copy the behavior and customs of this world, “Don’t but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. – Romans 12:2
”
Going Against the Crowd Can Be Tough
I had just bought my 6-year-old son a nice chocolate ice cream cone on a hot summer day at Disneyland, when all of a sudden we were in the wrong place at the wrong time! A show had just finished and the crowd pummeled us. My son got knocked down and dropped his ice cream cone on the ground and all over himself, trampled by people racing to get to their next ride. In tears, he looked up at me, ice cream all over his clothes. I cleaned the little guy up and got him a new ice cream cone. He looked up at me and said, “going against the crowd can be tough, Dad.” Have you ever tried to swim against the current of a river, or paddle a boat upstream? If you have then you know how grueling and tough it can be. You have to fight for each stroke. It can take everything you have not to give in and let the current sweep you downstream.
Living the Christian Life
Trying to live the Christian life can be similar. As followers of Jesus, we are called to think and act differently than the “world.” Being called to walk in a different and sometimes opposite direction of the crowd can often make us feel uncomfortable, or even a target of ridicule. If you are a student on any high school or college campus, you may understand this. The crowd thinks differently. Things like cheating, immorality, violence and selfishness are common. It’s just the way life is. But it doesn’t have to be.
2
Submitting to the Holy Spirit Jesus calls His followers to think and act differently (Romans 12:2). This can only happen when we submit to the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives... and allow Him to transform us completely. Think about the example of Jesus Himself: He reached out to a despised cheater and tax collector named Zacchaeus. He ate with “sinners” (to eat with someone meant you accepted them). He touched a leper and cleansed him (no one touched lepers in Jesus’ day). He saved a woman from being stoned to death and showed her mercy and grace. He spoke to a foreign woman (unheard of for a good Jew), and showed her the love of God. He didn’t retaliate when mocked and beaten. He prayed for those who nailed him to a cross. He forgave Peter, one of his most trusted disciples for betraying Him. Jesus went against the crowd of His day for no other reason than to please His Heavenly Father.
Learning to Know God’s Will for Your Life Look at Romans 12:2 again. If you really want to know and follow God’s will for your life, you need to think and act in a transformed way. Allow Jesus to transform your heart and mind. Study His Word. Pray continually. Be grateful for all things. Strive to live a holy life. Serve others sacrificially. Enjoy the friendships of other Christians and have a heart for those who don’t know the Lord yet. Pray that God would give you the strength and ability to be an example of love and faith to your family, classmates, teammates, neighbors, friends and those at work.

STEWARDSHIP The Value of Generous Giving
Generosity is one of the most important values we can model for our children and grandchildren. In our present day culture wherein consumerism, entitlement and debt rule, the church has a responsibility to model, teach and establish a legacy of generosity within our families. Being good stewards of all God has provided us does not magically occur when one graduates from college or receives a first career paycheck. Children and teenagers learn by watching adults.
Be Generous with Money, Time and Talents
Families should make a financial commitment to the church and talk with their children and teens about why they do this. The practice of giving is far more important than the amount of the pledge. Families should also pursue ways they may share their time and talents to bless others. Volunteering to serve as a family is a meaningful expression of a generous lifestyle. The important lesson of stewardship is that it is a gift of our time, talents and treasures that we give in response to all we have received and that God values our giving.
will be made rich in every way so that you can “You be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. ” – 2 Corinthians 9:11
Engage your family in a discussion of the values and beliefs you hold regarding stewardship and generosity. Use the form below to create your stewardship statement. What will a more generous lifestyle look like for your family? What will you do to establish a legacy of generosity?
Learning How to Become Generous
How do we learn to be good stewards of the gifts God provides to us? We learn when generosity is modeled to us. One of the most important roles parents and grandparents have is raising up the next generation of givers by modeling a lifestyle of generosity. When we view our world through the eyes of Jesus, generosity becomes our way of life. Our mind-set becomes one of giving. That is what God the Father has done in giving us His Son, because He so loved the world. Jesus obediently gave Himself for our salvation and the Holy Spirit gives us good and perfect gifts. Our giving becomes a recognition of God’s own generosity. Giving becomes our expression of thankfulness.
Personal Stewardship Statements
During the month of October, we will hear testimony from families in our church regarding their personal stewardship statements. Then on October 28, your family will have the opportunity to commit your pledge of time, talents and treasure to the body of Grace of Christ. I pray your consideration of choosing to live as a generous family will be a great blessing in your lives. – Janet Krieger, Elder Business Ministry

– Lamentaciones 3: 21-26
But this I call to mind, Therefore I have hope. It is because of the LORD’S loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, Because His [tender] compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion and my inheritance,” says my soul; Therefore I have hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.” The LORD is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him, To those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word]. It is good that one waits quietly for the salvation of the LORD. – Lamentations 3:21-26

God gave our church the opportunity to use our engineering skills to tighten nuts and bolts, as well as to affirm all the bases and posts with cement so that everything would be in place and almost ready to be used by the kids at the beginning of this school year 2018 -2019. The School administrators were very satisfied with the participation of parents from the community and the support they received from our church. We ask you to pray that God will continue protecting our children inside and outside of school. If you wish to participate in the ministries offered by our Lord Jesus Christ through the disciples from our church, please contact us. Mission Ministry Trailseekers
A Safe & Positive Environment for Children
As summer turns to autumn, a new year of Trailseekers begins. Around 55 boys and girls, grades K-5th, will be meeting at Grace on Mondays after school. This year will be filled with fun, food, friendship and learning about God. In the midst of this sea of young faces, once again I am reminded of the philosophy that has guided this program for nearly 30 years, changing countless lives.
In Trailseekers, children and youth have a positive place to belong, to be accepted, to have significance, to experience love as God intended, and to gain an understanding of God's purpose for their lives.
Volunteers Can Help in Various Ways But this program cannot work and it cannot reach the youth without the help of volunteers. Will you be one of the ones to help bridge the gap for these children? There are many ways you can help and many ways to volunteer. Below are just a few of the ways in which you could help the Trailseekers program and impact the lives of Yakima's youth. If you would like to help with something on this list, or in another way that is not mentioned, please contact Greg Nebeker or Monnie Miller through GCPC office. Thank you!
TRAILSEEKERS WISH LIST
The Trailseekers Philosophy
for the 2018-2019 School Year
The philosophical principle behind the Trailseekers program is the belief that the solution to many problems facing children, and the problems they are presenting to the community, lies in making them feel loved. They must feel that their life matters. We must give them hope and develop a sense of direction. A child needs a significant person in his/her life, and for that reason, we stress a one-on-one approach to intervention. Finally, we believe that the best foundation a child can build his/her life on is a solidly grounded Christian faith.

Thoughts About Ministry
I am excited about where we are going in Ministry these days! It has been just over a year since I started and I am thankful for all of the great youth and parents I have met! I am especially thankful for the leaders we have in place! In 2 Timothy, Paul speaks of people who are upright and have no reason to be ashamed because of their work in teaching the Gospel. He says that they, “rightly handle the word of truth.” I feel that in this season, this is my desire. We live in a world that is changing dramatically, and I truly believe that the impact our leaders have on our youth is critical, especially in teaching of the truth. If you see one of these leaders over the next month, tell them how appreciative you are of their work, because we all know how important it is!

God has a big plan for our church, and I believe it starts locally and reaches globally. The scriptures teach us in Matthew that; we are to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded. (Matt 28:19) This is why we started up Mission Coffee Roasters at the church. Jesus took 11 of his closest friends and started a local movement that today reaches us 6,000 miles away. As we choose to serve our church, the impact we have on the lives right in front of us will make lasting impact in the Kingdom. Not only will we reach local, but as we serve our community (with amazing coffee) we will be able to take the proceeds to help develop missionary minded youth, allowing them an opportunity to go on a Missions trip. After prayerful consideration, we have decided our first connection with be with Project Mercy in Yetebon, Ethiopia. We have on our logo an apple tree and an African tree to represent the partnership. As well as being missionary minded, we are also service minded. Colossians 3:23 tells us that in whatever we do, to work whole-heartedly. We are doing the Lords work, so we are putting special effort into making your experience at Missions Coffee Roasters a unique and exceptional one. Our Coffees are single origin from the places our GCPC missionaries are serving. (This month we have Coffee from Honduras!) I think the big question most people are wondering is “How can we help?” I feel the best way is to be connected to our mission and to our missionaries. Pray for them. Pray for us! If you like coffee, think about getting a subscription to it! This is great coffee served by great people who desire to be a part of the Great Commission.
Come to our Coffee House! Once a month we will be sharing music and coffee with the world here in Yakima! 10

2nd Grade Bibles
It is a privilege each year for Grace of Christ Children’s Department to present our current 2nd grade students with beautiful gift Bibles. We believe that the most precious gift we could ever put in the hands of any child is the Word of God. Our prayer in giving the gift Bible is that this will be the beginning in each child’s life of a personal growing and understanding of Jesus Christ. Bibles will be presented individually to each 2nd grade child during our morning KidZone time at 9am on Oct 21. This is a very special day for the 2nd graders, so we hope your child will be present to receive their Bible.

Preschool is in full swing and off to a fantastic start! I am so happy to be a part of this preschool and am excited to see what God has in store for this school year! Chapel The chapel theme for the year is Psalm 23. Every month we will focus on a verse or two of the chapter, learn how it coincides with other lessons from the Bible, and what it means for our lives today. October Memory Verse:
The Lord has promised good things. – Numbers 10:29
In The Classrooms In September, we talked about
what makes us special, learned about each other’s families and pets, and studied farm animals! This month we are looking forward to witnessing the transition of summer to autumn and visiting the pumpkin patch, where we will each select a pumpkin to decorate at our Pumpkin Party at the end of the month!
Mission Statement
Our mission is to reach families one at a time to think, love and live like Jesus and reproduce that in the lives of others. We are planting seeds that will later be brought to fruition.
