VOL 114

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Head Pastor — Bill Williamson And according to John 4.10, Jesus says that what we have by the Holy Spirit is a gift. It is a gift that keeps on giving. It is not something we keep to ourselves. We are to then take the living water to those who are thirsting for the Truth and Grace of Christ. We do so with what I am calling “DROPS of Grace.” It is the ripple effect, the generous outpouring, the gift of God that reaches out to the lost, the helpless, the broken and hurting, so that those we offer DROPS of Grace will also receive the gift of God.

Drops of Grace

During June we will look at how we can lead others to Christ through DROPS of Grace. Consider the following acronym for DROPS:

Dear Family of Grace, We have been given a wonderful gift from God, the lifegiving, and life-transforming power of the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus says flows through us like streams of living water. stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let “Jesus him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me,

as the Scripture has said, Out of his/her heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive. – John 7:37-39

Notice that Scripture says “Out of his/her heart will flow rivers of living water.” The living water flows through us, coming out of our hearts. With the transformation of our hearts, the Holy Spirit cleanses us, purging us of our sin. The water is continuously flowing through us, because we are in constant need of cleansing and purifying.

2

D – Develop Relationships with the Unchurched R – Reach the World with the Gospel O – Offer Hope to those in Need P – Pray for God to Redeem Lives S – Serve God, the Church, and the World As we continue to strive to be a church that Loves Well, imagine the ways that you can lead others to Christ through DROPS of Grace. Begin now by praying about how, who, what, where, when you can provide DROPS of Grace. To that end, in July, we will look at how we can all pray, inviting God to reveal His plan to us on earth as it is in heaven. We will consider prayer by looking at the words of Jesus in Matthew 6. To Love Well, to provide drops of Grace, to lead others to Christ, requires ongoing prayer. So, who better to teach us how to pray than Jesus?

Question: Does it matter what the pastor wears to lead worship? The pastor as common worshiper.

Pastor Emeritus Steve Barker

In recent years the emphasis seems to be the pastor should dress like the congregation. The pastor identifies with the struggles of the congregation. The pastor struggles with sin, temptations much like church members. The pastor identifies with the humanity of the congregation. I am so very grateful that Pastor Bill is genuinely a humble leader. He is a servant leader that cares. However, we are giving up some of the joys of worship. We worship in color with worship stoles of Advent, Christmas, Lent. However we don’t have to express our worship in only one style. Let’s mix it up a little on Sunday. We have a more relaxed and contemporary worship style at first service and the more formal form of worship at second service. Let’s keep open a variety of worship styles. Let the pastor take leadership in expressing our desires to worship Him.

MOPS (MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS) MOPS ended the year in May by celebrating their 20th year. MOPS has impacted many people in this area and has made some everlasting friendships. Although the school year is over, MOPS has some plans for the summer with playdates scheduled on the 3rd Friday of the month at Kissel park from 10 to noon. These dates are the 21st of June and the 19th of July. 3

MOPS will begin the 2019-2020 year by sending two of its leadership to the international convention (MOMCON) in Orlando. If you would to help sponsor the two moms going you can make donations at the church office designated to “MOPS Convention.” MOPS will start up its regular meetings in September on the 20th at 9am in the Chapel.

Congregational Care — John Stolzenbach

(Habakkuk 3:17-19). He says: “Though the fig tree should not blossom...,” then he lists all the things that could happen to the crops and flocks which would be disastrous, but he had learned to trust God, saying: “yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take great joy in the God of my salvation.”

In George Gershwin’s classic musical, Porgy and Bess, there’s a song that comes to mind during this time of the year that starts off with the words “Summertime and the livin’ is easy...” But the reality is, from another song from the same musical, “It ain’t necessarily so.” Summer, like any other of the four seasons has its own set of troubles. The same thing’s true for people who live on Easy Street in Yakima, they have the same problems as others, speaking from experience! As believers in Jesus, we will have the same problems as everyone else in the world, but we have someone Who says “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5, along with the reassuring words, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Hebrew 13:8. Our Triune God, (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) walks with us whatever life, in this imperfect world, brings in the summertime, and the other seasons, too. That’s why Paul, who wrote many of his letters from prison, can encourage the Philippian Church in their faith writing these familiar words recorded in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” Paul isn’t telling us to rejoice when we get the diagnosis from our doctor, when our marriage ends, when we’ve been fired, or have financial problems. No, he is saying we are to rejoice in the Lord who is with us and walks alongside us.

Where is God calling you to mirror the attitudes of Paul and the prophet, Habakkuk, in your life? They had challenges, disappointments, sorrow, and possible death to face, but in the midst of the realities of life, they knew they weren’t alone, and trusted God and took the time to rejoice in Him. Remember, you are not alone. God is with you. He came, as we remember at Christmas, Immanuel, “God with us.” Then at Pentecost, His Holy Spirit was released to His people, filling them and us with His power. We have gone from “God with us,” to being “God in us,” and giving birth to the church, the Body of Christ. We aren’t alone as we minister to each other and those with whom we worship, study, serve and care for each day. Yes, there are pastors and deacons, all who are considered to be part of Pastoral Care. That’s why we are changing the name to Congregational Care, which includes all of us. As the old song goes, “I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together.” Why? So we can be the loving arms, feet, eyes, ears and voice of Jesus to share and care and love others well. It’s amazing what one little drop of grace can do in someone’s life.

The prophet Habakkuk, who tried to tell God how to run His world, had a radical change of heart (even knowing the Babylonians were about to invade them) and was able to say to the Lord that he trusted Him no matter what happened

Together Serving Jesus, – John Stolzenbach

Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church

Stewardship Jesus is telling us that on the final day whether we get a little or a lot of applause, or only a pat on the back the important thing will be whether or not we are certain of our standing in the Kingdom of heaven. In the end what’s really important in this life and for eternity is pleasing God. Our lives should be lived for His approval. When we work to get the approval of people, we will often get it but in the process, we may miss the heavenly reward that lasts for eternity.

care! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to “Take be admired, because then you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give a gift to someone in need, don’t shout about it as the hypocrites do – blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I assure you, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone, don’t tell your left hand what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in secret, and your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you. – Matthew 6:1-4

Jesus clearly tells us to live for an audience of One. All we do should be to please God and not the people around us. But there is a human tendency to do things to impress others. Making the focus of our lives pleasing other people usually doesn’t work however, it just sets us up for being unsatisfied and unhappy. Jesus wants us to be especially careful of living out our faith for other people. If we do everything for the sake of impressing others we ultimately will have no reward from our Father in heaven. Jesus simply says be careful not to spend your time trying to impress other people when it comes to your faith.

5

The verses in Matthew 6 raise a question. How much would you give to Kingdom causes if the only one who knew about it was God? If the offering plate were never passed, if a mission trip was never available, if no one ever saw you stand and sing a praise song... how much of your treasure, talents, and time would you spend serving and loving God? How would you answer? If all your acts of faith were just between you and God would you still do them? many who seem to be important now will be the “ But least important then, and those who are considered least here will be the greatest then. – Mark 10: 31 ” In the end it won’t really matter what other people think

about how you’ve lived your life. What will matter is what God thinks. the just judge of all the world, will judge all “ ...God, people according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who persist in doing what is good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. – Romans 2: 6-7

God will give to each person as his deeds deserve. What do your deeds deserve? Do you do what you do for the approval of man? Or do you live your life for God, our audience of One?

Adams Teachers & Staff Appreciation Dinner What a fun time it was to be invited to participate in the Adams Teachers and Staff Appreciation Dinner! Around 70 Adams staff, family members, and a good contingency of volunteers from the Grace of Christ Adams Readers attended this especial event in April. There were over 110 people in our church gym, celebrating in total fellowship. As a former educator, I know the countless hours, expense, and energy that comes from the personal time and pocketbooks of staff members as they invest in the students, families, and classrooms. What an honor and privilege to come alongside the Adams staff to celebrate and thank them for their work in our community. It was a team effort of Grace Staff and Congregants. Monnie Miller and congregants of Gracia de Cristo beautifully decorated the room. Thomas Sudbury offered free coffee drinks personally delivered to the guests at their tables while the youth group kids worked as servers bringing food to the tables and meeting the needs of the guests. There were at least 20 gift baskets given away, courtesy of various ministry teams and small groups as well as a couple of community sponsors. Erica Duran helped organize and orchestrate much of the evening.

Aurora Rule and Women of Prayer cooked an outstanding Mexican dinner call “Birria.” It was a wonderful evening of blessing for the attendees and those who honored them.

Thank You staff and congregants of Gracia/Grace church for Loving Well with Drops of Grace to the Adams staff. Your prayers and support help make it a wonderful success!

¡Gracias!

Clothing Exchange

Intercambio De Ropa

We experienced another day filled with the Blessings of Our God. The clothing exchange was wonderful! Many families came to our church to give and receive. In addition, people came asking for prayer for their children and their families. Each volunteer expressed acts of kindness, charity and compassion. Many of the people who attended the event needed more than clothes. They needed to experience the love of God through the members of our church, all our brothers and sisters sharing His love with “drops of grace.” It all started with a fresh and beautiful day filled with bright sunshine, prayer and a good breakfast provided by our brothers in the deacon’s group. They brought sandwiches, fresh fruits, donuts, milk, chocolate and fresh coffee. After the doors opened at 9:00am and people entered, our sister in Christ, Betty Rosenkrantz, welcomed them and made them feel at home. There were hundreds, or perhaps thousands of items to choose from with enough for everyone to take something home.

At 11:00am, The families of our community enjoyed a delicious lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos with cheese, fresh strawberry water and dessert. The children played in the bouncy house and playground. At the end of the event, we cleaned the church gym and brought all the additional items to the YUGM (Yakima Mission). God is a God of blessing and nothing is wasted. He used us and His provisions for His Glory.

Loving Our Community Personally, it was beautiful and wonderful for me to be able to share time with our brothers and sisters in our community and enjoy a pleasant moment full of joy and the presence of God. Everything was a great blessing to see how everyone received from the Lord what they needed and see the brothers of our church working together and helping in this difficult task, and also sharing the joy and love that only God can give. We work to the fullest, we finish tired but full of joy for having the opportunity to be at the service of our God and Creator. We thank God also for giving us strength for each day.

– MMT Our Mission Team 12

God commands us to “Love our Neighbors Well with Drops of Grace”

Adams Elementary community and Grace of Christ celebrated Cinco de Mayo together on Friday, May 3 with many parents and their children. Everything was filled with the Love of God, His Joy and Peace. There was music and dances from Mexico. The parents (PTO) were in charge of coordinating the entire event. The typical Mexican food of Cinco de Mayo was delicious. My family and I tried all the dishes and might just have gained a couple pounds! After the meal we went to the soccer field to play with more than 50 children who ran across the field without showing signs of fatigue. Tim Lee, the principal of Adams school was the goalkeeper of his team, but even so, they could not avoid being defeated and my wife Aurora and her team won the game. I was the referee of that fair play (Juego Limpio) and I did not have to use any yellow or red cards. It was fun to watch my two little children and all the other kids running after the soccer ball. The game lasted two hours and everyone was full of joy and glad to have participated. God heard our prayers and there were no injuries on or off the field. Our church gave away 10 soccer balls and five pairs of soccer shoes. If God allows us, we will be ready to participate in another celebration in 2020. Hospitality Ministry YOU ARE WELCOME TO HELP SERVE Looking around the church on Sunday mornings, it is good to see and hear the congregants engaged in practicing hospitality! We see visitors every Sunday and the summer months are no exception. Chances are these visitors are entering our doors for the first time. Our hope is that they will keep coming. But there is more than hearing Pastor Bill that brings people back. You have a role to play as well!

Linda Sorenson

Linda Mathews

Hospitality is a vital front door ministry within our church that creates a welcoming environment where others can be put at ease and thus, more open to hear of God’s love as the Good News of Jesus Christ is shared.

Recently, a young woman who was new to town approached the Welcome Center and wanted to know how she might get involved with the church. Her life was at a crisis point. Was there a Bible study? She had heard of MOPs and wondered how to connect with that group. Was there somewhere she might participate to help serve? As we chatted various congregants came near and were invited into the conversation. Simple introductions were made as people entered into the dialogue. Words of welcome were expressed, and a couple of gals her encouraged her to joinjoin them them Tuesday morning morning women’s Bible Bible study. It was wonderful to witness the warmth and encouragement given to this young mom. Thank you, Grace Church, for your participation in our Hospitality ministry by engaging with others! 15

We want to encourage everyone to be welcoming. It is not just up to the Hospitality Team of greeters, ushers, refreshment servers and welcome center volunteers to meet guests and extend a welcome. So, make eye contact with all who enter, smile and welcome them. Free up your hands. Put away your cell phone, put down your coffee, reach out and shake hands. Focus on those you don’t know first and introduce yourself and then extend to the friend standing nearby. Seek out those in the Garden Room after the service who were new to you when greeting during the service. Express how much you enjoyed meeting them and invite them back next week. Hospitality isn’t just intended for “newbies.” For each and every person who comes on Sundays, hospitality is evidenced in fellowship, comforting hugs in times of grief, impromptu prayer with others over a situation of challenge, and sharing joys and celebrations of our lives. The “church” isn’t a place or building but the living Body of Christ when we come together to worship the LORD and manifest the identity in Jesus. Seeing hospitality in action and experiencing it firsthand testifies to the presence of the LORD amongst us, and that is something that invites a repeat visit.

Mission Ministry

BAGS OF HOPE – Campbell Farm

Please Bring Filled Bags to Church by June 9 For many years, our church has been supporting Campbell Farm with Bags of Hope. We want to help Campbell Farm continue with their mission to help children move in the right direction. CAMPBELL FARM offers mentoring, meals and tutoring for young people after school throughout the school year. The program provides transportation to students, tutoring, arts and crafts and a loving multi-cultural community for predominantly Native American and Latino children. Due to the lack of food resources among many of the children’s families, TCF prioritizes mind, body and soul nourishment as one of the main goals for the after-school program. The farm provides children with a safe place to do their homework with the support of mentors before being fed healthy dinners and returning home. In their community 1 in 3 of our youth have thought of committing suicide and 1 in 5 have actually attempted. State Department of Health statistics released in May of 2013 show that in Washington, the rate of suicide among native youth from 10 to 24 years old was more than double the rate of any other ethnic population. It is the Farm’s mission to give these youth hope and value in their self-worth in order to follow the steps that Christ has prepared for them. is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and no one comes “Jesus to the Father, except through Him. – John 14:6 ” Thank you, Grace of Christ Church, for your love to our

Compassion Sunday Review Compassion International was founded in 1952 and is dedicated to helping needy children worldwide. It is Christ centered, child focused, and church based. It partners with indigenous churches in the area of focus. There are about 6,800 of these churches in the program. Every sponsored child is nurtured spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially at a child development center in a gospel-centered church. Every child has the opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus and experience faith in Christ. Compassion is in 25 countries including many in South America, Africa and Asia. There are more than 1.9 million children currently enrolled in Compassion International programs. Historically at least 80 percent of every dollar is invested directly into programs that support the mission of releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name. Sponsorship for each child is $38.00 per month. This supplies nutritious food, educational support, medical care, vocational training, etc. There is also an opportunity to send a gift for the child’s birthday and for Christmas. One-on-one child sponsorship is the cornerstone of Compassion’s work. Through your letters, prayers and support, a sponsor gives a child hope and encouragement that builds up his or her confidence and faith in a loving God. In turn you will be blessed by the drawings and letters that you receive from your child. May 5th was Compassion Sunday. Upon our request Compassion sent us 25 child packets. Consider for a moment that members of our church supply support for all 25 children. Then in a year or so, as we get to know them, we plan a trip to Ethiopia to visit them. David, at Compassion office in Colorado Springs is already on board to assist us in making that happen. And while we are there we will visit our other mission interest, Project Mercy. We will hold a VBS for the orphans, visit the school and tour the project grounds. If you missed it but want to support a child and be a part of this mission endeavor, please contact Betty Rosenkranz .

Mission Ministry Orcas Encampment Think back to your childhood. Some of you remember summer family camping trips. They were a chance to get away from the city, the noise, the people, the asphalt and buildings. A chance to run in the woods, swim in a river or lake, take a hike on a wooded trail and end the day in front of a roaring campfire. Now imagine a childhood summer without those experiences. Summers filled with city houses, streets, cars, maybe a day or two at the local pool, but not much else to break up the monotony of a hot summer. Even worse, imagine a childhood without ever leaving the city, never seeing what a forest looks like, what the ocean looks like, never experiencing the wonder of the outdoors. For twenty-one 1st and 2nd grade boys, the Orcas Encampment is their opportunity to engage with God in nature, to see the amazing scope of His beautiful handiwork; a chance to take that hike, to encounter a deer in a wooded meadow, walk under a waterfall, to see the ocean. At Orcas, these young boys learn that God loves them, wants the best for them, sent Jesus to Earth for them, died for them and wants to spend every day with them for the rest of their lives.

Moultray Mission Update Dr. Ryan Moultray recently sent an update to Grace’s Mission Ministry Team. A few months ago, Dr. Moultray shared that he and his family would be returning home this coming summer. Dr. Moultray explains that their family’s original plan was to permanently return to life back in Washington State. Dr. Moultray further explains, “Our sending agency, Christian Health Service Corps, has encouraged us to approach it as a ‘home assignment’ as we pray about our purpose.”

So, for the Moultray family, at this time they are unsure as to whether or not their return to Yakima will be a permanent return, or a year-long furlough. Please keep them in your prayers as they are putting things into place for their trip home and as Dr. Moultray looks for a job. Orcas Encampment is a chance for these boys to get out of the ordinary lives and see the possibilities that God has created for them, all the while getting to experience a summer camping trip.

According to Dr. Moultray, the family does have plans to return to Honduras following their return to the states for the month of December 2019. This is a time when the hospital has short coverage and needs critical assistance.

Would you be willing to help? First and foremost, we need to be held up in prayer; for safety, for protection, for God’s leading and strength, and for a life changing experience in each of these boys’ lives. However, if you feel God’s leading to help in other ways as well, please contact Greg Nebeker 509-307-1100, or Monnie Miller, 509-248-7940. This year’s encampment is June 16-21.

“Thank you so much for partnering with us in this wonderful ministry of love and service. It has been an absolute joy. We know it has been making a difference here (Honduras), as even recently, our community has felt some persecution. We know that this is a good sign that the enemy of GRACE, LOVE and MERCY doesn’t appreciate our efforts. Thank you for your ongoing prayers,” Dr. Moultray states.
