NEW ELDERS (AS OF JANUARY 2019) Brent Alderman, Jeff Steere, and Shan Trick (No terms ended for any Elders in 2018) We thank God for this body of believers that call Grace of Christ home. Jesus is in our midst! He dwells in our hearts, leads our worship, and accompanies us as we go into the world serving as His hands and feet. Even as things change in the church, He does not; our Lord is our firm foundation. We have a long, proud, history! Grace of Christ Church has been in our community for 133 years. Passionate, devout, men and women founded our church in 1885. Their devotion has been passed down through many generations. Our spiritual DNA is strong and time-tested. It is a DNA that embodies genuinely caring about each other. Every Sunday, and at various times during the week, we gather to worship, to join in small groups and to engage in service. We gather because we are family. We want to catch up with each other; to talk, laugh, share both joys and burdens, hug, pray, and wish each other well. As we turn the page on 2018 and step into 2019 there will be challenges, but for the most part, they are welcome ones. How do we better care for one another? How do we expand our ministry, especially to our own community? How do we better follow Jesus in our life together? How do we best grow our community of believers? We have the opportunity to embrace a divine moment, an opportunity to express what it means within our church family to follow and serve our King.

provide worship and discipleship opportunities. Our desire is to serve you with the love of Christ and in the highest degree, humbly asking for your grace, patience, feedback and prayer. We commit to pray fervently for you, our church family. We will continue to focus on and lead Grace of Christ with all our heart, with our soul, and with all our strength and mind, always following after our Lord. We understand you will have questions and may perhaps experience uncertainty as we move forward into 2019, charting a new course for Grace. We ask for your patience, your involvement and most importantly your prayers for our leadership and staff. Please know we welcome you contacting us. If you have questions, and we expect that you will, come to us individually after services; we will listen and answer you as best we can. We will work diligently to ensure your Elders are available in person to communicate with you. In his book Canoeing the Mountains, Tod Bolsinger, quotes author Margaret Wheatley, “It is possible to prepare for the future without knowing what it will be. The primary way to prepare for the unknown is to attend to the quality of our relationships, to how well we know and trust one another.” When Change Is Out of Control. Caring for each other, the Church, is our DNA. As we step forward to embrace our future may we love each other and our community with the overwhelming, never-ending love of Christ. friends, let us continue to love one another, for “Dear love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. – 1 John 4:7 ”

In 2018 Pastor Jim Marian and the congregation of Grace agreed to dissolve his call to our church. Going forward Session, with approval from our Presbytery, has identified a Designated Pastor to serve our congregation alongside your Elders, lay ministers and congregational volunteers. Pastor Bill Williamson has been called by Session to serve on staff for one to three years. At some point during that interval a decision will be made to pursue an ongoing relationship with the Designated Pastor or to form a Pastor Nominating Committee to search for a senior pastoral leader. In the meantime, our ministry goal will be to continue to worship our Lord, provide discipleship of our body, and serve and bless our community. As a Session, we have a renewed commitment to engaging well and listening deeply. We are excited to hear from focus groups in our church comprised of people who attend our traditional service and a second group made up of young families. We want to hear what is important to you and how we can better 2

PASTORAL CARE DEACONS After Pastor Cindy retired in June, I have had the joy of overseeing pastoral care, the Deacons, and am continuing to serve as an Elder. I came from a Lutheran background without a familiarity of Deacon responsibilities. Grace of Christ Church has given me a greater insight and appreciation for their service. Visit and Pray with Hospital Patients Provide Communion for our congregation, home centered parishioners, and those in care facilities Comfort and Support the Grieving the Celebration of Life Committee coordinates refreshments and lunch receptions following memorial and funeral services Community Outreach providing quarterly worship services at the Yakima Union Gospel Mission

We all have our favorite comfort foods or activities that we sometimes turn to in times of uncertainty. The same thing is true with Scriptures. Many of us have those Scripture passages that we take comfort in during times of need, or that feed us on a daily basis. For many, Psalm 23 is one of those Scriptures. Unfortunately, some only associate the 23rd Psalm with death, since it is read at many funerals or memorial services. The Psalm is actually about life and hope. I once had a couple ask that Psalm 23 be read at their wedding! They understood the message of the Psalm. 2018 was a year of both challenges and opportunities for many, both personally, and as a congregation. No matter where you are, I invite you to read and meditate on the familiar words of Psalm 23 and see what the Lord has to say to you as you keep in mind His care for you and our congregation this past year, and what He wants you to remember as we walk together through 2019.

RETIREMENT COMMUNITY MINISTRY

DIGGING DEEPER CLASS This class meets at 9:30am on Sunday’s at Grace of Christ in the Adult Education Room. Deep and rich exploration of books of the Bible take place during this time. Members complete reading during the week and then discuss the reading on Sundays. The discussions are accompanied with Digging Deeper application questions and looking at other compatible Bible verses facilitated by Ron Sanders. A study on the book of Acts was completed this fall and the book of Hebrews is currently being examined. There are about 30 members of this class and around 20-25 people gather for this study and fellowship. If you would like to become involved with this class or have questions, please contact the church office.

Grace of Christ assists with other local churches to provide a message and music to members of Orchard Park, Ponderosa, and Englewood Heights retirement homes. We send a pianist or musician and a speaker to provide a short service and singing to these thankful and gracious members of our community. We provide this on the first Sunday of the month to Englewood Heights and on the third Sunday of each month to Orchard Park and Ponderosa. If you would like to be a part of this ministry with singing, playing an instrument, speaking, or leading, we would greatly appreciate your service. We can even offer a class on how to address a small group. If this piques your interest and you want to know more, please contact Steve Schiewe through the church office.

GROWTH GROUPS

SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES

It was an exciting year for Growth Groups at Grace of Christ. More members are getting involved and additional groups are needed each session. We have fall, winter, and spring sessions that last 10-12 weeks. Growth Groups provide members the opportunity to Study, Share, Support, and Serve together while navigating life’s obstacles. We have over 20 groups that follow the sermon-based topic, meeting at different times throughout the week. The type of group varies, from men, women, couples, and multiple age groups. We hope that all who attend Grace of Christ can find a Growth Group, where they can Belong, Believe, Become, and Bless their lives as well as others! If you would like more information about Growth Groups, please contact Don Strother through the church office.

Our Senior Ministries is now known as the Fireside Fellowship Team. Actually, that name better describes our ministry of fellowship. During the year our goal is to provide opportunities for entertainment, education and pleasure for all ages inside and outside the church. We are always open to new ideas, new members and appreciate your participation. Some of the events that we hosted last year are listed below.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE COMMITTEE The Celebration of Life Committee made several changes over the last two years and are now seeing how it has stream-lined the ability to quickly put on a celebration of our member’s lives with greater efficiently. We have co-opted help from other committee members and the congregation when the need arises for a large funeral. This year we have held eleven funerals.

This has been a good year for our Deacons. We are currently seeing 20 Home Center Parishioners and will have a staff of 30 Deacons to minister to them for the New Year.

MODERATORS 2019: John Stolzenbach, Cathy Simons

UNION GOSPEL MISSION COMMITTEE

COMMUNION COMMITTEE

The Union Gospel Mission committee has held its meetings for the year. Several changes have been made at the Mission.

We came to appreciate the organizational skills of Ann Aldous, the head of the Communion Committee, when she was confined to a nursing home for approximately two months. The committee and several others came together and handled her absence and the Communion responsibilities with very little stress thanks to her.

New Hymnals our first happy change was to replace the old ragged hymnals at the Union Gospel Mission through the generosity of an anonymous donor from Grace of Christ Church

We were able to serve Communion to 1,894 people this year in our Sanctuary. The Prayer Sunday Communion total for the year was 526 people in the Fireside Room. Because Easter was the first weekend of April, it was decided to not do Communion that month, putting us at five Communions instead of the normal six.

Mandatory Service Rule Removed the requirement to attend the church service before eating a meal has been removed and has not negatively affected the attendance at these services

Length of Service the Union Gospel Mission service time has been shortened from one hour to half an hour

DEACON LEADERSHIP Lou and Ellen Bartelli retired at the end of 2018 and Cathy Simons began leading in 2019. Cathy Simons, John Stolzenbach, and Ellen Bartelli worked to ensure a smooth transition of leadership for the Deacons. and I will be sorry to no longer to be working with the “Lou Deacons, but we know it is in good hands. We are available to help the Deacons should they need extra manpower. Our next venture is in the hands of God and we will be listening to His call. May God continue to bless you, your families and our church. – Lou and Ellen Bartelli

FOUNDATION REPORT 2018

BUSINESS MINISTRY REPORT 2018 The staff and ministry teams of Grace were diligent during 2018 in seeking creative ways to be good stewards of our resources. Expenses related to programs and administrative costs ended the year 6% under 2018 budgeted amounts. Looking forward, both Session and staff are working prayerfully and creatively to align 2019 expenses with the financial support pledged during our recent stewardship campaign. With the dissolve of Pastor Jim Marian’s call, Elders made the decision to care for Jim and his family by extending a severance of six months’ salary; our Presbytery mandates a minimum three months. Should Pastor Jim accept another call before the conclusion of the six months the severance will be terminated immediately. The monies to cover the severance will be drawn from dollars received in support of our 2018 budget and will not impact ministry or mission budgets in 2019. Grace of Christ is blessed with a faithful family of believers who give generously of time, talents and treasures. You can further partner with us by praying for the spiritual health and maturity of our congregation. We are about loving those who worship with us and building each other up to go out into our everyday lives taking the Kingdom of God into all the places we go. Pray that we will be true to that mission and that we will honor God by upholding His church through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in “the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. – Ephesians 5:20 ”

The Foundation created and funded by earlier members recognizing the need to provide a resource for members to be able to obtain a college education and to create funding to help maintain both Ghormley Meadow and Grace of Christ. This year the Foundation board recognized the need to better inform the congregation of the opportunities to participate in supporting the Foundation. We have prepared some informational materials, and have begun to distribute. Your contributions will assist in maintaining the Foundation's ability to meet the needs presented to it. Donations are tax deductible and can be made by submitting through the present church donation process. Please note on your donation the funds are for the Foundation. The Board wants to thank Dr. Michael Taylor for his participation as his term ended December 2018.

TAKE THE NEXT STEP – DISCOVER THE GRACE OF CHRIST FAMILY! Next Steps is a four-week class (for believers or not) that explores the “4 B’s” that are important to life here at Grace as we grow together in relationship, faith, discipleship and ministry. BLESSINGS IN DIFFICULT TIMES

Annual Report

It seems incredible, but it is true, together and with the help of our God, we have managed to advance to the future. 2018 has been left behind with many beautiful moments (Kairos Moments) from God our Creator. Many of us have experienced many pleasant moments filled with the blessings of our Lord, but it is also true that some of us have also had difficult moments, and when we think about what it really means to be “BLESSED,” most of the time we think about the good things that have happened to us. We have the attitude of celebrating good things with great joy. We celebrate things like the birth of a child, our children’s graduation, weddings, promotions at work, birthdays, and all holidays during the year, but what is our attitude during times of trial, difficult times, and times of anguish? Indeed, these are the moments when we recognize the true need for our Lord and Savior, because it is through these difficult moments of testing that He shows us His Love, His Grace and Great Power. It is in these moments that we really grow spiritually, our character develops, we learn to trust in God and become very dependent on Him. It is during these times of hardship that we draw closer to our Lord and pray fervently. The year 2019 has arrived and is here to show new opportunities, new challenges, new blessings, which are fresh every morning. Our desire is to continue pleasing and serving God.

Here is how God reminds us that we must trust in His Promises and His Fidelity that are forever. Remember [O LORD] my affliction and my “19wandering, the wormwood and the gall (bitterness).

20 My soul continually remembers them and is bowed down within me. 21 But this I call to mind, therefore I have hope.22 It is because of the LORD’S loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness. 24 “The LORD is my portion and my inheritance,” says my soul; “Therefore I have hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.” 25 The LORD is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him, to those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word]. – Lamentations 3:19-25

Our desire is that together we walk hand in hand with our Lord Jesus Christ, celebrating every blessing moment and every test.

– Lamentaciones 3: 19-25

May God fill our homes with his presence, and fill our hearts with joy and peace.

ANNUAL REPORT We want to provide you with an update of how God has been at work in Gracia de Cristo this last year. It is an exciting time in the life of our church. There are many ways our church is sharing the love of Christ Jesus with those in our neighborhood and in our Valley. God is opening doors! We feel that God has blessed us with His vision and plan for Yakima. This vision is for a community that helps one another and partners together to know Him. By working together we can strive to be more like our Lord and His qualities of love, compassion and understanding so that we continue to grow as a family of one nation under God.

ANNUAL REPORT

ADAMS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Here are examples of how Gracia de Cristo and Grace of Christ are currently serving Adams Elementary School and the Latino community in Yakima:

ADAMS APPRECIATION DINNER: For the past three years, our church has hosted an appreciation dinner honoring Adam's teachers, staff, administrators and our reading mentors. About 130 people attend the dinner each year. ADULT EDUCATION: This past fall, we provided an adult education class for parents at Adams elementary school. The class was well received. It was a six-week course on how to manage money.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM: Our church started an after school program conducted at Adams elementary school which helped kids with their homework and focused on academics and character building. BAGS OF HOPE: At the beginning of each school year, our church organizes a Bag of Hope program for students in need. The bag consists of school supplies and personal care items.

BULLDOG HUGS-REINFORCING GOOD BEHAVIOR: Every Friday volunteers from our church reward students who have demonstrated good behavior all week, with a bag of popcorn.

EDUCACION PARA ADULTOS: El otoño pasado, proporcio-

DESPUES DEL PROGRAMA ESCOLAR: Nuestra iglesia

READING MENTORS: Each of our volunteers works with up to

three kids a week for 30 minutes helping them to read.

TRAIL SEEKERS: Our church provides a safe place for at-risk

kids to meet with adult volunteers. Sixty to seventy elementary and middle school students meet once a week during the school year to learn about God, Jesus, do arts and crafts, have a snack and play games.

BUSCADORES DE CAMINOS: Nuestra iglesia proporciona

Hospitality Ministry COOKIES/REFRESHMENTS

GREETERS

A huge THANKS to the entire congregation for their faithful contributions of cookies each week and the team of volunteers who host at the refreshment table! What a great way for our entire congregation to extend fellowship with new guests by inviting them linger in the Garden Room a bit longer over some refreshments and conversation.

What a blessing it is to meet and shake hands with guests and congregants as they enter the doors of Grace of Christ. The opportunity to be a greeter is for everyone who calls Grace of Christ home. Greeters are needed at our three main entrances prior to the 9 am and 11 o’clock services.

EVENTS Events are a fun way to come together as a church family as well as a great opportunity to extend an invitation to others that Grace of Christ is a place where they can Belong. Several successful events were hosted in 2018 in partnership with other church ministries. Some of these events included hosting the Regional ECO Gathering, Jim’s installation and Cindy’s retirement. Fall brought the well attended All-Church Picnic Extravaganza with Ministry Fair, games, prizes and music, and then the Annual Thanksgiving Potluck. Don’t forget the Seahawk Tailgating Party!

PARKING LOT GREETERS/SECURITY Added in 2018 was a second division of greeters – those who welcome people at the parking lot and drop off area. Having a visible presence in the parking area is a great deterrent for potential car prowls while everyone is inside during a service. We definitely need more volunteers to take a turn from time to time in this important place of serving.

PALM SUNDAY

ISSUE

Grace Kids shared “HALLELUJAH! What a Savior!” with the congregation on Palm Sunday. It was a special morning of worship through song and word as the children presented the story of our amazing Savior and His great redeeming love for us!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY MISSION STATEMENT Glorifying God through fostering each child’s desire to know and love Jesus Christ in a personal way.

DIRECTOR Melissa Gray ASSISTANTS: Alli Weide and Jenifer Knight

SHIPWRECKED VBS We had over 250 children and over 100 volunteers at Vacation Bible School as children were immersed in God's great love and discovery that God rescues us even in the midst of life circumstances. Twenty-five children went home with Bibles who previously did not have a Bible of their own, and the prayer tent provided many wonderful opportunities for children to experience God's amazing love for them.

CORE VALUES Impact the children with the message of Christ’s love for them. Each child knows that God is real and that a personal relationship with Him gives meaning to life. All children feel a warm sense of belonging to their church family and each child feels welcome and wanted. Support the family in their responsibility for the spiritual development and growth of their child. Develop, nurture, teach, and guide children to become disciples for Christ.

SUNDAY MORNING GRACE KIDS

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The children presented a “Crazy – Busy – Peaceful Holy Night” as they told the story of the birth of our Savior and how He alone brings peace in the midst of a crazy, busy season.

MISSION AND OUTREACH Grace Kids continue to support the Yakima Fire Department each summer during VBS by collecting refreshments for our hardworking firefighters. It is a joy to have their department join our VBS celebration on the last day of VBS with firetrucks and their team to pray for them and present the generous donations. Together with the congregation, Grace Youth and Children’s Department were able to present 200 gifts to children at Adams Elementary with a Christmas celebration at the school sharing dinner, music, and the story of Christmas with their families. This was our third year partnering with Adams to share the joy of Jesus and Christmas with the children at Adams. Grace Kids continues to support our friend Evi through Compassion International as we offer financial and prayerful support. 12

Sunday mornings are thriving in KidZone with worship, fun games, and hands on lessons. We spent the year digging into Discipleship as we took a journey through God’s word and discovered how God uses these lessons from long ago in our lives today. The children love their student store where they earn tokens through scripture memorization, attendance, bringing a friend, and bringing their Bible each week.

EARLY LEARNING ZONE ELZ COORDINATOR: Monnie Miller Monnie Miller and her amazing staff continue to provide the highest quality love and care for our youngest children ages birth through Kindergarten. Because of this wonderful ministry, our church families are able to participate in many programs and classes knowing that their children are safe and lovingly cared for.

VOLUNTEERS

YOUTH BANDS

I want to begin this update by saying I am so thankful to all the people who support our Student Ministry! Grace of Christ Church does an amazing job of emphasizing the importance of youth in our community, and it shows in our lives and in our Student Ministry! In Jeremiah it says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” In this season, there is much for which we are hopeful. We have an AMAZING staff of wonderful people who invest in the lives of our children weekly. In our vision-casting meeting, we had 12 adult leaders attend, along with the support of another three who could not make it. God uses these people to breathe new life into this ministry. I am excited and blessed to see how He is using them to prosper our ministry, and give hope to our community. With that in mind, here are some of the amazing things that are happening.

I am personally excited about this! We currently have two youth bands that play regularly in the community. Many of the youth we have trained also help out with Sunday morning services. We started this year with a group of novice players who have really grown their skills this year to form a middle school band. They had their first opportunity to play for the congregation and it went amazingly well!

ASSISTANT Ali Rose Hildebrand The hiring of Ali Rose Hildebrand has been a tremendous highlight of 2018! She is very positive and is fully committed to the work here at Grace of Christ. She really understands the DNA of our church and the ministry, and strives to make it the best it can be.

YOUTH GROUPS We have seen a lot of growth over this year, both in numbers and in relationships with the Lord! 23 new middle school and 11 new high school students came to our church this year. With youth attendance, there have been over 50 in attendance to Encounter on a weekly basis. We currently have 115 enrolled in both programs! On the weekend before Christmas, we expected numbers to drop, but actually had more kids than a normal night (55)! God is definitely growing this group in size. Big things are happening here. With youth growing deeper, a youth leadership team has formed to have a Peer Ministry. This is a pilot year, so we chose 12 students to be a part of this and have partnered them up with adult mentors from our congregation, which we hope will turn into lifelong relationships in the Church! 13

MISSION COFFEE ROASTERS When we were asked to run the coffee stand at the church, we didn’t realize how great of an opportunity this would be! The coffee shop has been open for 3 months and the youth are doing an amazing job! The best part of this is the drive behind Mission Coffee Roasters; our goal is to be a locally sourced, and globally minded ministry that helps connect the community to the Mission Ministry at Grace of Christ. Our coffee comes from countries where our missionaries are from, and we raise awareness for missions at our Karpos: Live! Coffee House every month. All of the money raised will help with missions, both providing funds for ministries, as well as opportunities for youth to attend missions trips. In January, we had our first Mission Trip meeting with the plan to assist Project Mercy in Yetebon, Ethiopia.

EVENTS First-ever, multi-church rally held “Rally in the Valley” Monthly Coffee Houses for all ages “Karpos: Live!” Believe Conference for growing faith in Middle School Youth Camping Ministry (Middle School and Water Ski Camp) Served at Camp Hope, Northwest Harvest, MOPS Dinner, Ghormley Benefit, and Union Gospel Mission Took youth on ski trip, Boulder Cave, Three Christian Concerts, Journey to Bethlehem, and more! Participated in Ash Wednesday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Services.

GRACE OF CHRIST PRESCHOOL For the past 39 years, Grace of Christ Preschool has welcomed families from around the Yakima Valley to learn about God’s word and receive one of the best Early Childhood Educations the Yakima Valley has to offer. Families receive more than just an education at Grace of Christ Preschool; they become part of our community, they engage in Grace of Christ’s Children and Family Ministries, and often make this their church home. Grace of Christ Preschool helps children develop awareness and confidence in God’s love and power. We encourage a positive self-image so that children may develop confidence in their God given abilities. We foster a positive environment where students participate as a member of a larger group, practice self-control, learn methods to resolve conflicts in a positive manner, and develop a lifelong love of learning. The children who come through this program are well equipped to begin kindergarten. 14

MUSIC: Each week the children have a 30-minute music lesson with their teachers. During this time, children develop musical appreciation, understanding and learn how to identify different instruments by sight and sound. Music also incorporates movement, following directions, and dramatic play. The preschool students also give an Easter and Christmas performance each year for their families and friends. PHYSICAL EDUCATION: The 4-year old and Pre-K classes participate in 30 minutes of PE per week. Preschool parent and board member, Shannon Carlson, who has her M.S. in Health Education, teaches P.E. MISSION PROJECTS: Throughout the year, the preschool collects food for NW Harvest. In November, we join with the congregation by participating in Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox Drive for Operation Christmas Child. SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID: Through your generous donations, we are able to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a high quality, Christ-centered education regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Families who receive tuition assistance volunteer time back to our program.

As a result of her own colorful journey with God, a deep love of study and words, and a passion for people, Emily loves nothing more than to lead others into the fullness of life that Jesus offers Emily Jamieson by way of His Word. She shares vulnerably from her own life in ways that will make you laugh and cry, know yourself and God better, and cause you to experience freedom! We are a small committee – we could not accomplish what we do, without the support of all the volunteers who come help us! Thank you to all the women who help us fulfill our mission statement: “Providing opportunities and encouragement for women to be intentional about their faith” under the umbrella of the Church’s “A place for everyone to Belong. Believe. Become. Bless.”

EVENTS BETH MOORE: Beth Moore, Living Proof LIVE!, in Seattle. In early February, we ventured to the Overlake Christian Church with the church van to experience this event. We followed up with The Quest study by Beth Moore. She moves at great speed and covers great amounts of information in LARGE bites; the book moves at the same lighting pace. We would like to offer this study again over a longer period for better digestion! WHY THE QUEST?: The crooked punctuation mark at the end of a sentence speaks of curiosity, interest, and perhaps doubt. A question is an invitation to vulnerability, to intimacy. The Bible does not shy away from such an invite. Over and over we see the people of God asking questions of their Creator. We also see the God of the universe asking questions of His creation. The Quest is a challenge to accept the invitation. Learn to dig into the Word, to respond to the questions of God, and to bring your questions before Him. Let the crooked punctuation mark be the map that points you into a closer relationship with the Father.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC DIRECTOR

ISSUE

Nathan Gross In July, we welcomed Nate as our new Contemporary Worship Director – along with his talented family: wife, Sara and kids, Kaytlin, Kolton and Korban! Nate loves to meet with folks interested in joining the worship team as he continues to build teams that serve once or twice a month.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC DIRECTOR Jason Wickson In December, we welcomed Jason as our new Traditional Worship Director – along with wife, Naomi – both are extremely talented musicians! Retiring Temple Choir Director, Roz Strang and husband, John plan to remain in choir. We are thankful for her strong leadership over these last few years. Our choir grew in 2018 - five new people and two have returned from extended absences. Not only has Temple Choir sung service music and anthems regularly throughout the year, we’ve also fellowshipped together, fed the youth, and upheld each other in weekly prayer. It has been a busy, full and fun year.

GRACE TECHNOLOGY NETWORK CABLING: high speed cabling was run individually to offices to bypass the bottleneck of network traffic through older, single line runs to the main server, thus eliminating several unmanaged switches and improving network speed, health, monitoring and security. NEW PHONE SYSTEM: Building on the infrastructure upgrades begun in 2017 and continued in 2018, a new VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone system was installed to replace our aging & dysfunctional phones – with a monthly savings of several hundred dollars per month. HDMI VIDEO SWITCHING: the first phase of replacing our broken analog video network in December with an HDMI video switcher and digital cabling is already resulting in better screen color and clarity in the sanctuary.

JOINT CHURCH FAMILY SERVICES On September 9 (Fall Kickoff) and November 18 (Thanksgiving), our Church family came together for a joint worship service followed by a festive time of fun, food and fellowship hosted by our Hospitality Ministry Team. Folks always comment that they are blessed when we come together as one Church Family to worship and enjoy each other’s company!

We pray that our contemporary, traditional and Spanish services provide a place to BELONG as folks come together to worship. That God would use these times to reveal Himself so that many may BELIEVE and come into a saving relationship with Jesus; that we would be challenged in our faith as we BECOME growing disciples of Jesus; and, that we would be encouraged to go out into our families, the community and the world to BLESS others with His Love.

Our Sozo healing ministry is thriving, reaching people in our church as well as throughout the community.

Mission Ministry MISSION SUNDAY TAKING THE GOSPEL TO THE WORLD

FALL MINISTRY FAIR

An avenue to showcase and highlight Grace’s mission partners and mission organizations, Mission Sunday coincided with World Communion Sunday. The Mission Ministry Team also had the opportunity to host Central Washington Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Area Director, Barry Reifel, who presented the message at all three services. Alex Rule served as a real-time translator for the Gracia de Cristo service. Drawing from his athletic and coaching resume, Reifel urged congregants to “Look for the Stadium Lights... and to stand out in the darkness.” Reifel’s well-received sermon inspires us to pierce the darkness and to seek the light that leads to life. Reifel’s message was based upon Matthew 5:14-16. Reifel commended the mission partners and mission organizations that were represented in the Garden Room for reflecting His light and for taking the Gospel to others.

MISSION PARTNER VISITS

Mission Ministry Team joined other Grace ministries to participate in Grace of Christ’s first-ever Fall Ministry Fair. Hosted by Grace’s Hospitality Ministry Team (HMT), we had the opportunity to share with our congregation some of the ways that the Mission Ministry Team is involved locally, nationally and internationally.

FUNDRAISER EVENTS Through the Lord’s provision, the Mission Ministry Team was able to host and provide table sponsorship at some worthwhile fund-raising events. This included the Yakima Union Gospel Mission (Evening of Hope) and Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp (A Place to Belong).

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME All in all, Grace’s Mission Ministry Team has experienced a very rewarding and successful year and is looking forward to seeing the Lord work in a mighty way throughout 2019.

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp MISSION STATEMENT “To provide an exceptional camping experience in a beautiful mountain setting where lives are changed by Jesus.” The year of 2018 at Ghormley was a year filled with growth, excitement, challenges, and much change. Through it all, God was faithful to His ministry here at Ghormley, allowing us to serve approximately 4,500 people during the year. Below are some of the highlights from a memorable year of ministry here at Ghormley.

MOTHER DAUGHTER WEEKEND April brought us our second annual Mother Daughter weekend. Approximately 25 mothers and daughters joined us for a memorable weekend of crafts, food, games, worship, and quality time as family! We are looking forward to hosting this event again this spring, to be held April 12-14.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Joel Whitehead January 2018 brought the first big transition of the year when Tim Acton stepped out of the role of Executive Director, with me (Joel Whitehead) being elevated to the position. After completing my Masters in Camp Administration in the Fall of 2017, I was humbled and excited to be asked to step into this role of leadership here at Ghormley. Tim continued on as the Maintenance Director, which was a huge blessing to me and helped me transition into this new role.

STAFF TRANSITIONS

FUNDRAISER, A PLACE TO BELONG

The Fall of 2018 brought a season of major staff transition. After 25 years of faithful service, Tim and Cindy Acton announced their retirement from the ministry of Ghormley. In addition, Jubal and Meridith Gust resigned from the position of Food Service Director to pursue other callings and prepare for the birth of their first child. We will miss them dearly, but are excited for these new seasons of life for each of them. God was faithful in a major way by providing skilled and passionate replacements for each open position. Eferon Betancourt (Wife: Erin, Daughter: Novalee) is our new Maintenance Director, Jeremy Poteet (Wife: Wendy) is our new Food Service Director, and Spencer Hallenbeck is our new Housekeeping Coordinator. Each of these individuals brings a wealth of passion, skill, love, and a history with Ghormley to their positions. Be sure to greet these new staff when you next visit Ghormley!

DEVELOPMENT AND FUNDRAISING CONSULTANT Another important step for our ministry took place at the end of April. The Ghormley Board retained the services of a development and fundraising consultant, Ron Frey, to help assess Ghormley’s donor and development needs, as well as to consider ways to strengthen Ghormley for the future. Ron made an excellent presentation to our Board on April 26th, which included recommendations and plans for future development work at Ghormley. We are incredibly grateful to the Lord for Ron’s continuing work with our Board and Staff. 20

September 27th marked a historic event in the life of the camp. For the first time, we held a fundraising event, at Grace of Christ, which far exceeded our greatest expectations! Approximately 160 individuals joined us for an evening of worship, fun, great food, and support of the ministry of Ghormley. Most exciting is that $83,000 was raised! A portion of that money will be used to complete a cabin renovation project this spring, while the remainder supported the overall work and ministry development of Ghormley.

SUMMER MINISTRY The 2018 summer was a wonderful summer of ministry, with nearly 800 campers attending camp! 135 campers gave their life to Christ for the first time, with hundreds more re-committing to follow after Jesus. Perhaps most impressively, over 90% of our campers told us they feel valued at camp, and feel they belong at camp, while 87% of our campers told us their walk with God grew at camp. This is incredibly encouraging to know that 9/10 campers are being profoundly impacted by the ministry that happens here at Ghormley!

Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp THANKSGIVING AT GHORMLEY & MOUNTAIN MEADOW CHRISTMAS

YOU ARE WELCOMED!

We ended the year by hosting Thanksgiving Dinner at Ghormley, as well as Mountain Meadow Christmas. 64 people joined us for Thanksgiving, with one adult guest commenting that the combination of the worship, the scenery, the family, and the food made it the best Thanksgiving she could ever remember! 103 people joined us for Mountain Meadow Christmas for a fun day of sledding, great food, crafts, family fun, and worship of our Savior!

2018 truly was a memorable year at Ghormley, one that I believe set the tone for an exciting future of growth and prosperity here at camp. We are eagerly anticipating what God wants to do here in 2019, and look forward to sharing news of God’s amazing work with you! If you haven’t been to camp in a while, be sure to stop by. We’d love to see you. Happy New Year, and God Bless you in 2019. In Christ, Joel Whitehead Executive Director
