Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church
Lead Pastor — Pastor Jim Marian
Like the early church, we should be active in these ways today... Worship. Now that the summer is over and a new school year is settling in, make it a priority to meet at Grace of Christ on Sundays for worship! Churches that are well have people who are excited to come together for fellowship, communion, prayer and praise (Acts 2:42, 47). God is to be the focus of all we do in His church.
Want to BE WELL? I had someone tell me the other day, “man Jim, you don’t look well – are you okay?” Now, that’s not something you really want to hear to start your day, but this guy was right, I wasn’t doing particularly well that week. Physically, I was tired and not getting much sleep. Emotionally, I felt drained. Spiritually, I needed some renewal. I had relationships I needed to work on. I had things I needed to learn and people I needed to love. Ever been there? Most of us have. We all long to be healthy in our faith, bodies, relationships and lives in general. What about churches? We all know some churches that are doing well and others that are not. As a member of the student council in Bible College, I had a well-known pastor in California by the name of Greg Laurie come to speak for a week at our school. He was a great Bible teacher and led a healthy, growing church. I looked up to Greg and hoped that one day I could lead a church like his. Pastor Greg taught that churches that are “well” practice the following activities:
Worship, Evangelize, Learn, & Love The concept comes from the example and practices of the first church described in the Book of Acts.
Evangelize. I know it can be a scary word that makes some
feel uncomfortable, but as we share God’s love in words and by example, the Lord will add new believers to our church (2:47). We can all take part in spreading God’s Word of salvation by developing friendships, inviting neighbors to church or bringing up our faith in a simple conversation with someone. Do you know how to share your faith with someone? Maybe that would be a healthy and challenging growth area for you this fall?
Learn. As a church, we must continue learning sound biblical truth from our pastors and teachers (2:42). The Bible is filled with instruction for living, and we should take every opportunity to learn from it, apply it to our lives and teach others. Participate in learning God’s Word on Sundays this fall and grow through a variety of Growth Groups and small group Bible study offerings that are currently gearing up! Love. We are to share with whoever has need and enjoy
the fellowship of other believers on a regular basis. Build relationships and grow in your faith by getting involved in a Growth Group or other group. Get involved in a ministry where you can use the gifts God has given you to share His amazing love with others! Don’t wait. Get to it my friend! A church whose members worship with meaning and truth, evangelize with a sense of love and urgency, and learn from God’s Word will be a “well” church, effective in the community and appreciated by “all the people.” (2:47).
Acts 2:42-47 reads: devoted themselves to the apostles’ “They teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

STEWARDSHIP THIS IS FOR EVERYONE!
Stewardship of Words the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty “Watch come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift. – Ephesians 4:29 ” generous with the different things God gave “Be you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words... ” – Psalm 150:6 Our God is a God of abundance. He has given us all that we need; everything that we have is a gift from our Father. We are the stewards of this life and the treasures God has given us. I love words! Spoken, written, tweeted or texted they carry extraordinary power to be either good and affirming or hurtful and harming. Words don’t just say something... they do something. Approximately 20 years ago, Dr. Maseru Emoto, a researcher in Japan, began studying water. In his published work The Miracle of Water, Dr. Emoto, reported what happened when water droplets in a near frozen state were spoken over. His research team found that as “the water turned from liquid to solid, the water crystals began to take on specific shapes and the patterns were based on what was being said over the water. Positive words yielded orderly shapely crystals. Negative words yielded explosions and implosion of design. The word love yielded a perfect six-pointed snowflake like crystal with lace-like design. The phrase "you make me sick" yielded a leprous, rioting bubble.”

Scripture is clear that words matter to God. In Genesis 1, God spoke creation into being. In John 1, Jesus is the Word become human. And, in Matthew 12:34 Jesus teaches that... "Whatever is in your heart determines what you say.”

God, Himself has given us the gift of language and we are called to use our words thoughtfully and for His glory. We are called to be good stewards of our words. What if we walked away when we did not have anything nice to say? What if we practiced setting aside our need to be right, and have it our way, in order to love others? Good stewardship of our words means choosing them carefully and... sometimes not speaking. Good stewardship of our words involves extending grace and in turn, asking for forgiveness when we have misused God’s gift of speech.

Baptisms on the North Lawn God has given us all authority to go into all nations and baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority (all power of absolute rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually – regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20
– Mateo 28:19-20
Ian Reynoso
On Sunday, July 29, and after our service, Ian Reynoso and Emilio Enriquez received the blessing of God through baptism by immersion. They, together with our families, celebrate this day that the Lord has made full with His presence and joy where we all sing praises to God our Creator. 5

This is the day that the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Este es el día que hizo el SEÑOR; Lleno de alegría y de gozo.
"I want to be baptized and thus follow the example of our Lord Jesus Christ and that of my sister Celic who is already in His presence," our brother in Christ Ian Reynoso firmly and with great emotion declared.
"Quiero bautizarme y seguir el ejemplo de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y el de mi hermana Celic que ya se encuentra en Su presencia". Declaró firmemente y con gran emoción nuestro hermano en Cristo Ian Reynoso.
"I am very grateful to God for giving me back my health when I was about to die in the hospital, and for giving me the opportunity to be baptized. His love and care are evident to me and today I only want to live for Him," said our other brother Emilio Enriquez with great joy.
"Estoy muy agradecido con Dios por haberme sanado al restaurar mi salud cuando ya estaba a punto de morir en el hospital, y por darme la oportunidad de bautizarme." Dijo nuestro otro hermano Emilio Enríquez con mucha alegría.
Ministry of Restoration Our church continues providing help and support to our congregation and community through our Ministry of Restoration. A sister in Christ, who is a member of our church, asked to help her mother to unload a U-Haul truck on July 6. It was a very hot day but with great enthusiasm, we managed to finish the project without getting hurt. Mother and daughter now live next to each other. We want to thank God for all the love and care given to mother and daughter and everyone in our community. To God be the Glory and Honor.

Grace Kids is excited to continue our Dig In journey this fall as we leap into Discipleship. Digging Into Discipleship brings a fresh approach to growing a lifelong relationship with God. As kids explore God’s character throughout the Bible, God transforms them from the inside out and kids discover what it means to reflect the heart of God in everyday life. During this adventure, we will worship, play games, explore object lessons and other messy but REALLY AWESOME science experiments, and build friendships with peers and Christ alike. We can’t wait to Dig In to this new school year with you!

Student Ministry — Thomas Sudbury
Summer was Amazing!
We had such a great summer! We had just over 40 of our students join us for various camps (Mid High, High School, Water Ski, and Leadership) and all were crazy and fun! We learned new songs, dances, and just had a wonderful time. We learned about the building blocks of our faith and what happens when we do not start with a foundation built on Christ (it is NOT good!). We learned about what it means to be dedicated Christians. We all made new friends and built stronger relationships. This summer was a complete success. I am very tired, but it was well worth it!
Fall Kick-Off
We have scheduled our fall kick-off for Wednesday, September 12 and we are excited to have our student leadership team (The Grow Team) planning the event! If you know someone who is the 6th – 12th grade, you do not want them to miss out!
New/Returning Leadership Meeting
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th at 6:00PM! Put it on your Calendar! If you want to be a part of Grace Student Ministries for the 2018-2019 session now is your chance! An information meeting is on Tuesday, September 11 at 6:00 PM. We will meet in the Middle School Room on Level L and there will be snacks. This meeting does not mean you need to commit yet, and coming to the meeting doesn't mean you are in for sure, but it is the best first step :) We are excited for all of the growth happening in our church and we would love you to be a part of the action God is leading here.
Mentorship Opportunity
Do you want to help with our amazing youth program but don't think you can commit to one or two times a week? We have a wonderful opportunity that we are going to start on a small scale (12 leadership students) who we would like to partner with adult mentors from the church. Our vision for the youth in the church is to have them become dedicated Christians who will be devoted for life. Proverbs teaches us to “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) we want our youth to be our future Church, and with that we are looking for some mentors who feel called to connect with youth once a month (or more!) and help them grow. This is a one-on-one, same gender mentorship program. If you would like to have a huge impact on one of our students at Grace, this is your opportunity! 248.7940 x 114

Womens Ministry Womens Ministry Retreat Planning We have begun the preparations for the 2019 Women’s Retreat with a site visit to the city of Leavenworth. We visited several potential host locations and have our top three contenders – based on location and accommodation for meeting spaces and number of rooms available. The Women’s Ministry team would appreciate your prayers as we continue planning for this event. With the location decided, we really need the theme and speaker! We believe that God has exactly “who and what” ready for us – but sometimes - personal agendas get in the way of hearing! Pray for us to be open and receptive to His plan for this event.
Fall Social Gathering We have also been discussing hosting a social gathering this Fall – watch for more information, in the Sunday programs and on our church website, as we get those details ironed out!

Prayer & Healing Ministry Prayer and Healing Gathering Tuesday, September 11 7pm in the Chapel We will start with a time of worship at 6:30pm. Please join us! We believe the Lord wants us to all be well and healthy which he mentions often in the Bible.
He heals the brokenhearted and “ bandages their wounds. ” – Psalm 147
Those praying for you at this gathering, know the power of those words. The time is set aside for your needs to be lifted up to our Heavenly Father. We begin with scriptures and testimonies about God’s work as a healer. Then we break into smaller groups to pray healing for one another. Healing comes in many shapes and sizes – actual physical restoration, a word from God, or even a revelation of an area that needs forgiveness. In our gatherings, we have evidence of all types of healing. Our hope is that our community would experience God’s healing touch in radical ways.
Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my “ whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all
that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things.

– Psalm 103:1-4

The sounds of children fill the hallways again as another school year begins… I feel so fortunate, as both a Director and a preschool parent, to be blessed with such an amazing teaching staff.
Crystal Lopez is our Lead Teacher
for the 3’s (Tues/Thurs) and 4’s (Mon/ Wed/Fri) classes. This will be her 14th year working at the church and her 5th year in the preschool. This will be her first year as a Lead Teacher and I am excited to see how God uses her in this new role. About being a teacher, Crystal has said, “I love working with children and watching their little minds grow. It was always a lifelong dream of mine to be a teacher. I am very much excited for this new year to begin. I'm excited to see the familiar faces of my kiddos from last year and just as excited to see the new faces coming in this year. It's going to be a fun filled year!”
Jenifer Knight has been at
Grace of Christ since 2007. She started in childcare before joining the preschool team. She also works in Children’s Ministry at the church and teaches the 3 year olds - Pre-K Sunday program. This year she will be the Assistant Teacher for the 3’s and 4’s class. When asked what her favorite part of being a teacher is she said, “The kids of course! Being a part of such a special time in their lives - the beginning of their first years. What a great school to do that! We have a fun learning program; can’t wait to share that.”
and learning in her students. “When they love coming to school and are engaged in what we are learning, I'm a happy teacher!” she said. “Every class and each student in it has a unique personality and I can't wait to see what the dynamics of this year's class will be. I look forward to discovering how God made each of my students special!”
Sherée Tsubota started in 2015
and this will be her 3rd year as the Assistant Teacher for Pre-K.
When asked what she was most looking forward to this year she said, “Building a relationship with each child and hopefully becoming one of those memories for them where someday they are telling a friend a story and they say something like, ‘I had this preschool teacher Mrs. Tsubota and she was cray-cray! Always dressing up! She was the best!’ Or maybe when they run into me ten years down the road they stop and give me a hug! I also love the staff and look forward to growing together this year!”
Shannon Carlson is a parent
and board member who has volunteered to teach P.E. for the 4’s and Pre-K classes this year. Shannon has stepped in as a longterm substitute teacher in the past and I am looking forward to working with her more this year.
Enrollment Update: Both our 3’s and 4’s classes are full with waiting lists. There are two openings in Pre-K for M-Th; and one opening for the Fun Friday Pre-K option.
Katrine Schraan is our Pre-K
Lead Teacher. Katrine has been a part of the preschool for 6 years, first as a parent, then as a board member, and 3 years ago she officially joined us as the Pre-K teacher. Her favorite part of being a teacher is fostering a love of school

never let the fire go out... When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful. Share with God's people who are in need. Welcome others into your homes. Romans 12:11-13
Fire is a tool utilized only by human beings. Since the beginning of time, humans have congregated around its warmth for light, protection and company. Every other creature on the planet fears fire, but we’ve been given the unique ability to harness it, to use its power to improve our lives. Not only that, but poets and artists have used fire to describe the God-given spark that wakes us up in the morning and fuels our purpose and passion. Whatever the context, fire is not to be ignored.
Sisters, this is a year we will tend the fire in our hearts. We will stop inhaling the fumes of our mistakes that tell us we are not enough, not a good enough mom, not pretty enough, not brave enough, not smart enough, not wealthy enough. Instead, we will choose to tend our God-given fire. We will love our children with an all-consuming love and use our words to warm the world. We will hold the torch up high and shed light on what matters most.

expectations and the need to control the people and situations in your life. When we surrender, we become in tune with the swift but gentle timing of God. This year, we will be women who trust that God is fighting for us, so we need only to be still.
Breathe Freely
This is the bold reminder to let yourself be loved. Even though we aren’t enough in our own mind, we are enough in the mind of God. There is nothing that you can do, or have done, to ruin or fracture God’s love for you. There is no amount of striving or performing that will earn you more. Breathe freely and joyfully, and be refreshed. We will be women and moms who stand out because we live loved.
We want to invite you to MOPS at Yakima Grace
We will be kicking off our 20th year with our first meeting on Friday, September 7th. Join us at 9am in the Chapel for breakfast and coffee. We have a dynamic childcare for your kiddos. Please invite your mom friends; we look forward to seeing you!
Live Expectantly
This is the bold reminder to think about what could go right. We will renew our minds and choose
to trust that God is good. Hope will be on the tip of our tongues. Passion will flow from our hearts and we will pray big prayers. We will be women whose passion and patience inspire the people we love most.
Surrender Daringly
We will also have a meeting on September 21. This meeting will be fun game day as a few of us will be at the international conference in Louisville, Kentucky. If you would like to know more about our MOPS ministry or how you can serve, please contact Danielle (509) 312-9883 or email mops@yakimagrace.com and we will connect with you! See you soon!
This is the bold reminder to let things go. Fire is a tool of transformation, and often the most life-improving thing we can do is surrender. Surrender is an act of courage. What would it feel like to let yourself off the hook from living like it is all up to you? Let go of unhelpful 13

CW Fellowship of Christian Athletes In addition, Central Washington Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Area Director, Barry Reifel will be giving the message for the 9am and 11am services. Barry is a dynamic speaker who will surely touch your heart as he addresses the topic of Missions. Barry’s involvement with FCA goes back to his football days at Washington State University where he played and coached football. Barry was also the head football coach at East Valley High School in Yakima for some 26 years. While under his direction, East Valley made 12 state play-off appearances, three semi-final appearances and placed second in state – not once – but twice! Next Steps: Grace Partner Class UNION GOSPEL MISSION Our mission: To follow Christ in helping people to move from homelessness to wholeness
EVENING OF HOPE Building a Community of Hope… You are invited to the Second Annual Yakima Union Gospel Mission (YUGM) Evening of Hope on Wednesday, September 19 at the Yakima Convention Center from 6pm to 8pm. The Mission will be celebrating with stories of redemption and renewal from those whose lives have been transformed. According to Carly Holtzinger, YUGM Event Planner, the evening will “…highlight the tremendous impact made by Executive Director Rick Phillips and his wife Debbie who have faithfully served the YUGM for over 30 years.” In addition, Holtzinger says the evening is an opportunity to formally introduce YUGM’s newly-elected Executive Director, Mike Johnson. “This will be a one-of-a-kind night to celebrate our legacy of rescue and restoration!,” Holtzinger explains. Evening of Hope offers an opportunity to participate in reshaping, restoring and renewing the lives of addicts, homeless, and hurting men, women, and families in need. Cost for the dinner is $75.00 per guest. Please contact Cindy at 509.853.4317 for more information or to purchase tickets. Thank you for helping us share our mission with the Yakima Valley! (Tickets may be purchased at https://www.yugm.org/eveningofhope.) “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his deed.” – Proverbs 19:17 15
Next Steps meets Sundays, September 30 – October 21 from 9am – 10:15am in the Lower East Classroom (L2). These four-week classes (for believers or not) explore the “4 B’s” that are important to life here at Grace as we grow together in relationship, faith, discipleship and ministry: • Belong – By God’s grace, everyone can belong! First, enjoy our worship service and experience the love of God. Then, our hope is that you find a group with which to connect and build authentic relationships. • Believe – Experience God’s amazing love through His Son, Jesus Christ! The Bible says that all who believe in Jesus (put their trust in Jesus’ death on the cross for the forgiveness of sin) will be forgiven and receive the promise of eternal life! It’s also important to know what our church believes and how to share your faith with others. • Become – Jesus told His early followers to “make disciples.” A disciple is a follower of Jesus who is growing in biblical understanding, personal faith and service to others. It is our desire to help everyone grow in becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ! • Bless – God has gifted each of us to serve and make a difference in the lives of others. We are committed to making a difference in our community and world. We encourage our people to love others by serving and ministering with the God-given gifts, abilities & interests. Who is The Class For? • Anyone who is checking out Grace – and may (or may not) want to join the family of Grace (we call this becoming a “Grace Partner”) • Anyone who already considers Grace their Church Family – and want to grow in their life here at Grace by more fully understanding the “4 B’s” of relationship, faith, discipleship and ministry. • Childcare is available! Interested? • Connect with Jana: Ask questions or sign up by giving her a call at 248-7940×108.

Summer Report
Summer is now over, and we are praising God for the 800+ campers who came to Ghormley this summer. God did amazing work in the lives of so many youth who came to camp. Over 90% of campers reported they grew in their faith, and hundreds made a decision to follow Christ for the first time! Our theme this summer was "Building Blocks of Faith." Many youth reported learning new truths about how to build their faith on God, and many told us they now feel much more confident in God's love for them. Please pray that the words heard and the love displayed to the campers this summer will stay in their hearts all throughout the coming year!
Support Needs Interested in supporting the ministry of Ghormley? We have a number of projects either in process or that we are raising funds for so we can begin.
