DO I HAVE A LIFE WORTH IMITATING? When it comes to being a disciple (follower or learner) of Jesus, perhaps one of the most challenging and convicting questions we can ask ourselves is this, “Do I have a life worth imitating?” Not a perfect life, or a life without pain, but a life that produces fruit, the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control – Galatians 5:22-23), essentially a life that produces the character of Jesus in us. In John 15, Jesus says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful… Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me… apart from me you can do nothing… This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” The only way that we can produce fruit is if we spend time abiding with Jesus. That takes time and intentionality. We live in a world that continually makes more demands, offers more options, and has increasing expectations. The result is that we become busier, and experience more stress, even if we do nothing different from one year to the next. Our world also highly values productivity. God created us to work, and work is good – we all need something meaningful to do. Yet overwork is destructive. Breen and Cochram, in Building a Discipling Culture, say, “On the first full day of existence for Adam and Eve, God rested. All of creation took a well-deserved break in activity. This was our first full day, a day of rest. Then the work began. From this we see an important principle of life: we are to work from our rest, not rest from our work. We pride ourselves on our strong work ethic, even using it as a sign of godliness. The true sign of godliness – imitating God – is to pattern our lives after Him. And for God, rest is vitally important. As a matter of fact, rest from our activities is listed in God’s 2

Top Ten. The commandment to keep the Sabbath is right up there with “don’t kill.” “don’t steal,” and “don’t commit adultery.” In other words, being a workaholic is, to God, just as bad as being a murderer or adulterer. Rest is not an option if we are to walk in the lifestyle of a disciple, if we are to have a life worth imitating. So let’s be regularly reviewing our lives to make sure we are beginning with rest, and abiding in Jesus. It’s so easy to just say, “Oh sure, I can do that,” a few too many times, until we realize we are doing too much, and we find ourselves, tired, stressed, not producing fruit, maybe even burning out. To produce fruit, vines need to be pruned back, and have times when most, if not all activity ceases. Sometimes we need to swallow our pride and admit we have taken on too much, and prune back some. This is particularly important as we enter the holiday season. How can we simplify? How can we make time for what is truly important? Especially loving the people God has put in our lives. When we begin with rest, and “work from our rest,” then our lives will produce fruit. That is attractive to others – a life worth imitating. A life that draws others to Jesus! How’s your fruit? Do you have a life worth imitating? Have a fruit-filled Thanksgiving!

Session Notes — Janet Krieger

CHURCH MISSION STUDY Our Church Mission Study has been completed. Thank you for your participation. Given the input of the congregation, Session will now review the information received and move forward to determine next steps in this interim season of church leadership. Information sought in the Mission Study included: 1. Where we have been as a congregation? 2. Where we are as a congregation? 3. Where we are going as a congregation? This information will help to inform what our congregation needs in terms of pastoral leadership as we move forward. The timeline for information from the Mission Study to be shared is as follows: • The congregation had the opportunity to complete the Mission Study questions on line or by paper copy during September and October. • The responses will be compiled by the Mission Study Team with results then shared with the Transition Team in mid-November; the transition team comprised of Steve Hildebrand, Janet Krieger, Ken Marble, Karen Bernd, Barney Trick and Jason Larsen was charged by Session in October 2014 to exercise responsibility in

overseeing and moving forward our leadership during this interim period. • The Mission Study will be presented to Session during the November Session meeting with accompanying recommendations from the Transition Team regarding next steps in this period of interim leadership. • Results and recommendations will be presented to the congregation following the November Session meeting. Praise God for the blessing He has put upon this church in giving us the leadership of Pastor’s Cindy and Tyler. Please pray for a continual renewal of our Pastor’s love and whole hearted devotion to God’s presence in their lives and the life of this Body. Pray for the recommendations the Transition Team will bring to Session, and then ultimately to the congregation. Pray these recommendations are wholly in line with God’s plan for our church. Pray for unity among Session in the decision making and protection from any distraction of satan. – Janet Krieger

Director of Traditional Music Search Please join us in praying for our new Director of Traditional Music for Grace of Christ. Our Search Committee will be receiving applications until November 6, 2015, with interviews to follow. If you know of someone who might be interested in applying, please direct them to the office for more information. Thank you! Your Music Director Search Committee – Joanne Hayes, Miriam Poage, Kathryn Russell, Peggy Schaffer, Jon Waite, and Cindy Shively.

A different lens for stewardship. Stewardship. Stewardship. Stewardship. That’s all you ever hear about around here in the month of November. Usually the voices you hear are talking about money. I thought I’d just chime in with a little stewardship practice for you that has nothing to do with your pocketbook. First, just a little introduction. The best part of life in the family of Jesus is relationships. People. Living, breathing, messy, beautiful, complicated, hungry, needy humans. Humanity. Humans are the stuff of Jesus. They are really all He cares about in the end. (He actually basically tells us that wasting your money on people is good stewardship! Let that one mull around in your brain for a bit. Ha!) And the most challenging part of life in the family of Jesus is relationships. We all know how this goes: Some relationships breathe life into us; some relationships primarily take energy out of us. I would posit that one of the sure signs of healthy, flourishing, Christ-centered relationships is the presence of both of these kinds of relationships in your life. While it is tempting for some of us to be too selfish and keep only friends who give to us, and for others of us to be too selfless and keep only friends who need us, Jesus demonstrates that good relational stewardship is keeping both kinds of people in our lives. Now, the little stewardship exercise I promised. Fill in names on the chart below. It must be specific names, not groups or entities. Names. Of real people. Then, if you feel so inclined, take some time to reflect on the following questions.

Your name here: Spiritual friendships

Spiritual friendships

Disciples

Questions for reflection: Do I have deep, authentic relationships? (relationships with depth, freedom, confession, conflict, resolution, tears, laughter) Spiritually speaking: Do I have mentors [people who invest in me]? Do I have spiritual friendships [people where there is mutual investment]? Do I have disciples [people in whom I invest and pour out my life, my love, my resources]? Which one of these three categories of relationships needs some ‘bulking up’ in my life? Am I stewarding my relationships well or poorly? What does healthy investment / stewardship of relationships look like? Consist of?

Kaffee Klatsch Seeing that we’ve had some changes in our weather, the days are shorter, and thoughts of Thanksgiving and Christmas are starting to become more prevalent. We’ve planned our November Kaffee Klatsch to be a little different from other Kaffee Klatches you’ve attended. While Thanksgiving and Christmas are wonderful celebrations we know there are added responsibilities during those times, too. That made us think that perhaps you’d enjoy a gentle afternoon of laughter, warmth, fellowship, and a bit of soul lifting music. With that in mind, we will be doing a jolly little sing along under the spirited guidance of Rosalyn Strang. She has a collection of music that you will recognize and enjoy. No worries if you sing in the cracks or between the notes, we want you to come join us in making a joyful noise. God gave you a voice that pleases Him. You won’t be singing for anyone but Him. Each bird has its own song and so do you. Crows, not usually noted for their lyrical tones, sing with abandon, and we will, too. We’ll also be doing 52 Bingo. Please know that you need absolutely no skills for this activity other than being able to recognize numbers, and the symbols for spades, clubs, diamonds, and hearts. (A short tutorial will be provided just in case these might be a

little fuzzy for you.) This game requires no memory, no skill, no stealth, and no plotting! It’s perfect for anyone who can’t remember whether they’ve taken their pills or not. Not only that, there will be prizes worth having…not a white elephant in the bunch. Nothing you need to dust. No sirreee! Just good stuff you’ll be glad to have. Such a deal! Now, go get your pencil and mark November 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden Room on your calendar. We’ll have plenty of coffee and a little something extra to help keep body and soul together. Please come join us.

Gracia de Cristo

Our Spanish speaking church has officially changed their name from Cristo Vive to Gracia de Cristo. Join us in the Sanctuary Sundays at 1:00 pm for worship!

— Alex Rule FAMILIES ENJOYED A TIME OF RETREAT IN CAMP GHORMLEY Enjoying God’s creation and great fellowship after each meal, families met for an hour to bring glory and honor to God with songs of praise, prayer, and a message dedicated to the family. One brother shared about his responsibility of being a father and how he faced daily struggles inside and outside his home. I listened to him for nearly 30 minutes without interrupting him, then Rodney asked us to join the group in the cabin so we could start the service. To his amazement, the message was exactly about what he was facing in life. He gave thanks to God for the message, as it was very much needed in the moment. We know that God works in ways we cannot understand, and this was an occasion to experience God in total fellowship at beautiful Camp Ghormley.

A NEW PERSON IN CHRIST Therefore if anyone is in Christ [ that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life]. 2 Corinthians 5:17 17

Amplified Bible (AMP)

A sister from Gracia de Cristo shared with me that she had no clarity of her true identity in Christ, 6

as she had experienced other churches and religions where Jesus is not recognized as the only way to God, or as God himself. I asked her to open her heart to God’s revelation, and to pray with me to accept Jesus into her heart and life. With tears in her eyes, she acknowledged Christ as her only Lord, God, and Savior. She thanked God for her new and true identity, and for clarifying the doubts that had been pursuing her for so long.

Congratulations KidZone Workers! When God Closes One Door, Jesus said that the “greatest in the kingdom” are these little ones! Choosing to work with, (think “serve”) these little ones is choosing to work with the “greatest.” They have no letters before or after their name, they have no power or income, they most likely will not tell you “thank you” or “what a fine job you are doing.” Our culture & our natural instinct says, “Try to impress those that look important and have power & prestige.” Jesus says the opposite. It has been said that “… We are never more Christ-like than when we are serving little ones, powerless ones, those who can never pay us back.”

God is watching & says that whatever you do to them is what you do to HIM! Jesus said that! He said “Whatever you do to the least, you have done to Me.” If we really believed the words of Jesus about little ones, everyone would stand in line to serve the children! They are the greatest in Christ’s opinion. For more to encourage you in serving children, read what Jesus had to say in Matthew 18:1-5, Luke 9:48, Matthew 25:40 God bless you as you serve His children! – Sue Sanders Sue Sanders is a storyteller in Sonbeams and Cubbies KidZone, VBS, and leader in the 1st and 2nd Grade KidZone class.

He is always faithful to open another one... We as a church have been blessed over the years to have had wonderfully dedicated staff members in our children’s ministries department, staff members that are loving, dedicated, and committed to teaching and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with children in our valley. One example of this staff is Michele Lenderman. It was a great day when Michele accepted a staff position in our children’s department. She and her husband Dalk had started serving in Kid Zone when their daughter Mikaila (who is now a junior at Whitworth) was in kindergarten. Unfortunately, Michele has recently had a change in her hours at her second job at Selah Gym Kids, and after 12 years of marvelous service, has decided to resign from her position here at Grace of Michele Lenderman Christ as of the end of Dec. 2015. This is a big loss for the children and families in our church, as Michele has been a strong source of love and support, as well as a living example of what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus. Michele’s enthusiasm and love for children has been an inspiration for all of us here at the church. Not only are we losing a great advocate for children, but we are losing a great friend amongst the entire staff. Michele’s extraordinary compassion for children has been a wonderful gift and inspiration to us all. Her beautiful smile, contagious laughter, and cheerful attitude have been a large part of the success in all the programs in the children’s ministries department. From KidZone, VBS, Christmas and Easter… Michele’s energy and enthusiasm has been a positive influence for us all.

I personally consider Michele a dear friend, and I am saddened that she will no longer be here to share in our ministry to children. We will all miss her dearly.

*After November 15th, please deliver to one of the alternate drop off locations listed below before Nov. 23

However, God has been faithful, and will continue to be faithful in providing gifted people to serve in this department. As this door closes, another opens as Melissa Gray has agreed to accept the position left by Michele.

• Ahtanum Pioneer Church - 8500 Ahtanum Road

Melissa began attending youth group at FPC in 1991, and became a member of the church in 1994. She then became a member of the 1995 & 96 summer TREK intern program with the youth department under the leadership of Bryce Lund. Melissa and Jeff Gray were married here at FPC in June of 1997 and then moved to the west side of Washington. In 2007 they moved back to Yakima and FPC, where they have raised their 3 boys Dallen, Gavin, and Keaton. Jeff is currently a session member and Melissa has been a lead teacher at Grace of Christ Preschool since 2010. The Gray family has a heart for this community and a strong passion for reaching children with the message of Jesus Christ. God’s faithfulness and timing is amazing, as we see His plan unfold. We are so excited to expand Melissa’s opportunity to minister to the children and families of GCPC, and I am thrilled to have the chance to work more with her. Melissa Gray

Missions

BRITTANY TRUSTS CHRIST!

Emily Carter (Pastor Cindy’s daughter) is a missionary with CRU, formerly Campus Crusade for Christ, at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. Emily Carter What is CRU? Our mission field is college communities. Our purpose is helping to fulfill the Great Commission in the power of the Holy Spirit by winning people to faith in Jesus Christ, building them up in their faith and sending them to win and build others and helping the body of Christ to do evangelism and discipleship in a variety of different ways.

OUR THRIVING CORE GROUP Every Thursday evening at 8:30, my friend Nathan and I lead a co-ed Core Group where students can grow deeper with God, each other, and discuss a topic we are studying in the Bible. We’ve had 20-27 students come consistently every week! We are going through a series called “Gifts of God” which includes topics such as alcohol, relationships, success, sex, etc. Students come to our Wednesday night weekly meeting (averaging over 100 students) and then go through a deeper study on the topic in core groups throughout the week.

12

“I don’t know much about Christianity…like what’s the difference between God and Jesus?” Brittany pondered as she sat across from me at a small table outside of Starbucks. The week before, Brittany came to the Cru Core Group Nathan and I lead on Thursdays. She recently moved back to Boise to finish school and has felt desperate for friends. “From what you’ve shared, I would love to get your thoughts on a little booklet we have that summarizes the Bible/God/Jesus/ Afterlife in 4 simple points. Could I share it with you?” I asked as I reached in my purse to pull out the gospel booklet. “Sure!” Brittany said. Brittany listened intently as I walked through the message of who God is and what he did for her on the cross. At the end of our conversation, Brittany responded with her desire to invite Jesus into her heart. She prayed to herself and looked up at me when she finished with a shy smile on her face. Brittany

PLEASE PRAY FOR…

• Emily to only do ministry where God is calling her so she doesn’t burn out. • For students to stay committed to Cru, grow, and share their faith. • An open door if God wants Emily to reach the Greek System Sororities.

The month of November brings colder weather and occasions to reflect on the things for which we are thankful. During this chilly season, I’m especially thankful for a warm building full of warm community and a group of youth who genuinely love being together every week. For those High Schoolers who can’t get enough during the week, we’re providing the opportunity to spend a weekend up at Ghormley for The Blast.

This retreat is exactly what it sounds like. It’s one of my favorite weekends of the year. It’s a time for escape from technology and responsibilities where we’ll focus instead on THE BLAST community, fun, and wrestling with who God is and what that means for us in our everyday lives. We’ll eat lots of delicious camp food, sleep in cozy cabins, and worship together for a few days. If you know anyone who is in 9th-12th grade and would be interested in a weekend like this one, they can register at ghormleymeadow.org. Cost is $100 and partial scholarships are available. Blast Dates: November 20-22. Contact Kelsey Schmidt at 248-7940 with any questions. – Kelsey Schmidt

Community Outreach THANKSGIVING DINNER FOR MABEL SWAN RESIDENTS The annual Thanksgiving dinner for residents of Mabel Swan is Wednesday, Nov 18 at noon in the Garden Room. Our church family is asked to help provide some of the essentials for this wonderful, tasty meal. Volunteers to help prepare, serve and clean-up are also needed, as well as individuals to welcome and greet our guests. Sign up at the Connection Center on Sundays, November 1st and 8th or call Joyce Sagare, 248-6691 to show your support for this important outreach to our neighbors at Mabel Swan.

Women’s Worship Dance Group Come experience prayer & worship through movement.

We’ll use dance, stretches, and movement exercises to meditate on Bible passages, pray for others, and simply praise God. There is no experience needed, only a desire to connect deeply with God and other women. It can take courage and trust to dance around others, but it results in a very powerful and meaningful worship time.
