for Him? Reading through the Bible the past year has only reminded me how relevant His Word is in each generation as the need of mercy and salvation persists into this modern age. As we continue to blaze a pathway through this era of Covid, we are so grateful for all the volunteers who have put their hands and hearts to the task of extending the welcome of Jesus through the various areas of ministry of Hospitality to those who enter our church over the past year. It is an army of volunteers each and every Sunday who welcome, greet, usher, serve refreshments, beautify, and celebrate special occasions and also facilitate various fellowship events throughout the year.

Moving back to in-house worship services at the beginning of 2021 was not without some challenges that had to be prayerfully work through. I am grateful for the church leadership this past year, and for the cooperation, patience, perseverance, and GRACE demonstrated by the congregants as all wrestle with the changes required due to the reality of living amid a deadly pandemic. We’ve had lots of lessons to learn in finding unity in Christ Jesus in the midst of our varied personal opinions, anxieties, grief, and frustrations. As Covid continues its ebb and flow for a while longer, may Holy Spirit continue to strengthen use in brotherly love and to see our unity in Christ Jesus so that our lives offer a pleasing fragrance to our LORD. May we respond with steadfastness in following after Jesus as He models obedience to love the LORD our God with all our heart, strength, mind and body, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. May the words of our mouths and the meditations of all our hearts be a pleasing and acceptable sacrifice to the LORD in the year ahead! – Linda Sorenson

In preparation for the Fall Kick-off, Hospitality volunteers gathered for a training and time of prayer for the church in August. Ushers were able to meet together with the new Head of Usher, Donnie Ide.

Camp Ghormley CAMP GHORMLEY 2021 As we near the close of a second consecutive “COVID year” here at Ghormley, we have so much to be thankful for. God has sustained us through another year of uncertainty, allowed us to begin serving campers again, and it appears that, Lord willing, next year will be a fairly normal year of activity here at camp, with the caveat of COVID’s seemingly long-term nature in our country threating to disrupt our operations at any time. But we do not lose hope, because we know God is bigger than any threats or fears we may face. Here is a recap of our 2021 year at Ghormley:

SPRING: The months of January through May were more of the same from 2020, with no normal business activity as we waited to see what would come next. In early April, we finally received the guidance we needed from the state to confidently plan for our summer camp season. With a healthy amount of “Lord help us!” prayers, we quickly launched into summer camp planning, condensing our planning and hiring season into two and a half months.

God was gracious and provided all that we needed to make camp possible this year. The other highlight of the spring was the continued success of our Ghormley Goodness meals program. This effort continues to bless people and provided enough revenue to help us get through the sparse spring months, financially speaking.

SUMMER: After a whirlwind few months of preparations, we prayerfully launched into a late-start summer season. Our first event since reopening was hosting a memorial service for Steve Barker. It was a beautiful outdoor service on a perfect June afternoon. We were able to hire a team of about 12 young adults who helped make camp possible in 2021. They were young but dived in and quickly prepared for the beginning of our camp season. We were able to host four weeks of camp

Camp Ghormley this summer, with a total of 330 campers between our traditional overnight camps plus our off-site adventure camps. Camper families were grateful to have their kids be back at camp, and we received almost no push-back to the COVID guidelines we implemented in order to help keep campers and staff safe. To our knowledge, we have not had any COVID cases at camp since reopening, and camp seemed largely normal throughout the summer, with the notable exception that we did 100% of our programming outside, including meals and meetings. As I reflect back on the summer, I am most grateful for the fact that I know that God used our efforts powerfully in the lives of young people at a critical time of need. Many campers reported that their faith really struggled during COVID, and that camp was just the thing they needed in order to regain their faith in God in the midst of this crazy time we all live in.

FALL: The late summer and early fall season brought more disruption to camp. The Schneider Springs fire, which started closer to the Chinook Pass area, eventually grew and moved towards the Hwy 12/Bethel Ridge area, forcing the closure and evacuation of the camp property in late August. This caused the cancellation of several large groups in late August and early September, and also displaced Ghormley staff for nine days at the end of August. This was a difficult time emotionally, as there was a lot of uncertainty regarding what to expect. Thankfully, camp was never truly in danger due to the fire, and we were able to resume hosting groups in September. The fall season has brought a slow return to what feels like normal business here at camp. We hosted mostly small groups, but it was a blessing to hear repeatedly from user groups how grateful they were to return to camp. We also hosted two Ghormley-sponsored events: Middle School Retreat in late November, and our Mountain Meadow Christmas family event the weekend before Christmas. Both events ran very well, and it was a joy to be able to have these events happen again, giving us confidence we can plan for a fairly normal schedule of events in 2022.

FINANCES: We are grateful for the continued strong support from our donor base. This has enabled us to remain financially stable throughout this year, despite continued revenue impacts due to limited operations. God has provided for our every need, and we remain hopeful that we will finish 2021 in the positive financially for this calendar year, which also happened in 2020. With many camps and businesses closing or suffering great financial losses due to COVID, we are grateful that the long-term financial impact to the camp has been minimal. We ask for your continued prayers and support so we can enter 2022 in a good financial position. 26

PROJECTS: One of the blessings of COVID has been the ability to accomplish numerous important projects while we have the time. Strong donor support has allowed us to have the finances to continue to work on projects despite the challenges COVID has presented to the camp. Here’s a sampling of projects that we have completed in the past twelve months: • Completely rebuilt our main campfire meeting area • Installed new camp welcome sign • Built an outdoor kitchen and dining area to allow for covid-safer outdoor summertime meals • Purchased and installed an outdoor sound system to allow for outdoor meetings all summer • Finished the installation of a second laundry room; doubling our laundry capacity! • Replaced aging HVAC, ovens, ice maker, and dish washing equipment in our Dining Hall • Made septic upgrades to allow for the renovation of Spruce Cabin into a staff home We look forward to 2022 as we continue to work to prepare Ghormley’s facilities for the next generation of ministry. As always, we are grateful for the prayer and support of so many in the Grace of Christ family. We WOULD NOT still be here and able to minister through camp ministry without the support of so many. God has sustained through two very difficult years, and we are looking forward to brighter days ahead!
