The First to See Him – John 19:16-20:18
In the darkest hours when Jesus faced the humiliation and pain of the cross, most of His disciples and followers fled for fear of association with Him. But not her. She stood there, near the cross on Golgatha, as her Lord and Savior hung bleeding and suffering. She stood with His mother, His aunt and one of His closest disciples, John. When it was over, she watched as a soldier pierced His side with a spear to make sure He was dead. Did she grimace as the sight of water and blood spilled from His tortured body onto the ground? This was the woman whom Jesus cast out seven demons… and she couldn’t have been more grateful. She loved Jesus very deeply. She owed Him her life. Jesus once said, “to whom much is forgiven, that one loves more.” And she had been forgiven a lot. Her heart was broken…and now He was gone. I’m sure she didn’t sleep much in the days that followed. Probably didn’t have much of an appetite either. Perhaps she stayed with the other followers of Jesus – frightened, confused and heartbroken. He was placed in a new tomb in a garden near where they had murdered Him. It was early morning on a Sunday, still dark when she came to the tomb. She couldn’t stay away. But when she arrived, she was surprised to find the stone protecting the tomb rolled away! She thought someone had taken her Lord’s body. But where? Why would anyone do such a thing? She ran and told the disciples. Peter and John
2
came running and examined the empty tomb, wondering what to make of it all. She lingered behind. She was drawn to the place where her Lord was laid. She was weeping tears of sorrow. Then, two angels dressed in white appeared at the empty tomb and asked why she was crying? Then, another person appeared – a gardener? He asked her who she was looking for. She responded, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” She desired to protect Her Lord’s burial; that it be done properly with dignity and care. The man replied with only one word, but it was enough to blow away the fog and lift her gloom and confusion. He said her name… in His voice! “Mary!” She knew it was Jesus. She knew her Shepherd’s voice. Quickly brushing away her tears she addressed Him, “Master!” Then she grabbed hold of Jesus for all she was worth. And if He hadn’t asked her, she probably never would have let go! Mary Magdalene left and announced to the disciples that she had seen the risen Lord! The resurrection changed everything. It turned Mary’s sorrow to joy! It turned the disciples doubt to belief and their despair to hope. It can do the same for you and me. Because of the resurrection, Jesus now lives within His followers through the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). Because of the resurrection, His followers have the hope and promise of eternal life! Mary shared her hope in the resurrection of Jesus with the disciples. Who can you share your hope with this Easter? – Pastor Jim Marian
Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church
Associate Pastor — Pastor Cindy Shively
Resurrection Hope! One of the great truths, and source of hope, we have seen in our sermon series in Genesis is that our God is a loving creator. That means He can make something new that was not there before. God is a God of life and hope – He gives “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” (Isaiah 61:3). We are an Easter people. That is, we believe in the resurrection – God’s power to bring life out of death, to restore, to heal, to reconcile, to create something new. I have certainly seen this in my life, and in our church family. Thank you for your love, support, encouragement and appreciation these past 3 years! Now God does not change – His steadfast love endures forever. In Malachi 3:6, the Lord reminds Israel that, ‘I the LORD do not change.’ And the writer to the Hebrews says the same: ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever’ (Hebrews 13:8). The book of James repeats it: ‘the Father of the heavenly lights does not change like shifting shadows’ (James 1:17). So we can be at perfect peace in God’s love and faithfulness. Yet God also does new things, for new circumstances, and a new time. The prophet Isaiah reminds us, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:18-19)
So as we enter this new chapter in the life of Grace of Christ Church Family, we can be at peace that God never changes – God will be faithful to guide us and provide for us, as we all continue to seek to love and serve God together. And at the same time, we want to be open to new ways, new ideas, and new opportunities the Lord may have for us, in order to help bring God’s Kingdom here on earth – here to Grace of Christ and to Yakima! Please be praying during this new time for Staff and Session to be working together to carry on the work God’s Spirit has already begun in us. Please pray for:
• Pastor Jim Marian and his family as they make their new home in Yakima • Unity as a Staff and Session • Growing deeper in our faith in God, and our ability to hear His voice • Clarity in our Vision for how God wants to make a difference through us, both individually and as a church family • Wisdom in reaching and discipling young families • Developing meaningful community, both to help us grow in the Lord and bring people to Jesus So, whatever joys and challenges lie ahead, may our trust in God’s love and faithfulness continue to grow. God is not finished with Grace of Christ yet! God knows, God sees, God can be trusted in the new. With Resurrection hope and anticipation for all that lies ahead, – Pastor Cindy Shively

A New Song Spring is finally here! Look, snow is beautiful and all, but I think I broke up with the winter snow back at the beginning of February. Apparently my “break up” message didn’t get thru till March. But I digress. Ah spring. It’s all about the “new” isn’t it? Nature surrounds us with new life and new beginnings. Even our church, by the time this article hits Grace Alive, will be into a new chapter with our new Senior Pastor. Did you know the Bible has somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 references to “singing a new song?” Which really gets me to the point of this article. Singing a new song! We sing songs of worship and praise every Sunday together. But the question is why? Some of these songs are hundreds of years old and rich with history. Some of these songs have resonated greatly with our souls in our faith journey. But we also sing songs that are new and we find them having just as much of an impact in our lives. Songs that have been written to bring glory and honor to God. So we sing! But why sing together? Quite simply put, God loves it when we sing as a body of believers. However, we are not the only ones who sing. The angels sing too! “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” -Job 38:7. God Himself is a singer. In Zephaniah 3:17 it says, “The Lord your God is with you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
God loves it when His children sing songs of worship because we are called to sing. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” - Col 3:17 Bob Kauflin broke it down in an article I read recently titled, “The Three R’s: Why Christians Sing.” Singing helps us REMEMBER God’s word, it helps us RESPOND to God’s grace and singing helps us REFLECT God’s glory.
REMEMBER: Think about all the things you learned to sing
growing up. Think about how you can remember products or companies because of song. I’ll prove it! Finish the following jingles... “Plop Plop Fiz Fiz...” or a little more recent, “Nationwide is...” See what I mean? Not only did you finish the jingles, you also sang them while you read them, didn’t you? Singing helps us remember. When we sing songs of worship, we remember God’s promises. We remember things about His good character. We remember miracles and we are reminded of His deep love for each one of us.
RESPOND: We are to sing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual
songs with “gratitude in your hearts to God.” The first part is letting us know that all different styles of songs are appropriate responses of worship. Singing with “gratitude” is meant to be a whole-hearted event. “God gave us singing to combine objective truth with thankfulness, doctrine with devotion, and intellect with emotion.” (Bob Kauflin).
REFLECT: When we sing songs of worship corporately,
it brings glory to God. It is a demonstration of the unity we have in Christ. Jesus died for that unity. It is because all three persons of the Trinity sing (Zeph. 3:17, Heb. 2:12, Eph. 5:1819). And oh yeah! We will be singing a lot together in heaven. – Jason Cavanaugh 4

In talking to the woman at the well, Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10) Jesus truly is the Living Water – the water of life – the only true source of satisfaction in this life, and hope for the next. Come and hear how some of our own Grace of Christ Family are making a difference to bring both clean water, and Jesus, to communities in need. There are a couple of organizations through which we minister, Living Waters for the World, and Living Water World Missions. Spring Is In The Air! Bulbs are
starting to emerge and rain is a welcome sight instead of white flakes falling from the sky. The winter was long and cold and the preschool children are just as ready as every one for warmer weather! Spring brings new life and that is what we will be focusing on this month: Flowers, butterflies, and the resurrection of Jesus! We are excited to welcome the pastors to our classrooms to share the Easter story. He is Alive!
Fun Activities! March brought many fun activities; one being our Family Fun Night and Open House. Clifford the Big Red Dog came for a visit and was definitely a highlight for many children. Did you know March is National Reading Month? Even though most of the children in our program can’t read themselves, we feel it is so important to instill the love of books and reading at an early age. This starts at home so we encourage adults to read to their children. One way we do this is our annual Read-a-Thon. Parents and children keep track of books and how many minutes were read over the course of a week. Prizes were awarded to top readers and top fundraisers. Book Fair Success! Thank you for supporting our Book Fair. A
percentage of our sales go directly to our classrooms in the form of books and supplies. And thank you for your continued support of our preschool. Our children loved showing off their art work at our Art Show. We are so grateful to you, our church family. We are still needing to replenish our scholarship funds and our Preschool Bible fund. Again, thank you for your prayers and financial support. We couldn’t do it without you!
Registration is in Full Swing!
We still have spots available in our Three and Four Year Old Classes and limited spots are available in our Pre-K class. If you know anyone looking for a preschool program, send them our way! Call the church office at:

Easter Week
Easter Lilies Traditionally, Easter lilies are a beautiful symbolic expression of the resurrection. Throughout the years, people have donated potted lilies at Easter to decorate the church sanctuary and as a means to honor the remembrance of loved ones who have passed away. Although the lilys' fragrance is a delight to some, for others the fragrance overwhelms the olfactory and detracts from participating in the Easter worship service. This year we will switch to silk Easter lilies. If a donation of a memorial Easter lily is part of your tradition and you would like to continue to acknowledge your loved one this year, we ask you to consider a monetary donation towards the purchase of silk flowers to establish a garden of lilies that will be used each year. Questions or comments? Please contact Linda Mathews at 697-3013 or klmathews@fairpoint.net.

Everything Grows From a Seed
Both our Pastor Nominating Committee and the Marian family agree that Grace of Christ is the right zone. So in these weeks of transition, let’s uproot any complaining, bitterness or judgment and make our community’s soil vibrant and healthy. Let’s partner with God in nurturing an environment where Pastor Jim and his family can grow roots and flourish--where they can become closer to God and to one another in ways that bring life to our church and to the greater Yakima community. How do we do this? By valuing each person in our church—without judgment, or personal expectations and preferences. By creating a place where people are allowed and encouraged to thrive and to be who God created them to be. God’s heart for Pastor Jim and his family to flourish is His heart for each person’s experience in our church community. May we honor our name, Grace of Christ, and be encouragers of our pastors and one another. May we nurture an environment where each person flourishes. “Don’t just pretend that you love others: really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically.” – Romans 12:9-11
As Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church, we are a community brought together by God to love and worship Him and to love and serve one another. We are a family of faith, and it is with great pleasure that we welcome Pastor Jim Marian and his family into our community. After hearing Pastor Jim preach on February 12th, one of our prayer intercessors walked into the parlor and sensed God saying: I am planting him as a seed in this community. Now it is up to you, as a church community, to provide an environment in which he can flourish. As we know, every plant grows best in certain zones. Seeds planted in healthy, watered and fertilized soil can thrive if the area is kept free of weeds and destructive insects. 9

A CALL TO PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN AUTHORITY AND GOVERN US.
UN LLAMADO A ORAR POR LOS QUE ESTÁN EN AUTORIDAD Y NOS GOBIERNAN.
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” - 1 Timothy 2:1-2
“Así que recomiendo, ante todo, que se hagan plegarias, oraciones, súplicas y acciones de gracias por todos, especialmente por los gobernantes y por todas las autoridades, para que tengamos paz y tranquilidad, y llevemos una vida piadosa y digna.” - 1 Timoteo 2:1-2
GOD IS MY HEALER
DIOS ES MI SANADOR
Celic Reynoso is celebrating two months without cancer. Her faith in God is so strong; she spends a lot of time reading the Bible, and in prayer repeating words of affirmation like, “God is my healer, Jesus is going to heal me, and He is going to save me.” Celic continues to receive chemotherapy treatment every month and stays in the hospital for four days at a time. The MRI is every two months and so far has not shown any cancer. (Praise God!) She has also received blood transfusions and continues her therapy. Celic and her beautiful family are very grateful for the support they are receiving from our church, both prayer and financial help.
Rossy, Celic’s mom, is always with her and accompanies her to all her appointments. She affirms: “Our faith in the Lord is very strong; for God, the cancer is nothing.” Rossy’s family, asks that our congregation continue to pray for Celic, for Elija, Araceli and for all the sick people. This miracle reminds me of Psalm 23, that God is our Shepherd.

The LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the LORD. God Bless you always, Pastor Alex Rule

Student Ministry Dear Church Family, This year is going by so fast! I can’t believe we are already into spring! We are excited with the new arrival of Pastor Jim. With his help, we will resume searching for the person that God intends to have lead our youth at Grace of Christ. Please continue to pray for the search process, as well as this transition period. Our Wednesday night group is going great! Our speakers who have come in have been tackling those tough questions the youth asked and they have done such an amazing job! We are continuing to learn and grow together. In March, the youth joined the larger church for the Ash Wed service and Linda Sorenson did a wonderful
job teaching the youth what Ash Wednesday and Lent means. In the high school group, we’ve added worship that is led by Jahzeel Garcia, who is one of our high school students. She has done an AWESOME job! Our Sunday group is continuing to meet during the discipleship hour. This gives the students a chance to play a game or fellowship, discuss the sermon/scripture and pray for one another. Thank you to Dave Whiteside (mid-high) and Cyrus Bricel (high-school) for leading the students! Please continue to pray for the youth ministries. Pray for the youth, the volunteers, and for the person that God will send to lead the youth. Also pray asking God where He might want you to support this ministry. Thank you for your support and prayers! Blessings! With Christ’s Love, Amae Merrill

MISSIONS MINISTRY TEAM LOVE INC FUNDRAISING CELEBRATION
Love, INC. is one of many local ministries that we support at Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church.
Yakima Valley Community College & FCA In December, YVCC started an FCA huddle and has been meeting regularly. Players from the soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball teams have attended, as well as four coaches from three different sports. The meetings have included fun activities like bowling and crazy competitions along with inspirational Christ-centered videos and Bible studies to encourage student athletes in their faith.
Love INC’s primary mission is to be a clearinghouse for the community so those in need have their needs more accurately met at one location. In addition, Love INC spends a full year one-on-one with those families who agree to a radical transformation of their financial approaches to life. Our church is one of many Yakima congregations that supports Love in the Name of Christ. We are thankful for the group of handy men that have been working to modestly remodel a portion of the Love INC operations center located in the old Yakima Hardware building on South First Street. The green Bags of Hope, filled with household items and food, have been a great gift from our congregation.
Please join Love INC in their Annual Fundraising Celebration! FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES IS GROWING LOCALLY
FCA’s influence is spreading throughout the Yakima County and we are excited to share with you some of the recent growth we have seen.
West Valley High School & FCA West Valley High School recently had students take initiative to start an FCA huddle at their school. They received approval for their FCA huddle to be an ASB club and have had four meetings so far. The word has spread and they had 50 kids at each of the last two meetings! God is doing a great work through the students and advisors at WV who are stepping out in faith and following God’s leading. This year Barry Reifel, FCA Area Director, was invited to speak at Sunnyside Christian School’s chapel time as well as share devotionals with the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. He was also blessed to be able to do weekly devotions with the Grandview HS Football team, and has been asked back to share with the track team this spring. Huddles continue to meet at Selah and East Valley High Schools as well. Recently, Barry met with seven female wrestlers at Sunnyside HS who were interested in finding out more about how to start FCA at their school. Please pray that God would keep their interest alive to pursue forming a huddle at Sunnyside High School this spring. Monthly FCA coaches breakfasts in Yakima, Toppenish, and Sunnyside continue to bring coaches together to encourage them to coach for a greater purpose: God’s glory! If you would like to know more about what’s going on with FCA in Yakima County and how you can get involved, contact: – Barry Reifel, Area Director Fellowship of Christian Athletes 509-307-1534, breifel@fca.org
